Speaker 1

Ciao, big guy.

Speaker 1

It's 6PM.

Speaker 1

It's cocktail hour.

Speaker 0

Wow.

Speaker 0

Good to see This

Speaker 1

this Negroni was purchased.

Speaker 1

It was sold premixed in a plastic bag that was like a and then in a little paper envelope.

Speaker 1

And then I poured it into this glass.

Speaker 1

It's pretty good.

Speaker 0

That sounds horrible.

Speaker 0

But okay.

Speaker 0

I'm happy for you.

Speaker 0

I'm happy you've got some some social lubrication for this conversation show.

Speaker 0

Hopefully, things will go great.

Speaker 0

Have you been having a nice time in Italy?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's been great.

Speaker 1

I'm very pro Italy.

Speaker 1

This has been a very fun experience of a festival.

Speaker 1

And it's of the this is my third time here.

Speaker 1

I would say that the crowd control is the best that it's been.

Speaker 1

The logistics are the best that it's been.

Speaker 1

This weekend had a fun party atmosphere to it.

Speaker 1

There were people around.

Speaker 1

I was seeing people I know.

Speaker 1

I've run into friends.

Speaker 1

And you know, maybe some of that is just that I've been coming long enough that I have festival friends and know the route.

Speaker 1

But it hasn't rained here, which is great.

Speaker 1

Last year, Yossi and I had to wade through a lot of light flooding.

Speaker 1

I almost got stuck on the Lido after Jay Kelly.

Speaker 1

And I've navigated the regatta with with no problems.

Speaker 1

You know about the regatta?

Speaker 0

I do because I've seen the film The Social Network.

Speaker 1

Didn't you know about the Venice regatta?

Speaker 0

Well, no.

Speaker 0

I mean, yes.

Speaker 1

That one's not in Venice.

Speaker 1

Every year, smack dab in the middle of the Venice Film Festival, they hold a historical regatta, and they close the main waterway.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

The Grand Canal in Venice, which is also like, you know, closing 5th Avenue in New York or something like they close the main street, and they also close many of the shuttles to and from the island where all of the films are.

Speaker 1

But I was not stopped, and I got a shuttle that worked.

Speaker 1

And I saw the films.

Speaker 1

And that's what I do.

Speaker 0

We will talk about those films.

Speaker 0

Every year when you go to this festival, you come on the pod and you start describing it, and you give me more and more reasons to never go.

Speaker 0

It's just amazing.

Speaker 0

There are so many things that make no sense about the Venice Film Festival.

Speaker 0

We'll get into all that.

Speaker 0

Before we talk about, the rest of our experiences at the festival, one of the things that you were hoping would be at the festival that you're at is the Luca Guadagnino film Artificial, which is the, since dispensed with by Amazon portrait of Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI, co founder, I should say.

Speaker 0

And we have a new trailer or teaser trailer for the film.

Speaker 0

This movie has been a subject of much discussion, I think, in the world of movie nerds, but I'm not totally sure if this film has quite reached the public at large.

Speaker 0

And so we got the first look at it now.

Speaker 0

It's coming out later this year from Neon.

Speaker 0

There's going to be a screening of the film at the New York Film Festival in one month.

Speaker 0

You've just watched it.

Speaker 0

I'm very curious for your thoughts on it given that you're a Luca, I don't know, don't know, completist defender?

Speaker 1

Well, I'm not a Luca completist because I did not make it to his seven or eight hour documentary about, Berlucci here at the festival.

Speaker 1

I saw a four hour documentary.

Speaker 1

So, you know, I'm doing my best, but seven was a bridge too far.

Speaker 1

So nor do I have any of Luca Guadagnino's Zara home collection, which Oh.

Speaker 1

I don't know if it's for sale yet.

Speaker 0

I see.

Speaker 1

But the images were released.

Speaker 1

So I'm an aspiring complete as I thought it was a good teaser.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's a minute.

Speaker 1

It's just I mean, it's, you know, pure editing, and you just you get kind of one shot flashes of everything except for Andrew Garfield doing his best.

Speaker 1

Jesse Eisenberg walking through the square of Harvard and the opening of social network.

Speaker 1

They are leaning into the the homage of and trying to draw a line from that film to this film.

Speaker 1

I'm okay with that because that's one of my favorite films of my lifetime.

Speaker 1

I would really like to see this movie.

Speaker 1

I think it would have fit in at the Venice Film Fest ival this year and some of the movies that I've seen.

Speaker 1

But, you know, you get what you get, and you don't get upset.

Speaker 0

I I love when you speak to me like I'm a toddler.

Speaker 1

Well, I mean, that's what they teach us in the Montessori way.

Speaker 0

I I'm aware.

Speaker 0

I I have heard such wildly different reactions to the movie from people who have seen it.

Speaker 0

I have been told that this is gonna be one of the funniest movies of the year.

Speaker 0

I've been told this is one of the bleakest movies of the year.

Speaker 0

I totally agree with what you're saying about its clear connectivity to the social network and the idea that OpenAI and the AI rush feels like a kind of two decades later extension of what Mark Zuckerberg helped to launch in the world of social media in the two thousands.

Speaker 0

I I hope this is good.

Speaker 0

I don't I don't, know, I don't really know what to say.

Speaker 0

Garfield, Yuriborosov, you mentioned that you saw a four hour documentary, which I know was about Elon Musk.

Speaker 0

He is portrayed here in this movie by Ike Barenholtz.

Speaker 0

Monica Barber was in the film.

Speaker 0

Pretty excited.

Speaker 0

It sounds like it's going to come at the end of the year and then go wide to the public at the beginning of twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 0

So it's still a long ways away, but so far so good.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Where would you like to start?

Speaker 0

Would you like me to start?

Speaker 1

好。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I I did.

Speaker 1

I taught you about the regatta, you can teach me about, you know, how one gets into a secret screening.

Speaker 0

Oh, sure.

Speaker 0

That would that maybe we should we should probably just talk about that.

Speaker 0

那是

That's

Speaker 1

the Okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, we're gonna do a whole conversation about the summer at the movies on Friday.

Speaker 0

So from here on out, it's all Fall Film Festival stuff.

Speaker 0

If you don't want any of it spoiled for you, I understand.

Speaker 0

I won't be spoiling any of the movies.

Speaker 0

Amanda won't be spoiling any of the movies.

Speaker 0

We'll just be talking about what we liked and why and what the atmosphere was like.

Speaker 0

And, you know, Telluride, it's pretty safe to say, was defined this year by a secret screening.

Speaker 0

Doing some press beforehand, the director of the festival, Julie Huntzinger, in an interview with Variety noted that there was a a true TBA on the calendar, a to be announced film, which is something that happens every year.

Speaker 0

There are always TBAs on the calendar.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's a, you know, a smaller film, an independent film that hadn't been previously announced.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's just a repeat of a movie that had been playing really well across the festival.

Speaker 0

One of the great things about Telluride is that the films play three, four, five times.

Speaker 0

So in this case, this was a true TBA.

Speaker 0

Nobody knew what the movie was.

Speaker 0

And it became the talking point in every line at every movie over two and a half days.

Speaker 0

What is it?

Speaker 0

What is it?

Speaker 0

What is it?

Speaker 0

Many guesses, many wrong guesses, lots of anticipation and speculation.

Speaker 0

I think it created a little bit of a sense of anxiety at the festival because everyone was starting to get worried if they could get in to the screening.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Which, you know, the Werner Herzog Theater, which is one of the primary theaters at the festival, is fairly big.

Speaker 0

I want to say it has maybe a 600 person capacity, maybe more than that, but it's not huge.

Speaker 0

And there are thousands of people at the festival in this tiny town in Colorado.

Speaker 0

And I did know what it was, which was very strange.

Speaker 0

Because Yeah.

Speaker 0

I every single conversation that you have with people, they're like, do you know?

Speaker 0

Do you know?

Speaker 0

Do you know?

Speaker 0

I knew it was gonna be a big deal, but I don't think I anticipated quite how big a deal it was gonna turn out to be.

Speaker 1

Did you what was your strategy when people asked you?

Speaker 0

I I know when I I'm sorry, but I can't say.

Speaker 0

And I I was so lock and key with it the entire time.

Speaker 0

And I was I honestly, I'm proud of myself.

Speaker 0

Felt like I I I feel like I could work for the government now.

Speaker 1

I if you want to, I guess.

Speaker 1

I think you did a great job.

Speaker 1

I question at some point, I think that you should have just started lying and just be like, I don't know.

Speaker 1

And I understand that, you know, knowledge is, you know, currency, and it's it's very cool.

Speaker 1

And I actually got angry text messages from friends of ours asking if I knew so that because you wouldn't tell them.

Speaker 1

And I also kept a secret just so everybody knows.

Speaker 1

But it's kind of annoying.

Speaker 1

It's sort of like the extended version of, yeah, well, I've seen this movie six months ago, but we can't talk

Speaker 0

关于它

about it for

Speaker 1

a while.

Speaker 0

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 0

Know what?

Speaker 0

Annoying is just a part of life for me.

Speaker 0

There's not really anything I can do about that.

Speaker 0

The problem is is if you tell one person you know, then it gets out pretty quickly that, oh, well, Sean knows.

Speaker 0

And so accounting for that was it was fine.

Speaker 0

It it was honestly fun to hear people guessing.

Speaker 0

The guesses were myriad.

Speaker 0

They were, is it the new Terrence Malick film?

Speaker 0

Is it Frank Ocean's A24 movie?

Speaker 0

Is it Zac Efron's movie Famous?

Speaker 0

Is it there were movies that haven't even been shot yet that were being guessed about.

Speaker 0

It it became clear that it was a documentary at a certain point because of the way that the information had had spread.

Speaker 0

Then And it ultimately was revealed that it was a Nathan Fielder project, and then it was a Nathan Fielder project about Elizabeth Holmes.

Speaker 0

Now to some people, I think that that would be really, really exciting.

Speaker 0

Somebody like me who, you know, like loves Nathan and has been kind of, you know, venerating all the projects he's been doing since Nathan for You.

Speaker 0

I mean, I think other people are like, a documentary?

Speaker 0

And it's three hours long?

Speaker 0

And about Elizabeth Holmes, who like has already gone through the content meat grinder in so many ways, books and television shows and podcasts.

Speaker 0

And, you know, her story has been told so many times.

Speaker 0

So anyway, by the time we were in line to get into the movie, which was on Sunday night, which is not quite the end of the festival, but more or less is kind of the closing evening, would say about 50% of the people in the line that I was in felt like they had a handle on what the movie was.

Speaker 0

And so then it became this question of, well, this better be good.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

对。

Like Yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm I'm because when you get in line at Telluride, you do have to sometimes wait an hour or two hours.

Speaker 0

I saw a film at the theater where the where the, You Can See Everything, the Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim film played, at 12:45PM.

Speaker 0

And so I arrived at that theater at twelve, and there were people who were already in line for a 06:15 showing of the secret screening.

Speaker 0

That's that's really early.

Speaker 1

I think you saying that you arrived thirty minutes early for the first screening of this, is the most obnoxious thing that you've said on this podcast.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

And that's I'm that's not that's not what I said.

Speaker 0

I said to the to the 12:45 screening earlier in the day, I showed up thirty minutes early.

Speaker 1

Of, oh, a movie that was not that movie.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

我本来

I was

Speaker 1

gonna be like, that's listen.

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

I showed up I was meant to Telluride.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

行。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Should have told you I was gonna tell Yeah.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

And and and I'm, you know, I'm very fortunate as a member of the press and somebody who, you know, knows a lot of the people that were trying to get people into the screening that like, I didn't have a hard time getting in.

Speaker 0

It did become a fairly exclusive line though, because the way that Telluride works, as I've talked about many times over the years, is there's a group of people who are called patrons.

Speaker 0

They have very special passes.

Speaker 0

They pay a lot of money for those passes.

Speaker 0

They get first rights into the door.

Speaker 0

So because of their passes, they are the supreme leaders of Telluride.

Speaker 0

The press gets treated very well at Telluride.

Speaker 0

I love my experience there.

Speaker 0

We're not quite at that high tier, but in the right circumstances, you can get in somewhat early into screenings.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Then there are people who, of course, are celebrities and work in the movie business.

Speaker 0

And I've not seen so many people from so many studios that didn't make the movie at a screening like this.

Speaker 0

On top of the fact that, you know, all the stars, like, you know, Jordan Firstman and the cast of Club Kid were all there.

Speaker 0

You know, like the whole whole raft of famous people were also in the screening room.

Speaker 0

So I don't know how many regular festival goers got in.

Speaker 0

Maybe a 100, maybe less, not a lot.

Speaker 0

So this was a fairly exclusive room, and the film only played once, and it was three hours, and so you effectively had to give the entire seven hours of the last night of the festival over to this movie.

Speaker 0

So a lot of people were like, this better be good.

Speaker 0

And it was fucking amazing.

Speaker 0

And, you know, it's it's so rare that something that everybody is like, oh my god, I hope this is good.

Speaker 0

Hope this is good for it to be good.

Speaker 0

It's such a rare feeling, Amanda.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I am I'm quite jealous.

Speaker 1

I We were texting because many Much of the A24 team and Lance Oppenheim, who also directed Prime Time, which debuted here at Venice on Saturday night, the 5PM slot.

Speaker 1

And it was like the big scene premier of the week and and the big party of the week.

Speaker 1

And it was really fun.

Speaker 1

But so I met Lance.

Speaker 1

I met his entire family, congratulated them on prime time.

Speaker 1

And they were in Venice, like, midnight local time Venice, and then made it to and, like, all traveled and made it to Telluride in time for this premiere.

Speaker 1

So, like, I had an inkling and was just incredibly jealous and remain incredibly jealous.

Speaker 1

And everyone working on the team now knows when I land in Los Angeles so that I can then see it in Los Angeles.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna send some more follow-up texts as soon as we're done recording.

Speaker 1

Hi, guys.

Speaker 1

I love you.

Speaker 1

That said, I didn't even read your entire newsletter because I don't wanna know anything else.

Speaker 1

All I know like, I've watched the teaser, and I know that I know what Nathan Fielder said as soon as he walked on the stage, which you can share with people.

Speaker 1

And I kind of don't wanna know anymore.

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 0

确实。

I know.

Speaker 0

I'll try to respect that and be careful in this conversation because I think it's fascinating to me how quickly the teaser went viral.

Speaker 0

And I think it kind of indicates the curiosity that drives so much of the movie.

Speaker 0

And I think the teaser is in some ways an accurate reflection of the film, and in other ways a little bit of a wrong footing of what the movie is, and is a really great draw into the story.

Speaker 0

But it does start out as what it looks like, which is Nathan Fielder shooting a sort of a hybrid of a lot of the work that he's done on the rehearsal and on The Curse and on Nathan for You, and as a sort of like snapshot of Elizabeth Holmes in the final days before she goes to federal prison.

Speaker 0

And then the film goes in many, many other directions from there.

Speaker 0

I thought it was like a fascinatingly form breaking approach to telling a story.

Speaker 0

It's three hours for a reason.

Speaker 0

It's sort of a bifurcated story.

Speaker 0

The first half is what it looks like.

Speaker 0

The second half, it goes in wild directions.

Speaker 0

You know, before the film started, Nathan and Lance came out after Julie introduced them.

Speaker 0

And Julie was like giddy and ecstatic introducing the movie, which is also dangerous to kind of set people up that you're like so excited to have something.

Speaker 0

And then they came out, and you know, they're both very low key downbeat.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

You know, Nathan doing his kind of like, hey, hope you guys like You know, even though you've all been waiting, you know, seventy two hours to see this movie.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Lance jet lagged?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Previously discussed.

Speaker 0

Although I I also spoke with him after the film, he seemed more awake than I was, so I was impressed.

Speaker 0

And the movie played like gangbusters, and it became pretty much the only thing that anybody wanted to talk about in the ensuing twenty four hours of the festival.

Speaker 0

And I think there are a lot of reasons for that.

Speaker 0

I do think that some of this is, of course, the natural festival high of you make a big trip to go somewhere, and you want it to be worth it.

Speaker 0

Like you were describing your experience in Venice and how it's been like a good Venice, and you've had like a good slate of films, and you see friends that you like.

Speaker 1

The films, good experience.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

But and that's part of it too is Yeah.

Speaker 0

The the films sometimes matter just as much as the experience.

Speaker 0

And this was kind of a fusion of those two things.

Speaker 0

This was an event, and it was a movie.

Speaker 0

And those two things colliding in this way, I think were really exciting and gratifying.

Speaker 0

To me, as somebody who really loves documentary and is fascinated by the form of documentary, the fact that this is something that felt part of a lineage and also very new, I really enjoyed.

Speaker 0

I love portraits of complex people who we don't know whether we should trust or not.

Speaker 0

And what is the true self, I think is kind of the overarching concept of the movie.

Speaker 0

I'm trying to be very careful here.

Speaker 0

Now, when the movie ended, Lance and Nathan came out for an interview, which was moderated by Emma Stone, which is just some, like, classic Telluride shit.

Speaker 0

You know, like, Emma Stone's here.

Speaker 0

She's gonna do the q and a.

Speaker 0

And she was a very good moderator and asked five very simple and straightforward and good questions.

Speaker 0

And when the film ended, I watched a bunch of people leave the screening and not sit for the q and a, which I found baffling because I've never wanted to hear a q and a more after a movie.

Speaker 0

However, one thing I should mention is they did bag our phones at this screening, which has never happened to me in film festival history.

Speaker 0

So no one had access to their cell phone for almost five hours.

Speaker 0

So I guess some people were desperate to just race out and tweet about what they had just seen or something.

Speaker 1

But Or like chicken with their family.

Speaker 1

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

That's generous.

Speaker 1

I mean, whatever.

Speaker 1

这些人

These people

Speaker 0

don't give a fuck about their family.

Speaker 1

They went to Telluride to watch movies.

Speaker 1

Guess it's true.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

I still remember bartering with the Spider Man press people about, like, I'm really pregnant, and I need my phone in case something happens.

Speaker 0

I remember that.

Speaker 0

I remember that.

Speaker 0

So, anyway, you know, we didn't we didn't have our phones.

Speaker 0

We were we were a true a truly captive audience.

Speaker 0

And in the conversation afterwards, they talked about how they still don't really know what to make of what they made and and how they made it.

Speaker 0

And to see them so unguarded about that, and especially Nathan, who, as much as he is a filmmaker and a TV show, impresario, and a documentarian, is also like he's a character.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

He's a performer.

Speaker 0

And he Sure.

Speaker 1

That's part of his art.

Speaker 1

That's part of well, his his art and his work and his however you wanna define.

Speaker 1

I mean, it is art, but it's also journalism and also, you know

Speaker 0

I always think of it as anthropology.

Speaker 1

Cultural criticism?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I always think of it as him trying to kind of understand human relationships and interactions and and reactions.

Speaker 0

And this movie is a huge part of that project.

Speaker 0

But they both were, and Nathan even more so than Lance, were still a little bit just about gobsmacked about what they had done.

Speaker 0

And this project, I think it started in 2023.

Speaker 0

It's been going on for a number of years.

Speaker 0

And they stopped after a period of time and then came back to it.

Speaker 0

And you can see that it was, in the making of it, it was something that they were figuring out in real time, especially the second half of the film.

Speaker 0

They kind of got to the end of the moment when Elizabeth Holmes goes to prison and had to think about where they wanted to go next.

Speaker 0

And it's an extraordinary thing.

Speaker 0

And I'm really happy to have been in the room.

Speaker 0

I feel very lucky to have been in the room.

Speaker 0

The cool thing is, in addition to this kind of simultaneous release of that teaser that you mentioned, the movie's coming out soon, which I think is It's coming out in October.

Speaker 0

And thank goodness, I think kind of like lording this over people would not only be obnoxious for me, but even from the studio and the people who made it, there's there's this kind of urgency to want to see this thing, which is really cool.

Speaker 0

And now it Right.

Speaker 0

It immediately falls into the category of like, well, now it's been overhyped.

Speaker 0

But I I just have to give you like an honest reaction to how I felt in the room, which was we were we were we were buzzing.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

I I was watching from afar.

Speaker 1

And then until with with some envy.

Speaker 1

And until Sunday, it had seemed like the festivals were kind of we had many of the same films.

Speaker 1

Many went from Venice to Telluride.

Speaker 1

You know, we had the we had Liam and Noel Gallagher and Oasis on Saturday night.

Speaker 1

And, you know, I'll talk about that.

Speaker 1

And so

Speaker 0

I'm jealous of that.

Speaker 1

They were it was like it it was even, and we were having different experiences.

Speaker 1

But, like, you were in the mountains, and I was having a tremendous number of spritzes and and, like, life was good.

Speaker 1

And, you know, and then it was like the whole prime time crew, like, left.

Speaker 1

And and and the the energy shifted.

Speaker 1

And I was like, I really wanna be I really wanna be seeing this.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And and also somehow I'm, like, still in Venice, so I can't see it yet.

Speaker 1

I can't believe this happens every year.

Speaker 1

Why am I still

Speaker 0

in Venice?

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 1

It's okay.

Speaker 0

You extended again this year.

Speaker 0

You're like, I think one more day I have to see something.

Speaker 0

I was like, good morning.

Speaker 1

Honestly, I extended at this point so that we could record, and we didn't have to record so late because it takes like a full day to get back home.

Speaker 1

But I should have come home on Monday, but that's okay.

Speaker 1

I'm I really want to see it.

Speaker 1

Let's let's talk about Oscars.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, people have been bringing this up.

Speaker 0

I saw Clayton Davis of Variety immediately after the movie, and invariably, that conversation just started right away.

Speaker 0

And Clayton and I were sort of talking about there's one component of the movie that I do not want to spoil for people that I think kind of shatters this conversation in a really interesting way.

Speaker 0

So I'm not gonna do it.

Speaker 0

I'm not gonna talk about that.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Is it gonna be eligible for the best documentary?

Speaker 0

It will be.

Speaker 0

The documentary branch is a little It's weird.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

They're a little tricky when it comes to celebrity focused stories, which this sort of is.

Speaker 0

They're a little tricky when it comes to true crime.

Speaker 0

They're a little tricky when it comes to celebrity filmmakers.

Speaker 0

So, and because this is so form breaking, maybe they'll embrace it, maybe they won't.

Speaker 0

It's a little hard to say.

Speaker 0

I heard people talking about Best Picture.

Speaker 0

That seems like a reach to me.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I would campaign for it.

Speaker 0

It's right near the top of my favorite movies that I've seen this year.

Speaker 0

Like, we'll be talking about it quite a bit.

Speaker 0

I've already had to, like, look at the October schedule and be like, oh, fuck.

Speaker 0

I gotta break this and start all over again because we're gonna do at least one conversation about the movie itself.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

It it is but it is unique.

Speaker 0

I mean, it's a Nathan Fielder project.

Speaker 0

Like, it's not inherently mega commercial, but what it is is it's something new in the mix and something that I had texted you, and that you and I have been talking about for months, is that it's so weird how it seems like for the most part, the awards calendar and our expectations of what's coming feels hugely settled right now with the exception of like two or three movies.

Speaker 0

Like I said to you, Digger and Dune are two movies that nobody has seen.

Speaker 0

Maybe Werewolf, but probably not.

Speaker 0

And and but everything else, we kind of know what it is.

Speaker 0

I guess you could put Artificial on that list.

Speaker 0

A handful of movies are yet to be seen, but this was the first thing in a while where I was like, oh, this could upend some of our expectations of what's happening this season.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

I mean, from afar, do you have any thoughts on it?

Speaker 1

I mean, I think we were also hungry for that.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Is that we even we went into the festivals and we identified, you know, okay, this premiere, this premiere, this will get this slot, this slot.

Speaker 1

And for the most part, we'll talk about them individually.

Speaker 1

But the the films met our expectations.

Speaker 1

And so you're you're kind of assigning everything, doing your little draft board.

Speaker 1

And it's clear, but it's I think it's been confusing and also just a little narratively frustrating to us.

Speaker 1

Like, we have six months of a show to do, and we already know everything.

Speaker 1

Like, what?

Speaker 1

You gotta give us something else.

Speaker 1

Like, give me a fall.

Speaker 1

Give me a fall thing.

Speaker 1

So that's very was that's the genius of a surprise drop.

Speaker 0

It is.

Speaker 0

And, you know, that actually kind of speaks to a little bit of the vibe for me personally at Telluride, which I think is quite different from other people.

Speaker 0

So because we had the chance to go to the Cannes Film Festival this year Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Roughly 40% of the slate at Telluride I had already seen.

Speaker 0

So And it created a different kind of experience for me where I didn't see as many movies as I usually do, the timing didn't work for as many things, and there were frequently times when I would look at the calendar and be like, seen that, seen that, seen that, seen that, and then not really have anything to do, which

Speaker 1

What did you do?

Speaker 0

I hung out with friends, had a meal.

Speaker 0

I don't usually eat a lot of meals.

Speaker 0

I had some meals.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I'm so proud of you.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

I also was sick the entire weekend, which was not ideal, but I powered through.

Speaker 0

I kept my head up.

Speaker 0

Anyhow, because of that, I think that it was a very, very good Telluride.

Speaker 0

Like, if you came into the festival, like almost everyone there, not having seen Club Kid or Fjord or La Bola Negra or Minotaur or the the huge number of can titles that came over.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, I would say specifically Club Kid and La Bola Negra played huge at the festival.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

People loved both of them.

Speaker 0

And I'm not super surprised by that, but it was clear that those movies are going to have a life after this.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's club kid season.

Speaker 1

I'm ready.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I and I saw Jordan Firstman and Alex Coco in the airport before we got on the plane to go.

Speaker 0

And we were talking and they were like, oh, I feel like people are forgetting about the movie.

Speaker 0

And I was like, you're gonna be fine.

Speaker 0

Nope.

Speaker 0

You're gonna be fine.

Speaker 0

You're be fine.

Speaker 0

Don't worry, guys.

Speaker 0

Like this.

Speaker 0

People are gonna see the movie.

Speaker 0

They're gonna love the movie.

Speaker 0

They had Reggie, the young actor who plays the kid in the movie.

Speaker 1

I know it's a cop.

Speaker 0

He he was doing great.

Speaker 1

His so his Instagram account is still managed by his parents, but they did a reel of, like, his highlights at Telluride.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 1

Great stuff

Speaker 0

get away.

Speaker 0

Charming He everybody.

Speaker 0

So the vibe there was good.

Speaker 0

I mean, you know, we can get into the the new movies.

Speaker 0

Like you said, we have a lot crossover for some of the films that played at the festival.

Speaker 0

But in general, I thought the vibe was good.

Speaker 0

The weather was very good.

Speaker 0

Everyone seemed happy.

Speaker 0

It's my happiest place on earth.

Speaker 0

I thought it was this at the end of this year, despite being really sick,

Speaker 1

listen.

Speaker 1

I I like, I have this on lock now, and I'm really proud of myself.

Speaker 1

But I've thought about just how much you would be weeping and bitching, like, everywhere I've gone this festival.

Speaker 0

Well, you're stronger I than I

Speaker 1

can't even yeah.

Speaker 1

I am.

Speaker 1

And, you know, you don't the limes are not a thing here.

Speaker 1

Instead, you have spritzes.

Speaker 1

So Okay.

Speaker 1

That's really nice.

Speaker 1

Or go on a boat.

Speaker 1

But you would hate the boat.

Speaker 1

Do you get seasick?

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

不会。

No.

Speaker 0

I grew up on Long Island.

Speaker 0

Seasick.

Speaker 0

What are you talking about?

Speaker 0

I grew up on

Speaker 1

boats.

Speaker 1

Fuck.

Speaker 1

I It's an island.

Speaker 1

You don't it is an island, but you don't really take the boat to go anywhere.

Speaker 0

I I took a boat to school every morning, six hours across the Long Island Sound.

Speaker 1

Congratulations.

Speaker 0

So I guess the last thing I'll say about just the general mood and atmosphere is I think I do think that the Odyssey, like, put a little bit of a dent in some of the vibe, which was for like the Oscar stuff that you're describing.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

But in a good way, where it was sort of like, let's just enjoy what we have here instead of it being like a series of conversations.

Speaker 0

Because, you know, there are a lot of awards pundits at the festival.

Speaker 0

There are lot of people who spend a lot of time thinking about this stuff and strategizing that six month calendar from this point forward.

Speaker 0

We do plenty of it on the show, But it became more of a like, did you like it or did you not like it?

Speaker 0

And there were a couple of titles like Elsinore, for example, where it was like kind of the only conversation about it is, is Andrew Scott a best actor contender?

Speaker 0

But not really a lot of movies led with that, which I was grateful for, at least for for me.

Speaker 0

And also just that having gone there now, I think eight or nine years, I have a lot of friends there.

Speaker 0

Like you said, you said you have your your Venice friends.

Speaker 0

And so there's And

Speaker 1

made new ones too, which is really

Speaker 0

fun.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So it's great.

Speaker 0

So I and I met so many so many young people in the student symposium, just like young people in their twenties who were just like, this was my big splurge for the year.

Speaker 0

I heard you talk about it on the show.

Speaker 0

I really wanted to be here.

Speaker 0

Every person there is so fucking nice.

Speaker 0

Like it's just the most pleasant, convivial, sincere collection of movie nerds.

Speaker 0

So I I once again had a wonderful time.

Speaker 0

What was the what was the actual vibe like in Venice?

Speaker 1

So I think last year I mentioned that it was pretty last year was very oversubscribed.

Speaker 1

And it seems like none of the logistics were in place, and there are too many people and not enough boats and not enough spaces at a festival where you really do have to have the logistics nailed down because you can't just walk everywhere.

Speaker 1

Like, you do have to take a boat.

Speaker 1

The Lido is its own island separate from, like, the Venice that you see on postcards.

Speaker 1

So this year, I'm happy to say and I wonder if it's because this year was also the Art Biennale, which is only every other year.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

And you had been there when that was happening before.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

I you know what?

Speaker 1

This is my first year.

Speaker 1

The other two years, I've been on the off years.

Speaker 1

Oh, okay.

Speaker 1

And so the Biennale, the, you know, the the openings and all the the big part of the festival happens, I think, in May or June, earlier in the summer.

Speaker 1

But the pavilions are still open, and so it seems like the infrastructure is just kind of held over and in place.

Speaker 1

And so it's been it's been a fun vibe.

Speaker 1

I think there were slightly lower expectations movie wise because the lineup was, you know, most of the big Hollywood expected movies were not on the lineup.

Speaker 1

And so I, you know, I heard of a couple journalists who even switched from Venice to Telluride because they couldn't justify it.

Speaker 1

But with low expectations comes, you know, the possibility to have a lot of fun and to see movies you like.

Speaker 1

And then other you know, the it just wasn't as stressful this year.

Speaker 1

It was everyone just kind of rolling in and out of stuff.

Speaker 1

I have also met a lot of young people who and a lot of Italian young people who apparently listen to the big picture.

Speaker 1

And Ciao.

Speaker 1

Then and then Ciao.

Speaker 1

And made their way here.

Speaker 1

So so that's very fun.

Speaker 1

And then Saturday was really fun.

Speaker 1

Saturday was a jam because everyone as soon as the schedule was released, we all identified, okay, prime time has a 5PM Saturday premier.

Speaker 1

And that's like that is in fact prime time at Venice.

Speaker 1

And there's that's also kinda like that's not going to Telluride probably.

Speaker 1

So because of the way the schedule works, Saturday is too late to get over.

Speaker 1

To tell you're right in time.

Speaker 0

So you're like, this is this is our centerpiece of it.

Speaker 1

This is this is gonna be it.

Speaker 1

And, you know, and, like, Pattinson will probably be there, and they'll use his star power.

Speaker 1

And you can just kinda, like, feel it going.

Speaker 1

And so, you know, 5PM on Saturday also leaves time for a great eight twenty four party, which definitely happened.

Speaker 1

And then I realized also that Oasis, don't look back in anger, the documentary about the recent tour, was premiering afterwards.

Speaker 1

I was like, oh my god.

Speaker 1

They're gonna get Liam and Noel.

Speaker 1

So I did not I only went to the prime time premier

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那场

Which

Speaker 1

I had a great time at.

Speaker 1

And then listen, parties remain unmatched.

Speaker 1

Thank you guys so much for everything that you do.

Speaker 0

Are you thinking parties as a concept right now?

Speaker 0

你是说

What are

Speaker 1

you I'm thinking of the a 24 parties as a concept.

Speaker 1

And like I said, I met Lance Oppenheim's entire family.

Speaker 1

They were like, we haven't slept in a week.

Speaker 1

We were so nervous.

Speaker 1

They were so sweet.

Speaker 1

So that was really fun.

Speaker 1

And I had see so I didn't go to the Oasis premiere, but I did see it in the morning.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

I did start crying at, like, 08:45 in the morning while singing at the, like, top of my lungs along

Speaker 0

to Were people singing along in the movie?

Speaker 1

Not really, but I was.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

That sounds kind of obnoxious if you were the only person singing along.

Speaker 1

At a very low volume.

Speaker 1

Like, I wasn't, like, up there waving my phone doing don't look back in anger.

Speaker 1

Like, what are we talking about?

Speaker 1

I was just kind of

Speaker 0

I would watch it.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

I was I was I was having a good time.

Speaker 1

I was in the moment of this very wonderful documentary.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

And and so as we left the Lido on Saturday night to go to our party, like the Oasis premier people were arriving.

Speaker 1

And I didn't see Liam and Noel arrive on their water taxi as I had a few hours before, but it was it was convivial.

Speaker 1

It was like, this is the place to be for about six or seven hours.

Speaker 0

Did I it seemed in the photos that they were they were warm to one another.

Speaker 0

They seem to have embraced each other.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, one of the most moving things of the documentary because it's it's the whole tour, and so it's you know, they filmed every show.

Speaker 1

And it's just the montages of every single time they walked on stage, Liam grabbing Noel's hand and holding it up, and I'm holding hands together.

Speaker 1

And the the the rediscovered, if not love I mean, love.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

The way that they express love of this movie is so moving.

Speaker 1

It was incredible.

Speaker 0

That's great.

Speaker 1

Can't believe it.

Speaker 0

I'm supposed to see it this week.

Speaker 0

I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 1

It's I mean, it's a delightful time.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, they're in decent spirits.

Speaker 1

I mean, not decent enough to get Noel to, like, wear real pants instead of jeans, but whatever.

Speaker 1

It's a Noel moof.

Speaker 1

You are the Noel.

Speaker 1

I'm the Liam.

Speaker 1

It's just how life goes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm very proud of that fact.

Speaker 0

So it was a good vibe is what you would say.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It was it was good, and it was a fun vibe.

Speaker 1

Now everyone's like, why are we still here, and why are we seeing, like, junky movies?

Speaker 1

The I saw two movies this morning in competition that I we don't really need to talk about on this podcast.

Speaker 0

Oh, wow.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

We won't even utter their names.

Speaker 1

I mean, we can.

Speaker 1

Their company directed by Casey Asfleck

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

Affleck and Bunker directed by Florian Zeller starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

Speaker 0

Well, it's good to know that that that those were not successful in in in your opinion.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I didn't I mean, it's a beautiful home in the in Bunker.

Speaker 1

It's like a really,

Speaker 0

really As you know, I am a Florian Zeller denier.

Speaker 0

I have never really I've never really understood.

Speaker 1

And and I was thinking about you and the sun.

Speaker 1

Like, thirty minutes into this movie, was like, no.

Speaker 1

This is we just we don't got it.

Speaker 1

There are a couple interesting scenes, but I thought it was silly and inept.

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, that's I think that speaks to the Film Festival experience, which is you go in knowing there's probably gonna be two or things two or three things you're gonna love.

Speaker 0

You go there's two or three things you know you have to see that are like a part of the reason you went.

Speaker 0

And then a lot of it is a coin flip.

Speaker 0

Know, a lot of it is we don't really know which way this is going to break, and so there is a lot of risk taking that comes into it.

Speaker 0

And a lot of do you have the same kind of schedule time management?

Speaker 0

Because I see that you're seeing like two, maybe three movies a day.

Speaker 0

When I'm really going hard at a film festival, I'm trying to see four, and maybe even sometimes five if I'm really crazy.

Speaker 0

This year, I only saw four on one day, but the the schedule stack strategy is challenging at Telluride to make sure that you get to see what you want.

Speaker 0

And I missed some stuff this year that I I regret missing.

Speaker 0

How how is that for you at Venice?

Speaker 1

Well, the it's really, really hard to do four in a day.

Speaker 1

I did three in a day, and that was from begging a lot of publicists to get me tickets to premieres.

Speaker 1

Because the way it works here is there are press screenings, there are market screenings, and then there are public screenings and and premieres that are also open to the public, which is cool.

Speaker 1

So you can get you can buy a ticket and roll up to the Oasis Don't Look Back in Anger premiere, which I just I I'm excited for all of those people.

Speaker 0

And your seat is reserved?

Speaker 1

In the premieres, yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You get an assigned seat.

Speaker 1

And so and, know, the press screenings work differently, but they they only show three press movies a day.

Speaker 1

They parcel them out over the course of the festival.

Speaker 1

And so, you know, they'll do two press screenings on premiere day for each movie, and then there will be, like, one makeup at a later date.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 1

But then everything else is public, and so you're competing with other people, and it's hard to get tickets.

Speaker 1

And there is a ticketing platform, la the can ticketing platform that I'm sure you still have nightmares about.

Speaker 1

And so it's hard to make the schedule work where you can get four every day.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's just then when you add in the logistics of it, it's hard to stay on the Lido because it's a small island with not that much accommodation.

Speaker 1

So the getting back and forth to it with the boats, you know, is the stacking three is the sign of a good day.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That sounds challenging.

Speaker 0

I mean, one of the wonderful things about Telluride is just the conquerability of it.

Speaker 0

You know, the fact that it is essentially seven or eight theaters that are spread across this small town, and you can walk roughly three quarters of a mile all the way across town, and just make it and bounce.

Speaker 0

And for example, on Saturday, I saw four movies, and none of them were in the same theater, so I was constantly walking back and forth.

Speaker 0

And sure, I got 15,000 steps that day, but it was totally manageable and not that hard, and still giving yourself time to eat and wait in line for the appropriate amount of time that you needed to.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

And so

Speaker 1

Are you eating in line?

Speaker 0

Sometimes if you're down at the Herzog, they have a hot dog stand.

Speaker 0

So it's like very efficient to just grab a Gatorade and a hot dog, just power up, get some protein, get in a movie.

Speaker 0

But Okay.

Speaker 0

That's like the best you can do.

Speaker 0

A there's a pizza there's a pizza place in Telluride called Brown Dog Pizza, which is like a a great pizza place.

Speaker 0

But it's you would think that it's like Spago in 1984.

Speaker 0

Like, is like just full of people.

Speaker 0

The wine is like it's like a two hour wait to get a seat at a pizzeria.

Speaker 1

But there aren't like official, like, cantinas or like pop up places?

Speaker 0

Not really.

Speaker 0

I mean, it's such an it's an unincorporated town, you know?

Speaker 0

Like, you can't bring in the big businesses.

Speaker 0

There's no sponsors like that.

Speaker 1

Oh, right.

Speaker 1

I guess they're the sponsors.

Speaker 1

Because listen, here's the thing.

Speaker 1

You can get a spritz and some potato chips literally anywhere.

Speaker 1

I I snuck one into part two of Musk last night.

Speaker 0

Oh, wow.

Speaker 1

And they did and the potato chips come I mean, it was four hours long.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And and like part two was was Trump and Twitter.

Speaker 1

So I was like, I'm gonna have a spritz for this.

Speaker 0

So you can bring a cot like a drink into the screenings?

Speaker 1

不行。

No.

Speaker 1

I poured it into a water bottle.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

It was like teenage behavior.

Speaker 1

But like, do you do you understand

Speaker 0

it's spring vodka screwdriver?

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

So it was like day seven.

Speaker 1

I'm still in Venice because they spread the movies out.

Speaker 1

So you're still in Venice.

Speaker 1

I'm homesick, and I have to watch two hour two more hours of Musk, Trump, and Twitter.

Speaker 1

And I was like, I'm gonna have a spritz.

Speaker 1

The spritz also no gin.

Speaker 1

This is kind of this has been my trick, this this festival.

Speaker 1

But, yeah, that part's amazing.

Speaker 1

Just everywhere you go.

Speaker 1

They're like here.

Speaker 1

And the potato chips just come with the drink.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because I was sick, there was zero alcohol consumption over the weekend, which is probably a good thing, honestly.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, I'm trying to think of what else I should share that is notable from Telluride before we get into the movies themselves.

Speaker 1

Do you hike?

Speaker 0

Don't usually have Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, I'm not I'm not averse to it at all.

Speaker 0

Part of part of the interesting thing, I was just posting photos on Instagram, it's just like you are in the middle of town.

Speaker 0

You are surrounded by epic natural beauty.

Speaker 0

I mean, the the town is surrounded on both sides by two mountain ranges, and there are rivers wherever you walk.

Speaker 0

And so you are really in the heart of what you would go hike to seek.

Speaker 0

You know what I mean?

Speaker 0

It's not it's not like you have to go to find it.

Speaker 0

Now, there there is an entire part of the festival that happens on top of the mountain where you take a gondola up, and there are two theaters up there now.

Speaker 0

One of them is called the Chuck Jones Cinema, and they added a second one this year called the Marvin.

Speaker 0

And I don't usually go up there.

Speaker 0

But if you go up there, there's a large hotel up there where a lot of the celebrities and filmmakers stay.

Speaker 1

Oh, interesting.

Speaker 0

That that sort of it sort of splits the festival in two.

Speaker 0

I don't like the theater as much on top of the mountain, so I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Speaker 0

But there are a lot of people who spend most of their time up there.

Speaker 0

And up there, there's also lots of hiking and cycling, and you can go fishing, and there's a lot of things you can do.

Speaker 0

So a lot and that's the funny thing too is when you're there, there are a lot of people who just live there or who are just visiting the town to hang out with no intention of seeing any movies because there's parties and restaurants.

Speaker 1

I mean, yeah, same here.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So even though it is not, you know, a world famous global capital like Venice, it still is like drawing a lot of, I guess, like, looky loos for lack of a better word, you know, just like regular folk who are like, I'm gonna see what's going on in this town this weekend.

Speaker 0

So it's an interesting collection of people that are attending as opposed to, like, when you're at the New York Film Festival, and you're like, okay.

Speaker 0

Well, these people are here just to go to the screening at the Lincoln Center.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's fun about it.

Speaker 1

There are also people who seem to come here just to be adjacent to the festival.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And so and by people, I mean, like companies.

Speaker 1

And also there are art exhibits, and there are parties, and there are, you know, pop ups and and all sorts of stuff.

Speaker 1

So it's I mean, it's a lot.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

But it's pretty great.

Speaker 0

I agree.

Speaker 0

We're very lucky to be able to go do this.

Speaker 0

So let's let's tell people about the movies because that's what they really wanna hear about.

Speaker 0

It's interesting how the amount of overlap that we have on our list, especially right at the top.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So you got the movie Inc.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And then I got the movie Inc.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

还有《Ink》。

And Inc.

Speaker 0

Is the new movie from Danny Boyle.

Speaker 0

It is a portrait of Larry Lamb, who is a was an enterprising Fleet Street British newspaper editor in the seventies and eighties.

Speaker 0

And he, thanks to the financial capital and encouragement of one Rupert Murdoch, helped to redefine journalism in England, and perhaps as the film makes a point 100,000 times over the course of two hours, change the very nature of our media and in interactive culture?

Speaker 1

It makes the point and also well, yes, it makes that point.

Speaker 1

And then also somehow doesn't totally land it, but that's okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So, you know, you and I both have this movie in the number five slot, which I find to be really interesting because we're both big Danny Boyle fans.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, we love twenty eight years later.

Speaker 0

We talked about why we have he you know, he hasn't been on the show before and, you know, like what his career means and all this.

Speaker 0

This is a movie that makes a ton of sense for him on paper, and I found it to be incredibly engaging and entertaining.

Speaker 0

It was, like, very energetic from the opening moments when when the sprint song hits and, you know, after this wonderful sequence between Jack O'Connell and Guy Pearce, who play Lamb and Murdoch at a dinner table, I was like, boom, we're in like a flying Danny Boyle movie.

Speaker 0

I was pumped.

Speaker 0

And I but I will say by the time we got to the end of the movie and some of the decisions that were made, I was like, sir, we know.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Like, we we do we do know.

Speaker 1

And also and there's one specific decision that you're talking about that I'm like, sir, this movie didn't earn that totally.

Speaker 1

I know you wanted it to, and I don't know whether that's the source material or whether the script were or it just pulled back a little bit.

Speaker 1

So I completely agree.

Speaker 1

I think it's good, not great.

Speaker 1

I think the review I gave to a friend of ours was I also used the word incredibly engaging, really loud music.

Speaker 1

Everyone looks handsome.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And I would like to say right now that it is not too late for Jack O'Connell to test for James Bond.

Speaker 1

It is not too late.

Speaker 1

This man wears a tux in the movie, and he can wear the tux.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I I have some complicated feelings about him right now.

Speaker 0

Because one, he's like he's a freight train as an actor.

Speaker 0

He is, like, so charismatic and locked in, but he's in a little bit of a dangerous area that I'll call the Nick Cage zone, where he's like really big all the time now.

Speaker 0

And there are very few moments of quiet reflection happening in any of his performances.

Speaker 0

And maybe that's the kind of film performances he wants to give.

Speaker 0

But, you know, this film, twenty eight Years Later, The Bone Temple, Sinners, Back to Black, Ferrari, like, these are the last few movies he's made, many of which are good movies or interesting, and his performances are good, but they are high octane, like Yeah.

Speaker 0

Mega performances, and he's he's on a precipice here.

Speaker 0

I'm not encouraging him to, like, make a Quiet Chamber piece or anything, but there were times when I was like, we this is really cranked hard.

Speaker 1

Well, the whole movie is cranked hard.

Speaker 0

确实。

It is.

Speaker 0

确实。

It is.
