Hello, hi and welcome to another episode of the Emma Guns Show.
How delightful to be in your company.
How are you?
I do hope that you are very well.
I thought I would jump on.
As you know, I have said that I will come back from time to time.
I'll be here every now and again.
I'll crop up when you least expect it.
And I suspect you probably weren't expecting this.
But I thought I would come on and just talk about The Devil Wears Prada two.
Partly because I went to go and see it last week and I have to admit I did think oh this is something I would have liked to have talked about on the podcast' so I thought well actually nothing is stopping me I mean I've still got the keys to the building I can still get in I can still record no one's taken my equipment away.
So I thought that I would do that.
And then I also wanted to use this as an opportunity to tell you, if you're following me on Instagram, you'll see that I announced that I became the, a Superdrug, not a Superdrug economist, I became the beauty columnist for Superdrug.
And so every month I will publish a column, Insider Secrets from Superdrug's beauty editor Emma Guns.
And so this is also part of that sort of partnership, if you like.
So I write the monthly column, I do some social media, and really one of the reasons why I was so keen to work with Superdrug is because they have a massive beauty offering.
If you are not in The UK, just to give you an idea, Superdrug is on pretty much every high street in the land.
The email list that my column goes out to, I think it's every second Sunday or like the middle Sunday of the month, They have the third largest customer database in the country.
They have a really engaged, really smart, very savvy beauty shopper.
And so this column is really to speak to them.
So they're probably you, if you aren't already signed up for it.
Please do go to the link that will be in the show notes because that's where you can not only read April Amaze newsletters but you can register for the Health and Beauty card and when you do that you will automatically get my column delivered to your inbox on the Sunday that it goes live, which is rather fabulous, I think.
So anyway, we'll talk about that in a minute because I wanted to talk about the products that were in the May and April edition, or April and May edition.
But let's just talk about The Devil Wears Prada.
Because I was very I have to be honest.
I was indifferent about going to see it in many ways.
And then over the weekend before I went and you know what I'm like if you've been here for a while.
I do love a weekday solo cinema trip.
And I remember my lovely friend, Aty Joule, saying to me when I went freelance in 2012, enjoy the free and freelance, and that means going to the cinema on a Tuesday afternoon.
And it's something I've really stuck to.
I love films, so it's great.
So all over the weekend, every time I open social media, there was a clip from it.
And every time I open TikTok, there was a clip.
And I thought, well, I now really need to see this because I feel as though I've seen about twenty minutes of this film just through my phone, and I want to see it properly.
And the other reason I wanted to go and see it is because I have been a magazine journalist.
Like, that's when this book came out, I distinctly remember being on a train on the way back from Manchester.
I was on a Virgin train coming back from a photoshoot, and it was the height of summer.
And thank goodness that day I had packed my dictaphone, that was how long ago, it wasn't phones, was like a proper old school dictaphone, and a few cassettes, And I had I think it was even before the digital ones, genuine genuinely.
And I had done an interview.
I can't remember who the interview was with, but I remember being on this Virgin train.
And it just stopped.
Like an hour down the track, it just stopped.
And there was no information about why the train had stopped.
And so I thought, I think I've got a book in here.
And I had picked up this book, The Devil Wears Prada, but I hadn't opened it yet.
And I read it from start to finish on that delayed Virgin train.
Was a so it was a red hot day, really properly boiling hot day.
I think we ended up getting back to Houston.
I kid you not, at 01:00 in the morning.
There was some horrible sort of failure that just meant no trains could move whatsoever.
It was a real nightmare.
But it meant that I had, I think, about eight hours to read this book.
And so I read it from start to finish.
But then because everybody was quite disgruntled on the train, in the infinite wisdom that day, the train crew decided to just give away everything that was on the drinks trolleys for free.
So disgruntled turned into drunken disgruntled.
And there I was just sitting in the corner reading The Devil Wears Prada, absolutely transfixed.
And actually somebody did get taken off the train by the police.
The police actually had to go I'm pretty sure, anyway, beside the point.
What I'm saying is is at the time, as I was reading this book, I was a journalist.
I had been up to Manchester for the day.
I had interviewed celebrities probably from either Coronation Street or Emmerdale or one of their soap operas.
And I was on my way home.
So I was very much in the thick of this world where I was the beauty editor of Okay Magazine, was interviewing celebrities, my job was pinging back and forth, doing the important work of interviewing famous people and also compiling the fashion and beauty section.
And so it meant quite a lot to me, it meant like this was my domain and it wasn't because the book was not representative of anything that I think I ever really experienced in terms of Andy's, sort of the side story.
But the environment of a best selling magazine was very much something that I knew.
And even though Okay was a weekly and it was very different from Runway, which was obviously meant to be Vogue, and Miranda Priestly was meant to be Emma Wintour, I had enough friends in the industry.
I knew the guys at Vogue.
I knew the guys on the glosses.
So I had enough of an insight into what that world looked like to kind of think, actually, yeah, there's some is some truth to all of this.
So I found it to be I've watched that film many times.
I find it sweet.
It the whole thing about you go into work and someone's like, here here's a banging on of some phone or you the handbags.
There was a time when that absolutely was something that happened.
It doesn't anymore, and it didn't by the time I left magazines, it was nowhere near as prevalent, but there were times where I would get the new skincare collection from an Estee Lauder brand like Clinique, for example, and with it would come a Mulberry handbag or would get from Revlon were always so generous, Revlon will give you a pair of Christina Boutin shoes.
Like, it just that was pretty standard when you were operating in those best selling magazines.
And my magazine at the time was the best selling weekly.
So I was in a very fortunate position to be running the pages, beauty pages of a magazine that most brands wanted to be seen in anyway.
So that was the position, the lens through which I saw it.
So I thought, yes, lot of this is true.
There are some people at the top who treat you terribly.
You have to be scrappy.
You have to think like I always think about the Harry Potter story in The Devil Wears Prada, where Miranda Priestly gives Andy Sacks the impossible task of getting her two bound copies of a preview proof of the next installment of the Harry Potter books.
And Andy does it because she uses her wiles.
I mean, in the book, in the film, by talking to the only other person that we've met who isn't part of runway but you know so very lucky.
But you had to be like that, you had to be scrappy, had to think on your feet, you had to outwit these people who did seem to have their foot on your neck at all times and did seem to be constantly testing and trialing you.
And you had this threat hanging over you, you did.
That was definitely the the experience that I felt.
You had this threat hanging over you at all times that if you underperformed, if you couldn't meet the task, you were out.
I And was listening to a podcast actually that was talking about The Devil Wears Prada 2 and talking about Vogue and saying, but actually, if you look at the staff at American Vogue and it's been there a really long time, most people are lifers or they don't last a year.
I think that's very true of those sorts of media environments.
I'm sure it's not just media, I'm sure there are many different industries where that's true, the environment is very specific and it is suited to certain types of people, like you have to act in a certain way.
So anyway, Devil Wears Prada, I thought yes.
When I talk to people, they're like, do you know the freebies?' like, no, absolutely true.' Are there people who do 'Yeah, absolutely true.
Sometimes you just kind of get the most vague thing and you have to figure it out.
But I do think when I think back about my early journalistic career, do think about the fact that people were really enterprising.
I think about the fact I mean, this was the day before social media the days before social media.
So if you wanted to track somebody down to get them for an interview, you had you had to be resourceful.
Anyway, we'll move on.
When they said The Devil Wears Prada was coming out, Devil Wears Prada two was coming out, I was a little bit sort of like, I wonder what they're going to do with this.
Because actually, and this I would say is true having watched the film, I really like Meryl Streep as an actress.
I could watch her all the live long day.
Seeing her on the screen as Miranda Priestly again was really brilliant.
But there is something about Miranda Priestly existing in the consciousness, the ether, as the version that she was in The Devil Wears Prada is something that I don't think needed to be updated or changed.
I don't think that we needed to see a softening of or de clawing of a character like Miranda in order I don't know.
I don't think we did there's a part of me that thinks we just didn't need to see it.
We just didn't need to see it.
And I do think that if we did need to see it, I would have I would have rather the original author Lauren had written the book or written the story or written the screenplay for the film.
I know that that would probably be impossible because I think maybe Bridges have been burned.
I don't know in terms of I don't know if you've seen the promotion, but so much of it has been with Anna Wintour and with Vogue.
So it's kind of like this person who had a terrible experience there has now been cut out and the people that she was railing against are now kind of have kind of got the reins on the work or the brand or the the trademark or whatever it might be anyway.
So that was that was sort of how I felt.
I felt a little bit sad to see Miranda in a different version because I think that the portrayal of Miranda in the first film is so iconic.
And actually, it was of its time.
And I do think there are and were there were and definitely still are people like that definitely in the media.
And I was actually did I already mention Ate Jewel in this how funny.
I saw Ate the other day, and we were talking about the fact that this film was coming out.
And we were also talking about bad behavior in the industry, generally, when we were talking about Miranda Priestly.
And I said that when I was a young journalist and I came into the world of journalism, what I observed was that the more demanding you were, the better treatment that you got.
And Ase sort of looked at me in the way that Ase does and she was like, oh, you can be a bitch if you're making people rich.
And that was just the moment of, like, yeah.
That's absolutely true.
That is absolutely true.
And that's that's sort of the point of Miranda, and that's sort of the point of that whole moment in time.
And I just thought, yeah.
And it still is true today, but I think that there were lots more veils, many more veils covering it going on right now.
It's far less.
Or maybe it's even more brazen.
Like, I don't know about you, but I found the Alex Cooper, Alex Earl beef on social media.
I was like, that's just two really attractive, wealthy girls being bitches like girls in school used to be to each other.
Like, where is our professional conduct?
Where is where is our professional conduct?
I feel we and I really feel old when I say things like that, but I think seeing scrappy, sort of petty, small minded rouse on social media, although the algorithm loves them, I'm like, we should be embarrassed.
Like, we should say to our kids, not that I have kids, but we should be saying, you know that that's not how you behave.
You know that that's you know that that's not how you one up somebody, like, sort of belittling them on social media is is not the way to conduct yourself, especially not when a lot of people have put you off on a pedestal.
So, yes, if you you can be a bitch as long as you're making people rich, still stands true today.
I did not care for Andy Saxe in this film.
I but with that said, because she's very she just goes back into the environment twenty years later and is deferential and a little bit fawning and a little bit pathetic, and is so emotionally invested in making sure Miranda's okay and trying to please Miranda and like, where's the growth, Andy?
Where is the growth?
You're supposed to be this brilliant journalist who's done incredible things and at the beginning of the film she wins an award, and yet you just completely regressed to who you were before.
With that said, I have definitely been in environments with editors where you just think if I can just please you, this will be the time when you'll actually cut me some slack.
Didn't swear then, but anyway.
Then there was a very there's a film one of my favorite films is with Arna Farris and Chris Evans, it's called What's Your Number?
And I must have seen that film, I swear to you, when I went through a period of Insomnia about six years ago, I think I watched it most nights at about 2AM.
Even if I had my eyes closed and I was listening to it.
And I have watchedlistened to that film so many times that I'm now aware of where the editing went wrong.
I think that film is brilliant, but I think that the edit made a really good film quite bad because there are so many things now when I'm like, oh, they've obviously cut something that meant that.
They've obviously taken something out that would have explained why that happened.
But okay, now now on my hundredth viewing and like, I don't know, eight years of watching it.
Now I know what was supposed to happen, which is very sad for me to say.
But anyway but I think the same is true for The Devil Wears Prada two.
I don't think it stands up to the edit.
There were so many decisions and cuts that have been made, particularly with Andy's love interest.
Also, she gets made redundant at the beginning of the film and moves into a new, very big apartment sort of within the first third, I think, which just doesn't make any sense.
If somebody is no longer financially secure and then goes to a magazine, you don't know anything about her contract, she's already been there before, she didn't last very like, you just you wouldn't make that financial commitment, and the love interest just doesn't make any sense.
I think we see her love interest three times, and it's like, What?
But the love interest in the first film wasn't amazing either.
But then one of the things, and I don't want go into a plot by plot, I mean, it was really lovely to see Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci and Emmy Bluntback, I mean they're all absolute dynamite on screen.
But, I don't want to say too much about some of the characters in case it gives it away and you haven't seen it yet.
But one thing that was that did really bug me, and I think this has been spoken about enough, is that essentially there is this runway's in danger.
And there are only two options for survival in the film and both of them rely on a billionaire to save it.
And that in itself is really weak storytelling.
But secondarily, the idea that a billionaire would invest in print media when print media is, and I'm in it every day with print and with digital, but it absolutely dying.
Nobody it's a bad investment.
So if somebody has made billions, they are going to be smart enough to know that media is not where it's at unless it's a vanity project, which I think is what they were alluding to.
But at the same time, that wasn't what they were thinking, the characters are thinking.
They were thinking, great job security, great, everything's going back to normal.
It's not.
And so that for me was the fairy tale.
But I was what I was was entertained, and I was entertained with characters and with scenery that felt wonderful to be back in.
And I just the music, the refrain, there are were so many things in there that you just just go, oh, yeah.
I know that.
Oh, that's familiar.
So it was very nostalgic, and I did really enjoy it.
But I think they couldn't have done the same thing.
Miranda couldn't have been the same.
Obviously, she had to change and evolve.
But my one of my best friends actually said to me, I just don't think they needed to make this.
And I'm I'm torn because, yes, in isolation as it stood, particularly Miranda Priestly was iconic.
And Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada two is a version of Miranda I don't think I needed to see.
But that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable, and it doesn't mean it wasn't fun, and it doesn't mean I actually think maybe my age means I won't enjoy it as much as somebody who's maybe ten, fifteen, twenty years younger than me.
I think for people who because it does it references the woke changes that have happened in culture.
So I have a suspicion that maybe younger people who sort of saw it when they were very young and thought, oh my god, that's the worst, that's awful and who have never known working environments like that.
They may feel as though The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a redemption story or a morality tale or a story of justice.
But for me watching it from my age with my perspective, my career in the industry, I kind of thought, yeah, it was fun to it was fun to dip back in, but I didn't need to.
But hey.
But I'd be interested to know what you think.
I'd be really interested to know what you think.
Anyway, moving on to my digital column in Superdrug.
I just want to tell you about this because, obviously, I know that lots of you have been in touch since I paused the podcast.
And I like, well, where can I catch up with you?
Obviously, there's my sub stack where I'm doing those longer reads.
But I wanted to tell you about this column because essentially, it really is to speak to the women, well, men and women, who want to spend their money wisely on beauty products that really work.
It's as simple as that.
I think if you've been following me on Instagram, if you've been listening to the conversations I have on here about beauty, you'll know that that's where I always come from.
It's how can I make the wisest decisions for me and spend my money in a way that will make me feel good about what I've spent?
So in my first column, which is in April, I said, listen.
I'm not going to recommend anything to you that I wouldn't by myself.
And I'm going to tell you exactly why I think you might need it, exactly how to make it work, all of those things.
So my first column, which is still applicable now, was about how because it was April, it was like the spring clean.
And I was talking about the fact that actually you can make one change to your daily beauty routine for your body, and you can see a real difference.
And that's by changing from just a simple moisturizer to a moisturiser that will exfoliate.
And we're talking about chemical exfoliants, so not the gritty bits, but the acids.
So we're talking about the body lotions that contain AHAs and BHAs.
BHAs are brilliant if you've got acneic skin or you get congested skin or breakouts.
So things like if you've got dry dull congested skin like salicylic acid will be absolutely brilliant like those BHAs, PHAs fantastic.
If you just want to get rid of that grey dullness go into the glycolics or the 's, those fruit sugars, those sugar canes and the milks that gently exfoliate and remove dead layers.
So that was sort of where we were focused, the main body of it.
But then I was also talking about these treat basically every month in the newsletter, it's like, this is the thing I'm gonna treat myself to.
This is the thing I'm stocking the thing I'm stocking up on, and this is the thing I'm treating a friend to.
And then my first one, it was I was treating myself to this optimum collagen serum because we talk about collagen loads.
And it was just like a little news piece.
Then these exfoliating gloves for the shower, if you followed me for a while, I've talked about how I have to use exfoliating gloves in the shower.
Otherwise, you know, all bets are off.
And then also these brilliant socks that you can put on that hydrate your feet.
They're not the ones that make your feet peel.
They're the ones that hydrate your feet.
And I love the coconut ones.
They are absolutely brilliant.
But then the other thing I spoke about was K beauty that turned up in the main newsletter because there were some absolutely brilliant and actually I hadn't fully understand this until maybe last year that Superdrug have a marketplace on their website.
So as much as they've got a store in every high street, they also have this marketplace online, where smaller brands can essentially have their products and then the products come from the brand rather than Superdrug.
So when it comes to K beauty, one of the brands that Superdrug actually sort of incubated on the marketplace was Beauty of Joseon, which is one of the biggest launches of, I don't know, the last few years.
And it is a brand that people are going absolutely nuts for, like genuinely are beside themselves with how good these formulas are.
And so in my main newsletter, just to kind of give it a little bit of a put it on your radar, there were two products that are unbelievable.
There's the Abib, I think, PDRN collagen.
It's like a sleeping jelly mask.
Unbelievable.
And then the SunBoon edited deep collagen retinol.
It's a gel cream, but it's got these capsules.
So the actual actives are in little balls sort of suspended in the gel, and then you keep the spoon.
I always get rid of the spoon with any beauty product that comes with this spoon, but you keep the spoon and you spoon out a little bit of the gel and also one of the little capsules, and then you can explode it on the back of your hand or you can put it on your face, but basically, that's the delivery system.
And they are so nice and so special.
And basically, you could shop far and wide.
You could look high and low for K beauty.
But actually, Superdrug Marketplace is a gold mine, an absolute gold mine of Kay beauty products.
So I wanted to let you know about that in addition to talk to you about The Devil Wears Prada two and just put it on your radar.
So basically, in the show notes for this podcast, I'm going to put the link to my May newsletter and my April column and my May column.
And when you go into those and there's way more product recommendations than I've just told you about here, but I don't wanna give the game away in one go.
But if you when you go to that page, you'll see that it says register for the health and beauty card, and it says register now.
If you click that and put in your details, you'll get a card.
I've got one because I collect points and I get free or I use the points to redeem against purchases when I build them up.
Because boy, do I build them up with my going in every four weeks to get my Clairol Root Touch up.
But you will then automatically get the newsletter, get the column into your inbox when it goes live.
So you won't have to keep going to the website, can keep going to the website or keep sharing the link on my Instagram.
But if you just want it to automatically come to you, that's the way.
So anyway, I would like to know what do you think of The Devil Wears Prada.
So when this episode goes live, I will put it on Substack.
You can let me know on the Substack comments.
I will also put it on Instagram, you can also get back to me on there.
Usual places at Emma Guns, Substack.
All the links will be in the show notes.
I know it's been a few weeks, but I hope that you're very well.
I hope that you have seen The Devil Wears Prada 2 and have thoughts because I would love to know what you think.
And I would also be really keen to know what you think of this Superdrug Beauty column because I'm really proud of it.
I think I'm really pleased And I'm really delighted to be able to share those products.
I mean, basically products across the board, but specifically, I really love the way that Marketplace incubates these sort of smaller brands with absolutely incredible formulations.
So I'd love to know what you think about those.
So go to the newsletter and then when you you can go into the marketplace and have a proper nosy, and I think you'll be really, really impressed.
Anyway, that's it for now.
Thank you so much for listening.
Thank you so much for subscribing wherever you're subscribed, whether it's on the podcast, the Substack, or follow me on Instagram.
You know how much I appreciate it.
But, anyway, I will catch up with you very soon, and I will see you on the next one.
