Now on to our story.
Have you ever worked really hard on something and couldn't wait to show it to someone?
Grace worked very hard on her homework and had it all ready to hand in the next morning.
When she walked into her room, she couldn't believe what she saw.
What was she going to do now?
My dog ate my homework.
Grace stood there looking at her homework, or what used to be her homework.
It was now just a pile of gooey shredded paper on the floor, and she had to hand it all in tomorrow morning.
She had just opened the door to her room when Buster, their hyper black Labrador, had raced out, did the zoomies, and tore down the hallway, likely to hide under the table where he thought he might be able to hide from Grace.
He probably thought she would chase him and play, which she usually did.
But not now.
Now she was upset, and no amount of cute puppy eyes and bitey bites were going to change that.
Mom, buster ate my homework.
As soon as she said it, she knew how it sounded.
No teacher in the history of teachers had ever actually believed those words.
It sat right up there with, I left it at school, and my little brother drew all over it.
And the all time classic, I thought it was due next week.
The hall of fame of excuses nobody believed, and Grace had just added her name to the list.
Her mother appeared in the doorway, took one look at the floor, and said nothing, perhaps because she seemed to be holding her breath.
Oh my.
This isn't good, is it?
对。
No.
It isn't.
Do you know how hard I worked on this all weekend?
I skipped ringette practice, mom.
Ringette.
Gracie, he's just a puppy.
He doesn't know better.
Maybe not.
But is this what my supposed best friend is supposed to do?
Ruin my life?
Her mother pressed her lips together and put her finger to her lips.
She made that same gesture when she tried to help Grace with her math homework.
I could write a note to your teacher.
She won't believe you.
I could take a photo of the mess.
Grace looked at the pile of shredded paper on the floor.
It looked ridiculous.
Maybe that was actually not the worst idea.
But still, who is to say I didn't spread peanut butter over paper and have Buster do it on purpose?
My math is due tomorrow, and I worked too hard on it.
I'll just have to reprint the worksheets and rewrite all the answers.
It won't take that long now that I already know them, and my English essay can wait until tomorrow morning.
You shouldn't stay up too late, Grace.
Getting a good night's sleep is important.
I know, but so is math.
I mean, math is important too.
Her mother smiled a small smile and said she'd stay up a little longer in case Grace needed help.
It wasn't a complete disaster.
Buster had mostly chewed up the easy parts.
Grace pulled up the math worksheets on the computer, printed them out, and sat down at her desk.
Buster did not hide under the table for long.
Within ten minutes, he had padded quietly back down the hallway and was now lying on the floor beside her chair with his chin on her foot, which was his way of saying he was sorry without having to actually do anything about it.
Grace did not look at him.
She was being firm about that.
She rewrote the first worksheet in her neatest print, Then the second.
It was going faster than she expected, which was the one good thing about already knowing all the answers.
Which took her all day to find out.
Her pencil quickly moved down the page, and she was almost starting to feel okay about the whole situation when her dad appeared in the doorway.
I heard about the homework situation, he said with a smile.
I have a suggestion.
Grace looked up.
She knew what was coming.
Her dad found the positive in everything, and sometimes when it didn't involve math.
It was funny.
Laminate the shredded pieces and hand them in as is.
Tell Mrs.
Burke it adds character.
爸。
Dad.
Or we could glue them back together like a puzzle, a math puzzle.
Dad, it's not funny, you know.
I'm just saying, who would make this up?
She definitely believe you.
Nobody invents this excuse and then actually has evidence.
Her mom appeared behind him in the hallway.
She gave him a serious look.
He nodded and said, you guys are too serious, and promptly went back to the living room to watch television.
Grace turned back to her desk.
The math was done by nine.
The English essay was a different problem.
She unfolded what was left of it on the desk and tried to read the surviving sentences, which wasn't easy because Buster had chewed and drooled with real commitment and left very little behind.
She could make out the opening paragraph and something near the end that might have been her conclusion.
The middle was just about indecipherable.
She pushed it to one side and yawned.
I think I'll leave it until tomorrow morning, before school.
Her mom came in at 09:30, turned off the hall light, told her not to stay up too much longer.
Grace said she wouldn't.
She closed her notebook, capped her pencil, and leaned back in her chair.
Buster was asleep on her foot.
He was snoring slightly, which should not have been as cute as it was.
Almost, she thought as she looked at him.
Almost forgiven.
Grace was up before her alarm made that terrible noise.
She sat at her desk in her pajamas with what was left of her English essay spread out in front of her, trying to reconstruct the middle from memory.
It was easier than she expected.
She had written it twice in her head on the way to sleep, which was not exactly restful but turned out to be useful.
By 07:15, she had a full draft.
By 07:30, she was dressed and had her bag packed and was eating toast and peanut butter standing up at the kitchen counter.
You're up early, her mom said.
I had to finish my essay.
Her mom looked at her and smiled into her coffee cup.
She didn't usually smile so early.
Buster was circling the kitchen doing his morning routine, which involved checking his bowl, checking the back door, checking Grace's toast, licking people's toes or pulling on their socks, and then starting over.
Grace held her toast slightly higher.
Buster looked up at her.
Don't, she said, looking down at him.
Buster sat down and let out a little whimper.
Claire was in her usual seat by the window just past the middle of the bus when Grace got on.
It wasn't as bouncy as the back while not being in the front where Claire didn't like to sit.
Grace sat down beside her, put her bag on her lap, and let out an audible sigh.
You okay?
Claire asked.
Buster ate my homework last night.
Claire stared at her.
Like, really?
Like, really.
Grace.
Claire put her hand over her mouth, which could have meant anything.
That's literally the oldest excuse ever.
I mean, no one, not even Jackie, would think to attempt it.
I know.
伯克
Mrs.
Burke is going to think you made it up.
I know.
Did you redo it?
All of it.
Stayed up super late.
Well, almost super late.
Claire picked at the edge of her seat cover.
Okay, but here's an idea.
You could just not say anything.
Just hand it in.
It's all there, right?
Why make it weird?
Grace nodded.
I'll just hand it in and say nothing.
Grace thought about that.
It was redone.
It was neat.
The whole point of staying up late was so nobody would have to know.
Yeah, she said.
Yeah, Okay.
Grace looked out the window.
Hand it in.
Say nothing.
Move on.
It sounded easy on the bus.
伯克
Mrs.
Burke had a mug on her desk that said, I teach.
What's your superpower?
And reading glasses that she wore on a chain around her neck and never actually put on her face.
She had been teaching grade six for longer than maybe her parents had been alive, and many said she had eyes in the back of her head.
Grace sat in her seat and watched the clock.
Math was first.
Missus Burke collected the worksheets row by row, working her way to the back of the class.
Grace had her pages stacked neatly, her name written at the top of each one.
She handed them over when the pile reached her, and that was that.
Grace breathed out slowly.
English was after morning break.
She had the essay in her folder, all three pages, handwritten because she hadn't had time to type it up again.
The handwriting was neat.
The pages looked like pages, which was exactly how they were supposed to look.
She went outside for morning break and played Foursquare with Claire and two kids from the other grade four class and tried not to think about it.
She was mostly successful.
When they came back in, Mrs.
Burke asked everyone to pass their essays to the front.
Grace took hers out of the folder.
Claire glanced over from the next desk.
Grace looked straight ahead and passed the pages forward.
She watched them travel up the row, joining the growing pile on the desk in front, then the one in front of that, until they reached the front, and Mrs.
Burke collected the whole row and set it on her desk without looking.
Grace had almost fully convinced herself it was over when Mrs.
Burke said, Grace, can I see you for a minute?
The class did the thing classes do, which is go very quiet in a very loud way.
Claire gave Grace a look that said, I told you so, and good luck at the same time.
Chairs creaked as people turned to look.
She could hear some people snickering and someone was holding their breath, which they should stop doing soon.
Claire mouthed something at her that Grace didn't quite catch but understood anyway.
Grace walked to the front of the class.
伯克
Mrs.
Burke had her essay in her hand.
She turned it over and pointed to the bottom corner of the last page, where a small but undeniable tooth mark had left a crescent shaped dent in the paper.
Grace had hoped nobody would notice that.
Do you want to tell me about this?
伯克
Mrs.
Burke asked.
Not unkindly, just the way she said most things, which was directly.
Grace took a breath.
My dog ate my homework, she said.
I know how that sounds, but he actually did.
He got into my room and shredded most of it, and I had to reprint the math worksheets and rewrite the essay from scratch this morning.
My mom offered to write a note.
She also took a photo of the mess if you need to see it.
伯克
Mrs.
Burke looked at her for a moment.
I have a golden retriever, she said.
He ate my reading glasses last spring.
She nodded at the chain around her neck.
That's why I keep them here now.
She set the essays down on the pile with the others.
Good work getting it done, she said.
Go sit down.
Grace walked back to her seat.
Claire raised both eyebrows.
Grace sat down and opened her notebook and said nothing.
But she was smiling, and Claire could see that, so it didn't really matter.
After school, Grace came through the front door of their house, and Buster was there to greet her before she had both feet inside, doing the thing he always did when she came home, which was act as though she had been gone for three years instead of six hours.
He spun in circles.
He whined.
He jumped up and down.
He nudged her hand with his nose.
He even picked up a shoe from the rack by the door and carried it around like a trophy, then promptly set it back because he knew he wasn't allowed to make their shoes gooey.
Grace dropped her backpack.
She sat down on the floor in the entrance and let him climb half onto her lap, which he was much too big to do but had never accepted.
All that worry.
All those rewritten pages.
The tooth mark in the corner that she'd stared at all through morning break convinced it would be the end of her.
She scratched behind his ears, and he went still for a moment his whole back end wagging.
Buster let out a small smile.
You are such a pain, Grace said.
He licked her face which was a yes.
And that is the end of our story.
Good night.
Sleep Tight.
