Speaker 0

My name's Leslie.

Speaker 0

And my name's Caroline.

Speaker 0

And welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.

Speaker 0

Mia is starving and cannot wait to get home.

Speaker 0

She is super hungry after gym class and doesn't have her emergency granola bar in her bag.

Speaker 0

Her friend Aven tries to give her suggestions of people she can ask for a snack, but Mia says no.

Speaker 0

She really wants the cheesy crackers that are in her cupboard at home if her brother hasn't eaten them already.

Speaker 0

Considering the circumstances.

Speaker 0

Mia was bent over holding her stomach on the bus ride home from school.

Speaker 0

She wasn't sick or anything like that.

Speaker 0

Today was gym class, and gym class always made her hungry.

Speaker 0

You look like you're going to puke, said Aven, who sat beside her.

Speaker 0

Aven was her best bus friend and lived near her house, so they sometimes hung out together after school.

Speaker 0

Though lately, they both had too much homework to do, which is not as fun as sitting around talking about Alex and his booger friends.

Speaker 0

If you are, can you point it at Alex over there?

Speaker 0

He's been bugging me all day.

Speaker 0

I'm not going to puke.

Speaker 0

I'm just, like, really hungry all of a sudden.

Speaker 0

Stupid gym class.

Speaker 0

Mia straightened up.

Speaker 0

And my emergency granola bar supply has run out, and I forgot to ask mom for more.

Speaker 0

Oh, I ate my last snack while we were waiting on the bus.

Speaker 0

You could ask Jason.

Speaker 0

He always has food in his bag.

Speaker 0

I think he has a whole grocery store in there sometimes.

Speaker 0

I'll be fine once my stomach stops growling.

Speaker 0

We're almost at my stop anyway.

Speaker 0

And if my brother hasn't eaten everything, there should be cheesy crackers in the cupboard.

Speaker 0

Oh, processed cheese snacks.

Speaker 0

Aven made an extremely serious face.

Speaker 0

My favorite.

Speaker 0

Before long, the bus slowed and its lights started flashing.

Speaker 0

Mia

Mia got up.

Speaker 0

See you tomorrow at school.

Speaker 0

Bye.

Speaker 0

Mia's bus stop was just around the corner from her house, which suited her fine, except in winter when she had to not only walk to the bus stop, but sometimes wait there for what seemed like hours in the freezing cold.

Speaker 0

Whenever she complained, her dad would just bring up some silly story about how he had to walk to school in winter in bare feet carrying three bags of books and eating a bowl of yucky oatmeal or something.

Speaker 0

He just didn't understand the hardships of being a kid.

Speaker 0

She walked along the street past Peter's house.

Speaker 0

He was in seventh grade now, so wouldn't play basketball with her as much.

Speaker 0

And then Trish's house, which was the house with the basketball hoop they used to use.

Speaker 0

She was, like, seven feet tall and played on the high school basketball team.

Speaker 0

Mia thought she was the coolest person alive.

Speaker 0

Mom wouldn't let her color her hair red like Trish yet.

Speaker 0

As she walked past old man Withers' house, he gave the best candy at Halloween and was their next next door neighbor.

Speaker 0

She had the funny feeling that she was missing something, that something wasn't quite right.

Speaker 0

Then she stopped.

Speaker 0

She rubbed her eyes.

Speaker 0

Her brother Pete was sitting on the front lawn eating crackers, her cheesy crackers, in front of a large empty rectangle of dirt where their house used to be.

Speaker 0

Their house was now floating above the treetops.

Speaker 0

It had become the largest tree house in the history of tree houses.

Speaker 0

She wobbled over and sat beside him.

Speaker 0

Yep.

Speaker 0

I know, but don't know.

Speaker 0

He crunched another cracker.

Speaker 0

I got home about twenty minutes ago, and it was already up there.

Speaker 0

Mom's in the kitchen.

Speaker 0

Doesn't seem to know.

Speaker 0

I just wanted a snack.

Speaker 0

I grabbed your cheesy crackers, by the way.

Speaker 0

Considering the circumstances, I figured you'd understand.

Speaker 0

Mia wasn't sure she did.

Speaker 0

How did you get up there?

Speaker 0

Mia asked.

Speaker 0

I figured it out.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But how?

Speaker 0

I figured it out, he said again, and looked at a cracker like it was the most interesting thing in the yard.

Speaker 0

Mia got up and did a lap around the house.

Speaker 0

The porch was way out of reach.

Speaker 0

The kitchen window, usually propped open when mom cooked, was up there too, and whatever she was making smelled like garlic and something else good.

Speaker 0

Dinner was going to be really great.

Speaker 0

Mia needed to be inside for that.

Speaker 0

She counted the distance with her eyes.

Speaker 0

12 feet, maybe 15.

Speaker 0

She wasn't good at measurements.

Speaker 0

From down here, she could see the muddy bottoms of the porch steps.

Speaker 0

She had never seen the bottoms of the porch steps before.

Speaker 0

She did see a dinosaur toy she thought had run away when she was in first grade.

Speaker 0

Her stomach growled loud enough that Pete heard it.

Speaker 0

There are still crackers in the cupboard, he said helpfully.

Speaker 0

Mia walked the perimeter again, this time looking for something useful, something that might help get some cheesy crackers.

Speaker 0

The latter, her first thought was in the garage.

Speaker 0

The garage was also floating.

Speaker 0

She stood there for a few seconds looking at it, then moved on.

Speaker 0

The fence along the side yard was pretty high.

Speaker 0

It used to be really high, but she'd grown, perhaps because her brother had never discovered the crackers.

Speaker 0

Till now.

Speaker 0

She climbed onto the top rail, which wobbled, and stood there with her arms out.

Speaker 0

The porch was still extremely far away.

Speaker 0

Pete watched from the lawn.

Speaker 0

He didn't say anything, but he was making a scrunchy face.

Speaker 0

She got down.

Speaker 0

The kitchen window was open.

Speaker 0

Mom always opened it when she cooked.

Speaker 0

If she could just get mom's attention, maybe mom could figure something out.

Speaker 0

Adults were supposed to be good at that, or so they say.

Speaker 0

Mia picked up a stick and threw it at the window.

Speaker 0

It missed.

Speaker 0

She found another one and threw that.

Speaker 0

It hit the siding with a thunk.

Speaker 0

Mom appeared at the window, looked down, saw Mia standing in the yard, and waved.

Speaker 0

Mia waved back.

Speaker 0

Mom went back to whatever she was doing.

Speaker 0

The smell coming out of the window smelled really good.

Speaker 0

Her stomach kinda felt like it jumped all by itself.

Speaker 0

Mia put her hands on her hips and looked at the oak tree on the side of the house.

Speaker 0

It was a good tree.

Speaker 0

She'd climbed it plenty of times when she was younger, not as much lately.

Speaker 0

One big branch ran out toward the porch roof, not all the way, but toward it.

Speaker 0

She looked at Pete.

Speaker 0

Don't, he said.

Speaker 0

She was already walking toward it.

Speaker 0

Climbing the tree was easier than she expected.

Speaker 0

She got to the main fork without much trouble, found her footing, and worked her way out along the big branch.

Speaker 0

It bent more than she remembered it bending.

Speaker 0

She waited a moment, but then kept going.

Speaker 0

The porch roof got closer.

Speaker 0

She could smell the garlic properly now and something else underneath it, something with butter.

Speaker 0

Her stomach had very strong opinions about this.

Speaker 0

She got to the end of the branch.

Speaker 0

The porch roof was right there, close enough to see the moss growing in the corner, close enough to read the numbers on the house if she squinted.

Speaker 0

But the branch had run out, and there was still a gap.

Speaker 0

A foot, maybe two.

Speaker 0

Jump, Pete called from below.

Speaker 0

You jump, she said.

Speaker 0

I'm eating.

Speaker 0

She looked at the gap for another second.

Speaker 0

Then she backed down the branch, climbed down the tree, and sat on the grass beside her brother.

Speaker 0

Pete held out the bag.

Speaker 0

One cracker left.

Speaker 0

She took it.

Speaker 0

It was completely whole and seemed a little bit suspicious.

Speaker 0

She ate it anyway.

Speaker 0

After a while, she got up and walked around to the back of the house.

Speaker 0

She sat there looking at the house from a different angle now, not the porch side, the back corner where the kitchen met the addition her dad had built, which had taken three summers and was still not completely done according to her mom.

Speaker 0

There was a drainpipe on that corner, and below the kitchen window, her mom's herb box, the long wooden one she'd planted basil in last spring.

Speaker 0

The basil had not really worked out, but the box was still there bolted to the siding, and it looked solid enough.

Speaker 0

Probably.

Speaker 0

Pete wandered over.

Speaker 0

What are you looking at?

Speaker 0

The drainpipe.

Speaker 0

He was quiet for a moment.

Speaker 0

Oh, he said.

Speaker 0

Then do you want a boost?

Speaker 0

Mia looked at him.

Speaker 0

He was two inches shorter than her and had just eaten most of a box of crackers.

Speaker 0

I'm fine, she said.

Speaker 0

She grabbed the drainpipe with both hands and got her feet against the siding.

Speaker 0

It held.

Speaker 0

She went up slowly, testing each move before she committed to it, the way her dad had taught her on the climbing wall at the rec center, the one time they'd gone.

Speaker 0

The bracket at the bottom groaned but stayed.

Speaker 0

The one at the top looked better.

Speaker 0

She got level with the herb box, shifted her weight onto it.

Speaker 0

It creaked and one side dipped in a way she didn't love and reached up for the windowsill.

Speaker 0

Her fingers caught it.

Speaker 0

The window was still open thankfully, and the smell of garlic and butter hit her directly in the face, which was not helpful when her arms were shaking.

Speaker 0

She hung there for a second.

Speaker 0

Then she hauled herself up and dropped into the kitchen.

Speaker 0

Her mom looked over from the stove.

Speaker 0

Oh, hi.

Speaker 0

How was school?

Speaker 0

Fine, Mia said, brushing bark off her hands.

Speaker 0

Dinner in twenty minutes.

Speaker 0

Don't spoil your appetite.

Speaker 0

Mia opened the cupboard.

Speaker 0

The cheesy crackers were still there.

Speaker 0

Pete had taken some but left the rest, which was decent of him.

Speaker 0

She pulled the box down and stood at the kitchen window looking out.

Speaker 0

Pete was still in the yard, sitting in the same spot, looking up at her.

Speaker 0

She held up the box.

Speaker 0

He made a face that said, and what exactly am I supposed to do with that?

Speaker 0

She thought about it, then she went to the junk drawer.

Speaker 0

The one next to the stove that had batteries in it and rubber bands and a tape measure and approximately 9,000 twist ties and found a ball of string.

Speaker 0

She tied one end around the cracker box, not very neatly, and lowered it out the window.

Speaker 0

It swayed a little on the way down.

Speaker 0

Pete had to walk over to catch it, but he got it.

Speaker 0

He looked up at her.

Speaker 0

She looked down at him.

Speaker 0

He gave her a small nod, which was about as much as she was going to get, and opened the box.

Speaker 0

Mia stayed at the window for a minute.

Speaker 0

The yard looked different from up here.

Speaker 0

Not that different.

Speaker 0

Same fence, same oak tree, same rectangle of dirt where the front steps used to be, but different enough.

Speaker 0

She could see into mister Withers' yard next door.

Speaker 0

He had a garden back there she'd never known about.

Speaker 0

Tomatoes mostly, still red on the vine this late in the season.

Speaker 0

The house moved a little, not much, just a slow, easy sway, like it was getting comfortable.

Speaker 0

Her mom was still at the stove, stirring something, humming a song Mia half recognized but couldn't name.

Speaker 0

The kitchen smelled like the best version of a Friday, garlic and butter and something baking underneath everything else.

Speaker 0

Mom, Mia said.

Speaker 0

Mia looked out the window again.

Speaker 0

Pete had found a good spot on the lawn and was working through the crackers with great concentration.

Speaker 0

Nothing, she said.

Speaker 0

Just checking.

Speaker 0

She got herself a glass of water and sat down at the kitchen table with her homework.

Speaker 0

Fractions, which she did not love.

Speaker 0

But dinner was in twenty minutes, and the house was floating, and Pete had crackers, and mom was humming, and sometimes things were just the way they were.

Speaker 0

She opened her notebook and found her pencil and got to work.

Speaker 0

The house floated on.

Speaker 0

And that is the end of our story.

Speaker 0

Good night.

Speaker 0

Sleep Tight.
