Given how much we're talking about AI right now, it's no surprise that AI related words featured prominently in this year's word of the year vote.

I'm back from New Orleans where I was attending the American Dialect Society annual meeting.

And as we do every year, we voted on the word of the year.

I made a point of not peeking at the list because I wanted to hear it straight from you.

So let's jump in.

What was the word of the year?

2025年的年度词汇是SLOP。

The word of the year for 2025 is SLOP.

SLOP。

SLOP.

我有一些猜测，但请你解释一下。

Okay, I have some theories, but please explain.

就像AI SLOP，这其实也是2024年年度词汇的候选词，只不过是在2025年提出的，因为这种垃圾内容无处不在。

As in AI SLOP, which actually was a nominee for the word of the year for 2024, back in 2025 because the slop is everywhere.

它有时还会组合成其他形式，比如sloppification，而AI正导致大量这样的词汇产生。

It also sometimes combines so you get things like sloppification, and there's a lot of sloppification happening with AI.

它也被泛化用来描述那些大量生产但价值很低的内容。

It's also generalized to describe anything generated in mass quantities that is of little value.

丽贝卡，这里还有一个我覺得很棒的候选词，就是‘算法’。

Rebecca, there was another nominee here that I thought was great, which was the algorithm.

The algorithm, sort of

那个神秘的、掌控一切的东西。

this mysterious thing that controls it all.

Right?

Exactly.

It's this essentialized view of one algorithm instead of all the online algorithms as a unitary entity.

Now, SLOP also won digital word of the year.

In that category, it had some competition from the word clanker.

Clanker。

Clanker.

好的，我猜这跟机器人有关？

Okay, something to do with robots, I'm guessing?

是的。

It is.

这是一个用于形容人工智能代理和机器人的贬义词。

It is a pejorative term for AI agents and robots.

这么称呼AI机器人，未免太不敏感了吧。

Very insensitive, you know, to be AI robots.

接下来是‘最有可能成功’类别，获胜词是‘Chopped’。

Then we have the category most likely to succeed and the winner here is Chopped.

我见过这个词在流传。

I've seen this one floating around.

我大概知道它的意思。

I kind of have an idea of what it means.

但请解释一下。

But please explain.

这是现在非常流行的俚语。

This is very popular slang right now.

意思是丑陋或不讨人喜欢。

And it means ugly or undesirable.

在投票时，我了解到一个很棒的词，叫choppleganger。

And Rebecca, at the vote, I learned this amazing word, which is choppleganger.

Okay, again, I have a guess, but please tell us.

Choppleganger是指另一个人的更丑版本。

A choppleganger is an uglier version of another person.

Oh,

mean, but also amazing at the same time.

And the runner-up in this category, also an AI word, which is vibe coding, the use of an AI agent to code or assist in coding.

我觉得这也是一个不错的选择。

I think that was another nice choice.

Rebecca，我们还有几个其他类别，年度政治词汇。

Rebecca, we have a couple more categories, political word of the year.

这里的胜出词是一个短语：icy conditions。

The winner here is a phrase icy conditions.

从这个类别和当前新闻来看，我想我们大概能猜到它的意思。

Judging by the category and the current news, I think we might be able to guess what that might mean.

对。

Right.

这不是指天气，而是一个暗语，提醒人们社区里发现了冰块。

Not about the weather, a coded phrase alerting people that ice has been spotted in a neighborhood.

And other contenders in this category were doge as a verb, as in getting doged, and a Kavanaugh stop referring to justice Kavanaugh's opinion in a case about immigration status checks and the idea that a person can be detained based on social identifiers.

The one you've been waiting for, the informal word of the year, which is

Somebody asked me if I thought this was gonna be the word of the year and win it all.

我当时说，希望别选中。

And I was like, I hope not.

Bingo.

这句话来自Skrilla的歌曲《Doot Doot六七》。

This is coming from a song by Skrilla, Doot Doot six seven.

这是一个感叹词。

It's an interjection.

它几乎没有语义内容，但能区分年轻人中谁是圈内人，谁是圈外人。

It has very little semantic content, but it does distinguish who's in the group and who's out for young people.

我最喜欢的是，他们对‘六七’的语调模式，以及常常伴随的手势动作。

And what I love about this is that their intonational patterns to six, seven, and often gestural components.

My hands are doing it right now with six, seven.

最后，今年最具创意的词语。

And finally, the most creative word of the year.

我们这里又有一个短语，那就是‘重新加热的纳乔斯’。

We again have a phrase here, and it is reheat nachos.

这东西难吃死了。

Which are disgusting.

谁想要橡胶般嚼劲、湿软的重新加热的玉米片？

Who wants rubbery, soggy, reheated nachos?

这正是这个想法的核心。

And that is exactly the idea.

这指的是重新做某事，通常是音乐，或是以较差的方式重复旧点子。

This refers to redoing something, often it's music, or recycling an old idea, often in an inferior fashion.

所以当你重新做时，效果就没那么好了。

So it's not as good when you redo it.

但一位研究生站起来解释这个词时说，有时候它也可以是正面的，比如Lady Gaga重新加热了自己的玉米片，结果非常美味。

But a graduate student got up and as they explained this word, they said, sometimes it can be good as in Lady Gaga reheated her own nachos, and they were delicious.
