Speaker 0

Hello, friends.

Speaker 0

Before we begin, there's a quick ad, and then we'll get right to the story.

Speaker 0

Hello, friends, and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.

Speaker 0

Craig and Kat are having summer vacation.

Speaker 0

The weather is hot, one of the hottest days so far, and Craig is sitting in his mother's office enjoying the air conditioning until she gets tired of his questions.

Speaker 0

Craig then goes to Kat's house and tries to think of something they can do.

Speaker 0

They sit in Kat's room under the fan until Craig sees that Kat's trophy is missing.

Speaker 0

Agents six and seven, the case of the missing trophy.

Speaker 0

It was very hot outside.

Speaker 0

Craig

Craig had heard someone call it the hottest day on record, which could be true.

Speaker 0

He'd spent yesterday and the day before sitting underneath the air conditioner in his mom's home office.

Speaker 0

She didn't want to turn them all on throughout the house, which Craig thought was probably his fault for leaving the door open.

Speaker 0

His dad always said something in winter about not wanting to heat the outside.

Speaker 0

Craig

Craig wondered if the same thing worked backwards.

Speaker 0

If everyone had their AC on and opened their doors at the same time, would it make the heat wave go away?

Speaker 0

He filed that away for later.

Speaker 0

Craig had walked over to Kat's house after breakfast, mostly because there was nothing else to do.

Speaker 0

Also because his mom didn't appreciate his constant questions when he sat in her office.

Speaker 0

That was the thing about summer.

Speaker 0

It sounded great in June, and then by July, you were just sitting in your friend's room staring at the ceiling fan.

Speaker 0

Kat's ceiling fan didn't do much.

Speaker 0

It just moved the hot air around in a circle.

Speaker 0

We should do something, Craig said.

Speaker 0

Like what?

Speaker 0

I don't know, something.

Speaker 0

You should have gone to camp this week, Kat said.

Speaker 0

It's probably not hot there.

Speaker 0

That camp is scary.

Speaker 0

Last time, there were spiders as big as dogs, and they didn't have mustard for the hot dogs.

Speaker 0

Now I understand why you didn't go.

Speaker 0

Mustard is a requirement.

Speaker 0

Kat

Kat was lying on her bed with one arm over her face.

Speaker 0

Something will come up, she said.

Speaker 0

Something always does.

Speaker 0

Craig looked around her room.

Speaker 0

Wrestling poster, bookshelf, desk with a lamp and a pencil holder, and a small plastic trophy in the corner, and He looked at the corner again.

Speaker 0

Kat, what?

Speaker 0

Where's your trophy?

Speaker 0

Kat sat up and looked at the desk.

Speaker 0

Then she got up and checked under it.

Speaker 0

Then she checked the shelf above it and the windowsill and behind the pencil holder, in that order, the way you check for something you're pretty sure is somewhere obvious.

Speaker 0

It wasn't anywhere obvious.

Speaker 0

She said.

Speaker 0

Craig waited.

Speaker 0

He was good at waiting when he thought something interesting was about to happen.

Speaker 0

Okay, Kat said finally.

Speaker 0

That's weird.

Speaker 0

Craig already had his notebook out.

Speaker 0

It used to be his dad's.

Speaker 0

His dad wrote things down so he wouldn't forget them.

Speaker 0

Craig mostly forgot he had it in his pocket until he needed it, which he thought was basically the same system.

Speaker 0

Suspects, he said.

Speaker 0

Marco, your dad, biscuit.

Speaker 0

It's a trophy, Craig, not a diamond.

Speaker 0

A good detective treats every case the same.

Speaker 0

He said this like he'd read it somewhere.

Speaker 0

We start with Marco.

Speaker 0

Marco was in the living room watching something loud on TV.

Speaker 0

He was seven, which Craig considered relevant.

Speaker 0

Seven year olds touched everything.

Speaker 0

Did you take Kat's trophy?

Speaker 0

Craig asked.

Speaker 0

No, Marco said without looking away from the screen.

Speaker 0

You answered pretty fast.

Speaker 0

Because I didn't take it.

Speaker 0

You've got chocolate on your hands.

Speaker 0

Marco looked at his hands.

Speaker 0

So?

Speaker 0

Craig wrote something down.

Speaker 0

Stop writing things down, Kat said.

Speaker 0

Craig wrote something else down.

Speaker 0

Marco had gone back to his show.

Speaker 0

He didn't seem worried, which could mean he was innocent or could mean he was good at this.

Speaker 0

Craig wasn't sure yet.

Speaker 0

He wrote that down too.

Speaker 0

Kat pulled him back into the hallway by the elbow.

Speaker 0

He didn't take it, she said.

Speaker 0

You don't know that.

Speaker 0

He's my brother.

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 0

Craig looked at his list, then at Marco, then back at his list.

Speaker 0

He didn't cross anything out yet, but he capped his pen, which meant he was done with Marco for now.

Speaker 0

They went back to Kat's room to think.

Speaker 0

Craig crouched down and looked at the shelf where the trophy had been.

Speaker 0

There was a small scuff mark along the edge, like something had bumped it from below.

Speaker 0

Something hit the shelf, he said.

Speaker 0

Kat looked.

Speaker 0

Biscuit does that sometimes.

Speaker 0

When he's chasing his ball down the hallway, he kind of bounces off things.

Speaker 0

Craig uncapped his pen and wrote it down.

Speaker 0

You don't have to write down everything I say.

Speaker 0

You might be right about something.

Speaker 0

Kat gave him a look that he didn't see because he was still writing.

Speaker 0

They decided to split up, which was Craig's idea.

Speaker 0

He took the hallway.

Speaker 0

Kat took the stairs.

Speaker 0

This felt very professional to Craig and slightly ridiculous to Kat, but she went along with it.

Speaker 0

He found nothing in the hallway, not one single clue.

Speaker 0

Kat found one of Biscuit's chew toys on the third stair, a purple rubber bone he usually kept in his bed by the back door.

Speaker 0

That wasn't there this morning, she called down.

Speaker 0

Craig came around the corner fast.

Speaker 0

Where?

Speaker 0

Third stair.

Speaker 0

He looked at it for a long moment.

Speaker 0

Then he wrote something down and underlined it twice.

Speaker 0

I found that, Kat said.

Speaker 0

We found it.

Speaker 0

I found it, and you wrote it down.

Speaker 0

That's how a team works, Craig said, already heading toward the living room.

Speaker 0

Come on, I know where Biscuit is.

Speaker 0

Kat followed him.

Speaker 0

She was pretty sure she knew too, but she let him have it.

Speaker 0

The living room was quiet except for a ceiling fan and Marco, who had fallen asleep on the couch with the TV still going.

Speaker 0

Nobody had turned it off.

Speaker 0

Biscuit was nowhere in sight, which told them everything they needed to know.

Speaker 0

Craig got down on his stomach and looked under the couch.

Speaker 0

Biscuit was in there, eyes open, doing his best impression of a dog who hadn't done anything wrong.

Speaker 0

Right beside him was a small pile of things, the way a dog builds a small pile of things when nobody is watching.

Speaker 0

Three socks, a TV remote, a blue crayon, and one small plastic trophy.

Speaker 0

Not chewed, just relocated.

Speaker 0

He didn't even chew it, Craig said.

Speaker 0

He was crouched beside Kat looking in.

Speaker 0

He never chews the things he takes, Kat says, just moves them.

Speaker 0

Why does he do that?

Speaker 0

Kat shrugged.

Speaker 0

I think he just likes having stuff.

Speaker 0

Kat reached under and pulled the trophy out.

Speaker 0

She looked at it for a second, wiped the dust off with her shirt, then put it in her pocket instead of making a big thing of it.

Speaker 0

Craig crossed Marco's name off the list.

Speaker 0

Then he crossed off their dad.

Speaker 0

Then he looked at Biscuit, who had not moved.

Speaker 0

You knew it was him the whole time, Craig said.

Speaker 0

Kat didn't answer right away.

Speaker 0

I had a feeling.

Speaker 0

You could have just said that at the beginning.

Speaker 0

You had a list, Craig.

Speaker 0

I didn't want to ruin the list.

Speaker 0

Craig looked at his notebook.

Speaker 0

There were a lot of crossed out things on it.

Speaker 0

He folded it up and put it in his pocket anyway.

Speaker 0

Biscuit crawled out from under the couch, wagged twice, and wandered off toward the kitchen, completely unbothered.

Speaker 0

They went back to Kat's room.

Speaker 0

Kat put the trophy back on the corner of the desk and stood there looking at it for a second.

Speaker 0

Then she sat down on the floor with her back against the bed, which was her thinking spot.

Speaker 0

Craig sat in the beanbag chair.

Speaker 0

It made a noise when he sat in it.

Speaker 0

It always made that noise.

Speaker 0

Second case closed, Kat said.

Speaker 0

Craig nodded slowly.

Speaker 0

Agents six and seven.

Speaker 0

Agents six and seven, she agreed.

Speaker 0

Craig unfolded his list and looked at it one more time.

Speaker 0

A lot of crossed out names.

Speaker 0

One circle around the word Biscuit with two underlines and a question mark he didn't remember drawing.

Speaker 0

It was definitely the dog, he said.

Speaker 0

It was definitely the dog, Kat agreed.

Speaker 0

Biscuit wandered in, stepped on Craig's foot, and lay down in the middle of the floor like he'd solved the whole thing himself.

Speaker 0

Does he always do that?

Speaker 0

Craig问。

Craig asked.

Speaker 0

Pretty much, Kat said.

Speaker 0

Craig looked at his notebook one more time, then dropped it on the beanbag chair.

Speaker 0

Some cases, he figured, were like that.

Speaker 0

And that is the end of our story.

Speaker 0

Good night.

Speaker 0

Sleep tight.
