Today, we're joined by Chuck Kessler, who's CISO at Pendo, and that's Pendo dot I o if you're looking him up.
This is not a sponsored episode.
This is one of our ask a CISO series.
But as a security leader, Chuck has a front row seat on how new technologies like Model Context Protocol or MCP are reshaping the way enterprises connect AI systems with the tools and data that they use every day.
So we're gonna talk about why Pindo adopted MCP, how they're using it internally, and what it means for the future of enterprise security automation and then also the risk management.
Well, Chuck, thank you for being here.
And I guess let's just maybe set some groundwork.
What is Agentic AI?
Because I'm hearing a lot about it.
I know our listeners are hearing a lot about it.
What does it mean to you?
So, Genetic AI, I believe is a term everybody is trying to wrap their brains around and everybody sort of has maybe a slightly different definition of what it means for them at this point.
From my perspective, I'm looking at it as it's like a job that can run inside of, an AI infrastructure inside of an LLM to go and execute tasks to actually do multiple things as opposed to just answering one question to take a series of actions and have it take different actions based on the results of a previous answer.
So yeah, as the name would imply, it's an agent that is something that is acting on your behalf.
Could you give an example that you feel comfortable sharing?
Sure.
So I think the prototypical example I hear most people talking about are the, you know, kind of the travel booking tools where you tell your AI tool, your tool of choice, cloud chat, hey, I would like to go book a trip to Madrid next June.
And it goes and figures out, okay, you know, hey, you typically like to travel this time of day.
These are the airlines you like.
These are the frequent flyer programs you have.
I'm going to go and check what seems to be the best options for those.
And then in some cases, I think AgenTic AI can either just directly take an action at that point, or it might come back and say, you know, look, I found these options, you know, would you like me to get some more information?
Would you like to pick one of these?
So the human and the loop can be part of that.
Or you could just tell it, you know what, just go book it.
I personally would not do that, but certainly an option that it could then go book the flight and then take that next step of, okay, well, what are the best hotels?
And again, same thing, what are the hotels you typically like to stay at?
Where do you have program points?
And it then goes and looks to see what the best options are.
And again, could take an action directly or it could come back and ask you for further information before it makes a decision as to what to do next.
So that's obviously a real world example, you know, with a human activity.
If you think about it in a security context or something of that nature, you could look at it, you know, in a very similar fashion, you're dealing with some alert that has just come in and you have run books that you might want to take an action based on.
So your LLM can learn that run book and decide, you know, here's a set of actions I could take.
Again, same sort of idea that it could either automatically take an action on your behalf or come back and ask you, what do you think I should do?
You know, this is what I found.
I need some input from you human to tell me what to do next.
So flexible from that standpoint, you know, I think in the state that most people would like to get to is to be comfortable enough with the agent that it's actually going to go take the action on your behalf.
But, yeah, most of us are just gonna take us a while, I think, to get to that point where we're willing to turn the reins over completely.
I'm definitely not there because I can't I've just before we got on this call, I was trying to get chat GPT to to help me with some flights for next month in Europe that are a little convoluted, and I can't even massage that out of it.
But Yeah.
One of the things I I keep so I'm definitely not gonna, like, tell just tell the book stuff for me at
this point.
Now I know some of the stuff that's more tuned inside of organizations like, you know, where you are.
You you guys do a lot of stuff to make it your own thing.
It's not just, you know, a public chat GPT instance running.
One of the things that I keep hearing is that, you know, agentic AI I'm you know, I was just before we started recording telling Chuck and and Drew, I feel like a like an AI goober, like a total new because I'm still trying to wrap my head around the terminology.
Every time I think I understand something, some other thing comes out.
And then when I asked for definition of that, I'm like, but isn't that what we were what that thing was doing before?
And the answer is no.
I'm just wrong.
But one thing that I keep hearing is that agentic AI, that one of the differences is they start to be more specialized in their in their task.
And so weeks ago at this point, you know, Drew brought up Model Context Protocol, which is what we're gonna get to in a little bit.
So to me watching this, it's it seems like a little bit scary because I'm assuming I mean, you're you're a CISO of a company who makes software that other companies, you know, consume and use inside of their product.
So security is a huge issue for you, not just because it's your own stuff, but you have other people's stuff as well.
对。
Mhmm.
And and I have this kind of like it just feels like black holes of information going in and out.
And so when you think about like agentic AI and how you're using these things, what are some of the security issues that you're dealing with as a CISO?
Yeah, mean, I think the biggest one, particularly with respect to agentic AI that concerns me at the moment is the authentication model because typically, you know, when we're going to, again, we're going to talk about MCP's in a minute, I think this applies there as well.
Somehow or another that agent has to operate under your identity.
For example, OpenAI released their ChatGPT agents.
There might actually be an actual name for it.
I think it just might be agent mode or something like that, they released that, you know, month or so ago.
And, you know, because our directive at Pindo is like, we need to embrace AI.
好的。
Okay.
You know, we're going turn this on.
We're going to figure out how it works.
And in doing that we found, okay, yeah, it basically is prompting you for your authentication credentials, including your MFA to log you into an application like say Salesforce or log the agent into Salesforce.
So like, okay, that can be kind of scary.
How is it actually doing that?
Basically, they're standing up little VMs that capture all of that.
And again, I'm like, I'm going to butcher the technical details.
向OpenAI道歉。
My apologies to OpenAI.
I may not be doing you justice here.
You know, it all goes away when the session is done.
But you know, if you kind of think about that, you're essentially spoofing that authentication process, which typically has had a human behind it in the Obviously it seems like there's a lot of opportunities for something like that to go wrong.
So I think that's the biggest thing that concerns me.
I know we talk a lot about prompt injections and things of that nature.
I mean, are certainly potential concerns as well.
We see, there have been some interesting sort of quasi hypothetical instances of that where, you know, I think in the real world, we're not, we haven't really seen too much in the way of true prompt injection attacks that really are meaningful.
I'm not saying that they aren't out there, but to me it seems like less of a risk than something like, you know, how this authentication model could fail, especially once we start talking about agentic AI.
And that, you know, obviously everybody's concerned about data leakage in their information being used to train global models.
I think most of us that are using enterprise options for things like ChatGPT or Cloud, those global training switches are kind of turned off by default.
And if you're not using the enterprise ones, are options for you to go and turn it off manually on the enterprise side.
If you're not doing that, you're if you're using the consumer version, then you have to build upon your users to go do that, which you know how that works out.
Which is why we tend to go ahead and invest in the enterprise versions because that tends to get you a little bit further down the road in terms of security and privacy.
One thing I will mention, again, not at all throwing OpenAI under the bus actually, because they've been a great partner to us.
But one of the things they explained to me and their differences between consumer products and the enterprise products is the consumer product is basically the training ground for the enterprise product.
So, you know, they roll things out more quickly in the consumer version.
Those things are not fully baked from a security privacy compliance perspective until essentially they're using the consumer role to do some testing.
And so there's a slower roll up roll up period to get those latest models into the enterprise version because again, they're learning their consumer product, the things that can go wrong before they they deploy this.
I mean, that makes sense.
I would expect that.
I mean, even if we're paying some nominal fee as a consumer, I fully expect anything I I put in there to not necessarily be be accurate when it gets spit back out at me.
Well, the the interesting kind of push and pull on that that I get is that we do have some people that are so gung ho to get the latest and greatest features that like, Hey, can I just use the consumer version, the $200 a month per version because it's going to get this thing two weeks before the enterprise version?
Yeah, I understand.
And maybe there's some kind of sandbox ways we can do that for certain things just so we can get a small number of people, you know, kind of direct access to those things more quickly.
I see Chuck is a perfect example of the type of CISO that's gonna figure out how to get to the yes, instead of just no suck it up for two weeks.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, I I do sometimes say, hey.
We it's coming two weeks.
They told me it's two weeks, so we can we can wait the two weeks.
对。
Yeah.
We can
two And if there's a really compelling reason, you know, we'll go and find some other way, but to do it, no.
是的。
Yep.
So I have a question around some of the authentication identity because I know I've heard, you know, some, you know, seen some presentations and heard some rumblings around, you know, especially in the cloud using identity as micro segmentation.
So, like, you know, down scoping what any identity can do to the to the point that it only basically has one function.
Do is there opportunity to do that with agentic AI?
Is that kind of what we're doing?
Do they have their own identity that's down scoped to what they need to do, or are we just not there yet?
Yeah, I mean, I don't think we're there yet.
Most of what I've seen far so far would be, you know, the user providing their identity to the agent to operate under the context of that user.
I mean, you could obviously extend that to like a service account or something like that.
And when you think about building something that might be an MCP server inside of your product, that might be a more viable way to do things where it actually is absolutely more viable ways to do things in certain cases than kind of using the user identity.
But yeah, I mean, I do think there's an opportunity there.
Am I smart enough to tell you exactly what it looks like?
No, I'm not.
Well, I'm curious, this ChatGPT example you mentioned where you give it your authentication credentials or your authorization credentials and it logs in sort of on your behalf, does it also inherit sort of, like, all of your rights?
Like, you know, if, you know, I have the permissions if I needed to to delete this entire database, like, does the agent have that?
Like, it just gets everything you get?
对。
Yeah.
I mean, it would because again, I'm going back to my Salesforce example that because actually that was something that came up when agent mode, we turned on the agent mode and salespeople that wanted to use it to automate some things that they were working on in Salesforce.
And it's actually probably a great use case.
But yeah, it's going to operate as that user.
Now, those users are not typically full on Salesforce admin.
So, and even the ones that are, are, you know, going to be using separate identities to do that.
Hopefully not the one that you're passing to the agent mode, but currently that is the model right now is that it will operate as you, you know, the plus side of that is it's only going to give you access to the things you have access to see versus if it were kind of a more general service account, which had broader access, then, you know, you could potentially get access to things that you didn't have access, weren't supposed to have access to.
So, yeah, that is the model right now.
You also mentioned like this virtual element that it's sort of, spinning up a we use the example of a VM if even though that's not maybe technically correct.
Is there a time limit on it?
Like how long does it have your credentials that it can use to do things?
That is a great question.
I don't know the answer to perception is that essentially the time limit is the limit of when it's doing this particular job.
So for that particular session, so it's going to tear all that stuff down at the end of the session.
I have to go back and look at my notes to 100% verify that, but I don't think it's persistent.
So it's not hanging out there for thirty days or something like that.
Okay, so like a VM potentially, once the session has ended, it's blowing away those credentials.
It's not storing them anywhere.
So you don't have to worry about your credentials lurking somewhere in a model.
That was the specific question I asked.
The fact was, are you actually caching these credentials someplace?
And they told me no.
So for example, that password that you're typing in, it's not being stored.
It's simply being used to actually do the authentication to get the OAuth token.
So it's storing the OAuth token for the session, but it's not storing your password.
Can a user enterprise validate that somehow or are we just kind of trusting what we're being told because we have to at this point?
At this point, yes.
I'm trusting.
I could dig deeper.
I'm sure they would be happy to connect me with an engineer that would talk me through and show me exactly what they're doing.
OpenAI is obviously, you know, has a lot of resources behind it.
So I'm trusting that they are thinking through those things and doing the appropriate things from a penetration testing perspective and a compliance perspective to ensure they're not doing something stupid with those credentials.
We hope.
所以
So
do you feel like this is entirely new to this agentic AI space is entirely new territory for CISOs and security minded folks in terms of understanding and managing risk?
Or is it look.
Because you said your chief concern is authentication and authorization, and we've been dealing with that forever.
So is it just sort of like same risks in a new context or is this are we dealing with something new?
I think it's mostly the same risks in a new context, but one that is moving very quickly and has a lot of opportunity for quick expansion into territories that maybe we weren't expecting.
I think the whole non deterministic nature of AI in general just makes it so, you know, the typical things that we would do from a security testing perspective are harder.
You know, we typically think we want to test for something and ensure we don't get this type of output or we do get this type of output.
It's really hard to do that when the output is non deterministic.
So yeah, that's where I think it is a new risk just in general with respect to AI, because it is harder to do that more traditional type of testing that we're used to in the security world.
And the example, so I'm trying to wrap my head around the use cases for both agentic AI, but also I guess where we're gonna be getting to, which is like Model Context Protocol, which my understanding is kind of those agent those AI entities talking to each other in a structured way, but without the structure of us kind of integrating via, like, APIs manually.
So that they kind of they coordinate with each other and handle it, basically, instead of us telling them how to exactly coordinate with each other.
So the example you gave was kinda like, you know, the the Salesforce user and and somebody who has, you know, certain rights between, like, CRM and maybe scraping some stuff out of their email or I'm just making stuff up.
对。
Mhmm.
Right?
But are there also use cases of these more central to I mean, like, in your case, you know, you guys create software.
Is this also being used kind of further inside of the organization for for actions or development or or something using AI that's not kind of user based, that's more systemic?
对。
Yeah.
I can talk a little bit about how we're building this in our product because, and I think this, the same model can apply across a lot of different tools that are out there.
Like, for example, Atlassian has, and just going to kind of bridge into the MCP discussion, I think with this, because I think this comes So into for example, Atlassian has an MCP product out there, an MCP server, and essentially what it is, is a LLM USB bus, if you will, to their APIs.
So we're building the same sort of thing inside of our product.
We have something called aggregations, which are essentially kind of a query language to go and say, you know, tell me this profile of my visitors for the last thirty days in my website visitors, that's what we do, product analytics.
Those aggregations are kind of a special sauce language.
People do learn it and they can do their own API queries and interact with it.
But the LLM has no idea how any of that stuff works.
So that's where the MCP has come into play, is the MCP understands how our aggregations work, and it understands how to talk to other LLMs and other MCPs that might be asking it for a particular question.
So it can take that that question and say, Okay, you know, you need to go get this information from this particular database and then basically package that up and provide it back to the LLM who is then going to essentially do the AI magic on it and answer the question that you wanted.
But just kind of remembering that LLMs are trained on information that, for example, ChatGPT five, I think the cutoff date was almost a year ago, 09/30/2024, I believe.
So it doesn't know anything that's happened since then.
So if it's going to answer a question based on anything that's happened since then, you have to kind of feed it the information that it needs, or you have to be able to connect it and say, hey, go access this website or whatever to learn about this and, you know, can scrape and things like that.
But MCP is basically our way to essentially provide that information, that kind of more up to date information back to the LLM, but it is specialized.
So it knows how to talk to our product.
The Atlassian MCP knows how to talk to Jira and Confluence and all the other Atlassian products and package that information back up and give it back to an LLM so the LLM can do its AI magic and give you the answer that you need based on all that information that sits in the Atlassian cloud.
对。
So Yeah.
MCP is essentially built around a client server model where, in your example, let me see if I've got this right, you essentially have an LLM that's acting as a client, and you're saying, I need to get some information out of our Atlassian instance.
And instead of me digging around in it or whatever, I'm gonna ask my MCP client, go get this stuff from Atlassian.
My client uses the MCP protocol to talk to the Atlassian server.
Atlassian has set up this server to be able to go and find all the stuff on the back end.
It finds that stuff and delivers it back to my client, and it's all happening via natural language because I'm just using natural language prompts on my client end.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, that's I think that's a pretty good summary.
MCP's can either run locally on your laptop, desktop, or they can run-in the cloud.
So actually the very first MCPs were more ones that would run on your local device.
And essentially you might be running like a cloud desktop.
Anthropic, I think was the first that did MCP.
And so it was designed to work with cloud.
Essentially it was a local server running on your laptop that the cloud desktop would talk to.
And then you would essentially give that local server information on how to go and query all these other different things.
And that's where you would pull an open source code, which again, kind of a scary thing to do.
Especially this year.
没错。
Exactly.
Into your local MCP and it would then go and do the thing and then give the information back to cloud desktop, which would then feed that back into the cloud LLM and, you know, do it.
It's again, it's AI magic.
The other model is the MCP runs in the cloud, it runs remotely.
So that's where something like the Atlassian MCP server is out there.
And so you can point your desktop MCP server at the Atlassian MCP.
You have to train your local or instruct your local MCP server on how to talk to Atlassian because they've already built that for you.
So yeah, those are the two models.
Again, I might be butchering some of the technical details, but as I understand it, those are the kind of the two deployment models, either you're putting it locally on your laptop or you're accessing one that's provided by your third party service provider on your SaaS solution that sits out in the cloud.
And again, that's what we're building at Pendo is a version of that, that currently it just works within our own product.
We're not externally exposing it, but it's actually how we are adding AI capabilities to become more of a chat mode to our product itself.
But eventually we'll probably expose that to the world as well.
So even if it's not exposed to the world, you know, you may still have an MCP server that's helping to facilitate kind of a chat with your data type function inside of a product itself.
Just, you know, kind of sits behind the scenes.
So yeah, lots of different deployment models.
I forget what the original question was, but I think it had something to do with, you know, these things being specialized and they absolutely are.
And the specialization either happens by the vendor building it for you and providing it to you, or again, kind of pulling these open source things that people have built into your own local MCP server.

What do we do if we have because you gave, you know, an example of, like, Atlassian and then stuff you're doing internally.
If we have several platforms that each have their own MCP, let's say, server, do they talk to each other or are there LMs between those?
I mean, I don't think there's any reason they couldn't be talking to each other.
I don't know if I've seen personally an example of where they're doing that, but I think if you go back to what we were talking about earlier with respect to an agent that's taking multiple actions on your behalf, almost certainly in those types of contexts, MCP could or should be involved in helping to facilitate figuring out all the different data that needs to be gathered and kind of brought into the process.
An MCP a standard open protocol for everybody to use, or is this just parts of the ecosystem they're using at this point?
对。
Yeah.
I mean, I don't know.
Standard is kind of a interesting term these days.
It's I don't
guess there's It's not there I don't to my knowledge, there is no, like, official body like the IATF or the I triple e
or There's no RFC.
C。
C.
对。
Yeah.
MCP没有RFC。
There's no RFC for MCP.
It's just Anthropic released it and said, hey.
We're doing this in the community, and it's on GitHub.
And people are sort of
And everybody can use it.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
对。
Yeah.
That's that's my understanding as well is that
Are are there competing versions of that out there?
有的。
There are.
对。
Yeah.
有
There
的。
are.
I wouldn't say competing, but there are other protocols that are emerging.
Like, has one.
Google has released a couple, I think, a two a and a p two.
I think IBM's is ACP.
And they all have sort of the general idea is the same, to try to get agents to be able to exchange information and interact, but some have, like, the a p two one from Google is more about allowing it to run make payments and run transactions on your behalf.
And others are have some like more or less, you know, security and authentication involved.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
That's a way is one that I've been looking at a little bit recently.
And yes, I think that's more back to the use model of agents talking to agents as the A2A would imply in the name.
So I think that's an example of, you know, something MCP like, which is really designed for facilitating interactions between different agents.
And MCP in its original incarnation from Anthropic was, I mean, maybe more geared towards that cloud desktop user that was trying to incorporate information from multiple applications into into something they were doing with cloud.
But they open sourced it so that anybody could make use of that.
So I know OpenAI and others are obviously adopting it as well.
And I could see it.
I mean, just like we have TCP that we use in conjunction with SSL and other things, could be running multiple protocols for AgenTeq AI down the line, I assume.
Yeah, exactly.
I mean, I think that, again, I feel like some of these these examples are overused and may not be completely accurate.
But one of the most common ones I hear about what MCP is, is like a USB a USB connection.
USB。
USB.
是的。
Yeah.
You know, you can obviously have all sorts of different things that look like USB or not USB, you know, or USB.
And we can have USB A and USB C and
all of the stupid Apple connectors.
Thunderbolt.
Doesn't quite And then, you know, yeah, all the way back to, you know, parallel ports and SCSI ports in the old days, right?
You know, there's still there's still connectors.
Basically, they're facilitating the transfer of data from point A to point B.
And yeah, so for example, we talked about authentication earlier.
Authentication is not something that's sort of natively part of that.
You know, it's something that the two things on the other end are dealing with.
But this is just basically a pipe to facilitate the data transfer.
And is a CISO in an organization and and you don't have to answer this specific to, you know, to your day job unless you want to.
But, you know, the CISO's role is you start to have, you know, development teams that are kind of figuring out how to stitch things together and connect, you know, the dots.
What what is the CISO's role?
Or is there is there a security architect or the development team typically when you have companies who who are producing, you know, software as a product, who's checking these things and making the decisions about what's safe for the organization to adopt and use?
对。
Yeah.
Again, that's not gonna be a one size fits all because obviously not every organization is big enough to have, you know, security, you know, architects, so to speak.
But that doesn't mean that, you know, we don't have people that aren't involved in the conversations.
So yeah, mean, how we're approaching it or how I think most companies that are not, you know, 50,000 people and have security teams of thousands are approaching it.
From my perspective, we have to understand the technology ourselves, right?
So how do we do that?
Well, partially we go read things, you know, we watch podcasts or whatever to learn.
But I think really the way we learn best is we actually put our hands on the technology and we do that either in conjunction with our developers that are building things or we go build our own.
And we've actually done that in my security team at Pindo.
So, you know, an intern project that we did over the summer, we actually built an MTP server to facilitate essentially one of the examples I was giving earlier where we wanted to essentially help automate kind of in a SOAR way actions based on events from different tools in our environment.
So, you know, we basically built an MCP server that could work in combination with things like Google Workspace and SIM platform, Sumo Logic.
You know, we make good progress.
Is it, you know, a 100% like, wow, this is, we're deploying it.
No, we're still working on it a little bit, but it's something that helped us learn a lot about how MCPs work.
And so as we're working with the rest of our organization and building MCPs, both in our product, as well as other MCPs, potentially for corporate uses inside of the company, we have a much better understanding of how they work and how they can go wrong, right?
Because we've actually put our hands on the technology and used it ourselves to try to solve a problem.
So that's the approach in general I've tried to take with AI is to to essentially embrace the technology and use it ourselves, find ways that we can get benefit from it, but also make sure we have a good understanding of how it can break.
And how, for context of anybody listening, how big is the organization, both the development team and then the whole company at this point?
Because you guys have been growing and growing over the years.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, I don't, yeah, I can't remember the exact number, you know, it's not quite 900 people and it's 200 and some developers and our security team, including myself is 13 people out of all of that.
200 versus 13.
Yeah, exactly.
But, you know, I've done a lot of benchmarking and those numbers are not, they're pretty commonplace.
In fact, probably on the high side for a lot of organizations.
So, within that, you know, essentially I have my team broken up into product security function, which is working directly with our developers.
Also the security operations team, which is essentially, okay, what's happening operationally in our environment and then a compliance team as the name would imply working with our auditors.
I also have the IT team, separate team that reports up through me as well.
So between my security and IT teams, that's where we're working together to make sure that for the corporate usage that we have essentially a strategy in place or that we're, this is one of those situations where the company sometimes wants to move faster than, yeah, quite frankly, I'm comfortable with.
But you know what, that's the world we live in right now.
This is if we are not aggressive and if we're not moving fast enough, it's very easy for any of us to get out innovated.
And, you know, sure, if you're a huge company, you know, you can tolerate some of those.
But you know what, if you're a 2,000 person company, you know, the threat of being out innovated is a pretty real threat.
So we need to make sure that we're, you know, we do have an advantage over, you know, the upstarts, but because we do have resources, you know, we can, you know, we can manage risk versus, you know, a five person garage company, which is just going to do the thing.
But sometimes that five person garage company is going to go build something that everybody just immediately goes to.
So, but yeah, the market can move that quickly.
So yeah, that's why we have to be aggressive in making sure that we understand how this technology works, how it breaks and how we can manage those risks in our environment, enabling our company to use the technology more quickly.
So was it the development team that said, hey, we found this MCP thing, we want to start using it and they gave you a heads up?
Or they start using it and you were sort of like poked your head and you're like, hey, what are you guys doing over there?
No, was, you know what, I don't remember where it first came up.
It wanted to first come up on the corporate side before it even came up in our product.
And it probably did.
I mean, I have to go back and look at Slack to see what the history was there.
But yeah, we do try to foster a good amount of collaboration between the teams.
Our company operates in Slack, you know, it's the community And so people kind of we have several different AI channels and most likely somebody said, hey, look at this cool thing I just heard about and, you know, is this something that we can use?
And then before long, people were actually trying to use it.
So at least we were aware And, you know, we did in some cases say, hey.
Give us a minute.
We wanna take a look and make sure we understand this a little bit more before
Well, I'm curious because it seems like based on what you've said and what I'm hearing from other places is there is sort of a top down.
We need to be on top of AI.
Let's go do it.
对。
Yeah.
So how do you as a CISO present the risks to the executives and the leaders who wanna push this while also still trying to support, you know, these these potentially move fast and break stuff initiatives?
You know, I think the danger that we face as CISOs is we don't want to become the, you know, the sky is falling person.
So because honestly, you know, we all kind of in our heads are feeling like that constantly.
And, you know, we typically wake up the next day and the sky hasn't fallen, right?
是的。
Yes.
So, you know, we somehow made it to another day.
You know, what I try to do is just be very realistic with those conversations that I'm having with other execs and just help them understand, well, you know, here's how this could go wrong.
I'm not going to say it is going to go wrong, but it's something that we're tracking and we're trying to make sure we understand.
In some cases we might ask again, could we slow down a little bit just so we make sure we understand how you know, this might play out so that we have the appropriate, you know, whatever controls that we want to put in place to help manage that risk.
In other cases, it might be, you know what, okay, we're going to acknowledge this is going to be a risk.
You know, we're going to try to monitor it, but like we're going to accept the risk and move forward.
But it's all a business conversation.
Again, part of this is relationships.
I think any CISO has to be in a mode where they're they've built strong relationships with their executive team, where they can go and have a realistic conversation.
And so it comes to the the point where if you do come with a concern that it's not, oh, yeah, it's Chuck again.
He's just going to tell me, oh, this is awful and it's, you know what, Chuck?
Actually, you know what?
He's he's an operator, you know, he's like doing this stuff.
He's built his team is building these things too.
And so he understands and is trying to make this thing right.
And if he comes to me, probably actually has a legitimate concern.
It is different when I think an organization feels like their security leadership is sitting on the same side of the table as them, not opposite them trying to just just trying to redirect every effort that they have.
So, I mean, you've you've definitely just built a good culture when it comes to that.
Yeah, yeah.
And again, that's not saying that we're by any stretch perfect, we're not.
I acknowledge that, you know, sometimes we're going to make a mistake and we're not going to, you know, we're going to miss something that we should have paid attention to that.
But more times than not, I think we, you know, we are building that culture where people are coming to us with potential concerns.
In fact, we actually, is not related to MCP's or anything, but you know, more of the agentic side of things.
So like most organizations, our developers are working with coding assistants these days.
And we've actually experimented with a lot of different ones.
And I'm not going to call one out because I don't want to play favorites or anything.
But one of our engineers, the recent NPM supply chain issues started popping a week or two ago, before that first announcement came out that morning, he alerted us to the fact that, hey, my coding agent just highlighted that this dependency I pulled in has some obfuscated code and this doesn't look right.
And so we started looking, it's like, there's nothing out there in the news about this, but yes, that is not good.
Your coding agent just found a compromised package.
We found out about it before, basically the news was hitting the street and the engineer knew enough to say, you know what, this is bad.
I'm going to go alert the security team and, you know, we're not going to push this update to prod because like that was sort of the step that was in, it was pulling in an update to an NPM package.
Like, yeah.
That's a fantastic real world story right there.
Yeah, yeah.
So coding agents, yeah, they might occasionally introduce a security problem, but you know what?
They can find them too, particularly with some of these supply chain issues.
That's really interesting.
And you've talked about kind of you know, internal relationships.
What do you what and, again, not necessarily specific because I know you you work with a lot of you know, you talked to lot of other CISOs other places.
What do you hear in terms of partners, vendors, and customers as it relates to an organization's use of AI?
Because I I personally heard stuff all over the place.
I'm just curious if there's a trend of we expect you to do this or we expect you to do it, but do it, you know, thoughtfully, or we don't want our data with you being used in this way.
What what's the trend right now?
Yeah, it's all over the place.
I would say it's trending more towards most organizations being open to AI, but yeah, we have very intentionally with our AI features gone into it with the assumption that some of our customers are not going to want to use this feature.
So in our control panel, basically every feature can be opted in or out of.
Some features we have turned on by default, some features we have them turned off by default.
And then we kind of do that based on our assessment of the risk of that particular feature.
And that risk might be, you know, what data is involved and which LLM providers, because we actually do use different LLM providers depending upon some work better for some things than others.
And some we need regionalization capabilities that some don't offer, etcetera.
So, yeah, we've basically put those controls into the hands of our customers to make that decision we understand not everybody has the same comfort level.
And we actually really started with one of our very large enterprise customers a couple of years ago.
I can't remember exactly when it's like it's all over now, but asked us, you know, what's your policy on, you know, we'd like to see you have a written policy on AI and your principles for, you know, how you're going to work with AI.
And so we said, that sounds like a great idea.
Can you share with us what you did?
And they did.
And so we kind of like, oh, this is a great starting place.
So if you look on our support site now, we actually do have a page now, very detailed.
It starts with our principles for AI usage, like, I don't know, eight or 10 principles.
I forget exactly how many.
One of them is that we're always going to put optionality in the hands of the customer that we're not going to turn things on by default.
And that not that we're not going to turn them on by default, but the ability to control
They can go
forward back off.
So yeah, and that these decisions are not in the hands of like any one person that we're going to be thoughtful in how we use this technology.
And of course, that also is not backed by a policy.
But yeah, that was all driven by some very early conversations with some of our largest enterprise customers about their concerns around AI.
And we felt like, what, a lot of companies, they don't care or they they want the new cool thing.
So they're going be good with this.
But we are trying to sell to larger enterprises and we have to listen to them and make sure that we have the appropriate gates in place to ensure that we're not putting their data at risk, not putting, or basically that we're aligned with their risk appetite.
对。
Yeah.
I guess along the same lines, you kind of talked about using different models, you talked about different people having different interests and use cases for different versions or flavors or maybe even the consumer just in general CISO ing.
How do you kinda keep an eye on what people are using and making sure that they haven't just gone rogue with, you know, their own their own models somewhere?
对。
Yeah.
That's a great question.
A lot of it is, again, just the community that we fostered within the company because people do like to share.
Even if they go rogue, they like to share that they went rogue because they've done something cool.
So again, we have places where they can go talk about the cool things they've done.
And sometimes we're like, you know what?
That's cool, but like, let's dial it back a little bit until we look at this.
You know, I mean, part of it is also trying to build some observability.
We actually, you know, one of the things our own product does is provides us some visibility to the different types of SaaS tools that our employees are using.
Our customers use Pender for the same thing.
But like it gives us some visibility into, you know, which which tools, you know, the clouds and tropics, perplexities, all those different types of tools that are being used.
I'd say cloud and anaphoric, that's the same thing.
OpenAI, you know what I meant there.
And then also we do have a data loss prevention tool that's deployed on everybody's laptop that also gives us some of the insight as well as to what they're actually using.
And of course, all of our laptops are managed.
So, you know, we have controls over which desktop agents are deployed now.
Like, there's ways all around all of this stuff, but we're trying to make sure we have at least some reasonable visibility.
对。
Yeah.
And if you have a written policy and they're educated on what they're expect is expected of them, then I'm sure they're happy to to play along with that.
没错。
Right.
Well, I know we're we're wrapping up here, but I would be remiss if I didn't at least congratulate you on an event that you had a big part in hosting, what, a week week or two ago at this point, the beat the b sides RDU here in the Raleigh area.
So do you have any now that that's sunk in for a few days, do you have any look back thoughts on how that went?
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, it's an amazing event.
I think all the B sides are, it's, you know, the B sides communities.
I mean, of them are very small.
Some of them are huge.
I guess we're, I don't know, we're probably in the middle of about 500 people showed up.
We sold out our tickets two weeks before the event.
And unfortunately, a lot of people that came to us at the last minute that wanted tickets and we're like, you know, we kind of have some limiting factors like the amount of food that we have that are hard to change.
I felt bad that we had to turn some people away, but hopefully that means next year they'll buy tickets a little bit earlier.
We also have a great group of sponsors that really helped make it all happen.
But the important thing about events like B Sides is they're driven by the community.
We are not like a pay for play speaking slot kind of conference where you know, all those speaking slots are filled up by the people, the sponsors who paid to be there.
That's not what we do at all.
So I just felt great seeing all the energy in the room, seeing all the smiling faces, getting a lot of great compliments about the sessions, including yours, CJ.
You were one of our speakers and did one of our workshops for us.
We really appreciate that.
But, yeah, just very happy to be part of that event and look for us next year on October 30.
对。
Yeah.
And there are security b sides community events all over the world and there might be 20 people at them or there might be, you know, 500 people at them.
It just depends on on the community, but definitely find one near you if you're not in our area.
It's or if there's not one, go organize one.
And I'm happy to talk to anybody who wants to, wants to hear the ins and outs of doing that.
It is a bit of work, but it's it's really worth it.
A bit of work.
I'll I'll I'll I'll I'm not gonna throw you under the bus with that one, but I watch them organizing this.
It's it's a lot of work.
对。
Yeah.
It's like if it's different if it's twenty twenty people versus 500.
So, you know, you can start small and not be too bad.
Well, Chuck, thank you for this insightful conversation, help and helping JJ and I get our feet wet around, MCP and other agentic AI protocols.
I think this is a conversation we will be having more of.
But in the meantime, are you online?
Are you blogging?
Are you YouTubing?
你玩Instagram吗?
Are you Instagramming?
你用LinkedIn吗?
Are you on LinkedIn?
What's what's your poison?
Yeah, probably the best place to find me for anything business related is Instagram.
Excuse me, not Instagram, LinkedIn.
I do have an Instagram that is awesome for like my amateur photography and things like that.
You can feel free to find me.
Which is not so amateur by the way.
Oh, nice.
That's good.
好的。
Okay.
So look, LinkedIn for business, Instagram for photography.
是的。
Yes.
Well, thank you, Chuck.
