So it's a book with 52 chapters.

And Lamentations is also written by Jeremiah.

So that's a book with five chapters Lamentations as is pretty much Jeremiah's eyewitness account of the siege and the destruction of Jerusalem that Nebuchadnezzar, he destroyed Jerusalem and burned the city with fire in May.

So that that's kind of the backdrop of Jeremiah is that the prophetic range was about 400 in Israel.

So there's about four hundred years where there's prophets prophesying, giving the message from God to the people.

This, this book of Jeremiah takes place at the pinnacle, the height of the central event of the prophetic period is the destruction of the temple, actually.

So Jeremiah is an eyewitness of this event.

And he has, he has some contemporaries that we're, that we're familiar with.

Daniel is one of his contemporaries, which was, Daniel was taken away in the first deportation from Jerusalem.

So, so at the fall of Jerusalem, before the city was destroyed and burned with fire, before the temple was burned with fire, there, there were, there was a deportation where a certain number of number of people around 10,000.

It says in second Kings 24, that around 10,000 people were taken captive and deported to Babylon.

And Daniel was among those who were taken in that first deportation.

Jeremiah survived all three of these deportations and Yeah, he he ministered in Jerusalem while the others were taken away.

There's another big name, another prophet, Ezekiel.

He was taken in the second deportation.

So Daniel was taken with the first, Ezekiel was taken with the second, but Jeremiah remained and he witnessed the whole destruction from beginning to end of Jerusalem.

These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders of the exiles.

And to the priests and the prophets and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile.

So we actually can read in Daniel nine:two, Daniel says that he read this letter that Jeremiah sent, and that's how he knew that the exile would only be seventy years.

So he took much encouragement from the letter and he trusted and believed that this is only going to last seventy years.

So that long period of four hundred years of the prophets and being warned to repent in turn resulted in this captivity and this deportation that lasted seventy years in Babylon.

So it's interesting.

A good way to remember is that there's three separate deportations and then there's three separate returns.

Two back to the land after the seventy years is over.

The first return was under Zerubbabel.

The second return was under Ezra, and the third return was under Nehemiah.

So they were taken away in three sets and they were they came back and returned seventy years later in three three sets.

So the Babylonians, they're the ones that all three times are taken captive.

And this was kind of a way in the ancient times with empires that they would, when they would conquer a land, they would re, they would reassign people groups to different parts of their empire, which produced a lot of unfamiliarity with the region, unfamiliarity with the way that land was governed and that would give the Empire more control over that region.

So so we have a lot to get into today just as far as the prophet here.

I was thinking, you know, for Jeremiah himself.

So that was a great just, you know, giving us a broad stroke of just like the whole lay of the land here.

And now Jeremiah himself, I mean, the first thing that pops up and I recognize is just his calling.

But at a very young age, I think that is very unique too as well today.

I feel like there's a lot of young people, you know, who are maybe proclaiming their faith, searching for faith.

All these different things, you know.

I I don't know if you'd watch Instagram a lot, that's like young, like he's a young kid.

But for a young man, so he was about, they say, like 17 to 20 years old.

Like, that's that's incredible right there.

And then and then God but God called him and like, can somebody young follow God?

Can somebody young have a call on their life from God?

And the answer is yes.

Paul says that to Timothy as well.

Don't don't let them despise your youth.

I mean, there's a lot of examples of of young people in the Bible.

King Josiah was eight years old when he became the king.

Just like that little little preacher guy on Instagram.

Right?

Eight years old.

Yeah.
大卫击杀歌利亚时，还只是十几岁的少年。
David, when he when he slayed Goliath, he was in his early teens.

He must have been like a small boy running up to a giant.

Yeah.

You know, but what did he have?
他拥有信心。
He had faith.
他有使命。
He had a calling.

And it is a great great point that that we can just read it in Jeremiah one, right?

In verse four, God says to Jeremiah, Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.

And that's an amazing point there is that our call is is more than flesh and bones.

It's more than flesh and blood, but it's eternal and it's spiritual and it's from God.

Right?

Yeah.

Our calling is from God and He called us from before the world began, before He formed the world.

That's an amazing thing.

And that gives us a lot of purpose in our life, you know?

Yeah.
我觉得世界上很多人大概都在寻找人生的意义。
Like I think maybe a lot of a lot of people in the world are looking for purpose in their life.
你知道，他们或许在努力赚钱、建立事业或组建家庭，这些都是好事，但我们更需要一些更深的东西——那就是来自上帝的永恒使命。
You know, maybe they're trying to make money or trying to build a career or a family, all good things, but we need something a little deeper, which is the eternal purpose that comes from God.

Yeah.

That's that's our calling.

And what better, like, I mean, as we dive into like Jeremiah, like, you'll see his just life and his ministry.

It was a difficult ministry and very unique.

But I love it because he is really solidifying him and telling him, I know exactly who you are before, you know, like, you're even a thought, you know, and your parents, you know.

And like, I I have sanctified you, it says before, and I have ordained this, like, like, his ministry was tough.

It was long, and there is a lot of they call him the weeping prophet.

We'll get into that and just but it's great because God called me and then, okay, what if my ministry it doesn't look like there's much fruit.

There's a lot of pain.

I feel like the words I can't I don't really want to maybe preach the hard words in a way.

But God, you had a specific ministry for Jeremiah.

And and he called him to do that.

And so just like he was maybe us today, we could say maybe these are, you know, hard words that we could read from the Bible and but are we called to preach them?

So just along with that point, just to further the backdrop of this book is that, so the kingdom, if we can just think about the kings of Israel for a minute, the we first king who was King Saul, right?

We have the second king, King David, and then we have the third king who is King Solomon.

And after that point in Israel's history, the nation of Israel becomes a divided nation, That they break away and King Jeroboam becomes the King of the North, the King of Israel, which is the Northern 10 tribes.

And then King Rehoboam in first Kings 12, he becomes the King of the Southern Kingdom, which is made up of two tribes, Judah and Benjamin.

Now, the Northern Kings, they, there were no good kings in the eyes of the Lord.

They're all wicked.

They all did what was wrong in God's eyes, what was evil in His sight.

Now, they were taken captive one hundred years before the book of Jeremiah takes place.

So actually the Assyrian Empire was there's three major, empires that are at play in this time period.

One is the Assyrian Empire in the North Of The Middle East.

One is the Babylonian Empire, which is gaining influence and power in the East.

And then the Egyptian Empire, which is starting to grow a little stronger during this time.

And the Assyrian Empire, one hundred years prior to the book of Jeremiah, they took away Israel in the capital, Samaria, captive, and they were inching their way towards Jerusalem.

But then in Isaiah thirty six and thirty seven, we have this amazing story of how King Hezekiah gets on his knees before God and he repents and he asks for God to deliver them.

So the Angel of the Lord, he goes and he strikes down 185,000 Assyrians in one night and their army is dispersed.

And Jerusalem is saved from destruction because King Hezekiah repented and Isaiah interceded.

Very good.

So the backdrop of Isaiah, the book of Isaiah, is that the Assyrian Empire was dominant in coming for Jerusalem, but they were delivered.

And now the backdrop of Jeremiah is that the Babylonian Empire is coming to take over Jerusalem.

Yes.

Okay.

And in the Kingdom Of Judah at this time is very minimal.

It's very weak and it's not influential as it once was.

They're reduced, all of the surrounding regions are reduced and taken over by the Philistines, the Edomites, the Moabites, all the other nations are growing stronger And Jerusalem and the Kingdom Of Judah is growing much weaker.

So they're at this precipice of this nation, Babylon, coming to take them captive.

But the people are in rampant idolatry, rampant paganism, and they're they're worshiping other gods and they're sacrificing to these other gods on the roofs of their houses, on the high places, in the fields.

And this is part of Jeremiah's message.
悔改吧，转离你们的恶行，修正你们的道路。
Repent and turn from your ways, amend your ways.

You, how can you be sacrificing to these idols and these other gods into the, it says in one of them, the Queen of Heaven, which is the Ashtoreh, this God Ashtoreh.

How can you be sacrificing to the Queen of Heaven when you go into the temple?
你们不可能同时做这两件事。
You can't be doing both at the same time.
你们必须修正自己的道路。
Like you have to amend your ways.

So this is a book of Jeremiah and he's called the weeping prophet because he is proclaiming God's message.

He knows the character of God and the love of God, but he sees how wicked the people are,

Wow.

How far their hearts have gone from God and how they're they're they're worshiping these idols, but they're also not taking care of the fatherless.

They're not taking care of the widow and the sojourner, the immigrant, and they're shedding innocent blood.

So there is like a very wicked nation at this point.

So that's kind of the backdrop is is comparing the Assyrians invading Israel and the Babylonians now on the verge of taking Jerusalem.

I like like what you're saying just like, you know, he is a weeping prophet because, like, this is God really living through him.

But God still is gracious and merciful and sent him anyway.

Now you got a guy like Jeremiah who was actually like weeping and breaking and these are his people.

Like, these are probably his friends, his family, people that he knows that are around him.

And so, like, you could, like, relate that to yourself today.

Like, you have family members and, you know, you know, maybe they're not, you know, praising Ashter or whatnot.

You know, one of the ways that a city was overtaken in these times is that they would build siege works against the city.

So when Jerusalem was eventually taken, the Babylonians, they built a siege around the city and they wouldn't let no one come out and no one go in.

So you can imagine what would happen that there would be famine, there would be a lack of food, that there would be a lack of water, that there would be a lack of cleanliness and hygiene in the city over a number of months.

So there, Jeremiah is describing this scene in Lamentations and just how bad it gets.

Maybe they think that my trouble means that God has left me.

And maybe it's hard to see past the trouble.

I mean, and there's so many examples of what trouble is in my life or someone's life, right?

What is the trouble in your life today?

Well, the question is, is God in the trouble?

And we can say without a doubt reading Jeremiah 29 that yes, God is in the trouble.

You know, he's there and he has he has allowed it for my growth.

And then verse eight, for since I spake so I spake the word, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil because of the word of the Lord was made of reproach unto me and a derision daily.

Yeah.

Like, can you relate to that in a in a way just like you're preaching the word and kind of it seems like it's doing the opposite of what, you know, we would think it gives life and it does all this.

But really, he says a couple hard words that made me a derision and reproach.

And a reproach is an outcast.

Do you actually read that thing?

And then, like, laugh and mock at you.

And maybe you haven't gotten it to this extent, but maybe there are coming time down the road where people will try to make you feel ashamed of the gospel, you know.

But I love how Jeremiah keeps keeps saying the word.

And this is not saying that the word is he's not like blaming God emotionally in a way.

But he's just saying this is I'm gonna speak this word and it's gonna produce this effect.

And it's really bothering him in a way.

But it would anybody, you know, if I have to say these hard things to a friend, like, yeah, it's gonna bother me, but I'm because he's doing it out of love.

Like, he's doing it from a place of love, and he knows that judgment has to come.

But it reminds me of the first Corinthians one eighteen, like the foolishness of preaching, like of the cross.

It's foolishness to others, but to others it's the power of salvation.

Like there's gonna be two different hearers kind of, and that's when we're preaching the word in the world.

We're gonna get mocked.

You know, people will laugh at us, but we shouldn't feel ashamed in a way, you know, because God has called us to do that.

And so I love Jeremiah's just like, yeah.

His heart for the people and just his willingness to obey the word, you know, and to, even at a young age, even in captivity, he's there with them.

But he's still like, there's something deeper that Jeremiah knows.

And what what allows him to keep going, but I I think it's that he was called.

If I say I will not mention Him or speak anymore in His name, there is in my heart as it were a burning fire.

Wow.

A burning fire.
他说：这火关锁在我骨中，我憋不住，也无力压抑。
He says it's shut up in my bones and I am weary withholding it in and I cannot.
哇哦。
Wow.
是的
Yeah.
这太奇妙了。
That's amazing.
当我们经历过神的作为，当我们将这珍宝放在心里，我们真能压抑得住吗？
When we have seen something with God, when we have the treasure in our heart, are we able to really hold it back?
我们或许会压抑它，比如，我不想跟那个人谈基督，或者类似的事情。
We can suppress it, you know, like, oh, maybe I don't want to like talk to that person about Christ or whatever it is.

But when we have the calling and we know that we're called because God has done it, it's a part of our salvation is that we are called.

And when we have tasted and seen that the Lord is good, and when we have, when we know that Christ is the treasure, then we can't help it.

We have to, because it's not us, but it's that incorruptible seed that's been put inside of us.

It's that deep calling to deep, right?

And the Holy Spirit works in our life where He's producing that life that we have to speak up.

Yes.

Because we have the answer in this life.

We have the answer.

We know that this is not the end.

And that's a big, that's a big thread through this book.

The the idea is that Jeremiah hears the Word of the Lord and God says that someone is going to come to you and ask you to buy the field.

Now that's a pretty, pretty normal thing that we would buy a piece of property as people.

But the interesting thing is that this is during the siege, that the siege is currently going on outside.

The the cities are aligned with soldiers.

The the city is surrounded by Babylonians.

And God says to Jeremiah, I want you to buy a field.

And then a man comes to

him and says, Jeremiah, you have the right of redemption for this field.
你会买吗？
Would you buy it?

So he weighs it out.

I think it's 17 shekels.
他付了十七舍客勒的银子，有证人在场，他们签了合同，就买下了那块地。
He gives 17 shekels of silver and they have a witness and they signed the contract and he buys the field.
就在围城期间。
During the siege.
对吧？
Right?
但这正是希望的象征。
But that is a picture of hope.
在耶利米书32章42节的结尾，上帝说：‘我怎样使这一切大灾祸临到这百姓，我也必照样使他们得着我应许他们的一切福乐。'
And the message is at the end of 32, Jeremiah 32 and verse 42, God says, Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promised them.
在这片你们说已荒凉、无人无兽的土地上，田地仍将被购买。
Fields shall be bought in this land of which you are saying it is a desolation without man or beast.
在便雅悯地，田地将用银钱购买，契约将被签署、封印并见证。
Fields shall be bought for money and deeds shall be signed and sealed and witnessed in the land of Benjamin.
所以他是在说，仍有希望。
So he's saying that there is hope.

Yeah.

All around the city is surrounded.
城外有祸患，城内人们正因饥饿和干渴而死去。
There's trouble all outside and within people are dying and starving and thirsting.
外有祸患，内有灾殃。
There's trouble without, there's trouble within.
但通过这块地，因为有一天人们会购买土地，有一天他们会重新耕种，有一天这座城市将被重建。
But by this field, because one day people will be purchasing land, one day they will be growing crops again, one day this city will be rebuilt.
对我们今天而言，应用在于：我能否透过我的困境看到希望？
And the application for us today is, can I see through my trouble?

我能否以信心透过我的困境，相信神最终会将它变为美善？耶利米就是这样做的，因为他买了那块地。
Can I see through my trouble with faith, believing that God will turn it into good eventually one And Jeremiah does because he buys that field?
他买了那块地。
He buys that field.

And we know that they do end up returning.

The Jews do end up returning.
他们最终重建了圣殿。
They end up rebuilding the temple.

They end up rebuilding the city and the walls and that that is the city in which the Messiah will walk.

A thirty seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin, king of Judah.

I got to skip all over the information.

He was graciously freed.
他仁慈地释放了犹大王约雅斤，把他从监狱中带出来，对他温言相待，并赐予他高于与他一同在巴比伦的众王的座位。
He graciously freed King Jehoiachin and brought him out of prison and spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat above the seats of the Kings who were with him in Babylon.
于是国王脱下了囚服，终生每日在国王的餐桌上吃饭。
So the King put off his prison garments and ate every day the rest of his life at the King's table.
对吧？
Right?
所以，在经历了这一切挣扎、心酸、痛苦和试炼之后，这本书以一丝希望结束——这位国王在巴比伦得到了恩宠。
So there's, after all of these struggles, after all these heartaches, after all of the pain and the trials, there's a little the book ends with a glimmer of hope that that this king was given favor in Babylon.

The seed of the King of Judah was was prolonged and the seed lives.

And in this, in this little glimmer of hope, see that the seed of the woman continues.

The line of King David, right?
大卫王的血脉继续延续，且有盼望。
The line of King David continues and there's hope.
对吧？
Right?
这本书以这样一种令人惊叹的方式结束。
So that's an amazing way that this book ends.

It's mostly sad.

Most of it is sad.

Most of it is depressing.

Most of it, Jeremiah is weeping.

But we have the field that he buys the field because there's hope.

And the king of Babylon gives grace to the king of Judah above all the other kings.

There's hope at the very end.

Don't sell it off.

And it doesn't mean it also doesn't mean that we're ignoring the pain.

We're not ignoring the suffering.

We're not belittling it, know, making making someone feel like, you know, your pain is not that important or it's not that much.

No, that's not the message at all.

And that there is the glory that comes after the suffering.

Romans eight eighteen, the glory that shall be revealed is not worthy of being compared to the suffering.

It's just so much greater, so much more.

The weight is so much more.

So by faith we can see through, but it's not that we're that's not that we have this hope that we are like, you know, it's going to be okay, but it's that God is the one that initiates that.

God is the one that initiated it to Jeremiah, you know, by the field.
而我们只是凭着信心表示认同。
And we are just simply agreeing by faith.

Right?
两个人若不同心，岂能同行？
How can two walk together unless they're agreed?

We're just agreeing with God.

That's that's faith.

That's our response to faith.

How do like the Bible, like that was so beautiful.

And like how do like, you know, how do we know and have this hope?

You know, it's because of this word.

And Jeremiah was definitely, I mean, we know a little bit about maybe his upbringing, you know, we know his father, but he was a man of the word.

And I think that's what the word does.

It really produces hope.

You may not see it now, but it will.

Yeah, like what is the fruit of our life going to be at the end?

We really don't know.

Like we really don't know how much or how or how little that faith will bring, you know, but it's committed to God and it doesn't matter what we see in this life.

But God is going to produce something so much greater.

And when we see Him, we'll be like Him.

Maybe I just have one more important thing.

So the overview of Jeremiah, one important thing that we can't forget to mention is that the premise for this, the premise for this captivity and this destruction in this deportation is in Jeremiah 11.

And that's a sermon that Jeremiah gives.
这篇讲道讲的是人民如何违背了上帝的约。
And the sermon is about the people and how they have broken God's covenant.
对吧？
Right?
你可以读一读，他们违背了上帝的约，而这种审判是上帝在西奈山与以色列所立之约的一部分。
So you can read that through that they've broken the covenant of God and that this judgment is a part of the agreement that God made with Israel on Mount Sinai.

Right?

If you break the covenant, if you don't obey me, this is what's going to happen.

But there's a specific chapter in Jeremiah where we don't have everywhere else in our anywhere else in our Bible, other than the New Testament, which is in Jeremiah 33, and it introduces the New Covenant, right?

And this is the New Covenant in verse 14 onwards.

He will fulfill the promise.

And this new covenant is the premise for the work of Christ in the New Testament in Hebrews eight, right?

It's the new covenant that God has written His law upon our hearts.
所以在一切苦难之中，既有违背约的后果，也有上帝说：我要立新约，这新约将基于我的信实和我的作为，你们只需领受。
So amidst all the struggling, there's the consequences of breaking the covenant, but there's also God saying, I'm going to make a new covenant and this new covenant is going to be based on My faithfulness and based on My work and all you do is receive.

Right?

And that's called in theological terms, it's a unilateral covenant.

It's a one-sided covenant that God is making and man can be a part of it by receiving it.

The same with the Abrahamic covenant was a one unilateral covenant that God made.

But that's a high point in this book is that the new covenant is introduced, excuse me, in the middle of the most painful experience the nation has gone through.

Would say one of in Bible college, one of my friends said, he asked me if, have you ever seen, like, you ever started watching a movie from like halfway through?

And it was like a really good movie.

The ending was great and it went really well.

I was like, yeah, of course.
我错过了前半部分。
I missed the first part.

But when you watch the movie the whole way through, you get the whole context and then you get the end of the story and then it fits, right?

Everything fits so well.

And that's the same way with our Bible is that if we can read the Gospels and the epistles and Romans and we get the end of the story, but the Old Testament is the full picture.

The full picture gives us the depth and the wisdom and the knowledge of God and the riches of God in His plan.

The very same city that was surrounded by Babylonians and was destroyed and burned with fire is the same city that Christ walked into.

He rode into on the donkey.

It was rebuilt.

So this book has a, it's a lot in our Old Testament reading and studying practice and discipline into reading it.

But when we understand we have a fuller picture of God's glory and God's plan and God's sovereignty, and that affects my life directly because I trust Him.
