You do not need to sacrifice happiness to perform well.
And you do not need to sacrifice performance to be happy as a runner.
Performance, discipline, and improvement matter, but running becomes unhealthy when self worth depends on outcomes.
欢迎回到That's Runnable。
Welcome back to thatsrunnable.
I'm your host, Tommy.
If you're new here, appreciate you for coming.
If you're an avid and longtime listener, thanks for returning.
Maybe you've just started to run and you've chosen this podcast to accompany that run, and I appreciate that decision.
Thank you for being here.
This podcast is about running the runnable.
It's about taking our challenges and approaching it optimistically.
It's about believing that we can and metaphorically running runnable sections wherever possible.
This week has been an incredible one.
It's been a bit hectic, but it's been a crazy week.
I mean, I'm talking to you from the May 20, so this should be released only twenty four hours after.
And three days ago, we released An Invitation To Run Differently.
It's our first documentary.
It's a full thirty minute film.
And although it's just on YouTube and it's free, it deserves to have your full attention, I believe.
Max Morrison, director, producer, editor has done an unreal job of putting together footage mostly filmed by the amazing director of photography, Chris.
Chris Thompson
Chris Thompson has some skills with a camera.
Let me tell you that.
And people have noticed.
It's a beautiful film, and I am just so proud of the guys that have helped to put this together.
The team that we have put together to make this film deserves all of the recognition that they can get, And I'm just really proud of it.
I'm really happy with the result, and I have been overwhelmed with messages coming my way on Instagram, long emails even being sent on how not only the film itself has resonated, but stories of how running has changed people's lives for the better.
If you you haven't watched the documentary already, I wanna encourage you to go do so.
It's thirty minutes long, so it's not a huge commitment.
You can watch it on a treadmill.
I'm sure Max would forgive you if you're watching it on your iPhone on a treadmill, But you can watch it in the evening maybe on a full screen as well.
The film is about it's an attempt to help you reapproach your running.
It's an attempt to remind you of the real reasons why we do this stuff.
It's to realign you and reframe what has become this boom in running.
And there's a lot of distractions in running.
There's a lot of distractions in the space, and it can be difficult to stay in touch with the real reasons why you do this stuff, the powerful reasons.
And this podcast, if you've been listening to it for a long time, stands on that ethos.
《That's Runnable》
The mission of That's Runnable is sort of summarized in this film, and so I don't wanna try and summarize the film.
I want the film to speak for itself.
Go and watch it, and I hope you enjoy But today, I want to talk to you about something that a lot of the messages that I've received have reminded me of and something I'm often conscious of when I talk about these themes of power and transformation and presence in running and nature.
Of course, my ambition is to remind you of the real reasons why we run and to help to guide you to have a healthy relationship with running.
I care about you having this stuff in your life for a long time.
I care about you enjoying the process.
And I want you to love running.
It's as simple as that.
And I have had an experience in my life where running has completely transformed it.
And I want that for you.
I know that my experience is not unique.
A lot of the feedback on the film, a lot of the responses on the film have been something along the lines of this resonated because it's not an uncommon story.
My story is not an uncommon story, and the story told in the documentary is something that I think will resonate and has resonated with many people.
And that is a pretty common story of a highly stressed individual finding running as an anchor and a tool for managing that stress.
But there's been this theme in the responses I've gotten from the documentary that have that has made me want to remind you of the fact that you don't have to sacrifice your performance to be happy.
I've had some messages come my way that have been something along the lines of it's reminded me to ignore all of my metrics and it's reminded me to forget the data and just go run, and that's beautiful.
To be fair, I think you can approach running in that way, and I think it's amazing way to approach running.
You don't have to be so performance obsessed.
And there are many people for whom as soon as you pay attention to performance and metrics, you forget everything else.
You forget to focus on how you feel.
You forget the other benefits that running has for you.
But performance is not in and of itself a bad thing.
And I wanna quickly remind you in this episode that you can have both.
Before we get started, I wanna mention INOV8, the sponsor of this episode.
INOV8 makes all sorts of gear.
I'm wearing one of their t shirts now.
I'm wearing their shorts, actually, in fact.
I love everything they have in the pro series.
They're releasing some amazing new stuff, and I often talk about their shoes.
But I wanna take a moment to talk about their race packs.
The race packs are amazing.
They are simple.
They're not overcomplicated, and the 10 liter has become my real companion.
If I'm being honest, I feel like I probably could do with having, a four liter just for daily runs, but it's a pretty versatile size, the 10 liter.
And if I'm not packing it completely full of stuff, it still feels very comfortable.
And I'll be after this recording, I'll be heading out to the trails and taking my 10 liter race pack with me.
I love that it loads from the top.
I love that it has a massive pocket on the left, and I have learned to love the locking system of the soft flasks as well, to be fair.

Most people started running for how it made them feel.
Most people who started running at least in later years started running because it was a stress management tool.
It was helpful for their mental health.
It made them feel better.
A lot of people talk about the benefits of going for a run because it makes you feel better.
It's not the the data, the data obsession.
It's not the performance necessarily that always brings people into running.
Often, people start running because of the benefits that it has on their mental health and their overall well-being.
Often, people who become obsessed with running and and really get the bug, they have this experience of how it makes them feel.
They have this improved sense of self worth.
Sometimes maybe you experience this runner's high, and that runner's high was just an amazing experience.
And you get back and you just feel so good.
You wanna go do it again.
Most people, they start running with real and genuine and and meaningful reasons.
They connected with nature.
They enjoyed how they felt when they went out on that run.
They enjoyed what they felt like when they got back.
They haven't had a they had an improved sense of worth, and and they had an improved view of themselves.
Their perspective on life at the end of their run was much better than it was when they were sat inside before their run.
Most people started running for how it made them feel.
Most people carried on running because of how it made them feel, not the metrics.
But modern running culture, all of the influences that we have online, the massive growth in the industry has caused huge commercialization of such a simple activity.
There's loads of cool stuff out there.
There's loads of exciting new gear.
There's loads of exciting technology.
Feels like everyone who starts running now immediately buys a a running watch.
Or it's one of the first questions that people ask when they get into running.
Ask, oh, I think I probably need a running watch.
That never used to be the case.
It was such a new that's such a new thing.
Then there's all this obsession over getting the right shoes, which can be healthy.
It can be a healthy obsession getting the right shoes.
But what's the perfect shoes for this?
And how can I optimize x, y, and zed?
Then there's tracking everything.
Once you have your watch, you're tracking it in all sorts of apps.
You're comparing the data.
People are posting online all the time about the data.
You'll see Stravasat slapped over a video.
Those videos do really well on social media.
When you put some impressive stats over a video of someone running, it's gonna do well.
And so this instigates a lot of comparison.
And all of this stuff, all of this noise in the running space, in this modern running world that we live in during this boom of interest in running can pull us away from the actual experience of running.
We are endlessly distracted.
We're distracted by our own thoughts.
We're distracted by comparison.
We are distracted by the data.
And the data itself can cause us to be too obsessed with the wrong things.
Maybe you're training for a race and you're trying to get a certain time in that race.
And so every time you go out, that training session is a contribution to your efforts to get a certain time in that race?
How does this contribute to my training?
How does it contribute to getting me closer to my goal?
Am I making the most of my training?
Is this session optimized?
Is this session productive?
Garmin, they'll be calling you productive, unproductive, overreaching.
They'll be giving you what they think of your training, and you didn't even ask.
You may go out on a run that feels amazing, and then the data is thrown at you, and all of a sudden, your perspective on your run is different.
It's been ruined.
So we're constantly in this battle.
Many people start running for good reasons.
They do it because of how it makes them feel and their connection to nature and the presence and the flow state and their self worth and just good, true reasons.
And then the modern running culture pulls us away from the actual experience.
And often, we can feel too obsessed with data, and we can think about the metrics all the time.
And when we see all the metrics on our watch and maybe the watch has given us feedback and telling us we're unproductive, and that takes us away from the benefits that we were feeling from running.
And so we we're in this constant battle.
Of course, then it starts to sound like, as a coach, as someone who's made a documentary on this very topic, encouraging people to come back to the real reasons why we run, it starts to sound like it's anti performance.
It starts to sound like I don't care about performance.
But I do.
I really, really do.
I personally care a lot about my performances.
I put in a lot of time and effort and dedication to my running.
I don't just run because it makes me feel nice.
There's a whole host of benefits outside of the presence in the run, outside of the connection with nature, outside of how it makes me feel after the run, the stress management.
There's a whole host of benefits that are there because I care about my performance.
The discipline of making sure I run every day, the discipline of showing up and being consistent, That only exists because I have big goals.
I am only showing up every day reliably.
I'm only executing 95 plus percent of my training because I care about how I'm gonna perform on these races I've signed up for.
I am, at the end of the day, an ultra runner.
I care about my performances.
Currently, I am training for a race out in Switzerland, Eiger Trail, UTMB.
It's a it's a 101 kilometer race in the Swiss Alps.
Lots of elevation gain.
And after that, I'll be doing another race, Nice Cote D'Azur.
100 miles, 9,000 meters of elevation gain.
Lots and lots of training required for these things.
These are intimidating races for me.
I would not be showing up as consistently.
I would not be having the same discipline with my training, going to the gym, making sure I'm doing the right things, being honest with my training.
If I didn't have these performance goals, there's huge benefit in being disciplined.
Is huge benefit in pushing yourself.
In going for goals that are ambitious, that are intimidating.
There's benefit in proving that you are more capable than you once thought you were.
And that is all thanks to my performance goals.
So there's huge benefits in that.
This message of being present and grateful and enjoying your running and taking in the experience itself, that message is not anti performance.
Presence, gratitude, and enjoyment often improve long term performance.
I am someone who cares a lot about your long term health, your longevity and durability in the sport.
That's everything I coach.
So all of the products that I offer under that's runnable, my one to one coaching and my coaching hub.
The coaching philosophy in the coaching hub is all about longevity.
It's all about making sure you can do this stuff for a long time.
There's both physical and mental aspects to that.
The physical aspects are doing the right strength training, the mobility, the sustainable training in the programming.
It is a sustainable practice in the training.
But the mental side of it is all about enjoyment for the sport, maintaining a grounded perspective.
RUNNABLE JOURNAL
RUNNABLE JOURNAL is the new product.
This is a journaling app that helps you actively engage with the real reasons why you run.
Every day, there are prompts in the app that will help you to journal properly, reflect properly on your running and on your life.
It speaks back to you.
It helps you.
It engages with you to realign you with the real reasons why you do this stuff, to make sure that you are maintaining a positive perspective.
As you train, as you perform, as you look to chase goals that are intimidating, it's important to be grounded in the process, not just because that not just because you can gain so much from that, but because it will benefit your performance.
It will keep you doing this stuff for a long time.
And as we all know, one of the most important things is to maintain a consistent practice over a long period of time.
To do that, we must be grounded.
We must maintain a good perspective.
And so we have to marry these two things.
We have to chase goals because discipline and showing up and doing things when we don't want to do them, doing things when we don't feel like we want to do them, ignoring how we feel, and actually just staying disciplined is an important practice.
Doing the thing regardless of how you feel, overriding your negative mental state and taking action, all positive things, all performance led, all driven by goals.
But having that having all of that desire, having that performance led approach where we're trying to optimize and think about the data and improve as an athlete, massive benefits to that as an as an individual, massive benefits you can gain from that.
All of that is necessary, but it must be coupled with everything that's spoken about in the documentary and everything I talk about here on the podcast as it relates to being grounded in the enjoyment of the sport and remembering that there are real powerful deep reasons, transformative reasons, reasons that change lives why we do this.
You can train seriously while still approaching training for what it is.
You can train seriously while still just approaching your running for the experience itself.
You can be mid interval.
You can be mid hard effort, and you can finish that effort and feel grateful.
You can couple this experience of training hard, chasing goals, improving with a grounded reflective approach.
This is something I struggle with.
I wanna admit to you that a lot of what I talk about on this podcast, I talk about with passion because it's a personal thing too.
I want to resonate with you by telling you that I am no different in this sense.
There is no difference in me.
I get obsessed with data.
I become too performance obsessed.
I compare myself to others all the time.
I lose sight of the real reasons why I run all the time.
But I try as much as I possibly can to realign myself with a practice of gratitude, with a practice of reflection, with the real reasons to run, the powerful reasons, the transformative reasons, the stuff that saved me from my own hand.
The documentary itself, even though it's just my voice in the documentary, was a reminder to me.
I watched the documentary.
Of course, I did.
And it's a reminder to me of why I do this stuff.
I use my own products.
I use the RUNNABLE JOURNAL.
And every day that I remember, I reflect in that journal on my run, on how I'm doing, on my experience of my run, and how I'm feeling.
I I reflect on things that are on my mind and how I can change the negative thought patterns in my head.
And the app reflects back to me and helps me with these reflections, with this gratitude practice.
RUNNABLE JOURNAL
RUNNABLE JOURNAL is available in the show notes.
If you go to the show notes, you can check that out.
If you wanna support, it's about a tenner a month.
And you can have that journaling practice.
So to finish, I just want to say, firstly, that I am so, so grateful.
Genuinely, I am so grateful that I get to do this.
It is a privilege to me that I get to do this, but I also see it as a responsibility.
There is a lot of noise in the running world.
There's a lot of distractions.
And I can tell you that I am not immune to these distractions by any means.
Actually, I think I become more victim to these distractions because I'm so involved.
It's everything I think about and do all day long.
When you run your own business, when you're panicking about making sure that it's growing and, you know, you have big goals, all you think about is this stuff.
And that affects my own training.
And so I need these reminders too, and it's fine to admit that.
But I fundamentally believe, and I would be a hypocrite if I didn't.
I fundamentally believe that you can and should balance performance and reflection.
I believe that you can and should perform well and be an exceptional runner and be proud of your performances and go for goals that are intimidating, that you once thought you couldn't achieve, but also be grounded, enjoy the process, love running, remain in love with running.
Appreciate the experience of it itself.
Recognize the powerful impact it has in your life.
You can do those two things.
They are not mutually exclusive.
Performance and enjoyment are not mutually exclusive.
You can enjoy your running.
You can love the process.
You can appreciate the hardship of the process.
You can reflect on your running.
You can be grateful for the fact that you get to move, but you can also be extremely driven, extremely disciplined.
And there is benefit in that.
There is similar benefit for you as an individual if you are training hard, performing, and going for goals that are intimidating.

Go and give Max Morrison some love as well, director, producer, editor.
He can be found tagged in some of the posts on my social media.

If you wanna follow the YouTube, we have plans for more documentaries, shorter documentaries on other people.
It's not all gonna be about me.
I promise.
Amazing inspirational stories from other ultra runners who have also done amazing things performance wise in their running, but have also transformed their own lives through this amazing powerful practice of running and the outdoors and appreciating that power itself.
A lot can happen when you take this practice seriously, but it is a dangerous thing to be too obsessed with the wrong things.
So I want you to reflect on your running.
I want you to recognize how privileged and fortunate we are to be able to go out there and run.
And I'm reminded every day with messages that people send me, stories of people who have recovered from illness and can run again, people who can no longer run.
I'm reminded every day of how privileged I am and how privileged anyone who can run is because this tool is powerful.
I have a new intake on the June 1 for my coaching hub.
If you're interested in having a full running and strength program laid out before you on an app with loads of resources, there's over 60 videos in the library, in the resources tab, in the hub.
So if you remember the coaching hub and you're doing a treadmill session, you can throw up a video to pass the time.
Tons of videos up there.
So you can learn about how to train sustainably, how to approach this stuff in a way that lasts a lifetime.
You can come in.
You can stay for a couple months and then leave.
No harm done.
You don't need to stay forever.
It's £80 a month.
Currently, eight slots available.
So claim your spot now.
I also am opening up and have opened up new one to one slots, and there are very few of those.
So I'm just taking calls at the moment from people who are serious about one to one personalized coaching.
You can check out the RUNNABLE JOURNAL if you wanna support if the coaching services are not in budget and you wanna support with the RUNNABLE JOURNAL.
That can be a tool for you to realign and reapproach over the proper reflective practice within an app that will help you reflect on this stuff properly.
Appreciate you being here.
Thanks for listening.
Run the RUNNABLE.
Keep showing up for yourself, and I'll see you next time.
