Speaker 0

耶!

Speaker 0

And I'm thrilled about what we're going to be discussing.

Speaker 0

This is a beautiful, beautiful topic this week, especially in light of the week that all of us have had, Just being reminded that abiding in God is so essential for our personal walks and for us as a body.

Speaker 0

But before we dive in, I know you have a really special announcement Oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

About this week.

Speaker 1

This is so exciting.

Speaker 1

This is the first time that Grace Hour is going to follow the women's seminar theme.

Speaker 1

And our seminar is this Friday and Saturday.

Speaker 1

Friday at 6PM is beautiful worship in the chapel with Jemima and Suzanne.

Speaker 1

So, everyone's going to love that.

Speaker 1

But I just have to put in a little glitch.

Speaker 1

You're going to have to show your registration.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

So come with your phone.

Speaker 1

There's no cut off for the seminar.

Speaker 1

The missionary tea, we had limited space, but the seminar is wide open.

Speaker 1

But we don't take cash at the door either, which is really funny.

Speaker 1

You've got to register online.

Speaker 1

Teens are half price.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

And everybody on Saturday will be getting this incredible book that we've put together.

Speaker 1

Beautiful.

Speaker 1

You don't need a notebook for the seminar because we've got pages in the back.

Speaker 1

We'll have a pen for you and everything.

Speaker 1

And it's 35 devotionals from Abbey Abraham that you will get to take home.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

And so it's gonna be great.

Speaker 1

There are five workshops.

Speaker 1

There's a teen workshop.

Speaker 1

所以,需要在 ggwo.org/events 上注册。

So, need to register online at ggwo.org/events.

Speaker 0

This sounds beautiful.

Speaker 0

我会

I will be

Speaker 1

there.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be great.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna be there.

Speaker 0

That's wonderful.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

It'll be a wonderful time for all of us to just come together.

Speaker 0

And, I always love when there's something powerful that we can attend on the dawn of a different season, you know, where we're at spiritually is different at the beginning of a summer versus the beginning of a fall and a winter.

Speaker 0

And I just love I love that we have resources that we can reach into and we have teachers that want us to hide these things in our hearts.

Speaker 0

So thank you so much, Michelle.

Speaker 1

And there'll be plenty of time for girls to chat with each other.

Speaker 1

Oh, good.

Speaker 1

Don't think it's a big long church service from Friday night until Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So go online and register.

Speaker 1

And of course, the whole theme of Abide comes from John fifteen:five, where Jesus says, I am the vine, you are the branches, abide in me, I in you, As a branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abides in the vine no more can you except you abide in me.

Speaker 1

So, I've been thinking about that theme and I thought about this ship.

Speaker 1

It's called the Wow.

Speaker 1

Gonna give you my picture.

Speaker 1

If you want to learn about this ship, it's the only ship in the world and it's like a great big wooden spoon.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I can Oh, I can kind of see it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

What happens?

Speaker 0

Teachers, we just went to teacher mode.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

It's a research vessel.

Speaker 1

Beautiful.

Speaker 1

And it flips 90 degrees into the water.

Speaker 1

Can you imagine?

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

It was built sixty years ago.

Speaker 1

It's still floating around and they fill it with a dozen scientists.

Speaker 1

It gets towed out.

Speaker 1

It has no engine.

Speaker 1

It gets towed out to where they want and then it flips into the water and goes down.

Speaker 1

It's more like a buoy.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

And it's takes thirty minutes for it to flip and 300 feet of it.

Speaker 1

I know this is so ridiculously technical, are submerged and this part is just 50 feet.

Speaker 1

All right.

Speaker 1

And then they run all this sensitive acoustic and they collect all this oceanographic, O she in o graphic, however you say that, without the engines vibrating.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Alright?

Speaker 1

And some things flip like the refrigerator.

Speaker 1

They'll show you the refrigerator slowly flipping sideways.

Speaker 1

Some you have to go in later and rotate.

Speaker 0

So it's like a slow moment by moment shift.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

And then some things like the bathroom, they couldn't flip or shift.

Speaker 1

So there's two toilets.

Speaker 1

Oh my.

Speaker 1

Two sinks, a vertical and a horizontal.

Speaker 0

Oh, it sounds kind of fun.

Speaker 1

It's crazy.

Speaker 1

So why am I talking about this?

Speaker 1

Well, it wouldn't it be nice if when we need to get quiet and rest and abide, it would just take us thirty minutes to flip

Speaker 0

Oh, man.

Speaker 1

Into that incredible spirit of rest and abiding.

Speaker 1

I don't know about you, but it sometimes takes me a lot more than thirty minutes.

Speaker 0

You know, when you were first describing it, I said, wow.

Speaker 0

A whole thirty minutes.

Speaker 0

And then when you just shifted, I said, only thirty minutes?

Speaker 0

So it's amazing how much yes.

Speaker 0

It's so true because there's there's so much in us.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

There's so much in us that is alive and yelling and we're trying to self calm and we're also trying to simultaneously deliver on what we're supposed to be doing at the same time.

Speaker 0

So that's not a quick process

Speaker 1

对。

No.

Speaker 0

Even though we would like for it to be more comfortable in that way.

Speaker 0

But it doesn't mean it's impossible for us to be in God's presence or pursue God or begin process of reconnecting with him.

Speaker 1

Well, we love Matthew I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

Matthew 11.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna switch.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna change.

Speaker 0

Like the ship.

Speaker 1

Like the ship.

Speaker 1

I'm shifting like the ship.

Speaker 1

Well, we are all bombarded

Speaker 1

With advertising and people's opinions.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And the celebrity culture or the political culture or the food culture.

Speaker 1

I mean, you can just jump on Facebook and find your little group.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Of course with me it's Pokemon Go, but don't tell anyone that I play Pokemon Go at this age.

Speaker 1

So how are we gonna shift and get in the vine?

Speaker 1

And we didn't want this seminar to be us yelling at everyone.

Speaker 1

Hey, are you abiding?

Speaker 1

I think you should I don't think you're abiding.

Speaker 0

Abide right now.

Speaker 1

Hey, everybody.

Speaker 1

We're gonna give you 10 countdown.

Speaker 1

So we went to Matthew 11, Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.

Speaker 1

But listen to it in The Message version.

Speaker 1

Eugene Peterson lived right up the street from me in Abiding in.

Speaker 1

He lived in Bel Air.

Speaker 1

He says, are you tired, worn out, burned out on religion?

Speaker 1

Come to me.

Speaker 1

Get away with me.

Speaker 1

You'll recover your life.

Speaker 1

I'll show you how to take a real rest.

Speaker 1

Walk with me, work with me, watch how I do it.

Speaker 1

Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.

Speaker 1

I won't lay anything heavy or ill fitting on you.

Speaker 1

Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

Speaker 1

And we just took that.

Speaker 1

The Women's Council just took that and we've been running with that.

Speaker 1

And all this week, we are exploring those verses, taking those apart.

Speaker 1

Today it's about the body.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

So come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden.

Speaker 1

And we know that work is a curse, but it's also a blessing because God worked for the six days of creation.

Speaker 1

He was up every morning doing stuff.

Speaker 1

The angels had their phones, and they were videoing everything.

Speaker 0

I don't really know if this is how it was going, but I I see what you

Speaker 1

对。

mean.

Speaker 1

You can see.

Speaker 1

You know, if if your boss is doing a big thing, you wanna catch it.

Speaker 0

Yes, absolutely.

Speaker 1

So they're the only ones that got to see those first five days and, it had purpose to it.

Speaker 1

It created this incredible world that we're standing on.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

The air that we're breathing, the water that comes out of our faucets effortlessly.

Speaker 1

And God took man and put him in the garden and gave him a job.

Speaker 1

Because we all know men need something to do.

Speaker 1

All right?

Speaker 1

And that's not a bad thing.

Speaker 1

对。

No.

Speaker 1

That's It's a God ordained thing.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Know, but then after the fall, work is a curse.

Speaker 1

Just try keeping your kitchen sink clean.

Speaker 1

Every night I clean it before I go to bed.

Speaker 1

Every morning something has gone on there.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

Someone had a chocolate ice cream and left the bowl.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

家人。

Family.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

Not throwing shade on you.

Speaker 1

I love you all.

Speaker 1

I don't mind putting your ice cream dish in the in the dishwasher.

Speaker 1

But, know, it's over and over.

Speaker 1

I've got laundry.

Speaker 1

I've got a huge basket sitting in my laundry room.

Speaker 1

How about you?

Speaker 0

I have a bunch of comforters right now.

Speaker 0

I just slid them in the corner before I left.

Speaker 0

I said, I'll deal with you later Yep.

Speaker 0

Because it will take time.

Speaker 1

It's never ending.

Speaker 1

There we never come to a day where like, we're done with laundry for the rest of our lives.

Speaker 0

I wish.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

But you know what?

Speaker 0

I I love what you are alluding to, Michelle, which is the fact that, yes, we have this amazing opportunity to come to God and he is not worried.

Speaker 0

He is not full of anxiety, and he can see what's going to happen, what has happened.

Speaker 0

He is completely at peace.

Speaker 0

But I do want to counter what you're saying a little bit with that little voice inside of all of us, which is our inner monologue.

Speaker 0

Because we have all of these advertisements, as you said, and we have a lot of worldly influence, and that's always on top of whatever is feeling very self defeated inside of us.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

And we carry that around.

Speaker 0

Even if we allow God to shed his scripture on that each day.

Speaker 0

It is an active battle.

Speaker 0

And I really think about how, in his book, Max Lucado, this is a wonderful book.

Speaker 0

This is a combination, but this is specifically from his book, In the Eye of the Storm.

Speaker 0

He talks about how once we have this inspired, excited view of what our life is going to be after we give it to him, there is a shift that happens when we realize the same God that loves me is actually also going to allow pain in my life.

Speaker 0

And sometimes we never rebuild the trust after that.

Speaker 0

So he says in the book, there's a window in your heart through which you can see God.

Speaker 0

And once upon a time, that window was clear.

Speaker 0

You knew that God had a will, and you continually discovered what it was.

Speaker 0

Then suddenly, the window cracked.

Speaker 0

A pebble broke the window, a pebble of pain.

Speaker 0

And this is what happens with us.

Speaker 0

We say, okay, God, I'm gonna come.

Speaker 0

That's easy.

Speaker 0

I can come to you.

Speaker 0

You're so welcoming.

Speaker 0

I've given my life to you.

Speaker 0

You died on the cross for me.

Speaker 0

Here I am.

Speaker 0

I'm so available.

Speaker 0

But coming to God is not equivalent to now saying, since I have come and I'm in this new place in my life, I am completely absolved from any conflict.

Speaker 0

I will never feel sad again.

Speaker 0

I will never go through a problem that breaks my heart.

Speaker 0

And I think sometimes we don't realize that we have a lot of inner conflict against God because of unmet expectations.

Speaker 1

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

And we don't realize it.

Speaker 0

Maybe sometimes we even feel bad about it.

Speaker 0

But it has an impact when we want to recover our life, when we want to abide.

Speaker 0

There's this blockade there saying, wait a minute, God.

Speaker 0

I I wanna trust you.

Speaker 0

A part of me trusts you, but there's a part of me that's also kind of standoffish because I know that now as I've grown, part of abiding in you is bringing that pain to you and asking you questions about it, is bringing that burden to you and saying, what is the purpose behind this?

Speaker 0

This really hurts.

Speaker 0

And we can stay away from God because we are trying to wrestle with the fact that now we are truly learning that just like any great father, he is going to let us learn through these painful lessons sometimes as well.

Speaker 0

And that doesn't mean he's not trustworthy, but it it stings, and it makes it makes us say, maybe I'll try to go abide in another way.

Speaker 0

是的。

Sure.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Sure.

Speaker 1

Well, that word labor means not just good labor like, oh, you know, hey, I got the dishes done.

Speaker 1

I think I'll go sit on the couch.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

It's your heavy, exhausted, weary.

Speaker 1

And you feel fatigue.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Like you're never gonna recover from this.

Speaker 1

And heavily laden refers to this idea you're burdened maybe with your own self, the things you've put on yourself Yes.

Speaker 1

Or other people's expectations.

Speaker 1

And of course, the Jews are thinking of the Mosaic Law.

Speaker 1

How am I gonna keep the law?

Speaker 1

How am I going to be perfect?

Speaker 1

You know, tradition.

Speaker 1

Know, the Sabbath, keep the Sabbath.

Speaker 1

My goodness, don't even flick a mosquito off your arm because I think that's work.

Speaker 1

You know, and what are we laboring for in our Christian life?

Speaker 1

We can slip into works.

Speaker 1

Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 1

We know this is greater grace, world outreach.

Speaker 1

But, you know, we slip into works, know, I find myself saying, okay, good girl.

Speaker 1

Oh, well, you should do this.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

停。

Stop.

Speaker 1

放松。

Relax.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Are we striving?

Speaker 1

You know, are we toiling?

Speaker 1

Do we know that what we're doing is what God wants us to do?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And I try to make myself listen to myself about what I'm complaining.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So we've got these bodies.

Speaker 1

How do we get this body to abide?

Speaker 1

And how we think affects our body.

Speaker 1

In Matthew 11, where he says, come on to me.

Speaker 1

Hey.

Speaker 1

He's saying, come on.

Speaker 1

We've got a detour here.

Speaker 1

Let's change the direction you're going.

Speaker 1

You know, stop producing wood, hay and stubble.

Speaker 1

But what is wood, hay and stubble?

Speaker 1

It's all the things we do instead of coming unto God.

Speaker 1

You know, we build our little, you know, three little pigs built three different kinds of houses.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And I think it's guilt, fear, and shame.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Those emotions can come on us.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But then how do we deal with that?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

I think a lot of times we can stay there.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

And, you know, we were actually talking about this at the recent Women's Labor Day retreat, which thank you so much again, Boiling Springs.

Speaker 0

We had a beautiful time.

Speaker 0

But Adrian Bryson spoke on the subject, do you want to be healed?

Speaker 0

And it really struck all of us because there were so many wounded women at this retreat.

Speaker 0

I mean, we all carry something.

Speaker 1

All of us do.

Speaker 1

Every single one us.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

In every congregation in

Speaker 0

the world.

Speaker 0

As soon as you have come out of the womb, it's a matter of time,

Speaker 1

you know?

Speaker 0

But I love that question and we've all been meditating on it throughout the entire week because sometimes we really can build an identity around the wound.

Speaker 0

Sometimes we feel a sense of loyalty and sometimes we can equate it with this is the thorn in my flesh that keeps me close to God.

Speaker 0

But there is a difference between saying, I remember this because it scarred me and I have learned from it.

Speaker 0

However, it's not meant to be what I set up camp around.

Speaker 0

This is not the end all be all for me now.

Speaker 0

This isn't where my walk ends.

Speaker 0

And that can be very difficult when we have a lot to work through, as you said.

Speaker 0

But I love what you referenced about how we think about it.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Because our mind as our control center, it is what helps us make decisions.

Speaker 0

It's what helps us take the first step, or it's what holds us back.

Speaker 0

And I was telling you, I was reading another book by Elizabeth George called Loving God With All Our Mind.

Speaker 0

And my goodness, the way she breaks down your actual thinking patterns and how there's so much in you that prevents a fullness of God from really being what you can abide in.

Speaker 0

It's not that he's not available.

Speaker 0

It's that your thinking is working against yourself and against the situation because your mind is meditating on so many things outside of him.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

And then you're trying to gain your strength and gain your life from there.

Speaker 0

So she actually says in a portion of the book, a healthy thought life, a thought life that is pleasing to God comes out of a close relationship with him.

Speaker 0

Like a virus, our thoughts have the ability to drain our energy and cripple our usefulness.

Speaker 0

Our thoughts can, however, be a source of strength when we dwell on the powerful truths of scripture and let God work through those truths to change our way of thinking.

Speaker 1

That's so good.

Speaker 1

So let's chat about fear for a minute.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Every think of the worst thing you hate in the world that makes you fearful.

Speaker 1

For me, it's a certain long skinny reptile and I saw one on my deck the other day and just lost my mind.

Speaker 1

Never in twenty six years have I seen this reptile on my deck.

Speaker 1

My deck is 20 feet in the air, it seems like to me.

Speaker 1

I would be safe.

Speaker 1

But my heart rate started.

Speaker 1

You know, I could hardly breathe.

Speaker 1

My muscles got tense.

Speaker 1

My stomach dropped.

Speaker 1

But when we crossed the line from, oh, okay, wow.

Speaker 1

And we walk ourselves back.

Speaker 1

You know, how am I going to deal with this?

Speaker 1

Or do I raise my deck even 40 feet higher?

Speaker 1

Do I start making decisions based on fear?

Speaker 1

And the first thing we do is we overestimate danger.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Proverbs 22, a guy says in verse 13, there's a lion outdoors.

Speaker 1

I will be slain by this lion.

Speaker 1

Well, many there could be one day a lion outdoors.

Speaker 1

But how many times does that happen?

Speaker 1

Yes, there was a reptile on my deck.

Speaker 1

But for twenty six years, there hasn't been.

Speaker 1

So I'm not gonna stop going on my deck Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Because of this thing.

Speaker 1

But we center if we're focused on fear

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

We center our life on avoiding things Yes.

Speaker 1

Rather than what we value.

Speaker 0

And you could have very easily, Michelle, said, well, now that this reptile has made its way into my life, I am going to now imagine everything horrible that could have happened.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And now I'm going to let the fear in this situation completely rule how I even think about this deck.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

How I even approach it.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna forget all about this 26.

Speaker 0

It doesn't even exist anymore because this is the year that the reptile was in front of me, and now that's all that matters.

Speaker 0

And that's what we do.

Speaker 0

Out of our fear, we say, oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

Like, because I hate how this feels so much, I have to go into protect myself mode.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

But what you reach into actually is your flesh rather than reaching for God.

Speaker 0

Because which which one is easier?

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Letting God really touch that place where you're so broken, that's hard.

Speaker 0

You know, going back sometimes to those memories that you have to acknowledge, those things that you've carried with you.

Speaker 0

Maybe nobody else knows about it, but you carry it every day.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

And you you actually feel like you can hide from God.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

You know, you'll pray about everyone else and everything else, but you're not gonna pray about that.

Speaker 0

That is untouchable territory.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

But God is the God who wants to be the one who not just holds you in that area, but speaks to you.

Speaker 0

And I think sometimes we can put this pressure or this expectation on ourselves when God says come.

Speaker 0

We say, wait a minute, God, there's too much that I have to figure out.

Speaker 0

There's too much that I have to resolve.

Speaker 0

I need my faith to be in a stronger place so that I'm impressing you as I come.

Speaker 0

You know, I'm not supposed to have unbelief towards you and so I can't approach you at your feet like this because now I'm displeasing to you.

Speaker 0

I mean, we have completely talked ourselves out of why God welcomes us.

Speaker 0

But this is also what Elizabeth George warns us about in the book, which I really love.

Speaker 0

She says inaccurate and unbiblical thoughts about God can block his power in our life.

Speaker 0

We must guard against allowing our thoughts or feelings to override the great truths of scripture.

Speaker 0

So even if I'm afraid, what does God say?

Speaker 0

Even if I don't know about this, what does God say?

Speaker 0

Even if I'm very, very scared to become undone in this area, what does God say?

Speaker 0

And am I gonna lift that higher?

Speaker 0

I'm not gonna lift the deck higher.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna lift God's truth higher no matter how I feel about it because he cannot lie and what he says is actually my identity and my life.

Speaker 1

So we've given an example of we have a legitimate fear.

Speaker 1

At one point in our life.

Speaker 1

It gave a body a physical reaction to us, but then we turn from abiding and we start making decisions.

Speaker 1

You know, building walls.

Speaker 1

Guilt can do the same thing.

Speaker 1

When you're first pregnant, you think, oh, this is going to be so amazing.

Speaker 1

And then a few years later, you yell at that perfectly wonderful child.

Speaker 1

And then you have guilt.

Speaker 0

然后

And

Speaker 1

then you're like, okay, I'm never gonna do that again.

Speaker 1

Whatever this child wants, I'm gonna give it, give it, give it.

Speaker 1

And you end up creating a very little self centered human being.

Speaker 1

Because you had guilt from maybe a one time thing.

Speaker 1

You know, I dropped my first child.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

You did too.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

谢

Thank

Speaker 0

谢。

you.

Speaker 0

I did too.

Speaker 0

The chain is broken.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

I did too.

Speaker 0

Now, they're both fine.

Speaker 0

Mine was very very small, but of course, I panicked like it was from like Yes.

Speaker 0

A window.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

But that's we we remember.

Speaker 0

My gosh.

Speaker 0

As soon as you said it.

Speaker 1

My my son is 48 years old.

Speaker 1

Uh-oh.

Speaker 1

And I still feel the guilt.

Speaker 1

I was holding him.

Speaker 1

I fell asleep.

Speaker 1

I did too.

Speaker 1

He slipped out my arms.

Speaker 0

Did a little roll.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

A little roll because you're just so exhausted and you just are like, oh my gosh, what just happened?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

But you know what?

Speaker 0

Like even though we remember it, this is such a wonderful illustration, Michelle, because we remember it because we remember how devastated we were.

Speaker 0

And of course, we thought about what just happened and what could have happened.

Speaker 0

But you know what?

Speaker 0

I love that even though it's probably a joke between you and your son now, I know it is between me and

Speaker 1

my know.

Speaker 1

Don't think we've talked

Speaker 0

about it.

Speaker 0

Oh, no.

Speaker 0

Oh, no.

Speaker 0

Well, it didn't influence everything about how you raised him.

Speaker 0

You did not spend the rest of your life apologizing to him, you know, through candy, ice cream, lack of discipline.

Speaker 1

Maybe I did.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

I'm not talking about that one day.

Speaker 0

I'm talking about throughout his life.

Speaker 0

He knows that you love him, and he also knows that part of loving as a human being is loving brokenly.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

That's just part of it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

You know, God's perfect love works through us, and that's where the perfection comes from.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And as we see that we're becoming more like him, that's where we can say, okay, I have made progress not because of what I've done, but because indeed I have come.

Speaker 0

I have sat at his feet and I have opened up his word and I have considered it.

Speaker 0

His truth is going to be above the truth that I speak to myself in that guilt and shame.

Speaker 1

Amen.

Speaker 1

You know, shame, oh, this painful feeling that you are flawed and unworthy of love.

Speaker 1

That you are unworthy of belonging, unworthy of connection, you know, and it has it could happen.

Speaker 1

You something happens, you do something.

Speaker 1

And, but God never wanted us to experience shame.

Speaker 1

Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden of Eden, you know, and then their eyes were opened.

Speaker 1

And shame separated them from God.

Speaker 1

So, we need to know that yes, our bodies have a physical response to fear, guilt and shame, but aligning our thoughts with God.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And we can replace those toxic cycles.

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

You know, when it comes up, when the memory comes up, we don't need to play it, sit down and watch the movie.

Speaker 0

And we do that.

Speaker 0

We do that.

Speaker 0

Like this is I love this because this is one way that we we have to remember.

Speaker 0

I tell my my kids all the time, you know, you have a lot of different traits about you and they're all wonderful traits.

Speaker 0

But if you don't know how to properly use the traits, then they become a problem.

Speaker 0

So my son is amazing, absolutely amazing at memorization and he went to a school that helped him with that for a period of time.

Speaker 0

It's wonderful that he can memorize scripture, memorize songs, memorize dates.

Speaker 0

Sometimes in our homeschool when I say, Now, where did I put that book?

Speaker 0

You actually put it right under the red mug.

Speaker 0

I'm right there in the corner of I the saw you last Wednesday.

Speaker 0

You know, it's beautiful.

Speaker 0

But how much can this work against him when he does feel a sense of guilt and shame and he begins replaying how he did it wrong, how he was yelled at or reprimanded and what he regrets, you know?

Speaker 0

So, have to submit our qualities in our heart to God because when we self consult and self manage, it does turn into a huge mess.

Speaker 0

He has to be our point of reference.

Speaker 1

He does.

Speaker 1

And we can see that our body also can affect how we think.

Speaker 1

You know, so we've seen how our mind can affect our body.

Speaker 1

Let's go to the other side.

Speaker 1

And I think in first Kings 19, we've got Elijah.

Speaker 1

And it's eight fifty BC.

Speaker 1

So, it's quite a while ago.

Speaker 1

King Ahab is ruling the Northern Kingdom Of Judah.

Speaker 1

He's married quite the girl, Jezebel.

Speaker 1

I don't know anyone who's named their daughter Jezebel.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 0

I don't know if that's a bad thing.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

But they've they've abandoned God.

Speaker 1

And they've got Baal and Ashtoreth that they're worshiping.

Speaker 1

And God sends Elijah.

Speaker 1

I love that God cares.

Speaker 1

And I think there's this one incredible day of his life.

Speaker 1

He sets up this contest.

Speaker 1

You know, it's called the barbecue contest.

Speaker 1

They've got the meat already prepared.

Speaker 1

They've got the wood.

Speaker 1

They've got the grill already.

Speaker 1

But they're not gonna flick the switch.

Speaker 1

They're gonna wait and see if God will flick the switch.

Speaker 1

So we've got 450 of these false prophets trying to light their barbecue.

Speaker 1

It doesn't happen.

Speaker 1

It's like half the day.

Speaker 1

And then Elijah prays.

Speaker 1

He actually dumps water on the barbecue.

Speaker 1

Can you imagine doing that?

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

And God still lights the flame.

Speaker 1

God's amazing.

Speaker 1

And in the same day, Elijah supervises the killing of all those bad guys, which is like, I could have done without that video.

Speaker 1

And then there's been no rain for three years.

Speaker 1

It's the same day.

Speaker 1

He prays and prays and prays.

Speaker 1

It takes quite a while and rain starts falling.

Speaker 1

Hasn't fallen in three years.

Speaker 1

So, King Ahab has been there.

Speaker 1

He's been a spectator.

Speaker 1

He's in a chariot, which means horses.

Speaker 1

And he starts going down the mountain and Elijah outruns him.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

It's a 20 mile run.

Speaker 0

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

It's all this one incredible, ridiculous day.

Speaker 1

And obviously, Elijah's lost his mind.

Speaker 1

Or is he so completely empowered by God?

Speaker 1

You know, some commentators say he shouldn't have done that running.

Speaker 1

That really done him in.

Speaker 1

But you know what?

Speaker 1

We can't touch what's God doing in someone else's life.

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

But can you imagine?

Speaker 1

He has got to be physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually spent from this incredible day.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And he decides the best thing to do is just keep running.

Speaker 1

He gets a threat from Jezebel same day.

Speaker 1

She says, I'm gonna kill you.

Speaker 1

So he runs to the desert.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

And there he just says, wow, I think God you should just kill me.

Speaker 1

So that physical, mental, emotional exhaustion It's very real.

Speaker 1

Can lead our our mind into a place Yes.

Speaker 1

Where, you know, all we think is something negative.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And despair is a very real thing for Christians, you know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

We have moments, sometimes seasons, you know?

Speaker 0

Sometimes, I heard somebody say it was just like an entire chunk of my life or an entire decade of my life that I just feel like I lost because I was just in a rut.

Speaker 0

I was in a mental rut.

Speaker 0

And this happens and we carry a lot of shame about it as we are carrying it and also when we are coming out of it.

Speaker 0

And I just think that's so important for us to understand, like for the Christian, when we have a relationship with God, the healthiest way that we can take care of our mental health is to continue to be reminded that abiding is essential for our well-being.

Speaker 0

Beautiful.

Speaker 0

It is not just a pretty thing that we say.

Speaker 0

It is not just the definition of a real Christian.

Speaker 0

This is how we are able to not just survive our lives, but still have this abundance in our heart when everything else about us is pulling us down.

Speaker 0

And it's the only power that can go into that dark hole and pull us up.

Speaker 0

And I just want to reference again another thing that Adrian Bryson said is, you know, God can handle it.

Speaker 0

He can handle the questions.

Speaker 0

He can handle the problem.

Speaker 0

He can handle the circumstances.

Speaker 0

But actually, that's not really the issue.

Speaker 0

The issue is what's going on between your heart and whether or not it is turning in the direction of God or if it's avoiding the direction of God.

Speaker 0

And this is the essence of a lot of things that we battle in our life every day.

Speaker 0

We have a separation, and we justify it.

Speaker 0

I don't need God for this.

Speaker 0

I'm fine without God for that.

Speaker 0

I did my prayer time.

Speaker 0

I'm good.

Speaker 0

I'm good.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

But that's not what a relationship, an ongoing relationship with anyone is like if you're close to them.

Speaker 0

You continuously pursue them.

Speaker 0

You want to hear from them.

Speaker 0

You want to share things with them and not just the heavy things.

Speaker 0

Let that little joy that you had that day, oh my gosh, do not despise the day of small beginnings.

Speaker 0

I got up today.

Speaker 0

Maybe for the last couple of weeks, I have not been able to get up out of my bed.

Speaker 0

I have just been so, so, so sad.

Speaker 0

I've been so encompassed in whatever has challenged me, whatever has broken me.

Speaker 0

And today, I got up.

Speaker 0

Today, I opened the curtains.

Speaker 0

Today, I stepped outside.

Speaker 0

Today, I remembered who God is and that I'm worth something to him.

Speaker 0

Amen.

Speaker 0

And it can truly restore you when you think about verses like Romans five eight that that tells us that we're valuable individuals even when we might not feel like we are.

Speaker 0

We were valuable enough to die for.

Speaker 0

And that truth never changes no matter how we change or how we feel.

Speaker 0

And that's why it's such a stability for us to hold on to and say, I'm gonna live as though this verse is real even when I don't feel like it is.

Speaker 1

That is so beautiful.

Speaker 1

You know, and it can happen to anyone.

Speaker 1

Here, Elijah has been has spent three years trusting God.

Speaker 1

So let's say you have been in the ministry, you've been or you've been saved for decades and decades and decades.

Speaker 1

That's not gonna carry you through to tomorrow.

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Here he's got this incredible victory.

Speaker 1

You know, the barbecue, God lit it and God was amazing.

Speaker 1

Oh, it's you can have these mountaintop experiences.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

That's not gonna carry you

Speaker 0

through.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

All his enemies, the bad prophets, and they're spreading bad doctrine and lies about God.

Speaker 1

So we see things in the world today where people are doing evil things and if you stay off Facebook, just you could pray.

Speaker 1

Or if you jump in and read I can't handle the news.

Speaker 1

I don't know about you.

Speaker 0

I have a hard time as much stuff.

Speaker 1

Because my heart just breaks.

Speaker 0

而且我

And I

Speaker 1

can't fix it.

Speaker 1

But I can pray.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

He sees all these enemies, all this bad doctrine wiped out.

Speaker 1

And then he prays and rain comes.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And we're thinking rain, what's the big deal?

Speaker 1

You don't understand in a desert area, rain is the most precious commodity.

Speaker 1

You don't want your saddlebag filled with gold.

Speaker 1

You want to make sure that hanging off of your camel is a big bag of water.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

You know, because gold is not gonna do you any good.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

It's the water.

Speaker 1

You know, and so that's the important thing and water comes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So you can have a ministry where you are feeding and refreshing people.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But that your ministry is not going to be your identity.

Speaker 1

It can't be your identity.

Speaker 1

You know, and then physically, he outruns horses.

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 1

I don't think even on a motorcycle I could.

Speaker 1

I don't know if I could outrun horses.

Speaker 1

And it's definitely Elijah.

Speaker 1

We're talking about the first guy.

Speaker 1

And it's incredible.

Speaker 1

Then he gets an email from Jezebel that just devastates him.

Speaker 1

So I mean, you're like, wait a minute.

Speaker 1

Hey, dude.

Speaker 1

You have this incredible relationship with God.

Speaker 1

You've been trusting God for decades.

Speaker 1

You've seen miracles.

Speaker 1

You've been on the mountain top.

Speaker 1

You've gotten answer to prayer.

Speaker 1

You've ministered to people.

Speaker 1

And here he is under a Juniper tree begging God to just kill him.

Speaker 0

But you know what?

Speaker 0

It speaks so much to our humanity, Michelle.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And I love what you said about experiences because we cannot live off of experiences.

Speaker 0

And I know a lot of times people encourage you sometimes they'll say, know, you got to live moment by moment.

Speaker 0

How about we live scripture by scripture or promise by promise?

Speaker 1

That's beautiful.

Speaker 0

Because the moment is not going to help us endure.

Speaker 0

It's not.

Speaker 1

Not tomorrow.

Speaker 0

That doesn't mean we can't be joyful.

Speaker 0

That doesn't mean we can't be grateful.

Speaker 0

I'm not trying to demean the blessings that we receive.

Speaker 0

But if I am still trying to bring the grace from last year into my new bit of circumstances, my relationship changes, the fact that I've changed, it's not gonna carry me because that was the grace sufficient for that time, and he has greater grace for now.

Speaker 0

And he wants me to reach for that, you know?

Speaker 0

And I love that picture of us, looking at Elijah and saying like, man, so so you really can say, you really can experience God in a way of saying, you know what?

Speaker 0

I don't really have anything left.

Speaker 0

I don't have anything left.

Speaker 0

And you can say that because this is not about your spiritual resume.

Speaker 0

And finally, I truly believe that finally, when we say that, when we get to the point God is saying, now we can have an honest fellowship.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Because you're letting go of this armor you think you're supposed to be wearing every time you put your hands together and come to me.

Speaker 0

I want your heart.

Speaker 0

I don't care about all these other ways that you wanna distract me or impress me.

Speaker 0

I want the essence of what's in your heart.

Speaker 0

And the only way that we commune is if you give me your time and you let me see it.

Speaker 0

Let me see what you don't want anyone else to see and worship.

Speaker 0

Just worship.

Speaker 0

Maybe you will not get that exact scripture, and now I know exactly what to do.

Speaker 0

I mean, I don't know who that happens to every day.

Speaker 0

I'm certainly not that person.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

But I really I'm learning more and more.

Speaker 0

The solution is just to worship God for who he is.

Speaker 0

That's the solution.

Speaker 0

That is the entire solution.

Speaker 0

Okay, God.

Speaker 0

Let me be reminded of you personally.

Speaker 0

And then because that is entering my mind, I can begin to let go of the other things that are really, really gripping me.

Speaker 1

Amen.

Speaker 1

I I love that God sends an angel.

Speaker 1

No rebuke.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

He does not take Elijah's life.

Speaker 1

God just rejects that.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

And there's angel food cake.

Speaker 1

Baking.

Speaker 1

It's like, oh, thank you.

Speaker 1

And a cruise of water.

Speaker 1

Alright?

Speaker 1

So, nourishment and water.

Speaker 1

And he falls asleep.

Speaker 1

And then it happens again.

Speaker 1

And I love the angel says, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And it's just incredible that God wants to care for our physical bodies.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Some people think that being burned out.

Speaker 1

You know, and you're exhausted all the time and you don't take a Sabbath, you don't take care of your body.

Speaker 1

You don't say no.

Speaker 1

You say yes to every opportunity and you're a wreck physically is is spiritual.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

No, it's not.

Speaker 1

God may call you.

Speaker 1

Look at the day Elijah has just had.

Speaker 1

It's beyond belief.

Speaker 1

I don't think any one of those things would have been easy.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

But then God ministers to him.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

I love that practical view because I don't know if you do this, Michelle, but, I have a calendar that really helps me to manage not just what I have to be at, but where I have to create space.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And so sometimes the way that I'll create it because I can't follow everyone's calendar and even though I would love to participate in more, I have a responsibility to myself, my family, and even to protect my relationship with God.

Speaker 1

Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 0

By saying I cannot be this level of busyness to the point where it's just about doing and there is absolutely no margin for breath and life.

Speaker 0

And so I will look at things and I will say, okay, if you know that you're gonna have a week like this, you are going to make sure that the beginning days of the week after have nothing or only things that are redeeming internally.

Speaker 0

And I have to do that.

Speaker 0

And I think that's a protection God wants us to have because it's not about doing and doing and doing, but there is a lot to get done.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

I mean, that's just the nature of life.

Speaker 0

没错。

Sure.

Speaker 0

But God always values rest.

Speaker 0

He rested himself.

Speaker 0

And so when we look at the example of Christ, we can't let our feelings or let our own expectations override.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Jesus showed us an example.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

I'm working.

Speaker 0

I'm paying attention to people.

Speaker 0

Ministry is my life.

Speaker 0

But rest is in there as well because when I'm in this human body, it does have a limit and that's how it was designed.

Speaker 0

We are designed to age, designed to get tired and be restored.

Speaker 0

And God doesn't want us to separate our humanity from our relationship with him just because there is this huge spiritual aspect.

Speaker 1

And I love that even though he's a wreck, Elijah, he's under that Juniper tree Mhmm.

Speaker 1

God has more things for him.

Speaker 1

God says, you know, I've I've given you this angel food cake.

Speaker 1

And we've got you've got some place to go.

Speaker 1

They have a personal meeting on a mountain.

Speaker 1

And God says, Bud, you're not alone.

Speaker 1

I have 7,000 people.

Speaker 1

So, we are I think I take that.

Speaker 1

I need the body of Christ.

Speaker 1

当然。

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And we are connected to the incredible body of Christ, not just through greater grace, but all believers.

Speaker 1

But greater grace is pretty nice because I'm connected there.

Speaker 1

These are my people.

Speaker 1

But we've got to give our bodies that rest, that nourishment.

Speaker 1

And we're not gonna dictate what you should do.

Speaker 1

Go go Google that.

Speaker 1

Go figure it out.

Speaker 1

You know, say about it.

Speaker 1

Say about it.

Speaker 1

Set reasonable boundaries,

Speaker 0

you know.

Speaker 1

Love your family and and make sure that they come first sometimes.

Speaker 1

Know?

Speaker 1

Like Sunday morning, we're not staying home from church Right.

Speaker 1

To love you up.

Speaker 1

Let's go to church and then afterwards, I can give you special attention.

Speaker 1

You know, we set in our schedule beautiful times.

Speaker 1

But then he also said, you gotta go anoint a buddy to be with you.

Speaker 1

You know, we can't even though in the body of Christ, we have this incredible time, mountain time with God, And we've got the body.

Speaker 1

We need people who are one on one with us in the race.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And so, alright, back to my flip ship.

Speaker 1

Oh, let see.

Speaker 1
