Hello.
Welcome to the Snooker Scene Podcast.
I'm Dave Hendon.
We're here for another week, and it's a big week of snooker.
We got the Shenzhen open to look forward to.
It's a bit torment this 177,000 to the winner, which, you know, sounds like a sort odd first prize, but then, of course, it's a couple of grand more than some of the other Chinese events that we're on open, I think the international championship as well.
So it just shows you that promoters like to sort of bid against each other to see who can have the the big tournaments.
It was the Xiang Grand Prix as we know last year, Mark Williams, the winner, indeed the oldest ranked winner at 50.
But he's moved to Shenzhen, which is the home of Xiao Zing Tong.
So clearly, there'll be open heat as well, obviously, and I'm sure he'll bring a lot of attention to it.
And it's a huge city, Shenzhen, 17 and a half million population, so let's hope plenty of them find their way to the tour.
I'm not gonna spend much time or any time really previewing it because people listen to this podcast at different times.
In fact, have emails from people in, you know, in the future as it were, know, saying, oh, well, I'm listening to one from three years ago.
So it makes no sense to preview it right now, except to say it's all live in The UK on TNT Sports and HBO Max.
It's live on Eurosport around Europe, it's live on WST Play in various territories, and indeed of course across Chinese television and social media as well.
The WST website will have a full rundown of where you can watch the Shenzhen Open.
So looking forward to that, and these Chinese events, I mean we've had a few already this season of course, we've had three Shanghai Masters Invitation event, the ranking events China Open and World Open.
They're massive events, obviously they can make a huge difference to the world rankings.
I think in the sort of scheme of things, can be certainly from a British viewpoint, which let's be honest is is one we hear most of all.
They can be a little bit sort of disregarded, know, and and people obsess about, well, there's only one thing more boring than the pocket police, and that's the the crowd police, you know.
Oh, it's a it's a 5,000 seat arena.
Why isn't it full?
Well, go figure.
It's it's a Tuesday morning.
What do you think?
But anyway, they're huge events.
They should not be glossed over and disregarded.
These are massive tournaments, and I'm sure the great and the good will be doing their best to win it.
It'd be interesting to see I I mentioned last week, it's a kind of weird season.
Will that pattern continue?
Will another non top 16 player win it, or will sort of normal service be resumed?
You know, can Jiaxing Tong on very much home soil triumph Wu Yizi, is this the moment he starts to come good this season?
We don't know.
And of course, as always in sport, the fun is finding out.
Now, of course, I did last week set a competition question to win a paperback copy of Pots of Gold, and the answer will be revealed and the winner will be revealed in due course.
So stringing people along needlessly, but the main feature, if I can call it that this week, it's a question nobody's asked, but I'm gonna answer it anyway.
Who is the player of the decade?
Now the 2020 is obviously not over yet.
We're up to 2026, but we can have a good idea, I think from, you know, the first seven years of the decade, how it's sort of shaping up.
And what I've done is I've gone through various stats from the decade and well, I'll give you an example, most matches won is a very simple metric, most tournaments won, most centuries made, etcetera etcetera.
There are nine categories, okay, that I'm gonna go through.
I'm gonna give you the top five in each category.
But I've also and people, you know, some people waste their lives.
I've also come up with my own ranking system to rank the players and there'll be an overall ranking list who are the it's actually a top five of the twenty twenties.
Okay?
Now the ranking system, say I've come up with myself, it's actually I've gone back old school because there's a lot of chat about the the ranking system and blah blah blah, most of it dull, let's be honest.
But the old school ranking system from the eighties, you would get if you want to rank an event, say you won the UK championship, you got six points.
Yes, did, you got six points.
If you're a runner, you got five and so on and so on, down to the last 32.
I've slightly tweaked that, okay?
So if you're top of any of these lists you get six points, second place you get four, I think you deserve an extra point for being top.
So six points for coming top if you're following this, second place you get four points, third place you get three, fourth place you get two, fifth place you get one point.
Okay, so there's nine lists.
Okay, I hope this is clear.
Well, I'll read one of the lists.
Okay, so most matches won in the 2020s counting all tournaments.
Okay, so in fifth place in this list with one point, Ali Carter, he's won 257 matches.
Fourth place, John Higgins has won 318 matches.
This is ahead of the Shenzhen Open.
Third place, Mark Selby has won 338 matches in the twenty twenties.
Second place, Kyren Wilson has won 375 matches, so he gets four points.
At top of the list with six points, it's Judd Trump 425.
Already this feels like Eurovision.
I feel like we should go to the, you know, the Icelandic jury or something in Reykjavik.
But anyway, judge Trump, the fact is, in this decade, has won 50 more matches than the next player on the list, Kyle Wilson.
Then I thought, okay.
But that includes, you know, Champions League and a lot of tournaments actually that, you know, certain players can't play in.
Let's have a look at ranking events only.
Ranking events only the events open to everybody in this period, what is the top five there?
So fifth place in ranking events in the 2020s is John Higgins, he gets a point.
Fourth place Sean Murphy, I'm sorry two eleven, John's one, John Higgins.
Fourth place Sean Murphy two eighteen matches won.
Third place Mark Selby two forty.
Second place Kyren Wilson again two forty five so he gets four points.
Top of the shop Judd Trump three twenty six he gets the six points.
So Trump winning about 81 matches more there than the next player on the list.
But again, you can delve into that and say, well not everyone's played in everything.
What about percentage of matches won in ranking events?
So what percentage of the matches that players have played in ranking events have they won?
Now I've had to filter a few out here because obviously there's some people who've only played in they may have played in one tournament or two tournaments and you know they would have ridiculously high stats.
It's players on tour, there's some players who were on the list and I should credit obviously Q Tracker here for their extensive statistical archive for a lot of help with this.
But percentage wise ranking of it matches one and people may still be listening to this podcast.
I get the feeling in about five minutes I could say anything.
I could say anything because I suspect I'm losing the audience, but we'll continue, some people might be interested.
Okay, so by percentage of matches won in ranking events, what is the top five for the twenty twenties?
Here's the answer.
Number five, so we're counting down from five to one in all these.
Number five, John Higgins, 69.6% of all ranking of it matches played, John Higgins has won in this decade.
Fourth place, Mark Selby, 71%.
Third place, Neil Robertson, 71.5%.
Second place, Ronnie O'Sullivan, 72.5%.
Top of the list.
Percentages of ranking event matches won in the 2020s, Judd Trump, 8%.
Okay?
So so far, there are three categories and Trump has taken maximum six points from all of them.
But what is sport really about?
I suppose trophies, It's about winning tournaments.
So all tournaments played in the 2020s, what is the top five in terms of titles won?
Now that I should say there are some ties and where there are ties, so say you're tied as in this case for fourth place, you will take two points each.
Okay?
So that is how it's shared around.
Well, I'm sort of acting as if this is a long standing, you know, system where really I invented it about ten minutes ago.
But anyway, titles won in the 2020s.
Okay?
So we've got joint fourth place here.
10 titles, Ronny O'Sullivan, Karen Wilson, and Mark Allen.
In third place, 11 titles, Neil Robertson.
Second place, 13 titles Mark Selby.
First place, 21 titles, Judd Trump.
But again, I thought, okay, we'll boil it down to ranking events because that's what everyone can play in.
There were some tournaments there other players couldn't play in.
So what's the top five ranking titles won in the 2020s?
This might of all the categories be actually the most significant.
And here is the top five.
好的。
Okay.
Joint fourth, Karen Wilson and Mark Allen, seven titles.
Third place, nine ranking titles in the in the twenty twenties, Mark Selby.
Second place, 10 ranking titles in this decade, Neil Robertson.
And top again, ranking events won in the twenty twenties, in this decade, 17 judge Trump, so seven more than Neil Robertson.
Centuries.
Okay?
Let's look at centuries.
And again, I've got two categories here.
So the first one is total centuries made in the decade.
Number five, Ronnie O'Sullivan, 302.
Number four, Mark Selby, 365.
Number three, Neil Robertson, 381.
Number two, Karen Wilson, 393.
And top of the shop, once again, is Judd Trump, 499.
And you don't need to be a maths genius to know that that means the first one he makes in Shenzhen, presuming he makes one, will be his five hundredth of the decade.
He is a 103 centuries ahead of Kyle Wilson in second place.
Judd Trump, again, he's come top so far in every list.
Again though, let's boil it down to ranking events because, you know, again, that they're the torments everyone can play and there are other torments some people are in, some aren't.
So the top five century break makers of the decade in ranking events, number five, Sean Murphy, 256.
Number four, Mark Selby, 260.
Number three, Karen Wilson, 263.
Number two, Neil Robertson, 294.
And number one, once again, is judge Trump, three seventy seven.
In terms of centuries from ranking events in the decade, he's 83 ahead of Neil Robertson in second place.
What about maximum breaks?
That's again an indicator of greatness in Snooker.
Now in this we've got five players who've made four and four players have made five and again all the players have made five will get six points, all the players have made four will get four points.
And before anyone writes in about the system, I invented it, okay, I take full responsibility, I would say it's only a bit of fun, but that's that's for the audience to decide.
But anyway, 107 breaks this decade, so it's well, I suppose they're joint fifth really, but with four, John Higgins, Gary Wilson, Karen Wilson, Mark Allen and Zhang Guodong.
And with five, Judd Trump, Zhang Amber, Tepp Charanu, and Sean Murphy.
We've got one more category if you can bear it, and that is of course the Triple Crown, which as you know I'm a big fan of.
So who's won the most Triple Crown titles this decade?
Now this interestingly or not, depending on your point of view, is the only category where Judd Trump is not top.
Okay?
So we've got five players who won two Triple Crown titles in the 2020s.
Judd Trump, Mark Selby, Jazzing Tong, Neil Robertson, and Kara Wilson.
And one player who's won four top of this list is Ronnie O'Sullivan.
So Ronnie O'Sullivan, because he won two world championships and two masters.
Sorry, he's won he hasn't.
He's won two world championships, the UK championship and the masters, so he's top of that list.
So that is nine different lists.
好的。
Okay.
So it's a possible score of 54 because it's six points finishing top of each.
We've got a very definitive top five, which I will now unveil.
And in time old fashion we'll do it in reverse order.
This is the ranking list based on all the nine categories.
These are the top five players of the decade in reverse order with the points that I've allocated them or have been allocated through this ranking system.
Okay, it'd be over soon, don't worry, we'll be on to you know Brian Campbell's email or whatever in a minute, but the ranking list top five of the 2020s with all these categories is as follows.
Number five with 13 points, Romeo Sullivan.
Number four with 21 points, Neil Robertson.
Number three with 23 points, Mark Selby.
Number two with 27 points, Karen Wilson.
And top of the list with 52 points out of a possible 54 is Judd Trump, and that's 25 points ahead of second place.
So Judd Trump is by a long way the player of the decade.
Now that might not be news to anybody, it's probably if I asked you beforehand who do you think will come top, That's who you would have said, but what's interesting is in almost every list, he's not only top, he's a long way top.
I mean, look at the centuries, know, over a 100 more for the decade than the next place, ranking title seven more, total titles eight more.
He's won 78% of all ranking event matches this decade and he's won 50 more matches than anyone else overall.
It's pretty impressive I think and I mean it may put to bed because there's still some people who say well how's he world number one because he's not at the minute, but the clue as to why he was there for so long is in these numbers.
Numbers don't lie, they can be obviously looked at in different ways and I've come up with a ranking system, but I think it's pretty pretty rock solid, frankly.
《Talking Snooker》
Talking Snooker, they had Ali Carter on this last week.
It made headlines in lots of newspapers.
I I suspect this won't.
It's a bit more niche, but anyway, I've done it now, and that is I'll through again the top not the whole thing, the top five players of the decade using all these metrics.
Number five, Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Number four, Neil Robertson.
Number three, Mark Selby.
Number two, Karen Wilson.
And number one, Chuck Trump.
I feel we must go to the competition now because we people may be only listening for that.
But I had a lot I'm not kidding.
I had a lot of entries.
So thank you to everyone who entered.
A lot of entries came in.
I mean, literally a lot.
And so to pick a winner, I literally have scrolled down sort of at random, okay, and just pointed at the screen.
And that's what I've done to find the winner.
And the winner is Brian Riddell.
Some say, well, Brian Riddell.
That's your that's your name.
And the question was, and Brian answered it correctly, where was the last world championship before it went to the crucible?
Where was the final held?
Now the key thing thing there is the final, not the World Championship, because 1976, it was split between Middlesbrough, Town Hall, and Withensham Forum in Manchester.
The final was at Withensham Forum.
So it was quite good actually.
Some people got the answer wrong, which is kind of good because it means, you know, everyone cheated.
I'm not saying Brian did, by the way.
But within Shaw Forum, Ray Ridden beat Alex Higgins, and then it moved to The Crucible the following year.
So thank you, Brian, for entering.
Thank you to everyone entering.
Brian, I will I will message you and arrange to send the copy of the book.
There's been controversy because inevitably, because Chow in China says well, she got the answer right, but she said, of course, I'd love to win a signed copy, but the main reason I'm entering is something you said on the podcast.
One lucky listener can get their hands on it, actually thinking about it before before it comes out.
I know the book comes out on the October 8, and it seems pretty obvious that when you said that, you weren't thinking about your listeners in Australia, Canada, and especially China.
I'm not very happy about this, so I've decided to enter just to cause you a little trouble and to remind you Snooker Scene Podcast has listeners all over the world.
Well, enough.
I mean, the thing is you might assume that the person who wrote the book would be across release dates and all that, but to be honest, it's kind of passed me by.
I know it's coming out and I hope know, obviously people will buy it, but that's about as far as I know about it.
But anyway, point well made, but anyway Brian will get the copy of it.
We're gonna go after a bit of a ragged start to the emails now, and well, we had some feedback about the English Open from people who've been there, and there was a sort of issue with tickets and all the rest of it, but Steve Mercer went and this is what he said, he said, hope you're keeping well.
I'm slightly tardy I'm afraid, but I thought I would share my experience of attending the English Open a couple of weeks ago.
After my disappointment at EIS in April, I went along to the Brentwood Centre expectantly clutching my copy of Pots of Gold in hope of at last getting it autographed, but alas our paths didn't cross on this occasion.
Never mind, I have tickets to the Champion of Champions in November, so perhaps I'll have more luck then.
Well, hopefully, I will be at the Champion of Champions, Steve, so I, you know, if I see you there, please do please do proffer it and I'll sign it by all means.
Anyway, back to the English Open, in your latest podcast, correspondent Liz Blackburn mentioned how helpful she had found the WST staff at the Brentwood Centre, and I would like to echo her sentiments.
As I had purchased my tickets last year before WST changed their booking agent, I had huge problems actually obtaining my tickets before the event.
Despite numerous emails to both Ticketmaster and WST, it's unforgivable that neither company provides a customer service phone number.
I'd still not receive my tickets before the event, however once I got to the venue a very helpful young lady from WST clarified everything and helped me to locate my tickets.
Apparently what nobody had told me was that unlike in previous years I need to download an app to get my tickets, and she very patiently showed me what to do on my phone without once rolling their eyes or sighing audibly, which is different maybe to people I'm adding this in different maybe to people listening out our earlier to our earlier feature.
I think her name was Josie or Jodie and she saved the day for me, so I'm deeply grateful.
Well yeah, Jodie is one of the event managers and I think I said it could have been Pat Wells last week, but they all do a really good job and are very helpful and Jodi sounds like she has played a blinder there, so that's good to hear.
Steve says I must also say a huge thanks to WST staff member Glenn who was an absolute legend in helping me out at the event.
This experience did get me thinking though.
I wonder whether you would consider inviting members of the WSD staff for a chat on your podcast so that we could find out a little bit more about the guys in red fleeces.
Many of them will be familiar faces to snooker fans, and I'm sure they must have a wealth of entertaining tales to tell about their experience at over the years.
Well, yes, I mean, the security guys, they are great and, know, Mark Williams ahead of it all and Martin and and, you know, some of the guys there that have there a long time and very friendly, and and their job is to look after the fans, make sure that they behave properly, but also know where they're going and have what they need.
Marshy and those guys, they do a good job, so maybe we will.
As to the event itself, it was fantastic.
I was fortunate enough to witness Sean Murphy's 10 red one four seven attempt accompanied by her excellent commentary along with numerous other entertaining matches.
I was also encouraged to hear about the £25,000,000 Brentwood Centre refurbishment.
I'm sure both players and fans alike will appreciate the new separate events entrance and upgraded catering facilities.
On a separate note, I'm sorry, separate topic, I heard in the news recently that Live Golf have filed for bankruptcy.
I wondered whether you think that the collapse of this ill fated Arrival Golf Tour now makes it less likely we may ever see the formation of a breakaway snooker tour.
It does seem like talk of this happening has all but disappeared recently.
Thanks for keeping up the brilliant podcast.
Well, you, Steve.
The Live Golf, it has gone that is because the sound is have divested their in sport, haven't they?
You know, I mean, that's why the Snooker ranking event went.
They put a lot of money to different sports and now we're withdrawing it again.
Here's the thing about rival tours and I can speak with a little bit of authority on this because I was sort of in the periphery of the TSN proposed breakaway tour back twenty five years ago now, 2001, they announced a breakaway tour.
The mistake people make is they think, we'll just sign up the players and then that will make it easy.
That actually is the easy part.
The hard part is the infrastructure that you need.
If you're going to run a tour, you need loads of staff, you need a constant revenue stream that people always talk about the initial money investment, but that will go very soon because you've got to book venues, you've got to pay for everything, pay for everybody, there's a lot of costs involved in it.
And also the problem that we had a couple of years ago, it was suggested that, you know, there was gonna be a breakaway and various players apparently signed NDAs and were pretty bullish about what's gonna happen.
It didn't happen.
And one of the reasons is the broadcasters are very loyal to Will Snooker Scene the BBC in particular.
They're locked in for another six years, you know, TNT, HBO, Eurosport are locked in for another five, you've got the Chinese as well, they've got a very good relationship with.
So sort of breaking all that down, you need more than just players, you need a massive infrastructure and it's just really, really difficult and you will burn through money very, very quickly.
So I think arrival tour is unlikely, but what I think could happen is maybe more independent events coming along, promoters coming along, trying to put events on.
The extent to which they'll work with World Snooker or World Snooker will work with them will I think decide the success or otherwise of these events.
But for example, I mean I think most people, well I can't speak for most people, but a lot of people agree that it seems odd that given the interest in snooker in Europe, there aren't any tournaments in Europe, Continental Europe that is, other than the German masters on the Pro Tour.
So it could be that a promoter comes along and says, I'm gonna run six events in Europe, Can you work with me?
Can you give the dates?
Or can I just actually persuade players to play in them?
Jason Ferguson, WPPC chairman just last week was interviewed by Phil Hague in the Metro and he said he thinks in the near future there'll be tournaments on at the same time, more than one tournament on at the same time.
You see that in tennis, see it in golf, you see it in cricket, lots of sports actually can survive that.
So I think that's more likely than a different tour, you might get more opportunities for independent promoters.
It all comes down to supply and demand, if there's interest enough from the public, then you know, there'll be more events.
But anyway, hopefully answers that.
Now our dear friend Jorit from The Netherlands says, hope you're well.
I have an important question.
Besides the important matters about the misrule, the ranking system, the future of our beloved sport, etcetera, etcetera, when or when is big break coming to our screens, or has it been canceled?
I hope you have the answer so I don't lose any more sleep.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Well, know the answer to this, Joris, and this this is a podcast exclusive.
I can tell you exactly when it's gonna be on.
It's gonna be on BBC two in January after the masters.
That's when big break is gonna be transmitted.
BBC two in January after the masters.
So that that is just a direct answer to your question.
Who else have we got here?
Liz Humphries.
Liz says, I hope this finds you well.
It's a while since our last email, but I want you to get in touch to say a huge thank you to you and your commentator colleagues for a magnificent job covering table one of the qualifying matches in Leicester these last couple of weeks.
I've been able to watch excuse me.
I've been able to watch a fair bit of the coverage, which has been great for seeing a wide range of players and different levels of quality and experience.
I've been full of admiration for the excellent work by you, Michael Day, Michael McMullen and affiliates.
It cannot been easy for you all to keep going as single commentators across so many sessions, especially when matches have been long and at times low quality.
It's all been thoroughly entertaining, so thank you again, and if possible please also pass on my thanks to your colleagues, I don't know how to contact them.
Well, you Liz.
I have done that Liz and it was much appreciated.
Michael Day of course, know, making his commentary debut through this and he's done a fine job and it's been interesting I think, quality has varied wildly.
Now I suppose you expect that anyway in any match environment, any tournament environment, but there's been some matches that have been you do look at some of the players and think what are you doing?
But other times, look at them and think, well, you you're a top player.
I've been very impressed with Liam Davis.
You know, he's really stepped up and he's looking good.
He's getting through in all the events.
Aaron Hill, I commented on.
I mean, made three centuries in a best of seven, so that speaks for itself, but I think he's gonna be, you know, heading heading in the right direction.
So it's been interesting, but thank you.
It's it's obviously a new thing WST player doing, putting commentary on qualifying on table one and there has been a good reaction to it which is good and we should thank the team there as well, it's a small team at World Snooker who sort of is husband is the right term, I don't know.
They basically set up the commentary portal, if you like, and make sure it's all running properly there if there's any problems and all the rest of it.
So they sort of they're there in the background holding us up as it were.
But anyway, thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Go next to Andrew Job.
Okay?
Andrew says and Andrew's included a graphic, which no obviously, no one can see, but anyway, hope you're doing well enjoying the season so far.
Thank you, Andrew.
Your mention in this week's episode of the temporary crexit while the crucible is being renovated reminded me of a point I meant to raise this summer, but kept forgetting to send you.
You mentioned when discussing potential temporary homes for the world championship that it would be important that whichever venue is chosen should not overshadow and surpass the crucible to a point where people might just say, not keep it here?
My understanding is that the current official plan is for the Taunt to only be displaced for well, Andrew, you say 2028.
It's actually 2029.
Okay?
With the possible necessity of finding a venue for it's 2030.
It seems to me an easy way to avoid calls for a temporary venue to become permanent would be if The Crucible is still unavailable to hold the two thousand thirty tournament at a different venue than that chosen for 2029.
I can imagine a world where if '29 and 30 worlds are both successfully held out, for example, for instance, Ali Pally, some people within the snooker community would make noises about just keeping there after two years, whereas if '29 was at Ali Pally and 30 was at Mattioli, Rinne and Leicester to pick another mooted venue at random, it would be harder to point to consecutive years of success.
Yeah, well, we'll see.
I mean, you know, let's be honest, if you live in The UK, you'll be aware that sort of building projects and construction projects don't always run to plan and you know, I think it would be really optimistic to think we're only gonna miss one year, it may be two, it may be more, we don't know.
But what you say makes sense.
The only problem is getting venues is difficult.
Getting a venue, you need the crucible for three weeks, you know, the setup and then the tournament itself.
And one of the issues is, of course, Sheffield City Council provide the crucible for free at the moment.
Can Will Snooker Scene do a deal with a venue, with a council where they get that again, but also can they find somewhere that's already available?
It's gonna be interesting.
We'll find that in due course.
Andrew continues, also this summer, you mentioned you'll be in touch with a referee to answer any any rules queries that listeners may have.
I have two hopefully straightforward questions which that referee can hopefully answer.
First question, I know that the choice of which player makes the initial break off shot and which player shoots first on a respotted black is decided via a tonicos.
What I don't know is, how does the referee decide which player gets to call the toss?
好的。
Okay.
Well, I haven't actually sent this to the referee in question, but I'll answer it myself.
I mean, I'm pretty sure that is just random.
They just literally will just turn to a player.
I don't think there's any sort of set protocol.
Maybe it's the highest ranked player, I'm not sure, but I think it's just random, they'll just sort of say to whoever, you know, you call because who cares really.
Secondly, what I don't know is how My second question, in a free ball situation, is it legal to use the declared free ball to plant an object ball?
Tell Bill the straight what exactly I'm asking.
I'm attaching a make Microsoft Paint drawing to hopefully clarify.
For the benefit of the listeners, I've depicted a situation with one red ball remaining on the table and hanging over a corner pocket, but covered by the blue ball with all of the colors on their spots and the cue ball in bulk.
Were this a free ball situation?
Would it be legal to nominate the blue as the free ball and have implant the red into the pocket?
Hopefully, this question makes sense.
Well, yeah, I mean, the rules of the the rules of the sport, I can answer this, the rules of the sport state you can do that, yes, and if you pot well, if you pot the red off the blue, so the blue is the free ball, you pop the red, that's one point.
If both balls go in, it's two points.
And obviously, the blue then comes back on its spot, the red stays down.
I mean, I'm sure that's right, that must be.
But anyway, I I yes.
Apologies.
I meant to send send that to our mystery referee and I forgot, but I'm sure if he's listening, can tell me if I've it right or not.
Thank you for that.
Now then, what else have we got here?
Because I've gone through oh, yes.
I've gone through the the Pots of Gold entries, and thank you.
But on Pots of Gold, this is a book I wrote, and it's out in paperback in The UK very soon.
But Joe Murphy says, I loved your last episode on Snooker Scene Podcast.
I'm delighted for Jack Jones winning at the British Open.
I'd to see new winners.
Congratulations on the first anniversary of the publication of Pots of Gold.
It's a remarkable achievement, and one year on it remains a book I returned to with real pleasure.
As an Irish reader, I was particularly grateful to discover the stories of early Irish players such as Joe Brady and Jackie Ray.
It was a genuine delight to see their place in the formative years of the game properly recorded and celebrated.
I also found the account of Harry Jackson's burglary of a set of billiard balls fascinating, the fact it led to the first conviction in Britain based on the new fingerprint evidence is a wonderful piece of sporting and social history.
That's true.
是的。
Yes.
Harry Jackson, he was a well, let's not be coy, a thief, and he broke into some property and stole a set of billiard balls with his bare hands, but they just introduced fingerprinting technology and that's how he was caught.
He was the first person convicted under that under that legislation.
Now we continue, I remember fondly being the very first person to buy a copy at the British Oaks in in Chelten on the 09/24/2025, and and of having it signed by you there and then, that remains a special memory.
So I remember that as well.
You you I think you persuaded the local bookshop to let you in and get a copy, which fair play to you.
Thank you for the care, research, and storytelling you brought to the book.
Pots of Gold is a real gift to anyone who loves the game.
It's history.
Here's to many more years of it being read and enjoyed.
With warmest congratulations and thanks.
Well, a lovely email, thank you very much.
Yes, I mean, you know, it was a labor of love I suppose, but you know, is very deliberately the subheading is a history of snooker, I'm not saying it's the definitive history, are others, but it's very much a history based on two things really, one is the recollections of people who actually took part and secondly, there is a social history element to it showing how in particular Britain changed over that time because obviously the sport has been based here so much and when it became part of the culture, I thought it was interesting to look at the cultural elements that were sort of relevant at the time.
But anyway, the book as I say, it's coming out in paperback.
Brian Riddle doesn't have to buy it because it's coming to him via post.
By the way, Brian, I say that.
I'm gonna be away doing the Shenzhen Open, so it won't be in the next week, it'll be after that, but you will get it, I assure you.
Now Matthias also entered the competition, but unfortunately he didn't win, but he says I went to watch live snooker for the first time at the English Open in Brentwood.
It was an absolutely fantastic experience.
I'd given my daughter a trip to England as a present for finishing school, and she was one of the youngest spectators in the audience.
We had a great time, and we're even able to see our star, Shaun Murphy, three times.
The match between Murphy and Pang, which Murphy won four three, went on until late at night.
Afterwards, as some of the last spectators still there, we even got the chance to shake his hand.
Well, I'm delighted.
I think you're from Germany, Matijn said, I'm delighted that you and your daughter enjoyed it.
And a little mention there, you know, I'm sure Sean was great with you and and said hello, and and that is one thing I think players do deserve credit for.
By and large, they will, you know, acknowledge the fans, not only acknowledge them, talk to them, pose for selfies, take autographs.
As a group of people, they're very good at that and I think we should say that because it's not true is it in every sport, let's be honest, but it is true in snooker.
We move on to Zuber Koreshi.
He says the recent rugby so yeah.
Sorry.
I don't know why I stopped reading the email there.
The recent rugby greatest rivalry series between the Springboks and All Blacks got me thinking about the greatest rivalry in this wonderful sport.
Most will say Henry v White and it was superb, but for well, I think it yeah.
People of a certain age might say that, but, know, anyway.
But for me, the greatest was the rivalry that was the massive part of the snooker boom and revolution, which was Steve Davis versus Alex Higgins.
It was just captivating, compelling and riveting in every way, the contrasting characters, the spice and tension between the two.
Although overall one-sided in favor of Steve, some of Alex's wins will never be forgotten.
He won the nineteen eighty Crucible Quarter Final, Steve won the nineteen eighty UK final and the nineteen eighty three World Semi, then of course came the jewel in the crown, the eighty three UK final.
Our And youngest Snooker family may not believe it, but literally the nation stopped that amazing weekend in early January nineteen eighty three.
The comeback from seven nil down was electric, then so close and tantalizing on the Sunday.
It was just pure unbelievable gripping drama.
We had various sets of visitors that weekend and everyone was just glued to it, adults and kids.
I just cried and cried at the end, but had to somehow get myself up for the year five Christmas play the next day, where I have the leading role.
I must say the final had a deep psychological impact on Steve for the next two or three years.
I mean, this is all good stuff, but let's not gloss over the Christmas play.
He said had the leading role.
I mean, was this the nativity?
It would seem obvious at Christmas.
He said leading role, I mean, what were you baby Jesus?
We need to know more about the Christmas play, but we'll move on.
The next year again in the nineteen eighty four UK final, Alex Storm back from nine eight down to nine eight down from eight two behind, but thankfully, Steve pulled away.
And so you you were a Steve fan.
Finally, of course, the first round of the eighty five masters were near midnight in a jam packed rowdy Wembley Conference Center, Alex one five four.
Again, young youngsters won't believe it, but next day, primary schools everywhere, everyone was talking about it.
A first round masters match.
What incredible days they were.
The BBC movie Rack Pack was a brilliant tribute to the rivalry.
Whenever a tournament was on, we would always be checking the draw to see if there's a chance they may clash.
We owe these two icons so much for the way Snooker took off.
They'll never be forgotten.
Several years ago in your Snooker Scene blog, you put them both on Snooker's Mount Rushmore along with Hendon and Ronnie, and that was lovely to read.
Would love to get your thoughts.
Well, Zubair, you've said it all really, I mean it's worth saying the rivalry, it was a rivalry because they were very different, and they both were very important in bringing different elements to Snooker.
Alex Siggins brought a working class audience primarily and a kind of sense of danger I suppose.
Steve was from a working class background, but he because he was clean-cut and not a bad boy and not a hell raiser and tear away, he encouraged a kind of middle class audience, which Snooker also needed in the 1980s to grow and become a respectable professional sport.
So there were two sides really of the same coin.
Steve obviously very dedicated, Alex Higgins you know, had a lot of complications in his life, which maybe stopped him winning more tournaments.
You mentioned there three very important wins for Higgins.
He won against Davis, yes, at the World Championship, of course, that UK final sixteen fifteen from seven nil down, and indeed at the Masters where there was that pitch invasion.
And Alex and I'll this up.
Okay?
So I'm gonna use the word fudging.
Okay?
It's not the word Alex used, but I'm gonna use the word fudging.
So when he's one five four, it's absolute pandemonium.
People are running into the arena, and he sort of looks somewhere towards the camera and shouts, we're fudging back, for which I'm sure he was fined.
So they were three big wins, but overall, the head to head, they played 20 well, they played 31 times with one draw, but Davis won 25 and Alex only won five.
So Davis had a massive lead in the head to head and beat Alex just looking through some of these matches often very comfortably.
But it's true as well, as you've pointed out, that Alex Higgins had his high profile wins.
Yeah, I mean we've had a lot of great rivalries and that's one that I think is a good one other than the fact that a bit like now Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ali Carter, I mean that's incredibly one-sided towards Ronnie O'Sullivan even though the sort of personal rivalry is really what people are interested in.
People look at Snooker in the sort of modern age, so from the time the World Championship went open in 1969, the first rivalry was Ray Reardon and John Spencer.
They didn't particularly like each other, they weren't the same sort of people, they riled each other all, certainly Reardon and Reardon was very happy about that as he told me when I interviewed him for the aforementioned book Pots of Gold.
I guess, Davis Higgins was kind of the rivalry in the in the early eighties, which gave way to, yes, Henry White, and that was a that was the opposite of the Reardon Spencer, that was a very friendly rivalry.
I mean, Jimmy was Stephen Hendry's hero growing up, he really admired his shot making and his sort of panache and his flare, so they got on those two and they played a very similar game, it's just that in the World Finals, as we know those four World Finals, Henry played it better ultimately.
In other big tournaments Jimmy beat him quite often actually, but not at the crucible.
And then I guess we had sort of the class of '92 was a three way rivalry.
I think that's an interesting dynamic to examine Higgins, O'Sullivan Higgins Williams and Williams O'Sullivan, all slightly different.
I always sort of whenever, and the stats don't always bear this out, but I always kind of back Mark to beat John, I always back Ronnie to beat Mark, and I kind of always back John to beat Ronnie.
It's like a three way standoff.
Now that obviously that doesn't always happen and there's been high profile occasions where it hasn't happened, but it's interesting there's sort of different dynamics to each of those rivalries.
I guess since then we've had Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Selby, that is a sort of quintessential rivalry because again like Davis Higgins, it's two different types of player, two different types of personality.
You've got the sort of, you know, the big character in O'Sullivan, genius, the, you know, the great brake builder, the flare player, and then you've got Mark Selby, the hard worker, you know, the tactician if you like, both great players and I think we've seen now, they played in Wuhan and you see actually a lot of respect between the two and they've had their moments over the years, but I think, you know, ultimately all these guys, and it would be true of Reardon and Spencer in the end as well, they could all just reflect, look, we've just been snooker players, we played the game, we played it our best, we've all won plenty, and let's leave it to the next slot.
So what's the next rivalry?
I mean, think there's an assumption and it must be wrong that all the Chinese players must get on great.
Well why should they?
Why should they?
So it'd be interesting to see if a proper rivalry develops between a couple of the Chinese players coming through.
We'll see, but anyway thank you for your memories and good memories they were.
Now, Rob Francis, of course, has been on the podcast, and as we know, he's not a super fan, don't call him that.
But he says, thank you for articulating what I've always thought regarding that he should have one more phrase.
It eternally bugs me whenever I hear people say this because it essentially raises the question as to where these titles would come from, a front on which nobody ever seems able to really give a clear answer.
The number of trophies out there is pretty small compared to the talent we have in the sport, and the most coveted coveted of them only comes once a year.
There simply is not enough silverware across the snooker circuit for every player to have won what they should.
It's similar with the term underachiever.
Statistically speaking, in the name of balance, if a player is underachieved, there must also have been a player who is overachieved, but that's an area you hear comparatively little about.
Of course, you can add relative to expectation perhaps, excuse me, as one of your listeners did in the last episode, which may be a bit more palatable, but it's ultimately not the same thing.
I actually conducted a bit of hasty research on this shortly after the recent world championship, asking for players on tour who people thought had underachieved with responses including the entire class of 92, 14 of the top twenty, and twenty of the top 32.
Folk will obviously have different opinions, and this is a spread of them, but these are ridiculously high numbers and point to underachiever being a rather senseless term when it's encompassing such a huge portion of top players.
If such a thing does exist, it's mathematically not possible for it to be on the scale we tend to hear about.
The six of the top 20 who didn't come up as underachievers were Xiao Zing Tong, Wu Yizi, Conan Wilson, Xiao Gu Dong, Chris Wakelin and Zhang Yanda.
Have they been significantly overachieved?
I certainly wouldn't say so.
You never hear many players described as having won exactly the right amount either, the plain old achievers, but it's basically everyone on tour really.
Hearing people say Ali Kata should have won more did get somewhat under my skin recently, and I think it understates what a fantastic achievement seven ranking titles is.
It's joint sixteenth of all time.
I guess you could argue it's essentially just a nicety, a compliment on ability and potential, but I don't think we should forget just how hard it is to win even a relatively small number of trophies and how finite the opportunities are to collect them.
PS, thanks again for inviting on the show.
Had a lot of great feedback from folk in both Cheltenham and Brentwood.
I got the impression people really enjoyed it.
Well, thank you, Rob, you were very good on the show, and Rob has articulated there very clearly what I was saying, which is that as he says, there's only so many tournaments.
If one player wins more, another player will win fewer.
That's just a basic fact.
So I I think I suppose you you know, you you can look at for example, someone like Matthew Stevens.
Now Matthew, in the early two thousands, we got about twenty years, was one of the four or five best players in the game.
He won one ranking title, the UK Championship in 2003.
That does seem a low return for a player with his potential, but you know that doesn't tell the whole story because he won the masters, he won the Scottish masters which was a huge invitation event at the time, all the top players.
In fact, beat, this is true, he beat all three members of the class of '92 to win that in 1999, Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins, Mark Williams.
He won the North Island trophy, which was similarly an invitation event.
He was in two world finals, which takes him doing.
So, you know, has did he underachieve?
Well, by some metrics, yes, but by others, no.
He had a a fine career, and of course, he's still playing now.
But anyway, thank you for bringing that to our attention, and, you made some very good points.
Gary Galligan says, hi, Davey boy.
Any news if Yanbing Tao will return to the tour, or has he pursued a different path in life?
Number two, I'd love to hear a story or two on the late great Paul Hunter.
How could how good could he have been could he have reached Williams Higgins Trump Selby level of greatness?
Thanks, your big bro g.
Well, g, Yanbing Tao, I heard he'd moved to Vietnam.
I don't know whether he's still there.
I think he can come back next year, but whether he will I don't know, I don't know, you hear every now and again the story about him, but we'll see I guess.
Paul Hunter, I will be doing an episode to mark the passing of Paul Hunter twenty years ago, so I'll go into more detail then about him.
But I mean, was already good, I mean, he won the Masters three times, you know, and would have won a lot more tournaments, I'm sure.
In fact, the thing is, you know, and it's kind of more pointed in a way, right, you know, right now he'd be 47, he would still be younger than the class of '92 or at the top, he could still be contending with torments now, is the truth.
But anyway, I'll I'll do that in a in a special episode next week or in a couple of weeks time.
I may have missed a few emails this week because the inbox was flooded with Pots of Gold competition entries, for which I thank you again, but I found one here from John, he says, I agree with your observation of the weirdness the start of the season, but more than underperforming top players what I've noticed is many players further down the rankings playing.
The weird part is they're not from China as has been the long running story, but from The UK and Ireland.
Here's a quick recap, so Jack Jones back to back ranking titles at the Championship League and British Open.
Liam Highfield, first career ranking semifinal at the British Open.
You say you're Oliver Lyons first semifinal at the British Open, that wasn't this season, course, was a couple of years ago now.
Ditto Jackson Page Championship League final, that wasn't this year, that would have been well a couple of years ago I think.
Aaron Hill reached the British Open quarter finals, Stan Moody quarter finals, Wuhan and British Open, Leon Crowley took Wilson to five each, the decider on the green in the international championship qualifying.
Well, I mean, he was he was five two up actually.
Liam Davies first ranking quarter final at the English Open, Liam Pollard qualified for the all nine open with two four nil wins over Paul Morris and Ben Wollaston.
This is only my third season following Snooker, and my appreciation for the talent keeps getting deeper.
I'm eager to see more of the display of grit and determination these relatively young players have shown us early in the season.
I mean, some some good standout names there.
Obviously, we've known about Stan Moody and Liam Pollan for a while.
Liam Davey's, as I say, is looking really, really strong.
Aaron Hill, I rate very highly.
It's good to see to be honest, I'm not as bothered about where they're from from The UK and Ireland there, but it's just good to see young players coming through because all sport needs to renew itself and refresh itself and younger talent will do that.
The qualifying is tough, know, it's tough to come through, I know there's a lot of discussion about the way that most of the tournaments have now gone back to this tiered system.
What I will say about that is that I do find it quite amusing some of the complaints, because it is an absolute fact that a lot of players complained about the flat draw system.
They said oh it's not right that I should play Mark Selby or Judd Trump or Mark Williams in the first round.
That's not that that's not fair.
But now it's gone to the tiered system, apparently that's not fair either.
It does come down to winning matches, you know, the class of '92, they're called that because they turned pro in 1992, and again it's a fact.
They had to win 10 matches to qualify for the venues.
10 matches from the Norbrek in Blackpool to get through.
Now it's it's also true, you know, a lot of people that were playing there were not anywhere near the standard until now, but it still took a hell of a lot of doing to get through to qualify, to get to a venue.
10 matches, not two, ten.
So it's always been tough.
It's always been about survival of the fittest.
That's what sports about.
And I think the issue, and I've said this before, tiered draws, flat draws, that's well, let's let's deal with that first.
好的。
Okay.
Where do players think prize money comes from?
Do they think it falls from the sky or someone shakes at a magic money tree?
Prize money comes from commercial revenue.
Where does commercial revenue come from?
It comes from sponsorship, broadcasters, it comes from promoters, and it comes from ticket revenue.
Overwhelmingly they're the main places it comes from.
So those constituencies have to be satisfied with the format of a tournament.
That's why the top 16 are held over to the crucible.
It would be absolutely ludicrous to make Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump and Mark Selby and all those guys start out at Pons four, George, that's not Pons four, it's English Institute of Sport to try and qualify for the crucible.
That will be the end of the BBC showing it.
Alright?
So that's the real world.
Okay?
Prize money comes from commercial revenue, so the commercial partners have to be satisfied with the formats.
We had two ranking events.
This is a fact that went because of this.
The Shanghai Masters, they tried to impose the old World Snooker Tour administration, tried to impose a flat draw on that tournament.
They didn't want it, and they said, oh, well, from now on, we're gonna have an invitation event.
And it's a very successful one and a very popular one, but lower end players lost a ranking event because of that.
The second was the Wuxi Classic, where not only was it a flat draw, but this is back in 2014, Ding Junwei was made to qualify.
Now Ding is not even from China, he's from Wuxi City itself.
Okay?
Where the event is played, they made him go to Barnsley, and this was a time when there weren't that many many other sort of top Chinese players, hardly any actually.
And of course, he lost five nil.
I think Oliver Brown beat him.
Anyway, that was the end of that tournament.
Ding wasn't in it and it went.
So these are the real world considerations for the format of tournaments.
It's not about what players want, frankly.
It's about what the people putting the money in one, and they have to be satisfied that they have the elements that they want.
And let's be honest, for most people putting on a tournament, and you'd be the same, and I'd be the same if we're to promote a tournament, we want the best known names there because guess what?
We wanna sell tickets to the tournament.
We want people to tune in and watch.
And overwhelmingly we know the players that they want to tune in and watch.
That's why suddenly Ronnie O'Sullivan is back in the frame for the champion of champions when originally the world seniors, you know, wasn't on the list, suddenly it's on the list, but of course it is.
If I was promoting the tournament, I'd want him in there as well.
So that's one thing and that that's sort of we don't hear anywhere near enough of that when when we hear about this tiered draw versus flat draw.
All it seems to be is some player from somewhere in the rankings just complaining about it without any context or explanation about why there is this difference.
So that's the first thing.
But the second thing, and I think this is a more credible issue, is the current ranking system.
We were told the prize money system is what's needed for the flat draw system and you can argue that that's right, although not every event was flat draw.
But now almost none of them are.
I don't see our prize money system can remain and I think that there are moves definitely to change it because there are obviously certain players who, you know, if they win one match, say in the UK championship, they're on 15,000 ranking points, someone else is up to win five matches to get the same amount.
Doesn't seem right, so that is a more credible issue for discussion and I'm sure that discussion will continue.
I think the last email is from John Crossley, if I've missed any I apologize, but as I say I was swamped by the competition entries.
You'll notice there isn't a competition this week, but, you know, there may be one in the future.
John says, what is the correct way of addressing Chinese players in interviews?
I may be showing my ignorance here, but as I understood it, Chinese names are family name followed by given name, and presumably, would be normal to address them using their given name in an interview.
Xingtong, Yizi, or Bingyu, not Zhao, Gu, or Cheng.
But in all interviews with Chinese players I've heard recently, the interviewer calls them by their family name.
Yeah, you're right.
I've heard for example Hazel when she interviews Ding Junwei, call him Junwei because that as you say is his sort of given name and then Ding is his family name.
So you're quite right, it is the other way around in China and you know, went to China, they would call me Hendon David because again for them it was the other way around.
So yeah, I guess it's something that people doing interviews maybe need to think about, but anyway, you brought this to our attention and we thank you for it.
I'm recording this on a Saturday, so if you've sent in any emails after Saturday afternoon then they will be read out in the next episode.
But anyway, thank you for listening, and as I say, a big week ahead in Shenzhen.
I think it promises to be an interesting tournament just because of well, it'd be interesting anyway, obviously, but just because of the way the season started, there's no sort of narrative yet really other than it's been a bit disparate and we've seen not any different winners, but maybe surprising winners.
So be fascinated to see, you know, just who comes out on top and it's also an important time of the season as we approach the UK Challenge because everyone wants to be in the top 16 for that.
So coming through the pack winning 177,000 ranking points, you know, would help on that regard.
Karen Wilson is interested in, you know, he's about 90,000 points behind on the world championship race, the top 16, that's taking the points off that are coming off this season.
So 90,000 points, you kinda gotta win a tournament.
Now, course, Karen Wilson could do that any day now, but that's a narrative to follow.
Certainly, if we get let's say we get to the masters and he's still outside that 16, pressure's gonna grow a bit on him to to get in.
Otherwise, he'll be qualifying.
And and that's happened, of course, in the past to Ding Jim Wee.
It's happened to Neil Robertson.
We will see.
There's a lot of time left this season.
Quite a busy period.
I say that it's actually two weeks with nothing on after the Shenzhen open, but then we've got Northern Ireland, we've got the international championship, Chamini champions, and so on and so on.
UK championship, big event to come.

Thanks again for everyone who entered the competition and enjoy the week if you can watch it.
Let us know if you're going to Shenzhen.
Obviously, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
And as ever, may the best player win.
That's it.
