Speaker 10

Sarah, you sure are smart.

Speaker 10

How did you know that much about me?

Speaker 2

Well, I definitely have had a lot of information, but I also grew up listening to a lot of your music and you know, you've been back in the studio working on a new album.

Speaker 2

So what can fans expect from your latest project?

Speaker 10

Well, I don't know if you're familiar with the Gather Gospel Group.

Speaker 10

I'm doing an album for them.

Speaker 10

It's kind of a R and B gospel record.

Speaker 10

Paul.

Speaker 10

And going to have, Vince Gill is gonna be on it, and awesome gospel singer David Phelps and Jason Crabb and a big star these days in Christian country radio.

Speaker 10

The Christian country radio scene is Zach Williams is gonna be on there and we'll probably get a couple more folks on it.

Speaker 10

It's really cool.

Speaker 10

We're about halfway done with it.

Speaker 10

I'm gonna be very happy with the end result.

Speaker 2

I can't wait to hear that, especially collaboration with Zach Williams.

Speaker 2

And talking about previous music, your album From Memphis to Muscle Shoals, that became your first number one album.

Speaker 2

What did that moment mean to you personally after, you know, a long career?

Speaker 10

Well, you know, it goes without saying it was very cool.

Speaker 10

It was, number one on the blues album chart.

Speaker 10

So, you know, I luckily had a big hit album on the blues, a hit album on gospel, a hit album on country.

Speaker 10

So I'm doing what I want to do.

Speaker 10

I never had a rock record, but I'd love to do one.

Speaker 10

And we, you know, we were talking about Zach Williams and Zach Williams is on the From Memphis to Muscle Shoals record.

Speaker 10

He's duetting with me on When a Man Loves a Woman.

Speaker 10

Yeah, we went down to Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals and cut 14, 1960s soul songs.

Speaker 10

I was talking to Dwight Yoakum, he asked me what I've been up to.

Speaker 10

And I told him, and he asked me if I'd cut a certain song.

Speaker 10

And I said, yes.

Speaker 10

And he asked if he could sing on it.

Speaker 10

And I went, are you kidding?

Speaker 10

Yeah.

Speaker 10

I sent the tracks out to Hollywood and he did a duet, went back and sang Harmony, he's a perfectionist.

Speaker 10

When I got it back, when he sent it back to me, thought, man, I need to call Tanga.

Speaker 10

And so I called Tanya and Wine Onna and Sammy Hagar and Zach Williams and Randy Houser, Sam Moore from the late great Sam Moore from Sam and Dave, Delbert McLint, a little Anthony from little Anthony and the Imperials just got 11 duets on and didn't, it wasn't planned to be a duet album.

Speaker 10

But anyway, it's a really cool record.

Speaker 2

Yeah, so many great collaborations on them.

Speaker 2

I think you mentioned Randy Houser singing Sitting on the Dock of the Bay with you.

Speaker 2

So good.

Speaker 2

How did some of those duets come together?

Speaker 2

Did you pick some of the artists picked them all.

Speaker 2

Amazing.

Speaker 10

I wanted to have some of my heroes, of those guys, Betty Levett, they're in their eighties.

Speaker 10

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 10

And I just wanted the world to see that they could still sing and still carry the mail.

Speaker 10

That was a lot of, Delbert's, you know, '82 or three, Sam Moore was 89, Lil' Anthony's probably 88 now, Eddie Floyd who wrote and sang the original Knock on Wood, duet with me on Knock on Wood, he's in probably his mid eighties.

Speaker 10

So, and then the rest of them are probably my age.

Speaker 10

So yeah, I called them all up.

Speaker 2

Very cool.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I don't know if you've been to the latest Muscle Shoals exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame, but it's really cool.

Speaker 2

I got to go to the opening concert for the exhibit.

Speaker 2

Candy Staten and Betty Lavette performed.

Speaker 2

It's so cool just hearing the music from the show.

Speaker 2

So I'm glad you got to put your own spin on it.

Speaker 10

People don't realize that I cut most of my hits in Muscle Shoals.

Speaker 10

I've been going to Muscle Shoals since 'eighty four.

Speaker 10

I know all about Muscle Shoals.

Speaker 10

I'll probably go see that exhibit, but I guarantee you there's nothing in the exhibit that I don't already know, And that I was right in the middle of it.

Speaker 10

I knew the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, the Swampers, I played on three or four of my hits.

Speaker 10

Know them all.

Speaker 10

One of the coolest things about this tremendous Muscle Shoals record is I got to get my friend David Hood, who's a bass player of the original Muscle Shoals railroad session.

Speaker 10

So it was kinda like a full circle moment.

Speaker 10

No, man, I know Muscle Shoals.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's amazing.

Speaker 2

You recorded most of your hits there.

Speaker 2

It's such a short drive from Nashville.

Speaker 2

今年你还庆祝了你的热门单曲《I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again》发行四十周年。

And this year, you're also celebrating the fortieth anniversary of your hit single, I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again.

Speaker 2

You've recorded more than a dozen albums, charted over 20 singles.

Speaker 2

What's the biggest lesson this music industry has taught you over the years?

Speaker 2

Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 10

I'll brag.

Speaker 10

Mean, I won an Emmy too.

Speaker 10

And I get to be in movies every now and then.

Speaker 10

Did I tell you I had a show on Sirius XM?

Speaker 2

You did?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It's on Prime Country Channel.

Speaker 2

I've definitely listened to that and tuned in.

Speaker 2

How did you

Speaker 10

disobeyed them for about three years and they finally, I think they finally just wanted to get me, you know, shoo me away and they said, okay, we'll let you do this and that's 7 and a half years ago, so that's a lot of fun.

Speaker 10

But yeah, man, the good thing is, I'm 71 and nobody tells me what to do in the North.

Speaker 10

I've already been there and done that.

Speaker 10

All these new artists are having to try to get their songs played everywhere it is, know, whatever format it's in.

Speaker 10

I've done all that.

Speaker 10

I'm glad, I would hate to be starting out right now.

Speaker 10

I'm glad it's all behind it.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it's definitely a different dynamic now and you're taking the reins.

Speaker 2

But in addition to radio and your album, your voice has also been recognized on other campaigns like McDonald's, the Taco Bell, Run for the Border television spots.

Speaker 2

What got you into writing jingles for

Speaker 10

I had a friend that called me up.

Speaker 10

The first time, the first jingle I had, I went to New York, Tom Anthony Music, and we did a Coca Cola commercial.

Speaker 10

I've been lucky, man.

Speaker 10

I've done Coke and Mountain Dew and Seven Up and Doctor Pepper and Taco Bell, McDonald's, Hardee's, Burger King, KFC, every corn truck, Budweiser, Strobes, Miller Coors, all these, I even did sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.

Speaker 10

The Almond Joy commercials, Disneyland, Harrals casinos, just on and on.

Speaker 10

I used to be the man, but you know, I wanted, if they wanted something, they'd call me.

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's so cool that you had the opportunity to do that.

Speaker 2

Definitely a recognizable voice.

Speaker 2

I think anyone listening in should check out your Taco Bell commercials.

Speaker 2

They're fun to Oh, see you

Speaker 10

Go on YouTube and look at our young T.

Speaker 10

Speaker 10

Go to YouTube and look up the one with Little Richard and me.

Speaker 10

Swear to God.

Speaker 2

Need to resurface those commercials.

Speaker 2

Yeah, no kidding.

Speaker 2

Well, you are also a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Speaker 2

I loved seeing the video of Vince Gill introducing you to become a member of the Opry.

Speaker 2

Such a special moment.

Speaker 2

Do you remember the first time you stepped onto the Opry stage as a performer?

Speaker 10

It's kind of hazy.

Speaker 10

It would have been in 1985.

Speaker 10

And people always ask me if I remember it or remember who introduced me.

Speaker 10

The night they inducted me, they showed these old videos with Porter Wagner introducing me and I looked so young and I thought, man, that might be the first time I was ever on it.

Speaker 10

So, but hey, I was on an Opry last night.

Speaker 10

I'll be on it two times next week.

Speaker 10

I love standing in that circle.

Speaker 10

It's nothing like it.

Speaker 10

It's the biggest career achievement Sheila and I have ever gotten.

Speaker 2

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's wonderful.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

People can look forward to you.

Speaker 2

Still performing at the Grand Ole Opry.

Speaker 2

T。

T.

Speaker 2

Graham Brown, thank you so much for being on Take A Lot Nashville today.

Speaker 2

I have one last question for you.

Speaker 2

What is the most memorable walk you have taken in Nashville?

Speaker 10

The most memorable walk?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 10

Golly, Bob.

Speaker 10

That's hard to say.

Speaker 10

I used to love going to The Parthenon.

Speaker 10

Have you ever been to The Parthenon?

Speaker 2

I have, yeah.

Speaker 10

That was one of my favorite things.

Speaker 10

I guess one of my favorite walks would be when I first moved to town, I started singing demos and I would walk up and down 16th Avenue when it was still Music Road and beg for opportunities to sing demos.

Speaker 10

Then that all came true and I got to be the guy on demos and then that led to my first record deal on Capitol Records.

Speaker 10

That's probably one of my favorite walks is going up and down 16th Avenue.

Speaker 2

It's so funny because John Barry said earlier the same thing.

Speaker 2

He's like, well, love Centennial Park, but when I wasn't doing that, walking up and down 16th Avenue.

Speaker 10

Really?

Speaker 10

Well, that's Hey, that's the way it was.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Well, you so much for And being here I hope listeners will check out your new music, timeless hits, and check you out at the Grand Ole Opry.

Speaker 2

Know what, Sarah?

Speaker 10

You are very good at this.

Speaker 10

Thank you.

Speaker 10
