Good morning, folks.
That music means it's time for the grace hour, a beautiful Christian program that dives into the lives of believers and really gives them the substance for, what their faith is built on or ask the questions and hopefully provide some answers about what our faith is built on.
We're here in the studios on a beautiful Baltimore day.
It is.
We're here in Baltimore.
I'm with pastor Gary Groenewold, and, great to be with you.
I'm pastor Barry Quirk, and we have a kind of a unique topic this week.
We've we've had the visitor here on campus for the weekend for our services and for today and tomorrow, and that's been Brad Hambrick.
And, he's been speaking a lot about friendship and, godly anger and counseling and different things.
And so one of the topics that we wanted to discuss today was what does it mean in our, the overall topic of the week, which is walking with the hurting.
And specifically for us today, how can I be a friend to someone who is hurt?
是的。
Yes.
And we know that this is a great topic to speak about.
We know that pain in somebody's life can come for a lot of different reasons.
Right?
We we heard Brad speak actually this morning in a session about how, you know, we care for both sin and for suffering.
They're not necessarily cared for the same way.
Right?
Somebody who has sinned is in need of a touch from God, but also somebody who is suffering has a different need.
And it's not just receive grace and go on, but there may be lingering effects or lingering challenges that are in a believer's life.
And so we just wanna talk a little bit about that today.
And I would say right off the bat, we know that a friend is, one who loves at all times.
Right?
Is born for adversity in Proverbs seventeen seventeen.
But that love is not sentimental love.
Right?
It's the kind of love that tells the truth.
是的。
Yeah.
But does so in a way that is not full of slogans and fix its, but it's full of life.
And so let's talk about that this morning.
好的。
Okay.
对。
Yeah.
So we've got a lot of things to talk about.
I would love to talk on.
So a friend loves at all times.
He has someone that's hurt.
Let's talk about, love there.
Because, if someone is hurt, that person is an individual.
Right?
Mhmm.
And and he loves at all times.
It's not like I love you because I know somebody else has fixed the same problem as you and I'm gonna help you.
That hurt that that person has is unique to them.
对。
Yeah.
No one else has their background, their baggage.
You know, I'm not saying that in a bad way, but just, you know, history of their lives, none of it is ever the same.
It can be a similar instance that you know of of somebody else, but that pain is unique to that person.
明白。
Mhmm.
好的。
Okay.
I think that's we we would love to categorize and say, I've got about five categories where I help people or if you're really good, I got eight categories.
But no, you see a friend as an individual.
I think that's one of the greatest ways.
I mean, that's what love actually is.
Right?
You see the individual and you love them.
So now if you add hurt onto that, okay, you still love them.
Okay?
And and you don't you don't dissolve their uniqueness because they have a hurt and put it in a category like, oh, I know how to fix him because of this, but you love him as an individual.
And I think that's something that's very, very important as we dissect that verse that you brought up.
Yeah, what a thought.
I mean, we also spoke a little bit this weekend, about the the difference of mentality verse of a flock, you know, that there there is a flock like Jesus Yes.
Speaks to the flock in a certain way, and he leads and guides us and puts us in pastures where there's mercy that's rich and abundant.
But then there's also sheep.
Right?
Individual sheep.
And what's defined for the for the flock, you know, lay down in my mercy, just receive, just you know, maybe the sheep have need.
Maybe one of the sheep has gone astray.
Right?
But Jesus is faithful to leave the 99 and go after the one Right.
With the state with the purpose of restoring to the flock.
But there is an individuality to a person who's hurting and in need.
And I think one of the beautiful things about our ministry to somebody like that is that we can listen without judging.
Right?
That we can listen.
And I I love this thought about being all things to all men.
Right?
First Corinthians.
Being all things to all men does not mean that we in first Corinthians nine twenty one and twenty two, that we are you know, we just make believe.
Right?
But we to the weak, we become as weak.
You know, that we and it doesn't mean that Paul wasn't saying that he compromised or he became a a drunkard in order to minister to the drunkard, but he put himself in the place of somebody who was experiencing that suffering or that trouble or that difficulty.
And he became as like one of them so that he could minister to them.
But the purpose was not just to have a ministry there that took on an identity of ministry, but it was like, let's minister to the person with the purpose of the gospel bringing that person out of that trouble.
是的。
Yes.
而且
And
it's and that's really what love is.
Right?
Love is willing to go and put on the hip high waiters and wade into the situation with somebody with the with the desire not to stay there and to have a hip high waiter ministry.
对。
Yeah.
But to to walk out of it together and to bring that person to God.
是的。
Yeah.
And it's a that's kind of a beautiful thought that God is in the restoration business and and sometimes uses us to make that happen.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
He was saying, as you were saying before about but we don't love with sentimental love.
是的。
Yes.
But I just to say that we identify with that person.
And we're not saying like, have a break on, my foot is on the break already.
This is gonna be sentimentality.
This is a unique individual and I have to listen to him.
是的。
Yes.
好的。
Okay.
And this this sentimentality is is we could receive it as a projection of I'm being sentimental now.
Let God show you, you know, as you're listening to that person, you know, what is sentimental because you're gonna learn because if you're saying, well, this is sentimental now, you're gonna put the brakes on because your foot is on that brake and you're gonna say, oh, I'm being sentimental because we you're you're afraid that I can't help that person, you know, because in a, you know, it's sentimental or he's gonna take up my time.
But this is the other thing.
And when we love like that, pastor Barry, we get energy, we get the power of God.
We have a a capacity to actually love people more.
Where there's faith, there's more faith.
Where it gets faith.
And so it's it's it's it has to be in that package of of this is gonna be God giving me that ability to to love.
好。
Okay.
I mean, you've your vow with your wife.
I'm gonna, you know, how far did that vow go?
对。
Yeah.
And that's that's love, right, for a person and, you know, till death do us part.
And, you know, in a sense, we make that commitment to a friend.
Do you know I mean?
It's it's not and we wanna go beyond the barriers of what I call sentimentality because it's it's like it's our protection mechanism sometimes to go deeper with a friend that I've never gone in that direction with before.
And I I, you know, maybe somebody else I go deeper in another direction, but this leaves us with these many sides of of of loving people.
And therefore, for a hurting person, we also don't have the the mechanism to to stop.
对。
Mhmm.
We're we're willing to go with them and stay there with them and stay where and and and, you know, try to identify we try, ask God, how can I identify?
I can never perfectly identify, you know, with them, you know, how deep is that wound.
And but I just thinking of that, as you said, love them.
And so people get burnt out if they they're thinking about this, but how do you love a hurting person?
And then, yeah.
Anyway, that was just a thought.
对。
Yeah.
Well, it's not a formula for certain, right?
It's definitely not a formula.
Like how do you love somebody that's hurting?
Where does God design, you know, draw the line in his design?
And I think the beautiful thing about it is there's care and that care is patient and it's long suffering.
And those are things that are fruits of God of the spirit.
Right?
They're they're minister to somebody, walk with them, sit with them, weep with them, mourn with them, encourage them.
Right?
And this is what I love about about exhortation, is that exhortation, that word exhort does not mean to, like, scold or correct somebody.
It means to lead or guide.
It means to come alongside.
Means to strengthen somebody in their redemption.
And that's where it's not sentimental.
If somebody's hurting, we say, oh my gosh.
I'm so sorry you're hurting.
You know?
Let don't first of all, we don't give them some kind of, well, I guess God allowed it.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
对。
Right.
It's a fix it statement that immediately turns the person off to what we're saying.
是的。
Yeah.
Like, well, I don't ex I'm not experiencing that victory that God has in it for me quite yet.
是的。
Yes.
But let's show them the faithfulness of God that even while we're in that situation, that he meets us right where we're at.
And the the encouragement for the person is not an in the box cardboard cutout statement, you know, a cookie cutter statement.
对。
Right.
But it's the personal love of God.
Just like God loved us personally right where we were at.
是的。
Yes.
That this comes in, and it's a personal love from God.
是的。
Yes.
And it is willing to wait on God and to see.
You know, I it's funny.
I remember this is completely off topic, but when we used to do sales together a long time ago.
对。
Yeah.
And I remember being initially in appointments with you and you and I asked you how do you know when the right time to say something is?
And you always told me, like, there's no categorized, you know, like, it's not, there's no formula, but it's you gotta wait until you have gathered enough information.
对。
Yeah.
And you wait and gather the information, then find out what somebody is really desiring.
对。
Yes.
You can't go in there and tell them what they're desiring.
哇。
Wow.
Great.
And this is really the point with a friend who's hurting.
You know?
Like, first of all, let's find out why are they hurting.
对。
Yeah.
What are they hurting from?
And then with God's leading and guiding, love them in the midst of it, but also help them to get loved through it Yeah.
And hopefully at some point out of it.
对。
Yeah.
Just imagine if someone went through something traumatic, just like say for instance, like molestation.
好的。
Okay.
And we also have, we think we have victory over something, but something can trigger, you know, maybe I think I have victory over something, but it can trigger something that's happened in my mind and it causes a reflection in my mind.
And that hurt can resurface in someone's life.
And in a Christian's life, that's he's been walking fine with God.
是的。
Yes.
And and and not to think that, like, he has to be a a strong person because I've seen him as a strong person or I know him as a strong person or he's he's but I can I can I can be his friend at that time?
And maybe he needs he needs a bridge to go over something in his life.
And I I wanna I wanna be able to be approachable so that I can I can hear that and we can make that bridge in life?
Like, we're we're hearing from Brad, you know, this, you know, this this sensitivity to people.
And you you you want that you want that sense of care that you can give from the Holy Spirit to somebody else.
You don't know you don't know the the complexity of a hurt, actually.
So and it's beautiful.
Isn't it beautiful to, like, when you care like that, how you formulate from God?
You're you're a priest.
You're you're interceding for that person.
And you're you're you're a priest.
I think that's my word for the year.
But you're listening to God, and and and you're listening to that person, and God is using you.
God is is using you as a means to reach that person's needs.
So this is why ministry is so effectual.
In the minister and then the person being ministered to.
So what does he do?
He gets a unique answer from God.
And just that type of identification, you know, melt somebody's heart so they know that that they care.
And this is, you know, that they how can we build that bridge?
对。
Mhmm.
Do know what I mean?
You know, at this time.
It just got the water washed out something I did yesterday.
It was it was perfect yesterday, but the water washed it out today.
How how are we gonna clean this up?
It it I thought it was done, but we need to we need to work on it again.
What if what if I did and it was something I'm building at my house.
What if I just abandoned the whole project and all I did is need to clean out a few holes that got got washed in.
And so now it's laid waste.
You know, we're in India and we saw all some abandoned buildings that they were half finished.
My wife said, why are there so many of those?
I said, I don't know.
But if they ran into something and they're just abandoned and like what if there was like one little tool to or helping someone with a few little things and they crossed over the bridge and that that building project that that I need to get done gets done and we did it.
So I mean, I think and it was perfect yesterday.
But this morning when I woke up, you know, it was all washed in.
So, you know, I need help.
And what if I can help somebody through something that was perfect yesterday and it needs help today so they can continue walking in their life?
This is a friend.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
Really it is.
And and also I love I love what you said that God you didn't say it in these words, but God expresses himself Mhmm.
Through us.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
He uses us in our friendships to express himself.
是的。
Yeah.
But what does that mean?
It's it's to you, it might mean that he you need gentleness.
Right?
And to someone else, they might need, something a little more specific, a little more firm.
To someone else, it might be, like, this is a weakness, and it's something that you that we fall into.
And if we don't get encouragement or exhortation, that we're gonna just live in it.
Right?
And and to remind somebody that, listen, what Christ has done in your life is so much better.
It's so much more than what that situation is.
And and not be afraid to face his mercies are brand new every morning.
There's a reason that's written in the Bible.
Right?
His mercies are brand new every single morning.
And when we look at Lamentations and we see that again and again and again, his mercies are brand new every day.
I need to be reminded that every day.
Now on the other hand, Colossians three ten says I'm complete in him.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
But his mercies are brand new every day.
Well, if I'm complete, why do I need his mercies?
Because I I fail.
对。
Yeah.
I fail.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
And it's by the grace of God that you or I are not the the friend who's hurting.
Mhmm.
So if we can walk in in God's righteousness, his upper righteousness, which really what is what we're doing
是的。
Yes.
This identity that we have is because he put it on us, not because we earned it.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
But we love it.
We love the fact that God sees us as holy and righteous, and we say, wow.
This is amazing that he looks beyond my faults and he sees my needs.
So therefore, I'm gonna operate in that uniform that he's placed me in, and I'm gonna encourage somebody in the same love.
Right?
But it's the same love personally.
And it means that Yeah.
Hey, the hole that you dug out to for this project washed back in again, dig another well.
是的。
Yeah.
Right?
Let's dig another well.
You haven't lost anything with God.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
He doesn't go, oh, you were gonna be a really good soldier for me.
But because it took you five times to get where you need to go, you're not a good soldier for me.
是的。
Yeah.
He looks at it all as it's brand new.
Every single day, his mercy is brand new for us.
Right?
And our our walk and our relationship has everything to do with what he's done in our lives and not our track record in
没错。
it.
对。
Right.
But can you imagine when I'm built up in that instead of no.
Like, we need to identify what somebody's going through so that we can help them.
是的。
Yes.
But once we have identified it, we're not living in that.
对。
Right.
Right?
How we got here is not the issue.
对。
Yeah.
You know, it's like, oh, I have a headache.
I have a headache.
Well That's great.
Maybe it's because you didn't drink enough water.
Maybe.
Maybe it's because you, you know, you're in the sun too long.
Maybe.
Maybe it's because you, you know, didn't eat soon enough.
Okay.
Maybe.
But really the issue is how can I get rid of the headache?
对。
Yeah.
Not necessarily living in the identity of why I have the headache in the first place.
对。
Yeah.
But can I actually get relief from that?
Yes, you can.
And here's how it comes.
Let's be occupied with that and not stuck in our history.
没错。
Right.
没错。
Right.
That's I mean, you living in the righteousness of God, counseling your friend is so rich.
And it gives a purpose to the counselor and it gives a freshness to the consolee.
You know what I mean?
It really does.
And this idea of, I know it's in James, but James chapter five, but it's like you expect when you go to someone and you're asking for like deliverance, you're actually expecting it.
You're not And this isn't is like, this isn't putting anything on the hurting person, but I I do wanna take them to a place of victory.
And you you're reminding them of that.
We are gonna get the building project done.
We are gonna undo the and you know what?
You're going to get to the other side.
This place where you're living over here is not going to be the identity of the rest of your life.
And like you said, you live in your identity in Jesus Christ.
You see your victory and you're seeing, you're calling the things that are not as though they are in that person's life and you see that bridge built and you're you're you're you're speaking words of faith, words of faith in a hurting person.
是的。
Yes.
In a hurting person's life and you're telling them who they are.
Because we're not even Brad said, I'm not gonna put words in his mouth, but just something that it's like, he can say no to a person.
You could say that wants to stay on the other side and say, oh, I guess you really, you you don't want an answer maybe.
You know, you can say that, but you as a if as a friend, you're telling them there is a victory that you can actually have.
是的。
Yes.
好的。
Okay.
Beautiful.
Beautiful.
I love that.
And, when we speak to somebody, you said this, this is interesting.
When we speak to somebody and we say you're a victor, but our expectation is that they're not, they're a failure and they're gonna fail again.
对。
Yes.
And it's just a matter of time.
But I need to tell them something positive to try to help him get out of it.
That's not gonna be effective.
Right?
It's not genuine.
It's not genuine.
It's not seeing the truth.
And really, the truth of the matter is we are only not living in that failure because God gave us the grace not to live in that failure.
Amen.
Not because we are not capable of living in that failure.
对。
Yes.
So when we see somebody in their need and we say, okay, For whatever reason, this is where they ended up.
And we address it in that nature.
Whatever reason, this is where you ended up.
We still have need for God's deliverance.
Let's get God's deliverance.
And how do we do that?
Well, we fortify ourselves with what his thoughts are towards us instead of what our experience was.
I was thinking about Isaiah forty one ten.
It says, don't be afraid for I am with you.
Don't be discouraged for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
This is the key that God wants to uphold us with his victorious right hand.
Right?
So our friendship says, okay, look, you're going through it.
I'm gonna listen.
I'm gonna be here for you.
I wanna oh, man.
I'm so sorry.
I'm listening.
I'm discerning.
I'm, you know, I'm caring.
I'm mourning with.
And then I'm encouraging.
对。
Yeah.
And I'm saying, hey.
That's not who you are.
对。
Yeah.
That's remember who you are?
You're a victor.
We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus who strengthens us.
对。
Yeah.
We are his mercies are brand new for us.
We are complete in him.
We are translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of his dear son.
These are the things that are true.
Let's let's live in those things.
And then our temptation is to slide back down, and then we say, wait a minute.
Are we are we sliding back down into the old identity?
That's not who we are.
Who's that?
Who are you talking about right now?
That's not you.
对。
Right.
Right?
Now along the way, we are encouraging ourselves with those same words.
是的。
Yes.
Right?
This isn't something that we're looking at our friend and saying, I'm holy up here, and you're not.
So I'm gonna get you out of it.
对。
Yeah.
It's like, no.
We are we are one.
对。
Yeah.
And we have this need from God to walk in the light as he is in the light, and then we have fellowship with him.
对。
Yeah.
And when we get out of that, what do we do?
We get back in the light.
是的。
Yes.
Right?
And this is this is, this is a beautiful thing.
And and people who are in that despair maybe in their friend in their lives that need a friend, they don't wanna call somebody and say, well, you should just listen to the message because I got delivered.
You know?
Like, yeah.
It may be true.
A 100%.
But God loved us into that situation and allowed it to happen.
是的。
Yes.
So how about if we sit with them and we say, something that really strengthened me or helped me when I was going through this similar situation.
God spoke to me in a really awesome way.
I love this.
I learned it from him.
Maybe it's helpful to you.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
That's yeah.
That's, Are we done now?
Oh, looking?
好的。
Okay.
不。
No.
好的。
Okay.
Just Just a way of helping people.
And like you were saying, like, I try to refrain from cliches.
你知道
You know
what I mean?
Because it you know, maybe ministry cliches because it it represents certain lines maybe in somebody's life if they're in the ministry.
You know, like when you say like a new creation, I wanna explain it in a way we're learning from Brad even just the way he breaks it in and get the tinker toys out.
You know what I mean?
We got those little scribble pads and all of that, but you wanna explain it in a way and break it down to the the minute aspects of it, you know.
And it's like, so if I'm gonna say a cliche, I I stop.
And I I think of myself, what is it?
And I go back to the foundation and I wanna explain it to them without ever saying the cliche.
And as you're saying, it helps me understand what I believe.
Cliches are they they get the definition of them is distorted.
The Satan loves to use cliches and and hurt people with them actually.
And this is a a communication.
The words that we use are are very important in people's lives.
And, you know, relating to them where where they are at.
You wanna like, that's how you're listening to a hurting friend and because and you you wanna like build the the bricks in the bridge together with them across across, you know, put the beams, have the crane come in, bring in the steel the day after the foundation on both sides is made and you wanna lay that in there and see, you know, now you can walk across there and let's go across together.
I mean, that's kind of how you're imagining helping this person get across something.
And So we're friends to somebody that's hurting, right?
Let me ask you a question, okay?
Like, tell me about listening to a person.
You have to have time.
You have to have care and you have to have like time even afterwards.
Tell me about listening to someone say, tell me about the listening to somebody that's hurting.
Like how do you do that?
I mean, it's, that's a beautiful question because it's something that lacks a lot in our counseling or our friendships.
And when we say counseling, we're just talking about encouragement one to another in kind of a personal setting.
And, you know, maybe we're not it's our in our friendships we're talking about today.
So we're talking about anybody who's out there and has a friend.
And, you know, listening.
What does listening mean?
Listening means that I'm willing to to hear what someone else is saying without putting something on them that I'm I'm trying to put across.
Right?
It's the first step.
Really, actually, Brad has an excerpt from his book, Angry With God.
Right?
It says angry at God, and then it's scratched out.
It says with God.
And and this is finding a friend for that journey.
Right?
And and he talks about listening.
And this is really a key point.
We listen even when we don't know what to say.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
We we don't necessarily listen because, oh, I'm just waiting for them to get done so I can number one, I find personally in my conversations with people that are hurting that the more they talk about the situation, they're kind of correcting themselves as they go.
是的。
Yes.
对。
Right.
But a lot of times, they know.
And they just they're articulating it, and we're agreeing with them, and we're there loving them.
I've had conversations with somebody that's twenty minutes or half hour and I barely say anything.
They say, thank you.
This was so helpful.
They counseled them the hurting person counseled themselves just because someone listened to them.
是的。
Yes.
And they could actually they so there's a great category.
The hurting person actually has a listener and just for somebody to listen to him systematically because sometimes you think things differently than you say things.
对。
Yes.
然后
And
when you can say things, you do it and you know someone's listening, your mind just goes in many different directions if you're thinking.
But if you say them, you actually can actually you start to list them in a in some type of order and you can deliver yourself.
对。
Yes.
And he even goes a step further in this listening process.
And he says, you know, he says the middle ground between being all empathy and avoiding hard situations is that you want with humility and courage to say, I'm not really sure that I fully understand, but I, and I know it's really hard, but, and I understand why you feel stuck.
Let's talk about it.
Right?
So he's he's he's not saying, I have the answer to you.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
But he's listening.
And he's willing to learn about he this is next episode.
He's willing to learn about your experience before speaking to them.
Like we we could assume that we understand where a person's coming from because we got a piece of their conversation and we might be misaligning the whole situation.
对。
Yeah.
But I'm willing to say, you know, I'm slow to speak and I'm, quick to hear.
Right?
Like, I I wanna hear.
I wanna hear what somebody's saying.
And also, how many times have you been in a situation where somebody says something to you, but you're going, I know what they really mean.
是的。
Yes.
They're saying it because they're trying to protect their their pain or they're trying trying not to make themselves look, too soft or weak in this situation.
对。
Yeah.
But you know what they're really saying.
Right?
And this is part of the discernment that god gives us in people's lives is to listen and and listen and not only just listen but to hear.
That's the next step.
I listened to him, but then I also heard them.
对。
Yeah.
And what they really need may not be what they're saying they need.
But what they really need can help get rid of the symptom that's showing up in what they say they need.
对。
Yeah.
Yeah, that's great.
And now, so I'm listening.
I'm listening to them.
What are my building blocks of like love and grace?
Like Paul said, I'm chief of sinners, but he also said, I am what I am by the grace of God.
He was a murderer.
He was a murderer.
You know what I mean?
And I think of that.
I've been thinking about that, like, and, you know, and Peter would deny Christ and he was, you know what I mean?
And God used him, you know?
And I think Brad's book or something I just read about what if the girl that accused Peter of knowing Christ saw Peter at Pentecost preaching the gospel.
Do you know I mean?
This would be like the girl was like reject him.
Do you know what I mean?
But how do we give?
I mean, and Peter had a spiritual ministry.
How do we give those as a friend, those building blocks to someone that is hurting?
I mean, I think part of it is rehearsal.
Right?
We're just rehearsing.
This is part of exhortation.
This is like we are we are strengthening somebody in their possession of redemption.
Right?
What's true to me is true to the person I'm talking to.
是的。
Yes.
God loves me unequivocally.
Right?
He's not sorrow sorrowful that he loves me.
对。
Yeah.
His love didn't change because of my my failure.
My failure is what's expected of me.
I'm made from the dust.
He's not shocked.
Right?
His his pain, his hurt, whatever it is, does not cause me to be rejected from the plan of God.
So I have to be secure about those things from my own life.
Right?
And then as I'm walking alongside somebody, I'm just strengthening them in their their possession of redemption.
I'm putting my arm around them and saying, we are more than conquerors by the grace of God.
And the building blocks are we're not gonna allow in our sentimentality someone to slip back in and say, it's okay.
You're just weak.
We're gonna say, no.
It it is a weakness, but we're not gonna live in that weakness.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
I have we've all had situations in our relationships where somebody has strengthened us in an area.
You Maybe I'm insecure about something.
I shared a message and I was insecure because I didn't get a point across that I wanted to make.
It sounded like I and my spouse says, would you stop being insecure and just thank God that he communicated what it was supposed to be communicated?
And and you go forward.
And you say, wow.
Thank you for that exhortation.
Right?
对。
Yes.
I know that she's telling the truth because she loves me.
是的。
Yes.
And I also know that I can be my worst enemy in my own insecurity, any of us.
Right?
As men, we are we are insecure.
当然。
Sure.
And, so the building blocks are just reminding us of, first of all, who we are in Christ.
You know?
That it is he that wants to strengthen us with his right hand.
哇。
Wow.
That it's his purpose.
Right?
It's his mercy that we're not consumed.
是的。
Yes.
It's his mercy that's brand new every single day.
And also that we can be sharpened.
You know, Proverbs seventeen seventeen and seventeen twenty seven.
You got the iron sharpening iron principle.
That iron sharpening iron principle is not that I'm sharpening you because I'm strong.
It's that look what God's done in my life, and it's offered to you as well.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
So there are building blocks.
And the person who is, like, walking in in as the counselor or the one who's walking as the consolee, they both have to understand the access that they have to the the throne of grace and how much God loves them and and is concerned for them and wants to build them up.
And when we fail, it's not the end of the story.
The just man falls seven times in a day, and he gets back up again.
Because each and every time he realizes it's the grace of God, and I'm growing and I'm moving forward.
And okay, somebody's hurting, we meet them where they're at.
对。
Yeah.
You know?
We we love them unconditionally.
We encourage them in their trial.
We mourn with them.
We challenge them.
Each step is carrying them another step with God.
It's let's not be occupied with the with the challenge.
Let's be occupied with Christ who is the deliverer from the challenge.
对。
Yeah.
Victory.
And how about this also that in my counsel in life, I'm not interested in counseling people onto my ways.
Like, that, okay, we're friends and you have a weakness or a challenge or a trouble or a difficulty, and God uses me for some reason to edify you.
My my desire is that my counsel or my friendship would point you towards Christ where your relief comes from.
And not that it would be something that we even have to talk we might never talk about it again.
I can think of instances where I had really, really hard, crazy conversations with people in our church.
I went through this situation.
I mean, things that you would be shocked.
Right?
Because this is just the nature of counseling.
Then somebody says, I was in this situation.
I did this.
It was the most horrific thing.
We deal with it.
We move forward.
We we encourage.
We get grace.
We see ourselves in the cross.
The next thing you know, I don't even have that fellowship.
I don't even remember.
Honestly, like you have those those things that God has done in our past that he's dealt with.
He never brings them up again.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
So so the hurting person, ultimately, their desire is that they would not be hurting.
是的。
Yes.
And how do we get rid of that poison?
Well, you gotta you gotta help them see that that poison is not the end game.
You know?
对。
Yeah.
What the end game is is refreshment and relief that comes through Christ and that they can get there.
Great.
I I get one testimony if I can give it.
I I just understood this yesterday.
I I mean, I I this is something I a testimony someone told me.
And it was it was the most incredible testimony about kind of what we're talking about, but it's the reverse of that where a friend had to forgive somebody that had done something really bad to them.
And this person, this person that was receiving this this action against against them had many years of not being able to forgive that person.
But that friend lived in trying to get forgiveness from God for that person.
And if it's a very stable person in the Lord.
And she stayed there as a friend.
She didn't push that friend away and say, I can't forgive you.
She fought for years, years and years to get forgiveness from God.
God let that buffet her so that as so and to to find God's mind so she could remain a friend to that person.
It was a dear friend to her.
Something happened to her, and then she had to wait on the grace of God to give her forgiveness for that person.
And I was just thinking, you know, like this is also something that we can do as a friend.
You know, like you could be, you know, maybe you've you've been jealous of someone and you have to wait years to lose your jealousy of a friend and you're doing that with God.
You know I mean?
Forgiveness years and it's like, you're fine.
You're you're fine.
But there's this thorn in your flesh that you're just waiting on for a friend.
You're jealous of a friend.
You have to forgive a friend.
You know I mean?
Something's happened and and you wait on God to receive God's grace to have that completely cleared up.
So, I mean, this is also how we can be friend, you know, I mean, it doesn't necessarily that in one sense that person that she needed to forgive needed needed that, you know, from her, but we're giving something to a friend that they actually need.
You know I mean?
And we're waiting on it.
And I love to think about something's not perfect, but this this person was, you know, learning how to forgive was perfect.
But she wasn't she didn't have perfect forgiveness, but she and she didn't have it, you know, a year later or two years later.
She waited for years from God to get to battle, for God to work her soul to get that in her life.
So now somebody that's hurting, this is how God builds the bridges, and he calls those things that are not as though they are.
对。
Mhmm.
You're hurting, but God does actually see you on the other side with, you know, the identity of pastor Barry Quirk.
He sees you on that side complete in Christ.
And this is this is something to to think about as we as we give our hurts to other people.
Like, you know, even before you give it, I I don't know how you can give it, but even think about that, like God does see you on the other side.
We're going to get to that other side.
对。
Mhmm.
好的。
Okay.
是的。
Yeah.
I I really it's a good point that the first of all, our minds, you know, are so we fall so short of how God sees situations.
Right?
He's looking at the master plan and we're stuck in the little breakout diagram on how to fix this little spot.
And he's like, this is just one little detail in the big picture.
对。
Yeah.
And I my ways are not your ways.
My ways are so much higher than your ways.
Right?
That God's God has a plan to deal with every aspect of it.
And it's all imperfect people involved in this.
Right?
So even the friend who's loving the other friend who needs help Yeah.
He's imperfect.
Right?
So even the way he sees the progress of the person, it's if you don't give that to God, you're gonna be disappointed.
哇。
Wow.
Because it's not gonna happen in your time maybe.
是的。
Yeah.
Or maybe it's gonna happen quicker than what you think it should.
And you're gonna judge that person should be more repentant or that person should be less free or whatever it is.
But how about we give it to God?
Right?
We let God be God and every man a liar.
And I think the the the beautiful thing about these kinds of relationships is that God uses imperfect people.
We were talking a little before the show and I said, that saying that hurt people hurt people.
And I said, one variant of that is that people bleed on people who didn't necessarily cause that blood to happen in the first place.
是的。
Yes.
And I have to be willing to say, okay, it's gonna happen in my friendship.
This person who's hurt is hurt at a situation, not me, but I might catch some of that that blood.
对。
Yeah.
And am I able to see myself as a person who's gonna get their strength from God and not by that person who's hurting hurting me by the not even realizing how badly they're hurting me?
And can I give them grace in that situation?
是的。
Yes.
Because it's the same grace that I need in this situation.
是的。
Yes.
And then the other part of that is that that God heals, and God is the one who will heal, and God is the only one that can heal.
I can't heal the situation, But I can encourage somebody to come to the one who can and to lay down by the waters that he provides for us, you know, in the green pastures by still waters in his rich mercy and in his great grace.
So we're learning today.
Right?
We're learning, and and we're part of the the body of Christ.
And the body of Christ is, it has many, many members.
And we have times when we are the ones that are building up, and we have times where we are ones that need the building up.
是的。
Yes.
And in either way, ultimately, it is God's position to to restore us, and it's ours to receive that.
So Yeah.
I hope this has been helpful to you.
If you're in the Baltimore area and you can make it tonight at 06:00, there's another session.
对。
Yep.
Friendship.
On friendship with Brad and Hambrick.
And then tomorrow morning at 10:00 Yeah.
Also right here in the chapel, instead of our normal staff meeting, we're gonna have a a meeting, another meeting.
And, you know, it's been a great time.
Thank you for joining us today.
