Hello, and welcome to a new episode of Talking Snooker with Phil Haigh and Nick Metcalfe.
Once again talking about the game we all love.
确实。
Indeed.
And one of those great Sunday night records after a final, not not a classic final, I'm afraid.
It's a bit too one-sided, but it's been a memorable week at the Northern Ireland Open no less.
It really has, Phil.
No question about it.
This tournament, if anything, grows in gravitas each year.
I I was in Belfast for some of it, I'll tell you about that later.
It just has a certain standing now doesn't it?
Whether it's that city, that venue, it just feels like a a great stop on the tour frankly, great part of the calendar, And we gotta say, we have had a familiar winner despite a week of shocks, that classic trope, almost a classic of the genre, actually, and it's Kyren Wilson.
He has beaten Jak Jones in the final by nine frames to two.
It was a one-sided final, as you say, Phil.
It never really took off, never looked like going close, but credit to Kyren, he played really, really well.
We're gonna talk a lot more, aren't we, about matters on the table soon.
But, Phil, I think the right thing to do is, first of all, reflect on what has been clearly a very difficult time for Mark Allen.
We did see, didn't we, an interview on Tuesday, an extremely difficult to watch and heartrending interview for all of us when Mark spoke to Rachel Casey on TNT Sports.
That's after he lost four two to Jordan Brown at this Northern Ireland Open.
That was his first appearance since he lost to Wu Yissa in the semifinals of the world championship.
Let me recopy from the story I wrote for the TNT Sports website that day.
Rachel Casey asked Allen how he was, and he said, not good, if I'm honest.
Really overwhelmed.
I'm in a bad place at the minute, so even just to go out there and try was tough.
I think if I wasn't playing Jordan, I wouldn't have come back.
I felt like it was if it...
I was going to play one last time playing here at the waterfront where it all started in 2,005 against one of my best mates, I thought that was a better way to sign out.
Then asked by Casey if he is genuinely thinking of signing out, Allen said yes.
I just don't see a future with Snooker in it, if I'm honest.
It's sad to say because it's all I've loved to do since I was 12.
The last few months have been really difficult, and it sort of puts Snooker into perspective for me.
I've been flooded with support, but the problems are within.
At the minute, I'm just trying to survive, and that was the line that it finished on, which I think many of us will remember.
It was a heartwrending interview as I say.
It is, I think, very reassuring that Mark has sent out statements since, very moving statements on social media.
First, the day after that interview on Wednesday to say he has spent ten weeks at a mental health clinic.
He said, I see the light now that I couldn't see before, but I do now.
I also know it won't happen overnight.
I'm a work in progress.
And as we're speaking to Phil on a Sunday night earlier today, Mark posted another message saying completely overwhelmed by all the messages I've received since my statement.
As I continue my treatment and my recovery, I now know that I simply have to raise, more awareness around mental health in the future.
It's the best part of six weeks before the UK championship starts and all being well.
I'll be in a better place by then, but for now it's just one day at a time.
Thanks again for all your support.
It's meant so much to myself and my family.
Phil, we wish Mark well.
Everyone in Snooker, everyone in sport, all decent people everywhere wish wish Mark well.
And it has to be said, well, you know, it's been tough to watch it in recent days, and our hearts just go out to one of Snooker's most popular characters.
当然。
Of course.
That was a that was a horrible interview to watch.
Very brave for him to do it because he...
As he said in his statement, no one was making him.
I don't think anyone thought anyone was making him do that interview.
He clearly wanted to get something off his chest to some extent, and hopefully help to do so and hopefully encourage more support.
I think he had a good amount of support already, but as he said, they would be flooded with more since then.
And it seems to have had a positive impact by the way he's been speaking since, very much so actually, and he seems encouraged to talk about it more, which hopefully will help him and possibly even help others as well.
That's that's the good thing about sort of expressing these things.
So look.
It was that was a tough day for everyone involved there.
I felt obviously terrible for Mark and Jordan, and Rachel did a brilliant job, but that kind of been easy for her.
But it seems to have already had a positive impact, and, you know, that that the most recent stuff he said today on Sunday did sound you know, playing.
I don't wanna sort of make light of it by talking about the playing really, but it did sound like he was talking about playing at The UK, which didn't sound too likely when he was talking about maybe playing his last match.
So that shows a significant improvement in how he's feeling, And he posts some interesting stuff about, you know, how he's going through his daily sort of positive thoughts and things to be grateful for.
I think that's kind of, you know, almost standard practice for people sort of trying to get through these things, and it sounds like it's helping and it's all, yeah, it's all been good since that horrible day when it wasn't very good.
And yeah, heart goes out to Mark for what he's been going through.
It's all been a bit of a mystery, You know, people talking about that miss Black, and I I think we could clearly say it's not down to it's down to a lot more than, you know, a snooker match.
So continue to send all our love to the people going through what he's going through, and I hope he comes out stronger, which I'm sure he will do.
Indeed, Phil.
It it was such a tough watch.
I know many many people...
I'm sure you're the same have been speaking to me about it, people that wouldn't normally, you know, talk about snooker.
It's something that so many people, so many of us do go through in life.
It can happen to anyone.
That's that's really the message, you know.
It it can happen to anyone.
And you know, one line that really stuck with stuck with Mark for me from that bad interview is the problems are within.
And that's right, you know, the support is wonderful, and as he's rightly said, it's been brilliant and very moving throughout snooker sport, and people from politics I've seen posting, and, you know, all sorts of people from all walks of life, and that's great.
But sometimes those problems, you know, you have to find that strength yourself.
Listen, Mark's getting help.
That's brilliant.
As you say, we all wish him just the very, very best, and I'm glad you mentioned Rachel Casey.
You know, thank god she was on duty because her humanity came through.
Never mind her skills as a broadcaster, which of course are top level.
Her humanity, her decency, her kindness came through, and it was a very important part of that interview actually, and she rightly is getting a lot of credit and deservedly so.
And Phil, we, I think, also gonna do the thing that is appropriate, which is not, you know, talk about Mark ad nauseam now.
We must give him the space, and we'll do so, won't we, to get himself into an even better place.
That's obviously the hope for all of us.
And I would also...
We would also like to say that if you or someone you know is struggling, you can call 116123 right now for free support.
That's on the phone 116123.
That's free, no charge, confidential, and available 247, and they can also go online.
你可以访问samaritans.org。
You can visit samaritans.org.
We all, Mitch, Mark Allen, all the very best.
Phil, events on the table then in the Northern Ireland Open.
Well, Kyren Wilson, let's go straight to you and say, eleventh ranking title.
You can't keep a good man down.
How often do we talk about that trope of shocks throughout the week?
Yet who's the last man standing?
It's one of the familiar ones.
And even, yeah, and even the final, you know, Jak Jones is not in the top 16, but he's won two tournaments this season.
And if it wasn't him, it was gonna be Mark Williams very nearly there, so one of the all time greats.
So, yeah, it just goes to show how many good players there are.
We talk about it all the time, but you can lose seemingly just like endless shocks for the first two or three days, and then you still got big names right at the end.
And, yeah, Kyren was fantastic, worthy winner, really excellent.
He had, you know, the the only wobbly he had was the semifinal he nearly lost to Sam Craigie.
Arguably, he should have lost to Sam Craigie.
Certainly, Sam would have been thinking that.
But in the final, he he dominated it, didn't he?
He he was fantastic.
And, yeah, it's...
Kyren's just had a funny time, isn't he?
Because it seems ages since he's won a ranking title or even, like, threatened to win a ranking title, but his last one was only last year.
It was the first half of last year, so it was about eighteen, nineteen months ago, I think.
And since then, he's won the masters.
He won the Shanghai masters.
He'd been in the Shanghai masters final this season.
He was in the court final of the English not long ago.
So so it's it's it felt like he's been away, but he he sort of hasn't.
Not for very long anyway.
And now he's very much back.
And if he can play like he did for most of that tournament, certainly in the final, then he'll be winning more tournaments very soon.
Absolutely right.
And it was just one of those where, you know, you hope for a close final.
That's what the public there wanted.
They wanted, you know, that Belfast crowd to see it go deeper into the Sunday night.
You know, it it it just didn't happen.
You know, Kyren was just excellent in in the final.
Three centuries and two breaks in the sixties in the first session from Kyren to take a, a six two lead.
It was, Jones needing that fast start in the evening.
It didn't happen.
Wilson won three more frames for victory, finishing with a break of 75.
You're right to talk about Jak Jones.
What a season.
He's playing it downfield, but we don't have to.
I see how big old David is saying to him, you give yourself a credit eventually.
He's not only doing so yet.
他……
He...
He's that type really.
He's got a lovely way about him really, not not talking up his wares too much, but, you know, he's he's looking the part, isn't he?
Two ranking events are now final.
My goodness me.
So Kyren's all about going past his his mate, Jimmy White.
I mean, it's a bit funny because back in Jimmy's day, they weren't all...
Always ranking events, but he certainly...
When he started off, there's always a bit of nuance there.
But, nevertheless, Kyren in good numbers now with 11.
Lots more to come, I'm sure.
And I had a feeling they they chucked...
I've got evidence.
They chucked it at me at track radio.
They took the mic out of me one morning when I on there feeling.
They said, you can't keep naming everybody.
Who are gonna go to win it?
Threw it at me.
I said, you know what, Kyren?
I I did say ahead of the last 16, that's not exactly a dramatic call.
It's only really Kyren and Mark Williams are big hitters, but I did say it wasn't just because who he was.
I just thought...
Love the Kyren Wilson, Teptroyo, our new match, by the way.
You know, Neil Fowl said it was the performance of the week.
I thought it was one of the...
At that stage, I thought it was one of the performances of the season.
Teptroyo was brilliant to lose four two.
It was thrilling to watch, and there there's just something about Kyren in that match.
I thought, god.
He's really gonna take take some stopping.
But, well, we'll go maybe from the last 16 stage shortly.
But, Phil, let's talk about the shocks.
I mean, they all went, didn't they?
You know, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby, Judd Trump, Neil Robertson, Sean Murphy, all out early.
Now Mark Williams told me on Radio Snooker that he thinks it's definitely down to the tiered system.
You know, he thinks players are coming.
They're battle hardened from qualifiers.
And lots of people do agree with Mark.
And you know what?
There's no hard and fast rules.
It's not an exact science, but logic surely points to the fact that he's got a good case there, isn't he, Mark?
I mean, it makes sense.
They definitely played more games, obviously, but often they haven't played more...
Obviously, it's been a while as well since then.
You know, there was no there's no matches for nearly two weeks before this.
So, yeah, they played more games over the season.
Are are they really...
They still has Matt Sharp going into the Tordent after them?
I don't know.
You'd have to ask them.
Think it's worth all these...
We've talked about the tiers and the and the systems a lot of them in this.
There's pros and cons and ways of explaining both sides.
I mean, that the way Mark explained it made sense, and it seems to be playing out, you know.
There's there's a lot of deep runs for non top 16 players even if the top 16 players ends up nicking the title at the end.
Qualifiers are going far.
But I suppose the other the other side of the coin is when the top 16 players do win some games on that one year ranking list, they they don't have to win so many to get really far.
You know, still, was looking at the live one today, and Ronnie O'Sullivan is still above Liam Davies on there, which may end up being the sort of season illustration of this point because Liam Davies seems to be winning every time I see him, and Ronnie seems to be losing every time I see him.
But Ronnie with a few at the right point, and he's still above him.
But, yeah, no.
Certainly, what Mark made sense, what Mark said made sense, and he made a good point, and this again, you could spin this both ways.
Like, the the qualifiers have to win one, two, three, plus four games to play the top 16 player, which is hard work.
And then the one top 16 player has to win one match to win more money than them.
So you wanna be the top 16 player.
But the way Mark put it was you get to the main stage as a qualifier, you banked all that cash, their pressure's off, you're an underdog, it's a free hit, and they're going in and beating these guys because they've also matched up, which makes sense as well.
So, yeah, there's two sides to the coin, and I get both points.
But, yeah, certainly, the the idea it's funny because it is no idea that they're predicted, but I think they are predicted.
It's just that they're not it's just they're not predicted that well because everyone else is so dangerous.
I think that that makes a lot of sense.
Phil, let's go through the results from the last 16 stage on Woods then.
And, oh, well, remember Kyren Wilson, Pang Jung Su pretty well.
Kyren won it four three.
Really good match.
Break of 94 from Kyren and the deciders to win it.
San Craig, he beat Maxell four two.
It was Elliott Slessor four.
Ricky Walden one, and Anthony McGill four, Matthias Barronowski one.
Word for Barronowski, good run, of course.
Mark Williams beat Martin O'Donnell at four nil.
Loved the one two seven to wrap it up for Mark.
Bit of vintage Williams there.
David Gilbert, who haven't...
Amid a load of pessimism when I was there, Phil, had the odd moment of optimism.
I'm saying it was about five five one in a ratio in in favor of pessimism.
That's not bad.
That's not bad for Dave.
He beat, Kuwait Chung at four two.
It was Jak Jones four, Daniel Wells two, and, Scott Donaldson four, Jordan Brown two.
So home hopes ended there for Jordan.
Let's go back to the quarterfinals then and also, then go back to you, Phil Haigh.
It's Kyren Wilson six Anthony McGill one.
Bit between the teeth stuff from Kyren there.
Breaks at 77, 75, and one two two for him.
Sam Craigie bit Elliott, a lesser six two.
It was a funny one because the Friday afternoon quarters were one-sided, and then at night, anything but.
It was Mark Williams six, David Gilbert four.
Great one from Williams with four two down to win it, including three successes centuries.
And then a really exciting one, very close and dramatic, went late into the night.
Jak Jones, six.
Scott Donaldson, five.
So a lot lot to get yourself stuck into there there, Phil.
And, yeah, I mean, I suppose he ended up winning as we're gonna say it, but every round as it went on, time was just looking the part.
Really, really strong.
I mean, the two that stood out there, Matasz Bronowski and Chunker Wei, from way down deep in the rankings.
And, yeah, Chung beat Renee O'Sullivan and played well to do it.
I spoke to Kyren on the Zoom after after the final tonight, and that match came up.
And he said he didn't think Ronnie played badly.
Looked alright.
But Chung just just played really well, and that's why you're getting all these shocks.
There's just players that could be ranked 110 in the world and just play well enough to beat the goat at any at any point.
So, yeah, great runs from those guys.
That Gil...
That can be the Williams Gilbert game.
哇。
Wow.
Williams was Yeah.
All over the shop, and then suddenly just looked like, yeah, the best player on the planet by a mile.
That read in the last frame, I've watched that about 50 times since then.
Oh, god.
What a shot.
It's absolutely unbelievable.
I actually went...
I was sort of I was sort of what...
I think I was just looking at my phone or something when he put it, and it went in.
I was like, you can't...
Was that a fluke?
Like, you can't even go for that.
And then I just rewound it.
It was like, no.
Unbelievable.
And there's a great...
It'll probably become, like, mean material of the little smirk that Gilbert had in his chair just like, can you believe this?
It was very funny.
But, yeah, mean, and Mark said that himself afterwards.
He can go from sort of can't make 20 to just unstoppable, and he just said, I'm going for everything while I feel like this, and they're all going in.
So, yeah, it's just unbelievable to watch when he's like that.
And it was hard to see anyone stopping him, but like he said, he's sort of up and down a little bit.
But, yeah, Kyren was relatively serene through to that stage, looking very good as as we went on to see him continue to do.
But I was pleased for Sam.
We'll get to his defeat in the semis, but, obviously, we had him on here, last year, complete years ago.
I think it might have been last year.
And wasn't he good value?
When he came back from his injury, he generally thought his career might be over, it's a terrifying time really for any sportsman, eyeing at what else you might do when all you've ever done is this.
So he's a great player.
他是……
He's...
He could definitely do more than he has done in the game, and that was a great run for him there.
But the classic, I feel like a broken record on it talking about now.
It's the best run he's had for ages, if not ever, and he'll be pig sick with the way it ended.
He will, Phil.
And listen.
Our job is to wax lyrical about Snooker, and it doesn't need much waxing when it came to super Saturday because it was it was stunning, wasn't it?
I mean, any semifinal Saturday, we've seen plenty over the years when all 22 frames are played.
That's good.
Six fives in semis tend to be good, but they were kind of extra good, weren't they?
They were so dramatic.
It was just thrilling.
First one, Kyren Wilson, six Sam Craigie, five.
Now I've gotta be honest.
I strongly fancied Kyren to win that.
Probably about six two, six three.
That's one of those while I was traveling across London to do a shift, catching bits on the phone.
Sometimes I can watch bits on the tube and on the train and different things.
I sort of couldn't believe it in a way, and nothing against Sam was a great player.
I just thought Kyren was firing so much.
Sam inspired stuff going five three ahead.
Wilson, as the champion, has fought back to five five, and that decider.
I mean, I think you said the the most decidery of deciders, which is a good way of expressing it on social media.
你看,
Look.
We don't miss any pots on the armchair, do we?
It's very easy from there, but, you know, Sam had a wonderful chance.
They're never as easy at the bulk end.
I was thinking in the build up of this.
They're they're hard from us at all ends and all sides, Phil.
But for those guys, people like Sam Quakey, Kyren Wilson, they prefer the black end.
Everyone does because it's just never as easy.
But it wasn't that near It wasn't that near the cushion with the red.
I didn't think for a minute he missed it.
I thought he was gonna win.
You know?
I think most of us would have done.
It was unfortunate for him.
You know?
It was one of those where you had to feel so sorry, but what a golden chance he had.
Kyren got the victory.
And then Jak Jones was the most shell shocked man in the arena on Saturday night, Phil, because he didn't think he played that well.
He obviously did in patches.
It was Jak playing it down, but he didn't early on.
Williams played well.
He was four one up.
Should have been five one, missed an easy yellow.
And then Jones got back to four four, five four Williams, five five.
And then I still remember Alan McManus right now.
Williams played really well in in the decided to go 40 odd points up, put a color say, did the did the John Power.
Everyone was happy if you're Williams fans heading for victory seemingly.
Then Alan McManus said, I've seen it, but I don't believe it.
And then he said Yeah.
Don't even don't even show me a replay.
I still don't believe it.
And as the replay came on, was a good good the way he timed it.
Just an incredible dolly miss to middle for Mark.
He only needed about five or six pops to do it.
Jones came back.
He won it.
And someone said to me on social media about it shows that even the greats can have matches like that.
Of course, they can.
Even the greats can.
But, yeah, I mean, sum up that semifinal Saturday, Phil.
You you...
Your turn to wax lyrical, sir.
It was great stuff.
And even when it wasn't great stuff, it was great dramatic stuff.
I mean, I love that decider between Sam and Kyren.
They really went out for ages playing great safety.
There was no chance for anything for ages.
Then both got chances, and, yeah, and I thought Sam was gonna win then.
And even then he got back in though.
He had a he had a shot of the yellow, and I did wonder if that miss on the red was sort of scrambled his brain a bit because he took on a very tricky long yellow to then leave Kyren in for the match, and he could have played a safety.
Don't know.
But, yeah, tough tough loss because he looked so good at five three, wasn't it?
Kyren had to win the last three frames.
He was looking very strong, and Kyren had missed some unexpected shots.
But, you know, I was impressed with Kyren from there because, you know, it...
He was a he was a hot favour of that match.
I, like you, thought he was gonna win at the start, but he's he's not been winning recently in ranking events certainly.
He's not been going deep even, but there weren't any sort of wobbles to...
As he burst for the winning line from there.
So, yeah, I was I was impressed with him.
And, yeah, then that other one is just madness, really.
Like, Mark just...
I mean, he he explained it, didn't he?
He's just having half of games at a time, and against Gilbert was the second half.
Against Jack, it was the first half.
But drama to the end.
So lovely stuff.
Value for money.
I don't know how much a semifinal day's ticket was in Oh, yeah.
It was worth every penny.
More than the final was.
That's the way it goes, isn't it?
That's what you saw in the final.
Talked about it earlier.
Kyren Wilson, a very, very good win, a comfortable victory against Jak Jones by nine frames to two.
Congratulations to Kyren.
Let's talk more about Belfast and the tournament in general terms and the venue and the city in a couple of moments time, Phil.
We're doing okay for time, and we should say here, you are listening to Talking Snooker with Phil Haigh and Nick Metcalfe.
Hello, everybody.
It's Talking Snooker here.
It's good to have you with us.
And feeling I can swap notes now about Belfast.
He went last year.
I've just been this year.
And while I had a cracking time, that's the overall headline.
No no question about it.
I I do love the distinct nature of the Waterfront Hall.
No question about it.
I know you've talked about it and a lot on other people.
The way those balconies come down, it's it's a really interesting piece of design.
You know, having been in about a million of these venues in in my life, you know, for different reasons, you know, it's something really distinct, you always have really grabbed by it, and I took a photo that I know a lot of people have seen.
Got quite a lot of attention actually on, putting it on some of my various social media feeds.
Right at the top where you get the idea the balcony's both sides, and it...
It's really, you know, something I enjoyed.
I love the big foyer.
It's a...
You know, it's just that word I know I use, but it's got a gravitas.
When you're walking towards that, if you're coming from the city or more, you know, from the center as I often did past City Hall where I was staying right near the center near the near the Ratner Station, and I was going that way.
Or one day I walked by the waterfront over the bridge, Whichever way you go, it's got that feeling of a big event, which I love.
You know?
I really enjoy that.
I mean, who doesn't love that?
As for the city, yeah, I mean, I I really enjoyed it.
Particularly on Thursday, lovely, nice, sunny, or classic autumn day.
I enjoyed walking around the Cathedral 0.25 and, you know, walking down the...
By the waterfront.
Oh, also, Phil, didn't I have a lovely time?
The day I went to Banger.
I did.
I took I took I took the Rattler to Banger, and it was very, very pleasant, Both stations at the end of the line.
I love that as a railway nerd.
That was really nice.
Nice excursion, but I did enjoy it.
I really did.
And I've gotta say overall, it's not a point I wanna labor, but it's not a point I wanna ignore either.
If you're of my age or or similar, it will always be immensely affecting to be in Belfast.
I'm not saying you think about it every moment you're there by any means, but when you reflect on it, so much of my life, that city, was associated with such great sadness during the years of the troubles.
To see it now as a lovely city, fun city, vibrant, buzzing, it's really, say, something that affects me and really I find pretty moving actually.
So all good stuff.
I know you'll probably echo this.
We'll come to the, yeah, world championship twenty twenty nine talk perhaps in a moment, but, yeah, I know you found similar things when you went when the venue and the city join together in marriage if you like, that's what we're looking for isn't it?
Yeah definitely yeah.
The size of the city is a big thing for me.
It's It's a capital city, it's a substantial significant city, but it's not massive.
You can walk across it.
When I looked at the map where I was staying there, I felt like I was on the...
I'd accidentally booked it on the other side of the city and I was like, have I done there?
But it's a bit twenty five minute walk really.
So you can go wherever you want easily.
It's a great spot.
I feel like it's getting so much praise naturally when these things happen, then the naysayers appear and you've got to have someone's got to write a sort of contrary column about it in a in a broadsheet because that's what happens when things get too popular.
But I've never really had anyone say anything bad about the Waterfront Hall and this this tournament in Belfast.
It it just...
The wave of popularity continues, and that's what I found.
You know, I went because it had been bigged up so much, and it lived up expectations.
As you said, a fun city.
It could be any night of the week, though.
If you come out the snooker, there'll be somewhere to go that'll be atmospheric and vibrant and somewhere to have a few Guinnesses.
If, Dave Gilbert was actually...
He started vlogging, which feels like he's sort of twenty years behind the curve on that, but he was posting a lot on his Facebook, and it was very enjoyable.
And he ended up having a few Guinnesses a few nights, which was, fun to watch.
And that's another thing about the the the fans.
I'll see a lot of players out and about and get to say hello.
所以……
So...
不。
No.
It's all it's all positive.
Everything about the setting, the way the the room is set up itself, the queue zone's great.
It's it's all good.
And I don't know.
There's there seems to have been sort of various levels of is the world championship is going there.
I I...
I'm not sure if that's the case, but, there's been plenty of talk up of why how it would be suitable venue for it, and I completely agree with that.
And in a way, I think Mark said...
Did Mark say this to you about it being in Sheffield?
Or did he say it on TV?
He he said it to me as well, actually.
But some of the things I've just said about Belfast about...
And some of the things that have been said about the other venues in Sheffield is why Belfast's so good.
You know, the Sheffield Arena gets mentioned.
You know, that's not in town or a good bit of town.
It's missing a lot of the good things that Belfast would have if you get that tram out to that bit of town.
It's by like the EIS as people would would have been to the World Championship qualifiers there.
It ain't the best.
And or the Octagon has got mentioned quite a lot, you know, that's, you know, you talk about the impressive layout and architecture of the of the balconies at the Waterfront Hall.
The Octagon is just sort of like a a room in this due to the university.
Like, it's a big room.
You could fit enough people in it, but it's just it's just a room.
所以……
So...
我……
I mean, I'm...
I I would always defend Sheffield.
The Sea Hall is the one.
If we could get in...
I don't know if it could be set up properly, but that is a beautiful building that can fit a couple of thousand people in.
它……
It...
It's it's got, like, a stage at the end.
I don't know if you could configure it for snooker, but if you could, that would be the one in Sheffield.
But some of these other ones are are not what somewhere like Belfast could have.
Well explained.
I do think there's merit in what Mark Williams says, and senior Henry said it as well, because my suggestion was Manchester.
And I understand there's issues.
Maybe they can't get that venue.
Mean, that's only one venue.
There are lots of places that could have it in Manchester.
That that to me was the one that leapt out straight away as a great city.
We've had Snooker there now in in recent years at a big tournament.
The connectivity is so easy to get to.
You know, for me, that was, you know, where where I was gonna go.
But look, you're right.
There were lots of good candidates.
There is merit, and Williams Henry says it as well.
You know, keep it in Sheffield.
It's been there since, you know, the crucible went there and, you know, started the tournament in '77.
It's going there for all the years in the future.
Why break the Sheffield run if you like?
I'm not...
Fair enough.
I I haven't actually put that audio out yet, which I may do at some stage, but I was a little bit harsh on Sheffield and Reader on the air.
I said, well, it's not brilliant.
And Mark said, they can turn it brilliant.
I know that they can turn it brilliant, really.
那……
That that...
That's where I went to madness, wasn't it, when you picked me up.
它它……
It it...
It's function...
It's functional, but...
And listen.
I think the...
I'm not too hung up on 2029, actually, if I'm brutally honest.
I mean, I know I've asked a lot of questions this week about it and what have you.
To me, you know, yes yes, we want it to be good, but, you know, the point is it's it's in between the two different crucibles, if you like.
You know, it's not something I particularly, you know, think anyone should go overboard about.
I I do, yeah, think this...
When I was at Sheffield Arena, I thought, oh, this this is gonna be like where where...
If anyone went to Wembley Arena when the masters was there, it never worked.
It was just a massive arena, a bit of it for snooker.
The acoustics were all wrong.
The ambiance was all wrong.
It was just not good.
I think Sheffield Arena would be like that.
We mentioned that because it's a big old place you can host it.
As you say, it's not even good around it.
There's a couple of sort hotels, isn't there?
Couple of hotel bars.
它……
It...
Saying soulless is a bit rude and mean, but it's a bit like that, isn't it?
Certainly compared to the glories...
I see your face, you agree.
Certainly by the...
Compared to the the glories of the center of the city in Sheffield, which we know so well, of course.
But look, Jordan Brown said to me it would be, quote, mad to overlook, you know, Belfast.
He says it was a no brainer for him.
I know there was great representation.
I know there are people from politics in Northern Ireland government that that were there during during this week.
And listen, it would be a a source of great pride for the city, I'm sure.
You know, when everyone talks about it, their eyes light up, just the prospect of it.
As far as I know, there's no imminent announcement.
I wouldn't rule it out.
You know?
It it may come before the end of the year.
My guess is that it would come around about the same time we heard about the crucible deal this year, I.
E, sometime just before the tournament.
And wouldn't that suit us, Phil, by the way?
Because it it means it wouldn't spend the whole of the twenties.
Not that we'd spend the whole of it, you know what I mean.
We don't wanna spend that long speculating about 29 when we're enjoying the the fifty years of the crucible,
That's what I'm expecting really, sometime before the next world championship, but closer to the next world championship than now.
And, yeah, and and Dave Hedman makes this point well, when on this subject.
I mean, it's that we could talk about how great venues are, but it all comes out of finances as well.
How much it costs to take these places up for three weeks.
But, of course, like you said, you know, local government in Belfast going there, somewhere like not necessarily just Belfast, but anywhere, it's a huge boon to have a tournament that big, that long in the city.
So I'm sure there's deals to be done, but we'll see.
If I'm right in saying the...
Didn't the deal to keep it there, the qualifiers were gonna stay where they are, or they...
Did...
Was that not confirmed?
You throw me a bit of a potato there.
I like hot...
I love I love hot potatoes.
No problem for me.
Bit of cheese, bit of beans, lovely Phil.
Don't mind those at all don't mind those at all, colonel.
I think the qualifiers might well be selling Sheffield, actually.
我不会
I wouldn't
just had...
So I was wondered if that if that if that makes it less likely to be a flight away if you've...
The qualifiers finish on the Wednesday to start on the Saturday, but maybe not.
Maybe that might not have anything to do with it.
But, yeah, look, anyone who will have been to watch The Stooker there, as I said, there's...
I've not heard an ace, and you can always find an ace somewhere.
I've not found one about the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, so it would be great if it can be done.
I looked up because I wanted to see the job title.
I did meet the chief executive of the Waterfront Hall and, you know, rightly proud of that venue.
And you go through people on the wall, it's not like, you know, they're not quite big names in music.
I mean, you know, the TV sector was saying to me, I've had Bob Dylan here for two nights recently.
That's the thing.
它……
It, you know, it...
You talk about the expense.
It won't be cheap to hire the Waterfront Hall.
It is slap down there.
I actually...
By the way, I...
This is a bit of a travel point.
I love places like that.
I think it's quite a sort of northern thing, and I mean in Europe.
A lot of Scandinavia.
Scotland has it, and the islands have it.
I've been to one in Shetland.
There's a brilliant one in Reykjavik.
I have a bit of a fantasy them having a snook event in it.
I've I've got what it's what it's called in Reykjavik.
Might just be the Opera house.
I love buildings like that where they make the the best use of what isn't always a great weather place frankly, because the sun comes in the windows.
It's a...
And a couple of days were like that, the waterfront hall.
The sun was streaming, and I love that big windows looking out to water.
That suits me perfectly.
I love places like that, and this fits in that category.
There's a beautiful one in Oslo as well, the opera house there, by the way.
I I love the places like that.
This is like that.
It just has that nice feel about it.
So, yeah, it's a...
Like you you hear these places named, you think, yeah, fancy that.
Lot lot of people were saying to York to me, my old alma mater during the week, why not York?
I thought, yeah, why not York?
It's a great place.
I love it.
There'd be no complaints whatsoever for me there.
So I don't get hung up too much on '29.
I think whatever it is, you know, you know, I'm sure it'll be a good championship.
And we...
In between the two crucible areas, we'll see we'll see what happens.
A non Phil, but look, I enjoyed my time there.
I think it's a a top tournament, and I know you, you know, you you have sort of similar feelings as well.
We we say congratulations to everyone that put it on, don't we?
You know, people were saying to me when I was there, this is the biggest home nations now.
I suppose a little bit of me balked, but I thought, the history of the Welsh is so so big.
But do you know what?
I don't mind if people say that now.
There there is a sign of merit in it.
The Welsh has moved around a lot.
That's its problem really.
And then they've got the waterfront now.
It might only have taken a decade, but maybe Northern Ireland is the biggest home nation now.
Oh, I know what I meant to say earlier.
Forgot me.
I'll come back.
It's come back to me.
I know what you mean about that.
It's a funny thing.
When everyone's praising something so much, it almost has to be...
I'll tell you an example of that London Olympics.
Now two of my very good friends in life that they're such...
They're quite contrary anyway, but they were like, there's too much praise over this.
We need to be like, no.
It's too much.
Everyone's saying how incredible London is.
It's a bit unbearable.
Some people are designed a bit like that, but I tell you what, I don't think there needs to be naysayers on this, but what I do think is we need to talk the Scottish up more.
We don't talk that event enough...
Up enough.
总是……
It's always...
Not always, but there's often negatives, oh, know, just before Christmas and it's not the right time.
You never sort of hear anything really positive or rarely about that event.
It is in Edinburgh.
It is a great city.
It's Edinburgh Christmas.
So maybe...
I'm not gonna tell you what to do, Phil.
I'll do it from my point of view.
I wanna talk the Scottish up a bit more this time because I think when it comes to that event, it's always a bit too downbeat.
It's it's the time of year, isn't it?
But then at the same time, that's a great time of year.
I'm a Christmas fan.
And, you know, players pull out that event sometimes, and I see people on social media saying, oh, well, know, it's the...
It's a couple of weeks before Christmas.
As if you can't go and play a couple of games of Snooker a couple of weeks before Christmas.
That's exactly what I do, and I'm not even getting paid to do it.
So, yeah, I've not heard...
Always heard amazing things about the venue up there to be fair, which might have something to do with it, but Edinburgh, you know, what a city.
So that should certainly get the praise.
But I'll have to go up there.
I've not actually been while that tournison, so, maybe that's our our mission for years to come to come and have a look.
但是……
But...
不。
No.
It's all it's all positives for Belfast for sure.
Well, there's a line for you.
Phil Haigh, a Christmas fan.
我们……
We we...
This hasn't been an awaited episode, has it, at all?
Phil, we're going to move on, aren't we, from the Northern Ireland Open?
Well done to Kyren Wilson.
Well done to everyone that put on that smashing tournament.
And we got...
We we fitted this into sort of three thirds potentially here.
Couple of thirds done.
We'll try and take it up to an hour, won't we?
And we should say you are listening here to Talking Snooker with Phil Haigh and Nick Metcalfe.
Hello, everybody.
It's Talking Snooker here, and the next event is the international championship.
We're looking forward to it.
If you tune in Sunday and they're talking about it being day two already, don't forget it starts on Saturday.
It's a Saturday to Saturday tournament.
Okay?
Beginning this Saturday, Halloween, October 31, and ending the following Saturday, November 7, which helps for the start of the champion of champions on Monday, November 9.
So looking forward to it, Phil.
I'll have a look at some of the matches.
One leaps out, of course.
We mentioned it before we came on the air.
Mark Selby gets Jimmy Jimmy White.
Mark Selby's a baby in this match.
That's in the early hours of Saturday morning, mid of the night, actually.
Almost late Friday night UK time, but if you're in the Far East, you're in Australia, it's a good time for you on on Saturday.
I looked at their first match.
It was at the two thousand and five Irish Masters, Phil, at the City West Hotel, Jimmy winning five one.
That's going back a few years.
Stuart Big and Mark Ho Fu, that word I started to use maybe too much, redoubtable, two redoubtable customers there in the early hours of next Sunday morning.
And this is an absolute potential cracker, especially if they play well, and I saw someone that Tepcaya and Luca play well this coming week.
They got each other.
Luca Boussell, Tepcaya are new.
So roll up, roll up for that.
That's next Sunday morning.
Another one I like the look of Gary Wilson next Sunday lunchtime, and Stan Stan Moody against Sam Craigie.
Craigie, of course, having just such a good run-in Belfast.
That's next Sunday lunchtime.
Sorry for not taking all the good ones.
Over to you.
You have a little bit.
Moody.
It's crazy.
Caught my eye as well, and obviously, Priscilla against Teptjeir.
I mean, Priscilla's O'Donnell as well, he's got a stinking record against the Ministry of Defence.
He hates it.
So Teptjeir will be playing more his kind of game.
So, that's one to look forward to.
And and Kyren coming off his win in Belfast against one of the better players this season from down the ranking, Liam Haighfield.
He's been very good in the qualifiers and, you know, that run to the semis of the British.
So that's a test for Kyren early on there, and then there's a load of sort of wild card rounds, isn't there?
But another one, first up actually, Saturday morning, if you're ready at half past one in the morning on Saturday, Liam Davies against Joey Long, also very, very nice.
So you could...
If you stayed up or you've got up incredibly early, you can double stream...
Double screen Jimmy White Selby and Joey Long, Liam Davies.
So, yeah, good luck to you if you're there at that time.
Well, I often sell social media that...
Because I often put things up late, you know, pods and what have you, and I say, you know, if you're a shift worker or a night out or you're going around the bend, this is perfect for you.
人们……
People...
That's a bit that's a bit rude, mate.
Then I say, don't worry.
I fit into all three categories, so I am talking about myself.
That that that makes it a little bit less rude.
Phil, we look forward to the tournament very much underway on on Saturday, and we should also say some more news lines from the world of snooker.
Neil Robertson's in the field for the champion of champions due to his world ranking of number three.
What a lineup for that tournament.
That's fabulous.
Underway on Monday, November 9.
We got some Q tour news for you.
The latest event, Jason Ferguson was talking about this actually in...
To me in Oberhausen in Germany.
He was he was...
He's a snooker man through and through, isn't he, Jason?
I mean, he he was looking through excited.
He's showing me the results from the...
From Oberhaus, and I like that, as he should.
And, this is a copy from the WPBSA website then.
Riley Powell defeated Mark Lloyd four one to win the third WPBSA q tour event of the season in Alburhussen in Germany.
The 18 year old Welshman won through a field of 153 players from 33 countries, isn't that smashing, in the biggest, ever q two event stage in Mainland Europe.
And, he became Powell, the third different champion of the campaign following Sanderson Lam and Aaron Bussettil.
But you get frustrated some more than I do, I know, about, yes, it's a global sport, but I wish it was a bit more of a global sport.
With 33 countries, that's not to be sneezed at.
确实。
Definitely.
It looks looks superb there, and a great effort.
Riley Powell has been knocking around for a while.
He he was at a shootout a little while ago, and he looked incredibly young.
He still is incredibly young.
He's 18.
I know he's he's played in that South Wales area with all those great players coming through.
He's just a little bit behind those other guys who are on tour now winning matches, but he'll he'll be wanting to join them very soon.
And if you can win a tournament like that with that amount of players, most more experienced than him, then it's a very positive sign.
I've seen him playing in the 900 a fair bit as well.
You know, he's very busy on the amateur circuit.
So, yeah, huge congratulations to him, and I don't know if if that gets him in...
I think that might get him in the UK Championship Qualifies.
So, yeah, great chance for him there.
You know, it's a great learning ground down there, isn't it?
With Liam Davies and and Mark Williams, obviously, and Lee Walker and Jackson Page.
You know, he'll he'll be brought up right.
That's the vibe.
You absolutely like you will.
Well, Phil, we saw a big event, didn't we, the World Women's Snooker Tour?
I know we we teed it up a couple of episodes ago.
Let's let's give you the outcome.
The Australian Women's Open was won for the third time by On That was at the the very good Mounties Club in Sydney that you hear a lot about if you know your snooker.
On Yee beat Mink Nutra at four three in the final.
I looked at the scoring because it was cracking.
I looked a tiny bit of the action as well, actually.
On Yee went two nil up.
Minkling stormed with three frames in a row for a three two lead.
Onye made a break of 81 to level and make it to three three, and then she won the decider as well with the aid of a break of 57.
So congratulations to On Yee winning that big event in Australia.

Phil, I think we might be around to any other business time.
I've been very busy on Radio Snooker with the interviews on there.
Let me tell you the lines.
I mentioned Mark Williams a bit earlier talking about the tiered system.
He's also very down on qualifiers.
I don't know if maybe you you want a word on that.
I actually spoke to Jason Ferguson about that as well.
You know, it is interesting because when you're in Belfast, it's a big event.
It's got gravitas, good crowds, big occasion, and everyone's taught Jason's...
It's Jason's job to talk up snooker, of course.
It's a thriving sport.
We're a booming sport.
It's a little bit like, well, if it's so booming, then why are we having all these qualifiers?
That's the spirit of what Mark Williams is saying as well.
With no crowds there, you know, in...
A lot of the time in Leicester, and a lot of the players are getting frustrated by it.
You know, Mark thinks all the players should play at the the the main the main venue.
这……
It's...
