The Rolling Roll.

从前，在高高的山上，住着一对年迈的夫妇。

Once upon a time, high in the mountains, there lived a little old couple.

老妇人叫Momo，因为她的孙子孙女都这么叫她，而老爷爷则叫Papa，原因同样如此。

The old woman was called Momo because that's what her grandkids called her, and the old man was called Papa for the very same reason.

我说的高高的山上，真的是字面意思。

Now when I say high in the mountains, I really mean it.

山脚下有个小镇，那地方也已经很高了，但跟Momo和Papa的住处比起来，根本不算什么。

There was a little town at the base of the mountain, and even that was pretty high, but it was nothing compared to Momo and Papa's place.

他们把小屋建在山峰旁，要到那里得走一条漫长而蜿蜒的小路。

They built their cottage right up against the peak, so you had to take a long and windy trail to get there.

这是一座温馨的小屋，倾斜的结构能挡住积雪，并靠一台老旧的铁炉取暖，他们就在炉子上做饭。

It was a snug little house, angled to keep off the snow and kept warm by an old iron stove that they cooked their meals on.

大约每月一次，他们的孩子或孙子会骑着骡子上来，给他们送更多的木柴和食物。

Once a month or so, their kids or grandkids would make the trek up on their mules to deliver more firewood and food.

他们总是说：‘Momo，Papa，你们为什么不下山搬到镇上去呢？’

They'd always say, Momo, papa, why don't you come move down to the town?

Momo会说：‘我们喜欢彼此相伴的宁静。’

And Momo would say, we like to be alone together.

Of course, added papa.

You can't forget the view.

And it was true.

From their little house on the peak of the mountain, they could see for miles and miles in every direction.

白天，你能看到远处的冰川湖泊在阳光下闪闪发光；夜晚，则能看到山脚下小镇灯火点点，宛如圣诞夜般璀璨。

During the day, you could see the distant glacial lakes glittering in the sun, and at night, you could see the little town at the foot of the mountain twinkling like Christmas.

这是一幅美丽的景色，他们非常喜爱自己的小屋。

It was a beautiful view, and they loved their house.

但节假日过后，当所有孩子和孙辈都离开，只剩下他们两人在雪地中时，日子便渐渐变得孤单起来。

But after the holidays, when all their kids and grandkids left and it was just them in the snow, it got a little lonely.

于是有一天早上，当爸爸外出在林间散步，炉子温暖明亮时，莫莫心想，她可以烤点好吃的，等爸爸回来时给他暖暖身子。

So one morning, when papa was out for a walk in the woods and the oven was warm and bright, Momo thought she would bake him a treat to warm him up when he came back inside.

她假期期间已经用掉了大部分烘焙材料，但还刚好剩下足够的糖和面粉，可以做一份爸爸最爱的大面包卷。

She had used most of her baking supplies over the holidays, but she had just enough sugar and flour for one of papa's favorite giant rolls.

于是她拿出碗，把所有材料混合在一起，然后让面团稍微静置一会儿，再放进烤箱。

So she got out the bowl, mixed all the ingredients, and then let it rest for just a bit before popping it in the oven.

很快，他们的小屋里便弥漫着新鲜面包、糖分，还有一丝肉桂的香气。

Soon, their little home smelled like fresh bread and sugar and just a hint of cinnamon.

哦，这一定会很棒，莫莫说。

Oh, it's going to be a good one, Momo said.

不久，她把烤盘从烤箱里拿出来，发现果然如此。

And soon, she pulled it from the oven to see she was right.

这个面包卷完美极了。

The roll was perfect.

金黄色的外皮，中间裹着肉桂和糖的漩涡。

Golden brown with a swirl of cinnamon and sugar throughout the middle.

看起来真美味，她说。

Looks delicious, she said.

现在只需要等它凉一凉。

Now just have to let it cool.

她把面包卷放在窗台上，然后开始打扫小屋。

She set the roll on the window and went about cleaning up the cabin.

很快，她就忙完了，爸爸也回家了。

Soon, she was done, and papa was home.

他一边说，一边拍掉靴子上的雪。

He said, shaking the snow off his boots.

外面真冷。

Cold out there.

但哇，这里面真香。

But, woah, smells good in here.

我给你做了一个卷饼，”莫莫说，并指向窗户。

I made you a roll, said Momo, and she pointed at the window.

但她不知道的是，山上还飘荡着一丝节日魔法。

But what she didn't know was that there was a little holiday magic still blowing around the mountain.

一个顽皮的小精灵看到了温暖的卷饼，觉得这正是恶作剧的绝佳地点。

And a mischievous little spirit saw the warm role and thought it would be just the place to play a little prank.

于是，它毫不犹豫地钻进了卷饼里，静静等待。

So without a second thought, the little spirit popped into the role and waited.

紧接着，当爸爸拿着叉子和刀走近时，卷饼突然自己从窗户里翻了出去，还发出一阵笑声。

Then a second later, when papa approached with a fork and knife, the roll flipped itself out the window with a laugh.

我现在就是那个卷饼了，”精灵说，已经开始滚下山坡。

I'm the roll now, said the spirit, already starting to tumble down the hill.

你要是能抓到我就算你厉害。

Catch me if you can.

莫莫和爸爸瞪大眼睛互相对视。

Momo and papa looked at each other with wide eyes.

住在高山之上，他们不是第一次遇到精灵，但以前从未有过精灵偷走卷饼的情况。

Living way up in the mountains, it wasn't their first encounter with the spirits, but they'd never stolen a roll before.

追上它！

After it, cried papa.

他们冲出房子，去追那个卷饼。

They ran out of the house and after the roll.

不幸的是，由于身处山顶，山坡陡峭，而且坡道很长。

Unfortunately, being on the top of the mountain, the hill was steep, and there was a lot of it.

卷饼一边滚下山，一边哈哈大笑。

The roll laughed as it bounced down the mountain.

它本以为自己会一直滚到山底，但很快便撞上了一堵毛茸茸的墙。

It thought for sure it would roll all the way to the bottom, but soon it ran right into a big fuzzy wall.

嘿。

Hey.

你这是什么意思？

What's the big idea?

墙说。

Said the wall.

滚子抬头一看，发现这堵毛茸茸的墙原来是一只大母熊正踏着雪前行。

The roll looked up and saw the fuzzy wall was actually a big mother bear trundling through the snow.

还没等滚子反应过来，熊就用嘴把它叼了起来。

Before the roll could react, the bear snatched it up in her mouth.

哦，熊说，可不常有美味的食物自己撞到我身上来。

Oh, the bear said, not often that a delicious meal runs right into you.

等等，滚子说。

Wait, said the roll.

在你吃我之前，我给你念一首小诗。

Before you eat me, I have a little rhyme for you.

我不喜欢诗。

I don't like rhymes.

我喜欢卷饼，”熊说。

I like rolls, said the bear.

那至少先听一下这个。

Well, give this one a chance first.

好吧。

Okay.

但得快点。

But it better be quick.

卷饼在雪地上翻了个身，用清脆高亢的声音说道。

The roll flipped over in the snow and said in a high clear voice.

我是一个卷饼。

I'm a roll.

我是一个面包卷。

I'm a roll.

从面粉罐里刮出来，从玉米桶里扫出来，揉成面团，煎到熟透。

Scraped from the flour tin, swept from the corn bin, mixed to a bun, and fried till I'm done.

我逃开了莫莫和爸爸。

I ran from Momo and Papa too.

现在你盯着我看，我也要从你这儿逃走。

And now that you're looking, I'll run away from you.

当熊还在努力琢磨这首押韵诗时，面包卷已经开始了它的本色表演，咕噜咕噜地滚下山去。

And while the bear was trying to puzzle out the rhyme, the roll was already doing its namesake and rolling, rolling, rolling down the mountain.

嘿。

Hey.

回来，

Come back,

熊妈妈喊道。

called the mama bear.

她转过身，开始追着面包卷跑。

She turned and started chasing the roll.

谁都不能吃我的面包卷。

No one eats my roll.

谁都不能吃我的面包卷！

No one eats my roll, hollered papa just behind the bear.

那个卷轴继续滚下山坡，在雪地里弹跳着前进，一边滚一边喊着‘哇哦’。

The roll continued down the mountain, bouncing through the snow and yelling, wee, as it went.

它越滚越快，直到熊、莫莫和爸爸都远远地落在了雪地后方。

It picked up more and more speed until the bear, Momo, and Papa were all the way in the snowy distance.

就在它以为自己会一路滚进镇子时，它猛地撞上了一堆瘦削的灰色皮毛。

And just when it thought it would roll all the way into town, it slammed into a big pile of lean gray fur.

‘哎哟’，狼群中的一只狼叫道。

Yow, cried one of the wolves in the pack.

谁在扔雪球？

Who's throwing snowballs?

不是我，另一只狼说。

Not me, said another wolf.

嗯，有什么东西打到我了。

Well, something hit me.

Oh, sorry about that, said the roll.

I'm just on my way down the mountain.

If you'd all just step aside, I'll be on my way.

But now the wolves were sniffing the air, their sensitive noses catching the sugar and cinnamon in the roll.

Why the big rush?

Said the largest wolf, a big guy with a silver muzzle and iron gray fur.

你来得正是时候，可以吃晚饭了。

You're just in time for dinner.

Oh, what are we having?

Asked the roll.

哦，我以为我们会吃你，”狼说，接着它们都更靠近了。

Oh, I thought we'd have you, said the wolf, and they all prowled closer.

等等，馅饼说。

Wait, said the roll.

Before you eat me, I have a little rhyme I wanna say for you.

I don't like rhymes, growled the wolf.

I'm a roll scraped from the flour tin, swept from the corn bin, mixed to a bun, and fried till I'm done.

我逃开了莫莫和爸爸，也甩掉了熊，现在也要甩掉你们。

I ran from Momo and Papa too, and I ditched the bear, and I'll ditch you.

狼扑向面包卷，但慢了半拍。

The wolf snapped at the roll, but it was a second too slow.

面包卷一声欢呼，又沿着山坡滚走了。

With a little whoop and cheer, the roll was off down the mountain again.

狼群愤怒地嚎叫着，紧追不舍，从不放过到嘴的猎物。

The wolves howled in rage and tore off after it, never ones to let a meal get away.

追啊，它们一边喊一边沿着山坡飞奔下去。

After it, they cried, loping down the mountain.

进我肚子里来，熊在后面追着喊道。

Get in my belly, cried the bear, coming down behind them.

没人能吃我的面包卷，爸爸紧跟在熊后面大喊。

No one eats my roll, hollered papa just behind the bear.

没人能吃爸爸的面包卷，妈妈跟在爸爸后面附和道。

No one eats papa's roll, agreed Momo just behind papa.

面包卷飞驰下山，撞上雪堆，扬起一大片蓬松的白色雪雾。

The roll flew down the mountain careening off snowbanks and sending up big, fluffy white clouds of spray.

它滚过一些滑雪者，撞上一个跳台，华丽地腾空而起，然后再次落下，只弹跳了两下，便以更快的速度继续滚动。

It rolled past some skiers and hit a jump, launching magnificently into the air and then coming down again, bouncing just twice and rolling on faster than ever.

它滚得如此之快，以至于最终撞上小兔子时，两者都摔倒在雪地里。

It got going so fast that when it finally hit the little rabbit, they were both sent sprawling into the snow.

Hey, said the rabbit.

The rabbit hopped closer and smelled deeper.

You really smell like a roll.

我不是早说了吗，面包卷说。

Told you, said the roll.

但为了确认，我想我还是咬一口吧，兔子说，已经有点流口水了。

But to be sure, I think I'd better take a bite, said the rabbit, already drooling just a little.

哦，等等。

Oh, wait.

First, listen to this, said the roll.

And with that, the roll bounced over the rabbit and started down the hill again.

我会抓到你的！

I'll get you, yelled the rabbit hopping on after it.

你是我们的！

You're ours, howled the wolves, loping down the mountain.

到我肚子里来吧！

Get in my belly, cried the bear coming down behind them.

谁也别想吃我的卷饼！

No one eats my roll, hollered papa just behind the bear.

谁也别想吃爸爸的卷饼！

No one eats papa's roll, agreed Momo just behind papa.

但这时卷饼已经快到山脚了，它再也滚不了多远了。

But now the roll was almost at the bottom of the mountain, and it wouldn't be able to roll much further.

它开始减速，四处寻找藏身之处，这时看见一只聪明的狐狸在树林间穿梭。

It was starting to lose speed and looking for a place to hide when it saw a clever fox darting among the trees.

它没有试图拦下卷饼，只是紧贴着它奔跑。

It didn't try to stop the roll, just ran alongside it.

你这么快要去哪儿啊，小面团？

Where are you going so fast, little roll?

狐狸问。

The fox asked.

我正在被追，面团说。

I'm being chased, the roll said.

And if they catch me, they'll eat me.

哦，天哪。

Oh, no.

这太糟糕了，狐狸说。

That's terrible, said the fox.

要我帮你躲起来吗？

Want me to hide you?

Yes, said the roll.

That would be wonderful.

好的，狐狸说。

Okay, said the fox.

快点。

Quick.

跳进我嘴里，我就能直接从他们面前走过去。

Jump in my mouth, and I'll walk right past them.

他们根本不会想到要检查。

They'll never even think to check.

狐狸说得好像这是个绝妙的主意，小面包不由得同意了。

The fox said it like it was a great idea, and the roll couldn't help but agree.

好吧。

Okay.

张大嘴。

Open wide.

我来了。

Here I come.

狐狸张开嘴，面包卷蹦了进去。

And the fox opened his mouth and the roll bounced on in.

我安全了。

I'm safe.

走吧，它说。

Let's go, it said.

咕噜。

Gulp.

狐狸猛地一咬一吞，吃掉了面包卷，然后舔了舔嘴唇。

With one mighty chomp and swallow, the fox ate the bun and licked his lips.

兔子、狼、熊、莫莫和爸爸都来找过，但始终没找到那个面包卷。

The rabbit and wolves and bear and Momo and papa all came looking, but they never did find that role.

至少到那时，莫莫和爸爸已经离小镇很近了，于是他们直接买了些日用品，搭了辆马车返回山上。

At least by that point, Momo and Papa were so close to town, they just went and got some groceries and a carriage ride back up the mountain.

第二天，莫莫给他们俩做了新的面包卷，他们趁热吃掉了，不敢把面包卷放在窗台上晾凉。

And the next day, Momo made them both new roles, and they ate them steaming hot, not daring to set them on the window to cool.

它们美味极了。

And they were delicious.
