Hello, and welcome to a new episode of talking snooker with Phil Haig and Nick Metcalfe once again talking about the game we all love.
We are indeed.
I'm sure a lot of people in the sporting world are pretty focused on the World Cup at the minute.
Just had Belgium against Egypt this evening, but we're gonna focus ourselves on the Matioli Arena, Leicester.
Slightly less glamorous, Phil.
没错。
Absolutely.
The world's attention being taken up, as you rightly say, by events in North America, in The United States, Mexico, and Canada, and the start of football's greatest show.
So all sports, not just this one, has to fight for its corner, doesn't it?
Because we all know that.
I mean, nothing quite compares to the World Cups and Olympics every four years.
It's a scarcity value of them, isn't it, that makes them that's one of the reasons they are so special and so captivating.
But, of course, as you say, snooker has been going on, the new season underway.
And China Open qualifying, well, that's now been completed in Leicester, the new home of the game, as we often say now.
And, Phil, let's get straight on with it, shall we?
Some look at some of those stories and and key results from the action there.
And, well, I was on air of my radio snooker service on day one of the season, and, well, I I was thinking that Anton Kasakos, after an absolute flyer, you know, went about my had a bit of lunch, you know, pottered around a bit locally, and then I'll have a look.
Lost six four.
Amazing comeback from Jamie Clark there to claim victory.
And good to see young butt, Jimmy White, as well claim victory on day one of the season.
He beat Sean O'Sullivan six two.
And then Phil, I mean, we one four sevens was one of the themes of last season.
We we couldn't get our head around the numbers that were I thought it slowed down a little bit in the second half of the season, but it was still it was still kind of remarkable numbers.
Day two of the season, already a one four seven for Michael Holt.
Great thing is the first of his career, that's a special one for Michael, beat Mark Joyce six one as well.
And I've just picked up a couple of lines as well before we take you through those final qualifying round results.
Day three, Stuart Bingham had a had a victory over Ian Burns by six frames to four.
And Luka Vacel, Jamie Clark was a real exciting one, six five for Luka.
And in the day four line fill, we nearly had another one four seven.
This was Zeusse who who missed the final black.
And I noticed on your, excellent table service available every Monday on email, you highlighted the scoring and quite rightly put this.
Jones made a one one six in the open.
Let me get this right here.
Zeusseur then made breaks of 88, 59, 54, fifty, one ten, and one forty.
I think someone's been on the platter's table, Phil.
He he won six one.
By the way, noticed the bonus for the, the the the one four seven with the triple crowd events has gone.
Totally understandable, I think, really, when you think about how crazily commonplace that they've they've become.
But, yeah, some some good lines there for you.
Lovely stuff for Michael.
And one of those agonizing near misses from Sousa that must be horrible for snooker players.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Absolutely.
对。
Yeah.
I I don't know if that just wasn't on the stream table, because I've not seen that anywhere.
I don't know what the shot on the black looked like.
So I don't know if we just missed that or it's just it's not floating about anywhere.
If we have missed it in ears, someone send it to us, please.
But, yeah, what a performance that is.
I made the point in the newsletter.
没错。
Yeah.
Just these are qualifying matches, not sort of they're not the masters.
You've seen scores like this.
This yet another illustration of the standard through the game.
Xu Xu, I often think he looks like the next Chinese player to sort of make a step up, level up towards that top 16, but just the consistency isn't there.
But when he's on it, he looks absolutely fantastic.
But, yeah, you mentioned a few of the ones I pointed out as well.
Jimmy, 64 years old, making, getting a little bit in the opening day.
And making breaks as well.
He's not just sort of fudging him out doing it.
Another one, Paul Norris, who we mentioned before, the 59 year old rookie.
He had a big old slob with Anthony Kowalski.
He lost six-four in the end, but you know, he's not gonna turn up and just get thrashed every game, if that was anyone's worry.
He does look like he's very capable of competing.
And yeah, the only other one I noticed there was a crazy game between Ross Muir and Michael Sparshik, their 15 year old.
Muir was five nil up.
Sparshik got it all the way back to five five and then lost the decider.
So one of those, would you rather just lose six nil than do all that work just to lose anyway?
I don't know.
But that was a painful one.
There was a similar one actually where Liam Davis was four nil at tie player, Cheshire pong NASA.
NASA got it all the way to five four ahead.
Davis got back to the decider and then lost it.
So, yeah, there seemed to be a few early doors in in the qualifiers that there's big swings, and I think the best best of 11 is a good length match, really.
It's nice to start the season with them.
You're probably into some real business there, And you get that you've got quite a lot of these big swings in these matches already and some pretty stinging defeats.
You know, these people will be excited to get back on the table because if you forget for a lot it feels like the break's very short, doesn't it?
Because we're thinking from the world championship final.
But a lot of these guys haven't played for a long time before that.
So they're probably excited to get their first games of the season in, and then there's some real stinking losses straight away, but that's snooker.
是的
Yeah.
A lot of wisdom there.
You're absolutely right.
You made this point in previous seasons, and it's I I I probably forget it by the next year, and I think that's a good point you made again.
But, you know, our season, it always feels like, you know, when when I was on the edge of the dance floor pointing to deck seats, that that's when the sort of season ends.
But, of course, it's weeks before that for many people in the game and and the most important people of all, the players.
You're right.
You know, many of them don't make the crucible, of course, only if you do.
And and and plenty of them lose early in qualifying for the world.
So, yeah, for them, it is quite a long break.
Absolutely the right way of saying it.
Well, I mean, it's interesting that that comeback thing.
We said it before, I know, but it is so sort of common that a player would come back for miles behind, get level.
Then there's a different energy about it, isn't it?
Then then the but, course, we got an example coming up here of one where it was completed, Tom Ford and and Liam Highfield.
I mean, that is amazing field.
Four, five nil down, and also down quite considerably, 53 points down in the decider.
And I was gonna do a little line with you about I don't I don't fancy giving Liam Highfield a call.
Well, we'll go on to another story.
You know, another sting to me, the next round of qualifying, we'll come on to that, but that that Ford Highfield was something else.
Nothing like it in terms of drama in the Bingham and Bracel match, two former world champions.
Six nil for Stewart there with three half centuries.
Hussein Vafibi, David Lilly, six one.
One two six and a one three two in there from Hussein.
Anthony McGill, who I must admit, I I always like to see do well.
I don't think he does well enough in a way when you think how good he is.
He beat Joe O'Connor six two.
Nopon Sian can beat Elliott Slessor six one.
Good scoring from Jackson Page in beating one six three.
Breaks of one zero seven, one two three, sixty three and sixty four from Page.
Zhang Ander beat Daniel Wells, six four.
Matt Selby, Ali Carter, six five.
Real old slop between those two who've been around for reverend a day, of course.
But, I mean, the line there is is forward and high field.
I remember Phil Yates once describing it very well in the I I won't get the words he said or the way the the very good way he would have said it, but, you know, three nil best of sevens and one four three are relatively commonplace.
Then then the sort of four nil, five four, not so much we get a few of them.
This is a bit like Hennes Teeth, this five nil, six five.
It's I think it's I remember it's happened a couple of times with the masters actually, but that's a horrible one for Highfield.
Yeah.
There was one it was that big one in The UK qualifiers last year where Donaldson beat Bingham six five from five nil,
他
and he
had that very emotional interview with Rob afterwards.
But, yeah, they are very rare, and it looked like I didn't watch the game, but from the scoring, it looked like maybe Ford just freed up.
Because at five nil, made it back to back tons, which is Yeah.
He just free flowing.
But as you say, mean, it it was it was a nightmare for Highfield because it looked like he'd started brilliantly.
I think he beat he beat Florian Nusler six two, I think, the first round, then beat Maguire six one, which a great win for Highfield.
And then to lose like that, I mean, at five nearly, he would have been thinking, this could be my year.
And now he may be well be questioning that.
But, yeah, well done to Tom Ford though, because I don't know, like digging in and resilience isn't necessarily what he's known for.
He wouldn't be top of the list of people you think of if you were thinking of those traits, but he's pulled off a fantastic victory there.
One that I noticed was Knop on great win against Lesnar six one.
Nopon, I don't know what happened to him last season, he had a real bad one.
He didn't do anything really, and we know how good a player is.
So that's the encouraging start to this season for him.
And yeah, the other one's not too many shocks elsewhere.
I watched a bit of Bingham against Bracel, and that was just a shocker of a day for Luca.
It just He nothing's going wasn't playing great, but it just seemed like everything he touched was going wrong.
I mean, losing to Stuart's now disgrace, but you wouldn't expect a six nil, but that was just a day to forget for the Bullet.
是的。
Yeah.
Was thinking to myself, you know, when will Luca come good again?
And I think he will.
I'm not saying he'll get to the very, very heights again like he did.
That that might be something that's a bit difficult to predict, but he's just too good, too talented, I think, not to sort of fire again.
Because he he's done it in one or two subsequent crucibles again as well, which we kinda forget.
He'd been brilliant out of nothing in those.
So maybe he just needs that big big stage to to shine.
But, of course, it's not all about big stages, especially now with him being further down the rankings.
So, yeah, I just hope it comes because, know, a good Luke who is is good for the sport.
He he's an absolute thrilling guy, isn't he?
Let's be honest, Phil.
I mean, you know, he's just he's just so exciting, you know.
And it's one of the subsequent crucibles.
I think when he played Judd, I was in there for one of those sessions thinking, in a way, no one plays Luca like him.
You know, he's just so exciting and devil may care, and, you know, you just want those guys.
But I guess that's the thing with the package with Luca.
You know, you get that maverick side.
We, you know, we can't just have all the goodness of him being a sort of thrilling character without his sort of, you know, nightlife and sort of the mad elements as well.
That's what makes him such a thrilling character, I guess.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
That, I've got such fond memories of the game against Trilogy.
It was such a good game.
I was watching that out in bit of that out in Tudor Square, it was boiling hot.
It was just packed.
The atmosphere out there was so good.
But, yeah, I suppose this is the nature of him.
He's gonna be a streaky player.
He'll just have the odd week where he's untouchable, then you won't see him for a while.
I suppose we what we don't really know is, you know, he's spoken about this health issue he's been dealing with for quite a while now, and he hasn't gone into too much detail about it.
We just don't know how much that is affecting him.
And he seems to be playing quite regularly again, so it's not stopping him from turning up at tournaments, but it sounded like it was quite debilitating the way he was sort of half describing it before.
So hopefully we'll find out what that was or is still at But some yeah, I mean, I completely agree.
The more we see of him, the better.
When he's playing well, he's yeah.
It's dynamite, isn't he?
是的
Yeah.
We hope he's better.
是。
Are.
We should perhaps check up with Luca sooner on that one, actually.
Well, Phil, in the next set of eight results then, Champagne used six Jack Lisowski one.
I mean, Champ made a half century in every frame there, including the opener that he lost, and he and he finished with a one three three two.
So and a lot of people say he's gonna be a top performer this season, you know, nothing that we're seeing, you know, there is is stopping that thought.
Yao Peng Cheng, six.
Hei Gui Kuang, two.
It was Lu Hongyu, six.
Yulian Boyko, nil, three half centuries from Lu.
Dave Gilbert, six.
Zusa, two.
Maybe that inconsistency you talk about from Sue there.
You got, you know, well beaten there.
Xiao Yu Long, six.
Chen Rui Rui Fu, three.
Well, Aaron Hill, Gary Wilson was an absolute thriller.
I noticed some friends and colleagues of ours in the Irish snooker media really saying that was a big one to get Aaron off to a good start for the season.
86 on the decider from him to win that match.
Pang Jong Su, six.
Fang Xianxi, four.
And Jiang Jun, six.
Jimmy Robertson, four.
So, yeah, plenty to talk about there.
I mean, sounds like you got a pacing, but, you know, he doesn't really didn't seem to do much.
I mean, know, he just wonderful scoring from from Chang.
And, yeah, that that Hill and Wilson, I wouldn't mind seeing that.
Actually, that that looked read that sounded like a a really good match.
Aaron Hill is getting there slowly but surely.
He'll hope this season it's more of a the surely and the slowly, Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Well, I think last season he would have ended disappointingly because he had the he played Gilbert again in on Judgment Day, and it had been that ten nine where he should have won really the year before, and he lost more comfortably this time.
But despite that, it was definitely progress.
He made those two one four sevens.
He moved up the rankings, and I think he is still continuing to progress.
And that's a great win.
是的。
Yeah.
He was four nil down to Gary Wilson in that match.
So to win six five from there It's very impressive against, you know, we know how good Gary is.
And yet, Chang, like, he just he seems very sure that he'll he's gonna he's gonna continue up the rankings, but it feels like it could be very quickly.
You know, he could be pushing the top 16 certainly this season, and maybe even the first half of this season if he just gets on a run.
是的。
Yeah.
He's just very, very impressive.
Yao Cheng Chen was an interesting one there.
He only came on tour last season.
He's not he's young, but he's not really, really young.
I think he's 29.
And he had a slow start.
He didn't look like he was doing much, but he did progress over the season.
He started picking up results more and more regularly.
I don't know loads about him, but those three wins there, impressive.
He beat he beat Rian, and he beat Tep Chaya, he beat Ergo Guan.
So that's three good wins to get to the China Open there, and he may well just be settling into tour quite nicely.
And Zhang Zhijong was the other one.
Three very impressive wins there.
Beat Jimmy Roberson six four after beating Sahil Nayar, the Canadian player at the start, but then beat Jack Zhao in six three.
So Zhang Zhijong is he's an interesting player to watch.
He's quite sort of slow, but it's more that he he looks really anxious.
He sort of gets up and down a lot, goes back to his chair a lot.
He's quite sort of fidgety, but he's only 20, and I think he he is really good.
He's got some wins over some great players, so he he should be he's gonna be one to watch this season, and that's a that's a very good start for him.
Well, a pretty lot of results there, absolutely, as you you you outlined.
And, Phil, you were mentioning a couple of of issues and results that we've seen from from Wuhan Open qualifying.
So I'm gonna let you have the video print chart.
You know, we we always have to do a bit of arm wrestle for it, don't we?
不用。
No.
We don't.
You know, I'm the one that's sort suss I'm the one that's sort sussed by it.
But you can have it today.
We should say, Phil, that, a man, you know, that's become very well known for the commentating aside, but as he will say, first and foremost a player, Steve Hallworth.
He beat the new women's world champion Panchaya Channoy five nil.
This is today's results.
We're picking on a Monday night, aren't we?
Actually, saying just after Belgium, Egypt.
Irishman Leon Crowley beat Liu Yang five two, another result that I noticed.
And then, well, I mentioned Liam Highfield's mood.
Well, it won't have been improved, Phil, because he was swinging up against Gong Zhengzi, but lost five four, a break of one zero one from Gong and the decider.
And another match that happened not that long before we came on the air, actually, Mitchell Mann, he had a good comeback.
He came back from four two down to beat Julian Boyko five four.
So you may have spotted some more results today, and then you can tell us what's happening on this Monday night of action.
是的。
Yeah.
I watched I watched some of Steve Haworth against Panchayat this morning.
That was the table one game on WST play, which we'll we'll mention in a sec because that's a new commentary service.
But, yeah, I mean, she struggled, but I was thinking how mad it must have been for her or is at the minute.
She was not expected to win that women's world championship.
I'm sure she was enough to think she could, but to then get a court card.
And now she's moved over, I guess she's moved over it at least sort of semi permanently because she's got these games and then the championship league and there's loads of other qualifiers here.
But, you know, she's only a teenager just to sort of up sticks and move over here to Leicester or Sheffield or wherever she's gone and just, you know, it's just a huge change in her life.
So, yeah, she didn't show her best there, but she's got a lot to go through recently.
I'm sure she'll improve.
是的。
Yeah.
The one or two things I picked out was first win on tour for Michael Larkov, the Ukrainian who came through.
Did he win the WSF junior?
It's only 17.
He beat Antony Kvarsky, so that's very good win.
I watched Liam Davis against Liam Pullen, not quite like that.
Two great young players.
It just shows that there's not loads between them.
And so Liam Pullen ended last season with that amazing run through qualifying and Koushov will debut, whereas Liam Davis ended the season dropping off tour.
But then they play right at the start of the year, and Davis wins five three.
So there's not loads between them, really, but it would have felt an awful lot between them at the end of last season, the way they ended.
But still think Liam Davis is very good.
I think he's got a very bright future, and obviously Pullen has as well, but he's just shown it more recently.
And then just hot off the press.
是的。
Yeah.
Another good win for Jiangjun.
Talking about him, he beat Jimmy White five three.
I think there's only one game going on as we speak, which is a great first rounder.
Sam Craig against Julian Leclerc.
And it's four three to Craig here at the minute, so it's still going on.
We've just had Ben Merton beat Ashley Hugle five one, Louis Heathcote being Paul Norris five one, and a first win on tour for Phil O'Cain, who's beat Chachapong Nesser five three.
So well done to Phil.
Is he think you went out first round in China Open, but good to get a first win on the board there.
It's a very early first win.
是的。
Yeah.
Plenty of guys new on tour take an awful lot longer than that, so that yeah.
Hats off.
That's terrific stuff.
And that that Wuhan Open qualifying will continue throughout the week.
As you say, like, what WST play with the latest scores on the ever excellent snooker.org.
And, Phil, I know you you you wanna say a bit more about WST?
You flagged that up.
是的。
Yeah.
That was good.
对。
Yeah.
Just nice to have commentary.
You know, mean, yeah, that was a given really.
Like, we watched a lot of got used to watching a lot of streamed matches just in silence, and it's just nice to have those guys for company flitting around from the table, so you less like to miss anything that's going on over there.
Michael Day, I heard a couple of times.
I was definitely listening to him on the last day of the Sunday, but he was great.
He messaged me on Twitter just saying he a was bit a bit nervous.
He took a bit getting into it.
I'm not sure I heard him earlier in the week, but by the time I did hear him, he sounded great to me.
So, yeah, well done to him.
And, yeah, he goes without saying that it's improved by having commentary on, and I thought they did a good job.
是的
Yep.
Great stuff.
And that service will continue throughout the season, and it certainly will, of course, first and foremost this week as Wuhan Open qualifying continues.
Phil, we should say as well, the championship league begins in Leicester.
That's the new home of the game next Monday.
Phil, there are more episodes of the championship league than there was Knott's Landing.
That's that's one for the teenagers.
Knott's Landing.
I don't know where they got that one from, an old TV show.
Phil, there's quite a few handy snooker players in action next week.
Kyren Wilson next Monday, Mark Williams next Tuesday, and then plenty more top top players as the week continues.
The likes of Gary Wilson, Anthony McGill, Dave Gilbert, Ted Troy, and no one among those in action.
So the championship is getting underway.
As we always say, a bit of a slow burner, but I I quite like this one.
The the one in the one in the early months of the year, yeah, I I struggle with it quite quite a lot more, I'm honest.
But this one, I I get it, you know, it's it's easy, you know, and I I I like easy sport.
I know what's happening.
I know what's going on every day.
It's a nice format.
Everyone gets a little sort of their turn if you like.
It's relatively high stakes.
It's a it's a ranking event, so it is high stakes, much higher stakes than it used to be.
And yeah, just, yeah, I think it's quite a clever format actually, the way it sort of develops and goes on.
So always enjoy that.
And, yeah, it'll it'll go it'll go on till nearly the end of the World Cup.
I would have thought the World Cup's an absolute monster this time, but this will this will almost match it in length when it gets going.
Yeah, think that's right.
Yeah, yeah.
No, I like the idea that it's a great opportunity for everyone involved.
Usually you get, you know, it's not a rank outsider who wins it, but it feels like anyone could win it a lot of the time.
Yeah, I think there's five top 16 players I was looking through, Su Zhao Wei, Chris Wakelin, Kyren Wilson, Mark Williams, and Xiao Zing Tong's in it.
而且
And
then there's the handful of players just outside, Zhang Ander, Lisowski, Cesar, Bingham, Xiao Yi Long.
So yeah, they're all the big names, but there's plenty of very good players in there.
And I was speaking to Stephen Haworth that I interviewed him last week, and I hadn't seen the draw then.
And he was like, yeah, but Mark Williams, he decided to turn up.
So he's in his groove, I think you would feel a bit aggrieved if you get one of the very top players because not that, they don't all play.
So I think he was a bit disappointed to see that.
But yeah, no, I'm looking forward to that.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
This one just makes sense and the opportunity is great.
And there there are two things you wouldn't say about the invitational one.
Like, it's much harder to follow and the opportunity isn't there because not everyone does get to play it.
And it just seems more like sort of top players getting paid practice more than anything.
But but, yeah, this one, I do enjoy over the summer.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I find the other one a bit confusing really, to be honest, this is this is very good.
We look forward to it, and that's underway next Monday, The championship league.
So quite a lot of action going on, Phil, which is, it's it's June, but it's a it's a a start to the season.
The long journey towards, the next world championship in Sheffield is underway, and we've had all the China qualifying.
Wuhan qualifying is underway and plenty more to come, over over the days in this week.
Phil, we got correspondence, haven't we?
That's also, something we're gonna do this episode.
We're gonna turn to your views.
So it's meant to be a sort of tale of two halves, the action on the table in the first half and the correspondence in the second.
And we'll say now that you are listening to the Talking Snooker podcast with Phil Hague and Nick Metcalf.

这里是《Talking Snooker》。
It's Talking Snooker here.
Phil,
And, Phil, we have had correspondence in.
Let's go to it, shall we?
And first to, Craig Mallian, who has had to send a reminder, actually.
This came through towards the end of last season, but amid the sort of Sheffield madness, things can get easily missed.
So Craig sends a nice reminder message, and I'm grateful to you for that, Craig.
It says, dear Nick and Phil, hello.
I have finally found the time to write in as promised about my trip to Goth's for the John Virgo trophy.
Nick, I had the pleasure of bumping into you.
I won't mention exactly where.
Well, it was the facilities, that's what you mean, don't you?
At the venue, we had a nice chat, and he even had me fooled that I'd called you Phil.
The whole weekend was an absolute delight.
I saw Williams v Higgins on the Saturday and was lucky enough to attend all day on the Sunday for the third fourth place playoff between Williams and Hendrie, and the final between Higgins and O'Sullivan, which produced a vastly different outcome to the classic match we all had the pleasure to witness the crucible.
Having heard so many tales from yesteryear of previous tournaments held at golf's, and given the lineup, I just had to be there.
Golf's really lived up to its billing from all the stories I've heard from players, pundits, and journalists alike.
It truly is just a superb venue and perfect for snooker despite the limitations backstage, which I really hope can be worked upon to see snooker return as a regular fixture.
I alternated between seating and standing many times, and wherever I was, I had a superb view of the table.
The seats were very comfy too, a rarity in my snooker going experience.
Food and drink was reasonably priced, and the Guinness was top notch.
Many pints were sunk, but I was away on my own for the weekend, so I thought, why not?
I got chatting with many fellow snooker fans over the weekend and just loved the buzz.
The staff were great crap too.
I really hope Golf's becomes a regular venue for the snooker again.
I will definitely be back if it does.
Particular highlights for me from the weekend will be grabbing selfies with Mark Williams and Neil Fowles, the pint of Guinness one of the barman did me on the house.
I think I'd more than swallowed their coffers by this point, and of course witnessing the great Dennis Taylor's trick shot cabaret.
It truly was an honor to be there for that, and also to see the wonderful tributes that he and everyone else made to the late great JV.
I could go on and on, but I won't take up any more of your you or your listeners' time.
I hope to meet you again at future tournaments, Nick.
I'd love to get up to Sheffield one year.
Perhaps you may have Phil by your side.
Failing that, I could just call you Phil anyway.
I salute you both, sirs.
Kind regards, Craig.
There was a period where about three or four people in a row did call me Phil, which was sort of nice, but a bit the opposite of a morale boost in other in other other ways.
是的。
Yes.
Well, the funny thing was about the facilities, it was a weekend of just chatting to everyone about snooker.
It was like you know what it's like in and around Sheffield.
It was it was even more concentrated in a sort of smaller venue, and everyone was just talking snooker.
Funny enough, I saw Neil Fowles at one stage and and in the facilities, and people were sort of talking, oh, Neil, I saw you playing Pontins.
I think it was about 84.
Oh, Who was our play?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, he was a good player.
This kind of banter was going on.
It was brilliant.
It was a snooker lovers heaven for the weekend.
I was in there for one of the two days, actually.
But, yeah, I'm glad you had a great time, Craig.
I do remember meeting you, and I met met met lots of friends from there, the the Irish communities.
That was brilliant.
And lots of English people were no British.
They I happen to be a lot of English people, but lots of Brits actually, Scots as well, went over to to Ireland for that.
So that was great, you know.
A few people from Essex as recall as well.
I think one or two from the Southwest Of England.
They they made that sort of almost like a pilgrimage because, yeah, I I guess like me, the same reasons for me.
I wanted to see that venue at last.
那里和J.V.
There was the the the the connections to JV and just, you know, all those stars playing there.
But for me, it was mostly the venue, I must admit.
I just wanted to see golfs, heard all about it.
Funny old place sort of in Minna Nowhere in a way, but, you know, in in Kildare there.
But, yeah, a nice time.
Enjoyed my little trips to Dublin, all the little lovely little towns and pubs around around the area.
Great welcome from everybody and thoroughly enjoyed it.
And, yeah, it's yeah.
We know we've we've been through it all before, you know, about the backstage thing.
没错。
Right.
I do say, you do hear different views depending on who you talk to.
You hear some people say, no, there's absolutely no way whatsoever.
There's just not if you, you know, there's no practice table facilities, there's not enough room for commentators or, you know, staff.
But you hear other people say, there's a hotel on-site now.
You'd have practice tables there.
So you do hear different things.
However, one thing is for sure, the actual main match table with that crowd around is is a priceless scene.
And, thank you very much indeed, Craig, for for reminding me and everyone else that was there of that.
And, yeah, good good to hear from you.
And, yeah, so you'd never been called Nick, have you?
I know you haven't.
You're too distinctive, I think.
对。
Yeah.
That just helps.
I've had looked like this.
It just helped for some things.
对。
Yeah.
没有。
No.
I don't think so.
You know, I was very jealous of your trip to golf, so I think I'll have to do that at some point.
And even if there's not a main tour, know, the seniors and the 900 have been quite well established there for a while now, haven't they?
So there definitely will be some snooker there, even if it's not a main tour event.
To be honest, it looked perfect for that, didn't it?
You know, that was the ideal setup.
We got those handful of players and what lineup they got there.
It's ideal.
I mean, I just watch it on the telly.
Those walk ons for Ronnie and Hendrick were very memorable.
So yeah, I'll be making that trip at some point if I can, but yeah, it ideal for sort of that kind of setup, a four man event, which you're not gonna get on a main tour, are you?
So good to have that elsewhere.
Were you there for Dennis' trick truck cabaret?
No, that was on the Sunday.
I wasn't, I wasn't.
Heard things about it.
I mean, sounds sort of like I've been, you know, I've seen Dennis do lots of trick shot shows before, so I imagine with the shows I've seen before, it would have been a sort of, I wouldn't have missed much in that sense, you know, But he he does so so brilliantly.
I think I saw one or two clips on on the on the on the the telly of that actually.
Didn't see it live, but I think I saw some clips after of it.
And, yeah, did I have a chance to speak with Dennis?
Think I did very briefly on my radio snooker service, and he was making a point to me then how much we'd we'd we'd we'd missed John, and he might be the one to say, where's the cue ball going?
Which I think he did a couple of times.
I think he did early on.
In fact, was a great moment, wasn't there, Phil, if you remember the that that memorable memorial service for John when he said very touchingly, you know, he said looked over to the family and said, will you mind if I say, you know, the clerk?
And they said, no.
No.
We don't mind that at all.
And, that was just a moment, wasn't it?
But those sayings.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think it's nice.
They should live on, especially as certainly, you know, a great friend like that.
You wouldn't want like a new commentator coming and taking them on board or anything.
That'd be bit weird.
But yeah, I mean, for Dennis to ask permission from his family, I'm sure he's in need it, but yeah, of course.
是的。
Yeah.
I would be interested to see that.
The word cabaret, I think maybe needs updating.
It makes it sound very old fashioned, but I guess
Well, you won't you won't be surprised to hear I don't agree.
I mean, I love the word cabaret.
Well, I don't I don't I couldn't disagree with you more.
It's a wonderful old word.
Makes me think about pure yesteryear.
Makes me don't know.
Makes me think about sort of summer season with Roy Hardin and elements like that.
I'm gonna see you you you kindly agreeing.
Norman Collier.
Norman Norman Collier and all these characters from yesteryear.
Remember when Dave Hendon was on us with us?
He he he he he memorably remembered that Roger the Corsey of Corsey had Nookie Bear.
I couldn't remember Roger the Corsey.
This is going back a bit.
You better move on to 01/1947.
对。
Yeah.
Before I start sort of just going down memory lane too much.
是的。
Yeah.
You've you've left me the lucky one here from Gaz 01/1947.
Thank you for another season on Talking Snooker.
You both do such a brilliant job on air.
Just the right balance of information and humor.
You obviously have a great chemistry as a partnership, and it makes for such enjoyable listening.
I think my personal favorite episode of the season was when you met up in Hackney.
You didn't quite know what was going to happen next.
Apples?
We don't have any actual apples.
I don't know.
I'd actually forgotten the specifics of that, but I really laugh reading that again.
Thanks for all your hard work over many years, which I personally don't think you get enough credit for, and I hope to see you at the crucible or another tournament at some stage.
Well, you, Kaz.
对。
Yeah.
That was a memorable episode in Hackney.
It was.
Sort of felt for the wrong reasons at the time, but actually I think it was an enjoyable mad listen.
Yeah, we elected to go right on Mare Street rather than sort of the quiet.
I think, 's the quieter area of the pub?
The quieter sort of the other end, if you like?
Maybe it was full or something or was it a bit noisy?
Don't quite remember the reason
piano.
现在。
Now.
Was it?
Right.
Oh, the old Joanna.
I don't remember that.
Right.
Ask your so he's talking about mastery.
Sort of barking mad, really.
Sort of quite a mile it was a mild autumn night, wasn't it?
We're just out there with all yeah.
It's just well, Hackney's, yeah, you never quite know what you're gonna get.
So I'm glad that sort of came over, but, yeah, very kind of email.
Thank you very much indeed to you, Gaz.
Move on to Andrew Fairweather who says, I spent four days in Sheffield at this world championship.
Each year, I drive there from Suffolk thinking it's surely not as good as you think it is, and every year it is.
This year, even more so.
What an atmosphere.
What a what an atmosphere.
What a tournament and what an unbelievable snook of the seventeen days.
I think I've watched more this year than ever before and took in five sessions in three days in various parts of the theater.
Each year, it's easy to make friends with people, and the weather is always gorgeous when I'm there to sit in Tudor Square.
Hard to pick a highlight of my trip, maybe watching the final session of O'Sullivan v Higgins in the square, or having a seat sat next to Mark Allen for the first session of his match against Barry Hawkins.
Amazing.
My only slight disappointment was the legend seats.
Very comfortable.
Great to meet Stuart Bingham, and perfect place except for the cameras, which I hadn't thought of before going.
I'm sure when it was one table, this wasn't an issue, but it was a pain looking up so much at the time.
If that is my most negative thought though, roll on next year.
One slight thought about the one two years away from the crucible.
A few months back, I went to see something at the new theater in Wembley, and my first thought walking on in was this should be a great venue for snooker.
Where better when away from home than Wembley 2 and keeping with a theater theme?
Andrew.
Well, thanks thanks, Andrew.
Great to hear from you.
I messaged you and said I didn't really know about that new theater, man, because it's weird when I I go there a lot.
I looked it up, I thought, do you know what?
It does look quite good.
I mean, I I know you you know, there will be loads of candidates, but, you know, it's not the worst idea I've heard.
It's in London.
People talk about the need to be London.
It's got a great history of the game.
Wembley, of course, Conference Center for years, and then less successfully the arena.
I'm talking about the Masters, of course.
And, yeah, that place does look look look look rather nice.
It could suggest it.
As for the cameras, well, I I thought it might be a problem before that because I I remember being in the media seats.
But I have to say there there were mixed views.
I heard some other people on the Legend seats that said they didn't seem to worry too much.
That didn't really affect them.
So listen, it's one of those things.
As you say, that that's your most negative thought, then then that that's a good trip.
It brings it back when you hear things like that, doesn't it, Phil?
I like that the weather's always good.
The weather is often good, seems to
happen like that.
是的。
Yeah.
It does.
There was periods of real lovely sort of warmth that, you know, out there in Tudor Square, yeah.
Once a year's enough, but once a year, we're riddership.
对。
Yeah.
Was it?
I googled that.
Is it the Troubadour Theatre?
Is that
The Troubadour.
That's it.
It did look very nice.
是的。
Yeah.
I think it said 1,200 seats.
So about the right size for for the gap years.
是的。
Yeah.
I don't know.
Hopefully, they're considering all sorts of options.
I know we sort of got this impression that it's probably gonna be somewhere we've been before and now for ease, but hope they're just looking at all these places and taking them into account because, yeah, that did look good.
And, yeah, I think maybe the I've heard the same thing that cameras weren't as bad as maybe people thought.
So maybe that was an expectation thing.
It's Andrew there saying he hadn't really thought, considered it, and it was a bit annoying.
But I think some of the people maybe booked their seats wondering if it was gonna be bad and maybe wasn't as bad as they thought.
So it could have just been sort of how you're going into looking at it.
But, no, that was a lovely enough, Andrew.
Very much enjoyed the positivity of the world championship because it is a great time of year.
I think that's that is true.
And that was I'm no good at sort of ranking them compared to other years, but that was a really excellent world championship even by the high standards of the world championship.
So here's Owen Harris.
你好。
Hi.
Thanks for all the podcasts throughout the 2526 season.
I didn't miss a single one.
Very impressive, Owen.
My question is, in my opinion, the shootout has been a great success, and I think Blackpool is the perfect place for it.
Now that we we know Big Break is returning, should that also be a ranking event?
Thanks, Owen.
I think Owen's being a bit playful here, but, you never know.
What about if they get if they got every tour player on so everyone had a chance, stranger things have happened.
是的。
Yeah.
I think it's just it comes on the category of great banter, this, doesn't it?
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Banter.
But do you know what it does, Phil?
It does give us the chance to say Big Break is back, and that's something that when we returned last week, we we didn't mention.
So Owen very helpfully pointing us in that direction.
I have to say one thing.
I didn't realize Paddy McGinnis was so unpopular.
It made me feel a bit foolish.
I don't have a much of an opinion on him.
I liked him on Phoenix nights.
I think a lot of people have got this Question of Sport Top Gear double thingy in fairness, but neither is really relevant for me.
I don't haven't really watched Question of Sport properly since Ian Botham and Bill Bowman were captains.
I didn't even watch the John Perry era that much, so it wasn't a factor for me.
And I've never really watched Top Gear because I I I'm not really a big Cars person.
I've gotta be honest.
So, yeah, I think it'll be good, isn't it?
I mean, it's it's good news for the game.
Snooker back on the telly.
I'll definitely watch.
I think most of us will.
I did see a few people say it's it's a daytime show, but that could mean a 6PM slot.
So that's my slot.
对。
Yeah.
I think that is right.
06:00.
对。
Yeah.
I googled that because BBC daytime goes up to half six or seven.
It's just a sort of how they portion out their scheduling.
But, yeah, you when you hear daytime, you think half twelve or something, don't you?
But I think it is his Warehouse of Games was, I think, the Richard Osman quiz show.
Right.
That
daily slot there.
Oh no, it's great news for the game.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, it's a personal opinion on Paddy McGuinness.
I think I don't mind him.
I was a bit sort of underwhelmed, I guess.
I think sort of just a bit of like an obvious choice.
And his style is a bit naff for me, but at the same time, I don't dislike him really.
And I guess he's a big snooker fan.
That's why he was actually on, you know when Paul Scholes went to The Crucible, he does that podcast with McGinnis, and Scholes was raving about his experience about going there.
McGinnis was so jealous about how he didn't take him with him.
So I think he is a genuine sting.
不,我
No, I
didn't know that.
Didn't Paul know Scholes paid for his ticket, by the way.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
He just turned up.
But it was great.
I don't know if anyone's heard that.
It's called the Gunder Bad and the Football with Nicky Butt.
But he was saying he was just looking if there was tickets paid, there was one.
He just bought it on his phone and went on his own, and he wasn't sort of special guest or anything, but he didn't know where he was supposed to go, and he asked someone, and they were like, oh, you're Paul Scholes.
They just showed him around, and he was just like, it's the best experience I've ever had.
He was he was so, like, buzzing about it.
It was really nice.
But, yeah, so we'll see how it goes.
But, yeah, certainly good news that he's back for the exposure of the game to big audiences that time, I guess.
Be pretty good.
是的。
Yeah.
I see a drawback at all with it.
I mean, I think Henry is a very good choice.
I did see a few people will say, well, wouldn't the aforementioned Rich Lozman, wouldn't wouldn't that be the best choice in being a great snooker?
But to be fair, two or three people that I really respect that work in that business say he wouldn't this is their view, is that he he wouldn't quite have had the right energy for that, they didn't think.
They didn't think his energy was what what was what you would need in that role.
So I think you've got something to say.
没有。
No.
没有。
No.
没有。
No.
I think that's fair.
They obviously got like an idea of what they want, and that's probably my guess.
是的。
Yeah.
I think Chris Hammer from Sporting Life was doing some of his social media video.
He asked all the players on.
He asked me, actually.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
On who who is so there's all sorts of range of people, but I've put on that, I I said Tim Key and Steve Davis, but that is a whole different type of energy.
I mean, I think that would be hilarious, but that's not 06:00 in a weekday energy.
That's that's not that that sort of vibe, but I think that would be ideal.
对。
Yes.
I I think I mentioned Ken Doperty.
It it was swung upon me a bit there.
The comedian I went with, James A.
Caster, that's only because I know him.
He's the first person that came to mind.
But yeah.
Wow.
That's all that's all interesting.
对。
Yeah.
I I do I do that sporting life thing.
In fact, I don't know if I should say this, but Chris Hammer sort of dropped me a line just afterwards when when the news came through and said, that's why Henry wouldn't talk about it.
So he he may have already known that then.
There you go.
But, yeah, it wasn't that long after the World Seniors that we heard that news, I don't see a particular drawback, you know, at all, really.
I mean, I think it's a, yep, good exposure for the game.
I presume it's gonna be the same format.
I'd be interested to hear if we all snookering you tonight.
I don't know you I've not heard whether that's gonna be snookering you tonight.
I hope it is.
It'd be interesting to see how Henry takes on the Virgo role because, yeah, the the jazzy waistcoats and the trick shots and stuff.
You can't just imagine him doing that really.
Maybe they'll have to change that a bit.
是的。
Yeah.
I think you have to make it his own, won't he, by doing doing having his own sort of, you know, traits with it.
But, no, looking forward to Big Break for sure.
That that's coming soon then to the BBC.
And we move on then to Robert McGraw.
By the way, the Owen, nice little bit of bantam.
You know, of course, very well that the shootout shouldn't even be a ranking event.
Never mind, Big Break.
But on to Robert Maguire.
I've looked through the new calendar, and there's far too many events in the North Of England.
Why aren't tournaments better spread throughout the country?
I live near Bristol, and we have had a serious big event in the Southwest for many years.
It feels like we've been totally forgotten down here.
Well, I mean, the calendar's hard to sort out.
I I I do think they're quite spoilt in the North.
I mean, I I think it's just the the way it goes.
It happens that Sheffield's a no brainer, the home of the greatest event of all.
York's now become very established in a brilliant way.
So there's no criticism in a way.
It's just the way it's worked out.
Now Manchester's thrown into the mix for another massive event.
It's like almost the very, very biggest events in the game or most of them all in the North Of England.
That's the way it goes.
I mean, I think the Southwest is a big region, really.
I mean, it goes a lot further down than the Bristol down to, you know, Penzance and place up into a few times, which I I love going to, and also Devon and Cornwall generally.
You know, I thought I thought, well, there have been events in the past in South Wales.
I I think Cheltenham's not too far from Bristol.
I know that, because I stayed in Cheltenham in Bristol when I've been to cover Cheltenham racing.
But, you know, yeah, it's hard it's hard to do it really.
There are pockets that always feel forgotten, but, you know, there are only so many events you can have in The UK.
And I guess, Phil, in in I mean, it's only a guesstimate, but in the years to come, we'll have fewer events in The UK, won't we?
Because slightly more will go elsewhere.
That's that's probably how it should be.
So, you know, maybe pockets of the country will feel even more forgotten.
But, yeah, I do think I do think, you know, the North Of England is blessed if you happen to live in that region, but I guess that's just the the way the nature of events have have evolved,
对。
Yeah.
And I suppose quite often thinking about Britain as well.
So you're sort of trying to think of sort of central ish points for the for the whole of The UK to an extent.
Because if you go in proper daily down in the Southwest, that that is really hard and far to get to for anywhere really.
But yeah, there could certainly be more down that way.
Cheltenham, he said, I think that that's not really, that's not that way really.
The most, that's the most they've got.
It'll be down to money, won't it?
A lot of the time, you know, if you go to places like you're thinking of like Bristol and Bath and places like that, just anecdotally going there as a tourist, you know, it's like going to London, isn't it?
Which is very expensive places to host things, I imagine.
But yeah, losing South Wales as well has been a shame.
That's been a whole different conversation.
But yeah, of course, in an ideal world, they'd be as spread out as possible.
And definitely I do feel lucky being in Sheffield and having York just up the road and Manchester the other way is very good.
Even Telford's not very far away either really.
So yeah, we do feel blessed up here.
But then the North Of England is just tragically overlooked so many other things in life.
So we'll take snooker.
Thank you very much.
