Speaker 0

My name is Kit Kit, and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.

Speaker 0

Thanksgiving is coming soon in Canada, so we would like to share a story about a Thanksgiving meal.

Speaker 0

Maggie has traveled to her grandparents' house for Thanksgiving, and the house is very full with yummy smells and way too many people.

Speaker 0

She has brought her stuffies and is wondering where they are going to eat when she sees there is definitely no room at the table.

Speaker 0

Who ate the stuffies dinner?

Speaker 0

It was Thanksgiving Sunday, and grandma and grandpa's farmhouse smelled yummy and was a bit loud and so full of people that Maggie had already been stepped on twice, once by Uncle Jack and once by her cousin Theo.

Speaker 0

He was only four, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but her toes thought it was.

Speaker 0

The kitchen smelled especially yummy because it smelled like turkey and special spices you only smelled this time of year.

Speaker 0

With all the pots boiling, the windows became so steamed up you couldn't see the potato fields anymore, which was okay because then Maggie could draw happy faces on the windows.

Speaker 0

And she tried a pumpkin, but it just looked like the faces.

Speaker 0

She also tried to draw Bun, her rabbit, but he came out looking like a potato with ears.

Speaker 0

Drawing on the window was hard, but grandma said it looked nice.

Speaker 0

She had brought her stuffed friends with her, Bun, Mr.

Speaker 0

Rex, Lulu, and Pickle, and they were lined up on the bench by the back door so they wouldn't get stepped on too.

Speaker 0

They'd come all the way over the bridge in the back seat, and nobody had asked them if they were hungry or if maybe they wanted some dinner too.

Speaker 0

Not one person, and they had been quiet the whole time for the most part, except when Bun and Pickle argued about something silly.

Speaker 0

Grandma, Maggie said, why can't stuffies have Thanksgiving too?

Speaker 0

Grandma was peeling potatoes, about a 100 of them or maybe a thousand, because it was a lot.

Speaker 0

She put the peeler down, and it looked like she was thinking hard because her wrinkled forehead wrinkled more.

Speaker 0

This was what grandma always did, pause when Maggie asked questions.

Speaker 0

I don't know why not, grandma replied.

Speaker 0

Then there was a scratching noise inside the kitchen wall, right behind the bench.

Speaker 0

Scritch, scritch.

Speaker 0

Maggie could hear it, then nothing.

Speaker 0

What's that?

Speaker 0

Grandpa came in with an armload of wood and his boots still on, which grandma gave him a serious look about.

Speaker 0

He dumped the wood by the stove and listened.

Speaker 0

How settling, he said.

Speaker 0

This old place is a hundred and twenty odd years old, so it's allowed to make a few noises.

Speaker 0

She has earned it.

Speaker 0

Maggie went and put her ear against the wall anyway and kept it there until mom needed the bench for the coats.

Speaker 0

Now the stuffies had nowhere to sit, and there was no room at the big table either.

Speaker 0

Maggie had counted.

Speaker 0

14 people, and Uncle Jack was getting the piano bench.

Speaker 0

Grandma, she said, if stuffies can have Thanksgiving, where do they have it?

Speaker 0

Grandma wiped her hands on the apron and thought about it, the same way she thought about the first question, just with less wrinkles this time.

Speaker 0

Grandma said the stuffies could have the little room under the front stairs at the end of the hall as long as nobody touched the pickles.

Speaker 0

Grandma kept about 40 jars of them in there.

Speaker 0

Maggie sat pickle with his back to the shelves just in case.

Speaker 0

He was known to be naughty.

Speaker 0

The little room ceiling was slanty, and there was one light bulb with a string you had to pull.

Speaker 0

There were spider webs, which Maggie liked, except when they had flies in them or got stuck in her hair.

Speaker 0

It smelled like potatoes and grandpa's boots.

Speaker 0

Maggie could stand up straight in it, almost.

Speaker 0

Grown ups had to bend way, way over, which meant it might be a good dining room for the stuffies.

Speaker 0

Grandpa found an old milk crate he used for tools or something and turned it upside down for a table.

Speaker 0

Grandma gave her a tea towel with lighthouses on it.

Speaker 0

For plates, Maggie used the gold lids from some canning jars, and Grandma's thimbles from the sewing tin were cups, even though one had a hole in it.

Speaker 0

Mr.

Speaker 0

Rex got the end of the table because he was the biggest, and also he was sort of the grandpa.

Speaker 0

Lulu couldn't really sit because she was a whale, so she lay on her side, which is allowed for whales but not allowed for kids.

Speaker 0

Bun went next to Pickle, but nobody knew what Pickle ate.

Speaker 0

Even though Maggie had decided once that it was buttons, But she wasn't sure anymore.

Speaker 0

Okay, she told them, no elbows on the table.

Speaker 0

And Mr.

Speaker 0

Rex, only indoor roars are allowed.

Speaker 0

She demonstrated what an indoor roar was.

Speaker 0

It was small and a little more quiet.

Speaker 0

It's important not to scare people.

Speaker 0

Theo stuck his head in the door and roared a giant outdoor roar right back, and mom called Theo from the kitchen, and he left.

Speaker 0

Then admiral came in.

Speaker 0

Admiral was grandma and grandpa's cat, and he was orange and enormous, almost the size of a tiger, though Maggie hadn't seen one live yet.

Speaker 0

Admiral walked like he owned the house and let everyone else visit.

Speaker 0

Grandpa said back in the day, Admiral was the best mouser in all of Prince Edward Island.

Speaker 0

There was a picture on the fridge to prove it, but it was from before Maggie was born.

Speaker 0

No one remembered why he got his name.

Speaker 0

You're in charge, Maggie told him.

Speaker 0

Nobody eats until grandma brings the dinner.

Speaker 0

Admiral turned around twice on a sack of potatoes and lay down, which could mean he agreed.

Speaker 0

When the turkey came out of the oven, everyone crowded into the kitchen to look at it.

Speaker 0

Maggie guessed it looked super yummy because there were too many people for her to get a good look, and no one offered to put her on their shoulders.

Speaker 0

So she went back to keep the stuffies company.

Speaker 0

While the turkey cooled, Grandma came along the hall from the kitchen with a pie plate and a tea towel over it, the same way she carried the real pies.

Speaker 0

She had to get down on one knee to fit through the door.

Speaker 0

She said, oh.

Speaker 0

Then she took the towel off.

Speaker 0

There was a turkey wing on a saucer for mister Rex because he was at the end, and the end is where the carver sits.

Speaker 0

Mister Rex had little arms, though, so Maggie held the butter knife for him.

Speaker 0

There was a scoop of mashed potatoes about the size of a marble with butter melting on top and a crust of grandma's bread torn into four pieces.

Speaker 0

And a pumpkin pie, a real one baked in a muffin tin with fork marks around the edge.

Speaker 0

You made them a pie, Maggie said.

Speaker 0

Well, it's Thanksgiving, said Grandma.

Speaker 0

The last thing was a spoonful of cranberry sauce, the jiggly kind with the lines from the can still on it.

Speaker 0

Maggie didn't know who would want that, so she gave it to pickle.

Speaker 0

Nobody knew what pickle ate anyway.

Speaker 0

Grandma got up, holding onto the shelf.

Speaker 0

Wash your hands, she said ten minutes.

Speaker 0

Maggie washed her hands.

Speaker 0

Mostly.

Speaker 0

She counted to thirty as fast as she possibly could, which was super fast, and squeezed in at the big table between Mom and Uncle Jack.

Speaker 0

The table had the extra piece in it, and it still wasn't long enough.

Speaker 0

Somebody's elbow was always in somebody else's way.

Speaker 0

Theo was sitting on a cushion on top of the phone book, and Grandpa told everyone to hurry and get started because the gravy was starting to get a skin on it.

Speaker 0

Uncle Jack was on the piano bench, which was lower than the chairs, so his chin was almost at the table.

Speaker 0

He picked up his napkin and folded it.

Speaker 0

Corner, corner, roll, tuck.

Speaker 0

He made a rabbit with ears.

Speaker 0

He made it hop across the tablecloth and stop beside Maggie's plate and sniff her potatoes.

Speaker 0

Do it again, she said.

Speaker 0

He did it three more times.

Speaker 0

Theo tried and made something that looked like a sock.

Speaker 0

Then Grandpa tapped his glass with his fork.

Speaker 0

Every year, everybody had to say what they were thankful for, going around the table.

Speaker 0

And every year, grandpa started with grandma, and grandma rolled her eyes at him.

Speaker 0

Maggie started working on her speech right away.

Speaker 0

Her first idea was admiral, but admiral was asleep and wouldn't even know.

Speaker 0

So she switched to grandma's pie.

Speaker 0

The pie hadn't come out yet, so it was kind of a guess, but a good guess because all her pies were good before.

Speaker 0

She kept her idea ready.

Speaker 0

She was still keeping it ready when it got to Theo.

Speaker 0

Grandma's pie, Theo said.

Speaker 0

That was hers.

Speaker 0

She had been saving it.

Speaker 0

Now everybody was looking at her.

Speaker 0

Uncle Jack's rabbit was looking at her, too.

Speaker 0

Gravy, Maggie said.

Speaker 0

Grandpa said, good one, and passed her the gravy boat so she had some more.

Speaker 0

When Grandma carried the pumpkin pie in, Theo stood up on the phone book and clapped because it was his thankful thing, and now here it was.

Speaker 0

It had fork marks all around the edge, which made it look pretty but didn't really affect the taste.

Speaker 0

Then Maggie remembered.

Speaker 0

The stuffies!

Speaker 0

她说。

She said.

Speaker 0

Grandma, I forgot the stuffies.

Speaker 0

They've been sitting there the whole entire dinner and nobody even checked on them.

Speaker 0

Well, go see, said mom.

Speaker 0

But first Maggie had to explain it to Uncle Jack who didn't know about the room under the stairs and then to Theo who kept saying, What stuffies?

Speaker 0

By the time she'd finished, grandpa was already pushing his chair back.

Speaker 0

I want to see this, he said.

Speaker 0

So everybody went.

Speaker 0

14 people went down the hall with Maggie in front, and Uncle Jack still had the napkin rabbit in his hand.

Speaker 0

The grown ups couldn't all fit, so they bunched up in the doorway and out into the hall.

Speaker 0

Grandpa got down on his knees with a groan and pulled the light string.

Speaker 0

The stuffies were sitting exactly where Maggie had left them.

Speaker 0

Mr.

Speaker 0

Rex at the end, Lulu on her side, Bun next to Pickle.

Speaker 0

But their dinner was gone.

Speaker 0

The turkey wing was picked so clean, it was just a bone.

Speaker 0

The marble of mashed potatoes was gone.

Speaker 0

The bread crust had bites out of it, tiny ones all along the edge.

Speaker 0

The muffin tin pie had been eaten all the way around, and only the middle was left.

Speaker 0

The only thing nobody had touched was pickles cranberry sauce.

Speaker 0

See, Maggie said nobody likes it.

Speaker 0

I like it, said grandma.

Speaker 0

Then everybody started looking at everybody.

Speaker 0

Mister Rex was the closest to the turkey, but his arms were way too short, and Maggie had held the knife for him herself.

Speaker 0

So it wasn't him.

Speaker 0

Admiral was still on the potato sack, curled up so tight you couldn't find his face.

Speaker 0

Maggie checked his whiskers.

Speaker 0

No crumbs.

Speaker 0

No potato.

Speaker 0

He didn't even wake up.

Speaker 0

Then she looked at Theo.

Speaker 0

I didn't, said Theo.

Speaker 0

I was at the table the whole time.

Speaker 0

Ask the phone book.

Speaker 0

Then she looked at Uncle Jack, mostly at the napkin rabbit.

Speaker 0

That rabbit was hopping all over the place, Maggie said.

Speaker 0

He was the only one.

Speaker 0

Uncle Jack held the rabbit up and looked at it very seriously.

Speaker 0

Did you do this?

Speaker 0

He asked it.

Speaker 0

The rabbit didn't say anything, but it didn't say no either.

Speaker 0

Then something scratched.

Speaker 0

Scritch.

Speaker 0

Scritch.

Speaker 0

It was the same sound from the kitchen wall.

Speaker 0

Everybody went quiet, even Theo.

Speaker 0

The tea towel twitched.

Speaker 0

A mouse came out from under the milk crate, a little gray one with a pink tail.

Speaker 0

It ran right past grandpa's knee and under the pickle shelf, And then it was gone.

Speaker 0

Theo screamed and grabbed Uncle Jack's leg.

Speaker 0

There's another one, said Mom.

Speaker 0

There was.

Speaker 0

It had been hiding behind Pickle the whole time.

Speaker 0

When Maggie picked Pickle up, the mouse just sat there blinking at her with pie crumbs on its nose.

Speaker 0

Then it went under the shelf too.

Speaker 0

And there was a tail sticking out from under Bun's floppy ear.

Speaker 0

Maggie lifted the ear very slowly.

Speaker 0

The third mouse was so small it could have fit in one of the thimbles.

Speaker 0

It zipped off after the others.

Speaker 0

Uncle Jack patted the napkin rabbit and told it sorry.

Speaker 0

Get Admiral, someone shouted.

Speaker 0

Everyone turned to the potato sack.

Speaker 0

Admiral opened one eye.

Speaker 0

He looked at the pickle shelf where the mice had gone.

Speaker 0

Then he closed the eye again and tucked his nose under his tail.

Speaker 0

Admiral, said Theo.

Speaker 0

Leave him be, said Grandpa.

Speaker 0

He's retired.

Speaker 0

Maggie looked at grandpa.

Speaker 0

Grandpa looked at the wall where the scratching had started up again.

Speaker 0

House settling, Maggie said.

Speaker 0

Grandpa laughed so hard he had to sit all the way down on the floor.

Speaker 0

We'll get some traps at the co op, said mom, first thing Tuesday.

Speaker 0

Grandpa wiped his eyes.

Speaker 0

He was still on the floor with his back against the pickle shelf.

Speaker 0

No traps, he said.

Speaker 0

Dad, said mom.

Speaker 0

Why can't a mouse have Thanksgiving too?

Speaker 0

Said grandpa.

Speaker 0

Maggie knew that question.

Speaker 0

It was hers.

Speaker 0

She had asked it that morning in the kitchen, only about stuffies, and grandpa had come in right after with the wood.

Speaker 0

So he must have heard her, even with all that stomping.

Speaker 0

She thought about telling him it was hers first, but he looked like he really liked it, so she let him have it.

Speaker 0

Grandma bent down and looked at what was left of the stuffies dinner.

Speaker 0
