My name is Timmy, and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.
Don was rescued from the pound by his new friend Rex and went home to live with him.
Rex was so thankful that Don had saved him, he didn't want to leave the pound without him.
Don was too large to live in the house, but had a nice warm place in a barn where it was warm and dry.
He had all he wanted to eat and clean water when he was thirsty, and he visited with Rex often.
One day Alice was having a party, and Don got dressed up and brought into the house to take part.
Don the Runaway Dog part eight.
For several weeks, Don lived in the barn behind Alice's house.
It was a fine barn, warm and dry, and he had all he wanted to eat and clean water whenever he was thirsty.
Sometimes he was brought into the house to play with Rex, who was very fond of his big shaggy friend, and often Rex trotted out to the barn to visit him.
It was a good life, but Don still thought of the farm and of Bob every single day.
One morning, Alice came out to the barn with a red ribbon in her hand.
There you are, Don, she said.
I'm having a party this afternoon, and I want you to come and do your tricks and look your very best.
So hold still while I tie this bow on you.
When the ribbon was tied round his neck, Alice led Don into the house.
Now Don didn't know much about parties, especially girl parties.
On the farm, there had never been any parties except for the boys, and those were mostly for fishing or gathering nuts.
And nobody wore a ribbon to those.
This was quite different.
Don was led into the parlor, and there sat ever so many little girls in white dresses with wide sashes of every color.
Some of the sashes near as big as the girls themselves.
On the other side of the room stood the boys in dark suits and big white collars looking scrubbed and stiff.
Thought Don, looking around at the mall.
Everybody's dressed up so fine.
It must be Sunday.
That's why I've got to wear this red ribbon.
Yes, it must be Sunday.
For on the farm, Dan had always seen Bob and his family put on their good clothes on a Sunday, so he thought that must be what was happening now.
But it wasn't Sunday at all.
It was only Alice's party.
Oh, what a lovely big dog, cried the girls.
Is he yours, Alice?
We found him in the pound, said Alice, and he can do tricks too.
Hello, Don, called Rex, who was lying grandly on his blue silk cushion.
Mind you, behave your prettiest now.
This is a party.
I'll try, said Don with a little soft bark.
He was careful not to bark too loud, for there were fine vases up on the mantle, and he was afraid of shaking one down.
Now Don said Alice, show everyone how you stand on your hind legs.
So Don stood on his hind legs, just as he used to do for Bob.
Then he marched about like a soldier, and the boys and girls clapped and laughed.
Do another.
Do another, the children begged.
So Don rolled over and sat up and begged and balanced a little cake right on the end of his nose, holding still as a clock until Alice said he might eat it.
Then he flipped it up and caught it, snap in his teeth.
How they laughed at that.
Just then a big boy came into the parlor, bigger than any of the other children there.
Alice ran to him.
Oh, Cousin Bob, I was afraid you couldn't come.
You live so far off in the country.
I'm so glad you're here.
I wouldn't miss your party for anything, said the big boy.
I came all the way on the train.
Why, Alice, you've got a new dog.
是的。
Yes.
I found him in the pound where they'd taken Rex and But Alice stopped because her cousin Bob had gone very still, staring at Don in a strange way.
And Don was staring back at Bob.
Why, said Bob slowly, why that dog.
He looks just like I do believe it's my own dog, Don, that ran away from the farm all those weeks ago.
It's Don.
And now Don didn't care two straws about the vases.
He barked as loud as ever he could.
Woof.
Woof.
Of course I'm Don, and you're my boy Bob.
I'd know you anywhere.
He sprang across the room, rose up, and put his paws on Bob's shoulders, licking his boy's face and hands.
Oh, look, it's another trick, cried the children.
No, said Bob, laughing with his arms around the dog's neck.
This is no trick.
Don's just glad to see me, aren't you, old fellow?
Oh, Don, where have you been all this time?
Don barked and whined and wagged and tried to do six things at once.
He was so happy.
And Bob hugged him tight, so glad to have his lost dog back again.
For a moment, Bob didn't say anything at all.
He just held on to Don with his face pressed into the dog's shaggy neck, the way you do when you've got back something you thought was gone for good.
Then he laughed and wiped his eyes on his sleeve and said, well, Don, you have led us a chase.
And he's really your dog?
Asked Alice.
He really is, said Bob.
Though it's the strangest thing in the world to find him here at your party.
However did you get him?
So Alice told the whole story.
How Rex had been carried off, and how she'd found him in the pound, and how Rex hadn't wanted to leave without his big friend.
And so we brought Don home and kept him ever since, said Alice.
But of course he's yours, Bob.
You must take him back.
Thank you, said Bob.
We've missed him so at the farm.
Squinty's forever getting out of his pen, and Don's the only one who can fetch him back.
We need you at home, Don.
Will you be glad to go back?
Asked Rex, for the two dogs could follow something of what was being said.
I think I shall, said Don.
It's been very nice here, and I like you ever so much.
But I need room to run.
Someday you must come to the country and see me.
Perhaps I shall, said Rex.
Though if I come, I shall come in the car and bring my blue silk cushion.
I'm quite used to it, you know.
Don licked the little poodle's ear, for they had been good friends through a hard time, and he would not forget it.
Then the party went on, with Don doing all his best tricks for Bob, and the children ate ice cream and cake, and there was a great deal of clapping and laughing.
But how am I to get Don all the way home?
Wondered Bob when the party was over.
You can ride in father's car, said Alice.
That's how we brought Don from the pound.
Don can ride with you.
That'll do nicely, said Bob.
So the next day it was time to go.
Don and Rex touched noses the way dogs do when they say goodbye, and Rex told him to be sure to watch out for tin cans and dog catchers.
And Don promised that he would.
Then he and Bob set off for the farm in the big car, with Alice riding along holding Rex in her lap.
Well, this is a good deal better than trotting on three legs, thought Don, whose sore foot was all healed now.
They were about halfway to the farm when the car had to stop, for the air had gone out of one of the tires.
And James, who drove the car, climbed out to put a new one on.
While they waited in the shade of a tree by the road, they heard a horn playing somewhere up ahead.
What's that?
Said Alice.
A band?
It doesn't sound quite like a band, said Bob.
And it wasn't.
Don caught a wild sort of animal smell in the air, the very same smell from the day the circus wagons rolled by when Squinty ran away.
Then around the bend came two men, one of them carrying a horn and the other leading a big brown bear.
Oh, a bear, cried Alice, shrinking back.
I'm frightened.
There's no need, said Bob.
It's only a tame, trained bear.
See?
He does tricks.
Don and Rex both barked.
But to their great surprise, the bear answered them in the animal talk that only they could understand.
Don't be afraid, said the bear kindly.
I won't hurt anybody.
I only do tricks.
Watch.
And when the men gave the word, the bear turned to somersault and marched up and down like a soldier and even climbed right up a telephone pole.
There, said the bear, sitting down again.
Isn't that a good one?
It certainly is, said Don.
I can do a few tricks myself, but I could never climb up a telephone pole.
Oh, I've plenty more tricks, said the bear cheerfully.
My name is Dido.
I am having a fine time traveling around the country and seeing new places.
By then, the new tire was on, and so they drove away and left Dido the bear sitting on the grass in the sun, eating a bun that the men had given him.
A little while later, Don was back on the farm at last.
And, oh, what a welcome he got.
Sally came running and threw both arms around his neck.
Bob's mother said she never thought to see that dog again.
Even the big red rooster crowed a cheerful cock a doodle doo from behind his wire fence, which was his way of saying he was glad.
And there was Don's own old kennel waiting for him with fresh clean straw in it.
As soon as he could, Don trotted off to see Squinty.
Well, if it isn't Don, where in the world have you been?
Asked the funny pig.
Oh, pretty nearly everywhere, said Don.
Has anything happened here while I was gone?
Has it?
Said Squinty.
I was bought by a boy, and I ran away.
And I even went up in a balloon once.
I've had no end of adventures, he paused.
But do you know?
I was glad to get home again.
So was I, said Don, glad as glad can be.
And I'll tell you something, Squinty.
I'm never going to run away, not ever again.
Then Don went and dug up a good juicy bone and lay down in the warm straw of his own kennel to enjoy it.
Home at last where he belonged.
And so we say goodnight to Don, the runaway dog.
And that is the end of our story.
Good night.
Sleep Tight.
