Hello, best friends.
Welcome to another episode of to boot off the bus.
The long form version of to boot on the bus.
Me and my public transport public transport podcast.
Maybe need to clarify actually that it was a bus because I had a meeting with someone yesterday, like really cool publication that I'm gonna be like working with and they were like, yeah, like when we found out about you we were like, she does this podcast on the train and I was like, the train?
I just let them I just let them say it, but the bus, the public bus.
Thank you so much for the love on the previous episode.
Girlies were eating that up on YouTube.
I loved my return to YouTube, so much fun and I'm so glad other people are enjoying it.
Sticking on track with my one episode a month goal of The Long Form Podcast.
I actually did plan on having two but I filmed one that was so bad that like multiple times throughout filming it I was like, should we just scrap this?
And like, I'm all for powering through.
Powered through to like an hour, it was it was an hour and a bit that episode unedited and I was just like, it got deleted this morning.
Was like, that's not surfaced in YouTube ever, but one a month was the goal and we're on track so this will go out in February, so happy February.
I was gonna say happy Valentine's Day because it is Valentine's Day tomorrow but this definitely will be up way after that so hope everyone has a wild Valentine's.
Valentine's plans this year looking like me and my two flatmates having dinner and a movie.
We all all did, that's actually a complete lie on I say, would say we all did dry January, I live with two girls, we all started Dry January and then got really into like the sober activities, like Kat, Kat who edits these podcasts, hey Kat, I hope everyone loved Kat's edits in the last podcast, one day turned to me like probably seven days into January and was like here, I think we should start something called sober cinema where we watch a film and buy like a fun sober drink and I was like, so we watch a film then?
So we watch a film?
Us, like, doing Dry January, not that we like only watch films when we've had a drink, like, we just watch films anyway, but when we were all like consciously doing Dry January, it really made us like make more of an effort of like doing things together sober, even though we do that anyway, but it was fun.
We did that once.
I made us all a curry and we watched, what is that film called?
Is that something girls?
It's about like the nanny who looks after the young girl who's like so neglected by her mom and they're just, like, she's just, like, healing her inner child and they're on the roundabout, they're on the teacups.
What is that called?
Uptown Girls.
对。
Yeah.
We watched Uptown Girls sober cinema.
So we're we're kind of doing a rendition of that, for Valentine's Day.
I'm gonna cook everyone a meal and we'll watch a film.
Gorgeous.
And also actually third wheeling my sister and her boyfriend because they're coming to visit this weekend.
So crazy Valentine's.
My sister messages me what three days before Valentine's Day and she's like where in London can me and Jack book a meal for Valentine's Day?
In brackets sexy Valentine's meal and I was like girl I don't think you're getting anywhere booked three days before Valentine's Day Valentine's weekend in London.
You're getting a takeaway at most.
So I actually need to find out where she's booked.
But yeah, hope everyone has a great February.
Also, mad respect to anyone who did actually manage to do Dry January.
This is coming across like major alcoholism from me, not at all, good relationship with alcohol, but two out of three flatmates did not manage Dry January and Kat's actually the only one that did.
Me and Becca both broke it and yeah, I broke it thirteen days in.
What a shame.
A podcast, I would generally say, is like the only place where I speak about myself, like, personally now.
I don't really do like vlogs or anything on Tiktok anymore.
My Tiktok used to be so personal, like way to overshare.
I think back to the time I once vlogged a first date and put it on Tiktok.
Mental illness, mental illness, why the fuck did I do that?
That's actually also how I came out to most people.
I vlogged like my first ever lesbian first date, this was years ago, put that on Tiktok, and that's how it came out to most people.
That was a crazy overshare.
I don't at all agree with that now.
Fast forward like two years, you had me and George and Theresa, Taboo on the Tube episode slagging off monetizing your dating life culture online.
We've grown since then, but what I was going to say with that, sorry there, is how much I don't overshare or like talk about myself like personally really online anymore, not intentionally, just like my content on Tiktok has gone very like educational social commentary route, so like there's not as much space for me to like chat about myself now, so I really like that I get to do that in this podcast that we can have like a girly catch up chat because I haven't even posted a YouTube vlog in ages so yeah this is the time for us to catch up and I'll give you like my media recs of the week and we can catch up with what we've been listening, watching, reading.
Oh my god, let me show you these, might have to overlay an image.
I basically work, I work for, I do like PR social media for a fashion designer two days a week.
Actually leaving that job, so if anyone wants that job, that's actually getting advertised, not for any bad reasons, just going full time content, but we host a lot of crafty events and things at work.
And this week we hosted a bookmark making and book swap, so genuinely at work I got to just make bookmarks as examples for the event.
So, in terms of what I'm consuming, it's being marked by like really wholesome bookmarks.
I'm going to overlay some photos of the event, it was so cute.
Basically, I came up with this idea and I was like good one there, like, well done you.
We were like coming up with like what type of like Gallantine's crafty event we could do.
Gallantine's used like loosely, anyone can obviously come to these events.
Yeah, so the event was like come make a bookmark, had like so many crafty materials, a million rhinestones and bring a book so that everyone could like swap a book with someone there and there was such a good array of books there.
I was raging because I forgot to bring one, like I was gonna bring a book to swap.
I spoke at this in my last episode, I started reading the book Valencia, I got halfway through just didn't enjoy it, stopped reading it and I was like oh perfect I'll bring that and swap it because someone would snatch that up.
It's a it's a great book I just didn't enjoy it but I forgot to bring a book so I didn't get to swap one.
But someone did bring the pink line and I really want that but I have that on hold at the library so it's fine.
But anyway, sorry, these are the bookmarks that I made, I'll overlay a photo of them.
And then the books that they're in, first of all my non fiction read at the moment no, fiction, I always get mixed up.
My fiction book is I'll Tell You When I'm Home by Hala Allian.
It's a story of surrogacy, a story of war, a story of waiting.
The publishing house actually sent me this book.
They're a really phenomenal publishing house in London.
They were established to amplify bold original voices from The Middle East, North Africa and the wider Disappora, so really focused on representing underrepresented voices in Western publishing.
And this book is by a Palestinian American writer and poet, which reflects the main character of the book.
是的。
Yeah.
A bit from the blurb, Hala is not just awaiting news from the surrogate, she's also holding her breath as Palestine in Lebanon.
Her estranged homelands are under fire.
So it's told from like multiple perspectives in the character's life, like it's every single, every single paragraph is only, I would say half a page to a page long at most before you're changing perspective again.
She's talking through accounts of war, accounts of surrogacy, accounts of relationship, like, what's happened to her family, through, like, different time periods in her life and also talking about other stories simultaneously.
It's hard to describe without just reading it and I'm really, really enjoying it.
I know I slagged off Valencia in my last episode because I didn't like how it was not slagged off, I didn't slag off at all, great book.
I didn't like how it was written, but I really like how this is written, like you're you're dipping into like multiple things at once.
Really didn't sell that book very well but it's a phenomenal book, very important as well and the publisher knows it's great.
And then my non fiction read at the minute is A Place of Our Own by June Thomas which discusses six spaces that shaped queer women's culture.
This is in fact queer history month.
I would have read this anyway, there's a lot about, there's a whole first chapter on lesbian, like, gay bars, my favorite niche topic.
Gay bars, what I did my dissertation on, if you've had read any, not read, if you've listened to any of my podcasts you know that that's when the special interest comes through.
But really enjoying this, I've only read the first chapter but loving this.
From the library as well, of course.
Inspiring people to get their library cards.
Multiple people have told me that like I've inspired them to get them, I've inspired them to get a library card and it's just one of the best things ever.
Huge on the local library.
Huge on making your own bookmarks, just so fun.
Yeah, this one actually, this one is a photo of me and my best friend on it and it says, I cut out bits from magazines and it says go to the theatre, museums, see new art, go.
Saying that, not the been theatre or museums much recently, that's something I really want to prioritise more in February.
I've got like a list of exhibitions I want to go to.
I'm going to one at the Tate actually tonight.
Me and my friend Dara are going.
I've got like a lovely Irish friendship group going on here, there's there's a real fusion between Irish, well just Celtic people, like the Irish and Scottish, I feel very at home with Irish people and I've got a lovely group going with me and three Irish friends and Naomi actually as well who is English but she slots in perfectly.
Me and Dara are going to an exhibition at the Tate tonight which one of our friends is like showing at, it's like a girls in film photography type of exhibition.
But I actually have a list of exhibitions to go to in February.
One of the exhibitions I'm dying to go to is Nan Goldin's The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, it's a photography exhibition.
It's an exhibition reflecting gender, intimacy and power widely regarded as Goldin's magnum opus.
I don't actually know what that means but obviously just a great series of photos.
I actually turned up to this exhibition a couple weeks ago because like, like, week it opened I was dying to go, like, love a photography exhibition, turned up, closed on a Sunday, didn't check that.
So, I just like, I don't think I was hands on the glass, I don't think I would have done that but I was like up against the glass just looking at it through the window and then went to the Soho photographers gallery instead, which was really, really good.
Really, really recommend doing that.
Got really cool photo booth pictures there, loved all the exhibitions there, but this is on my goal for February so next time I do a podcast I hopefully can have a review on this.
I don't think anything inspires me more than going to like a an exhibition specifically a photo exhibition, that's when like some of my best work comes out of that because I came home and made a zine after doing that and it went triple platinum on Substack and Instagram.
I'm my favorite zine I've made.
So, need to do that more this month.
In terms of other media, I've been listening to a lot of, live Pink Floyd.
I didn't realize that was all on Apple Music, I am an Apple Music gal.
I don't know if you could listen to like live sets so I've just been listening to a lot of live Pink Floyd.
Also recently discovered Annabelle Dinda, again, Kat is becoming so prominent in these episodes, Kat Kat got me into Annabelle Dinda, she found her through Tiktok and her song The Hand is really, really great.
And then another thing I've been consuming is online lectures.
I miss education so much.
I've been out of education since like June, July, graduated last summer and I miss education so bloody much.
I'm so jealous of people in education.
So, what I've been doing is online lectures.
There's Gresham College which specialises in like accessible education in London, they do public lectures and you can go to them in person, I think they're in Holborn, but they also post them online and you can watch them on YouTube or you can like watch them live online and I watched their lecture this week, will you be AI's pet?
I like listened to half of it like a podcast and then finished watching it in a cafe, like I listened to it on the way and I kept my notes in my research journal, this is my research for fun journal, which is meant to be things I researched just for fun and don't turn into episodes or like content, but I was having such fun and I really enjoyed this.
I was like I need to make a tour on the bus about this.
So the lecture was called Will You Be AI's Pet by Matt Jones.
I had such fun, the man's kids were in the audience, like, he's he's got photos of his dogs on the lecture, it was given, it was a real flashback to unique culture because obviously it's a lecture, not that my lecturer had her children in the audience, but she actually did include her dogs sometimes, I think.
Anyway, I have a real interest in, like AI, AI resistance, harms of AI, like, I've got like a sub interest in AI technology.
My interest in AI largely stemmed and I would say started from Laura Bates New Age of Sexism book, which I've had some like great opportunities to like talk and research about AI ever since.
I was doing some work with Everyone's Invited, is a charity, talking about what happened recently on Twitter where Grok, which is like like the generative AI AI assistant on Twitter, people began using it to like undress women and children, like photos being like grok, take this woman's top off, like change people were doing it to Holly Wheeler from Stranger Things, like replying to photos of children on Twitter and being like put Holly Wheeler in a bikini and this was enabled, this was allowed.
There's been restrictions now and there's more put in place now, but that should never have happened in the first place.
So I made a video about that with everyone's invited.
Anyway, I'm getting on a real tangent here.
All is to say there, sorry, I'm very interested in AI, so I very interested to do this lecture, and it's part of a three part series of lectures, I need to go back and listen to the other two.
But it doesn't really make sense, I would say, from the title alone of Will You Be AI's Pet?
But the description alone had me hooked and I'm just going to read it to you.
So the details are: this is the guy, the lecturer, I have two dogs.
They are happy, wagging their tails and reacting well when I come home from work.
They are well fed, have good health care, get daily exercise and have times of play.
They do not work or do chores.
But their long gone ancestors were wolves, howling at the moon, hunting, creating their packs, taking risks.
In this lecture, we will consider a similar domestication of humans by AI, pondering benefits as well as being clear about the costs.
He was quite unbiased, I'll say.
He left a lot of room for you to form your own thoughts and opinions as to where you want to stand in this like weighing up the costs and the benefits of becoming domesticated by AI essentially but it left a lot of room for me to like research and go on and really think about this which is why I want to do an episode about this because I think it's such an interesting way to illustrate how we as humans are being domesticated by AI and how deeply incorporated it is becoming in our lives and at what cost.
And it's a huge cost and I kind of want to discuss that today, because I live in quite an echo chamber where I think everyone is kind of like on the same wavelength as me, but I'm so aware that that's not true.
In my head we're all in this like fuck AI, like we all hate AI, like stop using it to replace people's jobs, like this is like killing our planet, this is killing us as a society, but this is I'm very aware, a minority viewpoint.
And you look around in cafes, where was I yes I was in a cafe yesterday, people just I just you just everyone screams Open AI, Open AI.
I used to sit in uni lectures and watch people in the library write their dissertations using AI.
I'm very aware I sit in the minority but the only way to start these conversations and get people talking about this is things like this.
And it's just cropping up more and more recently, like how embedded AI has become in our lives.
Like my other flatmate came home yesterday and she was talking about, it was a gay bar, I don't know which gay bar it was, but talking about how they'd used AI to make one of their club posters, like one of their event posters, instead of hiring like a local artist and this likely would have been a queer, trans, someone under the LGBTQIA umbrella who would have, like artists they would have reached out to.
I don't know if they have one they usually use, they're then replaced or just in general, but, like we're seeing how embedded this isn't taking like the jobs and the livelihoods away from everyone around us, it's actively damaging communities.
Even as well, like another example, my friend had just moved to London and we were talking about what you're to do for work here and he was saying how he was going to do some tutoring at local universities, like students, local students, and he was like, yeah, my USP is that I'm human and I was like this is crazy that your USP as a tutor is just the fact that you are human and you're not scraping information from other sources online as like a generative AI source.
And then I was like, wait, not even the tutor is going to be losing their jobs, but it's true, like a lot of the things people would have turned to previously humans for, for like academic help, is just being employed by AI.
And I just think it's crazy that we're in this time period so quickly in the advent of generative AI where your USP now as a tutor is that you are human.
So, timely episode.
I've done a good few episodes about AI and they've always landed well, so I'm excited to keep this conversation going.
And I just need to keep reminding myself that this is a minority viewpoint.
So anyway, the lecture like takeaway is that we're at risk of becoming AI's pets and by that we are essentially being tamed and domesticated as humans by AI.
And the explanation that the guy gave obviously firstly was talking about wolves, how they used to be very self sufficient like wild beings that like lived in the wild, did everything for themselves, they were not reliant upon humans or anyone else to do all these things for them.
And then you look at dogs who obviously evolved from wolves, these very self sufficient beings and now how pampered and catered to dogs are as pets to humans and they benefit from that obviously, massively, they have beds in high seas, they have like personalised medication, they get taken to the vets, they are fed, they, some dogs even have diets, like dogs are very pampered to beings, they are taken on walks everyday routinely by their owners, dogs live this very catered to lifestyle and that is intended for their benefit, for humans benefit as well in terms of the companionship they give to humans, but like, this is in the interest of the dog, realistically, when you look at how well treated they are.
The lecture paralleled that to us as humans with AI talking about how we as humans, obviously, if you look at humans even just ten years ago, we didn't lack the ability to do all these things for ourselves that AI is quickly replacing.
If you look at things like your tax return that it will do for you, it will write your emails, it will write your shopping list, will come up with a meal plan for you.
AI is slowly seeping in to be able to replace so many of the tasks that we do for ourselves.
And he was talking about how as we embed this into our lifestyle more, we are essentially being domesticated and tamed and caged by AI into no longer being able to do these things for ourselves, but it's spun as a benefit.
Spun is resourceful, as efficient as saving but I don't see it as a benefit here.
I see this as us being caged and domesticated by AI and factually we know it's decreasing our ability to do these things for ourselves.
If you're heavily reliant on say generative AI to do all these tasks for you, to write things for you, to think for you, to create for you, you are losing your cognitive abilities for, like, to retain these skills.
There's, this is obviously backed up, I would never spew untrue things.
I'll quote here from a Guardian article, By being served information rather than acquiring that knowledge through cognitive effort, the ability to critically analyse the meaning, impact, ethics, and accuracy of what you have learned is easily neglected in the wake of what appears to be a quick and perfect answer.
We are losing our ability to critically think.
Even studies have shown that use of AI for memory related tasks will lead to a decline in your own memory capacity.
It is actively diminishing our cognitive thinking skills, our creativity skills, our ability to problem solve when we delegate this to generative AI.
It's so easy to become reliant on it because it can do all these things, but in doing so you're losing those abilities within yourself and it's like a muscle if you don't train it, you'll lose it.
You need to use these skills to retain them and it's increasingly easy to not need to use these skills.
Yes, it might make you more efficient, it might seemingly improve your workload, your life, it's at the complete detriment of your own capacity and your own self and your own brain.
And I feel so radicalised this episode, like, I was doing this episode on the bus this morning and I was like, God, I feel like, not cultish, cultish is not the right word, but I was like, people around me might hear me and be like this girl has been radicalised, but that is because I just feel like I'm in such a minority that looks at this and is like, we need to actively stand against this.
And I know it's not a minority minority, but like, I know this isn't like a groupthink mentality where most people hold these opinions because I know most people are succumbing to generative AI, embedding AI in like as many practices of their life as possible and becoming reliant on these systems.
So what the guy was kind of arguing in the lecture was which type of pet do you want to become?
Because someone who is most reliant on AI and embeds this completely into their life, you are essentially the dog.
You are giving up your agency and your control and handing that over to AI to be like, do all these things for me, fuck being a wolf, long gone are those ancestors of being self sufficient and independent, I will happily be a dog and let you sort everything in my life for me so I can just play and sleep and relax.
Which I would say is quite an ignorant lifestyle and not one that necessarily benefits your capacity as a person.
But he was saying, look at all these other types of animals that you could be in terms of your stance.
Will you be a cat?
Cats are a lot more self sufficient.
They still go out, like find for themselves, can retain these skills of hunting essentially if you're an outdoor cat.
You know when people say like you own your dog but like if you have a cat like they own you, you retain a bit more power as a cat and then he was even like comparing to animals like birds, like fish.
It's a very interesting lecture and I don't just want to regurgitate all his information, but the crux of it was kind of talking about how caged we become as beings and how like that's kind of in our hand in terms of which pet you become.
I really love a metaphor.
Give me a metaphor, let's compare dogs and wolves to fucking people and AI.
But I think it's a very good way to look at it, not as a tool, but as something that is domesticating and suppressing us as humans.
It's not even just a case of looking at as well as you yourself as a pet, it's looking at okay, who's your owner?
If you become subservient to these technologies, to AI, who is it that is then in control of you?
And that is AI corporations, things like OpenAI, and look at who owns them.
If you fall to the hands of AI, you fall to the control of these individuals and these are not good people, these are not ethical, these are not moral, these are not good people.
Kind of what I was talking about with what Grok was doing on X and undressing women and children, AI systems are notoriously proven to be ingrained with social class racial biases and stereotypes which are actively refuelling these ideologies within society.
This is a lot of what Laura Batesy's book The New Age of Sexism discusses how embedded AI technology is with these social biases and how it is reinforcing sexism and misogyny within our society.
So, as well you have to look at the more reliant you become on these systems, the more you use these systems in your day to day, the more you rely on say generative AI to do all these tasks for you, you are relying on a system and if you want to look at it as an owner, a person with this mindset.
Examples here are like using AI to screen a load of candidates for a job.
You yourself might not think you are a misogynistic, sexist, say racist person, but are the systems you're relying on for these things trained or embedded with these biases already within them?
There's so many examples of gendered and racial biases embedded within systems like this.
Things like not outwardly screening for white people, but what they will do is filter and flag certain names that are tied to more minority individuals.
Things like sports seem more associated with women rather than men, screening and flagging things like netball over football.
Little things like this that you might not outwardly seek to be sexist or misogynistic, but are the systems you're using embedded within these ideologies, Embedded with these ideologies, sorry.
I feel like those examples I just gave there were quite basic, but all is to say, and I am quoting here, that as AI integrates into critical areas like hiring, healthcare and law enforcement, these biases can amplify societal inequalities.
Like, if these systems are embedded with occupational biases, gender biases, racial biases, societal biases, and we become more reliant on these systems and that's only going to amplify these within society, We are not moving forward by relying on this technology.
It's only amplifying these systems and unfortunately it's a lot of white men in control of these systems who then shape the narrative.
A lot of what I've discussed as well does seem to be the gendered, racial and minority harm caused by AI, specifically targeted towards women and minority groups, this lens of misogyny and sexism.
But then you've got the whole planetary impact as well, that by becoming unreliant on these systems you are actively feeling as well.
I always come back to the tweet that was saying like I want AI to do my laundry and my dishes so that I can do my art and my writing but AI is doing my art and my writing and I'm still doing my laundry and my dishes.
It's not even necessarily to say that it would be okay for AI to domesticate us and to take over so much of our abilities and tasks if it was to do our laundry and dishes, but at least let it be something practical so that we as humans can be fulfilled and supported by the arts and the humanities and the craft and the joy of things that should be human made and that do bring people joy in life because your art and your writing is bringing you more joy than doing your dishes.
And while we likely are going to get to a point where AI is doing your laundry and your dishes, the first thing that it's taken over is these types of tasks.
It's doing the writing, it's doing the art and it's putting people ultimately out of these jobs.
Exactly what I was talking about with clubs say now asking AI to make their club posters instead of giving that to someone in the community and paying an artist, as well as which the art created by AI is scraping and stealing from these artists themselves.
There's so many layers to this.
And by continuing to rely on and use AI to do your tasks, even if it is the ones that aren't necessarily your writing and your art, but it's your shopping list, it's your meal plan, it's your tax return.
We are fueling this system of digitized labor, which ultimately is still pushing other people out of jobs.
It's a very capitalistic world we're emerging into that only will create more of a divide between say the working and the elitist classes, because it's the working individuals that are the first to not be able to get jobs, the first to be pushed out of jobs, the first to see these opportunities slip from them into the hands of AI.
And it's the people with access to AI, it's the people with all these resources that are able to utilise that to propel themselves but also to generate new jobs.
There was a really interesting article I read about how there's like a new middle class forming of people with access to this technology and how potentially the only way forward is to generate equal access for everyone to AI resources because if not we are just going to see a wider disparity between people who have it and people who don't.
It kind of comes back to this digital divide which was spoken about a lot with like the advent of technology in terms of like iPads, screens, computers and the gap that would form between children who had access to computers, like digital literacy essentially, and children who didn't.
Children who have access to computers and smartphones, the benefits that stem from that are huge in terms of being digitally literate, being able to navigate computers, being able to type, being able to research and we saw a real gap between children who didn't have that and children who did.
So there's been like speculation and discussion that potentially the only way to begin fixing issues caused by AI is to ensure everyone has equal access to them so that the people who don't have access to it don't fall behind, but are we really that positions it as if it's a benefit to have access to all of this at your fingertips.
And that's to say it is a good thing to be able to navigate AI to do everything for you, to do all the jobs you don't want to do or to delegate your own tasks to for efficiency?
I don't think the answer at all lies in equal access, I think the answer lies in taking away access from everyone.
I don't at all dismiss that AI, I don't just mean generative AI, but all forms of AI can be used greatly if it's within a medical sphere.
If your AI is being used to cure cancer, if it's being used to support living of someone with additional needs or disabilities, say, There are so many benefits to that, but what I don't agree with is using it to replace things that we have the capacity to do ourselves.
I almost as well feel like I've completely sidelined the planetary environmental impact of AI as well.
Like, if you can't view not using this as a positive for society, look at it from the lens of like embedding these stereotypes and harms and refueling these in society.
You can't view it from that lens, don't use it for that.
If you can't view it from the lens of okay, I'm not going to use it because I don't want to lose my cognitive skills, don't want to reduce my memory, I don't want to reduce my creativity, at least look at it from the environmental impact that this is having on our planet.
It's so often focused on water, and I feel like, say you're in The UK and until you turn on your tap and it doesn't give you water, there's a lot of people who just won't care about the planetary impact because, as we see with most things, people don't care about them unless they are directly affecting them themselves.
And I feel like people don't understand the scale enough of the pollution and like, the water, like, there's always to focus on the water.
I feel like people don't understand enough the planetary environmental impacts of what AI is doing to care enough about not contributing to that.
There's a really, really great article which I'll overlay, called Construction and Consequences The Human Impacts of Artificial Intelligence Data Centres, which are just specifically looking at, like, the data centres powering artificial intelligence and the environmental impact they have.
And there's tons of there's tons of headlines under this, there's water, there's energy, there's public health, there's economy.
The water section alone is talking about as much as we need water, data centers are even thirstier It takes a lot of water to cool down all the computing that takes place in these buildings.
The bit that interested me the most, which I feel like if you can't take understanding of the scale of say like the water usage, the energy usage from data centres, look at it from the human aspect of the public's health.
And what it was talking about is how these data centres are often built in poorer rural black communities, and that's ultimately sacrificing those communities and individuals within those.
What we are seeing is higher rates of asthma, respiratory issues, even pollution related death, and a direct violation of the human right to clean air.
Look at the communities that the data centres harvesting this AI are actively harming and you could go as far as to say killing.
I feel like a great movie to illustrate this, to help you understand what is going on here, is Erin Brockovich.
This is a phenomenal film, Julia Roberts best work I will say, and I've got it up here, it's about a Californian energy corporation that has polluted a city's water supply network.
So all these families over years and years and years and years are like getting ill, mothers with cancer, children dying and there appears to be like no explanation for why this has happened.
But why it is happening is because they've been drinking and taking from very polluted water from these energy companies.
Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts, is the lawyer that gives these people justice.
But what we're seeing here is the same thing of AI data centers polluting, killing, causing illness to people around them and that's disproportionately harming black communities.
There's so much talk about water usage, water, water, water and I feel like a lot of people need to hear more human aspects and impacts like this to begin having an environmental care because I think, like I was saying, until you go into your kitchen and you can't have running water, people will not care.
And again, I feel like I sound so radicalised talking about this, but I know I'm not because there's a massive campaign going on right now called QuitGPT.
This campaign hasn't necessarily stemmed from what I've been talking about in terms of people realizing fuck we're like losing our abilities to like think for ourselves, like this has really taken over us personally.
This is stemming from ChatGPT's associations with ICE and Trump.
So reading from their website here, OpenAI, who own ChatGPT's, their president Greg Brockman and his wife donated 25,000,000 to MAGA in 2025.
They gave Trump 26 times more than any major AI company.
And ICE's resume screening tool is powered by OpenAI's GBT4.
They are spending $50,000,000 to prevent states from regulating AI so only Trump can.
So by taking a stance against ChatGPT by boycotting that, you are firming your position in standing against ICE and Trump because ChatGPT OpenAI is directly funding them.
This campaign came out in February, they have a really great Instagram which I'd urge you to follow.
And ultimately this is what they're valuing people to do, to boycott you.
You can go on their website and in ways to participate it says I commit to stop using ChatGPT, I cancelled my paid subscription or I'm sharing the boycott with friends on social media.
Hence what I'm doing here.
This episode for me was a case of sharing that metaphor, trying to get other people to start viewing AI from this lens, if not for the view personally of not wanting to be domesticated, if not for the environmental view, if not for the societal view, at least for this view, if you are a person who would say you stand against Trump, you stand against ICE, you stand against what's going on in Minneapolis right now, this is one of the things you can do.
I personally feel like environmentally, socially, personally, Trumply, any one of these reasons alone is enough to not support AI and actively, not just support these systems, but let them control you by using these systems, but if not alone enough, surely all together should be enough for you to want to not participate within this.
I do understand that there is somewhat a privilege in being able to cut it out of your life because it's to say I suppose you have the time or the resources otherwise that you don't need to rely on it to do things for you, at the same time you used to do that, you did do that, you're fully capable of doing that because this is how we operated up until now.
I do think we can all cut that out, but again, I'm in a minority and I know realistically we're not heading really any way towards a world where it's about to be cut out because look how much it's like fueling society and how much money it's generating.
So then it comes down to like the systemic things that need to happen which is a lot of what Laura Bates has discussed and how we are still very early days in the production and the systems, like the encoding of these systems, that we can still act to try and reduce the sexism and say, like, the misogyny ingrained in this.
But like environmentally, we already seem a bit fucked and that doesn't seem like it's going anywhere.
I think we're about to see an Erin Brockovich type scenario again where tons and tons of people start dying and getting ill and it's going to take a very great lawyer to give these people justice.
I'm going to wrap this episode up here because I feel like I've been talking for ages but I'm going to leave everything tagged in the description because like just let this episode be like a springboard of your own research.
I feel like this is something I want to reinstate more.
You should not be getting all your news from social media, from online.
Like I always just view social media as like a springboard, like I am really happy to be someone that introduces new concepts or breaks down concepts a bit more, but let that be a springboard for something you then go and do your research on.
I'll include a reading list and I'll link things like that in the box that you can go read.
Also shout out, I didn't mention Bestie Beth at the start of the episode, but my friend does the most insane, talented, sick press on nails that they design.
Just the best art I've ever seen and they gave me lots to wear in episodes because obviously my hands are so like on camera.
More so when I do the bust episodes you're kind of far away right now.
But I'll overlay a photo of these.
So thank you Beth for the nails, thank you for listening and I will see you soon and hopefully have some museum and gallery recs for you.
But yeah, thanks divas.
