This week, I welcomed back Sara Reusche.
Sara has a whole alphabet soup of letters after her names because she's done a whole bunch of stuff with dogs.
CBCC-KA、CPDT-KA 和 CVD。
CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, and CVD.
She also owns Paws Abilities Dog Training, LLC in Southeast Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro Area.
Sara and I talked about what we mean by the term sports lite versus sport bred, what the sports lite dog she's bred look like behaviorally, and how everyone deserves an easy dog, even those who want to do sports.
想了解更多关于萨拉的训练课程,可以访问 pawsabilitiesmn.com。

That's the Puzzle Dog Program.
So in this episode, Sara and I talked a bit about where people might go to find a sports lite dog and what kinds of questions to ask a breeder.
If you're looking for a puppy or an adult dog, I highly recommend checking out the Puppy Seekers Project.
They have a group on Facebook, which is incredibly helpful in the puppy search.
And when you get there, you can ask them about how to get specific recommendations for breeders.
If you're interested in learning more about breeders who prioritize the goals of the Functional Dog Collaborative, that is the place to go.
Welcome back, Sara.
I'm so pleased to have you here.
Let us start out.
Even though you've told us before who you live with, I know things have changed.
So why don't you fill us in on the dogs in your life?
If you wanna tell us about other creatures in your house, you certainly can do that too.
好的。
Sure.
Well, thank you so much for having me.
是的。
Yeah.
So my household has changed, I think, a little bit since last time I was on.
I have five dogs, but only live with three of them.
So I live with Han, who's nine, his daughter Biz, who's five, and Rig, who's three.
And then I also have two other dogs.
Trout is somewhere between 12 and 14 and lives with my parents now.
That's her retirement home.
And then our youngest, Iroh, is two.
Iroh, is still technically ours, but, actually my spouse's parents have him now, and I don't think we're getting him back.
Initially, they were just puppy sitting him, and that's that just keeps extending out.
Recently, they had reached out to us and said, you know, we think Iroh needs to play with his dog, Prince.
So we're gonna bring him down to visit for a couple hours.
And I was like, oh, you stole Iroh.
Okay.
He's your dog now.
So, yeah, Iroh is, still technically ours, but I think he's he's well and truly been stolen now.
And you you bred Iroh.
Is that correct?
对。
I did.
没错。
Yep.
So that's I mean, I feel like that is a testament to your breeding program where, someone who doesn't have as much dog experience as you do wants to steal one of your one of your products.
Oh, for sure.
One of your puppies.
是的。
Yeah.
His his grandparents, adore him, and they've they had one dog growing up that was a family dog, but otherwise, they're they're not really dog people.
They didn't think they were ever going to get another dog.
They truly were just puppy sitting, and, yeah, he's he's very much theirs now.
Well, that that's nice.
I I know you must miss him, but, but that's that's a nice story.
好的。
Alright.
So and I also know that you have filled us in before on what you do, but maybe just a quick overview so that just to remind people what your what your expertise is and what your background is.
Sure.
So I own Paws Abilities Dog Training, which is a reward based training company in Minnesota.
Although we serve clients all over the world, through virtual training and offer a lot of online options.
But I have two different training facilities and around, 40 people on our team who work for me.
My background is actually I I've had my hands in all of the little, pies of the dog world.
So I've worked as a shelter manager at a pit bull rescue.
I've worked in, open admission and limited admission shelters.
That's kinda where I got my start.
I'm a certified veterinary technician.
I've worked in, dog daycares and as a groomer.
And then, as a trainer, I'm a certified behavior consultant for canines through the CPDT, and also a certified professional dog trainer on knowledge and skills assessed.
Although recently, I had to drop the skills part of that, just because I couldn't find continuing education for it.
But, yeah, I've got a bunch of different fancy letters behind my name for whatever that means.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, it's nice that you have such a a broad background.
And it's interesting too, right, that you have done all this stuff and you have the shelter background, you then ended up breeding dogs, which I think for some people might be surprising.
But I'm I'm guessing there's some sort of connection there too.
So do you wanna just fill us in a little bit on how you got into breeding?
Absolutely.
对。
Yeah.
So most of my whelping experience is actually through rescue and fostering, and I still foster fairly regularly for rescues.
And my business consults with, rescues will do free support for whelping fosters, and we offer free classes for foster dogs and things like that.
But what we saw here in Minnesota is that the population of dogs coming into our basic training classes has shifted quite a bit in the twenty years I've been in business.
So when I started as a dog trainer twenty years ago, in our beginning classes, we did an orientation for just humans on the first week of class.
And then the second week of class, the first thing we did was off leash play with the dogs.
So the first time we were meeting the dogs, we did off leash play to start off every class.
And it wasn't a free for all, so we would look at who was in that class and we would decide who was going to come in in which order.
So that we started with the smaller, younger, shyer dogs, and then rotated dogs out as we got to, you know, younger or bigger or bolder dogs so that we were matching them well.
But we were able to do off leash playing every beginning class starting right away on meeting the dogs and honestly really didn't have issues with it.
It wasn't really a problem.
If you fast forward to today, I would say that the classes where we could do that would be vanishingly rare.
We might have an occasional class where that would work, but honestly, it would be such a safety risk to even try with a lot of the population of dogs that we have coming into classes now.
So just kind of the general challenge level of the dogs we have in class has shifted remarkably.
We're also seeing that in puppy classes.
So we've found that in our, puppy training classes, we're having to do a lot more behavior modification with itty bitty little puppies.
So they're coming in at, you know, eight weeks of age and already have some pretty significant fears or pretty significant dog dog things going on.
So that's been it's been a big challenge seeing how the dog population has shifted.
And a lot of that is just because the the dogs that are coming into pet homes aren't as easy to live with now.
So you felt like you might be able to contribute to providing more dogs who are easier to live with?
是的。
Yeah.
And I started doing that with, fostering and and raising dogs, walking dogs for rescues, and then, kind of expanding into breeding as well just because I feel really strongly that dogs should be easy and that the the average pet home should be able to enjoy dogs.
You know, it should be really hard to screw up a dog.
You should have to work pretty hard at it.
And if you're getting dogs who already have a lot of behavioral concerns as little puppies, it's not something dogs grow out of.
I don't know.
Can you hear the barking in the background?
好的。
Okay.
对。
Yep.
That's our neighbor dog.
I'm actually gonna text them and see if they'll bring him in.
But he's he's kind of a good case of A
是的。
good example of this kind of thing?
对。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
Big dog.
He came up from, I think, Alabama as a puppy and had some pretty significant fear and reactivity even as a little puppy coming up right away.
对。
Mhmm.
And we do a lot of management now with, when our dogs can be out in the yard, so that they're Oh, that's hard.
是的。
Yeah.
They're not having issues with him at the fence.
是的。
Yeah.
Transport is important and good, but also I think can be really hard on puppies sometimes.
Not to say that that's why that happened to that dog, but could have been could have been a factor.
Right?
Can contribute.
是的。
Yeah.
And it it's tough because, obviously, we want to here in Minnesota, we have a shortage of dogs.
I've talked about that on this podcast before.
对。
Mhmm.
And so we we wanna be able to help areas that have too many dogs that need homes.
But, yeah, it's a tough line of how we do that ethically in a way that's kind and fair to the dogs.
没错。
Right.
So I'm I'm I keep being tempted to follow certain lines of questioning and remembering that we've been there before.
So I did have you on this time to talk about specifically breeding sports lite dogs, and I know that your first litter or two, or particularly your Cavalier Crosses, right, were just very ended up being very sweet, easy dogs.
And then you ended up having slightly spicier dogs in the next litter.
So maybe could you talk about, like, why did you end up going in that direction with the with the more recent litter?
是的。
Yeah.
So, both litters were bred for the same purpose, to be easy first time or, like, hobbyist level sport dogs.
With the Cavaliers, I was also obviously hoping to potentially bring some healthy heart genes into the cavalier population.
当然。
And Sure.
If those dogs mature nicely, hopefully, can use them for back crossing, use them for out crossing programs, things like that.
Just because cavaliers are such lovely dogs behaviorally, and it would be so nice to have cavaliers that were living longer without heart issues.
But the the sport makes litter, the second litter that I bred, was also very much these dogs are are going to be pets first.
And I feel like that's that's what most people want even if you're competing in sports and you're really into dog stuff.
The time that you're spending actually competing with a dog is pretty minor compared to the amount of time you're living with that dog, that you're hanging out with that dog.
And so my my primary goal is that these are dogs that are easy to live with, that aren't going to be complicated, that aren't going to be easy to screw up, that don't have really high daily enrichment needs.
Because that's that's our modern society.
That's the dogs that we need.
对。
Yeah.
And so I've been calling dogs like that sports lite.
How would we how would you compare that to, you know, when you go on Facebook and you see dogs advertised as being sport bred?
Like, what's what's the difference between that and to and what you're producing?
I I know it can be a little it's a little bit of a tricky question because we don't wanna sound like like what other people are doing is bad or wrong.
对。
Right.
But it's also, I think, important to to be clear about what the differences are.
是的。
Yeah.
So I'm going to use, two of my dogs as examples.
And I'll I'll start with Biz who's the girl that I've I've bred and I'm planning one more litter for her.
But she's the mom to the two litters I just discussed.
Biz is what I would consider kind of the perfect sport lite dog.
So she's a dog that would smooth really easily into a lot of different homes.
She would do just fine as, you know, the pet to an eight year old boy living out on a farm, and they'd go get muddy together and catch crawfish.
And she'd also do just fine as a pet to a retired woman who wanted to sit on the couch and watch her soaps and maybe do a quick little tootle around the block.
And, you know, Biz would be ottoman shaped.
If she did that, she would definitely pee obese, but she would be she would do well in that lifestyle.
So she's a dog who's very easy to train.
She likes doing stuff with me, but she doesn't need to do things with me.
And I think that's kind of what sets apart the the idea of a sports lite dog versus a dog who has to do sports to be fulfilled.
Biz
Biz doesn't need sports to be fulfilled.
She'd be perfectly happy with a pet dog lifestyle.
That's the primary, you know, day to day life that she lives.
And I'll contrast that to, my three year old, Rig.
Rig
So Rigg is a sport bred dog.
She has very winning, lines.
So if you look back at, her relatives, they're kicking butt in fly ball all over Europe and really successful in dock diving and disc and agility and all the sports.
They're incredibly keen, incredibly easy to train, but she's also really tough to live with.
And she's actually she's getting spayed for that and a couple other reasons.
But her day to day needs are just much higher.
So she is not a dog where I can have a sick day and not give her things.
She needs physical and mental exercise every single day or it's just really, really tough to live with her and she has a hard time.
Her quality of life is really dependent on getting that individual physical and mental exercise every single day.
So with her, there's not days off.
That's that's kind of some of the background of where I've come from working with working dogs, so working with different, police departments.
And when I worked at the pit bull rescue, we had a lot of dogs who were like this that are just kinda a little bit more.
And certainly, those dogs are keen to do sports and very talented at sports, but it comes with that little bit of extra edge.
Right?
And that can be tough if this isn't everything you do.
So if you have a life outside of dog sports and outside of your dogs, which honestly, I don't know what that's like, but, I assume that that's the reality for most people, then a dog like rig is just going to be trickier to make sure that you're meeting their needs.
Did that
I mean, you and I both need yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
I think well, you and I are good examples.
Right?
So we we you and I both need sick days from time to time.
I don't I don't need sick days necessarily every single week at this point, but when I need one, I really need one.
So thank god for thank god for spouses, and thank god for dog walkers who I pay an ungodly amount of money to.
Or or I and I did when I had the dog who could not take a day off.
We were spending a thousand dollars a month on dog walkers.
So, I sympathize with that.
And then even though dogs are in a lot of ways my whole life, I even so, sometimes I need to be on the computer prepping a webinar or working on the data platform or whatever it is.
Right?
And that's still a dog thing, but it isn't a interacting with my dog, and sometimes I need to be able to do that too.
没错。
So Right.
It's it's important.
What so do you think that there are consequences?
So if you breed a dog who's a good pet, does that make them not able to do sports, or does it make them less fun at sports?
Or, like, what's the trade off there?
So I have strong opinions about this, and, I'm not sure everybody would agree.
I think that a lot of the traits that we breed for with, pet dogs make dogs really successful sport dogs.
And I think there's this kind of myth.
There's this sacred cow that if you don't have a dog that's leaking drive, that they don't have drive.
But I'm I don't agree with that.
I I don't think that's actually the case.
So I think that being a pet dog is one of the hardest jobs that we can ask our dogs to do.
Being able to tolerate not getting a lot in terms of physical or mental activity every day is something that I think also translates to being a successful sport dog.
Because if you have a dog who's got, say, a natural off switch where they can relax and settle on their own without having to build that in, That's also a dog who's probably going to be able to relax more easily in say a trial set.
I was just thinking that.
是的
Yeah.
If you're traveling for shows, Biz is my best travel dog.
She's just easy.
She's happy in the car.
She's happy to, arrive at the hotel.
She's not reactive at anything.
So in the hotel, if there's a lot of noise, she's just going to sleep and rest, and then she's well rested the next day.
And so she's not wearing herself out before we go into the ring.
She's able to rest in her crate.
She's able to sleep.
And I feel like those are important things for our working trial dogs too.
是的。
Yeah.
当然。
For sure.
I I think I also see on in the sports groups and, the sports education platforms, a lot of discussion of how to bring your dog down with the assumption that there's a lot of sport dogs that are really over the top a lot of the time and not so much discussion about how to build motivation.
Whereas I feel like, well, if you're gonna have to do one or the other, maybe if you put your time into building motivation, but then you're not peeling the dog off the ceiling when you're trying to go bed go to bed at night, that might be a better approach.
是的。
Yeah.
And, honestly, I I don't think it's an either or either.
So I think that, you can have dogs who are very motivated and also have that natural off switch.
And so I'm not having to say build motivation in my dogs.
They're already really happy to work for food or for toys or for personal play or for the opportunity to go pee on that mailbox over there.
There are already dogs who are easy to motivate it, and they are dogs who like doing stuff with their people, which makes things easy.
What do you think the characteristics are that you're breeding for that make dogs like doing I mean, is is just liking doing things with my person something that you breed for, or is it some like, is it bitability, human sociability?
Like, what are you what are you selecting for?
Do you know?
是的
Yeah.
There's there's a few things that I think, I'm selecting for.
And I say a thing I'm selecting for because genetics are so complicated.
And, who knows?
Am I building this from the time they're little puppies and I'm doing individual training sessions with them, or were they going to be like this anyway?
And your program's new relative to this kind of thing.
If you were a couple decades in, it might you might know more.
没错。
Exactly.
是的。
Yeah.
But I think that generally, what I'm selecting for our dogs who have that natural off switch, but also are socially motivated.
So they they like doing things with their person because they like being with their person.
And I think that social motivation and just kinda general sociability is a big part of what makes a dog easy to train.
I have terrier mixes, so they're not necessarily what you would think of as bittable in the same way that say a sporting or a herding breed might be biddable, but there's still dogs that, gosh, they like doing stuff with their people.
I have often said that I want a sports lite dog and I don't want to necessarily compete on world team.
Do you feel that I mean, you've you're making the argument, which I believe that it was appropriate selection.
You can produce dogs that are easy in the home and motivated to compete in sports and do well.
Do do you think there's a limit to how far they can go?
Do you think everybody could be breeding dogs like this, or do you think that if you really do wanna compete at the top of the sport, you're gonna be working with a different type of dog?
That's a great question, and I don't know.
是的。
Yeah.
Didn't warn you about that one ahead of time because I just thought of it.
没有。
No.
I I don't know.
I when I look at the dogs who are competing, at kind of a national level, at that podium level, I think that you are probably breeding for some degree of reactivity.
Reactivity, when I say that word, gosh, that's gonna get people's hackles up.
What I'm talking about is fast reactions to changes.
So these dogs that can kind of adjust on the fly instantaneously, and who might kind of bring things gosh.
I'm trying to think of how to word this.
The dogs who are going to have that little bit of edge, I feel like does bring a competitive advantage at that top level.
And also, I would argue that there's vanishingly few handlers that are competing at that level.
And so the number of dogs that we're currently producing at that level are honestly just having tougher lives because if they're not getting that daily physical and mental exercise, then they're having a hard time.
I was actually just thinking that I should ask you about the welfare implications of it.
And so you just suggested that it's hard to keep up with their needs.
But I wonder having I mean, the dog that I lived with was not a sport bred dog.
He had he shared some traits in common and some traits very much not in common.
But even when I met his needs, he had welfare issues.
And I don't I wonder if the same is true of the very high level sport dogs.
And I think, again, we're sort of getting into dangerous territory here because I don't wanna be criticizing other people's choices.
But just as sort of a thought experiment, I wonder if even when you meet their needs, if just living at the level of having that much how did I'm trying to remember what words you used.
Not exactly motivation, but those those sort of fine tuned responses to your environment.
Like, is that itself an issue potentially?
A lot of the working bred dogs that I've worked with, it is an issue.
And I'm going to use Rig as an example again, and I wanna be really careful about using Rig as an example, so I'm gonna preface that.
So Rig is from a breeder who breeds four sports.
They have a couple decades of sport breeding experience and produce really nice dogs.
I actually went to this breeder because I love their program.
I love their lines, and I love the dogs that they produce that I've met.
Riggs litter was a little bit of an anomaly for their program, and so this isn't typical of the dogs they breed because breeding is complicated.
Right?
当然。
Sure.
It's you yes.
If it was if it was the same every time, we'd be selling them at Walmart.
没错。
Right.
没错。
Right.
And so I I don't want it to make I don't wanna make it sound like I'm, saying anything bad about their program because I'm not, and I would get another dog from them in a heartbeat.
But Rig is kind of that extreme edge of what they're breeding, and that is something that I think we have to think about if we're breeding for that sport ability and that amount of drive and that amount of kind of emotional, and physical reactivity where they can adjust really quickly to changes.
You might have a couple dogs in the litter who are exactly what you need to be podium level.
But it's also likely that you're going to have a couple dogs who aren't, who are a little bit less, and that's great.
You can you can place those puppies with somebody who's looking to compete pretty competitively at maybe the local level.
But then you're also likely to get a couple of puppies in that litter who are more extreme.
And then what do you do with those puppies?
Yeah.
That's that's the hard question, isn't it?
I I'm remembering.
So when I went out to talk at your facility, this it was this July, wasn't
it?
是的。
Yeah.
Towards June or something?
对。
Yeah.
And we all sat around, and you you guys told some hilarious stories about your dogs.
And I feel like the story that you told about Rig is a really good illustration of what she's like.
So the story do you do you know what story I'm about to I don't.
To prompt you to tell?
There's a lot of great stories.
Had to do with you being passed out as oh, no.
Your assistant's being passed out asleep after helping with puppies, and Rick was going for a run.
对。
Yes.
Yeah.
So this was when we were preparing for business last litter.
So we knew that she was going to start labor sometime in the next twenty four hours.
She had had a temperature drop, which is generally indicative that labor is going to start within twenty four hours.
So we were on Puppy Watch and I had a couple of friends over who were helping with Puppy Watch.
They both lay down to take a nap.
And I thought, okay, well, this is a good opportunity for me to wear a rig out because this is gonna be Puppies are coming.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
We've got puppies coming.
It's gonna be tough for Rig.
Let's get some of her physical needs taken care of.
And so I was going to let her run alongside the bike, which is one of her favorite things.
And what I forgot, because I was also sleep deprived waiting for puppies, is that Riggs' excitement level for running alongside the bike leaks out in just the most ungodly scream ever.
And so as we're getting ready to bike, she is screaming.
And it's the kind of scream so my two friends who were over both woke up from a sound sleep to a dog screaming, bolted out of bed thinking she had, like, gotten hung up on a fence and, like, degloved a foot or something from the scream that she was screaming.
And it was just that she was so happy, excited to be running alongside the bike.
And so the first about minute of any bike run with her is just her screaming.
And then she settles into running and runs really nicely and is really fulfilled, but that scream woke them up and in just a complete panic thinking that a dog was literally dying.
And that's like The the definition of big feelings.
Right?
没错。
Yes.
Rig
Everything everything's big with Rig.
Yes.
Whereas your stories about Biz involved, her getting into things and eating too much.
Sorry.
对。
Yeah.
Been
we're talking about naughtiness.
It's gonna be stuff like and, you know, she doesn't even really counter surf, but things like catching a bunny in the yard and bringing it in through the dog door to eat it in our house.
You know?
Is that fun?
不算。
No.
She's a terrier.
She's a terrier.
But you're right.
I I expect some of that with terriers.
是的。
Yeah.
And it doesn't have the same welfare implications that, someone like Rick has where she she really is pretty miserable if I'm not making an effort to meet her needs.
I'm actually gonna give you another example with, the two young dogs, Rig and Iroh.
So we we had teenagers back to back to back, which I don't recommend.
Wouldn't do it again.
So Iroh's now two and Rig is three.
We're just kinda getting past that teenager.
Oh, it's nice.
But the other day, I was looking at what I've trained the two young dogs to do.
And Rigg knows probably over a 100 tricks and behaviors, trained pretty close to fluency for most of them, on verbal and, verbal cues and hand signals and for a variety of sports.
And she's not a dog I do a lot of competing with because the trial environment is tough for her because she does have big feels.
Like I said, she's kind of that extreme edge of when you're breeding for sports, you're going to get a couple puppies that are more than.
Right?
没错。
Sure.
So she she only competes in a couple things.
She competes in disc and coursing because she can do those successfully, but knows a million things.
And then I have Iroh who's two and he can recall and he can walk on a leash.
He's house trained and crate trained and that's kinda it.
I mean, to be fair, your parents in law stole him from you.
没错。
But Right.
对。
Right.
But even then
But you didn't need to.
Right?
Is your point.
Knew.
对。
Right.
I didn't have to do any training with him.
He really doesn't need to know things because he's easy enough to live with and he's happy.
So he doesn't need that to be fulfilled in his day to day life.
Providing for Iroh's needs is much simpler.
His life with his grandparents is, a few walks a day, and he gets to see neighbor dogs sometimes, and he gets to see neighbors sometimes.
He plays fetch.
He can kinda demand fetch whenever he wants, and his grandparents are happy to do it.
But it's not like he's asking for hours and hours of fetch every day.
Right?
He's happy to chase the ball a few times and then to sleep on their lap.
And so he just doesn't know as much because he doesn't need to know as much.
And I I would like to ask what's does he do sports?
But I'm guessing since he's they've absconded with him, he doesn't.
Maybe biz is a better example.
Do you do sports with biz?
So, actually, Iroh, I think he needs one or two more queues to get his kind of first course in title week course in because that, asphalt allows for intact mixes, whereas like AKC Fast Kept
Does not.
对。
Mhmm.
So he's he's close to that.
I think he's got a couple Up Dog awards, which is disc.
He certainly he's probably ready for, like, CGC spot, kind of the the pet obedience tests.
I'd have to teach him this day, but that's not gonna be hard.
And then he's ready to compete in barn hunt if I'm ever able to steal him back for a couple trials.
So, yeah, he he does some things.
He just hasn't needed the same level of training.
Biz competes in, rally obedience, disc horsing, and is ready to compete in dock diving when I have the the time and finances to do it.
That's a lot.
So we should not neglect talking about the physical aspect of breeding for sports.
Do you have thoughts about physically what they what their structure should look like, or what kinds of questions do you ask yourself when you're making those decisions?
是的。
Yeah.
So I know that structure is not my strongest suit.
I'm continuing to learn more about it.
And so for that, I have a really good sports medicine vet, and I've just asked her a million questions about what I should be looking for in specifically in breeding partners.
So if this is the bitch that I have, what traits should I be prioritizing in a stud physically to make sure that I'm producing sound puppies?
And my general so generally, what I'm looking for, structure wise are fairly moderate dog shaped dogs.
And so when I describe the puppies that I'm breeding, I'm looking for a dog that doesn't necessarily look like a breed, if that makes sense.
So a lot of our breeds, you can tell that they're ex breed because of a trait that's different from the general dog population.
And my goal with the dogs that I'm producing is that you look at them and go, that's a nice dog.
That just that doesn't look like anything in particular.
They're very moderate in terms of angulation and muzzle length and a back length and coat.
I'm not particularly fussed about coat type or ear set or tails or color beyond, things that might have implications, like if we have I've produced some high white puppies, and so being careful that I'm not continuing to select high white puppies for my breeding program and then potentially have the issues with, say, deafness later down the line.
But beyond that, yeah, I'm I'm not too fussed about that.
很好。
Nice.
So if people are looking for dogs of this type, are there aside from following your breeding program, obviously, are there other places for people to go?
Are there a fair number of breeders out there at this point sort of with similar goals to yours, do you think?
One of the things that I love the most about the Functional Dog Collaborative is that I feel like that's becoming a good place for those of us who have similar breeding goals to kinda meet and to support one another and, build our programs.
And so that's that's probably where I would send people is to talk to other breeders who are members of the FDC who are kind of thinking along the same lines.
The biggest thing that I think there's there are a lot of sport breeders who have a lot of dogs, And the number of dogs that an individual can care for in a way that really puts welfare first is going to depend on that person.
So it's it's not going to be based on a number.
It's I know that I do well with, just a few dogs in my household because I do have chronic illness, and I do need to have weeks where I'm not really doing a lot with my dogs.
But other people might be able to provide for the needs of dogs, with quite a few more dogs than I can.
That said, I think that dogs who are in households where the dogs primarily either live in crates or kennels or kind of rotating setups where maybe they're spending, half their day in a yard with a group of dogs and then the other half of their day, you know, in the dog room.
I I don't think you're going to get as much information about whether those parents are the sort of dogs that you would want to live with as a pet.
And so when I'm looking into bringing a dog into my household or when I'm advising people to get a puppy, my biggest recommendation is to find parent dogs who live lives that are very similar to yours because you know they're successful living those lives.
And so I'm going to specifically be looking for dogs that are living in the house, free in the house, not, you know, crated in the house or in one room or having to be tethered or managed in some way.
But I wanna see that both mom and dad are pets first and maybe my dogs sleep in bed with me.
So are the parent dogs sleeping in bed with their people?
That's something that's important to me because I enjoy it and I don't want to have to manage bedtime with my dogs.
I'm lazy.
I don't wanna have to worry about that.
I'm also going to look at things like, are the parent dogs successful going out in public?
Because that's something I want to do with my dogs.
So I want to have dogs that are easy to travel with, that I can pop them in the car and we can drive across the country and stay at hotels and stop at rest stops, and it's not going to be something where I'm going to have to think about it a lot or manage or plan for it.
And so I'm going to specifically select parent dogs who are successful doing those things that they can go to, like, the local festival where there's, a bunch of drunk people and a bunch of pet dogs on leash and kids everywhere, and the dog's just like, okay.
Cool.
That sounds lovely.
It's, it's funny from a lot of the dogs that I've lived with.
It feels like a really big ask, but it sounds like you have found it to be doable in your program.
Certainly, I think that it's something that is somewhat, breed dependent.
Right?
And so I know that you love your herding breeds.
是的。
I do.
They're very sensitive.
没错。
Yeah.
When we're selecting dogs to be successful at herding, we're selecting dogs who are going to notice things that are different and who are going to be very aware of personal space bubbles.
And those things don't those traits don't preclude a dog from being a easy, social, lovely pet.
But certainly that means that as a handler, then you're going to have just a little bit more work.
Right?
没错。
Mhmm.
Being able to explain to them as a young dog and socialize them that, yes, sometimes people act weird, and it's it's not your problem to deal with dog, versus my terriers are just like, yeah, sometimes people act weird, and isn't that cool?
It's a funny world.
Yeah.
I, I have a a herding dog next to there's a bed next to me, and he's he's sprawled out right now, but he definitely, from time to time, notices differences in his environment.
So what have I what have I not asked you about that I should ask you about?
Gosh.
That's a great question.
I think we've
I feel like we've covered it.
We've covered it for the most part.
Do you wanna talk about any of your litters specifically to sort of highlight some of the stuff that you've done in this area?
So I think that another piece here's something we haven't talked about is, the breeder's role and then the the pet owner's role in having this, kind of sport lite dog and then maybe what, my ideal homes are.
So help me remember to talk about all of that.
But so the breeder's role, to me is that they're they're setting their puppies up for success from before the litter's even planned.
So, again, selecting those parents, both of the studs that I've used with business litters have been dogs who are pets first, who live in the home.
Their primary purpose is as a pet, and then they also do other things.
So the stud for the Cavalier Outcross Litter is a working therapy dog.
And so he visits the hospital every week and loves his job.
He loves getting his little vest on, because it means he's gonna get to go visit and be professionally petted, which is his favorite thing in life.
Hate to be petted.
It sounds great.
对。
Yeah.
He's like, this is this is what I was put on earth to do.
And actually, I'm gonna break on his daughter, Coraline, actually just passed her therapy dog evaluation with Delta Pet Partners.
Nice.
At the age of two, she just passed that with her mom, JCL.
And I was talking to a friend of mine and saying that, I don't know, if I was in the hospital and I got visited by JCL and Coraline, it it would cure me instantly.
Such a sunshiny little dog.
But that's that's the first stud.
And then the second stud that I use Fender is also a family pet first, and then he also competes in fly ball and in dock diving.
And so he does also do sports, but his primary purpose is that he's a member of the family.
对。
Yeah.
So I think that setting your dogs up for success in selecting, and then as a breeder, just kinda socialization and environmentally, things like exposing puppies early on to the idea that I can do fun things with a person one on one.
So doing individual training sessions with puppies, I mean, I start taking puppies away from the well-being box as soon as Bizza lets me, as soon as mom lets me, and just carrying puppies around the house.
We go on little field trips to the bathroom, and we go on little field trips to the laundry room, and, you know, they're just going places where they're just exploring new things with me, teaching them to be enrichment seekers and novelty seekers, so exposing them to a wide variety of, sounds and sights and surfaces and smells.
And then, getting them out and about is, I think, really important if you're looking at a dog who might be a sport dog in the future because they're going to see more things in their life than the average pet dog.
Right?
And so making sure that those litters of puppies are going out.
We have a little puppy stroller.
And so they're doing things like going out to Sonic and sitting out at Sonic and watching the cars go past and meeting people and maybe getting a little pup cup.
Or they're going out to Shields and they're seeing the taxidermied animals.
And our local Scheels has a little, like, Ferris wheel inside and a little golly alley, and animatronic people that talk, like, lots of weird stuff.
But they're getting to see that stuff before their brains are really able to process fear yet because developmental puppies don't process fear until, closer to around seven weeks.
And so it it all just becomes normalized.
Except for the herding breeds who start doing it at five weeks.
对。
Right.
没错。
Yeah.
I I also I was remembering you were talking about the differences in in the two litters business, two litters that, the later litter, I remember you were saying they were crawling out of their pens much earlier and taking themselves on expeditions.
Oh, dear god.
Yeah.
The the cavalier litter were potatoes until they went home.
There really wasn't a lot of concern about them, like, escaping their, weeding pen or things like that.
And then the more sporty mixed litter, definitely were out and about exploring much sooner.
At, like, two weeks, there were That's so young.
是的。
Yeah.
There were sounds of puppy just
I could just barely see.
对。
Right.
Their eyes, I their ears weren't even open yet.
And one of the puppies climbed her siblings like a ladder and plunked out of the whelping box, and I heard pop sounds of puppy distress and went running, and she was just, like, stomping towards me screaming, really, really upset that she wasn't in with her sibling.
I'm like, well, you did that.
So, yeah, when you came out to visit for the seminar, at my training place in June, I know that the Friday that you arrived, the puppies had escaped their weaning pen.
And I'd had to redo their entire weaning pen, like, in the middle of seminar setup while crying.
当然。
Of course.
Did so did you see have you seen a lot of behavioral differences between the two litters as they got older?
Like, did that did that track through the differences that you saw when they were younger?
I would say that the the more sporty mixed litter, they are just they're physically more able.
So the cavalier mixes are cavalier mixes.
And certainly, they're they're still very athletic dogs, but they they just aren't ever going to be as talented at using their bodies as the the dogs who have generations of mixy mix sporty breeding behind them.
But in terms of things like off switches and being able to be successful in pet homes, they're very comparable.
We have different so there's there's no perfect dog, and we have different behavioral challenges with both litters.
So with the cavalier mixed litter, the the biggest thing that we see is there's some touch sensitivity.
And so they're nudists.
They don't particularly like putting on clothes, even though they're short coated and they get cold.
That's sad for you because you really like the big pretty collars.
是的。
Yeah.
Luckily, collars are pretty okay.
But Okay.
Things
like putting But not coats.
Harness.
对。
Yeah.
Putting on coats.
It's just they don't like wearing things.
And then the, more sporty mixed litter, we had a little bit more sound sensitivity.
So when we were doing puppy evaluations, one of the things that's done is, there's a loud noise.
So there's, like, a can that has a bunch of pennies in it that gets dropped, and you see how the puppies respond.
And these guys kind of frayed a little bit with that.
We actually had to take a break from the puppy evals for a couple of them for a little snuggle break to get them back.
And so that was a lot more sensitivity to that than I had seen, with Biz or with Biz's siblings or with the cavalier mixed litter, who are pretty bomb proof about loud sounds.
The cavalier mixed litter is actually like, you start vacuuming, and they're like, oh, that's my jam, and wanna follow you around while you're vacuuming, you know, things like that.
That sounds nice.
Did you did you place the different litters with different types of owners?
没有。
No.
They're they're all placed in kind of my ideal.
So that actually brings me to talking about my my ideal, puppy homes are either, first time dog sport people.
So somebody who's maybe either they've grown up with dogs and they're getting their first dog.
Maybe they did like four h with their childhood dog, but this is their first dog as an adult.
Or, they've had dogs that they've done sports with, but they've never gotten a dog to do sports with.
You know, they they had a dog and then they got into agility or fly ball or disc or whatever.
Those are kind of my ideal people.
Or, pet homes.
Again, I feel like there's a really big need for dogs who are successful in pet homes.
We ask a lot of our pets these days.
And so, I love placing dogs in homes where they're going to live with kids.
I think that having as a as a kid growing up with a dog that enjoys you and enjoys doing stuff with you makes such a difference in people's lives.
是的。
Yeah.
And so I like that.
I'm not looking for homes that want, like, the next big competition dog because I feel like there's plenty of breeders who are producing dogs really successfully for that, and that's not my priority.
My priority is pet first, but also dogs who will be successful at a hobbyist level.
Certainly, you're it's going to be easy enough to train them to do whatever sports you wanna do.
是的。
Yeah.
But it's not their primary purpose.
对。
Yeah.
Perfect.
I will say with the second litter, one of the puppies is placed in a home where she's their first dog.
哇。
Wow.
是的。
Yeah.
They're they're doing a lovely job with her, and she's delightful.
And I keep getting, the best pictures of her snuggling with her two kitty housemates.
Well, one kitty housemate.
One is still kind of figuring out whether she's acceptable in this household.
But snuggling with the kitty housemates and, meeting friends' kids and going on adventures together.
And that's really as a breeder, that's what brings me the most joy is placing those puppies in homes where they're a member of the family like that.
是的
Yeah.
真好
That's lovely.
Well, I'm really glad that your program exists.
所以
So
Well, thank you.
不客气
You're welcome.
是的
Yeah.
I'm glad that I'm glad that people are more able to find each other the Functional Dog Collaborative, but I also I've just been really excited seeing all the different programs that are springing up, and all the the cool dogs, all the sort of slight differences, but all with these very similar goals of having dogs that fit well into homes but also really enjoy doing things that aren't just potatoes.
是的。
So Yeah.
It's nice.
It's lovely.
And I think that as as the FTC grows and as pet owners start asking more questions about, or puppy seekers start asking more questions about what the parents' dog life look like, we're going to start seeing more people focusing specifically on kind of this niche that is so important.
We we just people deserve nice dogs.
People deserve easy dogs.
Dogs should be enjoyable.
Right?
It should be really hard to mess up a dog.
是的。
Yeah.
