Hello friends, and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.
Nicole and her mother have spent lots of time looking at the books, pictures, and information they have, but they still have questions.
Each time they think they have figured something out, they find something new.
When Nicole wakes up, she decides it is time to go see Marcus' grandmother and see if she has any answers.
Nicole and the Box in the Barn part 30.
Nicole woke up thinking about her father.
Not in a sad way, just thinking.
The ceiling crack was there the same as always crooked lightning bolt, like an old friend.
She lay there for a minute, looking at it the way she sometimes did when something was settling itself out in her head.
Her father had been 12 when he'd come to this farm.
He'd asked questions nobody answered and ended up on a list.
Just like Donald Dunn and maybe in her own way just like her.
She turned that over for a moment.
Three people, three different times, all finding their way to the same place without quite knowing why.
That could feel like something scary.
But lying here in the early morning with the house quiet around her and the garden just visible through the curtain, it didn't feel scary at all.
It felt like a pattern and patterns meant something.
She got up, got dressed, went downstairs.
Her mom was at the counter with her coffee, looking out the kitchen window at the garden the way she'd started doing in the mornings.
Nicole poured herself some juice and stood beside her for a moment.
I want to go to Marcus' grand's house, Nicole said, today if we can.
Her mom looked at her, not surprised exactly, more like she'd been wondering when Nicole was going to say it.
Are you sure?
对。
Yeah.
Nicole looked out at the garden, the apple tree, the berry bushes, the path winding toward the door.
I think it's time.
We've been reading about it long enough.
I want to actually go and see.
Her mom nodded slowly.
I'll call his mother this morning.
Okay, Nicole said.
She ate her toast and peanut butter and felt, for the first time in weeks, like she knew what the next right thing was.
After breakfast, her mom called Marcus' mother, and by early afternoon they were turning down a road Nicole hadn't been on before, looking for a small white house with green shutters.
Mrs.
Dunn's house was set back from the road behind a row of spruce trees that had probably been planted before anyone currently living there was born.
There was a mat at the front door that said Welcome in letters that had almost worn away, and a pot of dead flowers beside it that nobody had gotten around to dealing with yet.
Nicole liked it immediately.
Marcus answered the door, which she hadn't expected.
He looked mildly surprised to see her mom too, but recovered quickly.
Gran's in the kitchen, he said.
She's been up since seven.
She made squares.
The inside of the house was exactly what Nicole had imagined: photographs on every surface, a smell of baking, and something faintly like cedar furniture that had been in the same spots for a long time.
A cat appeared from somewhere and regarded Nicole briefly before deciding she wasn't interested in leaving.
Mrs.
Dunn was small and quick moving, with white hair and the kind of handshake that meant business.
She was thrilled.
That was the only word for it.
She shook Nicole's mom's hand and then took both of Nicole's hands in hers and said, So you're the one living on the McLean Farm.
I can't tell you how glad I am someone's there again.
She sat them down and produced tea and a plate of date squares, and asked questions, just like Marcus had promised.
Was the big barn still standing?
还在。
It was.
Was the apple tree still there, the old one near the garden?
It was, and it was enormous.
Had they done anything with the garden yet?
Nicole said, Yes, actually.
The garden was beautiful.
Mrs.
Dunn smiled like this was the best news she'd heard in a while.
She talked about her husband's grandfather, Donald, the way you talked about someone who had become a story more than a memory.
He'd worked that farm for two seasons, she said.
Loved the place.
Always said there was something about it he couldn't put his finger on.
Good soil, yes, but more than that.
Like the place was She paused, looking for the word.
Alive somehow, more than other farms.
Nicole kept her hands around her mug and her face very still.
Then Mrs.
Dunn reached under the table and brought out the box.
It was smaller than Nicole had imagined, an old shoebox with a piece of brown string tied around it.
She undid the string carefully, the way you did with something you'd opened many times and wanted to keep intact.
Inside, letters folded small and yellowed, a little notebook with a cracked cover, and the photograph face down on top.
Missus Dunn handed it to Nicole.
Nicole turned it over.
The farm, unmistakably, the barn with the red doors, the farmhouse behind, the fence line she walked past every single day.
Taken from the lane on a summer day a long time ago, the light falling in that particular island way she'd come to recognize.
Two figures near the barn a man she didn't know, youngish in work clothes, standing with his arms at his sides and a woman.
Nicole's hands went very still.
She knew that face.
She would have known it anywhere.
Margaret.
Nicole looked at the photo for a long moment.
Then she looked up at Mrs.
Dunn who was watching her with a warm, curious expression, waiting to see what she'd make of it.
Do you know who the woman is?
Nicole asked carefully.
Mrs.
Dunn shook her head.
We never did figure that out.
Donald mentioned a woman in a couple of his letters, said she was kind to him, but he never wrote her name down.
She paused.
Funny face to forget, isn't it?
She looks like someone you'd remember.
Yeah, Nicole said she does.
They stayed a little longer, finishing their tea while Mrs.
Dunn told more stories about Donald and the farm.
When they finally got up to leave, Mrs.
Dunn pressed the photograph into Nicole's hands.
You take it for a while, she said.
It belongs there more than it belongs in a shoebox.
Nicole's mom thanked her and Marcus walked them to the door and the cat appeared again briefly and then disappeared.
Outside, the spruce trees moved in the wind, and the dead flowers in the pot rattled a little.
They got in the car.
Nicole kept the photograph in her lap, face up.
She wanted to keep looking at it.
Her mom didn't say anything until they'd turned out of Mrs.
Dunn's road and were back on the main road heading home.
The fields rolled past.
A flock of starlings moved across the sky at once, changing shape the way they did, like one big thing instead of a thousand small ones.
Margaret was there, Nicole said, in 1943 when Donald Dunn was working on the farm.
I saw, her mom said.
So she knew him.
She must have.
Nicole looked at Margaret's face in the photograph.
The same face from the market.
The same face from the 1892 photograph in the attic.
The same face that had appeared in Angus's farmyard like she'd been there all along.
She knew what happened to him, Nicole said, when Angus's dad got him let go.
Her mom was quiet for a moment.
Probably.
So why didn't she stop it?
Her mom didn't answer that.
The fields kept going past.
The photograph was warm in Nicole's lap.
Or maybe that was just her hands.
I need to ask her, Nicole said.
I know, her mom said.
Nicole went straight to the garden when they got home straight from the car, across the yard, and through the gate.
The garden felt different the moment she stepped inside, more alive or present than it had been.
The small, late flowers turned toward her all at once, and the apple tree made a sound like it was moving with the wind, though there was no wind.
Nicole sat down by the pond.
She put the photograph on the grass in front of her and opened the book.
She turned the pages slowly.
The familiar illustrations, the ones she knew by heart now.
The dragon, the market, the hillside city, the garden door.
Then a page she hadn't seen before.
It wasn't a small illustration tucked in a corner.
It was a full page, the most the book had ever shown at once.
The farm, painted in careful detail, the way it must have looked when everything still stood.
Both barns, the guardian's house with smoke coming from the chimney and flowers in the window boxes.
The garden in full summer, every plant visible and named in tiny careful script she'd need a magnifying glass to read.
And figures, several of them going about their work.
A man near the fence, a woman hanging washing, two children running between the buildings.
Nicole found Margaret immediately.
She was standing at the garden gate of course she was But she wasn't looking at Nicole.
She was looking across the yard at someone near the barn.
A young man.
Working, his back half turned.
Nicole looked at the photograph in the grass beside her, then back at the book.
The same man.
She was almost certain.
You were watching over him, she said quietly.
The whole time you were watching over him too.
The garden went very still.
Then, slowly, every flower still standing turned toward her.
All of them at once, the way they did when the garden wanted her to know she'd understood something true.
Nicole didn't move for a long time.
The pond was perfectly still beside her.
The afternoon light was going golden over the fields.
Somewhere in the apple tree, a bird was making a small, satisfied sound.
She closed the book carefully and set it in her lap.
Then she looked up at the sky for a while.
Eventually she got up, brushed off her jeans, and went inside.
After dinner Nicole went upstairs.
She put the photograph on her desk, propped against her pencil holder where she could see it.
Margaret's face, calm and clear, standing near the barn on a summer day a long time ago.
Nicole looked at it for a moment, then got out a notebook from her school bag.
Not one of the special ones, just a regular spiral notebook with a slightly bent coverand opened it to the first page.
She sat there for a bit, pen in hand.
There was a lot she could writethe list of names, the photograph, Donald Dunn and her father and Margaret, and the way everything kept turning out to be connected to everything else.
She could write all of it, and still not be anywhere near the end of it.
Instead, she wrote one question at the top of the page in her regular handwriting, not trying to make it neat.
What kind of guardian am I going to be?
She looked at it for a while.
She didn't have the answer.
But she was starting to think that was okay.
That maybe the answer wasn't something you worked out in advance.
Maybe it was something you found out by doing it.
By going to Mrs.
Dunn's house.
By sitting in the garden.
By telling Emma just enough and no more, by being patient even when you didn't want to be.
She closed the notebook, turned off the lamp.
Outside the garden was quiet and dark.
The compass on her nightstand was warm, not pulling her anywhere, not telling her anything urgent.
Just there, like a friend saying goodnight.
She closed her eyes and smiled.
And that is the end of this part Goodnight Sleep Tight
