What is your favorite thing to have for breakfast?

吐司？

Toast?

鸡蛋？

Eggs?

麦片？

Cereal?

我们故事里的小女孩特别爱吃冰淇淋，她觉得早餐吃冰淇淋最棒了。

The little girl in our story loves ice cream and thinks it is the best thing to eat for breakfast.

但她爸妈可不这么认为。

But her parents don't agree.

她有个计划，想试一个星期看看会怎么样。

She has a plan and wants to try it out for a week and see what happens.

十升的快乐。

10 liters of happy.

香草冰淇淋是全世界最好的早餐。

Vanilla ice cream is the bestest thing to have for breakfast in the whole world.

也许是全宇宙最好的。

The universe maybe.

它很甜，虽然妈妈说我吃这个不好，但我觉得它能给我一整天的能量。

It's sweet, and even though mommy says it isn't good for me, I think it gives me the energy to get through the whole day.

而且它让我超级开心。

And it makes me super happy.

它甚至能帮我熬过数学课，这总该有点价值吧。

It even helps me get through math class, and that must count for something.

对吧？

Right?

不过我只喜欢那种好东西，就是那种在舌尖上有点麻酥酥的感觉的。

I only like the good stuff, though, the kind that tingles on your tongue.

我真的很喜欢那种。

I really like that a lot.

不是我爸从麦当劳带回来的那种难闻的，就因为它便宜。

Not the stinky stuff my dad brings home from McDonald's just because it was a good deal.

如果味道像屎一样，便宜有什么用？

What good is a good deal if it tastes like poo?

所以我就用我的零花钱买了10升，这样我知道这周不会吃完了。

That's why with my allowance, I bought 10 liters, so I know I won't run out this week.

这周会是开心的一周。

This is going to be a happy week.

我在闹钟响之前就醒了，甚至在我爸进来叫我之前，有时候他会来叫我，尤其是周一，起床更难。

I'm up before my alarm, before daddy even comes in to wake me, which happens sometimes, especially Mondays, when it's harder to get moving.

不过今天不是。

Not today, though.

今天是第一天。

Today is day one.

我得赶紧穿好衣服，快点下楼去。

Got to get dressed and get downstairs fast.

好东西就藏在那儿，在地下室的大冰柜里，那冰柜大得能装下无数冰淇淋，但里面大部分都是些无聊的东西。

That's where the good stuff is hiding, In the big freezer in the basement, that's big enough for a bazillion ice creams, but it's mostly full of boring things.

现在还没人起床，这挺好的。

No one is up yet, which is good.

首先，我得挑个碗，而且必须是我最喜欢的那个。

First, I need to pick the bowl, and it has to be my favorite.

就是那个深蓝色的、上面有花的碗，是我小时候奶奶给我的。

The deep one with the flowers on it that grandma gave me back when I was little.

当然，还有我最喜欢的勺子，就是那个勺头深、手柄握着舒服的那个。

And my favorite spoon, of course, the one with the deep part and the cozy handle.

地下室的门有点阴森森的，黑漆漆的，但我可不怕。

The basement door is kind of spooky and dark, but I'm not scared.

不过为了安全起见，我还是把灯打开了，以防万一。

I turn on the light for safety, though, just in case.

冰淇淋桶特别重，我觉得把它搬上楼差不多能算上一节体育课了。

The ice cream tub is super heavy, and I figure carrying it upstairs probably counts as a gym class.

抽屉里有个专用的冰淇淋勺，总是弄得脏兮兮的，我用它小心翼翼地挖了三勺。

We have a special scoop in the drawer that is always messy, which I use to take out three very careful scoops.

我其实特别想多吃点，但得留着吃一星期呢。

I really want more, but it has to last the week.

我站在台子边吃，因为桌子那边感觉太远了。

I eat standing up at the counter because the table feels too far away.

爸爸拖着步子走进厨房，眼睛还没睁开呢。

Daddy shuffles into the kitchen, but his eyes aren't open yet.

他有一种神奇的本事，好像迷迷糊糊也知道自己要去哪儿。

He has an amazing ability to sort of know where he is going.

妈妈说他不算早起的人，得花点时间才能把睡眼惺忪的样子换成傻乎乎的表情。

Mommy says he isn't a morning person and needs some time to get his silly face instead of his sleepy one.

我把碗放进了水槽而不是洗碗机，因为明天还要用，而且碗放进洗碗机里就会消失不见。

I put my bowl in the sink instead of the dishwasher because I'll need it again tomorrow, and bowls disappear when you put them in the machine.

我不知道它们去哪儿了。

I don't know where they go.

我觉得没人知道。

I don't think anybody does.

到了周二，我又做了同样的事。

When Tuesday arrives, I do the same thing.

爸爸看起来清醒了一点，他一边倒咖啡，一边盯着台子上的冰淇淋桶。

Daddy seems a little more awake and stares at the ice cream tub on the counter while he pours a cup of coffee.

我觉得他以为我们整晚都把它放在外面了。

I think he thinks we left it out all night.

当然没有。

We didn't, of course.

那是早餐。

It was breakfast.

他什么也没说就去煮燕麦粥了，我觉得那意思就是没事。

He goes to make oatmeal without saying anything, which I decide means it's fine.

星期三到了，我注意到两件事。

Wednesday comes, and I notice two things.

第一，那个桶已经不到一半了。

One, the tub is already less than half full.

我买的时候觉得十升挺多的。

10 liters sounded like a lot when I bought it.

我觉得我可能算错了。

I think I may have made a small math error.

第二，数学课并没有变好。

Two, math class is not going better.

如果说有什么变化的话，那就是变得更糟了。

If anything, it is going slightly worse.

Mrs.

问我一个问题，我有一瞬间知道答案，然后我就不知道了。

McDonald asked me a question and I knew the answer for a second, and then I didn't.

我不确定冰淇淋能不能解决分数问题，但我还没打算放弃它。

I'm not sure ice cream can fix fractions, but I'm not ready to give up on it yet.

星期四，妈妈比平时起得早，因为她有个早会，想早点开始一天。

On Thursday, Mummy gets up earlier than usual because she has an early meeting and wanted to get an early start to the day.

这是她说的，不是我说的，但仔细想想，这话其实不太对。

Those are her words, not mine, which, if you think about it, doesn't make sense.

如果你真想早点开始，那为什么不干脆过了午夜就开始呢？

If you really wanted an early start, wouldn't you start right after midnight?

我试过一次。

I tried that once.

结果被告知半夜不能练单簧管，只好回去睡觉。

I was told I couldn't practice my clarinet at midnight and had to go back to bed.

我到现在还觉得那条规矩不公平。

I still think that was an unfair rule.

妈妈倒咖啡之前，先过来看了看我的碗。

Before mommy pours her cup of coffee, she comes over to look in my bowl.

因为我们早上只吃燕麦粥，所以她很惊讶。

Because we only ever have oatmeal in the mornings, and she was surprised.

我觉得她以为我在吃一碗燕麦粥，但我绝不会自愿吃那个。

I think she thought I was eating a bowl of it, which I would never do voluntarily.

那玩意儿太难吃了。

It's yucky.

要是上面加点冰淇淋，可能会好一些。

Maybe if there was ice cream on top, it would be better.

但那是另一个星期要讨论的想法了。

But that's a different idea for a different week.

我看到她的眼睛在碗、我、桶、碗之间来回看。

I can see her eyes go bowl, me, tub, bowl again.

我笑了。

I smile.

她没对我笑。

She does not smile back.

那是冰淇淋吗？

Is that ice cream?

我说这是早餐，这也不算撒谎。

It's breakfast, I say, which is not a fib.

这十升冰淇淋是从哪儿来的？

Where did 10 liters of ice cream come from?

我说是从超市买的，这也不算撒谎。

The supermarket, I say, which is also not a fib.

她坐了下来。

She sits down.

她有个习惯，用两根手指揉额头，通常表示她在认真思考或者有点困惑。

She does this thing where she rubs her forehead with two fingers, which usually means she is thinking very hard or is slightly confused.

可能两者都有。

Probably both.

这种情况持续多久了？

How long has this been going on?

从星期一开始的，我说。

Since Monday, I say.

这周过得真不错。

It's been a really good week.

她又看了看那个桶。

She looks at the tub again.

现在差不多快空了，我本来打算过会儿再提的。

It is almost empty now, which I was going to mention eventually.

她说，我们得谈谈这件事。

We're going to talk about this, she says.

我说，好的。

Okay, I say.

不过她先喝了咖啡，所以我觉得应该没那么严重。

She drinks coffee first, though, so I figure it can't be that serious.

今天，我决定在午餐袋里多装一点东西。

Today, I decide to pack a little extra in my lunch bag.

妈妈通常带得够多，但我最近饿得比平时早，而且我的肚子在数学课和英语课上会咕咕叫，英语课更糟，因为英语课总是有安静的阅读时间，教室里会变得非常安静。

Mommy usually packs enough, but I've been getting hungry earlier than usual and my stomach has been making gurgling noises during math class and during English, which is worse because English always has quiet reading time and the classroom gets very silent.

然后我的肚子发出很大的声音，艾迪每次都笑。

And then my stomach says something very loud and Addy laughs every single time.

所以我一直在想冰淇淋的事，我得出了几个结论。

So I've been thinking about the ice cream situation, and I have made some conclusions.

10升冰淇淋根本不够。

10 liters of ice cream just is not enough.

我算了一下，这很讽刺，因为数学正是我想提高的科目。

I did the math, which is ironic because math is the class I was trying to improve.

问题是10升听起来很多，但它消失得比你想象的要快，尤其是如果你真的很投入这个计划的话。

The problem is that 10 liters sounds like a lot, but it disappears faster than you'd think, especially if you are really committed to the plan.

我可能需要20升才能让它真正有效，但20升比我现在的零花钱要多。

I might need 20 liters for it to be properly effective, but 20 liters is more allowance than I currently have.

而且当我要求更多时，妈妈做了个鬼脸。

And Mommy made a face when I asked for more.

所以现在，这个计划暂时搁置一下。

So for now, the plan is on a bit of a pause.

爸爸喜欢这个词。

Daddy likes that word.

我经常听到他在电话里用这个词。

I hear him using it on the phone all the time.

这个暂停，那个暂停。

Pause this and pause that.

但我并没有放弃早餐吃冰淇淋的想法。

But I have not given up on ice cream for breakfast.

我想说清楚这一点。

I want to be clear about that.

我只是把它挪到了周末，那时候没有数学课要提升，我可以更悠闲地吃，用我最喜欢的碗和好勺子，站在台子旁边，就像我喜欢的那样。

I have simply moved it to the weekends, when there is no math class to improve and I can eat it at a more relaxed pace, in my favorite bowl, and with my good spoon, standing at the counter the way I like.

现在我能看到台子上面了，站在那儿还挺好玩的。

Standing at the counter is fun now that I can see over it.

还有，爸爸好像暗示说，冰淇淋可能更适合在完成某件难事之后作为奖励，而不是在做事之前吃。

Also, daddy sort of suggested that maybe the ice cream works better as a reward after doing something hard rather than as before it.

我觉得这不对，但我愿意先按他的方式试试，因为他给我买了一个新的十升大桶，而且是那种在舌尖上有点麻酥酥感觉的好牌子。

Which I think is wrong, but I am willing to try it his way for a while because he did buy me a new 10 liter tub and it's the good kind that tingles on your tongue.

这周还是会很开心，只是开心的方式不一样了。

This is still going to be a happy week, just a different kind of happy.
