Blue and Red met Ada in Summerside when she asked for their help to solve a mystery.
Red and Blue both realized that there was no way she actually needed their help to figure out what was happening.
When Monday comes around, Blue gets a message letting him know what was the result of Ada's watching the halls that morning and a request to meet again.
The Transfer Student Volume three, Part 23 The message came at 04:02 on Monday afternoon.
Blue had been checking for it since 03:35, which was right after he got home and as soon as he could take his laptop out of his bag.
He was at the kitchen table staring at his laptop, pretending to work on a science assignment that didn't actually require any work.
He wasn't sure why he was pretending since everyone in the house knew he was well above most university students, let alone anyone at the school he attended.
The notification ping came in, and he had the message open almost before the sound finished.
The message was from Northern Corridor seventeen and had three short lines.
Six years old.
确认。
Confirmed.
She'd been collecting objects to build a model of a bridge.
She passes it every morning on the way to school.
Twelve days of materials in her backpack.
I found her a better system.
Art Room has a free materials bin.
Problem resolved.
Blue read it a couple of times, then a third, because he was thinking about the last two words and their meaning.
Problem resolved.
Ada had known what the solution was before she'd even asked them.
She'd had enough information by Sunday to figure it out herself.
She didn't need their help at all.
He typed back, Good work, efficient resolution.
He changed his mind, deleted that and typed, Nice work.
And he sent it before he could change it again.
He wasn't sure why he was so concerned with what he said to her.
Red appeared from the hallway, home from school on her bus which had a much longer route than Blue's.
She hadn't taken her coat off, and she was bringing the cold from outside in with her.
She dropped her bag by the kitchen door, which their mother had asked her not to do approximately 400 times.
Was that her?
对。
Yes.
So what happened?
Six year old was building a model of the bridge.
Ada sorted it all out.
Red pulled out a chair.
She could have done that without meeting us.
I know.
She knew that too.
Yes?
Red
Red looked at him.
So what did she actually want?
Considering we aren't really supposed to seek each other out, Blue said, she wouldn't risk contacting me without a good reason.
Blue
Blue's laptop pinged again.
There was another message from Ada.
Can we meet Saturday?
I want to show you the notebook properly.
Blue turned the laptop so Red could see.
Red read it.
The notebook.
That's why she really contacted you, she said.
Blue typed back, Saturday works.
Can you come to us?
There's a nice bakery we can meet at if you can get a drive or take the bus.
It stops nearby.
Ada agreed.
This time they didn't need their mother, which Blue felt was an improvement in operational independence.
Ada could get the bus from Summerside Blue and Red could walk.
The bakery was ten minutes from their house, which Blue had measured once while trying to determine the fastest route to something worth eating.
He spent most of the week thinking about the notebook.
Well, more daydreaming than any deep thought, which was unusual.
Blue was quite disciplined with where he focused his mental energy.
Red caught him doing it twice and she didn't bug him about it, which meant she was likely saving it for ammunition for a later argument.
She did that well, filing away information for later use.
Saturday finally arrived, and Ada was already at the cafe when they got there, which Blue was starting to think was just how Ada operated get there early and surveil the area.
She was sitting at a small table near the window with her notebook open and a drink in front of her something with steam rising from it.
Blue couldn't tell what.
The bakery smelled like butter and something with cinnamon in it, which Blue thought was one of the better things Earth had produced.
Cinnamon, not butter.
Blue had nothing against butter, but Red seemed adverse to it, so they didn't have any in their house.
Luckily, a glass case near the counter held approximately 14 things worth investigating.
Red went straight to the counter.
Blue followed, because the notebook would still be there in four minutes, and the cinnamon thing might not be.
There is nothing worse than the disappointment of missing out on a delicious thing at the cafe.
What are those?
Blue asked the woman behind the counter, pointing at a tray of small round cookies with something dark pressed into the center.
Molasses cookies she said just came out.
Blue
Blue ordered two, then looked at the tray again.
三块。
Three.
He turned around.
Ada
Ada had come up behind him apparently for the same reason.
Those ones?
She said looking at the molasses cookies.
是的。
Yes.
Ada ordered two without further discussion and went back to the table.
Blue took his cookies and his hot chocolate and sat down across from Ada.
Red took the chair beside him.
Blue acknowledged the lack of symmetry between how they sat.
The lack of balance bothered him, but he let it go.
Ada pushed her cup to the side and opened the notebook on the table.
Ada opened it to the back section without preamble.
The pages looked worked over, lines redrawn, margins crowded with annotations, some marks in a medium blue recognized from home.
She'd been at this for a long time.
She turned it so they could both see.
My mother was a maintenance engineer, Ada said.
Atmospheric systems.
I grew up watching her work on the habitat processors, the ones that managed air pressure and composition underground.
She paused to take a small bite of cookie.
I started drawing my own versions when I was eight modifications things I thought could be more efficient.
Did they work?
Blue asked.
I don't know.
I never had real data to test them against.
She turned to a specific page near the middle, cleaner than the others, redrawn until it was right.
This is the current version.
The design holds in theory The calculations are consistent.
Her finger stopped at a section in the lower right corner.
Except here.
This pressure differential calculation needs real atmospheric data from Mars.
Earth numbers don't translate.
The composition is too different.
Red
Red said, What does the design actually do?
Ada
Ada looked at her.
It's a more efficient atmospheric processor, the kind that keeps the air breathable in the habitats.
The bakery had filled up a little since they'd arrived.
Someone at the counter was having a long conversation about something that wasn't about ordering anything.
No one showed any interest in what they were talking about.
Blue looked at the notebook, the calculation, the gap where the Mars data should go.
He'd seen that gap before, from the other side.
I think I might have what you need, he said.
Blue took a breath.
Last year, he said, our mother received a message from a colleague still on Mars a scientist.
The message contained atmospheric readings from one of the older residential habitats.
The readings showed the processors were failing.
Not immediately, not catastrophically, but on a trajectory that wasn't good.
Ada put her cookie down and didn't say anything, which meant keep going.
The official reports said everything was fine, Blue continued.
Someone had altered the data before it went public.
Our mother couldn't verify the readings because she couldn't access independent atmospheric data from Mars through any channel that hadn't been touched.
But you could, Ada said.
There's a facility, Blue said, Old Martian Construction independent monitoring systems that predate the lottery program, predate the AID, predate any of the official channels that might have been compromised.
I accessed the data through those systems.
You accessed an old Martian facility, Ada said.
Not quite a question.
是的?
Yes?
How?
Well, carefully, Blue said, not wanting to tell the whole story.
And then we transmitted the verified data to the Scientific Oversight Council through the facility's own transmission system.
The council notified the habitat authority.
Sector 7 residents were informed and given time to prepare.
Ada was quiet for what felt like a long time, but was probably fifteen seconds.
Sector 7, she said.
Yes?
That's where the readings were from, the failing processors.
对。
Yes.
Ada looked at her notebook, then at Blue.
And you kept the raw data?
Blue reached into his bag and produced his laptop without saying anything.
He opened it, navigated to a folder, and turned the screen so Ada could see.
Columns of numbers.
Time stamps going back farther than Soren's processed readings had.
Unaltered, unprocessed, straight from the facility's own monitors.
Ada looked at the screen for a long time.
Then she opened her notebook to the page with the pressure differential calculation and set it next to the laptop.
She looked at both of them together.
This is what I needed, she said quietly.
This is exactly what I needed.
Ada looked up.
I didn't know it was Sector 7.
I just knew something was wrong.
Red leaned forward.
Did your mother know too?
Ada turned her cookie over in her hands like she was examining it.
Not specifically, but my mother has been receiving fragments through quiet channels for months not organized information, more like pieces of the same rumor arriving from different directions.
Something was changing in the habitat systems.
Something wasn't being reported accurately.
What did she do with it?
Blue asked.
Nothing, Ada said.
She's a maintenance engineer, not a scientist.
She knows how systems work but not how to navigate what happens when the systems are being deliberately misrepresented.
She didn't know who to tell or whether telling anyone would make things better or worse.
Red thought about their own mother, spending three weeks not sleeping, losing weight, running encrypted transmissions at midnight.
At least their mother had known what to do eventually, even if it took a while.
The notebook, Blue said, was that connected to what your mother was hearing?
Partly, I'd been working on the processor design since before we left Mars.
It was just something I did.
But after my mother started receiving the fragments, I worked harder.
She looked at the notebook.
I thought if I could design something better, something more efficient, it might matter eventually, even if I didn't know where or how.
It matters right now, Red said.
Ada
Ada took a small bite of her cookie and put it down on her plate.
We should tell our mothers, Blue said.
Both of them, Red said.
Ada
Ada looked at her notebook.
My mother doesn't know how far I've taken this.
Blue
Our mother already knows about you, Blue said.
I told her when she drove us to Summerside.
Red looked at him.
How much did you tell her?
That I'd reconnected with someone from the transit base through a math forum and that she went to Greenfield Elementary.
She didn't ask more than that.
Which means she's been waiting for you to tell her the rest, Red said.
Blue picked up his last cookie.
Probably.
So we tell them, Ada said.
Not a question.
We tell them, Blue agreed.
They stayed until the bakery started filling up with the lunch crowd, which gave them about twenty more minutes before the noise made it hard to think.
Blue closed his laptop.
Ada closed her notebook.
Red finished her hot chocolate and looked at the table like she was checking they hadn't forgotten anything.
How do we do this?
Ada asked, telling them.
Carefully, Blue said.
You always say that.
It's always true.
Red looked at them both.
Ada talks to her mother first.
We talk to ours.
Then both mothers talk to each other.
That's the right order.
Ada thought about it.
My mother is going to ask how far I've taken the notebook.
What will you tell her?
The truth, Ada said, like this was obvious, which for Ada it probably was.
Blue nodded.
Same.
Outside, someone tried to parallel park three times and then just laughed, which Blue found quietly unsatisfying.
There's one more thing, Ada said.
Blue looked at her.
The data you have, the facility data?
Ada opened her notebook to the pressure differential page one more time, looked at it, closed it again.
If I can complete this calculation, if the design actually holds with real numbers behind it, it's not a fix.
We're eleven and twelve.
We can't rebuild habitat processors from here.
No, Blue agreed.
But it could be something the right people use, the council or whoever is actually working on Sector 7 now.
It could be, Blue said, so we'd need to get it to them.
Through the same channel we used before, Blue said, the facility's transmission system.
Ada
Ada looked at him.
You still have access?
Blue
Blue picked up the last piece of his third molasses cookie.
Probably, he said.
Red
Red looked at the ceiling briefly.
Of course you do.
Ada's bus was in twelve minutes.
They walked her to the stop together, which nobody suggested, and everyone just did.
And that is the end of this part.
Good night.
Sleep Tight.
