Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

Welcome to Stories podcast.

Speaker 0

I'm your host, Amanda Weldon.

Speaker 0

Today's story is called the apple of contentment, an original story written for you by Howard Pyle, adapted for audio by Daniel Hinds.

Speaker 0

Hang tight through this quick ad break, and then we'll start the show.

Speaker 0

The apple of contentment.

Speaker 0

Once upon a time, there lived a woman with her three daughters.

Speaker 0

Two of them belonged to her, and they had her constant scowl and sharp voice.

Speaker 0

But the third, the oldest, was her stepdaughter, brought to her by a husband who passed too soon and left her with three girls to raise.

Speaker 0

The woman loved her own two daughters as dear as her own heart, but couldn't find anything but anger towards her oldest daughter, who was named Christine.

Speaker 0

So the first sister and the second sister dressed in their finest clothes every day and sat in the sun doing nothing, just as though they had been born ladies, both of them.

Speaker 0

But as for Christine, she dressed in nothing but rags and had to drive the geese to the hills in the morning and home again in the evening so that they might feed on the young grass all day and grow fat while she babysat them.

Speaker 0

It was meant to be an unpleasant job to keep Christine busy, but she brought books tucked in her skirts and spent the days quietly reading and dreaming of moving to one of the sweet fairy worlds in her stories.

Speaker 0

And while the first sister and the second sister had white bread and butter besides and as much fresh milk as they could drink, Christine had to eat cheese rinds and bread crusts and had hardly enough of them to keep hunger from whispering in her ear.

Speaker 0

And this was how the churn clacked in that house until it wasn't.

Speaker 0

One morning, Christine started off to the hills with her flock of geese, and in her hands, she carried her books.

Speaker 0

So she went along the dusty road until, by and by, she came to a place where a bridge crossed the brook.

Speaker 0

And what should she see there but a little red cap with a silver bell at the point of it hanging from the alder branch?

Speaker 0

It was such a nice, pretty little red cap that Christine thought that she would take it home with her because she had never seen the likes of it in all her life before.

Speaker 0

So she put it in her pocket, and then off she went with her geese again.

Speaker 0

But she had hardly gone a handful of paces when she heard a voice calling to her.

Speaker 0

Christine?

Speaker 0

Christine?

Speaker 0

She looked, and who should she see but a strange strange little man with a great head as big as a cabbage and little legs as thin as young radishes.

Speaker 0

What do you want?

Speaker 0

Said Christine as the little man scampered over.

Speaker 0

I need my hat if you would, he said.

Speaker 0

His voice was bright and almost magical in its way.

Speaker 0

Well, of course, Christine asked, why if it was his hat, it was hanging in a bush?

Speaker 0

Well, I was fishing by the brook over yonder when a puff of wind blew my cap into the water, and I just hung it up to dry.

Speaker 0

That was all that there was about it.

Speaker 0

And now would you please give it back to me?

Speaker 0

I could give you a reward.

Speaker 0

Christine smiled at the little man.

Speaker 0

Oh, it's your hat.

Speaker 0

You can have it for free.

Speaker 0

The little man shook his head.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

He said.

Speaker 0

When someone offers you a reward, you should take it.

Speaker 0

And when you already have the hat, well, you should negotiate.

Speaker 0

I should?

Speaker 0

When dealing with one of the fairy folk, you should, the little man said.

Speaker 0

Usually, I'd scam you out of your gold, but you're too young to have any gold and you seem kind besides.

Speaker 0

So let me give you a lesson.

Speaker 0

I'll offer you 3 coins, and you say, no.

Speaker 0

That's not enough.

Speaker 0

A fairy?

Speaker 0

Now that he mentioned it, of course, he was.

Speaker 0

Christine realized that she hadn't seen it right away because he hadn't wanted her to.

Speaker 0

Now that he decided to help her, it was like a switch was flipped.

Speaker 0

She could see he was indeed an impish sort of fairy with a big head and small legs and a strange shimmering suit in the old timey fashion.

Speaker 0

Now I'll give you 3 coins for my hat.

Speaker 0

That's not enough.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

It's my hat.

Speaker 0

You said to say that.

Speaker 0

Play along now, girl, he whispered.

Speaker 0

Christine laughed.

Speaker 0

5 coins or I'll keep it.

Speaker 0

I haven't got 5, said the little man with a wink.

Speaker 0

Then what else would you give me for this nice dear little cap?

Speaker 0

See, Christine, said the little man.

Speaker 0

I will give you this for the cap.

Speaker 0

And he showed her something in his hand that looked just like a bean, only it was as black as a lump of coal.

Speaker 0

行。

Yes.

Speaker 0

好。

Good.

Speaker 0

But what is that?

Speaker 0

Said Christine.

Speaker 0

That, said the little man, is a seed from the apple of contentment.

Speaker 0

What is contentment?

Speaker 0

She asked, not recognizing the long word.

Speaker 0

Ah, it's a state of happiness and satisfaction, said the little man.

Speaker 0

Content is being happy with enough, being full and warm and loved.

Speaker 0

That sounds nice, said Christine.

Speaker 0

Plant it, said the man, and from it will grow a tree, and from the tree, an apple.

Speaker 0

Everybody in the world who sees the apple will long for it, but nobody in the world can pluck it but you.

Speaker 0

It will always be food and drink to you when you are hungry, and warm clothes on your back when you are cold.

Speaker 0

And better, as soon as you pluck it from the tree, another as good will grow in its place.

Speaker 0

Now will you give me my hat?

Speaker 0

Yes, Christine said.

Speaker 0

And the man smiled and gave Christine the seed, and she gave the little man his cap again.

Speaker 0

He put the cap on his head and, poof, away he was gone, as suddenly as the light of a candle when you blow it out.

Speaker 0

So Christine took the seed home with her and planted it outside the window of her room.

Speaker 0

The next morning, when she looked out the window, she saw a beautiful tree.

Speaker 0

And on the tree hung an apple that shone in the sun as though it were pure gold.

Speaker 0

Then she went to the tree and plucked the apple as easily as though it were a loose berry.

Speaker 0

And as soon as she had plucked it, another just as good grew in its place.

Speaker 0

Being hungry, she ate it and thought that she had never eaten anything as good.

Speaker 0

It tasted like pancakes with honey and butter and syrup.

Speaker 0

By and by, the oldest sister came out of the house and looked around.

Speaker 0

But when she saw the beautiful tree with the golden apple hanging from it, you can guess how she stared.

Speaker 0

Right away, she began to wish and wish for the apple as she had never wished for anything in her life.

Speaker 0

I will just pluck it, said she, and no one will be the wiser for it.

Speaker 0

But that was easier said than done.

Speaker 0

She reached and reached, but she might as well have been reaching for the moon.

Speaker 0

She climbed and climbed, but she might as well have climbed for the sun.

Speaker 0

The tree wouldn't let her have it and grew and stretched away from her.

Speaker 0

At last, she had to give up trying for it and went away in a bad mood, kicking at the dirt.

Speaker 0

After a while came the second sister, and when she saw the golden apple, she wanted it just as much as the first had done.

Speaker 0

But to want and to get are very different things, as she soon found, and she was no more able to get it than her sister had been.

Speaker 0

Last of all came the mother, and she also tried to pluck the apple, but it was no use.

Speaker 0

She had no more luck with her trying than her daughter's.

Speaker 0

All that the three could do was to stand under the tree and look at the apple and wish for it and wish for it.

Speaker 0

As for Christine, she had to do nothing but to pluck an apple whenever she wanted it.

Speaker 0

Was she hungry?

Speaker 0

There was the apple hanging in the tree for her.

Speaker 0

Was she thirsty?

Speaker 0

There was the apple.

Speaker 0

Cold?

Speaker 0

There was the apple.

Speaker 0

So you see, she was the happiest girl between all the seven hills that stand at the ends of the earth.

Speaker 0

Because nobody in the world can have more than contentment, and that was what the apple brought her.

Speaker 0

Her sisters saw her picket, of course, and were mad with jealousy, but there was nothing they could do.

Speaker 0

If they tried to make her share, the apple turned to mud in their mouths.

Speaker 0

This continued until one day, the king heard the story of the strange apple while out hunting.

Speaker 0

Since he was nearby, he decided to pay the tree a visit.

Speaker 0

When they got to the little cottage with the tree, he saw the single apple and wanted it.

Speaker 0

He had one of his men go and knock on the door, asking if they could buy it.

Speaker 0

Knowing they'd never be able to pick it, the mother asked for a bag of gold from them and said, go ahead, but you have to pick it yourselves.

Speaker 0

So the servant gave her the bag of gold, and then he tried to pick the apple.

Speaker 0

First, he reached for it, and then he climbed for it, and then he shook the limb.

Speaker 0

But it was no use for him to try.

Speaker 0

He couldn't get close.

Speaker 0

At last, the servant had to go back to the king.

Speaker 0

The apple was there, he said, and the woman had sold it.

Speaker 0

But try and try as he would, he could no more get it than he could get the little stars in the sky.

Speaker 0

Then the king told the steward to go and get it for him.

Speaker 0

But the steward, though he was a tall man and a strong man, could no more pluck the apple than the servant.

Speaker 0

So he had to go back to the king with an empty fist.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

He couldn't get it either.

Speaker 0

Then the king himself went.

Speaker 0

He knew that he could pluck it.

Speaker 0

Of course, he could.

Speaker 0

Well, he tried and tried, but nothing came of his trying, and he had to ride away at last without having had so much as a smell of the apple.

Speaker 0

When he got home, the king still couldn't forget the apple.

Speaker 0

He thought and dreamed and wished for it, and all his castle and treasure couldn't replace it.

Speaker 0

Finally, he called for his wise men who told him they had heard of a girl who could pick the apple, the oldest daughter who lived in the cottage.

Speaker 0

When the king heard this, he was very glad.

Speaker 0

He had his horse saddled, and he and his court rode away, and so came at last to the cottage where Christine lived.

Speaker 0

There, they found the mother and the younger sisters because Christine was away on the hills with her geese.

Speaker 0

The king took off his hat and made a fine bow.

Speaker 0

The wise man at home had told him this and that.

Speaker 0

Now to which one of her daughters did the apple tree belong?

Speaker 0

The king wanted to know.

Speaker 0

Oh, it's my youngest daughter who owns the tree, said the woman.

Speaker 0

So good, said the steward.

Speaker 0

Then if the youngest daughter would pluck the apple for him, he would take her home and marry her and make a queen of her.

Speaker 0

Only let her get it for him without delay.

Speaker 0

The mother balked at that.

Speaker 0

Well, that will never do.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

Is the girl supposed to climb the apple tree before the king and all of the court?

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

Let the king go home, and she will bring the apple to him all in good time.

Speaker 0

That was what she said to cover up the fact that her daughter couldn't pick the apple.

Speaker 0

The king agreed and went back to his castle.

Speaker 0

The mother called Christine and the geese back from the hills and had her pick the apple, then sent her back again.

Speaker 0

She gave the apple to her youngest daughter and sent her to the castle.

Speaker 0

Wrap, tap, tap.

Speaker 0

She knocked at the door.

Speaker 0

Have you brought the apple for the king?

Speaker 0

Oh, yes.

Speaker 0

I have brought it.

Speaker 0

Here it is, all wrapped up in a fine napkin.

Speaker 0

After that, they did not let her stand outside the door till her toes were cold, I can tell you.

Speaker 0

As soon as she had come to the king, she opened her napkin.

Speaker 0

Believe me or not, as you please all the same, I tell you that there was nothing in the napkin but a hard round stone.

Speaker 0

When the king saw only a stone, he was so angry that he stamped like a rabbit and told them to kick the girl out of the castle.

Speaker 0

So they did, and she went home with a flea in her ear.

Speaker 0

Then the king sent his steward to the house where Christine and her sisters lived.

Speaker 0

I've come to find out if you have any other daughters.

Speaker 0

Well, yes, I do have another daughter, the woman said.

Speaker 0

And to tell you the truth, it's actually her tree.

Speaker 0

Just go home again, and the girl will fetch the apple in a little while.

Speaker 0

As soon as the steward had gone, they sent to the hills for Christine again.

Speaker 0

你看。

Look.

Speaker 0

You must pluck the apple for your second sister to take to the king, and if she does not do that, we will throw you into the well.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

So Christine had to pluck it and gave it to the second sister who wrapped it up in a napkin and set off for the king's house.

Speaker 0

But she fared no better than the other, for when she opened the napkin, there was nothing in it but a lump of mud.

Speaker 0

So they packed her home again with her apron to her crying eyes.

Speaker 0

After a while, the king's steward came to the house again.

Speaker 0

Have you no other daughter than these two?

Speaker 0

Well, yes.

Speaker 0

There's another one, but she's a poor ragged thing of no account and fit for nothing in the world but to tend to the geese.

Speaker 0

Where is she?

Speaker 0

Oh, well, she's up on the hills now tending her flock.

Speaker 0

Can I see her?

Speaker 0

I mean, yes, you can, but she's nothing but a poor goose girl.

Speaker 0

That's all very good, but I would like to see her because that is what the king has sent me here for.

Speaker 0

So there was nothing to do but send to the hills for Christine.

Speaker 0

After a while, she came, and the steward asked her if she could pluck the apple yonder for the king.

Speaker 0

Well, yes.

Speaker 0

I can do that easily enough.

Speaker 0

After a while, she came, and the steward asked her, hello.

Speaker 0

Can you pluck the apple yonder for the king?

Speaker 0

Sure, said Christine.

Speaker 0

I can do that easily enough.

Speaker 0

So she reached and picked it as though it had been nothing but a raspberry on a bush.

Speaker 0

Then the steward took off his hat and gave her a low bow in spite of her ragged dress because he saw that she was the one for whom they had been looking for all this time.

So Christine slipped the golden apple into her pocket, and then she and the steward set off to the king's house together.

When they arrived, everyone began to titter and laugh behind the palms of their hands to see what a poor, ragged goose girl the steward had brought home with him.

But for that, the steward cared not a wrap, and neither did Christine.

Speaker 0

Have you brought the apple?

Speaker 0

Said the king as soon as Christine had come before him.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Here it is, Christine said, and thrust her hand into her pocket and brought it forth.

Then the king took a great bite of it, and as soon as he had done so, he looked at Christine and thought that he had never seen such a pretty girl.

As for her rags, he minded them no more than one minds the spots on a cherry.

Speaker 0

That was because he had eaten the apple of contentment, and he could see her for the kind, hardworking woman she was.

Speaker 0

And Christine could see the king was kind and fair.

She moved into a room at the castle, and the next morning, she woke to her apple tree outside her new window, and she smiled.

And they lived happily ever after.
