Speaker 0

A lot of my friends that I grew up with were going to jail, or ended up dead, or shot in the streets.

Speaker 0

So I fell victim to doing illegal stuff.

Speaker 0

But it was the moment that we got armed robbed where I have a gun to my head now, and once I saw the barrel of that gun being pointed at me, that was the moment I noticed, okay, if I survive this, I'm going to become a comedian or die trying.

Speaker 1

Druski.

Speaker 0

My comedy comes from that place of healing, wanting to make our situation better at home.

Speaker 0

One time, I watched my brother get beat for wetting the bed.

Speaker 0

It was a lot.

Speaker 0

So I would always try to step in to try to be a coping mechanism for him.

Speaker 0

Maybe it's my mom.

Speaker 0

So I knew I was funny, I knew I was very entertaining, but it didn't hit me until college, and I started to figure out, okay, wow, all the people I look up to are all comedic legends, and I feel more connected to them than anything I've ever felt in my life.

Speaker 0

That is my purpose, so I left college.

Speaker 0

I went home.

Speaker 0

I wrote all these goals down on a sheet of paper.

Speaker 0

Now I'm locked in.

Speaker 0

I have no other option.

Speaker 0

I'm sitting here in a room, no mattress, my car gotten repossessed.

Speaker 0

I actually made that a content piece.

Speaker 0

But I feared nothing because I'm like, "I have nothing left."

Speaker 0

But I knew, I'm like, "I'm going to keep going.

Speaker 0

I'm going to continue to keep pursuing, making videos," boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

Speaker 0

And then the thing that changed my life was Drake calling for the "Laugh Now, Cry Later" music video.

Speaker 0

Everything shifted after that.

Speaker 1

Druski, I heard this crazy story that they accidentally sent you Jim Carrey's money.

Speaker 0

No, they sent an email showing how much he would be getting paid for that hour.

Speaker 1

People are saying it was in the region of .

Speaker 0

Insane.

Speaker 0

I hope he didn't see mine because that would've been a little bit embarrassing.

Speaker 1

And then in March, you did a skit, and it did hundreds of millions of views.

Speaker 1

And then it sounded like Trump did ask to sue you.

Speaker 0

I don't know if that's true.

Speaker 0

I'm not looking to get sued by nobody.

Speaker 0

I'm not looking for it.

Speaker 1

Who is he talking about?

Speaker 0

呃——

Uh-

Speaker 1

Guys, I've got a favor to ask before this episode begins.

And I would be hugely grateful if you could take a minute on the app you're listening to this on right now and hit that follow button.

Speaker 1

Thank you so, so, so much.

Speaker 1

Druski, I really believe that to understand somebody, somebody who is an anomaly, and you very much are an anomaly, you first have to sort of understand their earliest context.

Speaker 1

And I went through all of these old photos of you as a young boy-

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah

Speaker 1

... to try and build some of that context-

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure

Speaker 1

... in my own head.

Speaker 0

Sure, yeah.

Speaker 1

What is it that most people might not know about that earliest context that's most informative to sort of who you are today?

Speaker 1

What remains?

Speaker 0

I still literally feel like this little boy in all these pictures.

Speaker 0

I see these moments, and it reminds me of how free I was able to be as a kid, and I wanted to be so much.

Speaker 0

And my mom and my grandparents, they always supported me being just open and free and having this...

Speaker 0

What is that right there?

Speaker 1

That was your dad and your brother?

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

My dad and my brother right here, for sure.

Speaker 0

Even looking at these pictures, I had no idea around this time who I was going to become.

Speaker 0

This is dope.

Speaker 0

How did you get these pictures, by the way?

Speaker 0

Where did you find all this stuff?

Speaker 0

Did my mom send you these?

Speaker 1

I was looking through some of the videos that your parents recorded of you at that time.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

And you've got like...

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

It's hard.

Speaker 0

Now, do you have any more questions about-

Speaker 2

About your teacher and how you're doing in school?

Speaker 0

很好。

Great.

Speaker 0

Well, I was just doing some homework and- That's me in character right there.

Speaker 0

That's absolutely in character.

Speaker 0

So she would put on these camcorders to let me be free.

Speaker 0

So that was my outlet to be able to do these characters and be myself, you know?

Speaker 0

The dancing song.

Speaker 0

Let's do that.

Speaker 0

I have multiple videos.

Speaker 0

I know you probably got more.

Speaker 0

There's one of me in a diaper, like, rapping.

Speaker 0

That's another crazy one.

Speaker 1

I wasn't sure if this was last week or...

Speaker 0

That's my cousin, Bri.

Speaker 0

Oh, oh.

Speaker 0

Oh my God.

Speaker 1

Where did you come up with this boss?

Speaker 0

Nah, just ...

Speaker 0

That's the beginning of Coulda Been Records right there.

Speaker 0

Nah, those are the moments, we used to put on these performances for my family, and I'm just grateful that we were able to be ourselves, and I was able to be supported somewhere because you do get confused in these settings, sort of say.

Speaker 0

You look like you have something to say to that.

Speaker 1

I've interviewed a lot of comedians-

Speaker 1

... and one of the things that I tend to find is that comedy is some sort of tool.

Speaker 1

And when I spoke to Jimmy Carr or some of these other comedians that I've interviewed, they're always able to sort of understand, in that early context, how they were using that tool to often solve a problem that they had in that context.

Speaker 1

So I remember Jimmy saying to me, he goes, "You often think of comedians as being depressed."

Speaker 1

But actually, for him, it was a case of comedy was a way to help his mum, who was depressed.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

It was like how he saw her smile.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Was comedy for you at that age a tool?

Speaker 0

Very much so.

Speaker 0

And I speak about my dad because he was one of those tough guys to deal with around that time.

Speaker 0

He wanted us to figure it out early, and my dad was the lead person of pushing that narrative.

Speaker 0

My mom somewhat would do it, but she would always try to tell him, "Relax, he's still a kid."

Speaker 0

At the time, I'm eight, nine years old, and my dad's like, "What do you want to do?

Speaker 0

Figure it out.

Speaker 0

You're either going to go to jail- You find a craft or you're going to end up in a warehouse or something.

Speaker 0

You got to figure out whatever you're going to do, or you go to the military, get your ass blown off.

Speaker 0

And that was the only two options.

Speaker 1

He said get your ass-

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

So imagine me at eight, nine years old, those are my three options, is school, find a trade, or you go to military, get your ass blown off, because we're going back to war.

Speaker 0

He was always talking about, "We're going back to war, we're going back to war."

Speaker 0

And I'm like, "What the fuck?

Speaker 0

Are we going to war?"

Speaker 0

So early on, he pushed that he wanted me to figure it out, and he had great lessons, but his teaching skills was very tough and physical.

Speaker 0

He's old school.

Speaker 0

I'm sure you heard it before.

Speaker 0

He's very old school about his teachings and how he goes about doing it, so he has a short temper.

Speaker 0

He used to ask these rhetorical questions all the time of like, he'll be like, "Go get me a Phillips screwdriver."

Speaker 0

And I'll go get a regular screwdriver.

Speaker 0

He's like, "This is not a Phillips screwdriver."

Speaker 0

Bam, upside the head.

Speaker 0

Then my brother goes, he's like, "I want you to go get me a Phillips screwdriver."

Speaker 0

My brother goes and get a hammer or something, the dumbest shit, right?

Speaker 0

And he would come back and then bam, upside the head.

Speaker 0

So that was the immediate of teaching.

Speaker 0

It's not the best way of teaching.

Speaker 0

And from an early age, I learned that speaking to other people's fathers and parents, I learned that this is not a normal thing, and I didn't know that until we would go to neighborhood parties and stuff and maybe my dad would be like, "Oh, these are my boys right here," and reach out his hand, and we'll flinch like that because it became a normal thing for him to always lift up his hand if we said the wrong thing.

Speaker 0

So I wouldn't say that my comedy necessarily came from that, but it definitely came from a healing, wanting to make our situation better at home.

Speaker 0

We don't come from a broke home.

Speaker 0

I ain't going to say we wasn't a broken, we were a broken home, we weren't a broke home.

Speaker 0

My dad was an airline pilot for United Airlines for entirely my whole younger life.

Speaker 0

My mom worked for the CDC.

Speaker 0

Very two good jobs.

Speaker 0

My mom was always home.

Speaker 0

My dad would travel in and out.

Speaker 0

But I think what I wanted to do in my personality as a kid was always to make the family smile, no matter through all this stuff that we're going through and these teachings being too far sometimes, or maybe this ass whooping was too much.

Speaker 0

The ass whooping went too far because I'm not going to get into details on here, but we had some ass whoopings in the house that went too far.

Speaker 0

But yeah, I feel like my comedy comes from that place of, I never tend to punch down.

Speaker 0

I like to find the funny, but also the good side of funny and not look at the negative for my type of comedy.

Speaker 0

I can find a negative situation and bring the funny out of it for both sides, me and the other person.

Speaker 1

So I guess-

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure

Speaker 1

... as a child-

Speaker 1

... very perceptive children, you're on edge a little bit then.

Speaker 0

没错。

For sure.

Speaker 1

And it's funny because I remember sitting with Gabel Matin and him telling me how kids that have an early context where they have to be a little bit more aware-

Speaker 1

... they often become very good at observation.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And they become good therapists.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

They become the most empathetic.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

They also sometimes have struggles with mental health because being hypervigilant or being aware comes at a cost.

Speaker 1

It's not free.

Speaker 1

For all the upsides, there's always a downside.

Speaker 1

Does any of that resonate?

Speaker 0

1,000%, man.

Speaker 0

And I think, sadly, in my brother's case, that went a negative direction.

Speaker 0

He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as we continued to go through puberty and got older, whereas for me, I feel like I might have found a coping mechanism with comedy, and maybe he never found that coping mechanism from that trauma.

Speaker 0

And I feel like trauma can sometimes give you the good route or the negative route, and I feel like a lot of that going on in our house early on may have played a role in him being diagnosed with that.

Speaker 0

And yeah, that's the sad side of the story.

Speaker 0

But yeah, even with him, I think early on, I would always try to make him laugh because I knew we were in a fucked up situation.

Speaker 0

One time, I watched my brother get beat for wetting the bed, and it was the simplest thing, and I couldn't understand.

Speaker 0

I was like, "Why is he getting beat this bad?"

Speaker 0

It was very far, very not the normal belt type thing.

Speaker 0

It was very far.

Speaker 0

So I would always try to step in either after or during these moments to try to be a coping mechanism for him or maybe it's my mom, and he's arguing with her, and they're getting physical as well.

Speaker 0

So I would always try to be the funny guy maybe at the dinner after, or maybe after the next day goes by and I'm trying to lift everybody's vibe up.

Speaker 1

So you watched your mother get hit as well?

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 0

Not physically hit, but I've seen different things of the choking and pushing her out the door and then locking the door, and then I got to go and be the one staring at her at the door, and she's like, "Open it."

Speaker 0

And he's like, "You better not open that door."

Speaker 0

And I'm in between a rock and a hard place trying to figure out, do I open this door for my mom or is he going to come?

Speaker 0

So it was a lot of different situations of trying to figure it out at a very young age, and it started so young that some things are kind of blurred for me.

Speaker 0

But I do know that my comedy comes from that comforting type of space I can read a room and sense any type of danger.

Speaker 0

I can read a room and sense any type of happiness, sadness, anything, in any situation.

Speaker 0

Somebody can be mentally ill, somebody can be physically hurt, somebody can be anything, and I always have been a good judge of character as well.

Speaker 0

So I feel like that has helped me in my career for sure.

Speaker 1

There's two things I wanted to add to that.

Speaker 1

Part of the reason I noticed this, obviously I've sat here 700 times or something doing these interviews.

Speaker 0

1000%, yeah.

Speaker 1

And you're one of the first people to stop mid-conversation as you were speaking-

Speaker 1

... and say, "You look like you had something to say there, Steve."

Speaker 1

Because you were looking at my face.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I can read.

Speaker 1

People don't usually do that.

Speaker 1

So it's funny because I meet some people who are much more aware of me.

Speaker 1

Some people they're just talking, and they're giving their answers to my questions, and then there's this other-

Speaker 0

确实。

For sure

Speaker 1

... very rare group of people, often comedians, who I almost feel like I'm speaking to them even when I'm just sat here thinking.

Speaker 1

Because they're hyper-aware in that sense.

Speaker 0

确实。

For sure.

Speaker 1

And you just did that to me, so I thought-

Speaker 1

... oh, he is super aware.

Speaker 1

Which kind of correlates to everything you were saying then.

Speaker 0

确实。

For sure.

Speaker 1

But it always comes at a cost.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

I agree.

Speaker 1

All gifts do.

Speaker 1

I sat with, I think it was Michael Jordan's trainer-

Speaker 1

... who also then trained Kobe, and he said to me, he goes, "Our dark sides are linked to our light sides."

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

So the things people clap for are inherently linked to the things that we then struggle with.

Speaker 1

That's true for yourself, I'm presuming?

Speaker 0

Very true, and I think through life, I've learned that not all teachers have the best way of teaching, which when I speak on his lessons.

Speaker 0

他有——

He had-

Speaker 0

... many of lessons that were really good and on the positive side of life where I had to eventually come to sources and just tell myself, like, "Wow, I cannot look for more success and look for the light at the end of the tunnel without forgiving any and everything in my past."

Speaker 0

And that came with having to forgive my father in my head and also to him face-to-face of like, we just let it all go.

Speaker 0

And I think that helped me continue to move forward and not have any grudges.

Speaker 0

Grudges can really hold a lot of weight on you.

Speaker 0

Maybe his mother was abusive to him, or his upbringing was in a different type of area in the world where it's like Northeast DC, very trauma neighborhood that's very a negative place to grow up in, and he's from the project buildings of that.

Speaker 0

But yeah, I think the lessons he had were very good.

Speaker 0

He always talked about not half-assing anything.

Speaker 0

If you're going to do something, do it all the way.

Speaker 0

If you're going to mop the floor, don't just do this side of it, do it like this.

Speaker 0

If you're going to clean the dishes, do all the dishes.

Speaker 0

Don't half-ass rinse it and then put it in there.

Speaker 0

But his lessons would be over the top.

Speaker 0

He's going to break the dishes if you do it.

Speaker 0

He's going to throw it up in the air and watch it crash on the ground, and then he's yelling to the highest he could yell, and it used to be a lot.

Speaker 0

And I think it almost like, people talk about you like, how can I be broken if I've already been broken at an early age?

Speaker 0

And I kind of feel that way.

Speaker 0

People be like, "Oh, it's not too much of a burden on you and your career.

Speaker 0

This is not too much."

Speaker 0

And I'm like, how could I be broken if I feel like I've already gone to my furthest extent?

Speaker 0

I can only continue to push myself to higher levels because I feel like I've gone through everything that could be the worst possible situation, at least in my brain.

Speaker 0

But yeah, he had very good lessons and always had quotes and sayings on things.

Speaker 0

I actually have to bring it up.

Speaker 0

But it's confusing because at an early age, I had no idea, oh, okay, it only takes one, "Whoa, shit, I really fucked this up," to negate 10 attaboys.

Speaker 0

I have no idea.

Speaker 0

Still to this day, I get confused.

Speaker 0

But I understood.

Speaker 0

Let me tell you when I understood that.

Speaker 0

I understood that as life went on, and I started to notice a lot of my friends that I grew up with in the area I grew up in were going to jail or falsely being accused of things or ended up being dead or shot in the streets.

Speaker 0

And we've seen a lot of that stuff because I come from a neighborhood where it's the suburb, but it also had a mixture of the real Atlanta in there as well.

Speaker 0

But yeah, so these things were very confusing to me early on.

Speaker 0

But as I continued to grow in life, every single lesson that he had taught me and that he had told and talked about and constantly over again spoke on, it started to come back to me in my later years of life, and I began to grow an appreciation for it after I forgave him for all these past trauma situations and everything that happened.

Speaker 0

是的。

But yeah.

Speaker 1

And when you say forgive, do you have a good relationship with him now?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Very good.

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 0

Yeah, and I think in anything in life, you have to move on from things and continue to push.

Speaker 0

I think you can never grow to do great things without looking back and being like, "Okay, I have to close the door on this.

Speaker 0

I cannot hold this grudge."

Speaker 0

Because if you hold a grudge, you got to think about what a grudge is.

Speaker 0

A grudge is on you as a burden.

Speaker 0

That's a burden to everything.

Speaker 0

It's not just physical.

Speaker 0

It's a mental thing that can really rot people's brain out.

Speaker 0

It's a thing.

Speaker 0

But I'm sure you probably you know.

Speaker 1

Of course, yeah.

Speaker 1

But a lot of people think of forgiveness as letting them win or-

Speaker 1

... justification or-

Speaker 0

Or they feel like a loser because, oh, I'm not going to forgive them for that, I'm going to hold that grudge to the death.

Speaker 0

It's like, yo, you're not helping yourself.

Speaker 0

That's actually a you thing.

Speaker 0

That has nothing to do with them or what they did.

Speaker 0

If you hold onto that, that's a forever thing for you.

Speaker 1

And one of the things it will give you is great resilience, I imagine.

Speaker 1

You talked about it there.

Speaker 1

You said, "How can anything break me when I've already been broken to the fullest extent?"

Speaker 1

Again, with that comes a set of issues you contend with as an adult.

Speaker 1

I experienced it myself, which is, if my parents were quite, there wasn't a lot of love between them.

Speaker 1

So one of the lessons I inherited was that relationships look like this And this isn't necessarily a great thing that I want.

Speaker 1

So I swerved relationships at every opportunity I was presented.

Speaker 1

I'd pursue people, and then the minute they turned to me and said, "Do you want to be in a relationship?"

Speaker 1

我就——

I was like-

Speaker 0

Nah, it's too much

Speaker 1

我就——

I was like-

Speaker 0

It's too much.

Speaker 0

I've seen this before.

Speaker 0

I'm getting away from this.

Speaker 0

Nah, I know where this goes.

Speaker 0

I know what you mean.

Speaker 0

I deal with that as well, for sure.

Speaker 0

I know exactly what you mean.

Speaker 1

You've experienced that yourself as well?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

I feel like I continuously have grown a relationship with women in a way where I feel like I almost get scared with getting too close, kind of like how you explained, because of maybe I haven't seen the successful home of two parents or-

Speaker 1

Like a model

Speaker 0

... two people in a relationship.

Speaker 0

Maybe I haven't seen it with my own two eyes to work, and I feel like that kind of does hinder me a little bit because it does come in between when I feel these feelings for this girl, and I almost jump back immediately as soon as I'm like, "Nah, nah, nah, I don't trust it because I know what this comes with."

Speaker 0

And they're like, "Yo, what do you mean?

Speaker 0

We didn't even get a chance to fully..."

Speaker 0

And I don't know.

Speaker 0

It's a natural mind thing that happens to me.

Speaker 0

And I still, to this day, I have no idea.

Speaker 0

If you want to be my doctor for this-

Speaker 1

No, no, I just-

Speaker 0

Go ahead

Speaker 1

……

...

Speaker 1

I'm just hypothesizing

Speaker 0

But I have no idea why.

Speaker 0

I feel like that has something to do with it.

Speaker 0

Maybe I haven't seen it in a way that's healthy, and that might be the reason why.

Speaker 0

But I still, that's a question that I need answered.

Speaker 1

If I spoke to someone that you were in a relationship with and I said to them, "Is Drew affectionate?"

Speaker 0

You're laughing.

Speaker 0

You know the answer, you just don't want to say.

Speaker 0

No, no, no. I feel like they would tell you that I am until I'm not, and I basically just-

Speaker 1

直到

Until

Speaker 0

……

...

Speaker 0

I just pull out.

Speaker 0

I pull back.

Speaker 0

I almost feel once I get too close, I can't trust it.

Speaker 0

It's almost like a magnet when you reverse it on the other side.

Speaker 0

It's like when it comes too close, it starts to repel itself.

Speaker 0

That's how I feel when it comes to me getting more and more closer with a female.

Speaker 1

That makes sense.

Speaker 1

I think that's what I experienced up until I was about 27 years old.

Speaker 0

确实。

Sure.

Speaker 1

然后——

And-

Speaker 0

But I'm 31, still experiencing.

Speaker 1

It ain't that far off.

Speaker 0

I've got to find a wife.

Speaker 0

I have to find a wife.

Speaker 0

You have to find a wife.

Speaker 0

No, it'll happen.

Speaker 0

It'll happen.

Speaker 1

Does it matter increasingly as you become more successful to you?

Speaker 1

Do you think more about it and as you go further?

Speaker 0

Yeah, it's hard to trust after you become...

Speaker 0

I think when you're kind of successful at the beginning, it's not hard to trust.

Speaker 0

You're just like, "Yo, she likes me for me, but also she can still like me for this celebrity I am."

Speaker 0

And it's kind of 50/50.

Speaker 0

But as you become more and more successful, you have this doubt in your mind, like this could absolutely be her in love with just Druski and not Drew at all.

Speaker 1

Is that just a convenient excuse for the whole avoidant-

Speaker 0

No. No, no. I'm serious.

Speaker 0

I promise.

Speaker 0

It's a question in every superstar's mind, I guarantee you.

Speaker 0

Even when they are with somebody fully, they still have a question in the back of their mind, does this person just love the superstar of me?

Speaker 1

That's so interesting.

Speaker 0

And it does bother somebody who is super successful because you see all these people will scream and chase you, and you have a show or maybe a meet and greet, and you see how people react to you, or you go on the street, and you want to believe that this person that you're dating also is genuine, like how these fans are.

Speaker 0

Like, "Yo, okay, maybe she just loves me for me.

Speaker 0

Maybe this is not kind of like how the fans just love me for that."

Speaker 0

You want her to believe that this is the same type of real thing.

Speaker 0

But it's hard to believe after you see all of this stuff, you only know me for that.

Speaker 0

You didn't meet me when I was just at home, living with my mom, broke on the sofa.

Speaker 0

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker 0

You didn't see the real side of who I actually am.

Speaker 0

If you get what I'm saying.

Speaker 1

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 0

You see the new personality-

Speaker 0

... so to say.

Speaker 0

It's tough.

Speaker 0

It's tough out here, man.

Speaker 0

Could've been love.

Speaker 1

Could've been love.

Speaker 0

Could've been love.

Speaker 0

靠。

Fuck.

Speaker 1

So you go off to college.

Speaker 1

And you last, was it two semesters before you dropped out?

Speaker 0

No, I started at a school that was in Gwinnett County, where I grew up.

Speaker 0

So I spent like a year and then another half of a semester there, and I got enough credits to transfer.

Speaker 0

Because I was like, "Okay, I've got to get out of here.

Speaker 0

I know my life is bigger than this."

Speaker 0

And also, at the time, I wasn't thinking, "Oh, I want to be a superstar."

Speaker 0

I was just thinking I wanted a real college experience.

Speaker 0

I wanted to go to a four-year college.

Speaker 0

I didn't have the grades to do it in high school and go straight there.

Speaker 0

I want to find a way to do it in college.

Speaker 0

So I think when I went to Georgia Southern as the school following that, I just wanted to find the college ecosystem of like, what's the vibe here?

Speaker 0

Oh, let's party.

Speaker 0

Let's do this.

Speaker 0

And I didn't find that as soon as I got there.

Speaker 0

It's almost like I didn't get the immediate this is college like I thought I would get after I got there.

Speaker 0

And I went into a deep depression because I had two guys that I knew went to the school from, like you know somebody from your county, of course.

Speaker 0

And I was like, "Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

I'll link up with him.

Speaker 0

He'll be a great friend to be along with on this ride of whatever this new school is."

Speaker 0

And I would try to link up with them, and for some reason, it always was a hassle for me to link up with them.

Speaker 0

They always would be like, "Oh, we always got to pick you up.

Speaker 0

You don't have a car."

Speaker 0

And I'm like, "No, I'll get an Uber to y'all."

Speaker 0

"Well, if you don't have any money to get into the game, there's no point in coming because we can't pay for you."

Speaker 0

Or, "I want to come to the party with y'all."

Speaker 0

"Oh, well, you have the same shoes that you hoop in.

Speaker 0

Why would we bring you?"

Speaker 0

They would always have jokes about, maybe I felt like I wasn't deserving enough to be around them, so to say.

Speaker 0

And I felt almost, for the first time in my life, very depressed.

Speaker 0

And that kind of bothered me because I started to just not even go to classes anymore at this new school.

Speaker 0

I was just staying in my dorm room.

Speaker 0

So I went to not even going to class anymore.

Speaker 0

I stopped going to classes for the whole second semester of being at that school, no classes.

Speaker 0

Sat in my room and would just sit and think.

Speaker 0

I'm calling my friends back at home.

Speaker 0

They're not doing nothing, so I kind of didn't want to go home because I'm like, "Damn, they're not doing shit.

Speaker 0

I'm not going to go back."

Speaker 0

But also, what am I doing here?

Speaker 0

I'm not doing anything here either.

Speaker 0

What is my purpose in life?

Speaker 0

So sitting in there and being depressed and sad and looking at myself in the mirror, I started to figure out, I'm like, "Damn, what do I really want to do in life?

Speaker 0

Does any of this really make sense?"

Speaker 0

I'm here for sports journalism, but I know I want to be on TV.

Speaker 0

I took sports journalism to be maybe an ESPN sportscast, just to get my face on TV.

Speaker 0

I didn't know.

Speaker 0

I was like, "Maybe I want to do that.

Speaker 0

It sounds cool."

Speaker 0

But as I continued to do more, I guess, soul searching, so to say, just sitting in the room and thinking about what I want to do.

Speaker 0

I would sit and watch Steve Harvey interviews on what is it do you want to do in your life?

Speaker 0

Jump off a mountaintop and take a risk.

Speaker 0

And I would watch all these videos of everything, of people I looked up to, Kevin Hart, and I started to figure out, I was like, "Okay, what's my purpose?

Speaker 0

These are the people I look up to, but what exactly do I want to do?"

Speaker 0

And as I continued to do more searching, I started to figure out, okay, wow, I think all the people I look up to are all comedic legends.

Speaker 0

I'm watching Will Ferrell stuff, Chris Farley.

Speaker 0

These are guys that I find as my heroes.

Speaker 0

I think since I've always been the funny guy in every classroom, everything I've done, sports, I get kicked off the football team for being funny.

Speaker 0

All this stuff is because I am a comedian.

Speaker 0

And it was almost like I felt like an idiot because I'm like, "Damn, I'm sitting over here in college.

Speaker 0

That is my purpose.

Speaker 0

This is it."

Speaker 0

I feel more connected to them than I've ever felt to anything I've ever felt in my life.

Speaker 1

Why?

Speaker 0

The things they would say in a Kevin Hart interview, the things he would say in a Steve Harvey interview, the things Will Ferrell would say, or Chris Farley would say, or Jim Carrey, I felt more attached to it because they also felt a need and a purpose to become a hero of comedy.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

It sounds dumb because when you tell your parents, "Oh, I want to be a comedian," they're like, "Oh, you're basically a clown, I guess.

Speaker 0

And you'll go start doing stand-up rooms and maybe you make it, maybe you don't."

Speaker 0

It sounds kind of silly telling people or your hometown friends, "Oh, I'm going to be a comedian."

Speaker 0

But as I continued to do more and more research on everything I wanted to do, I started to figure out, okay, this is my purpose.

Speaker 0

And it always has been.

Speaker 0

And I see these videos of me as a kid.

Speaker 0

I'm remembering memories of all this stuff early on.

Speaker 0

This is it.

Speaker 0

And that's when I just had, I don't know what they would call it, like epiphany .

Speaker 0

But yeah, that was a big change for me in my career.

Speaker 0

Well, not even my career, at the beginning processes.

Speaker 1

When you say, "I was depressed," that word can mean lots of things to lots of people.

Speaker 0

确实。

For sure.

Speaker 1

What does it mean in your definition in that moment of your life?

Speaker 1

If I was a fly on the wall or just in the room, but also if I was inside your head at that time, what would I hear and what would I see if I was a fly on the wall?

Speaker 0

I think you would just see me in there confused, man.

Speaker 0

I would sit in my room for hours.

Speaker 0

I would sit there and play 2K.

Speaker 0

I would sit there and play music for hours.

Speaker 0

I wasn't really doing anything.

Speaker 0

I had no friends at that school.

Speaker 0

I would walk to the corner store.

Speaker 0

My mom will send me $20.

Speaker 0

I'll buy as much as I could get to be able to stay in the room and not go out and socialize with all these people at this huge school.

Speaker 0

I would get as much food as I could get at the time to go back and just be in the room.

Speaker 0

And that's when I knew.

Speaker 0

I was like, "Yo, I'm really in a state I've never been in in my life."

Speaker 0

Imagine, I'm used to being out of high school where I was known as the class clown.

Speaker 0

Anybody in my family knows me to be the guy that brings the warmth to the room and to make everybody laugh, and he's always bringing good energy.

Speaker 0

To now I'm sitting here almost hiding away from society and very dark on myself.

Speaker 0

I'm very hard on myself about everything that I want to do.

Speaker 0

It took a while for me to understand what it was.

Speaker 0

I think me going on YouTube and trying to research successful people, I started to line up the people that I found inspiring, and every single one of them were all comedians.

Speaker 0

I felt more attached to every single one of them than I've ever felt attached to anybody else in my life.

Speaker 1

It's funny because through your childhood, you're a comedian.

Speaker 1

Clearly, from all the videos that I've seen.

Speaker 1

And people think of comedians as giving.

Speaker 1

You make us laugh.

Speaker 1

But obviously, you get something from that, too.

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 1

And then suddenly you're in this room, and you're no longer getting that thing.

Speaker 1

Whatever it is.

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 1

What is that thing?

Speaker 0

I knew that was a thing early on when I was a kid.

Speaker 0

I would have these conversations with myself at home after elementary of, "Did I make the class laugh today?"

Speaker 0

And why does that feel so good to me to brag about?

Speaker 0

Or I would ask other students, "Who's the funniest to you in this class?"

Speaker 0

Or, "Who's the funniest in our grade?"

Speaker 0

And I would really ask them.

Speaker 0

I was like, "Why do you feel like he's funny?

Speaker 0

Why is Mikey funnier than me?

Speaker 0

Tell me why."

Speaker 0

And it was almost like a competition in my head that nobody knew about, but it was in me, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker 0

I felt like it meant something if they told me, "Oh, of course, you're the funniest guy in our grade, duh."

Speaker 1

And how would that make you feel?

Speaker 0

That made me feel successful.

Speaker 0

It felt like I won the Mark Twain Award of the school.

Speaker 0

That is the Oscar for me at a young age if somebody to be, "Oh, my God, you're the funniest at this school."

Speaker 1

I think it's interesting often that-

Speaker 1

... your nature was clearly you're a comedian, but-

Speaker 1

... that's not a career that kids are taught about.

Speaker 1

They're taught about, like you said, like your dad said, like, "Go get your ass blown off," and all these other things.

Speaker 1

But they'd-

Speaker 0

Find a trade.

Speaker 1

Find a trade, yeah.

Speaker 1

But until you're given a word for it, sometimes you don't have that epiphany.

Speaker 1

I thought that about being an entrepreneur.

Speaker 1

I didn't know it was a thing until I was 19, and I was already doing it.

Speaker 1

And then I heard the word, and someone gave it meaning, and was like, "Oh, that's a thing you can do as a job?"

Speaker 1

And then suddenly, mind expansion.

Speaker 0

You know what it was?

Speaker 0

I always knew that comedy was a thing.

Speaker 0

I didn't know that I wanted to do it as bad as I was doing it.

Speaker 0

I was always watching it.

Speaker 0

I always watched.

Speaker 0

My mom would show us "In Living Color," movies like "What About Bob?"

Speaker 0

early on.

Speaker 0

My dad would always have the "Chappelle's Show" on, and I would try to sneak and watch that because that was very much rated R. In the kids' mind, they'd be like, "Oh, you can't watch this stuff.

Speaker 0

Get upstairs."

Speaker 0

And I would still try to sneak behind the stairs and look like, "Oh, my God, that's so funny."

Speaker 0

And I would try to say these jokes back at school that I hear Dave Chappelle saying, or Blankman.

Speaker 0

He was like a guy in a wheelchair from "In Living Color" that ended up becoming a movie, and they made this whole thing called Blank.

Speaker 0

But the fact of the matter is that it was always in front of me, and I always was a big fan of comedy.

Speaker 0

I just didn't know that my mom sort of say was influenced.

Speaker 0

And I say my mom because she would always put this stuff in front of us because she wanted the best for us, but she was almost like the seesaw to level everything out.

Speaker 0

If something bad happens with my dad, my mom was always there to level it out.

Speaker 0

She was the one that would come in and tell him, like, "David, that's too much."

Speaker 0

And sometimes he would bark at her and be like, "Get the fuck out of here.

Speaker 0

These boys are going to end up being men.

Speaker 0

They need to learn this now."

Speaker 0

But she always had quotes or good things she would always say, like, "Just continue to believe in yourself.

Speaker 0

Continue to know this."

Speaker 0

So, my mom was always a big believer in anything becoming big.

Speaker 0

Yeah, so I got to give her a lot for that.

Speaker 1

You'd think the former president of Nespresso would be a pretty hard person to convert to a new coffee company.

Speaker 1

But just one sip of Cometeer coffee made him invest.

Speaker 1

But let me tell you the reason why I became an investor.

Speaker 1

So, I had a big box of this arrive on my desk in the London office, and then I'd say within about an hour and a half, the Slack channel that we have starts blowing up with people asking, "What the hell is that thing that's been left in the kitchen?

Speaker 1

It is unbelievable."

Speaker 1

So, instead of trying to make it yourself at home and balance the flavors, they flash freeze it at the perfect moment.

Speaker 1

So, all you have to do is pop it out of here, into a cup, pour hot water on it, and it tastes like nothing you've tasted before.

Speaker 1

You can also make delicious iced coffee drinks as well.

Speaker 1

Just pour it in.

Speaker 1

No machine, no brewing with plastic and all that nasty stuff.

Speaker 1

而且今天在cometeer.com/stephen下单,首单可以立减30美元。

And you can get $30 off your first order at cometeer.com/stephen today.

Speaker 1

网址是cometeer.com/stephen。

That's cometeer.com/stephen.

Speaker 1

I went to lunch with a very successful founder.

Speaker 1

He told me about this vision where in the future your mattress will be able to check your entire body.

Speaker 1

He is the founder of a brand called Eight Sleep, and it's a brand that has quite frankly changed my life.

Speaker 1

Me and my fiancée, Melanie, we have very different sleeping habits.

Speaker 1

She likes the bed to be a little bit colder.

Speaker 1

I like it to be a little bit hotter, and so that often causes a little bit of an argument until we discovered Eight Sleep.

Speaker 1

Eight Sleep Pod 6

The Eight Sleep Pod 6 is this mattress cover that sits on top of your mattress, and it regulates your entire bed while you sleep.

Speaker 1

So, my fiancée, Mel, can have it as cold as she wants on her side, and it knows that I have a different preference on my side.

Speaker 1

If Mel's getting up earlier, her side can wake her up by sort of slowly vibrating and heating up so that she wakes up while I stay asleep.

Speaker 1

And Pod 6 now delivers temperature relief 20% faster than the previous Pod with a 50% smaller hub.

Speaker 1

And I spoke to Matteo, the founder, and he has given me a code to give to you now that he sponsors this podcast, which will allow you to get up to $200 off the new Pod 6.

Speaker 1

用我的代码Stephen,去eightsleep.com/stephen。

Use my code Stephen at eightsleep.com/stephen.

Speaker 1

You'll get 30 days to try it, and if you don't like it, you can return it.

Speaker 1

But I'm confident that you will.

Speaker 1

So you went off to university.

Speaker 1

You discovered these great comedians.

Speaker 1

You discovered, you said Steve Harvey, who's, I think he's 69 years old now.

Speaker 1

He's an American comedian and TV host, stand-up comic as well.

Speaker 1

然后——

And so-

Speaker 0

One of the kings of comedy.

Speaker 1

One of your idols in comedy?

Speaker 0

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 0

Hell yeah.

Speaker 1

What was it that he said in particular that you recall that really sort of pushed you forward in that moment?

Speaker 0

I remember he had a video that talked about just taking a risk and just jumping, and he spoke on just take the leap of faith and just jump.

Speaker 0

Stop overthinking everything.

Speaker 0

Nothing happens without taking this risk.

Speaker 0

And I knew he continued to say something in these videos of, if you believe there's something more to your life, there is If you have that vision that keeps popping up in your head, that means that very much so is in your life.

Speaker 0

And I just kept hearing him say that, and I played the video back.

Speaker 0

Played the video back again.

Speaker 0

Played the video back.

Speaker 0

I'm like, "Damn, what the hell?"

Speaker 0

Because I kept feeling that feeling.

Speaker 0

I'm like, "There's more to my life than what it is right now," and I knew it.

Speaker 0

In the back of my head, I was like, "I know it, I know it, I know it.

Speaker 0

There's more to this than what I feel."

Speaker 0

It's in the back of my-- And that's what resonated with me from the video that I watched on him.

Speaker 0

It was life-changing.

Speaker 1

I spoke to Steve.

Speaker 0

Oh, man.

Speaker 0

What are you about to show me, man?

Speaker 1

He wanted to send you a little video message as well.

Speaker 2

Hey, what's happening, Druski?

Speaker 2

Hey, look, man, I heard they was doing something for you, so I wanted to jump on here, man, and just give you some big ups, man, let you know, man, I've been watching you for a while-

Speaker 0

哇

Wow

Speaker 2

... from a distance, man.

Speaker 2

We've only spoken once, but look, man, I think you're special.

Speaker 2

You got a gift, man.

Speaker 2

You're really, really special.

Speaker 2

And with that specialness, man, comes some responsibility.

Speaker 2

And so just be careful, man.

Speaker 2

Remember everything your mom and your grandmomma told you, because you're going to need all of that.

Speaker 2

Because you're killing the game, and once you start killing the game, it's like chess, man.

Speaker 2

We're out here playing chess.

Speaker 2

The object is to kill the king.

Speaker 2

Sad, but true.

Speaker 2

Keep your faith, brother.

Speaker 2

Stay funny, man.

Speaker 2

If you need me, call Unc.

Speaker 2

I got you.

Speaker 0

Yo, this is crazy.

Speaker 0

That is nuts, bro.

Speaker 0

That is amazing, man.

Speaker 0

And that really is a full circle moment, even hearing him say that, and wow, man.

Speaker 0

Somebody that definitely I looked up to.

Speaker 0

Him amongst the other kings of comedy as well is like...

Speaker 0

Wow, man.

Speaker 0

That's deep.

Speaker 0

That's deep.

Speaker 1

What happens from there?

Speaker 1

You go from being in that room, you're watching these Steve Harvey videos.

Speaker 1

Presumably, you've got to call your mom, and you've got to tell your mom that you're dropping out.

Speaker 0

She wasn't happy about that.

Speaker 0

I remember she cried, and she hung up on me, and she was like, "This is just so dumb."

Speaker 0

Like, "What are you talking about?"

Speaker 1

What did you say to her?

Speaker 0

I couldn't get any words out.

Speaker 0

She hung up.

Speaker 0

But I remember seeing her crying on the FaceTime after.

Speaker 0

I just wanted to tell her what my vision was on-- Because you say, "I'm dropping out," but then, of course, you have a rebuttal.

Speaker 0

"I have a great idea."

Speaker 0

And she hung up immediately.

Speaker 0

So then I called my friend.

Speaker 0

He came and grabbed me from the school in the middle of the night.

Speaker 0

I was four hours away from Atlanta, Georgia.

Speaker 0

I'm deep down in southern Georgia.

Speaker 0

And we drove all the way back.

Speaker 0

And when I got there, of course, she let me in the house, and I think it was just a confusing time because I'm also not making any money, so she's like, "Now what?

Speaker 0

Now what are you going to do?"

Speaker 0

And I had this big plan, and I told her what I was going to do.

Speaker 0

I'm like, "I'm going to be a comedian.

Speaker 0

I'm going to be on TV.

Speaker 0

I promise you, in a year, I'm going to make sure I'm on TV.

Speaker 0

And if I'm not," I told her this wild story, "I'm going to kill myself."

Speaker 0

I said, "If I don't become a comedian, and I don't become a famous comedian on TV, I'm going to kill myself."

Speaker 0

And she's like, "Don't say stuff like that.

Speaker 0

That is so dumb.

Speaker 0

I want you to go hard for whatever you're doing, but that is just-- Why do you feel like it has to be comedy?"

Speaker 0

And I was like, "This is something that..."

Speaker 0

And I continued to break down everything.

Speaker 0

I'm like, "This is what I've always wanted to be."

Speaker 0

It's almost like you have this great idea, but nobody sees the vision.

Speaker 0

So then I went to my grandparents.

Speaker 0

I told them the same vision that I had.

Speaker 0

They lived down the street from her, and they're like, "What are you talking about?

Speaker 0

Go back to school, get your education, and then you do all that other stuff."

Speaker 0

Because they had the old school mindset of, they've probably seen people that didn't go to school, and they've seen people that did go to school.

Speaker 0

People that did go to school, get a job.

Speaker 0

People that didn't go to school became maybe crackheads in their era.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

Or became failures in life.

Speaker 0

So they never really saw the good side of what is.

Speaker 0

And I was like, the 0.1 of people, maybe even less than 0.1% of people that are able to accomplish that after dropping out is very unlikely.

Speaker 0

So immediately, when I told my grandparents, they were like, "Oh, no." They said, "We know what's going to happen.

Speaker 0

You're going to drop out.

Speaker 0

You're going to be calling us, asking for money.

Speaker 0

Don't be calling our house and pulling up, and you're going to be doing drugs."

Speaker 0

And I'm like, "Guys, listen, I'm not going to be doing that."

Speaker 0

They're like, "No."

Speaker 0

You know your grandparents.

Speaker 0

Black grandparents, they don't give a shit.

Speaker 0

They're like, "Don't be coming over here and bothering us.

Speaker 0

We know what's about to happen, you're going to be a crackhead."

Speaker 0

And I'm like, "Listen, guys, I have a plan."

Speaker 0

And essentially, I didn't do it immediately.

Speaker 0

I started trying to work at Red Lobster, and then I worked at a LongHorn's, and I worked at Outback Steakhouse and McDonald's.

Speaker 0

I started to work jobs because it was a quick money thing.

Speaker 0

And then I fell victim to living in Atlanta, where I was doing illegal stuff.

Speaker 0

And now I'm seeing myself go into this whirlwind of, "Damn, I came home to do this?"

Speaker 1

Drug dealing.

Speaker 0

No, not drug dealing.

Speaker 1

You said illegal stuff.

Speaker 0

I love how you said... No, in Atlanta, it's like a scamming circle of where a lot of people fall victim to.

Speaker 0

It's like you can do quick, easy scams with banks or doing card scams, just stuff like that.

Speaker 0

And I never was a bad guy, I felt like that was an easier way to do it while I'm trying to pursue this stuff.

Speaker 0

But I felt like the karma of this stuff was weighing on me.

Speaker 0

It's like, "Oh, I'm going to try to pursue comedy while doing this," and it never worked out.

Speaker 0

I didn't even pursue it.

Speaker 0

I just was-

Speaker 1

Flirting with it

Speaker 0

……

...

Speaker 0

I was going back and forth.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I just continued to flirt back and forth with the idea of it.

Speaker 0

And then it was the moment that we got arm robbed Where I had an out-of-body feeling of wow, I came home to be in this predicament where I have a gun to my head now, and now it's like how did I even get here?

Speaker 0

So let me rewind back.

Speaker 0

That was the last moment I said, "Okay, if I'm going to do anything, I'm going to become a comedian or die trying."

Speaker 0

That's it.

Speaker 0

I have no other outlet.

Speaker 0

Once I saw the barrel of that gun being pointed at me and my friend, at the time it was a bad scamming situation gone left.

Speaker 0

That was the moment I noticed, okay, if I survive this, I am going to turn my life around, and I'm not going to go to a job.

Speaker 0

I'm not going to go back to my mom's house and try to say, oh, I'm doing this or that.

Speaker 0

I'm going to lock in, actually do it.

Speaker 0

And from there on, I went home.

Speaker 0

I wrote all these goals down on a sheet of paper.

Speaker 0

And my mom, she was kind of in the mix of what happened a little bit, too.

Speaker 0

She had heard because she saw me walking around the house being stressed out.

Speaker 0

I told her what's going on.

Speaker 0

And I wrote down all these goals because she would always say, "You can't do anything without writing things down."

Speaker 0

Ever since I was a kid, she was like, "You should write that down.

Speaker 0

If you want to remember something, write it down."

Speaker 1

Do you remember what the goals were?

Speaker 0

The first one I ever wrote was, "Don't have a plan B. Your plan A will work."

Speaker 0

No plan B. Your plan A will work.

Speaker 0

The second one I wrote was about-

Speaker 1

Was about hosting a tour on there?

Speaker 0

Hosting a tour was definitely on there.

Speaker 1

Hosting an awards evening?

Speaker 0

Both of those was on there.

Speaker 0

I wrote down that, I wrote down being a comedian.

Speaker 0

I wrote down amongst a lot of other things.

Speaker 0

How do you know that?

Speaker 0

What is it on that?

Speaker 0

How do you know that?

Speaker 0

That was on there.

Speaker 0

I haven't sent you all a production .

Speaker 1

So we got this scamming thing we do where we can scam.

Speaker 1

Star in a major movie?

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 0

All that is down there, man.

Speaker 1

And you were 23 at the time, roughly?

Speaker 0

Yes, 23.

Speaker 1

So what's happened then?

Speaker 1

So you left college at what age?

Speaker 0

I left college around 21, 22.

Speaker 1

Okay, so there's-

Speaker 0

In between 21, 22, I left college.

Speaker 1

So it's a year or two at home with your mom.

Speaker 0

Year and a half.

Speaker 0

I'd probably say a full year has been at home before all that transpired.

Speaker 0

I tried the jobs and tried the legal stuff.

Speaker 0

That didn't work, and now I'm here, and I start to actually do the things that I wrote down.

Speaker 1

What does that mean specifically?

Speaker 0

I think the first thing that happened after I wrote these goals down, the first thing that happened, everything was taken away.

Speaker 0

It felt like everything dropped out before it got good.

Speaker 0

Everything.

Speaker 0

I wrote down these goals, wrote the date on there.

Speaker 0

Boom, I'm doing it.

Speaker 0

I was like, all right, now I'm locked in.

Speaker 0

This is it.

Speaker 0

I'm all in.

Speaker 0

I have no other option.

Speaker 0

There's no other plan B, nothing.

Speaker 0

Immediately, my car gets repossessed .

Speaker 0

I'm like, yo, what the fuck?

Speaker 0

Now I can't travel or do nothing.

Speaker 0

So it's funny because it's like as soon as you want to pursue all these things, everything has to come out.

Speaker 0

And it's confusing because most people never get a chance to see the real side of success because they quit.

Speaker 0

At that moment, that breaking point of everything falling out of your life, they're like, "Oh my God, I done prayed for all this stuff.

Speaker 0

I done wrote everything down.

Speaker 0

I got this mood board.

Speaker 0

I got everything.

Speaker 0

And then I'd lose this, and, ah, see, it don't work."

Speaker 0

But I knew, I'm like, I'm going to keep going.

Speaker 0

I'm not going to stop here.

Speaker 0

I actually made that a content piece.

Speaker 0

I recorded my car getting repossessed, and people were like, "Yo, what the hell are you posting this for?"

Speaker 0

I was like, "Well, there it is.

Speaker 0

There she goes."

Speaker 0

But really, I was sad as shit.

Speaker 0

I was like, damn, I got nothing.

Speaker 0

But I feared nothing because I'm like, I have nothing left.

Speaker 0

I'm sitting here in a room, no mattress.

Speaker 0

I'm laying on the floor.

Speaker 0

I'm using my little sister's blanket that she had as a blanket on the ground.

Speaker 0

I don't have any dressers in here.

Speaker 0

You know when you go to college, your mom gives away all your shit.

Speaker 0

She sells it, or she puts it in some warehouse.

Speaker 0

So I didn't have none of my stuff.

Speaker 0

I just was laying on the floor, and I was like, yep, I had my car, but now that's gone.

Speaker 0

So what else could I lose?

Speaker 0

My back's against the wall.

Speaker 0

I'm going to continue to keep pursuing, making videos.

Speaker 0

砰。

Boom.

Speaker 0

And that's what I did.

Speaker 0

I continued to boom.

Speaker 0

I wasn't going to stop, and I was using my mom's house as essentially a movie set.

Speaker 0

I started to flip the couch upside down.

Speaker 0

I wanted to do a surveillance camera at the top left side of the room to make it look like I'm on "First 48."

Speaker 0

I'm interviewing myself on a "First 48" episode.

Speaker 0

Boom.

Speaker 0

That's one of the skits.

Speaker 0

I have another skit where I'm using this jacket that my mom had in the closet, and I'm putting that on, I'm acting like a news reporter, Fox 5 in the backyard.

Speaker 0

And I'm putting the phone cropped up on the trash can outside in the backyard.

Speaker 0

And my mom used to come home, she'd be like, "What the fuck are you doing?"

Speaker 0

She used to see the house in shambles.

Speaker 0

But I got to give it to her because she stuck through it with me.

Speaker 0

I would always give her these updates like, "I have 10K followers now.

Speaker 0

I have 15K followers."

Speaker 0

She's like, "Okay, so what does that mean?

Speaker 0

Did you make any money?"

Speaker 0

I'm like, "No, but I have people watching."

Speaker 0

And I was like, "Oh, I got 100K followers."

Speaker 0

"Did you make any money yet?"

Speaker 0

"No, but people are watching."

Speaker 0

And I continuously just kept giving these updates as eventually I started to make money through promotion.

Speaker 0

I would promote people's music and their videos and throw it on my story, and I would do a full day of promotion.

Speaker 0

It would make me a couple hundred dollars maybe, and that would be enough to maybe go out that night.

Speaker 0

It wasn't anything real fulfilling.

Speaker 0

Or I would help my mom with groceries.

Speaker 0

I would try to do things to make money, but it wasn't really making any real money at the time.

Speaker 0

And then I continued to keep building.

Speaker 0

So yeah, no, I think those early moments really shaped a lot for me.

Speaker 1

I've got a video here as well that I-

Speaker 1

……

...

Speaker 1

found.

Speaker 1

You can explain what this one is to me.

Speaker 0

Man, yeah, man.

Speaker 0

You know what the going on, man.

Speaker 1

Oh, man.

Speaker 0

Counting me out.

Speaker 0

I ain't never been out the game.

Speaker 0

It's slow but it's moving good.

Speaker 1

That was fresh off the scamming right there.

Speaker 0

They was counting me out.

Speaker 0

That's what I'm saying.
