Hi, and welcome to another episode of Talk Rehab.
I'm Bill Knowlting, and today, I have the pleasure of talking with Katy Roberts, a managing director with Raccoon Media Group, a very interesting organization.
I'm hoping that Katy will tell us more about Raccoon Media Group in a minute.
But more importantly, Katy has agreed to talk with me today about the new upcoming Abilities International Accessibility Conferences.
Thank you, Katy.
Welcome.
Thank you for having me.
Certainly.
My pleasure.
Katy,
Katy, please introduce yourself and tell us a little more about Katy Roberts.
好的。
Sure.
我叫Katy Roberts。
My name's Katy Roberts.
I'm the managing director of the Abilities Disability Portfolio, And that is part of Raccoon Media Group, who are a UK based exhibition organiser.
So we organise trade shows and consumer events in The UK, in The US and in Europe, in Mainland Europe.
I've been with Raccoon now for around eighteen months and been looking after the Abilities Expo portfolio for that that amount of time and very excited about our new launch of conferences that we will be executing and delivering in from March year alongside our Abilities Expos shows.
Katy, tell us a little about Raccoon Media Group.
是的
Yeah.
So Raccoon is around seven years old, started by an entrepreneur in his shed at the bottom of his garden who loved running.
So that's my CEO, Mike Seaman.
He was an avid runner and really just wanted an event that was for runners.
I'm not a runner myself, so I am I'm always intrigued by that show that has hundreds of exhibitors.
They have about 35,000 attendees that go over the two days in The UK.
It's in Birmingham.
It's an award winning show and that's been going now for, well, since the beginning of Raccoon Media Group.
And that was how the company started.
And since then, we've evolved into other passion led community events.
So that might be the National Equine Show, the Outdoor Show, the Allergy and Free From Show.
We have a national cycling show.
Raccoon bought Abilities Expo last year, last January.
And it didn't quite fit the mold exactly in terms of passion led communities.
But actually, I think it probably is because I think although our attendees wouldn't you know, they they they would certainly can they would certainly define themselves as a community.
And they are passionate about many things.
And I think that the shows do fit really nicely into what Raccoon does, which is to serve those communities that have have a shared interest or shared passion.
Your mission statement says, to help audiences live healthy and active lives by providing people with opportunities, experiences, and solutions in a digital and live environment.
That's quite a mouthful.
是的。
Yeah.
Quite a big mission.
Is it working?
是的。
Yeah.
I think it is.
是的。
Yeah.
So we launched, the International Running Expo in Amsterdam this November, and that's, a kind of an offshoot of the national running show, which is actually for trade.
So it's moving from that consumer audience into a trade and retail audience.
We are doing stuff in The Middle East.
We have shows in the Boston area as well.
So we have the Boston running show and the Boston outdoor show.
So, yeah, I think that the company at the moment is on a quite a steep trajectory in terms of how it's building and that's expected to grow over the next few years, which from my point of view means that I've got potentially more investment that I can work with and how I can grow our shows and my portfolio into really great experiences for the for the disability community.
Have you thought of taking up running as a hobby?
没有。
No.
I'm a swimmer.
I live by the beach.
So I live yes.
I I go swimming at the beach every almost well, as many days as I can, even in the winter when it's icy cold.
The sea in The UK is definitely a lot colder than the ocean around The US, most parts anyway.
Well, icy cold swimming does not sound like my cup of tea.
What beach are you near?
Well, I live on the Isle Of Wight, which is a little island, the farthest south that you can get to on the in The UK, and the beach is called Freshwater Bay.
So my team my team know, you know, that I'm always going on about how I've been at the beach this morning.
It's a great it's a yeah.
Cold water swimming is a good is a good thing, I think.
How much do you have to travel or how much of your job can you do remotely?
So I work US hours.
So I work my most of my team here in California.
And I travel to every show.
So we have seven shows a year.
We start in LA, then New York, then Chicago, Houston, then Phoenix is coming up this weekend.
And then we have Fort Lauderdale and finally Dallas in December.
So I will attend all of those shows.
So plus any additional ones.
So, you know, ISS, for example, in Pittsburgh, I attended that.
Anything else that's kind of relevant.
So, yeah, I'm traveling to The States quite a lot.
That sounds great for frequent flyer miles.
Let's talk about the expos and the accessibility conferences.
How are they going to work?
So as I said, the expos take place in seven cities across the country.
So our three biggest ones are LA, New York, which is really New Jersey, and Chicago.
Around halfway through last year, I met Wayne Growl from NCART.
And we started chatting.
He was really educating me about the industry and about how it's quite siloed and that there are many organisations that are actually working towards a very similar goal, but working kind of independently of others and not necessarily working together.
And what we the conversation went along the lines of that Abilities Expo is in a unique position where we are not an association.
We are the largest, arguably the largest destination for consumers with disabilities.
So in LA we will attract 10,000 attendees, in New York around 7,000, and in Chicago around four and a half, 5,000.
So there's a huge amount of people that attend the shows and trust Abilities Expo as consumers.
So I started to talk with Resner, with US Rehab, with Inart, NCART we were already in discussions.
I'd started talking with the team at Pittsburgh, so that run ISS, and I kind of began to bring, start to bring everybody together and to say we could create a conference that sits alongside these expos.
We've got consumers in the other, higher level of volume of consumers in the other room and we could create a kind of a melting pot and coalition of all these organizations to support OTs, PTs, ATPs, dealers, service providers.
So not just kind of clinical education, but also for those providers that are members of the organisation like US Rehab, so that it becomes a hub of the industry.
So that anyone that's really connected to the disability community, anyone that might be a part of that ecosystem can come to the conference and to Abilities Expo and they can gain continuing education, they can network, they can be have more information on parts of the industry that they might be looking at.
So for example, we've just recently had confirmation from ADED that they are going to help deliver some of our content on one of our tracks.
So assisted driving will be really interesting.
And all of the content that we are putting together with our own team that we've invested in is quite reflective of the type of exhibitors that we might that we have on the show floor.
So the logistics of what will happen is that a conference attendee will pay a fee to come into the conference because we are delivering at least ten hours of continuing education.
They will come in on the Thursday into the venue where we're holding the expo.
They will have two days of continuing education across clinical education, optimizing business.
So that might be for a US rehab style member who is a dealer or a service provider.
And then we've got an adapted living track, which might be to do with driving, it might be to do with financing outside of insurance.
So it's not just kind of a copy of the ISS content programme.
It's ISS plus lots of other associations that are all drawing into the content.
And then on the Friday we're giving the conference attendees will have the opportunity to then go into the expo to see, discover new products, services, everything that our consumers are then in the show looking at.
So they are co located conferences with the consumer expos in those three cities.
So in LA, New York and Chicago.
And we're expecting around 600 attendees to each conference.
That's in addition to those numbers that I talked about with the in terms of who comes to the expo in terms of those consumer numbers.
好的。
Okay.
Sounds great.
So there will be workshops, breakouts, general sessions, exhibit space, all of that?
对。
Yes.
This is a three day event?
So the conference is two days.
So the conference shoulders the the expo.
So it's Thursday, Friday, and then the expo will run as it usually does, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
So we have a three day expo and the two day conference.
So obviously, for any conference attendees that want to come back to the to the expo, they're very welcome to.
We we're hopeful what we've what we've kind of identified is that there's that it's quite prohibitive to travel to most of the conferences that take place in this industry around the country.
So those three geographical locations, we think there's we know that there is a high population of those type of people.
So we just think it might be easier for them.
They don't have to travel so far.
They can do two days.
They can gain their continuing education, which is part of their role, they can hear from experts within the field.
And we've got some some great speakers on the among the lineup already.
Chloe said, and I quote, this conference is the new rallying point for the CRT industry in The USA.
How clinicians, suppliers, manufacturers, and other advocates can collaborate to advance CRT.
That's a strong vision.
Does that pretty much sum it up?
是的。
Yeah.
That does sum it up.
没错。
Yeah.
I mean, the idea is that we've got peers that you could you can can network with peers with those all those different organizations that are all coming together rather than just going to the RESNA conference or the ISS conference.
This is a collaboration of all of those organizations and Abilities Abilities Expo is providing that platform, but bringing in the expertise of all those associations.
So we are the vehicle, we have the marketing reach, we have the infrastructure, and with Raccoon Media Group, we have the investment to be able to make sure that this is a serious conference with access to an established event in the expo.
是的。
Yeah.
I've been to the expos.
They're very nice shows.
They're great shows.
The one in Houston has been my favorite.
Oh, has it?
Well, that was a really good show that we just had in in August, just gone.
Well, I think it's the Tex Mex food, but the show's great too.
是的。
Yeah.
Could be.
It seems to me that most of your customers will be looking for continuing education for CEUs.
Will you be offering CEUs?
会的。
Yes.
So we should be able to achieve in that between during that that two days, there should be ten hours of CEUs that should be available.
We really wanted to commit to that because we know that it's hard for this group of professionals to come out of their workplace and we wanted to make it worth their while.
So yes, so we should reach ten hours of CEUs plus access to the expo as well.
The large providers in The US, the national providers, NSM, New Motion, and some of the larger regional providers all stage their own education events.
What will attract those potential customers to the Abilities Conference?
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, New Motion and NSM have all obviously, as national players, we would call those our biggest kind of competitor events.
But what they don't have is the level of consumer activity that we have and the number of exhibitors.
In LA, we'll have over 200 exhibitors on the show floor with 10,000 consumers.
So if you're a professional and you really want to see how that the new equipment is actually how is it working for a consumer, most of our exhibitors will use our shows as part of research and development anyway.
So it's I think as a clinician, can really see firsthand practical sessions with CEUs alongside the expo, which is kind of our USP, really.
So you're expecting the relationship between the expos and the Abilities Conference to be a draw?
是的。
Yes.
对。
Yes.
明白。
Yeah.
Smart.
Many of them attend the expos already, and some are exhibitors.
是的。
Yeah.
We we do I mean, in terms of our attendance of professionals, it makes up about 20% 15 to 20% of those that that come to the show.
So we can see that there is already an appetite from from those professionals.
But I think if we can, the idea is that if we can reach also those membership, the membership of Resnar, the membership of InArts, a clinician task force that we're working with closely as well.
So that type of content that those organisations will be delivering for us, it will be really compelling, I think.
This is your first run at this, the Abilities Conference.
I know you've done the expos, and I know that Raccoon is very experienced and creative.
How's it going?
是的。
Yeah.
Really good.
We've already got, I mean, I forget the number now.
I think we've got six sponsors who are already signed up.
比如Atlas Technologies、Sunrise、Quantum、Etech。
So Atlas Technologies, Sunrise, Quantum, Etech.
I'm going forget the others but I can send them to you.
And we've got around 500 pre registered attendees, so people that have said that they would like to receive more information which is very reassuring.
That was part of our metrics as to launch.
We had several different numbers that we wanted to reach.
We wanted to get to 300 by the June and that's what we achieved.
So that's going really well.
We've got some really great media partnerships that are already in place, which is great.
So we're really positive and certainly our exhibitors and the industry seem to have just to believe that this is a really great thing for the market.
Have you opened up registration yet?
No.
So registration launches on the October 27 for all three events.
So that will be for LA, New York, and Chicago.
Can you rattle off the dates for these events one once again, please?
The LA event is the March.
The New York event is April 30 and May 1.
Chicago, June.
How are you promoting this as a special, one of a kind, don't you dare miss this event?
Are you doing anything special to get in front of your audience?
Well, the the media partnerships that we have will be will play a key part to that and also the reach that the associations have that we're working with.
So we know that traditionally conferences that these associations tend to put on, may only get two thirds of their membership might attend and that would be a very good turnout.
So we are using the geographical locations to reach that membership of people that wouldn't normally attend the conferences.
ISS, as I'm sure you'll know, is in its off year in 2026.
So it happens every two years.
So there will be that number of attendees that might normally go to ISS, which we hope will look to come to one of the conferences.
And we also have our professional data that we already have acquired from, fifteen years of data that we have for Abilities Expo.
So we'll be reaching out to them as well.
So it really is leveraging our partners' memberships, their their databases to make sure everybody knows about what we're doing.
And we have an investment in marketing spend as well.
So that will be through social email campaigns, text campaigns.
I'm guessing the AOTA and the APTA would be a big hit for you if you could round them up.
是的。
Yes.
We have been trying.
They don't want they they've not been hugely receptive to us yet, but we will keep trying.
We'll keep knocking on their door to to tell them that we you know, that to let them know what we're doing.
We're we're keen to talk to them.
Katie, what haven't we covered?
What else would you like for people to know about this special event?
I think that it's important to recognize that the conferences for that sit alongside Abilities Expo will be unique in what they offer.
It isn't, as I've said, it isn't a direct replica of any of the existing partner conferences.
So it isn't the Resna Conference.
It isn't the ISS Conference.
It is a combination of continuing education in terms of clinical education.
But alongside that, it is a content track that really educates clinicians in terms of what happens when you're in a room with someone that's newly injured and what are those questions that get asked.
How will I drive again?
How can I get a service dog?
How do I pay for something if it's not covered on insurance?
So those are more almost what we call lifestyle topics.
And we've got really great experts within those fields to be able to bring that content together as well.
You know, clinicians might want to meet their patients.
That might be something they do if their patients are already going to the expo to look at new equipment.
So being able to have that kind of practical hands on experience as well.
I think it's just really it's going to be a really unique experience and hopefully on their doorstep.
Geographically, it will be just maybe a hotel stay, not having to get hours and hours of flights to get somewhere, which should make it all much easier and manageable.
I expect you plan to have your education offerings published by registration time in October.
是的。
Yeah.
当然。
Absolutely.
I don't have it yet, but we will have it by the September.
So for all three tracks.
So there's the patient clinical education track, there's the business optimization track and there's adapted living track.

Is there anything that we missed?
I don't think so.
没有。
No.
I think that probably covers it.
Whose idea was this?
Was the Abilities Conference your idea?
If it goes really well, yes.
But I would like to, you know, I think it's fair to say that Wayne at NCAR was was quite instrumental in terms of planting the seed and I think that I have been able to pick up that baton from him and bring it together.
And, hopefully, you know, he's it's his it it was his vision, and I am executing that vision and adapting it in the way that we can as organized as organizing experts as well as we can do.
And I'm sure you will.
