Speaker 0

Animal Jam.

Speaker 0

Once upon a time on a nice sunny afternoon, a musician brought his guitar into the forest.

Speaker 0

His name was Dylan, and he loved to play among the trees and the birdsong and the happy buzz of the insects.

Speaker 0

He'd hike down a trail until he found a nice sunny rock, and then he'd make himself comfortable, guitar on his lap.

Speaker 0

It was his special time for peace and a little relaxation.

Speaker 0

What kind of song are you in the mood for today?

Speaker 0

He'd ask the forest, and then he'd listen closely.

Speaker 0

If the wind blew, then he'd play a breezy song.

Speaker 0

If it was overcast and rainy, he'd play something in a minor key, slow and sad.

Speaker 0

When the sun was shining bright, he'd play something fast and lively.

Speaker 0

And that day, the sun beamed down on the cheerful singer in a golden ray.

Speaker 0

Ah, something happy then, Dylan said, and then he began to strum.

Speaker 0

His fingers bounced over the strings, and the music rang out, sunny as the day itself.

Speaker 0

It echoed through the trees and rolled down the ravines and billowed over boulders.

Speaker 0

The guitar rang through the forest, and soon enough, Dylan found that he had attracted an audience.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

Play another one, said a great gray wolf slipping from the shadows of the trees.

Speaker 0

I love that music.

Speaker 0

The musician froze, his last note still ringing in the open air.

Speaker 0

His mouth opened to speak and didn't.

Speaker 0

He just sat there for a moment, lips parted in stunned surprise.

Speaker 0

What's the matter?

Speaker 0

Asked the wolf.

Speaker 0

You, you need some help?

Speaker 0

Help?

Speaker 0

Dylan asked, gulping.

Speaker 0

The wolf was shaggy and monstrous, his mouth full of moon white fangs.

Speaker 0

He could swallow Dylan in one bite if he wanted.

Speaker 0

Well, yeah, help, the wolf said.

Speaker 0

I'm a pretty good musician myself.

Speaker 0

Seems like you're out here recruiting for your band.

Speaker 0

Well, I've always wanted to be a rock star.

Speaker 0

You won't find someone better than me anywhere in the forest.

Speaker 0

And I, I wouldn't suggest looking.

Speaker 0

You know what I mean?

Speaker 0

He added with a toothy sneer.

Speaker 0

Dylan's mind whirled.

Speaker 0

He didn't want a band, and he certainly didn't want one with a terrifying giant wolf, but he also realized upsetting that same giant wolf would be a very bad idea.

Speaker 0

Well, sure.

Speaker 0

You can join the band, he said finally, striking on an idea.

Speaker 0

But you have to audition, of course.

Speaker 0

Oh, an audition?

Speaker 0

Asked the wolf.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

What do I have to do?

Speaker 0

Well, what I need is a drummer, Dylan said.

Speaker 0

You take these sticks here and and you start banging on all these rocks and logs.

Speaker 0

You just go as loud and as long as you can.

Speaker 0

If you do a good job, you're in the band, baby.

Speaker 0

The wolf howled, and he grabbed the sticks.

Speaker 0

Let's jam.

Speaker 0

He began to drum on the rocks and logs and his own hairy feet.

Speaker 0

It wasn't particularly musical, but it was certainly loud, and Dylan was able to use it as a distraction to sneak away.

Speaker 0

He ran through the forest, clutching his guitar to his chest like a protective parent.

Speaker 0

He didn't stop running until the sounds of the wolf drumming were lost in the distance.

Speaker 0

That was a close one, he said.

Speaker 0

I thought I was gonna have to choose between having a bad band or beating a bad meal.

Speaker 0

He found a cozy stump and settled himself, shaking out his jitters.

Speaker 0

Soon, his guitar was back in his lap, the sweet music drifting through the forest.

Speaker 0

It was a placid tone, peaceful and gentle, to help calm Dylan's own frayed nerves.

Speaker 0

Unfortunately, it was the bears' favorite kind of music.

Speaker 1

Oh, hey there,

Speaker 0

she said, somersaulting out of the forest like a burly brown boulder.

Speaker 1

Oh, I heard you playing music.

Speaker 0

Dylan replied, barely believing his morning.

Speaker 0

First, a wolf, and now the biggest bear he'd ever seen.

Speaker 0

The animal's paws were each as big as frying pans, and her mouth could swallow a ham whole.

Speaker 1

I've always wanted to be in a band, the bear said.

Speaker 1

I can see it now touring the country, performing for crowds, my name in lights.

Speaker 0

She motioned broadly.

Speaker 0

“B e a r,熊。”

B e a r, bear.

Speaker 0

That's a that's a dream alright, Dylan said.

Speaker 0

Personally, he liked playing music just for himself and his friends, but he wasn't about to say that to this furry giant.

Speaker 1

So can I join your band, or am I going to be disappointed?

Speaker 0

The bear said, rubbing her belly.

Speaker 0

Keep in mind, I get hungry when I'm disappointed.

Speaker 0

Dylan gulped.

Speaker 0

Well, what do you play?

Speaker 1

I play the baboons,

Speaker 0

她说。

she said.

Speaker 0

The the baboons?

Speaker 0

Dylan said.

Speaker 0

Of of course, the baboons.

Speaker 0

Well, you'll have to audition first.

Speaker 0

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 0

Of course, said the bear.

Speaker 1

Auditioning like a real band.

Speaker 1

I'm making the big time now.

Speaker 0

That's right, Dylan said.

Speaker 0

So turn around and give it your best shot.

Speaker 0

Make sure it's long and loud so I have plenty to judge you by.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Here we go,

Speaker 0

said the bear.

Speaker 0

Then she bellowed.

Speaker 0

Dylan cracked away as the bear boomed her base, filling the forest like a girthy earthquake.

Speaker 0

As soon as he was away, Dylan sprinted until his lungs heaved and his legs burned.

Speaker 0

He sprinted until he couldn't hear the bear at all, and then he sprinted a little further just to be safe.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Finally, Dylan fell on a log, panting for breath and clutching at a stitch in his side.

Speaker 0

He made sure his guitar was safe, pulling free a few leaves, and then sat back resting.

Speaker 0

He considered calling it a day and leaving the woods, but he was too stubborn.

Speaker 0

For years, he had been coming and playing here, and he had never once had any trouble with the animals.

Speaker 0

He couldn't let one bad day get to him.

Speaker 0

I'll play a song once more through, he said to himself.

Speaker 0

But this time, I'll play it quietly.

Speaker 0

He took his guitar up gently like it was made of glass and ran his fingers over the strings, barely a spider's touch.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

Are you starting a band?

Speaker 0

Can I be a part of your band?

Speaker 0

I'd really like to be in a band.

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

Said a fox, prancing out of the forest.

Speaker 0

I'm an amazing musician.

Speaker 0

All myself says so.

Speaker 0

Dylan struck a sour chord and groaned.

Speaker 0

又来?

Again?

Speaker 0

He thought.

Speaker 0

So what do you think?

Speaker 0

Do you need another player or, like, maybe a lead?

Speaker 0

Because I don't know.

Speaker 0

I just, I think I could be the lead.

Speaker 0

Like, I think I, like, have it in me.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Like, it's, like, maybe my destiny or something.

Speaker 0

Like, what do you think?

Speaker 0

What do you think?

Speaker 0

The fox said, tail twitching.

Speaker 0

Okay then, the musician said, resigned to his day.

Speaker 0

What do you play then?

Speaker 0

So I play these, like, whistles, or it's kind of like a flute thing.

Speaker 0

It's like whistle flute, said the fox, pulling out a wooden tube and some grass.

Speaker 0

I play it so well that, like, everyone loves it.

Speaker 0

Like, I I used to play for my parents.

Speaker 0

I mean, I'd play, like, all day and all night and, like, most of the afternoon too, just like whistle, whistle, flute, flute, whistle, flute.

Speaker 0

And they'd say, hey.

Speaker 0

Can you maybe whistle flute somewhere else?

Speaker 0

And I'd say, Like, on a stage?

Speaker 0

And they said, yes.

Speaker 0

Anywhere but here.

Speaker 0

So I'm trying to find a band to join because they're just, like, so supportive of me and my whistling slash, like, fluting.

Speaker 0

And I just know that I'm gonna be the lead in a band, and everyone is gonna love it.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

Okay, Dylan said.

Speaker 0

Well, you'll have to audition, so let's hear what you got.

Speaker 0

Dylan sat back waiting for the fox to play.

Speaker 0

She raised her instrument to her mouth, but before she could blow, the great shaggy wolf burst out of the trees.

Speaker 0

He had his drumsticks in his paws and an angry snarl on his face.

Speaker 0

Hey.

Speaker 0

What's the big idea?

Speaker 0

He growled.

Speaker 0

I thought I was the one joining your band, and now you're auditioning this fox.

Speaker 0

What is a fox anyway but a little orange wolf?

Speaker 0

Not as good as the real thing.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But, like, what is a wolf but a big lousy fox?

Speaker 0

走开。

Get lost.

Speaker 0

I'm in the band now, and we're gonna be called the whistle bunch.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

The foxtrot or or the foxy whistlers, foxy flautists.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

But it's my band.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

We're the big bad wolf and his little pigs, said the wolf.

Speaker 0

No, roared the bear, tumbling from the trees.

Speaker 1

We're the paw pals.

Speaker 0

Who's this?

Speaker 0

Asked the wolf.

Speaker 0

Oh, are you another, like, wannabe?

Speaker 0

Said the fox.

Speaker 0

Oh, stop, roared Dylan, loud as he could to be heard over the growls and barks.

Speaker 0

Just stop.

Speaker 0

The animals all turned to look at him now, their faces angry.

Speaker 0

The wolf's teeth gleamed huge, the bear's muzzle as big as a cave, and even the fox had a row of gleaming needles.

Speaker 0

So you had us all audition, said the wolf, a hungry look seeping into his eyes.

Speaker 0

Woah.

Speaker 0

Like, which one made the band?

Speaker 0

Rumbled the bear, rubbing her ample belly.

Speaker 1

Who is it?

Speaker 0

Well, stuttered Dylan.

Speaker 0

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

Just, like, tell us who it is, said the fox.

Speaker 0

It's it's, it's all of you.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

It's all of you.

Speaker 0

You all made the band.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

They all asked together.

Speaker 0

Introducing wolf on percussion.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

Thanks, said the wolf.

Speaker 0

And next, we have Bear on bass.

Speaker 1

Oh, I'm deeply honored.

Speaker 1

You get it?

Speaker 1

Deeply because of the bass.

Speaker 0

And last but never least, we have fox on the whistle slash flute.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I'm like the most amazing whistler slash flautist, and you're all so lucky to have me.

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 0

I'm finally fulfilling my whistle star destiny.

This is gonna be amazing.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Now there's only one last thing you all have to do.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

What's that?

Speaker 0

Asked the wolf.

Speaker 0

You just have to audition one more time, but altogether this time.

Speaker 0

Are you ready?

Speaker 1

Ready.

Speaker 0

They said together.

Speaker 0

Jam, Dylan said and threw up his arms.

Speaker 0

The wolf started pounding and the bear started babooming and the fox let loose some whistles, and together, they started to play.

Speaker 0

Pretty quickly, they found their groove, jamming hard with their eyes closed and paws flying.

Speaker 0

As soon as that happened, Dylan's feet were flying too, flying across the forest floor, running home just as fast as he could.

Speaker 0

He had survived the auditions, but he was pretty sure a bad review would mean he was dinner, so he thought it was more sensible to just find a new place to play.

Speaker 0

And you know what?

Speaker 0

The animals didn't mind.

Speaker 0

They played together all that day and every day after.

Speaker 0

And if you walk into the right woods at the right time, you may still hear them playing.

Speaker 0

Their wild music bang, baboom, whistling through the forest.

Speaker 0

And with the right audition, they may even let you join.

Speaker 0

The end.

Speaker 0

Today's story, Animal Jam, was an adaptation of an Aesop's fable written for you by Daniel Hines and performed for you by me, Amanda Weldon.
