好的。
Okay.
You're in for a treat.
We've got a lovely interview with Carly Kuhn, who is a US based illustrator, artist and author.
We talk about lots of things, but basically you're not behind, having children won't derail your career and you know, the amazing long timelines of publishing.
I don't wanna give it all away because then it won't be fun to listen to.
Basically, Carly has worked with lots of exciting clients like Bergdorf Goodman, Sotheby's, Rosewood Hotels, the American Ballet Theatre.
And her work is...
She does lots of exciting things like stationary wallpaper, she illustrates books, and she has a new book coming out, which I'll tell you all about at the end of this interview.
She's also got a Substack as well called The Cartelier.
好的。
Okay.
好的。
Okay.
Enough from me.
On with the interview.
Oh, cool.
你好,Carly。
Hello, Carly.
I'm so excited to chat to you.
We've done some pre chatting just to say hello and things, and it's already been an incredible podcast, so I'm glad we've now hit record.
I'm so excited to be here.
I'm such a fan of the podcast.
Yay.
We're honored to have you here as well.
So whereabouts are you in the world?
So I am in Michigan in The United States, but I'm originally born and raised in New York City, and then lived in LA for twelve years, then Miami, and only just moved to Michigan in January, which is where my husband is from.
Oh, amazing.
So this is like a brand new chapter for you.
是的。
Yes.
In your way you're living this.
对。
Yes.
And it's great.
Brilliant.
Oh, maybe that's a good place to start then.
So you mentioned that you grew up in New York.
So maybe you could talk us through your illustration career, your creative wiggly path.
好的。
Yes.
Because the original reason that we were messaging is firstly that you found the podcast, but also that you've not had any formal art or illustration education.
And you'd love to chat about it.
So I was like,
So I really want, I'm so curious to know how you got to where you are now and where you began.
Yeah, so definitely not a traditional path.
I grew up in New York City and I grew up in the heart of culture.
I feel like I grew up wanting to be either like on Broadway, SNL, or like a fashion designer.
I remember those things, which is cliche New York City.
But I went to school at this Newhouse School Syracuse when I majored in television, radio film.
So I think for me, I always...
I thought like I wanted to work in television.
My older brother was film, so like I wanted TV.
Comedy specifically has always been like the direction.
So after college, I moved to Los Angeles, And I worked...
My first job was at like a talent agency, which if anyone's ever seen the show like Entourage, it was like the assistant Lloyd.
But basically, it's an agency that represents all the fancy actors, directors, and you're working for the agents that represent them.
I was true, like Hollywood, Los Angeles world, bringing people upstairs, celebrities, all that kind of thing.
And then at the same time, I think maybe a year into living in Los Angeles, I started doing improv comedy.
不错。
Cool.
So I did...
It's this school called Groundlings that, like, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, like, they all went to this school and a lot of SNL kind of recruits from them.
But I was just in the school.
I was doing that after work.
Like, I I was taking a class or I was doing it on the weekends.
And I...
The the kind of little, like, sprinkles of drawing started, but just like I was drawing friends on their birthdays, and then their boss would see it.
And I, like...
It was just nothing.
It was just like a fun little thing.
But I was doing this comedy, and I was working.
And then from that job, I went and worked for Chelsea Handler, which she was...
She's a, like, a a female talk show host in The States, and she's very provocative out there.
She had late night show.
And so I was working there with a bunch of comedians and doing Groundlings still, like improv.
And I think through all of this, I was enjoying it, and I loved it.
And I loved comedy, but I was...
I don't know exactly what I wanna be doing.
I wanna be more creative.
但是……
But...
And I have a food blog at one point for cooking that was like a comedy cooking blog to teach myself to cook.
It was like winter chicken dinner or something.
Legendary.
So I feel like I was just always doing a bunch of different things, testing the waters.
And then I just...
I guess I just started drawing again, like, just for fun, and Instagram started.
And I'm a little dating myself, but I think it was like twenty fourteen or '15.
And I just started drawing as like a creative outlet.
And like, I always get two questions when people like find my work, like, do you use the medium that you do, which is like ink on paper mainly.
And also when I started, I unintentionally ended up in this fashion illustration world.
And it was because when I started, first, I was at an office.
So I was just taking like pen and paper from the office, like printer paper and like notepads and ink, just what was available.
And then I was drawing like what was on Instagram in the beginning, which was really like fashion street style bloggers, fashion photography, and I would just draw what I saw, and I would tag the people, which again is very, like, common now, but I was...
It was so early, and I was just doing that.
And that's without anything in my mind other than this is something creative that I'm doing, and I'll do it every day.
And I wanna, like, back up because the, like, comedy improv part of it, a lot of people are like, wow.
You went from, like, TV comedy to, like, illustration.
But what was really interesting is it...
There were two shifts that, like, changed the way I saw the world.
And the first was when I was taking improv.
One of...
I was in this writing lab, which is, like, writing sketches, like SNL kind of.
And the teacher said, if you wanna find the funny, like, wanna find inspiration, he's go out into the world and just watch how someone orders a cup of coffee.
That's where you really find the true humor in life, not, oh, let's imagine some crazy scenario in space and like something fantastical happens.
What's the the the funny is in like those little moments.
And still to this day, even though I don't work in comedy directly, if I'm sitting next to a couple and I hear them say things, it's just you become very aware of the world around you.
And then when I like fast forwarding two seconds, when I started drawing and I was doing that all the time, that was like the second kind of window that opened that if you're drawing people and you're observing people and you switch that light on, you can't unsee it.
So it's all of a sudden you're not just seeing people, you're seeing like posture and how people hold a cup of coffee.
So you go from observing on how someone's ordering and how it becomes funny if someone has a very specific order and then becoming an illustrator, it's like, all of a sudden, I see how someone holds a cup of coffee or someone has glasses that appeal to me.
So that was a long winded kind of way, but that kind of takes us to...
I guess, what took me to it becoming, like, a job is, again, I was just doing it, drawing, tagging.
But at the time, Instagram in the beginning, it was a lot, like, instant, like the name, and you're seeing things in real time.
And I think what caught people's attention is I would see something and draw it and almost post it within, like, the hour.
And I drew Sarah Jessica Parker, and she saw it and reposted it.
And so that was like a a first...
Oh my gosh.
Like, something's happening.
And, like, just the power of Instagram, it just took off, and I can pause there
if you want.
It's incredible.
I love the parallels between the observational thing about comedy and obviously observational drawing.
Because I'd never even thought about that, but you're right.
They're like the two same threads weaving the two together.
Was that when you were posting, and like Sarah Jessica Parker reposted it and things, was that like a big break moment or was that just like one of the many moments of like a snowball effect?
You think I think it was definitely...
I don't know how much it was a big break because I feel like it was definitely a first, like, wave of people following me.
And I...
But I feel like I wasn't stopping, and I was...
I kept just continuing.
So I feel like it maybe put me on some people's radars, but I think it was, like, a slow build.
So maybe this publication would see my work.
And I guess I just, it was, like, kind of right place, right time that not...
There's a couple of other people that are in my class.
I'm putting in, like, quotations for the listeners.
My my class of Instagram, there's a couple of us that kind of started around the same time, and we were the fashion ill...
Instagram
Instagram illustrators.
And, again, it was like that was what was happening on Instagram, the fashion weeks and the...
And then all this, like, award shows, things that work in the moment, and I was drawing those scenes.
So I think people started to see that.
And when I actually went off full time, my job working in television, you have...
You go on hiatus to film, and then you can come back.
And at that point, like, I built a following, and my boss was like, oh, we're going on hiatus for two months.
You can come back in May, and I didn't.
But I had my first job, which was, like, taking over for Elle magazine's, like, digital.
It was like during fashion week, and I just started like drawing from photos because I wasn't going there, but I was just drawing like the moments that I was seeing.
I don't even know if that one was paid, but that was I think a big moment.
And then I think my first paid job was for a PR agency had reached out to me for the holidays.
They wanted me to draw some of the editors that they would gift.
And I think that's also how pricing maybe got started too, because I...
It's so hard to remember, but I think they were like, oh, we have this budget.
We'll pay you.
I'm like that a lot higher than you expected at that time?
Probably.
I have not the best memory, especially, like, now as a mom of two kids.
I'm like, I don't know, yesterday, five years ago.
So, yeah, I feel like it was maybe more than I expected, but I don't feel like I had any concept.
And still to this day, I just...
It's still crazy.
And if anyone is an illustrator, you probably...
You're laughing because it's like, I could have one company be like, yeah, we'll pay you $500 and then another $5,000 and someone could think 500 is way too much and 5,000 is not enough.
So still to this day, it's just...
就是……
It's such...
It's so dependent on
It's all completely made up, isn't it?
对。
Yes.
That's the thing.
Like, everybody's picking numbers out of the butt.
Feel like this is the correct one.
You're like, is it the
整体?
whole?
没错。
Exactly.
对。
Yes.
So Were you on Twitter back in the day as well?
Because I remember that was a big thing.
People would watch stuff live and then be drawing it and tweeting, like, what was going on.
I remember, like, Nikki groomed doing awards ceremonies and stuff.
I never...
I think I maybe before all of this, I was like, oh, I'm gonna be in comedy.
I should do Twitter.
But I didn't do Twitter.
I think I just stuck to Instagram.
And that was my, like, live moment.
Like, Met Gala, I still, to this day, will, like, love drawing it and then seeing the looks that I like and then posting a few that night, which is not as common now today because it's...
You're seeing...
You're not seeing everything as live, but that was fun to do.
That was just for myself.
I love having those moments, and and my archive of work is like a a little, like, historical timeline of a lot of these things.
Memor...
Like, memories of different award shows or fashion shows or the moment in time.
Yeah, but I think that when you really enjoy it and you're passionate about it, people can smell it and they can sense it in your work.
So it's one of the magic ingredients I reckon.
Yeah, and I think one of the other things, like when I started...
What was funny is a lot of people were like, that's so vulnerable.
You're just drawing and putting yourself out there.
And I was doing comedy and I was doing improv in holes in the wall, getting up on stage, sometimes five people in the audience, like a lot of spouses of the people that we were performing.
And they're like, okay, you're at a grocery store and you haven't seen someone in ten years, go.
And you're on stage, like trying to make up scenarios.
So I feel like I was going from that to just drawing and posting it.
And I didn't even share my face for the first year or my name.
So it was whatever.
It's a lot less scary to do that.
In comparison.
You're like Yeah.
The comfort of your own home.
Nobody sees you until you hit post.
没错。
Exactly.
And I think also, I didn't view myself as an artist or an illustrator.
I think a lot of people that were the first ones to put their work out there weren't people that were so like serious artists.
Like, it was looked down upon in the beginning.
So I think in a way, there wasn't a...
There weren't as many stakes.
Oh, I'm putting it out there, and I'm a serious artist, and I'm trying to get representation or this or that.
It was just...
This is a creative outlet, and I just wanna...
I don't know what it's gonna be.
And I think also, my...
Because I didn't go to art school and I didn't have a set style, I found it along the way by just drawing.
I was drawing every day and posting every day.
And I think I was put in this fashion illustrator bucket, and a lot of the people, some of them were more trained and they went to school for it, and they had these beautiful lines, and it's very a lot...
Very accurate and realistic and my lines were a little wonky and I don't capture things perfectly.
And I also didn't gravitate necessarily towards the traditional beautiful scenes.
I liked capturing the the models backstage outside smoking or whatever.
But even the, like, more traditional scenes, I wasn't quite getting the lines right, and I was insecure maybe about that in the beginning.
But I think that's really what resonated with people that, like, there's a hand behind it, which is funny because now more than ever, that's, of course, like, what people connect to knowing that there's a person behind it.
But that kind of perfectly imperfect thing, this is just my line, and I had to embrace it and realise that's what makes my work me.
Sounds like from where I'm sitting, it sounds that naivety of just being like, just showing up.
This is just a daily thing.
Was like, Helen always says naivety is a superpower.
And and this is a perfect example of it.
You're showing up, sharing what you're doing, tagging people, doing it, and then it's become its own thing.
And the momentum is always huge as well.
I think once you start doing something Mhmm.
Like, for me, posting every day really early on in the olden Instagram Yes.
Posting every day really helped because it just meant that I did it every day.
Expected to see it every day.
And then it was hard to stop almost.
And I'm sure you felt when someone asked, oh, how'd you get so good?
And I try to
说
say it
was almost less about getting good at something and it's more just about getting comfortable in your style.
And I think that's...
It's such a cliche, but it's like the practice makes perfect, but in this case, not perfect.
It's like practicing makes you, like, find your style and your voice.
And so I think it's just not getting good, but just getting a style and finding, like, what becomes second nature to you.
And I got to a point where it's like, I see an image and I'm like, okay.
I, like, know that I'll be able to capture that.
但是
But
The answer people want though, is it?
If I just dial by making loads and loads of work and doing it again and again, like, oh, no.
I don't wanna do that.
That sounds horrible.
I know.
Unfortunately, is.
It's just time.
So I know where are we up to in terms of your career?
Because you've just left your TV job.
That's What very year are we in roughly?
I think like '27...
'16, '17.
And Ten years.
And I was still living in Los Angeles.
And I think I did a lot of different kinds of jobs, and especially because it was a very unknown path.
Like, it wasn't a traditional illustrator.
I wasn't doing, like, the tutorial work where you're doing stuff for, like, The New Yorker or The New York Times or any of these publications, because I didn't...
I also didn't even really know what an illustrator was.
I actually didn't like the word illustrator, and I only in the past, like, few years have reclaimed it and realized I wanna be called an illustrator.
But it was...
I started and people were like, oh, an Instagram illustrator.
And I think at the time, what I will say is I think being a creative is so tied to where you are in your life and like what you're doing.
And I feel I was in my mid twenties and my identity and who I was and what my morals and values were still forming.
And so I think I didn't really know what I wanted or, like, what world I fit in yet because it happened by accident.
So I didn't even really know what an illustrator was or the breadth of work that is available for an illustrator, which you guys are a great example of the three very different areas.
But yeah, I started, I think one of the things that was pretty consistent, like a couple of jobs that I did is actually in your world, which was live illustrations.
不错。
Nice.
And it was, I would be hired to do an event activation, they would call it.
Brand activation.
And it was like I did for Oscar de la Renta, they had me in store, and brides were trying on dresses, and I would draw the bride in the dress, like, to make it a little more special.
Or some makeup brand had some big fancy party at a house in the hills, and I was there to draw the people.
And I hate...
I was always so anxious going to these events, because I didn't feel confident also in that style of drawing people because it wasn't realistic.
So I was always nervous.
I'm like, people are gonna hate these.
They're not good.
And you also...
It's like a vulnerable position when you go there and you're around a lot of fancy people.
And sometimes you feel like people are viewing you in a certain way.
And they're like, Can you draw me?
But with my dog and my coffee and we're in yoga.
And sometimes people don't realize I'm not your personal artist for hire.
I don't know if you
found this, but I've spoken to a couple of live illustrators that do portraits.
The fashion illustrators that do portraits for brands and things.
They've said that some fantasy clients, fancy ladies having their portraits done will ask for it to be made to look different and things.
And they've had loads of plastic surgery in the art.
It's like, don't know how to draw you.
Do I draw you exactly as they see you?
Or that must be so tricky.
The pressure's already so high.
And then when you're in these strange, fancy environments.
对。
Yes.
It was very...
I feel like because...
Not like there was a cartoon aspect about it, but I always try to be like, I wanna disarm people, make them feel comfortable, and be like, I'm just trying to capture, like, a...
An aura.
你……
You...
I don't know if it's an aura, but I was...
I feel like I was almost trying to put, like, a disclaimer so they didn't expect it to be, like, an exact portrait.
But it was very stressful, but I always know I would leave them feeling great.
And I met a lot of people.
Like the...
I ended up...
The first time I ended up doing wallpaper was because I met these two interior designers at an event and they're like, oh, we wanna do wallpaper and we've been thinking about that.
So that ended up becoming from that event meeting them and that was like my first foray into wallpaper, which I think was like, maybe 2018.
But yeah, you asked like the the timeline.
So it was like I was doing that.
It was a lot of just random jobs like that.
I I drew people for like an event.
They hired me to do the name cards for a dinner party, and they...
I drew the people that were attending the party that they would then put at their seat.
People at the end of the day love having a little like personalized portrait.
Commissions were like little commissions for wedding anniversaries, because I think like first year is like paper or something.
然后……
And then...
And like I launched a print shop.
And again, all of this...
Through all this, I didn't really know what I was doing and happened by accident.
People are telling you a lot of different advice.
Don't sell prints.
Only sell prints.
Don't number your prints.
Do number your prints.
Sell it framed.
Don't sell it framed.
Pet portraits are terrible.
Never offer them.
They're embarrassing.
Pet portraits are very profitable.
Yeah, I remember the same thing.
I think like
an overall takeaway is like, no one really knows what the right thing is for the industry.
It's always changing.
There's not one way.
Did you did you always have a part time job at the same time?
Or when you quit the TV job, you're like, this is illustration time.
对。
Yes.
I was just doing the illustration.
Fantastic.
And so it was just definitely a lot of, like, random jobs and things here and there.
And trying to think...
Again, I I feel like I was just constantly not trying to rediscover myself or change what I was doing, but I feel like I've...
I was always trying to figure out what was next and try adding things and doing different things.
And when I launched the website, I thought I had to also have an interview series, which was just way too much.
And then in 2020, when COVID happened, I started doing these portraits, like these drive by portraits.
I put it out there.
Was like, if anyone wants in like the Los Angeles area, I went and I would drive and stay in the car.
My husband would drive and I'd take a photo and then draw them and then send them the digital so cool.
Was very popular then.
Yeah, it was really, it's like such a crazy time.
I started doing draw with carly on Instagram.
I ended up doing a Skillshare class like with Skillshare that happened during COVID because everyone was home and so that was part of that was one moment in time.
And I...
当我……
When I...
So that was now we're, like, up to, like, twenty twenty, and I was living in Los Angeles, but my husband and I got engaged, married during COVID, and then got got pregnant with our first kid, we decided to move closer to family.
And we moved to Miami when there's all sorts of changes happening, living in a new city, pregnant, and I think I was going through another identity, like what do I wanna be doing?
And I launched at the time the wallpaper because I had previously done it, But...
And I even tried to, like, have it under a different name, which is The Cartelier, which is now my substack name.
But, again, it was just you're in your twenties, and you're now you're in your thirties, and you're becoming a mom, and you're like, how do I wanna perceived?
And you're going through all these changes.
And I started experimenting with the wallpaper, but that's also like a whole other beast and a whole other world.
And I feel like it's all such a blur, especially if you have...
I had my first son.
And then at a certain point, I started to...
I was getting more...
Some different work that was a little bit more traditional, like illustration, editorial, like working with restaurants or brands, little things.
And so I felt like I needed an agent at that point.
Because I think like Soho House had reached out to me.
And I was like, okay.
这个……
This...
I feel like I'm...
I need to find someone.
And so I was connected with an agent, and it was more just like she was gonna help me for a little bit, like, incoming stuff because I wasn't really sure.
But that was like a big...
There were two things that became like game changers for me, like, part, getting an agent and also the introduction of the iPad.
Interesting.
I, again, wasn't a trained illustrator, so I've...
I do everything by hand.
So I think that's also why I didn't really explore the traditional illustrator world because I didn't, like, feel like I could do it because I do everything by hand, and I wouldn't know how to, like, edit something.
So when I got the iPad and I started, like, learning, it's, oh, I can hand draw things, scan it in, and then edit on the iPad.
And it feels...
就是……
It's...
For me, they're interchangeable.
Not interchangeable, but there's, like, the pen to paper versus, like, a Apple Pen on the iPad have such a similar, like it's still your hand guiding the line.
It's amazing now because I remember that like early days you were like, iPad, but now it's honestly hard to tell sometimes.
And I think if you again practice with it and the more time I've had on it, the better that it feels very seamless.
So I think it was like settling into like becoming a mom and again, having this like a new wave of like identity and realizing that the world of being an illustrator, I connected much more to than maybe this idea of a broad artist.
但我……
But I...
And I can pause here too because
I feel like I'm...
There's so much because it's, you know It's
fascinating.
I'm super excited to hear about how the agent was a game changer because we see so many different, we hear so many different stories inside Good Ship.
So sometimes people will, they have this idea like, I just need to get an agent.
That's the one thing between me and my dreams as an agent.
And sometimes I'll be like, I don't know, don't try too hard because you might have a shit agent.
And then I think maybe you're one of the first people actually that I've heard to say that was a game changer.
So I wanna know, is it because of the pricing help or yeah.
Is I'll let you.
I think...
You know what I will say?
Because I I feel like over the years listening to things, and I would hear that, and I'm like, ugh.
I don't have an agent, so I'm screwed kinda thing.
But in a way, I had...
I did have other people helping me, but they weren't necessarily the right fit.
So I went through this.
The agent that I got was my third agent, if you will.
But the first two were someone was like, oh, I can help you out.
And then a second person maybe worked in more of a different field, so it wasn't really...
And it was I got a lot of incoming work because of my Instagram, and they weren't necessarily procuring work and also didn't really know the world.
But what I'll say is that I don't think I was ready for the agent until I started working with her.
And we didn't even work in an official capacity at first.
She was like, I'm totally happy to help you with the stuff that's incoming, but I don't think I really knew what I wanted.
So I think it's important to say like, saying you want an agent to kick off your career or that's gonna change everything.
I think it's like you have to not be established.
I think it's like you have to know what you want because the agent can't, like, solve it for you.
I think for a while, I felt the exact way.
I'm like, if I just get an agent, they can just do it for me.
But I think I needed all those years to test things out and figure it out and have a clear sense so that when the agent and you are working together, you know what you want, like what you will say yes to, what you won't say yes to.
So Stephanie is my agent.
And I think we had a conversation like a year before we ever worked together.
And I remember saying to her like, yeah, I don't really do illustration like traditional.
And again, I didn't really know the capacity, but I think it was like my own insecurity.
Don't know what I
was If you're looking at your work like this, Carly, this is illustration.
Like what are you talking about?
Think now my agent and the agency has expanded to what they help you with because illustrators and artists do so many different things beyond just traditional illustration.
So they can help me with something like they helped me with the paperless post.
I did...
I have a collection with paperless post or weddings.
Weddings was a big thing.
And so now, like, to the part where it says, like, how does it help?
I think especially where I was in my life, and, like, I I have kids and I'm busy, but I also did not understand the full scope of what pricing should be for an illustrator.
There's kind of two sides to it.
There's the actual creation of the work, and then there's usage.
And usage is where a lot of the money is.
So I definitely got screwed over the years because when I was just doing it for myself, I'm like, oh, I'm just drawing a couple of illustrations for your menu or for this post.
But if they're using it for a week versus a month versus three months versus a year versus forever or whatever, that's a very different price.
And that's something I didn't know until I started working with my agent.
And that was a...
Was definitely a, you know, a huge difference.
And I think just I'm a middle child, a sensitive artist, I'm a people pleaser.
And when you're negotiating for yourself, it...
Not everyone has the the same personality as me, but I'm...
It's not good to be like, no.
I need more money.
I'm like, sorry.
You're a great brand.
I need it.
I think there was also for a long time, I was thinking, I need this.
This is like, they're doing this as a favor for me, the kind of exposure part of it, which I think is definitely important in the beginning.
Oh, it's just isn't it?
And this is, again, I know I'm at a different point in my career than maybe some people that are listening, but I do think paid work is...
You should be working for pay, and that's a hard thing to just negotiate for yourself.
But I did over the years, and I probably didn't get as much as I would have if working for an agent, which, again, it's...
They know more, but also they're skilled.
And when someone in a brand's dealing with an agency that's been around for a while and they explain to them why something costs what it does, they're more receptive to that.
I love that.
That was a big one for me.
Think that realization that rather than me begging them to give me work, realizing that they were actually crying out for the skills that illustration brings to the table and then being like, actually, I've got some leverage here.
I don't have to just be like, thank you so much.
And then kissing their I'm actually like, yes, it'll cost this.
And they're like, okay.
But the licensing, the usage thing, that's something Tania is really hot on.
And then the Illustration Business Club goes into it.
It's something that I really need to look into more because I've been like admittedly lazy about it over the years.
Because this is what...
I think similar personality wise as well.
A bit of me is just like, that sounds complicated.
Let's just...
This is the price and then we're done.
But I would love to actually read more about it one day.
不是。
No.
I mean, it is fascinating.
And what we were talking about in the beginning, or I forget if this was before we sort of record, but just how pricing also for illustration is so random.
And sometimes you think the really fancy fashion brands are gonna have the money.
Usually they don't.
It's the more
And I also think like when I was doing brand activation stuff, it tended to be the bigger clients that would be the most stingy and the most, oh, actually, this is the fee.
And you'll be like, that's less than I charge.
So we're gonna have to figure something out here.
而你
And you
have to decide what's worth it for you.
If like a Gucci or something wanted you to do something with them and the fee wasn't as high if you were to do something with Old Navy, let's say.
But you're maybe willing...
And and this is all, like, time and learning and figuring out, like, what you want.
I think that's really important too to say what you're willing to say less of a fee on because you do think it will help your career versus just saying yes to something for money, like that kind of whole thing.
Do you think there is a part that you get to figure out once...
If it's on your own, your decision, right?
Like, you're like, this is annoying.
This is not what I'm usually getting paid.
But if it is going to actually help exposure, When people would say to me like, oh, this will be going out to our hundreds of thousands of subscribers or there are different types of jobs.
And I thought to myself, okay, is this a type of job I'm gonna wanna continue to keep getting?
Because if not, then it should be about money.
This is to help my career so that I can take on the ones that are maybe more of the indie film that wins the Oscar kind of brand, the ones that feel more aligned with your style.
I think, like, you you wanna make sure you know exactly what you want so then you can make the decision to take on a job less.
And make sure to tell them that too.
Be like, usually my fee is higher, but maybe we can work something out on the marketing end or try to get creative in that way.
There's always the thought as well, like if a job doesn't go through, that opens up time to do your own thing and you
can work on something you're really excited about versus powering somebody else's dream that they're really excited about, but won't pay you the right amount for.
Think it's such a...
It's another like cliche or whatever to say like when one door closes another open or whatever that phrase is.
But I think it's also, there were times that I didn't get something.
And I look back, I'm like, thank God, a, I maybe wasn't ready, wasn't the right fit.
It maybe ate up time and then something else came along.
And I'm not like who who who
or whatever.
Can't think of the word.
Who will?
It could be hoo hoo as well, though.
We can bring that into circulation.
呼。
Hoo hoo.
It's not hoo hoo.
I'm not necessarily that hoo hoo.
But I feel like with work stuff, like, does pan out how it's supposed to.
You have to trust.
Like, you might be like, oh, I really wanted that job, but I really do feel like it it wasn't meant to be.
Like Even what you're saying about the agent, like, weren't ready for an agent until you'd gone and done lots of trial and error and figuring out different things and finding your voice.
Like, it's...
It's got its own thing going on, hasn't it?
The world life.
没错。
Exactly.
With kind of everything.
Let me let me peek at my notes.
So guess it's wallpaper thing.
And also, what I love about this is that you're mentioning...
I don't
know if this is on purpose, but you've got lots of income streams.
And I'm like, oh, yes.
So good.
Because I think as creatives, it's so important to have more than one, basically.
对。
Yes.
因为……
Because of...
There's so many dips and troughs.
They're both troughs.
Peaks and troughs.
In in in come times or busyness times, if you've got more than one thing happening, you can smooth out the roller coaster.
Was that intentional, or has it just evolved organically?
It was not intentional.
I think it's just...
I'm sure a lot of people that listen are like this, that when you're creative, there's definitely not like one thing you want to be doing.
And whether it's an identity thing or just creative, like you have so much going on in your brain, you want to get it out.
But I think that what's like, partly, like maybe part of it was intentional to be like, I want to be able to do certain things that don't necessarily pay as well.
So I want to have other areas.
I think what I love with the kind of illustration and why I've realized I love just what it is that I do is because it can lend itself to so many different areas.
And I think it's not spreading yourself too thin or not being distracted.
I think it's for me, they all inform the other because there's so much going on in my brain, and there's so many things that I wanna create.
And if I'm creating an...
Like, a character or I'm drawing a flower, whatever, and it may live as a post on Instagram or in, like, an invitation.
Maybe it's, like, not wanting it to just be for that one thing, but I...
It's also one medium.
You're seeing something on a screen versus if it's for a wedding, it's on an invitation.
Like, I thought what was really cool, and I think I mentioned it when I was doing the live illustrations and I met those interior designers, and they were the first to be like, oh, let's do wallpaper.
And I actually think I had another job with Soho House, which didn't end up panning out, but I did the work where they wanted me to design, like, a custom wallpaper.
So I think those two things I started...
That's also...
Now I'm realizing, like, kind of backtracking, and you said, was this intentional?
I think it was almost being open every...
I would get requests for so many different things.
And a lot of the times, I'm like, I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm gonna try to figure it out.
And I realized, like, my style of illustration is not so much color, and it was a lot of ink on paper.
I've been doing more and more color lately.
But I remember when I was designing for wallpaper, I'm like, oh, this is taking on a whole different life.
And it's cool.
Like, I can add color in different ways.
And creatively, it just...
I really enjoyed it and also just took on a different life drawing, like, one little elephant, but then that was just for Instagram, let's say.
Now all of a sudden, I'm, like, creating a pattern, and it's a whole circus theme, and it ended up being in my son's nursery.
And it's...
Then all of a sudden, you're designing wallpaper with, like, how I wanna put this piece of furniture.
And I think it's a couple of things.
It's like creatively, it's something that I like doing.
It allows you to...
I think like having that also allowed me to grow as an artist and just try new things.
But then the reverse is I could be designing a wallpaper and then love something from that and use it in another capacity.
So they're all, I think, informing the other, and I do think it's good to have different revenue streams as long as it doesn't feel like it's completely taking away.
The wallpaper is still...
Has been a trial and error, and now I finally found a partner here in Michigan who's gonna help with the business side to really let it grow.
Like, weddings and certain brand stuff was definitely, like, financially, and a lot of that stuff that I was doing more of over the past couple years and having the help of the agent was definitely helpful.
So yeah, does that answer the question?
Yes, absolutely.
I think answers it reassuringly for fellow creative brains.
Yes, it's strategic, but you weren't really time to implement some more income streams.
You were just following on what was fun and interesting.
I know you have two little boys and I wonder how has that impacted your illustration career?
Because I know you talked about you felt like an identity shift you were in Miami and now you've moved back to Michigan.
So have you found it, like in terms of time and things?
Like how has that been?
Think that when I first...
When I had...
When I became a mom for the first time, I moved from Los Angeles to Miami.
It was COVID.
I had no friends.
It was definitely a really hard time.
But I was still like the luxuries.
I was able...
You can draw from anywhere and little moments when they're sleeping.
But I think a lot of people talk about, of course, like identity crisis when you become a mom.
And, of course, there's stuff like finding time and...
For yourself and figuring that out.
But I think in a lot of ways, when you're working for yourself and you're creating your own path, like, and not having structure, I was not lost for all those years.
But when you...
When I became a mom, it's like this...
Your time becomes so much more precious, so you have to really focus, like, how do I wanna spend my time?
So it in a way crystallized everything for me.
And it was more like, what do I want out of life?
And how do I fit what I'm doing into that?
And I, like, of course, like, I'm...
You have the luxury of people helping me, and I have childcare, and I have family, and I have support, and I'm aware not everyone can have that.
But if you have that ability, I think knew what I wanted.
I wanna be a hands on mom.
I wanna also work, and it's do...
I realized the idea of this grand artist and painting and doing these huge things.
Like, people work that in, but I know that what I really liked about what I did and really like claiming being an illustrator is like I can really do it from anywhere, and that was important, and to be able to have kids and balance the work.
And I think it helps that I enjoy it.
I've definitely...
I remember last year or two years ago, like, December 12, my agent got a request from, like, a big brand that they wanted me to do some, like, holiday card What?
在……
In...
周末。
The weekend.
And I work pretty quick, and it's, like, ridiculous.
But it was a brand I really liked, and I was like to my husband, what do you...
Like, I I feel like I have to say yes.
He's like, we'll figure it out.
This was before we even...
In Michigan.
He took the kids, and I was, like, working throughout the weekend to do this.
It's crazy, and you make it work or you...
I don't know.
我……
I I...
But I think, again, like, becoming a mom, there was a part of me also when they started school.
I like the structure.
As someone who doesn't have structure, I like, okay.
I have drop off, and then I come back, and then I have this many hours, and then I have to do pickup again.
And then I come back, and I have help, which is good.
But, like, in a weird way, that also...
I liked that.
I liked having now structure.
And I...
I don't know.
I feel like it's just I love being a mom, and I, like, enjoy it so much.
And so I'm just constantly figuring out a way of where is this all gonna fit in and where do I wanna be putting my time.
And again, I know I've been doing this for ten plus years, so I have maybe a little bit more of a luxury of getting to decide certain things.
And then I think also just having kids, like, you're in a whole new world.
I think children's...
I just finished illustrating a children's book for someone else for the first time, which I think I was saying to you may have been one of how I found you guys initially because I've never illustrated a children's book.
I am not trained in this, so I was just, like, trying to consume as much as possible to, like, learn about that world.
But, yeah, like, I I feel like having two little boys, two kids, like, in terms of, like, the children's illustration world and, like, creating stuff for kids, that's really fun.
I'm constantly writing down funny things that they say.
是的。
Yes.
And you're...
I have so many children's books.
I also have now become a huge collector of, like, vintage children's books, and that's a whole other good
stuff out there.
Even, like, cartoons now are good.
Like, blue y stuff.
I'm obsessed.
I love it.
So, yeah, I don't know if that kind of answered that, but
算的。
it does.
And I love that it flips on its head because a lot of people, they talk about having children and then they're like, my career is over and my identity is gone.
And you're describing the opposite.
Like it crystallized.
They're really good prioritizes.
对。
Yes.
What do you actually wanna do?
You've got six hours till I'm back.
是的。
Yes.
Do with it what you will.
And you're like, oh, okay.
哇。
Wow.
做什么
What do
I wanna do?
没错。
Exactly.
And I think also when you...
In a way, when you know you have a lot of time, you maybe don't get to something right away.
Like, it's like a kind of double edged sword before having kids and having a lot more time.
But it just structures.
It puts in that structure and helps you to focus a lot more, which again, I know it's like our career is very different than if someone is something more traditional.
They may have an identity crisis because it is a lot harder.
But if you are in our world, I don't know.
I don't want people to be scared of becoming a mom and completely losing her identity.
And again, it might happen, but I think that there's a way it can make it even better, which I feel like it did for me.
Yeah, definitely.
And I remember this is just like in my life, but it was almost like if I needed to go away for work, that is acceptable reason to find childcare and lean on family for help.
Whereas if I want to go away for like just doing nothing, that's not acceptable.
It's almost like sometimes going away for work is very relaxing and fun and I enjoy my job.
And then I can come back a day later and be like, thank you my child now.
Yes, good.
But again, think it's totally different for corporate people that don't like their jobs.
As illustrators, we have the luxury of hopefully enjoying what we do.
Yes, is nice that get to enjoy what we do.
对。
Yes.
But you have a very exciting thing.
Is your book out already or is it coming out very soon?
It's coming out in two weeks, September 8.
Oh, that's exciting.
What's it called?
The Character Study Observations from a Very Curious Artist, fits beautifully into what we were talking about, the observations.
对。
Yes.
The comedy observations, drawing observations.
So it's been, I think it was like a two and a half year process and a lot of work.
And it's like each chapter is like a different place.
It's my world of observation.
So it's like museums, parks, restaurants, like a fashion party, farmer's market, beach.
And it's like some...
It's a lot of archival work, but then a lot of new work of just, you know, with my little writings in and observations.
And it's, like, hard to always describe it's like this hybrid coffee table giftable book.
It's smaller, but it's a 192 pages.
And it's...
It's red, so it's very
like holiday feel.
Do they...
Is that the goal then?
Is it like a holiday...
Like Christmas time?
不是。
No.
A pop of red is always just my my style.
It just happens to feel like very aligns very well.
But I think they...
It definitely feels like it will be like a nice little gift.
And it's just...
It's wild because you just had your book.
So I'm like, there's so much work ahead of time, and there's all this preorders, and you gotta do all this stuff, and it's...
我……
I'm...
I, like, forget that now it's just gonna live in the world, and I'm so excited just for...
To see people, like, hold it and have it on their desks and coffee tables and bathrooms.
I don't know, wherever.
Like it's such a
It's amazing to see how the publishing process works as well.
Like you've mentioned the long timelines.
Imagine saying to somebody in 2020, trying to do a book and you say, yeah, you'd known at that point, it would take six years.
You'd be like
I don't know.
Isn't that wild?
It's a
bit too long actually.
Let's say by the time Salty Dog and Pals came out, I'd actually forgotten what the stories were.
Like, when I did relook at them, oh, yeah, these are good.
Who wrote these?
Oh, it was me and Helen.
Just Yeah.
Because it is so long.
And Helen's just finished the second drawings, the drawings of the second book.
And I think they're aiming to come out next year, but that's like rushing it and getting it quickly out.
So like just years and years, it's mad.
I imagine like a first book probably too, and you're either so much...
I mean, it's like, because it wasn't like the book took six years.
It's like the the process of it all.
But it's crazy because I'm like, Okay, I want to do another one.
You know, I was going say, do you want to do another one if
you enjoyed it?
I do.
I like I might want to do a children's book next.
I have the idea.
And you're in the course so you can, you know.
Yeah, I have the stories out.
I just...
有……
There's...
我……
I...
就是……
It's just...
I love the idea of, like, the...
Something that everyone can have.
就是……
It's...
As I'm sure you feel, especially live illustration, like, the stuff that I've done over the years.
很难……
It's hard to...
Not everyone can get the wallpaper or the print or be it in a live illustration.
So to have something that everyone can have that's affordable and it's not so precious and it's just like a tangible thing is really cool.
It's quite permanent as well, isn't it?
A book.
Oh, it's real.
I don't know.
It's permanent.
I'm like, Oh my God, hope it's like,
It's not precious.
It's like, Oh my God.
I hope everyone loves it.
I'll put all the links and things in the show notes.
People can find your book and your wallpaper and your website and your Instagram.
But it's been so good to hear about your journey and how you've come to illustration, a full time illustration career without a formal education.
Because I think so many listeners will be like, oh, good.
It's reassuring that you don't have to go to art school.
Oh yeah.
And especially like with what you guys offer, like I was saying that when I started like ten years ago to now, what's available to just be able to educate yourself, even doing this for ten years, like in this area of like children's book and that world, like I just spend hours watching different like online courses, and so I think it's like really great that you guys share that, and I think that's a luxury that's available now today that there's so many resources that you can teach and just do it, do a little bit every day.
So good to have you, Carly.
It was
