Welcome, James.
James Martin, also known as madebyjames on the internet.
It is so good to have you here.
I feel like most people listening to this will already know you because you've built up a brilliant community online and things.
But for those who don't know you, perhaps maybe a little introduction to yourself would be a good place to start.
That's that's always a good place to start.
And I think you...
I think we can all fall into the trap that somebody who is Internet famous is actually known, isn't it?
So I don't think...
Maybe not everybody will probably know who I am.
There's one thing I used to love that Snoop Dogg said.
Was it being famous on Instagram is like being rich at monopoly?
Do know what I mean?
It's always something that's stuck in my head.
It is so true.
So, yeah, for me, long story short, my name is James Martin.
As you mentioned, I have built a reputation around the name madebyjamesonline.
I'm a designer, author, and very much enjoy educating my fellow colleagues in the creative world to try and help them design their own way.
And I'm a big believer in the fact that there's not one right way to do anything, especially build a business or be creative.
So that's something I'm very passionate about is trying to help people find their kind of unique voice and lean in and take action and build opportunity for themselves and all the rest of it.
Obviously teach through the things that I still do, John.
Mean, so I'm not teaching from arm's length for...
I'm in the trenches with people still running a studio, still being a creative, still doing all the things.
So I think that's very important.
I'm on the design advisory board at Canva.
I'm a creative partner at Lincoln Design Co where we work with the likes of Disney, Mattel, Paramount and lots of other cool people.
I'm a bit of a collector, builder.
Do know what I mean?
As you can probably tell from all the taps behind me.
It's not a tat actually.
It's very good.
I shouldn't I shouldn't call it tat because I spent a lot of time and effort building it.
And, yeah, just just another creative human trying to find his way whilst also trying to continue to have fun in a world where it's easy to be distracted by the stuff that isn't fun.
That is very true.
I think it's probably never been more distracting than where we are now.
就像……
Like the...
In the world.
A 100%.
Like I think I think one of the keys to any creative business or any human trying to build a business around their creativity or their craft or whatever it is or even just outside of creativity.
It's your probably your ability to avoid the traps and remove the distractions and not get too hung up on everything that's going around you that will allow you to be the success that you can be.
I think when you find yourself as worried too much about what's going on over here or doing what that person says even though you don't quite agree with it or make this much money in a week or like 10,000 an hour or like a $100 or something.
Like, I always like to think that it's amazing how all these people have such round numbers that they make every single month, isn't it?
It's always exactly 10 k.
Like, not 9,220.
It's exactly 10 k because it's all bollocks, mate.
That's what
没错。
it is.
Know I mean?
没错。
Exactly.
You failed because you are not as good as me even though I have no proof that I am telling the truth.
Do know what I mean?
所以……
So...
But let me stand in front of this car that I don't own and take a picture just so you think it's mine.
That's the world we're in now, isn't it?
It also ended up being easier to bullshit.
I think that's part of the joy of Instagram is that it's easy to just make it up.
It's so incredibly easy.
Incredibly easy.
But I think people's tolerance for bullshit is going.
Do know what I mean?
I think we...
I think especially with, I don't know how old you are.
I'm not gonna ask Katie, but, know, I'm...
I was born in 1983.
So I grew up in a world that was like void of social media and really any Internet.
Do you know what I mean?
When I was a wee baby, do what I mean?
There was Internet, but like, it wasn't very good, especially where I live in the middle of the countryside.
Dial up.
Even like now my Internet is absolute dog shit.
Do you what I mean?
And it's 2026.
Do you know what I mean?
So it's it's bad.
But I think it's...
Yeah, I think we I think we rode a kind of quite exciting wave when Steve Jobs built the app, the iPhone.
I don't think he realized then the problems he would cause.
Do know what I mean?
Because if you think about the matters, if you think about the AI and you think about all these things, they can only happen because we carry around these little devices.
So it's actually Steve Jobs' fault if you think about it.
So bless him, God bless his soul.
But but yeah, I think we did ride this wave, didn't we?
When it was all exciting in this kind of interconnected world and meet up with your old mates and stalk them and see what they're doing in today's world.
What food are they eating on Facebook?
Oh, who knows?
Like, what a lovely picture of their dog.
Do you know mean?
That used to be the innocence of social media but now it's very much changed.
And also now with the injection of our friend AI it's very difficult to know whether the thing you're even seeing is true or real, which again is another layer of crazy.
So, yeah, I think the toleration, you know, tolerance of bullshit is definitely going.
I think you can see people are just a little bit sick of it.
Now that's not to say you shouldn't show up and market yourself and do it in a way that feels right to you.
I'm a big believer in leaning into that because I wouldn't be doing the things I'm doing without sharing myself or sharing my work or my process.
So yeah, it's...
John, it's just trying to find the balance in this new world because it's gonna change again tomorrow, isn't it?
So what worked yesterday It
really is.
It's changing all that like every five minutes it feels like, but it's so good.
So I think it's interesting to see cause a snapshot of today, like you've got like over 900,000 followers on Instagram and you're on the board of like affinity and Canva and things.
I would love to know like what got you here?
Like what was your journey into design and how did that look?
How far do you wanna go back?
哦。
Oh.
I had
a quick look at it.
Know you had an interesting time at school and things.
I think I think I'm a big believer in being an open book because hopefully it allows others to feel that they can communicate and talk to people as well.
And I think I think, yeah, it's easy to look at what's happening now, but there's always a journey to stuff, isn't there?
Mean, boy, we talked about Scotland a minute ago, didn't we?
Or you not being quite two miles away from Scotland.
Do you what I mean?
But my my grandfather been Scottish.
He had a nice little chinwag about that.
但是……
But...
So, you know, grew up happy little boy, generally, you know, quite sporty, not very...
What would we call it.
I wasn't very good in the system in the regards of education because I wasn't very clever.
And when I was a wee boy, being a creative was very much still at that stage where it was like have fun painting but you can't make a job out of it.
There's no career out of it.
Go and be a doctor or a lawyer or an accountant or whatever.
It's funny how it's all changed now, isn't it?
So yeah, so I was always very arty.
Not very good.
Do know what mean?
But it's definitely something that I enjoyed more than math or science or whatever.
It's a very sporty little boy.
And, you know, like I said, it was always very, very creative.
But I had I had...
Like, I was unfortunately, and you're probably gonna have to put some sort of like warning on this podcast, but I was I was sexually abused at the age of 11 by my maths teacher.
And that that threw me threw me off a very bad on a kind of bad tangent, bad course, whichever way you wanna kind of look at it.
I didn't tell anybody until I was about 17 or 18.
So I kind of dealt with that all the way through school and adolescence.
Obviously when you're struggling with trauma to some degree, you find outlets, you know, you rebel and mine was drugs, mine was alcohol, mine was all the other things which eventually got me kicked out of school and kicked out of home quite early on in my late teens.
And basically I just fucked her out and did shitloads of drugs and drank a load and broke a lot of relationships and rules and all the rest of it.
So I was working like factory jobs and I was working bar jobs and restaurant jobs because that's essentially all I could get because I had no...
Nothing going for me really, to be fair.
And then that one day, I basically just kind of thought, golly, do you what mean?
I've really got to do something about this and got myself into an art foundation.
Like art was the only thing I really thought was something that I wanted to pursue or was the only thing that was gonna be, know, a good enough distraction for me to move forward.
So I did an art foundation at Salisbury College.
And then from there I did a bit of teaching.
我读了PGCE。
I did a PGCE.
I played around with a few things, a tattoo artist and sorry apprentice, I should say, never made it to artists because, yeah, it wasn't for me that I realized I preferred getting tattoos and actually doing them on people.
So that's that's a weird thing.
But yeah, then yeah, kind of, you know, obviously through that art foundation and all the rest of it, started to...
There was obviously decisions that you had to make after that year and it was kind of like, well, you know, the tutor said, well, do you want to...
What do you want to do?
And I was like, I want be an artist.
Fine art is probably what I was gonna do.
And he said, maybe you should try graphic design because your drawings are quite detailed.
I was always quite meticulous.
Like I wasn't very expressive.
I was more like, do know what I mean?
I mean, as you can tell how everything is lined up here, that's how my brain kind of works a little
有点。
bit.
Beautifully arranged.
Kind of beauty like kind of was it kind of organized chaos, should we call it?
So, yeah, so kind of did like an HND in graphic design.
And then from there, I kept on falling forward and ended up getting enough credits to go to to Southampton Solent University and basically stumbled through that.
But while I was there, I managed to get myself.
I was working at a local cafe and I got a job at a very small agency who were doing some kind of media communication stuff and got like a part time job there.
So I was working there like while I was still at uni a little bit and then yeah just kind of carried on, carried on and start my own agency after that one shut down with my friend Adie and then I moved away from that maybe four or five years ago now and then just leaned fully into kind of the MBJ studio which is where I do a lot of creative work and obviously my partnerships with Lincoln and Affinity and Canva and education, books and bits and pieces like that.
So it's been a bit of...
It's been a journey but I think it's just...
It's like with anything like I'm a big believer in staying in the game long enough for things to compound and that is all I've done.
Do you know what I mean?
I've just continuously moved, fallen forward and made a lot of mistakes and tried to learn from them quite quickly and move on.
And then as you said with obviously the online community, was again like I'm a little twat from a little village in The UK.
Do you know what I mean?
Like there's like the population in Shedfield is like something like 3,000.
It's tiny.
Do you know what I mean?
Compared to the cities and all the rest of it.
So I was quite early on in seeing that places like Instagram, for example, when they were growing or when they were quite new, even before the Zucker Twat bought it, do know what I mean?
I was very much like thinking well this is quite an interesting way to show my work and show my process, do you know what I mean?
I can try and do that in an entertaining way.
Sketches and I can share my type and like it's just one of those things.
That was like 2012 or something I started doing that I think.
And then basically three times a week, I've done that for the last X amount of years, whether I've been on holiday, whether I've...
Do you what I mean?
It's sad really to be fair.
But like it's I've seen the proof of what it can do, the continuous showing up and I've got a much better relationship with it now.
But I think as an addict, the algorithm and beasts themselves can draw even the wisest of souls and not that I'm a wise soul, but you know, you can find yourself falling back into bad habits with it and all the rest of it.
So, but yeah, like for me, was just purely a way to get more work, show my work and show my process.
And I was very quick on the carousel phase long ago.
And then I was like very quick on the kind of real thing and that just exploded really and finding fun ways to get in front of camera and do some stuff.
Now I'm here talking to you, Katie.
So that's kind of like, that was actually a long story long to be fair.
Long story long, I'm here for it.
I enjoyed it.
And it's so inspiring to just...
Like from where I'm sitting, it looks like you haven't really known where you were going, but you just made decisions on like what feels good or what you're sort of drawn to.
Then figure it out as you go, which is really inspiring.
It's, I'm not very organized.
My wife actually did my, what she is like this human design thing, which is like I'm obsessed
with human design.
Are you?
I've done the certifications and everything.
What are all that cool shit?
This is so interesting now.
So, yeah, my my wife did all that for me and she showed it to me the other night.
I'll send you my results if you want.
But basically I'm very much ruled by my gut.
That is kind of...
That is where I am as well as a load of other things.
But yeah, so I've just learned over the years to do more of the stuff that lights me up and less of the stuff that doesn't.
And by doing that I've allowed...
It's allowed me to do more of the stuff that I want to do.
So yeah, mean we're not gonna go into the whole human design thing because I don't really understand it.
My wife just gave it to me and said read this, this is you.
And I was like, crikey that.
It's little bit me actually.
Yeah, but It's spooky is it?
Because it's like Yeah,
it's very accurate.
It's very like...
非常……
Very...
The way I'm wired, the way I think.
It was a very eye opening experience.
I'm not quite as spiritual or guided by that as my wife is.
But when I went through that, was like, how on earth how on earth does it know that from my birthplace, my birthday and time and all this kind of stuff, I was like, this is some sort of wizardry.
What is going on here?
But it is quite interesting for sure.
But yeah, it's just been a matter of falling forward and that when I find something that excites me, there's a reason why it excites me.
I mean humans as we all are, we crave novelty, we love novelty and I'm somebody who's always trying to through my work or whenever I'm doing a workshop or some sort of educational sharing anything, but I'm trying to always like we can talk about my triple threat a little bit later, but it's always like trying to, you know, when I feel that there's something that is exciting me, I'm like, I'm gonna explore that further.
And as soon as it stops exciting me, I just go and do something else.
That's kind of always been my mantra.
I'm not this kind of like niche down, do one thing, do nothing else.
That would probably make me pop.
So I like writing, I like drawing, I like helping people.
I like talking on stage.
I like building products.
And it's really good when I can use all of those things together, but it doesn't always happen.
But as long as I've got them all in my life, what I'm actually learning, is that I'm trying to do more things that slow me down and doing more difficult things because I think doing difficult things is gonna be a very powerful trait moving forward.
Still writing every single week, even though I finished the book.
It's like that focus thing you were talking about.
Exactly.
The ability to focus and sit down and do hard things is gonna be a big skill that not everybody will have.
So did you find that making your book?
Because I know you've got No Bullshit Branding.
是的。
Yes.
That's the second one that's just coming out.
So yeah, mean, for me, I've...
I was getting quite distracted a couple of years ago by all the things we mentioned really.
And I was like, obviously, AI was coming to the fore and I was like getting quite distracted with it, exploring with it, thinking about it.
And I was like, you know what?
Like, this is just a bit too distracting for me right now.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna write a book because I'm a twat.
So I was like, but the thing I like about writing, especially when you got to write, you know, I managed to wiggle.
I was gonna self publish, but then my previous publisher was called, we'd love to help you with it.
And we managed to come together on a good deal and all the rest of it, which is great.
But once that is signed and sealed and delivered, then have to do it.
Do know what I mean?
So you have to, you have deadlines and you have you have to collect all the imagery.
You have to write 40,000 words.
You have to design the book, which I got some help with with my friends at Pennybridge and all the rest of it.
But that particular process for me slows me down because you have to think when you write.
You have to slow down for all of your thoughts to catch you up a little bit.
Whereas sometimes if you don't have that kind of grounding thing, you find yourself like flittering over here, then flittering over here and then going around in circles and upside down.
Then by the end of the week, you're like, I think I've gone backwards.
I'm not too sure.
What did I do?
I've always been a big believer in like the things I start, I finish.
That's probably been one of the biggest catalysts for my own personal success because I think success is very individual to everybody.
I've defined my version of success.
I feel like I'm in that rhythm with it because purely I just when I start something, I finish it.
And then I don't do another thing until I finish that thing.
Do you know what I mean?
Because I used to be very different.
I used to have 25 half done things and nothing finished.
Whereas now I'm very much right I'm gonna write a book, do the book, focus on it, the best I can possibly do.
Once it's done then I get to start the new thing.
Obviously like little things that you can do along the way but for me, one big thing at a time has been a big, a big like focus for me.
That's a good one.
And I think finishing projects is such a big deal because it's so easy start things, especially like on the entrepreneurial brain.
Like, I think the literal meaning of entrepreneur is to start, but then it's finishing the wrapping up and be like done is this is the real challenge.
这……
It's it's...
Do you know what I mean?
There's probably some biology in there, some sort of like prehistoric, predated, early time part of the brain.
I think obviously we've got this little thing in our brain called the amygdala that hit that's that little...
It's like an almond shaped thing in your brain, isn't it?
And it's like, it's only job is to scam for threats and keep you alive.
That was its job.
And that was very useful way back when thousands of years ago.
Do know I mean?
Very, very useful.
But we obviously, we still have that brain and we live in a very different world now.
But I I think the I think the interesting thing for me about...
I think we get enough dopamine by the idea of stuff.
Do you what I mean?
So sometimes just having the idea is enough to keep us excited and it's like, yeah, I'm doing the thing and I'm thinking about the thing.
I'm going forward.
That's a great idea.
Do you know what I mean?
I think a lot of creative people especially get into that trap.
But the problem is finishing it requires outside approval.
And the problem is the idea of often putting something out into the world.
Like our ideas when they're in our head are perfect.
They're great because they're untouched.
You only see this version of it.
But you know when you put it out into the world, there'll potentially be backlash.
There'll be feedback.
Some people might not like it.
And I think I think that's the thing that stopped people from finishing stuff is the idea that once it's finished they then actually have to put it out into the world.
I think that is the biggest barrier for a lot of creative people is that if they just were able to just to turn that dial up and do that thing, it would dramatically change the course of their career and their life by just purely getting the ideas out of their head and into the world tested, validated, make them better, makes them better.
Because we've all got ideas.
It's a scary bit, isn't it?
And that's why not everybody does it.
Because it's like, oh, if I do it, people can see it's bad or something.
But yeah, getting over that is a big deal.
It's the fear of judgment and it's a very rational thing and it's everybody has it.
It's built into our brains.
But rather than stopping us from getting eaten by a saber tooth tiger it's now stopping us from becoming the people that we could become I think essentially.
Not that humans lived with, say, the two types.
I don't think I'm not too sure.
I'm not...
As you can tell, I
don't But think that's
if they did.
If they did.

Definitely know they didn't live with dinosaurs.
So, that's the one thing I do know.
No T rexes were chasing us.
对。
No.
No T rexes were eating us off the toilet like in Jurassic Park, which was one of my favorite
ever fantasy.
Oh, definitely not died the other day.
RIP.
Oh, he did.
Oh, he did.
The chap.
The chap.
The man whose name I've immediately forgotten.
I know exactly who you mean.
The lead man who was looking after kids.
Mister Jurassic Park.
是的。
Yes.
是的。
Yes.
非常。
Very.
So when I invited you on, did this podcast.
You were like, as long as we can talk about how we create...
How we...
Sorry.
As long as we can talk about how we help creative people.
I would love to know.
You mentioned briefly your three pronged thingy.
I would love to know about this.
Is that to do with helping creative people?
I think it's all intertwined.
So I mean, helping creative people.
Well, that is a big topic, isn't it?
So where should we start with that?
Should we start is there any anything specific you want to talk about or should we talk about some things that I feel are important?
Is there anything on the top of your mind before I go on a massive rant?
Amazing.
I mean, so the the first thing that popped into my mind before we go into the rant was this thing that I've I've had a lot of people mention it to me, you know, like, oh, okay.
This is like, I really want to be an illustrator, but you know, what's...
Is there any point now because AI and blah blah blah.
And I, and I do feel that like people coming into the industry as industry babies, it's such a weird time and I don't really know what to even say to people because of AI.
But then my dangerously optimistic brain is like, know what?
Just ignore it.
But then that's...
They get the...
I get the response of like, I can't just ignore it.
It's right there.
So I would love to know what your thoughts are on the matter.
Oh, shit.
It's a big matter.
Oh, no.
好的。
Okay.
I'm sorry.
好的。
Okay.
No, no, no, no.
I mean, important, incredibly important.
And this is also why for the exact this exact right exact reason, sorry, I have just built a free mentorship for 100 creatives, which is going to help them navigate this exact thing because I do see a bit of struggle happening.
But, you know, it's not just the juniors or the newbies.
I mean, I'm I'm seeing an industry that from the top down is suffering, which is...
And it's not just an industry.
It's it's a global market, global economy.
So and then add a fucking war on top of that and, you know, fucking parliaments all over the fucking place and cost of living going up and fucking wank over here and shit over here.
I mean, a problem, isn't it?
And yet we all just have to sit here and get on with it.
You know what I mean?
So I think that's the first thing I would say is that we have choice.
We get to decide how we show up and the effort we put in.
There are things that are in our control and there are things that are not in our control.
And I I'm a big believer on focusing on the things I can control like my effort, how much I show up, how much I try.
And those things are working okay at the moment.
所以……
So...
But who fucking knows what's gonna happen tomorrow?
You know what I mean?
So I'll glad...
I hope we're allowed to swear on this because I've been swearing a lot already.
But anyway, so
Do a lot.
好的。
Okay.
So AI, you know, it's gonna make it's gonna change a lot.
Think I think it's already we're already seeing its impact.
Now to answer the question should I bother?
Like if if I was a young illustrator like should I do this or should I do that?
I still believe you still got to do what you want to do.
Do you know what I mean?
So like you can't just go and do something else if you don't enjoy it because you're just gonna be sick of it.
Do you know I mean?
So I'd prefer to often struggle at the thing I love to do rather than do okay at something I really fucking hate.
So look technology is changing, it's gonna disrupt but I think we are coming to a point right now where you know, we are starting to see the dust settle a little bit.
Now we don't know what that looks like.
Two years ago there was this shiny new thing called AI and every man and his dog was like jumping on it and optimizing, chucking in everything, breaking everything.
And now they're starting to pull back just a little bit because it's not doing the things that they promised at the speed that it promised it.
So I think what we're seeing right now and it's not like finished.
I think over the...
Also I'm not fucking Nostradamus, so please take what I'm saying.
We'll pitch the salt.
But, you know, I think over the next year we'll see it kind of settle down just a little bit.
Now I have already seen clients come to me with like, oh, I do a lot of like identity work or logo work.
I'm getting a lot of chat GPT, like mood boards and like all of this stuff.
So, yeah, I mean, there's there's the thing with AI is essentially it's made...
I mean, there's so many things I wanna talk about here.
So let me just try and answer the question first before we get into the thing.
Like my answer to your friends who are illustrators, I would say yes, please do it because I do believe in things that are valuable will always be valuable.
And I think there will be a point where everything starts to look the same, where people will be looking for fresh perspective or fresh work or fresh ideas.
And those will just become more valuable because there'll be less people who can do it because there would have been a lot of people who give up.
And my big thing is is like AI wins if creative people do give up.
So all creative people, please don't give up is what I would suggest.
Now I have this idea that I'm calling the kind of gravity of average.
And I was writing about this recently and systems in general have this ability to make people average, not by like on purpose.
I just think it's like an outcome of something that we're kind of already living in.
So when I think about education, do know what I mean?
Like the educational system has a really, really tough job to do.
It's got to educate millions of people.
So the only way they could do that is create standardised curricular markings, grade schemes, you know, and all these kind of best practices.
But what that does is it means that everybody who goes to school gets marked on the same things and in the same way and judged on the same thing.
So we learn to win within a system.
But the problem is it makes a lot of people exactly the same.
And it's the same with like professional best practices, like creatives having all the same process, you're naturally gonna look the same.
算法。
Algorithms.
Oh, look, this is recommended and now it's trending and now everybody's doing the same thing, just a slightly different version.
So what the gravity of averages is that all of these individual systems are actually sucking people towards the middle and the middle is getting bigger.
Do know what I mean?
And the problem is when the middle gets bigger, average gets bigger, there's more competition, budgets get shrunk, and it's more difficult to stand out.
And that comes from both ends.
So the floor is rising.
So people who, let's say, weren't as competent, weren't able to do stuff, they are now in the middle.
They can now prompt ask a computer and they can build the perception of somebody who is competent.
Do you know what I mean?
So they the bottom is being risen into the middle.
But also what I'm seeing from the other side is that the people that I used to look at who were exceptional, who were like stand out like four or five years ago are now all jumping on this optimization train to try and be quicker, to try to be more speedy, And they're being sucked back into the middle.
Do you know what I mean?
So the people that were once exceptional are also being dragged in by this gravity because through this need to keep up and be speedy, they're getting AI to write all their shit.
They're not even commenting on their comment on their posts anymore, they're not even like saying anything unique or individual because they're getting the computer to do it.
So the people that used to be known for their originality and their personality have also been sucked in.
So it's not only the middles just staying here.
It's getting bigger because from both sides, people have been sucked into this thing.
So there's this thing called Hotelling's Law.
I'm just saying I'm off.
I'm off now.
I'm going around
the house.
I'm enjoying that.
I'm here.
You're here for it.
That's good.
So get a cup of tea because let's strap in.
We're going wild here.
So there is this there's this chap called Harold Hotelling, and he was a...
He was an economist.
And he had this theory that businesses when they're in competition with each other naturally drift towards sameness rather than differentiation.
So if you go to any service station or you look at, you know, in America, the old, highways.
你看……
And you look at...
There's, like, loads of pictures that you can see where you've got, like, McDonald's, Burger King.
All of the fast food chains are all within, like, 300 meters of each other.
All the petrol stations, seven different brands are all together because they all want to be in the same place as everybody else's because they want to try and nix some of the other people's customers, essentially.
So Harold Hotelling, he suggested this.
Imagine like you...
He had this kind of a wonderful theory about a long beach.
So imagine a long beach with two ice cream vendors on each end.
Alright?
And then on that beach, there are humans who want ice cream, but they're all equidistant.
Okay?
So this person's this end, this person's this end.
You got an equidistant amount of people here and here.
What this guy...
Well, let's say the blue one and the red one.
What the blue guy goes and does is goes like, well, if I move slightly closer, I'm actually gonna maybe start to nick a few of the red guy's customers.
And then the the red guy sees that, and he goes, wait a minute.
If you're moving forward, I'm gonna move forward.
And what happens is they gravitate towards the middle until they can't move away from each other anymore because then they're worried about losing customers.
And that's essentially Hotelling's Law.
And I think we are seeing that on a mass scale right now, especially with like how many...
I mean, I don't wanna call them knob ads because they're not knob ads.
They're just doing the obvious predictable logical thing, which is copy what everybody else is doing.
So you see all these big companies lumping mass money into AI.
You can see every LinkedIn coach fucking influencer building an AI chatbot, AI tool, AI this.
So it doesn't even...
It's not even needed.
They're not making any money out of it.
They're just doing it because they think they can save time.
Do know what I mean?
But the problem is now they all look the same.
Now they all sound the same.
Do you know what I mean?
There's nothing unique about them.
Like, every single day, there's this new AI thing.
But the thing I'm attracted to is like totally the opposite of that.
So my theory, the reason I mentioned Hotelling's Law is because I personally believe that opportunity disproportionately flows towards recognizable difference.
So what I mean by that is that maybe what mister Hotelling was telling us was that the opportunity for people is actually on the outside.
If everybody's being sucked in towards this, maybe the opportunity is over here.
And I think this is where creative people have the skills, the brains, the know how, the creativity, the unpredictability to push the edges a little bit more because all these people who are gravitating towards the middle clearly don't.
So this is what I'm saying.
Think in...
I think if we can just hold on, I think I would say 80 to 90% of those people who have been sucked into the middle for the sake speed, following the crowd, doing what Barry on the Internet says that they should do even though they don't even know Barry.
Do know what I mean?
I apologize to all Barrys out there.
可怜的Barry。
Poor Barry.
You know, then I'll sit there and regret it and go, fuck.
Like, the reputation I've built, the community I've built is...
Has been eroded away by my laziness.
Because I think that's the...
I think that...
And I don't think...
I think what...
Like I said, like, about novelty, I'll bring...
Come back to novelty because novel...
The really interesting thing about novelty is that when it wears off, the only thing that's left is whether you give a shit.
Do know what I mean?
So once the novelty of AI wears off, once the novelty of creating your own illustrations is enough, once the doing your own logo is enough, once the building your seventy fifth app that nobody fucking wants is enough, People are just gonna get on with shit.
Do know what I mean?
Because Yeah.
Like, they might be...
They're doing it now because it's novel, not because they want to.
But when they have to do it for their marketing or for their work or to make their money, they're not gonna do it.
Do you know what I mean?
Because they're not gonna be able to get it right.
They're not gonna be able to do the thing they want it to do.
So look.
I mean, I could go on for days about this.
So long story short, hold on because it's gonna get better.
Hold on.
And it's like you said earlier, I think like it's more than half the battle, the long game.
Like, if you if you can carry on, time is like one of the most magical ingredients in success, isn't it?
只要…
Just be...
Still being there and still doing it Yeah.
多年。
Years
I think it's...
The problem with time is it's finite.
Do know what I mean?
It's a never ending thing.
And I think that's probably the...
Maybe one of the biggest selling points for the people who are diving heavy into AI.
Look, I'm not anti AI.
I'm just very pro human.
Do know what I mean?
I use it in ways...
Mean, it's great for me, do you know what I mean?
To some degree because when I'm on a walk, I can talk to it and it stores all my shit and I can just have a conversation around my ideas and my thoughts.
And if I've got...
If I...
I'm a bit of an addict, as we all know.
So if I find a thread, I can follow it really quickly now.
I'm actually...
For somebody who sits in their office all day pretty much by himself, you know, it's great to have somebody or something to bounce their ideas off.
But I've I bring it in when I think it's useful and not when it's not.
And the more and more I play with it, the more and more I realize it's it's not helping me become the person I necessarily want to become.
Know, it helps me do with some certain tasks.
If I'm on a client call, I'll get my little AI recording thing will be in there and I'll be able to just get the transcript out of it rather than having to make notes because when I make notes, I get distracted and forget what the person's talking to me about.
So little things like that have been great for me.
But, you know, I think, yeah, when we sort talk about staying in the game long enough and and the time thing, the problem is I think what a lot of people are doing is they're they're over optimizing now.
So they're trying to optimize everything.
I saw this hilarious thing the other day about Steven Bartlett and the diary of a CEO, and he was talking about how he must come cold plunge his dog in the morning just to be fully optimized for all the stuff he has to do.
Do you what I mean?
But, like, you can spend so much time optimizing that you're never actually doing the fucking thing.
Do know what I mean?
That's the other side too, isn't it?
It's like, yeah, there are certain things that are...
I've got this kind of little saying that I've been playing with which is like automate the predictable, humanize the meaningful.
So anything like onboarding clients, sending out contracts, reminders for my clients, invoices or whatever it is, that's all stuff that AI could help me automate.
Do know I mean?
Because it's predictable.
Has a time and it has a date and there's a process.
Bing bang bosh.
Do know what I mean?
But anything that is meaningful, I still humanize.
So the work, the creativity, the ideas, they all still come from me and because that's also where I have the most fun.
But like I said, I think the problem we're seeing is the over optimization of stuff.
So well, if I automate everything and I optimize everything, I'm gonna have all this time left.
Do you know what I mean?
Because they know the time is finite and hey, don't we all want more time with our dog, our kids, our wives, our husbands, our partners or whatever it is?
Of course we do.
But I think the worry is for me is the the over optimization.
Do know what I mean?
Because I don't think we're supposed to be just like I don't think humans are supposed to be brands.
I don't think we're supposed to optimize every part of our day.
I just don't think that is not not human for me.
I'm not a robot.
Bring back dilly dallying, I say.
Dilly?
Fucking right.
Dilly.
I'm gonna write that down.
I haven't heard that for a while.
Dilly dally.
I said tickety I said tickety boo the other day, and somebody was like, what the fuck does tickety boo mean?
It's right up there with dillydallying.
Definitely.
Isn't it?
Love that.
I mean, I love you talk about the power of being weird as well.
And then I think that's something that in a good ship, we talk about that as well.
Like embrace your weirdness.
It's your...
这是……
It's...
I don't wanna say a superpower, but it's it's the thing that differentiates you.
And it's just so easy to do because it is you.
It's not like trying on somebody else's too small jumper because if you're just yourself and you're just, you embrace your own weirdness, you can't really go far wrong, think.
And that's something that AI has not...
I don't think it can do it because it's just like homogenizing all the other things.
是的。
It's yeah.
It's this convergence of scale, isn't it essentially?
And I think the...
I mean, again, like when we talk about, okay, so we're trying to help think just thinking about how we help creative people get chosen and build more opportunity for themselves, which is definitely something we wanna talk more about.
But when we talk about the weirdness, do do know what I mean?
Like the weirdness for me comes from a few things.
It comes from your personal taste and the things you're into, do you know what I mean?
Which are probably yours and the things that you own.
But they're also your weirdness probably comes from the people you spend your time with, the things you absorb, the experiences you've either gone through or enjoy going through regularly, like the things that you're into.
I think those, when I because I obviously always think about it from like a brand perspective or a reputational building perspective, like your experiences and your story and the things that you've gone through, the way you look at the world, your point of view, the way you see things slightly differently, they're incredibly powerful things.
The problem is we're continuously told that we're wrong and we're not doing it the right way.
So we try to hide some of those things and only do and talk about the things that we know you know might get us accepted by the crowd.
Do know what I mean?
Because that's another human thing like belonging.
That's something that again thousands of years ago if we stood out too much we'd probably be kicked out of the tribe and get eaten by a dinosaur.
John, I mean, bringing back dinosaurs.
But you know what I mean?
Like so fitting in was survival.
John, I mean, and again, like now we look at the social media, the application of all of this fitting in, you've got to do this to be cool, this is what all your friends are doing, so you should do it, social media, all this stuff, TikTok and all the rest of it.
Do know what I mean?
If you're not doing it, you're an outlier.
Do know what I mean?
Or if you're too weird, you're not gonna be accepted and the world is very polarizing.
And so the things unfortunately that most people are hiding are the things, you know, firstly, they'll make you really happy if you're yourself all the time, won't they?
But secondly, they're the things that make your work very interesting.
They make you very interesting.
And I think in a world that's becoming less human, I think being your own human is a very, very powerful ability if you can do it, which you can.
You just have to
去做。
do it.
就是
Which
sounds What like would you say to people who are maybe feeling...
Like if somebody's feeling a bit scared to be themself because they're scared of that rejection or even perceived rejection, because you are so open and talk about your story and everything.
Like I'm sure you, and you even said that you kept it to yourself, like the early abuse and things, you kept it to yourself through your teenage years.
What changed to make you share openly?
I wonder.
I don't know the answer to that.
If I'm totally honest.
I think maybe the reason I started to share with others was because I did a lot of work on myself.
And I think I got to a point where I was comfortable enough that I understood it wasn't my fault, especially the trauma side of it, that I thought I've always believed like I'm kind of going around the houses here a little bit.
But firstly, I believe I started sharing was because I was comfortable with myself enough to share.
But I did that through a lot of counseling and a lot of work and reading a lot and trying to understand how my brain ticks and all the rest of it.
So that was one thing.
But there's the other side of there's the other side of the community of everything which is I believe because of the beast I've built purely by accident it was never intentional.
I think I actually think I have a bit of what's the word I'm looking for.
It's not obligation.
That's totally the wrong word.
But I think I have a responsibility to and I have the ability to reach people.
And I think it's always been for me very, very important to reach people about the right things.
It's very clear that on social media especially it's always quite me me me me me and it's always win win win win success success success success but I've always tried to tried to be quite real with everything so I've talked about ivs struggles with my wife, I've talked about addiction, I've talked about you know obviously that the sexual abuse that I don't do that for sympathy I do that for trying to help somebody else struggle with what I struggle with because if I can be brave enough to put it out into the world to that many people I hope that they can then go and speak to their mom or their dad or their counselor or their friend about maybe something they had been through because I know how powerful that was for me.
So I try to use my voice so others can use theirs a little bit if I'm totally honest.
So yeah I think it's...
I think you've got to be comfortable with yourself.
But again, we talked about design your own way, success is your your path.
That's not something that you could rush.
I can't just go just be brave, go fucking do it, stop being stop being a whinge bag, Which is what part of the internet would do because it's not helpful.
You know I mean?
Everybody's starting from a slightly different place and all of these people who tend to offer a lot of opinions, they are doing it from a very different version of themselves than what they were ten years ago, twenty years ago, thirty years ago, where it was probably a lot more difficult for them.
So, yeah, I think I've just been always a big believer in just understanding how I work and moving forward.
I mean, we're all a little bit broken, aren't we?
We've all got some sort of something going on that people don't know about.
And I think the more people that are honest about that, I think the better the world would be.
But hey, it doesn't build good brand perception and it doesn't build me audience or my reach or my engagement.
So I've got to pretend that everything's going right all the time because it's gonna make me look bad if I pretend I'm real online.
Do you know what I mean?
It's the opposite really.
Because it's so inspiring to hear a real story and like see somebody as a whole human, a human human is like, oh, that's inspiring.
This person has gone through life stuff and is successful and defining their own version of success and talking about it.
They don't have to be this polished slick bullshit thing.
Yeah, exactly.
But I mean, but again, there has to be a balance doesn't there?
Because, know, I do...
I believe there's a time and a place for everything.
Do you know what I mean?
I do believe that, you know, because I again, as the entrepreneur businessman and as the human, I try and keep them both under control to some degree.
But like for an example, you know, I see a lot of designers online, you know, talking about how much they hate their clients to connect with their fellow designers.
And I'm like, you're a fucking idiot, mate.
Like all your clients are now looking you and say, yeah.
I mean, what do you think they're not watching?
And then there's also the other side, which is, you know, which is a very real thing, like burnout and stress worry.
And I think these are really important things to talk about, but they shouldn't be things that take up your entire feed and your entire narrative because again, like there's you're not getting work because you're telling the people who might buy off you that you're burnt out all the time and you're stressed and you can't do any work.
So if I'm a client and I'm looking at that, I'm going, do you know what?
I'm gonna go with somebody else.
Do know I mean?
So I think there has to be a balance at the timing.
I think there has to be a reason to talk about stuff.
And again, don't wanna tell people what to do.
I would always be very wary of what you are saying and where, because I think there has to always be intention.
I think it's always good to show yourself.
But I think this again, this is probably the social media personal brand trap that people have fallen into a little bit that they've got to share, you know, build as they go, share their story.
But I think that's actually harming more people than it is helping to some degree.
So yeah, that's that.
It's brilliant.
I mean, like sharing from, was it the person you share from the scar and not the open wound?
I think after you've gone through something and you've processed it and figured out what you like.
That's always an easier place to share from.
Oh, yeah.
I think that's a that's a lovely way to look at it it as well.
It's a lovely way to look at it.
But yeah, I think it's just important to remember that if trying to build a business, you're trying to build a client base, just
非常
be
very intentional and deliberate about the things that you're doing because that will help essentially.
Yes, genius.
Yeah, what are you trying to do?
Do that.
Yeah, yeah, we're gonna do, we're gonna share
the work Scrap out right we wanna now.
And like, it's made a lot more difficult because people talk about posting 20 reels an hour, do you know what I mean?
Gary V said the other day, you've gotta be posting 500 pieces of content a week.
And I'm like fuck you Gary You've got a team of 75 people creating your content.
Like the narrative
is I was gonna say he's got like a full time mega TV.
Yeah, know.
And again, I don't know Gary V.
He's probably a nice guy.
But like this constant narrative of like performance.
Do you know what I mean?
It's it's causing more problems than it's fixing, I would suggest.
I mean, I love your your mission, free design education for the world.
So I don't know if you wanna maybe just talk a little bit about that before we wrap up because I think that would be a nice inspiring.
I feel like we're probably gonna have to do another one of these talks where I actually try and help create people.
But this is more of a thing.
This kind of got around the houses a little bit.
But yeah, I mean, for me, you know, big free design education for the lot is something I've always tried to lean into, especially over the last kind of, let's say five or six years.
But I've somewhat refined that mission a little bit over the last eighteen months or so because creativity is bigger than design.
So I'm trying to kind of like I'm a creative person through and through and I work a lot with people through multiple creative disciplines.
Obviously, I have a designer's brain, but I do run creative businesses.
So I've kind of moved that mission towards essentially helping human creativity shape the world.
That's kind of the mission I'm on now and helping like we've talked about helping people design their own way and helping people find out their version of success and I do that through many means.
But also like it's not just education, I also help my clients, I also help the people I partner with, I also help myself through all of these things as well.
Like always trying to use human creativity, human being a very important world there because I think we do have the power to rule the world as creatives.
So that's important.
But I've got a three step plan with that and step one is like I can make the mission happen if I do these three things.
So number one is earn one of the most trusted reputations in the creative industry.
Number two is build extraordinary opportunity for others And then number three is create real world impact.
And those will happen in some sort of sequential order I would imagine.
But everything I am doing, like I said, whether it's for people I work with in the studio or the people I coach or the people I write books for or emails for or blogs for or courses for whatever it is, it's to try and help them build extraordinary opportunity for themselves.
I'm always only ever teaching from stuff that I've done and I'm doing today rather than potentially what worked fifteen years ago when the world was very, very different.
So I'm a big believer in eating my own dog food which is basically just dumb.
If I'm telling other people to do it, I have to do it myself rather than like just tell people to do stuff and not do it myself.
That's kind of
Integrity is good.
I want more out of the world.
Yeah, think, I mean, it's a part of reputation building.
I think we are gonna have to have another round two of this because I've got all of these different things that we can chat about which I truly believe will help creative people build their reputations and become a safer commercial choice for their clients and build more opportunity for themselves.
So maybe we do back to backs.
Maybe this could be like the intro to the twat.
And then maybe like next week we can do round two and we'll actually dive into something helpful.
Should we do that?
I'm up for that
if you're up for that.
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
Because I think
Let's do it.
好的。
Okay.
我……
I've...
There's too much that I want help with right now that I know we don't have time for.
So this can almost be the amuse bouche.
That was French.
Quiet the appetite.
Bad French.
So, yeah, let's let's do a round two and then we can just release them back to back.
But the next one we can make sure that it's very like, this is what you should do.
对。
Yes.
The actions
because this is what this is what I am doing
I love it.
