Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

Welcome to the Snooker Scene Podcast.

Speaker 0

I'm Dave Hendon.

Speaker 0

I just wanted to record a short episode giving a few thoughts on Mark Allen's interview earlier today on TNT Sports where he said that he was considering retiring from Snooker.

Speaker 0

He returned to action at the Northern Ireland Open, of course, his home event.

Speaker 0

In Belfast, he played his best friend in the sport, Jordan Brown.

Speaker 0

Jordan beat him four two.

Speaker 0

Clearly, Allen wasn't at the races.

Speaker 0

He lacked sharpness, which you would expect having, you know, not played competitively for for six months.

Speaker 0

He actually said if he hadn't drawn Jordan, he probably wouldn't have played because he's withdrawn from various events in early season.

Speaker 0

And he was very emotional in the interview with Rachel Casey in the studio.

Speaker 0

First thing to say actually about that, I thought she did a fantastic job.

Speaker 0

She asked the right questions, but she displayed empathy and didn't sort of push things and didn't at no point was trying to sort of make great telly.

Speaker 0

It was all about actually thinking about Mark and and and full credit to her for that.

Speaker 0

Full credit to him also for coming in and speaking, you know, which must have been difficult, particularly, of course, having lost the match and it wasn't quite what he was hoping for.

Speaker 0

But he said that he's been struggling for the last few months.

Speaker 0

He didn't provide details about what's been going on off the table, and it's none of our business, is it?

Speaker 0

But clearly, things have have not been good for him.

Speaker 0

And he came back and he played.

Speaker 0

He didn't win.

Speaker 0

And he said that he played his first professional match at the Waterfront Hall back in 2005.

Speaker 0

He was...

Speaker 0

The old Northern Ireland trophy, he was invited in as a wildcard as a new professional from Northern Ireland.

Speaker 0

And he said, maybe that's the place to end it.

Speaker 0

Now, of course, that's not definitive.

Speaker 0

That's what he said today.

Speaker 0

He's entitled, of course, to change his mind, and he'll have a bit of time now because his next tournament is scheduled to be the UK championship.

Speaker 0

So, obviously, that's end November.

Speaker 0

It's about six weeks from now, five or six weeks.

Speaker 0

So he's got time to to consider things.

Speaker 0

But I wanted to give a few thoughts.

Speaker 0

I mean, it was it was a difficult interview to watch.

Speaker 0

He was clearly very upset.

Speaker 0

You you don't like to see that with anybody, any player or or or anybody, full stop.

Speaker 0

Snooker is a sport.

Speaker 0

It's also kind of a family.

Speaker 0

People know one another.

Speaker 0

And we all know know with families, you know, you can fall out with people and argue with people.

Speaker 0

But when one of your own is suffering, you have to be there for them, and the sport will be.

Speaker 0

The WPB said I know I've already been in contact with Mark during the summer.

Speaker 0

There is...

Speaker 0

There are resources there that he can call on.

Speaker 0

They work with mental health specialists.

Speaker 0

So there are people who can help away from the spotlight.

Speaker 0

But I do think Snooker still is slightly in denial about the mental toll that the sport can take on players.

Speaker 0

We we obsess about results.

Speaker 0

And, of course, you know, Mark obviously had that miss black in the in the world championship semifinal.

Speaker 0

It was noticeable, actually, he did miss a couple of quite similar pops, same ball, the black to left corner in this match, but maybe that was more down just to to general rustiness than anything.

Speaker 0

But we talk about results and we talk about performances, but all these players have lives as well.

Speaker 0

I mean, Jordan Brown was talking about...

Speaker 0

He'd had a family bereavement.

Speaker 0

That's true of other players.

Speaker 0

People have things going on that can add to the pressure they're already under trying to perform in a very public sport.

Speaker 0

It's a sport, of course, it's on television.

Speaker 0

It's played in front of spectators.

Speaker 0

You know, in all of our in all of our professions and and jobs, we've made mistakes, but they're usually not public.

Speaker 0

They're usually not available to watch on YouTube.

Speaker 0

And so whatever...

Speaker 0

With regards to Miss In The Black, whatever part that's played in how he's been feeling, obviously, that is always kind of there in the background.

Speaker 0

And it may be that that has exacerbated what what is already happening off table.

Speaker 0

I don't wanna speculate because I I don't...

Speaker 0

I'm not aware of what those issues are, and they are private.

Speaker 0

And there are things, obviously, that that are in his life that he is looking to deal with.

Speaker 0

But when you hear him say, I'm just trying to survive, you know, that's quite a stark thing to hear from a a snooker player.

Speaker 0

You know, ultimately, it is only a game, and it's an entertainment, and we all enjoy it.

Speaker 0

But we need to think maybe a bit more about the human beings involved.

Speaker 0

There's a lot of things said, you know, on podcasts, in social media, on television, from pundits, from others as well about the players.

Speaker 0

And and that's all part of sport, but ultimately, there are human beings who are playing these sports.

Speaker 0

And snooker is, I think, specifically a sport because you kinda have to be in your own head to play it.

Speaker 0

You have to go deep into your own kinda mental reserves, and it must take a toll.

Speaker 0

We've seen it with players.

Speaker 0

We've seen it with Ronnie O'Sullivan throughout his career.

Speaker 0

More recently, we've seen it with Mark Selby, you know, who's who's been, you know, working with a doctor on his problems.

Speaker 0

And there's others as well.

Speaker 0

There's others we maybe don't know about.

Speaker 0

And I can guarantee there are others who've suffered from these problems and have just kind of done the old thing of sort of pushing them down and trying to get past it, whereas actually maybe reaching out know, would have been a better outcome.

Speaker 0

I mean, years ago, there was a player, not a well known one, but there was a player called Roger Garrity.

Speaker 0

He was playing in one of the sky ranking events.

Speaker 0

I think it was the International Open.

Speaker 0

And he was due to play, let's say, it was Tuesday afternoon.

Speaker 0

Didn't show up.

Speaker 0

Just didn't show up for the match.

Speaker 0

And he just walked out the venue.

Speaker 0

You know, he he just was overwhelmed by the pressure of having to perform and just had to get away.

Speaker 0

And, of course, this was sort of pre mobile phones, and it wasn't so easy to to track him down.

Speaker 0

Actually sky at you to put out a kind of appeal.

Speaker 0

Thankfully, he did turn up.

Speaker 0

But this is nothing new.

Speaker 0

You know, the pressures are there, and I and I do feel in the social media age, they have become more pronounced because people can sort of get a piece of you, it seems, four seven.

Speaker 0

It's quite hard sometimes maybe to find that inner peace that everybody needs whatever they're doing, whether they're playing snooker on television or whatever job, whatever role they're playing in society.

Speaker 0

You know, everybody needs a bit of personal time.

Speaker 0

And it may be now that Mark will take that, but there is potentially a practical solution that that could help.

Speaker 0

There is, in extreme circumstances, the option to freeze a player's ranking so that they can take time out and then come back and their ranking has not been affected.

Speaker 0

Now that's happened before for players with physical conditions and injuries, and maybe we need to look at mental health in the same way.

Speaker 0

Now this is just I'm just putting this out there as is potential option whereby he could take a prolonged absence, but not have to worry about his ranking.

Speaker 0

Of course, that will impact other players.

Speaker 0

I understand that.

Speaker 0

So it's a decision that would be taken lightly.

Speaker 0

But I think anyone who heard the interview, and it's, of course, available to watch online, will see someone who's played a big part in Snooker for the last twenty years.

Speaker 0

He's been one of the top players for the last two decades.

Speaker 0

He's won a lot of tournaments.

Speaker 0

He's entertained a lot of people.

Speaker 0

He's played his part as well, getting the game in the headlines.

Speaker 0

He's kinda said various things, and it's all part of the show.

Speaker 0

We've seen someone who has done all of that and is clearly struggling, and and I think anyone watching it would feel...

Speaker 0

If they could help him, they would.

Speaker 0

So maybe the way of helping him is to say, if you wanna take time off, we'll freeze your ranking.

Speaker 0

When you come back, you know, you won't have suffered.

Speaker 0

It's not like you'll be going back to the qualifiers.

Speaker 0

那是……

It was...

Speaker 0

And Jordan, of course, had to go in the studio afterwards and and and again spoke well.

Speaker 0

You know, they're great friends.

Speaker 0

He wouldn't have enjoyed what was going on around that match.

Speaker 0

But because he's got his own issues in terms of the world rankings and and, you know, ultimately about putting food on the table, it can be tough, of course, down that area of the ranking list.

Speaker 0

So it was...

Speaker 0

As I say, we were wondering what was gonna happen, and what we got was defeat for Mark Allen.

Speaker 0

But then the interview, which I think, as I say, does point to the fact that in this sport, and it's true, I'm sure, in a lot of sports, but an individual sport that is so solitary can be very mentally taxing.

Speaker 0

And I think sometimes maybe we're all guilty, and I put myself in this category as well of overlooking that.

Speaker 0

You know, we look at, oh, he's he's out of form or he needs a win or or whatever, and we don't always think about actually the toll that he's taken on the human being.

Speaker 0

As I say, there is help available, and I hope that Mark takes some time to look after himself.

Speaker 0

And I hope he does come back and and plays again.

Speaker 0

But that's up to him, of course, and he will take the time to think about things and just try and get himself right.

Speaker 0

And, hopefully, we will see him at the UK championship, where I'm sure he'll get a lot of support because that's the other thing, and he referenced this himself.

Speaker 0

Players have contacted him.

Speaker 0

People in the sport have wished him well, and why wouldn't you?

Speaker 0

You know, it's basic empathy, which had, believe it or not, does still exist.

Speaker 0

And, you know, as I say, it it...

Speaker 0

It's something that we can't just sort of say, oh, this is a a one off event.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Someone's a bit down.

Speaker 0

It's not that.

Speaker 0

It's more serious than that, and it's something that I think a lot of players actually watching the interview would recognize.

Speaker 0

You know, it's tough out there.

Speaker 0

They're they're expected to perform for us, and it takes its toll, and we've seen that today.

Speaker 0

So I just wanted to record those thoughts.

Speaker 0

As I said, there there is potentially the option to freeze his ranking.

Speaker 0

If he wants to take a prolonged absence, it won't cost him in terms of his ranking position, and that may be a solution.

Speaker 0

Not one that will be taken lightly, but that could be on the table.

Speaker 0

We will see.

Speaker 0

The tournament continues, and we look forward.

Speaker 0

It's a it's a very interesting event.

Speaker 0

You know, the only three top 16 players made it through to the last 32.

Speaker 0

We'll see how the week pans out.

Speaker 0

But thank you anyway for for listening to to that, and we'll be back next week.
