Hello, and welcome to a new episode of Talking Snooker with Phil Haigh and Nick Metcalfe.
Once again talking about the game we all love.
没错。
We are.
And we're gonna talk about a very special person in the game this week, and we're joined by a very special guest as well-to-do so.
We really are, Phil.
Absolutely right.
This new episode of the podcast is going to be all about Paul Hunter.
It was twenty years ago that Paul tragically died at the age of 27.
A three times Masters champion and twice Welsh Open winner, Paul had established himself as one of the world's best snooker players.
He was known for his flamboyance and charisma, which put the Beckham of the Bays on the front page of newspapers as well as the back.
The snooker world continues to remember Paul with great affection, and we want today to remember not just the obvious sadness of losing Paul, but some of his successes on the table and the joy he gave snooker fans everywhere.
And we are honored to be joined by Paul's great friend and fellow star of The Bays, Matthew Stevens.
Matthew, hello, and thank you so much for joining us.
你好。
Hi.
How are you?
No problem.
It's a pleasure.
It's a pleasure to come on.
Well, thank you so much, and I know you...
Lots of memories you've got of Paul and your great friendship.
Let's start at the beginning of that friendship, shall we then, and just just ask, you know, when did you first meet Paul Hunter?
First met Paul.
It was in Hemsby, Holiday Camp.
It was the semi final, actually.
I was 13 and Paul was 11, so you're looking at 1990, and I remember this little blonde kid walking in his bow tie, a handsome little thing.
Yeah, and I managed to win three-two if I remember correctly, since that day we became very close.
How quickly did you become friends?
Mean, was there a bit of a rivalry early doors?
Obviously you were both top juniors.
Yeah, there was.
Obviously, from the Ponton's days, and then we used to travel to Leicester.
We used to play in many finals in pro ams and junior tournaments, and we became good friends, very good friends, and ended up I used to go to Leeds and stay in his house with his parents and his sister, Leanne, and he used to travel down to Wales and stay with me for the weekend.
We used to practice seven, eight hours a day together from the age of like 12, and that's when our games became gradually better.
We turned pro then at the age of like 16, 17, and he was a year after me.
But yeah, I think we help each other, our games, you know.
That's how we improve really quickly.
Think from the age of like between 13 and 17, you know, our standards became really good, and we were talked about as probably one of the two best kids at the time.
It's probably quite hard to remember going back to like being 13, 14, but what was it that made you click so much at the start?
Obviously, the love of the game is there, but there was something that must have clicked between you as pals.
Yeah, looking back, I think it's because we realized that I thought he was the closest to me at the time, as in standard wise.
And like I say, we just helped each other.
I respected his game, and I think it was the same with Paul about me.
But then we used to practice, we used play first to eighteens over a couple of days, and we just hated losing to each other.
You know, we had the braggers right.
Yeah, we had some fantastic practice games.
You know, we were out in out in my my garage until three, 4AM practicing.
That soon changed when we were 19, 20.
That was more like night clubs then, but you know.
But as kids, you couldn't scrape us off the table.
Then turning professional so young, and then I guess you're spending all their time up at the Norbrek, what was that like?
I bet that was sort of an education in becoming a man.
Yeah, it's it's hard to look back.
We were babies.
I've got two kids now, well, sick kids, 22 and 18, and to think I was a couple of years younger than my youngest, which by the time you think you're a grown adult, but you're basically a baby and you're spending three, four months in Blackpool at a time and basically living your dream because you're playing Snooker every day, winning all these matches.
It wouldn't suit me these days, you know, playing all those matches, but at the time it was just, well, there's nothing else I wanted to do really.
I did like your understated quotes on the on the WST website.
We had one or two late nights.
I like that.
Just that
we we were quite naughty.
So, I mean, you you you had a great time when you're gallivanting around.
That must have been sort of glory days, burning the candle at both ends.
Oh, definitely, yeah.
We were in Thailand and China at the age of 17, 18, and over there for a week or ten days.
And if we'd lost, we'd stay for an extra week.
Put it away, yeah, there were some late nights and good times, yeah.
Of course there was.
Tell us about sort of Paul's game.
Was obviously good very quickly.
I don't think he had a great amount of time for school, did he?
I think he just wanted to get on and play the game.
What was it about his actual snooker that impressed you?
It's just his temperament mainly.
You know, He had such a flamboyant way, and if he missed the ball, never shook his head or he was just elegant around the table, and I'll never forget his middle ball popped in as a kid.
If you notice, I think when he won the Masters that year, the pinks into the middle, you know, under pressure.
He was the best middle pocket pot I've ever seen, mainly his attitude.
You know, we'd go on about that match when he lost to Ken, and you know, it was heartbreaking, but you never knew whether he won or lost, but that's what made him such a popular person as well.
Know, he took defeat so graciously.
When did that came from?
Was that his dad Alan that may have given him some of that, or was it just in built in pool anyway?
I'm interested because so many players wear their heart on their sleeve, don't they?
They get affected.
Every human's different, but as you say, he had that way of being level headed.
I wonder how that came about.
I don't know.
Think things like that.
I think he's just born with.
Did show it once he got into the tell room, and he did sling his keel about a little bit, but he'd never actually show it to the world, but I think we're all the same.
He disappointed, but he certainly got over it quick.
He was making pretty big impressions quite early on as a pro, you know, getting to a semi at 17 and then winning a tournament at 19.
Was that all coming as a surprise, or did you sort of expect that kind of stuff to happen when you turned pro?
Yeah, we did.
Like I said, we used have so many practice sessions together at 16, even 17, 18, the way up through the professional career, and you know, not being big headed or anything, but we used to see the top pros at that age, and we used think, oh, we can beat them.
So I just thought it was a matter of time before, you know, one of us broke through.
When you saw that, think it was the Welsh Open, he got to the semi final, and then beating Ken a couple of years later in the final.
We just basically knew we were going to win something soon, you know.
I was reading an interview with him just before we started actually from years ago obviously, but I think he said that that winning so early maybe went to his head a little bit, and he had a couple of years and maybe enjoyed himself a bit too much after that.
Is that fair to say?
Yes, because, you know, he chucked in the deep end, really.
Like I said, we were still babies at that time, you know, with all this, you know, tens and tens of thousands in the bank at that age, you know, and buying nice cars, 30, 40,000 pound new cars, you know, that shouldn't really be done.
But, yeah, I suppose you've got to pinch yourself really, because we were both showing off.
Had an M3 convertible.
I think I was 19 or 20.
And yeah, I think it did get to our heads a little bit, but I think that's just natural.
Yeah, it's a fine line, isn't it?
Because you've to enjoy it.
Mean, there's not too many people that can be that successful and wealthy at a young age, you know.
You've got to make the most of it, but I suppose you've to maintain some professionalism.
But it's tough unless you've got someone really monitoring everything you do.
Like I said, you know, you don't know...
You you're winning all this money at young age, and you're thinking invincible really until, you know, you start losing a few matches, and then it's basically head down again and practice again until you get your next win.
I mean, I know there wasn't maybe as many tournaments as you get in today's game, but he didn't know if I a love affair with the Welsh, didn't he?
We've already mentioned it.
He got to that semi.
He won it in '98, and I was laughing, actually thinking, it's like a who's who of who's in the commentary box now, his run.
I was literally beating Neil Folds, Steve Davis, Nigel Bond, Alan McManus, Peter Ebden, and John Higgins.
I mean, he's beaten some absolute.
I know there are people at different stages of his career, but if you're gonna get yourself thinking I've made it, you know, as a teenager to do that, Matthew, that was quite stunning.
He loved Wales.
He definitely had a love affair with Wales.
Like I said, you know, he grew up a lot of his early days staying with me and my parents.
So yeah, we always just have a laugh because I could hardly win a match in the Wales Open, and I went up for the finals actually when he when he played in them.
Yeah, we we had a good party after he beat Ken.
Ken was out as well, and even the year he lost to Ken as well.
所以……
So...
What were you saying before, if you don't mind, about a nice Facebook message that was put up?
Yeah, my sister, and obviously we were very close as a family.
Paul looked at my sister like an older sister, you know, and yeah, she was just I could probably send it to Phil after the Zoom meeting or something if he wants to see.
It was really touching, and yeah, I did have a tear.
Yeah, of course.
Because not only are you so pally, of course, as you, you know, you suggested you're staying together at tournaments, you're traveling everywhere, your dads were great pals together, weren't they?
So it was almost like the the meeting of families, wasn't it?
You were just incredibly close.
Yeah, we were.
Yeah, it goes back to the Ponton's days.
Was loads of different families.
Yeah, you know, parents used to meet up with his parents.
We used have a few drinks, and me and Paul used to be practicing, they used to have a few drinks together, and we got very close.
There was David Gray's parents and so many others, you know?
Yeah, it became a get together really, you know, in the Ponton, Pristatin and Hemsby.
Like I said, yeah, we've become very close.
And what was it like you were playing, when you met on like the Pro Tour in really big games and world championships, UK's, Masters?
Was that an odd experience as you were so close?
Yeah, it was never easy, but we used to practice so often together.
They were each other's games inside out, and yeah, you know, he beat me a few times.
I beat him, and it wasn't nice to play in, but you know yourself, you know, a lot of you are friends these days, and you bump into each other all the time, so you know, it's just one of those things, unfortunately.
That's the thing with playing snooker as an individual sport, and you're bound to play each other at times.
I watched back that...
There's your whole game at the world championship where it went to the deciders on YouTube.
I went to the deciding frame today, and I don't know if you remember how you felt, but you looked so nervous before that decider.
I mean, you obviously went and got over the line, but you were sort of swigging water and the handshake looked pretty nervy.
Can you remember what it was like?
It pops up now and again on my YouTube, and, you do watch a few of the shots towards the end.
I think I was behind it that much, if I remember right.
I think I was 12, 10 behind.
Yeah, you were.
Came back.
Yeah, I remember Paul missed so many chances to get over the line, and yeah, it was a weird sort of game because the standard wasn't very good, don't think, if I can remember right.
It was just one of those nervy matches, and I literally fell over the line.
Fallen memories, but it was a nice match to be involved in, I gotta say.
And what what is that like after the match?
You see that you're such good pals.
You know, would you would you give him some space, or would you just be as normal after sort of such a tight, important game?
I think we actually shared an apartment together, so it was straight back.
I just poured him a vodka, and then we're sweet as a nap then.
Yeah, he'd be alright then after a couple of...
Vodka and orange was his tipple.
Vodka and orange juice.
哇。
Wow.
Feels of its time, vodka and orange juice.
And were sort of sharing rooms all over the world then, were you?
Yeah, we were.
Like in China, we used to like you know, we get your own rooms, we always used to share, and then we used to go to Sheffield and get an apartment with Brandon because we were like a team as well, so we used to get a nice penthouse in Sheffield and spend...
Well, hopefully it was the two weeks in Sheffield together, and yeah, it was just a good environment to be in.
We used to have a great laugh together, you know.
It was more like a little holiday than rather competing.
Is that a hard balance to strike as well, because you must have been having so much fun a lot of the time, and you've got to remember that you've got matches to try and win.
Yeah, I think that's why we were both pretty laid back whether I win or lose.
It probably rubbed off on each other, you know, because we grew up so young and I suppose you know, we, yeah, picked up with him, you know, because like I said, he he was so laid back, and I think that rubbed off of me as well.
It makes an awful lot of sense.
I talked about the Welsh, but of course, no tournament was ever more associated with with Paul than the Masters.
He had some incredible success there.
I mean, just as a general overriding question and thought about it, Matthew, he was such a sort of charismatic character, Paul.
He's almost like the Masters seemed to sort of suit him with that one table.
It was the Wembley Conference Center in those days.
He could be a bit of a showman maybe about it.
Is that...
Is it too simplistic to say that?
Because he bloody loved that tournament, didn't he?
Well, believe it or not, he absolutely hated it for the first
好的。
Okay.
I've got that wrong.
不是。
No.
Well, no.
Until his first ever match was, he beat me.
Phil could have a look at the record books.
I think he didn't win a match until I think it was the 2001.
He beat you on the way to winning it that first year, didn't he, I saw?
If we could have a look, did he win...
Was that his first ever match he won there?
Think that's right, but I'll double check.
The Masters is a funny tournament, isn't it?
Because you can have years and years of not winning because you've had a similar thing yourself afterwards, didn't you?
And yet, if you just have a good year and blitz it, you can go all the way else.
He beat me in 2001, because I was a defending champion then, and he managed to beat me six five first round.
It a great match actually, I'll never forget that.
And then he went on to win the tournament, and like I said this many times, this story, I think it was just after he won the semi final, my dad passed away, the same week that Paul won the tournament.
Obviously, I didn't tell Paul until I spoke to him after he won I think it was the morning after he won the tournament.
So it was bizarre.
I was mad at how things work out.
Paul was known for the Masters, and obviously if I'd have beaten Paul that year, then I wouldn't have probably finished off the tournament because my dad passed away so suddenly, and the Masters has become his tournament, and I've got the memories for the wrong sort of reasons, but it does seem very special every year, you know, it comes around.
I mean, I know that was a massively devastating blow for you, and I'm sure Paul would have been a big supporter that time when you did lose your dad.
Yeah, he was.
Yeah, It was quite strange actually because he'd won the tournament and he was elated, and then he obviously had to tell him about my dad because they were very close, and he was going from a high to something because it was such a sudden death for my dad.
And, yeah, he was devastated, and from being...
Lifting that trophy to Phil was later to tell him that name was...
It wasn't nice at all.
I, you know, I felt it was hard.
It was tough to to tell him.
I'm sure it was.
The thing about those those finals that Paul played was, he was always a long way behind, wasn't he?
The the Fergal one is he was well behind on the the first session.
We gotta talk about plan b.
That's the thing that always comes up with with Paul.
It'll be remiss of us not to mention it.
I mentioned the front pages at the at the top.
And, of course, that's the thing that put him maybe most on the front pages more than anything else, Matthew.
What did you think when you heard plan B?
Did think, that's typical Paul.
What a cheeky rascal.
Yeah, that's Paul all over.
You know, he didn't care what he said.
You could get away with so many things, Paul, because he had such a sweet and innocent face.
Going back years ago when he used to stay in the house and ask my mom to get him breakfast, but he had such a sweet smile, innocent smile, but we knew exactly what he was like deep down.
Yeah, no, going back to the plan B, was...
Was that the year?
It wasn't the Fergal year, was it?
我
I
think it was the Fergal year actually, there's a bit of...
Some but people say it was mild, but I think I've...
I did check-in a few places.
Me and Phil were checking today.
Not that it matters greatly, but I think it was the Fergal year.
是的。
It was.
好的。
Alright.
行。
Okay.
My great.
Phil, can you back me up on that?
因为我
Because I
know Yeah.
I did Google it because I've heard I've heard both those stories told, but I'm pretty sure it
was the first one.
Oh, okay, right.
Well, going back to his finals, coming from six-two and seven-two down, the way he'd done it, and especially against Fergal, but especially against Mark Williams and Ronnie O'Sullivan, two of the best players in the world at the time, that's probably the first time it's probably ever happened to them, and for it to happen in the same tournament against the same player, it just shows it just shows how how good Paul was and how much grit he had.
Because obviously the Ronnie O'Sullivan one comes up with, you know, the John Virgo commentary, you know, saying how many censories he had.
That's a good clip of John.
And I was at the o two for, and that was actually one of the occasions I remember with such great fondness.
It was an electric night there.
It was a great comeback against Mark Williams.
As you say, then beating Ronnie a couple of years later, that was kind of typical of Paul, really.
He would take it to the biggest players in the game, wouldn't he?
He he would never sort of shy away from those sort of, you know, big matches, and it just said everything about him to come back against those guys.
He he must have felt at that time just on top of the snooker world.
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, like I said, to beat Mark Williams and Ronnie O'Sullivan from the huge deficit that he was in at the time was yeah, because he won so many frames so quickly.
Was so quick, and you know, like, he he made three or four centuries against Ronnie, and, well, you saw Ronnie's at in the end of the match.
Like, Ronnie, you know, didn't look that disappointed because he knew Paul obviously played really well to come back, and that was Paul all over.
He was a big time player, and it's just a shame that we wouldn't have known how far he would have gotten in the world championship because got he to one semi final of the world championship, and it's just a shame that we didn't see how far he could have actually got and how many times he would have won the world championship.
Yeah, that's the thing that hurts me more than anything.
Yeah, I mean, you're saying like how many times he would have done it, so in your mind there's no doubt he would have won it at least once.
Yeah, because you forget actually how young he was when he did pass, you know?
At the time we thought we were quite old, you know.
I was like 29 and Paul was a couple years younger, year and a half younger, but looking now, looking back, he was still a baby in the game, you know, and he had so many years in front of him.
For me, you'd have definitely been multiple time world champion, you know, to win the Masters already three times before you passed away.
You know, how many times already won the Masters?
You know, it's...
就是……
It's...
That's the thing that knowing the and the unknown what would have happened, and you still think, Oh, what are you looking like now?
That's the hard part.
Yeah, and I think sort of stooker has changed so much in the last twenty years, whereas you know, what was considered old then is is not...
Has changed completely.
So maybe people would have thought that was a relatively normal thing to be doing those kind of things then.
But if you think of it, if there was a player now in the game who'd won what he has by '27, then that would blow people's minds.
没错。
That's right.
You know, I'm 50 now, and twenty years ago if you played someone at 50, it'd be like, Oh, that's the easiest draw in the world.
You see with Mark and Ronnie and John, they're in their 50s, guys in their 40s and 50s are still sort of dominated apart from few of the Chinese players.
There's not very often you don't see someone late 40s, early 50s in the semifinals and finals these days, so it's mad to think how the game has changed.
How old was Steve Davis when he won the Masters?
Was that the oldest?
Was he in his early 40s or something?
I think he was 39 ridiculously.
He was still a puppy.
These days, was a youngster, 39.
That's me in my prime ten years ago.
I was watching an interview an interview back from...
That Paul was doing.
It was actually in the year where...
In the year that he didn't win it of the four years, so 2003.
And he'd just beaten Stephen Lee really heavily, and he said something like, oh, if I carry on playing like that, god help whoever I play.
And it was it was quite...
Was obviously very confident.
But like you said, it's something about his sort of face and just his lovely nature.
If someone else said that, it would have come across quite bad, but it didn't come across badly at all when he said it.
Yeah, exactly.
He spoke his mind.
If I heard someone else say I'd be like, Oh, what an idiot, but with Paul, he just had that honesty and he wouldn't hurt the fly.
Knew that by the way he spoke, and with that Yorkshire Leeds accent, butter wouldn't melt with Paul.
Well, he was loved by everyone.
Know?
No one had a bad word to say about him, and you hear that with a lot of the players.
We talk about Paul now.
And what was it like sort of outside of Snooker?
What what I don't know.
I guess you guys had some fun nights out, but what was he into?
Like, I know he's a football fan.
What sort of music was he into?
还有……
What...
How would you sort of paint a picture of it?
He obviously liked Leeds football, but he didn't really watch much of the football.
Just chilling out like myself, just used to watch films and he didn't really play much golf or anything.
He loved his holidays.
We used to practice a hell of a lot of snooker.
Always say now, we didn't really practice now these sort of days, but we just used to play seven, eight hours, nine hours every single day because we were still at little peak in those years because I suppose we didn't have that much time to enjoy.
I say yes, had some good times in tournaments, but you know, away from the snooker, we didn't really spend that much time to going on holidays or whatever because we were just playing and practicing all the time together.
That's another thing that you look back after all careers and now what we've been doing.
So we didn't really have time to do many other things because he was just snooker.
Said again in that interview I read from him today, he had a great line where he was like, Yeah, I'd like to be world champion, but I also like a drink and a cigarette.
It was just like that showed sort of his sort of what he was into, sort of just like normal things that sort of he enjoyed, but also relaxed.
But as you paint a picture there, like, so dedicated at the same time, like, you don't get to the levels that you guys have without being incredibly dedicated.
I used to smoke at the time as well.
Yeah, we used to go through some fags, know that, and a few bottles of vodka.
Yeah, but like you said, we were very dedicated at the time, yeah, because I obviously reached a lot of finals and semi finals and also winning the Masters as well.
Like you said, yeah, you don't do that at that young age without dedicating yourself and putting a lot of work in.
Yeah, was an animal on the table, Paul.
You know, we had to scrape him off Going back to the Masters' victories, like I said, not many people would do that.
Know, doing it once would have been something special, but to do it three times from behind, you know, it just showed how much of a gritty competitor he was.
He really was.
He was a wonderful competitor, and a great champion, and we should just have a a name check and say we are remembering, Paul Hunter here in the company of Matthew Stevens, who we're delighted to be joined by.
And this is Talking Snooker with Phil Haigh and Nick Metcalfe.
Hello, everybody.
It's Talking Snooker here, and we're remembering, Paul Hunter.
Now I'm sure, Matthew, you'd have helped each other through those inevitable times in your career where you had tough moments and and disappointing moments.
Obviously, one of Paul's most famous defeats was to Ken, Ken Duckertie in the world championship when he was a, you know, a long way ahead.
I'm I'm gonna come to an email in the moment, which is very nice if he remembers how sporting, Paul was about that both backstage and also, you know, out with the press.
But he was devastated.
I've been reading interviews within the last couple of days, and that was, you know, in a snooker sense devastating.
Would you particularly remember that defeat, and would you have had a few words in the ear to try and help him through that?
It was a crushing defeat, you know, from having one foot in the final against Can.
You know, I've been through it myself, know, a couple of times, so, you know, we did speak about it a lot, and he was, you know, basically asking how did you get through it?
Yeah, that was a tough one to take.
But but like I said, you know, we we talk about Paul, he is laid back, and it was it was a tough one to take, but he soon bounced back.
You know?
就是……
It's...
It was just another defeat.
Yeah, it's one of those things you gotta you gotta take them, I'm afraid.
I mean, snooker is such a lonely business, isn't it?
We know that.
You know?
And there's no one else out there to help you when you're suffering those moments and the other guys at the table.
But it it must have helped you both a great deal to know that at least you had someone that...
And, you know, I've heard from the likes of John Higgins, Selby, and everyone else at times, yes, they've got great mentors in their life, but there's nothing like a mentor that is also a player that understands implicitly everything you've got.
I think that's why people like Terry Griffith did so well as coaches, because guys knew, ah, he'd been there, and they'd they'd done that.
而且……
And that...
It must have been nice to at least have someone else that your age, your mate, that you could talk to afterwards.
You know, in every win and every loss, used to speak to each other, you know, well, we spoke every day on the phone, and especially if I was out of a tournament or he was in, your dog was phoned straight after the matches.
He'd be the first person I'd phoned, you know, and vice versa.
So it was nice to...
You know, because, you know, we performed, you know, in those high pressure matches, and we knew what we were talking about.
So it was good to have the knowledge that we've both been there and just to talk about it really.
And after I spoke to Paul and vice versa, we should be fine.
It was nice to have his advice on things, and we talk about the shots.
Yeah, so it's nice to have that, you know, friendship and knowing someone knows you inside out, and they know exactly what you're going through at the time.
当然。
Of course.
Let's just mention Daniel Clark.
It's a lovely email here from a really good voice in the game, and he mentions that Ken match among others.
He says, hi, Nick and Phil.
Thank you for doing this special Paul Hunter tribute episode.
It is a testament to just what a special player and person he was that twenty years after his passing, he is still so fondly remembered by everyone in the sport.
My first memory of really seeing Paul play was in the nineteen ninety six UK championship against Stephen Hendry.
There was this 18 year old playing Hendry at the peak of his powers and still seemingly without a care in the world, effortlessly flowing around the table with the most perfect cue action you'd ever wish to see.
Those days, matches were best of 17 throughout.
Although he led five three after the afternoon, Henry ultimately came back to win.
But Paul had certainly marked himself out as one to watch.
The other memory that has always stayed me...
With me was the two thousand and three world championship semifinal against Ken Doperty.
Obviously, as an Irishman, I was delighted to see Ken come back from fifteen nine to win seventeen sixteen.
But it wasn't just the result that stuck with me.
Instead, it was the extraordinary grace with which Paul accepted the defeat.
Firstly, in the arena when Ken potted match ball, but then also afterwards when he sought out Ken again backstage to wish him all the best in the final.
At the post match press conference, he spoke eloquently about how devastated he was to lose, but also reminded us that it's only a game and that he hoped to come back stronger in the future.
Unfortunately, that future was cut short in the most cruel way, but of course he was right.
It is only a game, a game that benefited immeasurably from having had Paul play it.
Regards, Daniel, and thank you, Daniel, for those thoughts.
They really are so so well, expressed by you there.
And I've spoken to people so many times over the years, Matthew.
They all they all mentioned Paul's reaction.
Every player reacts differently to moments, but that says so much about him because he said it was so crushing.
He still had enough about him in those moments to congratulate Ken, to say the right things in the press.
Was that just him?
It was, you know.
I'm sorry.
I'm charger.
好的。
Okay.
That's just Paul.
We were very similar in that way.
Think it's because like going back to what we used to talk a lot after defeats, and he'd seen me lose a final against Mark Willi from a big lead.
So, you know, for it to happen to him in the semi final of the world championship as well was, you know, it was it was heartbreaking.
But, yeah, that's...
I was just Paul all over.
You know, win or lose, you know, you you see some players now walking walking through the hotel lobby, and you can tell straight away whether they've lost or won, but with Paul, you'd have to ask him how he got on because he was that laid back.
You know what I mean?
Could tell by the player too, but you could never tell with Paul.
You know, We'd be straight in the bar, have a couple of drinks and just say, Yeah, like you said, it was just a game of snooker at the end of the day, but we all want to win, but it's not the end of the world if you do lose, you know?
It's such a brilliant sort of opposite things to have that he had that grit and determination on the table, like we said, to come back from all those massive deficits, but then to be fine afterwards.
It's bit like people talk about Mark Williams like that quite a lot.
Have both those things is like the perfect combination almost.
Yeah, it is.
Think a lot of people are just born with that, you know?
I often think about myself, it's not a good trait to have when you just take it so well because losing, you know, but I wouldn't change it anyway because I think there's too many mixed emotions in snooker players, and, you know, it can do your head in this game.
But if you can keep a balance of when you win, not to get too high and not to be too low when lose, I think getting that balance think is very important for, I think, maybe some longevity in the game as well, I think.
And it was really nice to hear Paul's name.
So I think it was last year when Wu Yusas won his first tournament, and there was quite a lot of comparisons between his game and Paul's game.
And obviously Wu's done unbelievable things now.
You've played him in a couple of great games.
You've had a nice little unexpected rivalry with with Wu.
Do you see what people say about comparing it to Paul?
And it's...
Do you see...
Did you think it was nice to sort of hear his games compared to, you know, the new great star of the sport?
I do see a very similar similar guy actually, though, the way they play.
He just floats around the table like Paul.
And when he's won these tournaments, I've seen him when he won in China last week, you know, not too many celebrations, just literally just get on with the next tournament.
I don't know whether when he won the world championship, was in shock or not because it didn't it didn't seem like it already.
He'd he'd won the world championship, but maybe I think he just knows how good he is and he expects to win, maybe.
I mean, said he's back on the practice table in the next week, so it was it was all business, wasn't it, from from getting that done?
Not too much farting.
Yeah, and to be honest, me and Paul was the same at that age.
We used to come back for a tournament.
The next day, we were back playing the first of 18 again, and yeah, you know, looking back, you didn't realize much you actually practiced because we were very dedicated, you know, and there were early teens and 21, 22.
So yeah, it definitely pays to practice, but you actually enjoy playing at that age.
Hard Is to think now, the idea of playing that much?
Because that must sort of fill you with dread probably these days.
It would be physically impossible to play that much now with my I'd be falling over every hour, so no, I stick to playing a couple hours a day, well, every other week.
I wanted to ask you one thing about obviously the trophy, the Masters got his name, and that's so great.
And it's it's great that we hear about him every year there.
But there was there was quite a period where it took to do that, and I think pretty much everyone in the game, well, now looks back and thinks that was crazy though it took so long.
Was was that a sort of a hard period for you as so close to him watching that people drag their heels on that?
I'm sorry, Phil.
We lost you there.
Oh, sorry.
I was saying about, obviously, the Masters trophy getting his name, which is superb, but it took quite a while for it to come through come through to that.
And then I think it was 2016 it it actually happened.
But was that quite hard for you as as someone so close to him to watch people almost drag their heels on that to get that done?
You know, I think that should have been demonstrated away, you know, after he passed away, but it did take too long in my opinion.
But now every year, you know, the Masters comes on the TV, everyone talks about Paul, it's his tournament, you know, and for me, for different reasons as well, it is a tough month when that comes along.
Obviously, Paul was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and sadly died in 2006.
I've heard you say before, and it's a great testament to Paul again, that he he never really moaned during the time he was ill.
You know, he he just...
He stayed like he was.
He didn't really change his character much at all.
That, again, that seems like, you know, classic Paul
in so many ways.
Yeah, well, I still sort thought about him.
I used to go to tournaments and, you know, to see him, you know, his bald head, bless him, and he could see and his eyes were stinging, and he could hardly see.
不。
No.
The courage he had was was remarkable, you know, I don't know how he did it, but, he'd never moan.
He'd never moan about it until, you know, until the very end.
You know, he's...
Never heard him moan once, which was just...
It's just the way he was.
And, yeah, looking back, it's just incredible how we played in those tournaments.
He traveled to China in a bit of pain, but he just want...
He just loved competing.
It's incredible incredible man.
How did you find the strength to get through those times, Matthew?
Because I know how desperately sad it was for you.
I suppose it's like anything, once something happens, you just have to get on with it, you know, that's the way life is.
It's it's cruel, but, you know, it was very hard.
Still is to this day.
But, you know, you can't just stop.
You just gotta carry on, and that's what Paul would want you to do, that's what I do.
You know, I got a family to look after, and yeah, but it's just all good memories.
Now we have good chats, You know, my sister and my mom, and and, you know, I keep my kids.
Freddie was a baby when went to Jamaica for his for his...
Paul's wedding.
It's just fond memories.
You know, there's a lot to talk about, and and there's...
That's gets me through it, really.
当然。
Of course.
That's that's very well expressed by you.
Of course, we know about the Masters trophy.
It was too late, but thankfully, that was put right in the end.
The Paul Hunter Foundation was set up, we should say, which has done some absolutely sterling work over the years in giving a number of people, some from disadvantaged backgrounds, some disabled youngsters, you know, an opportunity to play and enjoy snooker.
I know it's done a great amount of work.
For a while, we had the Paul Hunter Classic.
The German Open Tournament was was called that.
So Paul's name lives on.
You talk about yourself and, you know, your family and talking about the memories, but everyone does his snooker, don't they?
You know, whenever I'm in a media room or around, whenever the Paul's name comes up, there's such a a feeling of respect and love for him really for what he meant for the game and what he did, and that must give you a lot of pride on behalf of your friend.
Yeah, it definitely does.
I know it's boring for me to say, but everyone loved Paul, and that's all I can really say about him.
You know, there's not many people you could say that about, you know, and just his character is, you know, we mentioned his losses and how how he took that, and he was laid back.
He's just everyone loved him for who he was and the character he was, and and that's...
I I miss him so much.
And I'm sure there's plenty of stories you can't tell, but on any of those nights out, are there any are there any anecdotes that stick in the mind that could be aired?
I know it sounds mad, but the vivid memory, it's so long ago.
You don't really remember him that much.
I know it sounds weird, but it seems like yesterday, but it seems like a million years ago.
It seems like it was another life, if you know what I mean.
Yeah, there's loads of stories, but no, I can't really tell them on you, I'm afraid.
Sorry.
I was absolutely right.
No, we had fantastic times, and I'm blessed to have spent it with Paul, traveled thousands of miles.
I think one of the good stories is when he went to China and he played Mark Williams, and I think scored I think it's still a record to this day.
I think he scored 20 points in five frames, and we and we...
And I used to we used to take the Micky at a pause, and we traveled thirty hours to just pot two balls or something, and...
So that that was a running joke for a while, and every year we used to qualify, so is is it worth you going out there?
Because he had a terrible record in China, if I remember right, but it's probably because of the late nights as well in China, suppose.
We haven't got a good record either either.
If you could look that up, I think he's made my score about 10 points or something against Mark Williams.
I guess you're both so laid back.
The way he's traveling is so many hours together and so tiring, stressful times, and I...
The sport you play is very stressful.
Did you ever, like, fall out?
Did you ever have any sort of tense moments, or are you so laid back it was always fine?
I can't really remember.
I was having an argument.
Probably did after a few drinks, but I was always sorted out the next day.
I think that's the same as most most close friends.
We probably got sick of each other from time to time, but when you're spending so much time with someone, I think that's bound to happen now and again.
And and one thing I think last for me, how how comfortable was he with...
Obviously, he knew he was a great snooker player, that was fine, but become this sort of almost like pinup boy, and if he's talked about the front and the back pages and the back of the base stuff.
Like, did he like that?
Was he comfortable with that?
Did he sort of take it as a as a laugh?
Like, what was his opinion on all that stuff?
Oh, he absolutely loved it.
He'd even put his roof down when it was raining on the convertible.
He used to love it.
His blonde hair blowing in the wind, the attention he used to get.
He used to absolutely love it, and yeah, that was Paul.
But he didn't really like going out that much, that's all I could say.
He liked his own company.
He did not have that many friends, And if he was about these days, there's no way on earth he'd be on Facebook or anything like that.
He wouldn't post anything because he a private person, Paul.
When he was on the snooker table, he used to love it, and he he used to show off in that way if you don't...
He loved that.
He loved entertaining people.
He was a special, special man.
Should we go do Richard Perrin's email, Phil?
I don't if you wanna do that one as I took the other one.
Can do.
Richard Perrin here.
Writing in advance of your Paul Hunter special, which is a lovely idea despite the obvious sadness that comes with it.
Had me thinking of my Paul Hunter memories, which sadly are reasonably limited, but they still resonate.
I first started watching snooker in the nineties with the classic Hendry era of dominance.
At the time, it felt like a matter of national importance who the world champion was at at that time.
Up there were the football and other sports.
I then remember when Henry's star started to wane, there was a new breed of contenders who we now know as the class of '92.
However, Paul Hunter was right there amongst them, albeit marginally later.
I remember thinking he and Ronnie had real star quality about them, and it felt like the future of snooker was bright.
Bright not only with quality, but with the potential for the sport to keep growing and being a matter of national interest.
Paul very much felt like he was there to stand toe to toe with Ronnie, not only in terms of playing, but also the ability to grab headlines, a certain star quality.
As a Ronnie fan back then, I remember seeing Paul as the main threat to him at that stage as Snooker's brightest talent.
Obviously, Snooker is nowhere near that level these days in terms of public interest, and some often cite lack of characters being the issue.
Whilst I'm not sure I agree with that, I do wonder now whether the sad passing of Paul in some ways contributed to this lack of national interest in the sport.
He just had something special about him that is hard to pin...
Pinpoint exactly it is.
It's just so sad we never got to see his truest potential.
That being said, we are lucky to have had him, and he has left his mark on the sport and will forever be part of the story of this wonderful game.
Thanks, Richard.
I think he's got a point there.
I mean, how big a star could he have been, you know, with another twenty plus years in the game?
Like, he would have been a superstar of of the game and sort of maybe wider British sport.
Who knows?
By the way, I was a lovely leader, Bill.
Really was.
Who knows?
Because when he passed, there was no social media, how the world's changed.
But for me, he had everything, you know, the looks, the cosmetic...
Oh, sorry.
I can't speak.
Sorry.
He he was just so special, and I think if he was about now, yeah, he would have been a major superstar.
I don't know if you wanna ask anything else, Phil.
I I think I'm I'm all out.
It's just one general one, I suppose, to finish off with Matthew.
You know, when when you think about...
I know you've spoken about lots of different aspects of your friendship, but when you think now about, you know, Paul and your time together, what would be the the general thing that would come to mind?
Just the feeling of of happiness, I guess, that you had such good times together.
A mixture mixture of emotions, really.
You know, we spent I knew Paul for fourteen years in the end.
It's not a long time, but it was as if we spent a lifetime together.
The hard part for me, like I said earlier, is to know what he would have achieved, and we often say, Oh, what would he look like now?
And we'll never know, but that's all I remember is a fantastic young man, but even more.
Was a very, very kind person.
He had everything and everything to look forward to, and sadly, he was cut short.
But you can look back at fond memories of him, you know, with what we said, the Masters victories.
Yeah, it was just looking back at so many good memories, but what would have been is what hurts me the most.
Well, of course, always sorry to hear you say that.
We know your heart goes out to you and should say thoughts with Paul's parents, Alan and Christina, daughter, Evie Rose, his family, all his friends that loved him, and of course, the snooker community that miss him so much.
And Matthew, to you, because I know you are such a great mate of Paul.
And listen, we are honored to...
For you to come on and talk to us.
We really are.
It's it's something that means a lot to us.
I know it'll mean a lot to people listening, and thank you so much for doing so.
Not a problem, Omar.
It's a pleasure to to come on and talk about my good mate, and hopefully you viewers will enjoy that and just getting to know the times me and Paul shared together.
Yeah, thank you very much for having me on.
Like Nick said, great honor, and thank you very much.
Much appreciated.
Because, you know, twenty years flies by.
There's a lot of snooker fans who are new to the game that may never have seen of Paul.
Mean, they'll all have heard of him because, you know, he rightly has spoken about a lot, but great to know more about him, and yeah, you're a perfect man to tell us all about that.
Well, cheers, Phil.
I appreciate that.
It was a pleasure to talk to you about him, and thanks for having me.
Well, thank you so much to to to you, Matthew.
That's Matthew Stevens there himself, one of the the game's great stars, of course.
Talking about the late Paul Hunter who we lost twenty years ago.
Phil, we're going to be back, aren't we, very soon to look ahead to Belfast?
But this episode was all about Paul who will...
We'll talk about, won't we, in us in the media and us in the game for years and years and indeed decades to come.
没错。
Absolutely.
And quite rightly so.
We look forward to doing it.
So, yeah, thanks for everyone for listening.
