It is Saturday, and Bernice is up before Papa Bear even finishes his coffee.
Bernice stumbles into the kitchen with her eyes barely open.
When Papa Bear asks why she is up, she reminds him that she is going for a run with Mama Bear and asks for some fuel for her run and puts in a request for what she'd like for breakfast afterwards.
Bernice goes for a run with Mama Bear.
Bernice walked down the stairs slowly as she wiped the sleep from her eyes.
She wasn't entirely sure she was awake yet or in a dream.
Sometimes when you just wake up from a really deep sleep, it's kinda hard to tell.
She scuffed her way into the kitchen where she gave Papa Bear, who was sitting at the kitchen table, a great big hug.
She thought she might go back to sleep at that very moment.
Good morning, little bear.
Why are you up so early?
I thought after a week of school, you might want to sleep in a little bit this Saturday.
You don't have swimming practice, I think.
It's not early, papa.
It's super early.
I can hardly keep my eyes open, though it's getting easier, I guess.
You can go back to bed and have more sleep.
It's a free day today, and you have nothing planned.
Don't you remember, papa?
I am going running with mama this morning.
She said I could come with her.
And since we only went running a few times over the summer and I don't have swimming or any other things and stuff, we thought today would be a good day, Bernice said as she started to stretch and yawn.
Oh, right.
I forgot all about that.
My memory doesn't really work until I finish my morning coffee, and I haven't finished it yet.
Where is mama?
I didn't see her in your guys' bedroom, and she wasn't in the bathroom when I got up.
I think she just might have gone outside to warm up, little bear.
She needs a long warm up so that she can keep up with you because you are so fast.
Why don't you get your running clothes on and then have a banana and maybe a slice of toast so that you aren't hungry before you run?
Okay, papa.
But just so you know, this isn't breakfast.
Okay?
That comes later.
This is just fuel for the run.
Oh, and I wouldn't mind honey cakes after a hard run-in case you were thinking about it, Bernice said as she went to get dressed for her run.
I'll see what I can do, Papa Bear said with a laugh.
Bernice went up to her bedroom and put on her favorite running shorts and her more fancy socks, which she saved just for running.
They were a gift from Mama and had been a little big at first, but felt more comfy now that her feet had grown.
Then she put on her matching running shirt, which had the word runner on it in case anyone was confused about what she was doing.
I'm all ready, papa, she said as she ran into the kitchen, much more awake now.
You look very professional, Bernice.
I just put a couple of slices of toast in the toaster, and I got you a banana.
You should be ready after you eat this and drink some water.
I checked with Mama, and she is almost done with her warm up and will be ready to go just as soon as you finish your first breakfast.
It's fuel, papa, Bernice said as she peeled her banana.
Bernice loved bananas almost as much as she loved cookies.
She had asked Papa Bear before if he could make banana cookies, but he wasn't sure he could.
He thought bananas were more common in bread.
Banana bread was super yummy too.
Ethan's grandmother usually had some at her house along with lots of chocolate cake, which always seemed to be warm and fresh.
Papa, did you know the riper a banana is, the sweeter it becomes?
Which is kind of amazing, I think.
I read all about bananas in my new science book.
When they're green, they have way more starch in them, which is why they don't taste as sweet.
But when they ripen, enzymes break some of that starch down into sugars.
So the more yellow and spotty they get, the sweeter they taste.
Fun.
Except if they get really brown and squishy, I don't wanna eat them anymore, even though I know they are still good.
Bobby had one of those in his lunchbox one day.
I think it might have been in there for a week or so.
He still ate it, which I didn't think was a good idea.
Papa Bear smiled.
I like the green ones best.
Oh, and I was reading that bananas are picked when they're still green because they have to travel super far to get here.
Then people control the temperature and use something called ethylene gas, which bananas make naturally anyway, to help them ripen at the right time.
So we can just go to the store and buy a fresh banana even though there aren't any banana trees growing anywhere near us.
It's too cold here for that.
That's kind of a miracle of science, papa.
And ships and trucks and all the people who have to get them here, I guess.
Bernice took another bite.
This one is at almost the perfect sweetness level, I think.
Maybe one more day would be better, but I don't think I can put it back now after taking a few bites.
Just as Bernice was finishing her banana, she started thinking about what to put on her toast.
Papa had three different kinds of jam on the table, which made making decisions super hard.
They were all so good.
Before she had decided, Mama Bear came in the front door.
Mama, are you ready?
You certainly take a long time to warm up.
I am ready to run fast as soon as I put my sneakers on.
I guess that's what happens when you get older.
Papa Bear cleared his throat and smiled.
I I mean, when you get more mature and stuff, Bernice said with a smile.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Mama Bear laughed.
When you get more mature, you do need more time.
Let me get a drink of water, and I'll be ready too.
Okay, mama.
I just need to finish my toast.
I need to make sure I am fueled and ready for our run.
That's why I put strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry jam on my toast for more energy.
And when we get back, Papa said he would have the tastiest breakfast in the world ready for us.
I hope it is honey cakes, but Papa only said he would see what he could do, which is his way of saying maybe.
I think that might be his early morning yes, Mama Bear said with a smile.
Papa Bear chuckled.
Coffee first, then honey cakes.
Bernice took the last bite of her toast and then ran to the front door to put on her sneakers.
The fancy ones with the racing stripes on them.
Cookie peeked around the corner to see what all the commotion was about.
Hi, Cookie.
I am going outside to have a race with mama.
It's not a race, mama called from the kitchen with a laugh.
I don't think you can come because I think you are more of a sprinter, and I don't have a harness for you so that I can make sure you don't run-in front of a bicycle and dangerous stuff like that.
I think a bicycle going over your tail would hurt a lot, and I wouldn't want you to get hurt.
But maybe someday you can come with me.
After tying her sneakers just right, Bernice gave Cookie a pet and called out, okay, mama, I'm ready to go.
I'll be outside waiting for you.
Don't you want to warm up a little?
Mama Bear asked as she stepped outside and saw that Bernice was already walking down their driveway.
I don't think so.
I don't really need to.
I am always ready, and I think I just want to run because it's super chilly outside.
And if I had known, I might have worn my winter parka even though it is likely hiding in some place I don't know about, Bernice said as she jumped up and down trying to get warm.
It is a bit crisp this morning.
Why don't we start off slow and let your body get used to running?
I'm already used to running, mama.
是的。
Yes.
I know.
But, I mean, let your body get ready for running right now.
Your body needs to slowly prepare itself, Mama Bear said as they started down the sidewalk.
We can start here in our neighborhood, take a right up here, and then take that street to the park where we can run with the other runners out this morning.
That's the street that Ethan's grandmother lives on, Bernice said as she jogged beside Mama Bear.
I bet if we knocked on her door, she would have warm chocolate cake ready.
She always seems to have chocolate cake whenever I visit, and it's super tasty with milk and yummy delicious with ice cream.
Maybe we can wave at her house as we pass by just in case she is looking out the window.
Then as Bernice saw the park in the distance, she started to pick up her pace, her running sneakers making tapping noises on the sidewalk.
You don't need to go fast, her mother said.
Sometimes the best way to become a better runner is to go slow.
Bernice slowed down a bit, but she still stayed in front.
I think going slow is much harder than going fast.
When I start running, I just want to zoom.
That's what Bobby and I do at track, and I still win a lot.
Though some of the boys have been faster lately, but not for long.
I know I will run the fastest again soon.
They passed Ethan's grandmother's house and waved.
Bernice thought she saw her waving back, but she wasn't sure because she was running so super fast.
There is the entrance to the park, Mama Bear said.
The path to run on is just ahead.
I know, Mama, and I don't find it cool outside anymore.
I think it might have changed temperature because I'm starting to feel warm, which sometimes happens when I run really fast or swim or when I played hockey, but not when I go this slow.
I think you're warming yourself up.
I think so.
Maybe my legs are working sorta hard even if we aren't going very fast.
They followed the path farther into the park.
Bernice had run there lots of times before, but running with mama was different.
Mama kept the same pace while Bernice sometimes moved a little ahead then slowed down again when she realized she was doing it.
Are we gonna run this slow the whole way, mama?
That was the plan.
What if we feel like going faster?
We can go faster another day.
I still think it's strange to run slow when you know you can run fast.
Mama Bear laughed.
Can you still talk to me?
Of course.
I can talk when I run way faster than this too.
I can probably talk at almost any speed.
At least I think so.
I don't talk much when I run because it's usually a race, and I am in the lead, except for lately.
They kept going, their sneakers tapping along the path.
Bernice told Mama about a bird she had seen near the park the other day, then about something Bobby had said at school and was just starting to explain why she thought running paths should have water fountains in more places when the path began to rise.
Oh, a hill, Bernice said.
是的。
Yes.
A hill.
It wasn't a huge hill, but it was long enough that Bernice could see the path climbing ahead of them.
I think we should run up it.
We are running up it.
I mean faster.
Mama Bear looked over at her.
I thought we were having an easy run.
是的。
We are.
I'm just going to run easily up the hill a little faster.
Before Mama could answer, Bernice started moving faster.
For the first little bit, it was easy.
Bernice's feet moved quickly, and she pulled the head.
She looked back once and saw Mama still running at almost exactly the same speed as before.
The hill had looked pretty easy from the bottom, but Bernice was starting to think it was longer than it looked.
She slowed a little, then a little more, while Mama Bear kept running at the same steady pace behind her.
A few moments later, mama passed her.
Bernice stared at her as she went by.
Hey.
That's not fair.
Mama kept running until she reached the top, then turned around and waited while Bernice finished the last little bit.
You tricked me, Bernice said.
Mama Bear laughed.
How did I trick you?
You were running slow, but somehow you got here faster.
I just kept running the same speed.
Bernice looked back down the hill.
I think I need to investigate that.
I think we can investigate while we keep running.
Okay, but next time I'm going to try starting slower.
That sounds like a good experiment.
Bernice fell into step beside Mama again, and they continued along the path.
They ran around the park a few more times, and Bernice tried very hard not to zoom ahead even when other runners passed them.
Then they headed for home.
Papa, we are home, and I think I could smell something yummy delicious all the way from Ethan's house, and I don't think it was chocolate cake.
It smells like yummy honey cakes, Bernice said as she came in and quickly took off her sneakers.
Bernice, you are all sweaty.
Did you have a good run?
We did, Papa, and I let mama win this time so that we could try this slow running idea she has.
It was actually harder than I thought.
I mean, who would think that running slow was actually hard and stuff?
I might try it again.
Maybe it will help me win races against these new boys who have been winning lately when we go out for track and gym.
I might even be able to teach Bobby, and we can both win, though I don't think he will want to try.
He does everything super fast.
He doesn't have my patience yet.
She did very well, Mama Bear said as she grabbed a cup of coffee and helped put some honey cakes on a plate for Bernice.
These honey cakes look yummy.
They look yummy delicious, Papa.
I better eat fast before my stomach starts gurgling, which we wouldn't want because it would scare Cookie and maybe scare all the cats in the neighborhood because it's so loud and sounds like thunder.
There's no need to rush, little bear, mama said.
Eating slowly is a good idea too.
Bernice looked at mama, then at the honey cakes.
I think slow running might be enough slow for one day.
And that is the end of our story.
Good night.
Sleep Tight.
