Now on to our story.

伯尼斯和伊森第一天放学后，一起坐公交车回家，在车上聊着天。

Bernice and Ethan are chatting on the bus together on their way home after their first day of school.

他们聊到了学校里的味道，还有为了开学准备的那些事儿。

They talk about the smell at the school and all the things they needed to do to get ready.

伯尼斯回到家，先跟库奇聊了会儿，然后去厨房跟熊爸爸聊她第一天上学的情况。

When Bernice gets home, she chats with Cookie before heading to the kitchen to talk to Papa Bear about her first day of school.

伯尼斯对开学这事儿可是门儿清。

Bernice is an expert in the start of school.

伯尼斯，你那双运动鞋真酷。

Those are cool looking sneakers, Bernice.

我这次买的跟上次一样，因为我妈说我脚长得太快了什么的。

I just got the same ones as last time because my mom says my feet are growing too fast or something.

是啊，我觉得我暑假肯定长个儿了，因为我的书包都有点不合适了。

Yeah, I think I must have grown over the summer because my backpack doesn't quite fit right.

妈妈带我们出去买东西的时候说要再买一个，但我喜欢这个，而且它还能用。

Mama offered to get another one when we were out looking for stuff, but I like this one and it still works.

但她非要给我买新运动鞋。

But she made me get new sneakers.

当然，鲍比说有个规矩，谁穿了新白运动鞋，别人就得踩一脚。

And, of course, Bobby said there was some rule that when someone has new white sneakers, you have to step on them.

所以他就踩了。

So he did.

伊森笑了。

Ethan laughed.

我都忘了那回事。

I forgot about that.

我的鞋是黑色的，所以我可能先穿旧的那双。

Mine are black, so I might just wear my old ones for a while.

They have character and memories on them.

Did you notice how stinky school was?

I thought I was the only one, Bernice said.

我的储物柜简直臭得不行。

My locker was so bad.

It smelled like someone left rotten strawberries in it all summer, which might actually be true.

有些孩子不喜欢草莓。

Some kids don't like strawberries.

你是不是也得跟爸妈出去买新学期的用品？

Did you have to go out with your parents and get new school supplies?

太无聊了。

So boring.

我只想待在家里看书，但我妈非要我去，因为得试衣服什么的。

I just wanted to stay home and read my book, but my mom made me go because I had to try on clothes and all that stuff.

还好学校一年只开学一次。

I'm glad school only starts once a year.

我妈带我去的，我倒也没太在意。

My mama took me, and I didn't mind it too much.

我买了几本新练习本，但我不想用，因为它们看起来太完美了。

I got some new scribblers, which I don't want to use because they look perfect.

伊桑笑了，就像看到新书一样。

Ethan laughed, like a new book.

不过我喜欢新书。

I like new books, though.

我想我最终会用的，尤其是如果英语课又要写很多的话。

Eventually, I'll use them, I guess, especially if we have too much writing in English again.

我希望我们只上科学、数学和美术课。

I wish we could just have science and math and art.

然后是体育课。

Then gym class.

还有午餐。

And lunch.

I like to eat.

还有食堂里免费的冰淇淋机。

And a free ice cream machine in the cafeteria.

Oh, the bus is slowing down, so I think this is our stop.

I forgot that we had to get off.

伯尼斯笑了。

Bernice laughed.

对，我还没习惯这个。

Yeah, I'm not used to this yet.

伯尼斯和伊桑走了一小段路，到了伯尼斯家，然后道别。

Bernice and Ethan walked the short distance to Bernice's house where they said goodbye.

你确定不想进来坐坐吗？

Are you sure you don't want to come over?

我百分之百确定奶奶会准备新鲜的巧克力蛋糕和牛奶当点心。

I am 1000% sure grandma will have fresh chocolate cake and milk for a treat.

听起来不错，伊桑，但我觉得我已经能闻到爸爸烤的饼干的香味了，你放学后随时欢迎进来，伯尼斯说着，走上她小房子的前台阶。

Sounds good, Ethan, but I think I can already smell Papa's cookies, and you are always welcome to come in after school, Bernice said as she walked up the front steps of her small house.

Okay.

回头见，鳄鱼，伊桑说着，边走边挥手，沿着街道走远了。

See you later, alligator, Ethan said as he walked away, waving as he went down the street.

过会儿见，鳄鱼，伯尼斯回应着，也挥了挥手。

After a while, crocodile, Bernice said, waving back.

伯尼斯几乎是冲进前门的。

Bernice almost ran in the front door.

与其说是走进去，不如说是跳进去的，因为台阶太矮了，她赶紧关上门，好让那些香喷喷的味道都跑不出去。

It was more of a jump because the step was so short and closed the door quickly so that all the yummy smells couldn't escape.

她也知道这样其实不太公平。

She knew this wasn't really fair.

也许邻居们也想闻闻新鲜出炉的饼干香味呢。

Maybe the neighbors would want to smell the fresh baked cookies.

但她就是有点想把香味都留给自己。

But she kind of wanted the smell all to herself.

爸爸，小饼干，我回来了，家里闻起来就像个香喷喷的饼干工厂。

Papa and Cookie, I'm home, and the house smells like a delicious cookie factory.

而且我有点饿了，因为今天真是够折腾的。

And I'm a little hungry because it was a day.

你知道我在哪儿，小熊，熊爸爸用他那超级低沉的声音喊道。

You know where I am, little bear, Papa Bear called in his super deep voice.

我迫不及待想听听你今天过得怎么样。

I can't wait to hear all about your day.

伯尼斯坐在地板上脱她的新运动鞋，鞋子还有点硬。

Bernice sat down on the floor to take off her new sneakers, which were still kind of stiff.

当然，她其实不需要坐下来，但每次她一坐下，库基通常就会从客厅过来，然后她们会聊一会儿。

She didn't need to sit down, of course, but when she did, Cookie would usually come from the living room, and they would have a short chat.

Or Bernice would chat, and Cookie would lie there getting pets.

I am sitting down.

And even though I am super hungry for yummy cookies, I have time for you because you are my bestest friend, Bernice said as she struggled with a knot in one of her sneakers.

Then she heard that familiar sound, a thump followed by the soft padding of feet and Cookie's funny little noises as she walked toward her from her sitting place in the living room.

There you are, Cookie.

今天不想让人摸摸吗？

Don't you want some pets today?

我知道现在有点不一样了，因为我回学校了，所以不能经常陪着你。

I know it's a bit different now that I am back at school and stuff, so I'm not going to be around as much.

但我在的时候，我们还是可以一起玩得很开心。

But we can still have fun when I am around.

你大概整天都在打盹吧，因为除了晚上跟我一起睡觉的时候，你更喜欢在我们睡着的时候玩，这对我来说有点奇怪。

You probably napped all day because, other than when you come to bed with me at nighttime, you like to play more while we are asleep, which seems kinda strange to me.

但你是只猫，猫就得有猫的样子，我想是这样。

But you are a cat, and cats gotta be like cats, I guess.

Cookie从伯妮斯的腿间走过，然后翻了个身，露出肚皮，好让她摸摸。

Cookie walked between Bernice's legs and rolled over onto her back so that she could get a belly rub.

今天真是超棒的一天，Cookie。

Today was a super day, Cookie.

你肯定想不到。

You wouldn't believe it.

我其实不太紧张。

I wasn't really too nervous.

可能有点兴奋，因为老师们会教我们新东西。

Maybe a little excited because the teachers give us new stuff to learn.

不过，现在还没有。

Well, not yet.

我们今天没干什么，主要是聊了聊。

We didn't do much today, mostly just talked about stuff.

有些孩子特别紧张，你要是仔细看就能看出来，因为他们会变得很安静。

Some kids get super nervous, and you can kind of tell if you look hard enough because they seem quiet.

所以你只需要跟他们聊聊天，这就是我们这些大孩子该做的。

So all you have to do is talk to them a bit because that's what us older kids have to do.

鲍比在这方面很擅长，因为他总是对新事物充满热情。

Bobby is really good at it because he is always excited about new things.

我觉得他甚至都不紧张，不过也许他只是很会掩饰。

I don't think he even gets nervous, though maybe he is just good at hiding it.

他跑到所有新同学那儿，讲同一个笑话。

He went around to all the new kids telling the same joke.

他管这叫笑话实验。

He called it a joke experiment.

有的孩子笑了，有的孩子有点奇怪地看着他，就像我们所有人一样。

And some kids laughed, and some kids looked at him kind of strangely, just like all of us.

总之，我交了一些新朋友，这挺好的，但谁也比不上你，你是我最好的朋友。

Anyway, I made some new friends, which is nice, but none are my bestest friend like you.

曲奇用咕噜咕噜的声音回应，还伸了个更大的懒腰。

Cookie replied by purring and stretching out even farther.

我的数学老师说她要教我们一些新的数学内容，听起来还挺有意思的。

My math teacher said she is going to teach us some new math, which sounds fun, I guess.

我只希望比去年更有挑战性，去年太简单了，我觉得。

I just hope it is more challenging than last year, which was too easy, I think.

我们还得写更多的英语作文，这还行吧，但是……

And we have to do more writing in English, which is okay, I guess, but...

伯尼斯正说着话，肚子突然咕噜咕噜响起来，声音很大，把库奇都惊得坐了起来。

Bernice stopped talking when her tummy started making loud gurgling noises, which made Cookie sit up.

哎呀。

Oops.

对不起，库奇。

Sorry, Cookie.

你不用紧张。

You don't have to worry.

那不是打雷。

It isn't thunder.

只是我的肚子在咕咕叫。

It's just my tummy gurgling.

我在一本书上读到过，你的大脑其实可以在你吃东西之前就让身体准备好。

I read in a book that your brain can actually tell your body to get ready for food before you even eat it.

它能让你的嘴巴流口水，肚子也开始动起来之类的。

It can make your mouth water and your tummy start moving and stuff.

你知道吗，肚子咕咕叫其实有个科学名字。

And did you know tummy gurgles have a scientific name?

Isn't that super funny?

It almost sounds like my tummy is saying it.

Anyway, I guess I should go have some treats.

I still have to finish a book Ethan lent me.

伯尼斯把运动鞋整齐地放好，然后跑进厨房，熊爸爸正把一盘饼干放到桌上。

Bernice put her sneakers away neatly and ran into the kitchen where Papa Bear was putting a plate of cookies on the table.

那些饼干看起来像巧克力曲奇，对吧？

Those cookies look like chocolate chip, right?

它们就像我们的传统饼干，是不是？

Those are like our traditional cookies, aren't they?

伯尼斯一边说着，一边放下背包，走到水槽边洗手。

Bernice said as she set her backpack down and went to the sink to wash her hands.

熊爸爸递给伯尼斯一杯牛奶。

Papa Bear passed Bernice a glass of milk.

是的，巧克力曲奇是我最常做的饼干。

Yes, chocolate chip are what I call my go to cookies.

我觉得它们是我们最喜欢的之一，几乎成了一种传统。

I think they're one of our favorites and almost a tradition.

每年这个时候我们都会做。

Every year we make them around this time.

爸爸，我喜欢这种传统，伯尼斯笑着说。

I like these kinds of traditions, Papa, Bernice said with a laugh.

然后她大大地咬了一口。

Then she took a great big bite.

Good.

Papa Bear laughed.

I'm glad you like them.

So today was a big day.

Bernice took a big drink of milk before replying.

嗯，我觉得挺兴奋的，爸爸，不过你知道我现在对开学这种事已经算是很有经验了。

Well, I think it was exciting, Papa, but you know I am just about expert in the start of school now.

老师们说我们应该让新同学感到受欢迎什么的，其实我们平时也是这么做的，但这是个好的提醒。

And the teachers said that we should make the new kids feel welcome and stuff, which we do anyway, but it was a good reminder.

博比特别擅长认识新同学，因为他喜欢到处讲笑话。

Bobby is really good at meeting the new kids because he likes to go around telling jokes.

有些孩子笑了，有些没笑。

And some of the kids laughed and some of them didn't.

但那就是博比。

But that's Bobby.

而且他第一天没惹麻烦，所以我觉得这挺好的。

And he didn't get in trouble on the first day, so that's a good thing, I think.

熊爸爸笑了。

Papa Bear laughed.

Yes, that's a good thing.

爸爸，我今天没有上所有的课，但我上了数学课，可能比去年更有挑战性，去年简直是小菜一碟。

I didn't have all my classes today, Papa, but I did have math, and maybe it might be more challenging than last year, which was easy peasy.

还有英语课。

And English.

英语课我还不太清楚。

I just don't know yet about English.

老师人很好，但她一直让我们写东西，我更喜欢阅读。

The teacher is nice, but she wants us to write all the time, and I prefer to read.

她说写作很重要，我相信她，但我还不确定自己是否那么喜欢写作。

She says it's important, and I believe her, but I just don't know if I like to write so much yet.

不过我们还没上美术课和体育课。

We haven't had art or gym, though.

我觉得可能要到这周晚些时候吧，不过我们今天确实出去在跑道上赛跑了。

I think maybe later in the week, but we did get to go outside and race on the track.

我想念美术课，因为暑假我没怎么练习画画，但一天的时间就那么多。

I miss art because I didn't practice painting enough over the summer, but there are only so many hours in the day.

I think you might have said that, Papa.

I might have, But I remember seeing you paint quite a bit this summer, little bear.

You just did lots of other things too.

伯尼斯又咬了几口饼干，发出了一些声音，甚至坐在椅子上还跳了一小段舞。

Bernice took a few more bites of her cookie, which caused a few more sounds, and even a little dance while she sat in her chair.

Some of the new friends we made joined us at lunchtime today.

他们还不知道我们分享午餐的习惯，所以没带多少东西来分享，这没关系。

They don't know the sharing lunch habit we have yet, so they didn't have much to share, which is okay.

We shared some of ours with them.

One kid, Elizabeth, is really nice, I think.

We made extra room at the table for her in her wheelchair.

她分享了一道辣味鸡肉菜，我觉得可能是墨西哥菜，但真的太辣了，爸爸，我差点以为嘴里着火了。

She shared this spicy chicken dish that I think might have been Mexican, but it was so spicy, Papa, that I thought I might have a fire in my mouth.

我怂恿博比去尝一口，他真的尝了。

I dared Bobby to try it, and he did.

但后来他在食堂里跑来跑去，手在脸前扇风，想给嘴里进点空气，因为实在太辣了。

But then he ran around the cafeteria waving his hand in front of his face, trying to get air in his mouth because it was so hot.

伊丽莎白看到这情景笑了。

Elizabeth laughed at that.

我真不知道她怎么能吃那么辣的东西。

I don't know how she eats spicy food like that.

我喜欢吃辣的，但那个也太夸张了。

I like spicy, but that was crazy.

哦，而且她基本上是课间休息时跑得最快的孩子，爸爸，比今天的鲍比还快。

Oh, and she was basically the fastest kid at break, Papa, faster than Bobby was today.

而且当有人在跑道上比他快的时候，他就会发疯。

And he goes crazy when someone is faster than him on the track.

That sounds like something Mama might like.

I sometimes start to sweat when I eat something really spicy.

This is from Ethan.

他借了我一本书，想跟我聊聊这本书什么的，所以我想我得快点读完。

He lent me a book and he wants to talk about it or something, so I thought I should read it faster.

这本书挺有意思的。

It's pretty interesting.

这本书叫《失落的世界》，讲的是几个探险家去一个特别难到达的地方，在那里发现了还活着的恐龙和其他史前动物。

It's called The Lost World, and it's about some explorers who go to this really hard to get to place where they find dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals that are still alive.

这本书很老了，所以有些科学内容不太对，但我挺喜欢的。

It's super old so some of the science is wrong and stuff, but I like it.

我觉得伊桑知道我会喜欢，因为里面有恐龙。

I think Ethan knew I would because of the dinosaurs.

听起来像是我以前可能读过的一个故事。

That sounds like a story I might have read at one time.

是的，爸爸，你超级老了。

Yeah, Papa, you are super old.

所以这书可能你小时候还是新的呢，伯尼斯笑着说。

So this might have been new when you were a kid, Bernice said with a laugh.

Just joking, Papa.

You don't look that old.

熊爸爸笑了。

Papa Bear laughed.

你读书的时候，我去准备晚饭的东西。

While you're reading, I'm going to get some things ready for dinner.

我想做个沙拉。

I think I'll make a salad.

而且因为今天是特别的日子，妈妈说可能会带披萨回来当惊喜。

And since it's an exciting day, Mama said she might bring home a pizza for a treat.

披萨万岁，饼干万岁！

Yay for pizza and yay for cookies!

伯尼斯差不多读完伊森的书后，晚餐吃了大大的一块美味披萨和一点沙拉。

After almost finishing Ethan's book Bernice enjoyed a big, yummy, delicious slice of pizza and some salad for dinner.

然后她跟库奇玩了一会儿，因为熊爸爸一整天都没陪她玩。

She then played with Cookie for a bit because Papa Bear didn't even play with her all day.

接着她打了个哈欠，上楼开始睡前准备。

Then with a yawn, she headed upstairs to begin her bedtime routine.

在肥皂泡泡的浴缸里洗得干干净净，刷了牙，做了那些重要的事情，还准备好了第二天的衣服之后，伯尼斯终于爬上了床。

After getting squeaky clean in a soapy bath, brushing her teeth and all that important stuff, and laying out her clothes for the next day, Bernice finally climbed into bed.

她把特维加、沃尔菲和玛德琳摆得刚刚好，把被子拉到下巴，然后喊道：“爸爸，时间到了。”

She arranged Twigga, Wolfie, and Madeleine just right, pulled the blanket up to her chin, and called out, It's that time, Papa.

Did you do all the things you need to do before bed?

熊爸爸问道。

Papa Bear asked.

I think so.

I had a soapy bath.

She lived in a large castle at the edge of a mystical forest, And in this forest were unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and all manner of insects, birds, and animals.

It was a wonderful place.

就在这个特别的早晨，布布坐在城堡的花园里，书包已经收拾好放在旁边，她心不在焉地翻着爪子里的一个小石头。

On this particular morning, Boo Boo was sitting in the castle garden with her school bag already packed beside her, turning a small stone over in her paw without really looking at it.

Kai Kai landed with his usual enthusiasm, his wings sending the nearest flower sideways.

New semester today, he said.

布布放下石头。

Boo Boo set the stone down.

Mostly excited, I think.

Kai Kai nodded.

他朝远处群山望去，自己的学校就在那边。

He glanced toward the distant mountains where his own school sat.

Well, I should go.

Too bad we aren't at the same school again.

I will, Boo Boo said.

她看着他起飞，然后拿起书包，沿着一条两旁长满魔法灌木的小路向学院走去。

She watched him lift off, then picked up her bag and started down a magical bush lined path toward the academy.

这条路很安静。

The path was quiet.

知道这条路的孩子不多，而且花儿刚刚开始微微发光。

Not many kids knew about it, and the flowers just started to sparkle a little.

空气很清新，闻起来有湿草的味道，还有一种她叫不上名字的甜香。

The air was crisp and smelled like damp grass and something sweet she didn't know the name of.

她走着走着，差点没注意到路边低矮树枝上坐着的一个小精灵。

As she was walking, she just about missed a pixie sitting on a low branch just off the path.

他即使在精灵里也算小的，肩上挎着一个小书包，翅膀紧紧贴在背上。

He was small even for a pixie, with a tiny school bag looped over one shoulder and wings that were folded very tightly against his back.

他就坐在那儿，盯着地面看。

He was just sitting there looking at the ground.

你没事吧？

Are you okay?

布布问道。

Boo Boo asked.

小精灵低头看着她。

The pixie looked down at her.

他说：“我在考虑。”

I'm deciding, he said.

考虑什么？

About what?

他抠着书包边儿说：“要不要去。”

Whether to go, he picked at the edge of his bag.

这是我第一次去学院，跟那些大个子的生物一起。

It's my first time at the academy with the bigger creatures.

以前，小精灵只跟小精灵一起学习。

Before, pixies only studied with other pixies.

我们一起学好魔法，而且没有人很高。

We learned good magic together, and nobody was very tall.

你担心那些大个子的生物吗？

Are you worried about the bigger creatures?

我担心的是那些课桌，希普说。

I'm worried about the desks, Heap said.

我透过窗户看过它们一次。

I looked at them once through the window.

它们非常大。

They are very large.

我的脚都够不到地板。

My feet won't touch the floor.

It was true.

Boo Boo was bigger, but she did remember that first year when she hadn't really grown yet.

Oh, she said, and and what if nobody talks to me?

嗯，她说，我第一天来的时候，就是先找一个友善的面孔，然后抢在他们之前先打了招呼。

Well, on my very first day, she said, I just looked for one friendly face, and I said hello first before they could.

Peep looked at her.

Peep stood up, his wings starting to flutter.

Do you want to walk the rest of the way together?

布布问道。

Boo Boo asked.

皮普看了看通往学院的小路，又回头看了看她。

Peep looked down the path toward the academy, then back at her.

好吧，他说着，从树枝上跳了下来。

Okay, he said and dropped down from the branch.

学院大门比路上还要热闹。

The Academy gates were busier than the path had been.

各种大小的生物朝各个方向移动，有的自信满满，有的显然不是。

Creatures of all sizes moving in every direction, some confident, some clearly not.

皮普紧挨着布布，直到他们穿过大门。

Peep stayed close to Boo Boo's side until they were through the gate.

然后他停了下来。

Then he stopped.

一个年轻的地精独自站在庭院墙边，双手紧紧抓着包，眼睛看着周围的一切，唯独不看身边的生物。

A young gnome stood alone near the courtyard wall, bag clutched in both hands, looking at everything except the creatures around him.
