So settle back and enjoy another afternoon of snooker.
What a shot.
This is so special.
Brilliant.
Fantastic.
And that'll put a little spring in a step.
He's done it.
This is snooker club.
This is snooker club,
the World Snooker Tour official podcast.
Well, that went quickly.
The summer break is over already, and the twenty twenty six, twenty seven World Snooker Tour season is underway.
After Wu Yeezer's Crucible heroics, we're officially back for season four.
My name is Mark Watson, and I'm joined by Stephen Hendry and Steven Hallworth.
And if there's one thing that gets me in the mood, it's a new snooker season and a first ever hole in one.
The players have had their rest, but now it's time to see who has been grafting this summer and who has spent too much time on the beach.
I can't wait for this one with the Shanghai masters up first in a blockbuster season opener.
You're listening to Snooker Club.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I was gonna ask how people have been spending the break, but in your case, Hallworth, you've basically you've never stopped playing snooker.
It feels that way.
Pretty much.
对。
Yeah.
We obviously, I worked on the the the world championships for the first time, and I I couldn't believe how intense that that actually was.
So, I was absolutely shattered after that.
So, we we sort of shot away for ten days or so on holiday and then, the second we got back, it was like, wow, the season's like here in a few weeks time, so I better get the queue back out and start going again.
So yeah, it's pretty, it's pretty, the season doesn't really end anymore, it feels.
No, it feels like ten minutes ago we were at the Crucible, but in your case, it's been time well spent.
You've already qualified, as you say, for Wuhan.
Yeah, I started well.
Felt good, actually.
It was I put a lot of hard work in, you know, doing a lot of things away from the actual practice table as well to try and improve things, you know, just those marginal gains.
Yeah, hit the ground running, really pleased.
Had a couple of good wins in the Wuhan as well, so it was it was probably probably my two best wins actually as as a as a pro so far.
Steven, did you find that, obviously, there's a lot of snooker at Sheffield watched, as as you know.
Did you find did you do you learn anything from any of that or or and and that kind of, like, inspires you to get on with the next season?
对。
Yeah.
Massively.
It's funny.
I've been, commentating with Phil Yates and Dave Hendry at the championship league this last week, and he actually asked me the same thing, Phil.
Does commentating help?
And I genuinely have felt that it has done because, you know, last season I was obviously on well, the season before last, I was on the amateur circuit and, like, trying to climb the ranks now.
Commentating on, like, top class snooker.
Don't mean, like, the the the the rubbish stuff that we we can see every now and then.
But I mean, when the top players are playing, it keeps me in touch with that sort of standard.
And you sort of look at them and you you you've got a rough idea and you pretty much know all the shots, but every once in a while, they throw out a a few little scenarios where you think, wow, that's just so clever.
And, you know,
you you do pick up things like that.
And also, you got to work with me in some bad matches and you learn how little work I actually do when I'm commentating.
Well, less less is more.
Less is more.
Learn from the best.
没错。
Exactly.
对。
Yeah.
Stephen Hendry, have you managed to by contrast, have you managed to avoid snooker altogether, basically, since we last spoke?
I I have tried my hardest.
是的
Yeah.
I've been I've been a hub in Portugal on holiday, filmed big break, new series of big break with Padme Guinness.
Did 20 episodes in five days, so they were long days.
Wow.
But it was great fun.
And, you know, thanks to all the players that actually did want to do it.
There was a lot that didn't for different reasons.
Oh, really?
But, yeah, there was you know, it was it was was great fun, and I can't wait for everyone to see it.
And then, yeah, obviously, a bit of golf thrown in.
Hole in one, as I mentioned, my first one last week.
是的。
Yes.
So talk us through that.
The second hole of the new course, 9 Iron.
There was a bit of a sort of a of a dip in the greens.
I didn't actually see it go in.
So me and the guy I was playing with sort of walked up and seen his ball, they were, where's mine?
He was actually more excited than me.
I mean, typical me.
It was just like, you know, you know, miserable Do you know what mean?
So we walked up and then in the hole, it was like, oh my god.
Got a hole in one.
Cost cost me a few quid in the bar afterwards.
But, yeah,
it was great great to do it.
I've got to ask, are you sure it was your ball, Steven, given that you didn't actually see it going to hole?
是的。
Yeah.
Well, yeah, that that we we did we did think yeah.
But def definitely was mine.
没错。
Yeah.
Definitely was mine.
It's not like Donald Trump where someone puts it in for him or something.
I know.
So now just go do the nine darter.
I was gonna say that.
对。
Yes.
So just the nine darter.
And and you and Murphy can have it out.
You're two thirds away
to to supporting immortality.
New season is upon us.
I'm gonna ask you straight away to plunge in the deep end with some predictions So for the new first of all, I know I mean, obviously, we've picked fantasy snooker teams.
We'll come on to that.
But most ranking titles of the season, if this had been last season, it would have been extremely hard to predict because they were spread between so many players.
Maybe it'd be like that again.
What do we think?
I tend to think Sintong will will will will will dominate this season.
I think he's got the monkey off his back, certainly for the start of the season being defended world champion.
And I think he'll just just just chill out, and I think I think I think I think, be fair, him and Wu Yizo will have will have big seasons.
Wu Yizo might start off a little bit slowly with a world champion expectations, but I think Zhin Tong will have a very big season.
Yeah, I've gone Xin Tong as well.
Only because I think now he has got that sort of, you know, that little bit of pressure that might have been on his shoulders last year as the world champion.
That that's sort of been dispelled now.
But if you think back to last year, he started slow, but then he finished the season unbelievably well.
Without a doubt, the star performer of last year, obviously, he landed the Players' Series Grand Slam, didn't he?
Both for a good performance from Shaun in Sheffield, it would have been, you know, it could potentially have been the Crucible Curse defeated.
So I think Zingtong's going to go well.
I think, you know, he's obviously one of the best players on planet Earth, one of the most naturally gifted planet Earth.
And yeah, he's going to show us all what he can do again, I think.
好的。
Okay.
I suppose I'll Well, I'm going to predict that Judd wins the most titles largely because if everyone goes to diving time, it's gonna be boring.
But also, Trump had a strange sort of season.
Was playing well, but didn't really actually bring home many trophies.
And I I just feel like one of these seasons, he's gonna go nuts.
Well, world number one at the end of the season, this is almost the same question, isn't it?
Presumably, everyone fancies a guy to be to be up there when it's all over.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, obviously, Judd's got you correct me if I'm wrong, Steven, half a million points coming off because of the Saudi.
Oh, yeah.
Two years ago.
So that that that's that, you know, will definitely definitely affect him.
So, yeah, I mean, it's it's as long as Judd's as he as he did even last year, you know, he wasn't a prolific the prolific winner that we've seen, but he was still up there almost every other tournament, either be it semis, finals, whatever.
So so it'll be I mean, it would take some season from I think, to overtake Judd.
You know, we're presuming that Judd's gonna have a poor season for Zhengtong to do that.
So as I say, as you as you know, I don't really pay that much attention to the actual logistics or rankings and things like that.
I just watch and and and give my opinions.
You you barely even watch sometimes.
是的。
Yeah.
So yeah.
But I I think Judd will probably still be there at the end of the season, but maybe the season after, then then we might see a difference.
对。
Yeah.
I'm just looking at the rankings now, actually.
如果
And if
you take off that 500,000 See, there you go.
专业。
Professional.
对。
Yeah.
我是个
I'm a
check professional.
That goes not on the golf course.
I'm curious to to sort of see how tight it is.
If you take off the 500,000, he actually is third in the world rankings at the minute.
Neil Robertson would be number one.
是的。
Yeah.
But Zingtong is hot on the heels of him and and there's four players sat on over a million pound now.
So, yeah, I think of the two, I think Zingtong might just pip him come the end of the season, But he's going to respond, isn't he?
He's not just going to lie over and let that mantle disappear.
He's going be there or thereabouts.
But I think it's going to be a good battle between the four of them now because they're all well clear.
是的。
Yeah.
I should mention Neil Robertson because he'll he'll be messaging us if we don't.
You know, he messaged me with my top 16 players of the Crucible era.
He'd messaged me straight away about that.
So, yeah, I mean, but the thing is, Neil, after after Saudi, didn't didn't really do anything in terms of winning.
So he he needs to get back to if he gets back to winning ways, then obviously, he's in there with a shout.
是的
Yeah.
It's all about winning one, like, a big, big event as well.
明白。
Know.
Look.
I've never won a big event.
Event.
So it's rich win for me.
You can imagine it's all very well winning one.
Yeah, it's great.
It's my mind.
But to be at the top of the rankings, you've got be a consistent winner.
And that's the bottom line.
You've got to win multiple tournaments and you've got to keep backing up year on year.
And, and, you know, Neil obviously scooped the big one, but then he went missing.
And that's fact.
There has been this slight suspicion that if you win big that early in the season, like that much money, it can sort of blow you off focus
是的。
Yeah.
For a little bit.
We've seen it.
Cigar cigar time, cigar and beach time.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, you wouldn't enter another tournament, would you, Stephen, if you were?
Absolutely.
Maiden Triple Crown event winner.
More interesting one to predict this maybe.
Well, I've just gone straight in and I don't think anyone will.
I don't think there'll be a new triple crown winner.
Interesting.
I've studied the rankings and the players that I think are going to, you know, threaten in big tournaments.
And I just can't see past people that have already won big ones before at the minute.
I think give a couple of years and that that a new a new flock of players might just be sort of touching that, but at the minute, I just can't see past people that have won it.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, the masses, you can pretty much discount because it's a top 16 anyway.
Supposed to actually, yeah.
You're only looking at two tournaments.
But but I I think you're only looking at The UK.
I think the world's you wouldn't have a maiden winner.
是的。
Yeah.
Very, very, very rarely.
So you're looking at The UK and who could come through.
I mean, could Jack find a new level?
And and Well, that's one obvious place to to go with it,
isn't it?
Because you just
never know with Jack and you like you say.
没错。
Exactly.
So unpredictable.
So unpredictable.
I mean, he's he's, know, seems to be either brilliant or or or or way off that.
Someone like Changbin Yu, does he find another level this season?
He seems to have stepped up the the two seasons he's been back.
I was gonna suggest Bingyu.
If I will, I'll stick Chang Bingyu in there because he is definitely a player that could do it on the day.
It's just, as you say,
you're looking at you you are looking at someone to have a very, very good streak in a specific tournament.
Someone like a Hawkins, gonna Hawkins.
Yeah, he
was the that, if I was going to pick, it would be Barry, yeah.
Because obviously he got to the final of The UK recently, didn't he?
And, you know, he's got all three on his CV, but he's never quite managed to get one.
It's like
I actually want Barry to win one, to be honest.
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
There'll be one episode
You're right.
I do.
There'll be one episode of this podcast where we talk about how close is Barry to winning a triple crown.
That's come up every series so far.
Maybe not.
Maybe this is the one where he does do it.
As you say, he's always agonizingly close.
But basically, we're fairly we're cynical about the or skeptical about the the prospect of a maiden triple crown.
We're the breakout player of the season.
So you can define that how you want, I suppose.
But someone we're gonna be talking about a lot more than we did last year.
Well, I've got a little bit of recency bias here because I've been commenting on the championship league and I've picked out a player that has impressed me a lot through the qualifiers and particularly in booking his place into the finals day of Championship League, that's Dylan Emery from Wales.
Young young Welsh player.
He's been on and off the tour for the last couple of seasons, but I don't think I've ever seen as complete a performance as the one he put in the other day to book his place in the finals group.
He absolutely destroyed Stan Moody, who's obviously a player that people are talking a lot about.
And I know it's quite a small sample because they're short matches in the Championship League.
They're the best of four games.
But to produce that level, there's got to be something in there.
And he's had a good start to the season.
He's on a second year of a tour guide.
I think he's going to have a big year this year.
Dylan Emery, that's the name to make.
We'll bookmark that prediction.
Yeah, I'm going to stick to that.
I've seen the last season.
I'm gonna stick with Chang Chang Bingyu.
I think I think he will I think he will win this season.
Another little little to add another one, another face, I think Luka Prezel might come back this season.
You know, who knows with Luka?
Because he's Oh, yeah.
He's he's he's he's it's completely different to anyone on tour.
是的。
Yeah.
But yeah.
Mean, I see I see I think I think something on social media is back with Chris Henry again or whether they were just having lunch or whether it was a serious thing or not.
So so that could be a sort of comeback.
It's not a breakout, a comeback.
But Changbin Yu, again, as I say, I I think he's he's he's he's got something a bit special, and I think he'll definitely win this season.
Luka was one of the players you beat in qualifying, wasn't he, Steven?
I didn't wanna mention it, Mark.
Since since it comes up.
For someone to
just drop that in there.
I felt like I saw your face change a little bit when James came back.
That's all.
是的。
Yeah.
好的。
Alright.
Take Luca Brazil out.
Cancel that.
对。
Yeah.
He's got he's
he's just He's had a tough start to the season.
Put it that way.
Yeah.
He's the only way is up after defeat by Hallworth.
And then this is a tricky one.
I don't know.
I mean, this would be a shot in the dark, really, but a player who might struggle this season.
Any ideas?
He does know, do you?
Obviously, it's hard to predict this because he
And also, it's a tough one to answer because as a player, we I don't wanna wish shill on anyone.
What is that?
I was just thinking that.
If you wanna say a name and just tell you you're gonna struggle this season,
mate.
I just just think
at moments throughout the season, you're going to struggle as a player and it's trying to it's trying to just ride that wave and and, you know, damage limitation at times.
So I I don't want to see anyone struggle to the point where it it becomes crippling for them on the tour because that it is difficult.
You know, the the standard is so high now that anyone can beat anyone on their day.
So, in my answer to that question, I just hope everyone that I draw struggles.
对。
Yeah.
好的。
Okay.
So, so, okay, there there's good cop.
Here comes bad cop.
对。
Right.
不行。
No.
不行。
No.
Let's go.
I I don't no.
I I I don't really wanna wish wish but as I said, I seem to say it's the start I've ever seen.
Can the class of 92 really keep competing at the top of the game?
As as it time with F3 are are actually gonna if not all of them, but a couple of them are actually struggle this season.
We do say every time and it with every season that goes by, it feels more likely that one of them will fall away.
As you say, it just never quite seems to happen that way.
是的。
Yeah.
It it doesn't.
But but, yeah, looking looking at us, I I I don't know.
I don't know.
I mean, some of some of that's gonna depend on Ronnie's continued desire to play, I suppose.
That's always a factor, isn't
没错。
it?
对。
Yeah.
It's it's how you
how you define struggle.
I mean, there's so many tournaments.
Are are we talking, like, they they don't even get to a quarter final?
They don't even get to, like, you know, the fall off the tour was Yeah.
Defining struggle and having a bad I think There's levels to
it, isn't there?
是的。
Yeah.
For for something like Judd last year, I I mean, he he never said it, but I thought last season, in terms of winning, what what he used to win was was not a great season
对。
Mhmm.
Because we used to have winning four or five titles, yeah, you know, every term.
So struggle.
I I don't I don't I don't know.
I don't know.
But, yeah, I just I just think how long can can they go on?
是的。
Yeah.
Well Can he keep playing?
We need to work out if Mark Williams' eyes are gonna be working this season.
There's factors like that involved.
We'll be saying we'll be saying it in ten years.
Well, this season, do you think they'll finally start dropping down the rankings?
是的。
Yeah.
This podcast, they'll outlive this podcast.
对。
Yeah.
In five years, the the class nights you'll be doing a podcast about us saying, well, Ken Hallworth, Henry and Watson keep going for much longer, really.
I do the Steve Redgrave way.
If I'm still doing this podcast in ten years, shoot me.
Shoot me, all right.
And welcome back to Snooker Club to our valued listeners.
Very optimistic start to the season.
Well, he's got the big break thing now, you see, he's changed.
He's used to the telly.
He's probably got a green room over there and all
Small change though, isn't yeah.
I'm a celeb.
We're about to find the new guest.
I wonder what his rider is for this podcast, Steven.
So the first main event of the season is a cracker, the Shanghai Masters from July 27 to August 2.
24 player Invitational Field, a fan favorite.
So the world's top 16 and then eight Chinese players.
Top eight receiver Bright around two, and Jack Lesowski joins the lineup replacing Mark Allen.
There's some obviously very interesting early season matches here.
If Ronnie beats the wildcard, he'll set up a match with Kyren.
If Ding Zhongwei beats his Chinese wildcard, he'll have a a round two match against Zhao Zhingtong, which obviously would be a very interesting prospect for the Shanghai crowd.
Selby would play Shaun Murphy if he wins his round one game, and Jack Lesowski against Zhang Andu, we already know, is a round one game.
So interesting one.
Obviously, you're very fond of Shanghai, Stephen Hendry.
你去过
You've been
there quite
a bit, and this is a good tournament to get us started, isn't it?
It is.
是的。
It is.
It's a fabulous city.
I'm gonna be there.
I'm going to China today, actually, but I'm I'm gonna be there for it and maybe do a bit of commentating as well would be interesting.
But, yeah, it's a great event, huge event.
I mean, you have to say the China events are done really well.
They do the big red carpet, the, you know, the opening ceremony.
The, you know, the venues are always, you know, these these huge venues and stuff.
But at the end of the day, it's it's the table's just the same.
You gotta get in and and and do the business.
But traditionally, it's always been one of the top top players in the game that's won it.
So, yeah, it's a great opener.
It's a great you know, it's a prestigious event.
对。
Yeah.
Kyron won the Shanghai last year.
One of relatively few titles that he picked up.
He enjoyed both, you know, people we sort of, despite playing well in long sort of for long periods, none of them dominated the season the way.
Well, no one dominated the season.
It's what we said so often last, this is what made it such an exciting season.
But this tournament might give us a first taste of who It feel really good to get out of the blocks with a tournament win early on.
是的。
Yeah.
You would think, I mean, obviously tells you, as you mentioned earlier, Mark, who's been working, who's had their QO and and and and and has got Sharp for the start of the season and and who's sort of, you know, maybe not been on it straight away.
Kyren obviously won this on the mat.
Won two huge events, this and the masters, but none of them meant anything towards his rankings.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
That's that's the Masters for you, I suppose.
I mean, how much difference does it make whether whether players have been, you know, intensively practicing?
We sometimes talk about the merits of tinkering at the table versus just having a little bit of time away from it.
Well, actually, championship league is often a good indicator because a few of the top players usually enter that as bit of a just a warm up and a run in the lead up to, you know, the Shanghai Masters.
But really, the only, Kyren obviously did enter it.
He unfortunately had to withdraw because his house got burgled while he was playing which was a crazy situation but.
Didn't it?
是的。
Yeah.
So, he he played on day one and obviously was looking at the event to to to get a bit of match practice under his belt and he only played one match and he he got called home for for that emergency.
So.
Shocker.
Yeah.
Shocker.
是的。
Yeah.
But the only other top player really was Xiao Zing Tong that entered it.
Chris Wakelin was there too.
But a lot of them chose not to not to play.
So the Shanghai Masters is going to be the first time that we actually get to see a lot of the top boys.
And you think back to last year, you know, Ali Carter got to the final, was runner-up in the end.
He was a last minute call up.
对。
Yeah.
So I just wonder
I just wonder if that is a bit of an omen for Jack Lesowski because of
Mark Watson.
是的。
Yeah.
As is Lesowski this year.
Maybe it might be this sort of it's the way you can imagine Lesowski winning one actually just showing up without too much thinking time, too much prep.
It's it's also the start of a three weeks of or three or four week China swing, if you like.
对。
Yeah.
Three tournaments in a row in China.
So a long long a long slog out there for players who maybe don't enjoy going out there as much.
Not that they won't you know?
It's it's a sort of tough situation.
I was with Jackson Page this week film, and and he's obviously in both the not the track of Shanghai Masters, but the two after it.
He's saying if he loses first round of the of the China Open, then he's gotta wait two weeks before the Wuhan.
Do you come home?
Do you stay out there?
It's like so it's it's a quite a tough thing.
Obviously, we'll we'll talk about those events in the next podcast.
But, yeah, it's it's gonna be a, you know, a strange situation for a lot of players three, four, five weeks out in China at a time.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, it wouldn't bother you.
You'd be all over that Peking duck every every night of your life.
But two or three weeks in China, if you're not used to it, is would be I I because we've talked about how players don't like hanging around between matches at the best of times, but I suppose that would be doubled if you're in
a country you don't know very well.
Well, if you got two a couple of weeks to kill, you got to find a hotel.
Obviously, you got to find somewhere at practice.
对。
Yeah.
That's the thing, isn't it?
没错。
Yeah.
If you if you're if you're not a fan of the Chinese food, you know, it's it's finding, you know, obviously, there's things like McDonald's and KFC and stuff out there.
That's fine.
But I mean, can't eat that every day.
Can't live like that for two weeks.
You'd be like a touring comedian.
Yeah.
那
The
absolute pit.
Yeah.
Well, it's gonna be true.
It will be interesting to see the psychological impact of this long stretch in China, which I guess is going to be the shape of things to come as well.
It feels like there's more and more stuff going on
in Just China every bringing in a few politics of the game.
You know, this is what a lot of the players wanted.
They wanted the events to be condensed in China to make their trips, you know, feel a bit more worthwhile, but that's all well and good if you're at the the lattice biz lattice stage in business end of the event.
But if you're getting beat first round and then you're going on to the next one in a few weeks time, you're gonna have to fill your time.
So it's gonna be tough.
We'll see how they get on.
We're now very lucky to be joined by Shaun Murphy.
Shaun, firstly, great to have you here.
Says here you've been to the French Open, the tennis, among other things.
Is that right?
Yeah, no, I can just assure everybody there is no career change coming.
You're you're not gonna see my whiter than white legs.
The sun repellent legs won't be dancing around center court or any court for that matter.
That's
a shame.
You've been all you've been like he's I've seen Shaun.
He's been in The Maldives.
He's been all around the Mediterranean, and he still looks the same color as a cue ball.
我能
Can I
just interrupt quickly?
Sorry.
如果你
If if if you
all wouldn't mind, Shaun Murphy OBE, please.
Sorry.
Shaun Murphy OBE.
对。
Yes.
Let's get that right.
没错。
Yeah.
Quite rightly.
And he's Thank you very much.
He celebrates his service to the country by going off to The Maldives.
I know, yeah, imagine if I've got a knighthood.
I might never come back.
In space?
对。
Yeah.
Well, I mean, I was gonna ask how it's been putting the sort of very, very unlucky Crucible defeat behind you, but it sounds like the answer is you haven't done too badly with it.
Yeah.
Do you know what?
To be honest, listen, I wouldn't wanna bring the tone of the podcast down at all, but I don't think you ever get over something like that.
I I don't think I ever will.
I I you know, I I have I have I I wouldn't say I've tried to get over it because I've you know, it's not the first world final I've lost in.
I know how it works.
But this one has hurt more than any of the others, I have to say, I think to come so close.
是的。
Yeah.
You know, and as I said in a couple of interviews, I don't feel like I lost it, I don't feel like I had my chance to win it.
I feel like we just took took, you know, took the bull by the horns and won it.
I don't think you ever get over it.
And No.
You know, I've had moments in the last few months where I you know, you think, oh, it wasn't that great, and you look at things from a much bigger perspective.
And then the other day, I was watching the ladies tennis final, and the lady who was runner-up, like, broke into tears watching because I can just feel how she's feeling.
And I think when you've walked a day in someone's shoes, when you can really appreciate what someone's going through, it can be quite painful that, and it can get you at any stage.
There are only seven players in snooker history who've been in a world final that's gone to a deciding frame.
Of course, Steven, you've been in two, and you've been on both sides of them.
You'll you know how it feels.
是的。
Yes.
I've I've not forgotten the Ebden.
You're me.
I've not forgotten that one.
I still get shivered down my spine thinking about that one.
Well, I think and and the and the sort of analysis afterwards while I was at the Crucible and after, not a lot of people have mentioned actually how unlucky you were in that deciding frame with the cue ball landing right in front of the yellow giving you no shot.
Because if that cue ball lands out of side, you got quite a comfortable long red to try and get in and win it yourself.
这可能
This might
not have helped me actually.
All the thing all the things you've thought about at the final do you think about that?
I don't think so.
At all, actually, Hendry.
对。
Yeah.
Let's reconstruct that final frame ball by ball.
好。
Yeah.
Have you got a video?
有。
Yeah.
我们来
Let's let's do
slow motion.
好的。
Yeah.
不行。
No.
Listen.
You're you're are you right, of course, but sport is cutthroat, isn't it?
You know, someone wins and someone loses.
That's that's and that's why we love it, isn't it?
That's why we're addicted to sport.
That's why, you know, when the tennis is on or the the golf's on or, you know, any certainly, any single player sport for me, just to cut above all the team sports.
But I am in World Cup fever at the minute.
I will admit that.
But, like, I don't think I don't think team sports come anywhere near single player sports for that.
没错。
No.
It must be different when it's all on you like that.
是的。
Yeah.
I I heard you say before the final that it'd mean more than the than anything else you'd won in your career.
Was that just because it had been because you've been around a bit longer now, you have more of an appreciation of what it takes even to get to a a final view?
Yeah, totally.
I think part of
the magic and probably secret as to why I won it in 2005 was because I was so clueless about everything.
I can assure you at 22, I didn't overthink anything.
No, me neither, no.
I I say I underthought quite a lot of my twenties.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So, you know, I think that played into my sort of strengths then.
I didn't didn't over didn't second guess myself.
Just went for my shots and didn't have any battle scars.
I think when you're Mhmm.
You know, I'm 43 now and been around the world and, you know, all of that.
I think you'd see you you know, you're more experienced, but you're more experienced in the good and
the bad.
是的。
Yeah.
You're carrying little bit the right time, but you are, yeah, you're carrying a bit more.
而且,
And,
you know, that very nearly got me over the line in Sheffield.
Very nearly got me there.
I got to within a frame.
And what I'm trying to do is is to is to turn that and use it as motivation to go again.
Because, you know, I don't know how many years I've got left in the game.
I'd like to think, you know, the thick end of ten years, possibly at the top end of the game, you know, when you look at the class of '92 and how far they're going, how they keep doing it.
I'd like to think I've got plenty of years left.
And getting to within that one frame, a few shots of a second world title, you know, that needs to be the motivation for me to to work even harder, to try even more, to go even tougher, and to turn up at Sheffield next year, hopefully, as one of the contenders.
With that motivation that you've obviously got now, Shaun, what, have what have you got some specific goals for for this season?
What what what is now a good season looking ahead for Shaun Murphy?
I mean, you know, some of them will stay private.
You know, I do I do I do set goals every
Oh, come come on, Shaun.
I said keep it private.
Some of them of them will stay
私下。
private.
Some of them.
We're not gonna grill them.
I know.
I mean, I've never ever bay I've never made it to the top of the rankings.
You know, I've never ever ever made
it That was my next the question.
Is that that's got to be within reach, surely?
Yeah, I mean, it's I think it's within reach for a few of us, you know.
I feel like Judd's sort of come back to the pack a little bit, you know, just thinks it's just the way the numbers work, And there's there's a little bit of daylight there now where I think we've all got a bit of hope at the end of the tunnel that he is catchable, but, I mean, we're gonna have to go some to catch him.
You know?
It's it's all well and good saying, yeah, he's come back to us a bit.
But, like, someone's gonna have to win a lot of tournaments and win a lot of matches to catch him.
And, you know, I'm gonna try, hopefully, for that person to be me.
I think it's possible that this time next It's year I could be sat here as the world number definitely one of my goals.
It's on my list.
And I think I think earlier, Steven, you were trying to say you were asking about what my practice regime is.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, you said a few times last year how hard you were working.
Is that that just continuing that on and on and on this season again?
对。
Yeah.
Totally.
I I've gone I've gone old school.
You know?
I'm going I'm going old school vintage whilst everyone else is, you know, trying to do, you know, quality over quantity.
I'm trying to do both.
So I'm trying to do some really good practice, but loads of it.
And, you know, it's easy to hours.
对。
Yeah.
It's not easy to do hours, but but I think it makes you sharp.
I think it's the secret, isn't it?
I think it is it's it's the secret, and it's one of those things that I think has kept Judd ahead of everyone else in the last few years is that by his own admission, all he does is play snooker.
是的。
Yeah.
So, you know, if you if you're just continuously hitting balls, you are gonna be pretty good at something.
Now I've had some time off, obviously, since Sheffield.
I have have, you know, I would, I have, my snooker room behind me, as you can see, hasn't been overused in the last few weeks, but once I get into it, the queue came out last week, like I've been in that room every day, I'll be in it every day before going to Shanghai, and once the season gets in full use, like, I'm going old school, rocky mode, you know, I'll be in there every day training.
It's good to It's you out.
Know, yeah, it's not an image anyone needs.
No one needs
We've to see all got it in our heads now.
But I'm going to try, like, I'm going to try my best, and I'm really going to try my best to use the pain.
And it is painful, you know, it does hurt, but I think I'm going to try and use that pain from Sheffield as motivation to go even harder.
Would you say the overall standard is as high as it's ever been, Shaun?
Because we talked about so many different tournament winners last year.
You were saying there's a there's a bunch of players who could be world number one.
It it feels like it is you've sort of got to do everything you can to get that competitive edge, because if you don't do it, there's going to be someone else going the extra mile, I suppose.
Yeah, totally.
I think Snooker's a funny one.
You know, you turn on all the other sports and they're all telling you how hard they're working and how much practice they do and how many you you hear it about Rory McElroy, he's the last one to leave the driving range.
You know, you hear it about the tennis players, they're hitting balls every day, every day for hours.
And then you rock up to a snooker event and, you know, snooker player A will say, yeah, I've not really been practicing recently.
You're like, right.
Well, that'll be that then.
And then you ask the world number one.
He says, oh, no.
I'm practicing more than I've ever practiced.
You know, the it's not science.
It's not rocket science, lads.
It's so much if if
you keep doing something, you get better at it.
对。
Yeah.
Well, they talk about Ronald Ronaldo, Messi, who are on the training ground, and now we're after everyone else practicing free kicks.
I mean, so you know, like, why why are they good at it?
I wonder.
对。
Yeah.
不错。
Cool.
Yeah.
Makes it all good.
My old coach and yours, Stephen, used to say that success likes to leave clues, and it's a bit of a cheesy one liner, but it isn't complicated.
And you usually find that the ones who stand there at the end of the weeks with the trophies, usually they're the ones that work hardest.
Sure, we've got, well, I've got a couple of interesting questions here.
Well, obviously there's been a lot of talk about what the Chinese players in particular last year.
Is there a player that people don't talk about enough that you think is going under the radar a bit?
Well, mean, I tipped him many, many years ago.
I tipped Zhao Yilong to go ahead and become a world beater when he first came on the scene.
I don't know whether it was ten years ago, it could be a couple more years than that.
I just remember him coming on and thinking, geez, this lad's got everything.
His technique, his shot selection, his composure, the way he went round the table, everything just seemed world class.
Now that hasn't gone on and he hasn't come to fruition yet.
And I use the word yet because people bloom at different stages of their life.
I believe he's just moved to Sheffield, he's now basing himself at Victoria's Snooker Academy.
And a change of scene, sometimes a change is as good as a rest, isn't it?
So I think Zhao Yilong's still got more to give.
还有,
And, of
course, the lad who beat me in the Welsh Open, he's already had a great start to the season this year, Chang Bin Yu.
I mean
Yeah.
We talked about him a bit.
I mean, for those that can't remember, he beat me in the Welsh Open four nil.
He had
he had three total clearances and a 100 and something.
没错。
Yes.
Was the most perfect
snooker performance statistically we've ever seen, I think.
It's so funny because you, Shaun, you were saying that everyone's playing keep losing these unbelievable performances.
And then that came, and I was like
Yeah.
We were we were like, come on, Shaun.
No.
Everyone can't keep playing well against you.
And then he's hit you with four
on the spin.
That that made your point for you.
That did make your point pretty well, to
be frank.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Do know I hate being right?
I do hate being right.
是的。
Yeah.
I like to I potted one ball I potted one ball in that match.
And it was a bloody good one.
Was a good read.
So at least you have to think about on the way home.
Mean, I us longer to walk back to the Airbnb than I played the match.
It's funny, actually, as you say about the pain of being right, because I I like in difficult circumstances, I admired your line in your speech at the Crucible when you said you said years ago that Wool User was gonna be a, like, a world title win.
It's just a shame today was today.
Yeah, that was painful.
But yeah, I mean, we played earlier in the season.
I think I scraped over the line five four in an event in China against him.
Like, it was a real ding dong match.
We kept hitting each other with big breaks, one visits.
And I came off and said, he's gonna be world champion, that lad.
Know, you hear this all the time about, you know, younger players.
Doesn't happen all the time.
It doesn't happen often.
But just with him and a couple of others, they just you feel like they've just got something extra.
They've got that they've got that star quality, you know, that you just can't teach.
是的。
Yeah.
We used we've seen it quite a lot, but it's just it's I was right.
But but you were you were right again.
Did you enjoy and obviously, you said you didn't enjoy, obviously, the result.
But did you enjoy that kind of match?
Because I I loved watching it and working on it because it was just all out attack from the both years.
It was fantastic snooker.
是的。
Yeah.
I think it was I think it was I think, you know, anyone could say it was probably one of the best matches, one of the best finals that there's been.
没错。
Oh, yeah.
Just, you know, from my own selfish side, I came out the wrong side of it.
But the general I thought I thought there was a massive buzz around the whole championship this year.
You know?
I thought there was I thought there was a great mood around the whole place this year.
I think obviously led by the announcement of the world staying at the Crucible until 2045.
It felt like everyone was in everyone was in party mood.
没错。
Definitely.
It was a celebratory atmosphere to it.
It would have been very, very different if everyone else this is gonna be the last one or two at the Crucible.
But we don't have to face
that You know, the the the atmosphere there was fantastic.
You know, I had such great support right from the first round where let's not forget, I should have lost the first match.
Arguably, was a break that was a break of the tournament for you, arguably, that in that first round.
Well, Joe Joe had said to me just before the match, was even just before the match or during the match, you know, tentatively.
Because for the partners, it's difficult to know what to say and what not to say.
And, you know, not really, I wouldn't sit there and talk about the what ifs and if, you know, what happens if I lose and all this, but she said, Oh, you know, if it does go wrong, can we sneak away on holiday for a week or two?
You know, let's get away from the snooker.
And somehow I managed to salvage it, salvaged it from the wreckage and then treated it to two weeks in Sheffield.
Don't say I never take you anywhere.
What a guy.
没错。
Yeah.
一定
Must
be mixed feelings for the partner in that situation.
It's two hours of the year.
Stuff.
Yeah.
Was, I did reflect during the final on the fact that you were almost dead and buried in the first round and Will Yeezy was literally preparing to shake the hand of Mark Hallworth.
Like really both of you could have Oh,
how would you forget that?
You say you can't forget the family.
How would you forget that?
是的。
Yeah.
I don't want to interview him about that.
Don't think.
I mean, that must because that must be, well, in a way, even crueler.
Don't know.
I don't know.
It's hard to compare.
Apparently, he's more famous in China now than than he ever was.
Apparently, he's like everywhere he's everywhere in China.
Posters, pictures, videos, like like, memes, everything.
Because of that match.
Because of that match.
Been the best thing best thing he's had.
It's been really good.
Well, that tells you something about life, doesn't it?
当然。
Of course.
It's true, though, isn't it?
Just back to snooker for a second.
It is true.
You can miss anything, can't you?
哦。
Oh.
It's it's unbelievable.
It's unbelievable.
Well, people watching at home think there's balls that are unmissable on a snooker.
You're a professional snooker player.
You should pop easy, but you can literally miss anything.
When there's a little bit of pressure and something on it, it, anything is missable.
You can imagine in snooker clubs up and down the country, people in the canopy tubers are saying, oh, look at that.
I can put that.
Look at that.
Look at that.
Yeah.
There's a lot of that, isn't it?
It's like now with the World Cup, there's people watching going, well, I'd be better at right back then.
How did
he miss that?
I can assure you How did footballers miss the target?
对。
Yeah.
点球。
The penalty.
How did footballers miss the target?
They paid $200 a week, they can't even hit the target, the penalty.
Go, you pay me Here he
is, go on, say Yeah, that
I think people probably those of us that don't Well,
us, must stand then pots.
Well, very occasionally you
对。
do.
Mister must else?
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
If those of us
