So I grew up in a tough environment.

I had four different fathers.

My mom, she drank alcohol and took prescription drugs, and we had no money, no food.

And then the thing that changed my whole life was a knock on the door on Thanksgiving.

There was this tall guy standing there with two bags of groceries and an uncooked frozen turkey in a pan.

And my dad saw this man.

And he went and slammed the door on the guy, but it became a very useful and distinction for me about how he and I processed that day differently.

Because there's three decisions you make every moment of your life, and the real problem is the story you have.

For example, that day, my dad's focus was the fact he not fed his family, and he was worthless.

However, I took that as strangers care.

And so the story is the belief you've told yourself over and over because belief is the invisible force that controls everything in your life.

And then there's the third decision, what am I gonna do?

And so what I decided to do is someday I'm gonna do this for others and end suffering suffering where where I I can.

Tony, I was I was shocked.

It was so surprising to me that you had the childhood you had based on the outcomes that you've accomplished in your life.

And as someone that has followed you for a very long time, I imagine that there's many other people that followed you for a very long time that have no idea about the early context.

For those people, can you take us back to the environment that shaped you into the man that you are?

Well, I think, you know, I grew up I grew up in a tough environment.

I had four different fathers.

My mom was a very intense and passionate woman.

We never had any money.

We were very very poor.

My mom was probably the most important influence of my life by far.

Very loving woman, but a very stressed woman.

And under that stress, she drank alcohol and took prescription drugs.

And when she did that, she became very violent.

So I took the brunt of that and then figured out how to manage her emotions basically.

That's where all my beginning training really happened.

And yet at the same time, she was loving, she pushed me, she believed in me, she wanted me to be something.

So she influenced my life in so many beautiful ways.

And then probably changed my life the most though is my forefather especially made it clear no one gives a damn about anybody else.

We lived in a what I thought was an upper class community or city, but we were on the other side of the tracks.

It was lower middle class.

We were, you know, literally right by the railroad tracks where the worst of the worst lived, so to speak.

And so we kinda looked down on.

And so it really looked like nobody cares.

And then the thing that changed my whole life, a single event, was a knock on the door on Thanksgiving.

We had no money, no food.

When I say no food, we had crackers and peanut butter, but not a Thanksgiving dinner.

Right?

And my dad has been mom are screaming each other through a door, and my dad had lost his job.

And he said, is your father here?

And I was like, just one moment, you know.

And I was like, it was Christmas morning.

And so I go to my dad and I go, hey, there's someone at the door for you.

And he goes, who is it?

He goes, well, you answered.

I said, I already did.

So he goes over there and I'm waiting like with such excitement for him to open the door.

And he saw this man and he was not happy.
那人还没开口说有话要说，他就说：我们不接受施舍。
He looked at this man before the guy said he had a word and he said, we don't take charity.
他转身砰地关上了门，但那人因为提着杂货往前倾身，肩膀撞到了门，门弹了回来，这让我爸更生气了。
And he went and slammed the door on the guy, but the man had leaned in because of the groceries and hit his shoulder and it bounced off, which made my dad even madder.

And they said, sir, sir, he said, somebody knows you're having a tough time.
每个人都会遇到困难的时候。
Everyone has tough times.

They want you to have this food for your family for Thanksgiving because I'm just the delivery guy.

And my father said, we don't take charity, and he pushed the door again.

But this time, because the guy's leaning, his foot now stepped in.

It hit his foot and bounced off.

And then, now my dad's getting more fired up, and I'm standing looking at this whole thing, and it's like a car crash happening.

And the guy said something to my dad.

I thought my dad was gonna punch him in the face.
他说话并不是带着恶意的。
He didn't say it meanly.
他说，先生，他说他看见我了。
He said, sir, He said he saw me.
他说，别因为你的自尊心让你的家人受苦。
He said, don't make your family, you know, suffer because of your ego.
我依然能清晰地记得那天的情景。
And I could still see it like yesterday.
我父亲脖子两侧的血管突突直跳，脸涨得通红。
My dad's veins on both sides of his neck were just pumping and he's red as can be.
然后他突然垂下了肩膀。
And then he just dropped his shoulders.
他收下了那些杂货。
He took the groceries.
他把东西重重摔在桌上，砰地关上门，连句谢谢都没说。
He slammed it on the table and he slammed the door, and he never even said thank you.
我花了大约十年时间才最终明白过来。
It took me maybe a decade to eventually figure it out.
这让我清楚地意识到，他和我处理那一天的方式有多么不同。
It became a very useful and distinction for me about how he and I processed that day differently.

Because I believe there's three decisions you make every moment of your life.

You're making them right now if you're listening to me and so is your audience.
第一个决定是：你要关注什么？
The first one is what are you gonna focus on?
你可能会关注昨天发生的事、你中午要吃什么、我说的话，以及这些话与你的关系。
You're gonna be focused on what happened yesterday, what you're gonna have for lunch, what I'm saying, how it relates to you.
你可以关注的事情有数百万种。
There are millions of things you can focus on.

But you don't experience life.

You experience the life you focus on.
我们大多数人都是扭曲和删减的生物。
And most of us are distortion deletion creatures.
我们的大脑并不会有意识地接收所有信息。
Our brains don't take it all in consciously.

It's too much.

So our brains delete things.

We distort things.

We generalize things so we can make it through our lives.

And so if you don't control your focus, you react.

And that day, my dad's focus was on the fact he did not fit his family.

It wasn't hard to figure out.

He said it over and over again after after he slammed the door.

And my focus was, wow, there's food.
真是个有意思的概念。
What a concept.

You know, I was excited.
但你每时每刻做的第二个决定，就是当你专注于某件事时，你的大脑必须弄清楚这代表什么。
But the second decision you make every moment, the minute you focus on something, your brain has to figure out what does this mean.
这是结束，还是开始？
Is this the end or the beginning?
这个人是在贬低我吗？
Is this person dissing me?
他们是在挑战我吗？
Is they are they challenging me?
他们是在指导我吗？
Are they coaching me?
他们是在爱我吗？
Are they loving me?
而你赋予它的任何意义都会引发情绪。
And whatever meaning you give it produces emotion.
从这种情绪中，你会做出第三个决定：我该做什么？
And out of that emotion, you make the third decision, what am I gonna do?
那天，我明白了我父亲的用意。
And that day, know the meaning my dad did.
不仅仅是他没有给家人吃饭，而是他认为自己毫无价值。
It wasn't just that he didn't feed his family, it's that he was worthless.
你知道，我连自己的家人都养活不了，而他却不停地嘀咕这些话。
You know, I can't even feed my family, and he muttered all this stuff continuously.

But I I took that as stranger's care.
这完全违背了我迄今为止所有的人生经历。
It completely violated everything I had experienced in my life up until that point.
我的大脑在想，如果一个陌生人连功劳都不想要，却在感恩节为我的家人提供了食物，那我必须关心陌生人。
And my brain was like, if a stranger doesn't even want credit for this, and they fed my family on Thanksgiving, I gotta care about strangers.

And so what I decided to do is someday I'm gonna I'm gonna do this for others.
所以当我17岁的时候，我走出去了，虽然没多少钱，但还过得去。
And so when I was 17, I went out and I I didn't have a lot of money, but I doing okay.

And I went to a grocery store and I told the manager what happened in my life and said, wanna feed two families.

Help me out.
给我个折扣。
Give me a discount.

And he gave me 10% off and I thought cheap bastard, but I took it.

I had the most enjoyable shopping.

I took two shopping carts and just filled it up for two families.
然后我给一家教堂打了电话，问：你们认识哪些人需要帮助，却不会开口求助？
And then I I called this church, and I said, who do you know that needs help but won't ask for it, won't come for it?

And they gave me two families' names, and so I wrote a little note.
我只写了：这是来自一位朋友的礼物。
I just put, this is a gift from a friend.
每个人都会遇到困难的时候。
Everyone has tough times.

I hope you have a beautiful Thanksgiving, and someday, if you can, pay this forward.

I didn't use the word pay it forward.

I said, do this for someone else.

But now you look at us pay it forward.

And I put love a friend.

And then I I realized I was going to the Barrio area of the city, and I was like, maybe they don't speak English.

So I had a friend of mine write in Spanish on the back, so I figured I could flip it over.

And I the first house I went to, it's a little tiny place.

I knock on the door, and this woman about this tall, Hispanic woman, sees me and sees the food and screams.

I said, no.

She's like and I was and I pulled up the note and I flipped it over in Spanish, and she read it.

And then she started to cry, and she goes and she started to get me kissing you.

She goes, no.

And I'm trying not to cry.

And so I the door opened at the tiny little place, the size of your kitchen here or your reminder of your kitchen.

It had other stuff in the van.

And we brought all this food in, and it was time to go.

And the father had left them, I found out later, four days before Thanksgiving with no money and no food.

And I'm anyway, I'm looking through the mirror and I just started crying uncontrollably.

And I'm like, why am I crying so bad?

This is such a beautiful moment.

And then I just realized, you know, my worst day of my life was really my best day.

That the day that was the most painful to me, because that father is the one who's he adopted me, I carry his name.

That I wouldn't be there that day.

I'm a good human being, but, you know, would I work as hard as I worked to feed other people?

I got my employees involved.

And then about twelve years ago, I decided I wanna fill the I wanna feed a billion meals here in The United States in ten years.

And so I I I see it as a blessing.

Why why is that?

I've suffered myself, and so I hate to see anybody suffer.

And so I'm unbelievably driven to end suffering where I can to help anyone do that, whether it be hunger or emotional hunger or depression or sadness or relationship or I just I don't know what it is.

I just I love human beings.

I hate suffering and I hate and I love to see when somebody awakens to who they are.

And we all are so much more than we ever, you know, perceive ourself to be.

But many times you don't discover that until you have to.

I like to try and show people how to do it so they wait till life hits them.

You know, anything you can imagine, we're all gonna go through extreme stress in our lives.

But how do you do you stress or do stress use you?

And so my whole thing is help people show them how to use stress.
因为我不在乎你是个多么善良的人。
Because I don't care how good a person you are.
我不在乎你多么灵性或虔诚。
I don't care how spiritual or religious you are.
我不在乎你有多聪明，或多富有，自以为有多富有。
I don't care how smart you are, how rich you think you are.
每个人一生中都会多次经历极度的压力。
Every human being is gonna go through extreme stress multiple times in their life.
真正的问题是，你打算如何应对它？
And the real question is what are gonna do with it?
首先，如果你正身处地狱，那就继续前行。
And the first thing is if you're going through hell, keep going.
但如果你坚持下去，你会发现的第一件事就是你究竟有多坚强。
But if you keep going, you discover, number one, how strong you really are.
因为只要你不放弃，你就会认识真正的自己。
Because if you don't give up, you'll discover who you are.
你会发现的是，谁才是你真正的朋友。
The thing that you find out is who your real friends are.
因为当情况不那么顺利时，你才能看清谁才是真正的朋友。
Because when things aren't so great, you get to see who those are.
第三，这几乎就像给你接种了针对未来压力的疫苗。
And then third, it almost gives you like an inoculation to future stress.
因为我有个朋友在越南被击落，在那里被单独监禁了七年。
Because I got a friend that was shot down in Vietnam and was in a prison there for seven years in solitary confinement.

And Captain Coffee is his name.
我记得后来遇见他时，他正经历一场与国税局的艰难纠纷，那实在太不公平了。
And I remember I met him later in life, and he was going through this tough thing with the IRS, and it was so unfair.

It took him three years.

He got his money back.

But I said, doesn't that drive you crazy?
他说：经历过北越人之后，
He goes, after I've been with the North Vietnamese.

He goes, you know, what could the IRS do to me?

You know?

So I think those pieces are there, but everyone gets called on the journey.

Most people try to resist it.

But that journey, that's what the call is.

It's called to grow.

So I'm I'm big on change your story, change your life.

And I'm big on understanding the narrative of where you are in the story of your life.

So I look at my my especially my grandkids and my daughter, and I say they're entering a world that none of us have known before, and so how do I arm them for it?

There's seasons of history.

And your season of history shapes how you shape your life.

So you can look at a thousand years of Roman history, I'm very much in history, and five hundred years of Anglo American history, and you start to see patterns.

And then the final skill, and this is what I'm teaching my children, is you ultimately wanna become a pattern creator.

And so I remember I I wrestled with this like it was the biggest decision of my life, a week's pay.
