When Red went into Blue's room to see what he was working on, they both sat and went over the information together.

蓝发现的这些东西，真的会是真实的吗？

Was it possible that what Blue discovered was really true?

The next morning, they talked to their mom.

第二天早上，红和蓝一起下了楼——这在他们家地球上可是头一回发生。

The next morning, Red and Blue came downstairs together, something that had just about never happened before in the history of their family on Earth.

平时都是蓝先下来，一副刚跟枕头打过架、输得惨兮兮的样子。

Usually, Blue came down first, looking like he'd fought with his pillow and lost.

然后她二十分钟后才出现，一上来就生气，因为蓝在她手机上放了恶作剧道具。

Then she'd appear twenty minutes later, already angry because he'd left some gag on her phone.

妈妈从台子后抬起头，看看红，又看看蓝，再回头看看红。

Their mother looked up from the counter, looked at Red, looked at Blue, looked back at Red.

好吧，她说。

Okay, she said.

出什么事了？

What happened?

这根本不是在问问题。

It wasn't really a question.

红坐了下来。

Red sat down.

Blue也坐了下来。

Blue sat down.

Red看着Blue，意思是该你说了；Blue看着Red，意思是不，你先说。他们的母亲静静看着这场反复上演的拉锯，仿佛已经看了整整一辈子。

Red looked at Blue, which meant you start, and Blue looked at Red, which meant no, you start, And their mother watched this exchange with the patience of someone who had been watching it her whole life.

Red终于开口了：‘Red planet rising’，这是Blue常去的那个数学论坛上的用户名。

Red planet rising, Red said finally, on Math Minds, the math forum Blue uses.

母亲没说话，只是等着。

Their mother waited.

Their mother didn't move, maybe didn't even blink.

Red walked her through it.

The timing Red Planet Rising posted six minutes before they sent the transmission.

The decoded message, Well done.

他们母亲听完了所有内容，一言不发。

Their mother listened to all of it without saying anything.

她双手捧着茶杯，没喝，只是握着，或许握得有点太紧了。

She had her tea in both hands, not drinking it, just holding it perhaps a bit too tight.

Red讲完后，沉默了好一阵子。

When Red finished, there was a long pause.

他一直在监视那个设施，他们的母亲说。

He's been watching the facility, their mother said.

这不是疑问句。

Not a question.

有一段时间，Blue说，也许是一段很长的时间。

For a while, Blue said, maybe a long while.

Like, we think he might have made it easier for me to get in.

又是一阵沉默。

Another pause.

Longer this time.

红盯着母亲的脸看。

Red watched her mother's face.

她早就练出来了，能看懂母亲刻意隐藏的表情。

She'd gotten good at this, reading the expressions her mother tried not to show.

此刻，她的样子不像真的那么惊讶，好像早有预料。

Right now, she looked like someone who wasn't quite as surprised as maybe she should have been.

你父亲，”母亲缓缓说道，“一向很谨慎。

Your father, their mother said slowly, is very careful.

这算不上直接回答，但至少说了点什么。

Which wasn't really an answer, but it was something.

蓝张开了嘴。

Blue opened his mouth.

别说了，红说。

Don't, Red said.

我要记录在案，”他说，“这事儿我主要都是我解决的。

I want it on record, he said, that I solved most of this.

你是以顾问的身份为我工作的。

You work for me as a consultant.

一个什么活儿都干了的顾问。

A consultant who did basically everything.

去拿你的背包吧，蓝，他们的母亲说，她的语气一出来，谈话就结束了。

Go get your backpack, Blue, their mother said, and her voice had that particular quality that ended conversations.

蓝去拿背包了。

Blue went to get his backpack.

红留在桌边，母亲则一言不发地走到炉子旁。

Red stayed at the table while her mother moved to the stove without saying anything.

蜂蜜蛋糕的香气慢慢弥漫了整个厨房。

The smell of honey cake slowly filled the kitchen.

三十秒后，蓝背着书包出现在门口，闻了一下，没等任何人开口就坐了回去。

Blue reappeared in the doorway thirty seconds later, backpack on, took one sniff, and sat back down without anyone having to ask him.

他妈妈也没对这件事说什么。

Their mother didn't say anything about that either.

他们三个人安静地一起吃早餐，蓝一句烦人的话都没说，这要么是破了纪录，要么说明真的有什么不一样了。

They ate breakfast together, the three of them quietly, without Blue saying anything annoying, which was either a record or a sign that something had genuinely shifted.

今天真是个好日子，”他妈妈说。

It's a good day, their mother said.

上学的一天还行，虽然考虑到之前的事，这感觉有点奇怪，但又好像挺对的。

The school day was fine, which felt a little strange given everything, but also kind of right.

麦卡希尔老师正在讲一个关于莎士比亚的笑话，

Mr.

红觉得她以前好像听过这个。

McCaskill was telling a joke about Shakespeare that Red was pretty sure she'd heard before.

查理正在解释一个关于某件事的新理论。

Charlie was explaining a new theory about something.

她听见了‘自动售货机’、‘统计上不可能’，还有‘作为调查者，我们有责任’这些话。

She caught the words vending machine and statistically impossible and we owe it to ourselves as investigators.

平时她都会凑过去，任由他发挥，因为查理的理论就算全错，至少也挺有意思。

And normally, she would have leaned in and let him run with it, because Charlie's theories were always at least entertaining, even when they were completely wrong.

今天，她只是微笑着，听他说完。

Today, she just smiled and let him talk.

库尔特吃了两份午餐，还顺带吃了部分亚历克莎的。

Kurt ate two lunches and part of Alexa's.

亚历克莎弄了个新表格，没多解释，只是举起来晃了一下，好像显而易见似的，然后继续打字。

Alexa had a new spreadsheet, she didn't bother explaining, just held it up briefly like it was self evident and went back to typing.

蕾切尔读着一本厚得让红都看不见她脸的书。

Rachel read a book so thick Red couldn't see her face behind it.

一切都没变，和往常一样。

Everything exactly as it always was.

Red环顾了一下食堂。

Red looked around the cafeteria.

嘈杂的声音，饭菜的气味，四百个孩子同时吃午饭的混乱场面。

The noise, the smell, the particular chaos of 400 kids trying to eat lunch at the same time.

Charlie还在说个不停，Kurt伸手越过桌子。

Charlie still talking, Kurt reaching across the table.

她想象着第七区四万人各自过着平凡的一天。

She thawed about 40,000 people in Sector 7 going about their day.

她想起了妈妈说今天是个好日子。

She thawed about her mother saying it was a good day.

也许还真是。

Maybe it was.

Red回家时，妈妈的办公室门是开着的。

Mom's office door was open when Red got home.

自从那件事发生以来，那扇门从未开过，一次都没有。

It had never been open, not once, since all of this started.

红在走廊里站了几秒，盯着那间普通的房间——那盏小灯，还有书架上那些伪装得很好的火星文。

Red stood in the hallway for a second just looking at it the ordinary room, the small lamp, the bookshelf with its carefully disguised Martian text.

然后她走了进去。

And then she went in.

她妈妈坐在书桌前。

Her mother was at the desk.

蓝已经坐在地上，背靠着书架，这意味着他早就回家了，而且已经完成了那个固定流程：找个地方坐下，等着看接下来会发生什么。

Blue was already there sitting on the floor with his back against the bookshelf, which meant he'd been home for a while and had already done the thing where he positioned himself somewhere and waited to see what happened next.

有回信了，她妈妈说。

There's a reply, their mother said.

她把平板转过来，让两人都能看见。

She turned the tablet around so they could both see.

这次只是普通的屏幕界面。

Just the regular screen this time.

一条简短而正式的消息，措辞严谨，没有任何多余的内容。

A short, formal message, careful language, nothing extra.

红读了这条信息。

Red read it.

科学监督委员会确认已收到数据。

The Scientific Oversight Council confirmed they had received the data.

独立分析正在进行中。

Independent analysis was underway.

栖息地管理局已通过正式渠道收到通知，现在有记录、有存档，不可能再悄悄抹掉。

The Habitat Authority had been formally notified through official channels, On record now, documented, impossible to quietly make disappear.

第七区的居民将得到通知，并有时间做准备。

Sector 7 residents will be informed and given time to prepare.

它没说所有问题都解决了。

It didn't say everything was fixed.

也没对接下来会发生什么做出任何承诺。

It didn't make any promises about what came next.

措辞谨慎、克制，字字精准，不多不少，刚好说清了意思。

It was careful and measured and said exactly what it meant without saying anything extra.

红又读了一遍。

Red read it twice.

这够了吗？

Is that enough?

她问道。

She asked.

她母亲认真想了想。

Her mother thought about it.

她是真在思考，这一点让红觉得比随便说句安慰话要强得多。

Actually thought about it, which Red appreciated more than a quick reassuring answer would have been.

算是个开始吧，她最终说道。

It's a start, she said finally.

现在该知道的人已经知道了。

The right people know now.

这正是亚瓦需要的。

That's what Yava needed.

这正是我需要的。

That's what I needed.

她停顿了一下。

She paused.

现在有四万人多出了以前没有的时间。

40,000 people have time now that they didn't have before.

这可不是小事。

That's not nothing.

蓝沉默着，这情况太不寻常了，红立刻注意到了。

Blue was quiet, which was still unusual enough that Red noticed it.

那医生呢？

What about Doctor.

红问。

Red asked.

你觉得她还好吗？

Do you think she's okay?

她妈妈说，我觉得亚瓦很会照顾自己，而且我相信她发那条消息时，清楚自己在冒什么险。

I think Yava is very good at taking care of herself, their mother said, and I think she knew what she was risking when she sent that first message.

她合上了平板电脑。

She closed the tablet.

我觉得她会感到欣慰。

I think she'd be pleased.

他们站在那儿停了几秒。

They stood there for a second.

这里感觉没那么紧张了，蓝说。

It smells less stressed in here, Blue said.

她妈妈看着他。

Their mother looked at him.

房间怎么会感到紧张呢。

Rooms don't smell stressed.

但这个房间就是有，蓝说。

This one did, Blue said.

那天晚上，他们的妈妈做了一顿丰盛的晚餐。

Their mother made a nice dinner that night.

她用了橱柜最里头的那些香料，是刚搬来时买的，一闻就让她想起火星的味道。

She used the spices from the back of the cupboard, the special ones she bought when they just arrived that reminded her of the tastes of Mars.

厨房里飘着一股红说不上来但立刻就认得的气味。

The kitchen smelled like something Red couldn't quite name but recognized immediately.

像家的味道。

Like home.

另一个家。

Their other home.

他们一边吃，一边聊着平常的事。

They ate and talked about normal things.

蓝抱怨作业太简单了。

Blue complained about how easy homework was.

红提到了一位叫默里的老师推荐的一本书。

Red mentioned a book Mr.

麦卡斯基尔布置的作业居然还不错，这让她有点意外。

McCaskill had assigned that was actually pretty good, which surprised her.

妈妈问起库尔特的比赛，还有查理有没有成功一整周都把袜子配对好。

Their mother asked about Kurt's tournament and whether Charlie had managed to keep his socks matching for a full week yet.

感觉真好。

It was nice.

就是那种简单纯粹的好。

Just straightforwardly nice.

晚饭后，红在厨房桌上做英语作业，蓝假装写作业，其实偷偷画着些跟作业完全无关的图，这时妈妈的平板在台面上响了起来。

After dinner, Red was doing English at the kitchen table and Blue was pretending to do homework while actually drawing diagrams of something that definitely wasn't homework, when their mother's tablet buzzed on the counter.

她拿起来看了看，放下，又拿起来再看一遍。

She picked it up, read it, put it down, picked it up again.

过来一下，她说。

Come here, she said.

他们走了过去。

They came.

她把平板转了过来。

She turned the tablet around.

是爸爸发来的，不是通过老渠道，也不是通过数学思维平台，更不是什么复杂的方式。

It was from Dad, not through any old channel, not through Math Minds, not through anything complicated.

就是普通的AID通讯。

Just a regular AID communication.

正式的，有监控的，完全合规的。

Official, monitored, completely above board.

那种会被记录、归档，而且有人会认真阅读的类型。

The kind that got logged and filed and read by whoever read these things.

It said: Heard the council is active again.

蓝，我听说你最近在研究一些挺有意思的谜题。

Blue, I hear you've been working on some interesting puzzles lately.

Well done.

蓝看了那条消息。

Blue read it.

再看一遍。

Read it again.

干得不错，他轻声说。

Well done, he said quietly.

对，红回答道。

Yeah, Red said.

妈妈坐在桌边微笑着，那种笑她一向如此——明明事情很难，却又让人欣慰，红渐渐意识到，这其实是她最常有的表情。

Their mother was smiling at the table in the way she did when something was both hard and good at the same time, which Red was starting to recognize as one of her most common expressions, actually.

蓝挺直了身子。

Blue straightened up.

我要正式记录一下，这部分主要是我解出来的。

I want it on record that I solved most of this.

你是在为我工作，Red说，作为顾问。

You work for me, Red said, as a consultant.

一个几乎包揽所有技术活的顾问。

A consultant who did basically everything technical.

Homework, Blue, their mother said.

I'm just saying homework.

Blue又回去画他的图了，那些明显不是作业。

Blue went back to his diagrams, which were definitely not homework.

Red也回去继续看她的英语了。

Red went back to her English.

他们妈妈坐在桌边，捧着茶。

Their mother sat at the table with her tea.

厨房里很安静，但是一种舒服的安静。

The kitchen was quiet in a good way.

红读完书后上了楼，在书桌前坐了一会儿，没开灯。

Red went upstairs after she finished her reading and sat at her desk for a while without turning on her lamp.

外面，整个街区正迎来夜晚的日常节奏。

Outside, the neighborhood was doing its evening thing.

一辆车驶过，不知谁家的狗叫了两声，远处有孩子被喊着回家睡觉。

A car, someone's dog, the distant sound of a kid being called in for bedtime down the street.

这些再普通不过的地球声响，她刚来这儿的头几个月根本没留意，因为满脑子想的都是家乡的声音。

Normal earth sounds that she'd spent the first few months here barely noticing because she was too busy missing the sounds of home.

现在，她终于注意到了。

She noticed them now.

她想起了七区。

She thought about Sector 7.

四万人正和她一样过着寻常的夜晚，却还不知道，在地球的某个角落，一位疲惫的科学家和她的两个孩子，已经埋头干了一周，可能做了一件很重要的事。

40,000 people going about their evenings same as her, not knowing yet that somewhere on Earth, a tired scientist and her two kids had spent a week doing something that might matter.

他们迟早会知道的，不是今晚，也许不是这周，但总有一天，会有人敲门通知大家，情况变了，还有时间做准备。

They'd find out eventually not tonight, maybe not this week but eventually, someone would knock on doors and explain that things were changing and that there was time to prepare.

That someone was paying attention.

这已经不容易了。

That was something.

她想到了博士。

She thought about Doctor.

索林，不管她在哪儿。

Sorin, wherever she was.

她希望她一切安好。

She hoped she was okay.

她想起了那条引发一切的消息，是通过一个本该早已失效的渠道发出来的，发信人冒了很大风险才送出它。

She thought about the message that had started everything, sent through a channel that technically shouldn't exist anymore, by someone who risked a lot to send it.

She hoped it had been worth it.

She thought it probably had.

她想到父亲，此刻正身处AID内部，盯着一个数学论坛，提前给儿子发数学谜题，就怕他哪天用得上。

She thought about her father, somewhere inside the AID right now, monitoring a math forum, sending puzzles to his son before he'd need them.

他总是这样，提前打算，为那些他希望永远别发生的事做好准备。

Planning ahead, the way he always did, for things he hoped would never happen and prepared for anyway.

她想到，想念一个人的时候，居然也会觉得他其实从未真正离开。

She thought about how weird it was to miss someone and also feel like they hadn't entirely gone anywhere.

她想到母亲，这是连续第二晚睡得安稳了。

She thought about her mother sleeping properly for the second night in a row.

她想到Blue，悄悄做了十七张图表，却一个人都没告诉。

She thought about Blue, who had made 17 charts and not told anyone.

这时，她的手机震动了一下。

Then her phone buzzed.

是查理。

Charlie.

好吧。

Okay.

我知道你说过不再有新谜题了，但你先听我说完。

So I know you said no new mysteries, but hear me out.

红抬头看着天花板。

Red looked at the ceiling.

然后她又看了看那条消息。

Then she looked at the message.

可即便如此，她还是笑了出来。

Then, despite everything, she laughed.

她独自在房间里笑出了声，连自己都吓了一跳，因为她根本没料到会这样。

Actually laughed out loud alone in her room, which startled her a little because she hadn't been expecting it.

她回了一句：‘什么事儿啊，查理？’

She typed back, What is it, Charlie?

回复马上就来了。

The reply came immediately.

一张学校新售货机的照片。

A photo of the school's new vending machine.

左下角有个很可疑的凹痕。

A very suspicious dent in the lower left panel.

三个问号，接着第四个，第五个——查理根本不懂什么叫克制。

Three question marks, then a fourth question mark, then a fifth because Charlie didn't really believe in restraint.

然后她打字说：明天跟大家一块儿聊聊这事。

Then she typed, Let's talk about it tomorrow with the gang.

她把手机放在桌上，打开物理笔记本，翻到那一页。

She put the phone down on the desk, opened her physics journal, and found her page.

窗外，整个街区渐渐陷入夜晚的宁静。

Outside, the neighborhood settled into its quiet evening sounds.

楼下冰箱发出低沉的嗡嗡声。

The refrigerator hummed downstairs.

somewhere，蓝肯定又没写作业。

Somewhere, Blue was almost certainly not doing his homework.

一切都在正轨上。

Everything exactly as it should be.

这部分就到这里了。
