Episode 184: Spelling Says a Lot (Part 1)

本集简介

Over the course of the 1500s, English spelling started to become standardized, but the pronunciation of the language continued to change. By the early 1600s, English scholars noticed that spellings no longer reflected the way words were pronounced, and they recommended phonetic reforms. In this episode, we examine how English spelling reformers described the pronunciation of English in the early 1600s, and we also explore how Modern English spellings reflect the phonetic history of words. Speaker 0

欢迎收听《英语历史》播客,这是一档关于英语语言历史的节目。

Welcome to the History of English podcast, a podcast about the history of the English language.

Speaker 0

这是第184集。

This is episode one eighty four.

Speaker 0

拼写透露了很多信息。

Spelling says a lot.

Speaker 0

这一次,我们将关注17世纪初英语开始走向世界时的发音情况。

This time, we're going to look at the pronunciation of English in the early sixteen hundreds as the language was starting to make its way around the world.

Speaker 0

我们将通过研究单词的拼写方式来实现这一点。

And we're going to do that by focusing on the way words are spelled.

Speaker 0

尽管英语拼写常常显得荒谬,但如果你了解单词过去是如何发音的,通常就能找到其中的规律和逻辑。

As crazy as English spelling often seems, there's usually an explanation and logic to it if you understand how words were pronounced in the past.

Speaker 0

所以这一次,我们不仅要试图理解英语拼写的规律,还要还原近代早期英语的发音。

So this time, we're going to try to make sense out of English spelling while also recreating the sound of English in the early modern period.

Speaker 0

但在开始之前,让我提醒大家,本播客的网站是historyofenglishpodcast.com,您可以在patreon.com/historyofenglish上订阅支持我们,并获取独家附加集。

But before we begin, let me remind you that the website for the podcast is historyofenglishpodcast.com, and you can sign up to support the podcast and get bonus episodes at patreon.com/historyofenglish.

Speaker 0

在开始之前,让我解释一下本集的核心理念。

Now before we get started, let me explain the idea behind this episode.

Speaker 0

在整个播客系列中,我一直在追踪字母表的发展,以及它如何在几个世纪以来被应用于各种语音。

Throughout this podcast series, I've tried to trace the development of the alphabet and the way it's been applied to various sounds over the centuries.

Speaker 0

我也试图追踪英语和其他语言发音的基本变化。

I've also tried to trace basic changes in the way English and other languages are pronounced.

Speaker 0

当然,这两者的发展密切相关,因为理论上,单词的拼写本应反映其发音方式。

And, of course, those two developments are closely related to each other because theoretically, the way words are spelled is supposed to reflect the way they are pronounced.

Speaker 0

在现代英语中,情况并不总是如此,但拼写和发音是我们故事中的基本组成部分。

That isn't always the case in modern English, but spelling and pronunciation are fundamental parts of our story.

Speaker 0

问题是,在追踪发音和拼写的发展时,这些主题分散在十三年、183集的内容中。

The problem is that in tracing those developments in pronunciation and spelling, the topics have been spread out over thirteen years and a 183 episodes.

Speaker 0

我怀疑你们大多数人并没有听过所有这些集数。

I doubt most of you have listened to all of those episodes.

Speaker 0

即使你们都听过了,可能也还记得所有这些细节。

And if you have, you probably remember all of those details.

Speaker 0

所以我想到,做一集或几集来快速总结我们迄今为止涉及现代拼写的所有关键点,会很有帮助。

So I thought it would be helpful to do an episode or a couple of episodes that provide a quick summary of all of the essential points that we've covered as it relates to modern spelling.

Speaker 0

我也觉得,如果结合17世纪初的背景来讲解会更有帮助,因为那时英语正开始向世界各地传播。

And I also thought it would be helpful to do that in the context of the early sixteen hundreds because that was the time when English was starting to spread around the world.

Speaker 0

英语故事的剩余部分,大部分将涉及地区口音和方言的发展。

Most of the remaining part of the story of English will concern the development of regional accents and dialects.

Speaker 0

因此,我认为有必要确立一个语言发音的基准,以便未来的发展可以追溯到这个拥有更共同基础的时期。

So I thought it would be helpful to establish a baseline in the way the language was pronounced so that future developments can be traced back to this point when there was more of a common foundation.

Speaker 0

所以,我们的目标是提供一个关于17世纪初语言主要特征的便捷总结。

So the idea is to have a convenient summary of the essential features of the language in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

我还决定通过拼写来探讨这个话题,因为拼写是现代英语中诸多挫败和困惑的根源。

I also decided to approach this topic through spelling because spelling is the source of so much frustration and confusion in modern English.

Speaker 0

但这主要是因为我们的拼写系统停滞在了过去。

But that's mainly because our spelling system is stuck in the past.

Speaker 0

我们大多数单词的拼写方式,都沿袭了16世纪的发音。

Most of our words are spelled the way they were pronounced in the fifteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

因此,仔细观察更早的发音可以揭示为什么单词今天的拼写方式是这样的。

So a closer look at older pronunciations reveals why words are spelled the way they are today.

Speaker 0

现在是探索这些主题的好时机,因为我们在十七世纪初有几位重要的学者,为我们详细记录了当时英语的发音情况。

And this is a good time to explore those topics because we have several important scholars in the early sixteen hundreds who provided us with a detailed account of English pronunciation at the time.

Speaker 0

所以这一集将涵盖一些新内容,同时也会总结之前几集中的一些重要话题。

So this episode will cover some new ground, but it will also summarize some of the important topics from earlier episodes.

Speaker 0

如果这些内容让你觉得有点熟悉,那就是这个原因。

If some of this material seems vaguely familiar, that's why.

Speaker 0

这将是讨论的第一部分。

And this will be the first part of the discussion.

Speaker 0

这次我会讲解字母表的前半部分,其余部分留到下一集。

I'll cover the first part of the alphabet this time, and I'll save the rest for the next episode.

Speaker 0

那么,让我们从上一次讲到的1619年继续讲述英语的故事。

So with that, let's pick up the story of English where we left off last time in the year 1619.

Speaker 0

到这个时候,英国已经在爱尔兰、北美的詹姆斯敦以及百慕大建立了殖民地。

By this point, we have English settlements in Ireland, in Jamestown in North America, and in Bermuda.

Speaker 0

我们还在印度设有贸易站,英国商人也开始在日本开展业务。

We also have trading posts in India, and English traders were starting to operate in Japan.

Speaker 0

因此,英语正在走向全球。

So English was on its way around the world.

Speaker 0

英语正开始成为一种国际语言,但从某种意义上说,它早已是国际语言了。

English was starting to become an international language, but in a sense, it already was an international language.

Speaker 0

在过去的五个世纪里,英语词汇因法语、拉丁语、希腊语、古诺尔斯语,以及越来越多的荷兰语、西班牙语和意大利语而急剧膨胀。

Over the prior five centuries, the English vocabulary had exploded with words from French, Latin, Greek, Old Norse, and increasingly from Dutch, Spanish, and Italian.

Speaker 0

我们甚至看到来自印度的词汇也开始流入英语。

We've even seen that words from India were starting to flow into the language.

Speaker 0

因此,英语使用者乐于接纳来自任何地方的词汇。

So English speakers were willing to embrace words from anywhere.

Speaker 0

除了少数批评外来影响的学者外,大多数人似乎都认为,外来影响使英语变得更富有表现力、更灵活、更具有世界性。

And outside of a few scholars who decried the outside influence, most people seem to think that the outside influence had improved the English language by making it more expressive, more flexible, and more worldly.

Speaker 0

在之前的节目中,我提到过,作家们开始首次对英语语言感到自豪,至少是自诺曼征服以来的第一次。

In prior episodes, I mentioned how writers were starting to express pride in the English language for the first time, at least the first time since the Norman conquest.

Speaker 0

这种自豪感的另一个例子来自一位名叫威廉·卡姆登的英国作家和历史学家,他在我们故事当前的时间点——1619年时已年过六旬。

Another example of that pride came from an English writer and historian named William Camden, who was in his late sixties at the current point in our overall story in 1619.

Speaker 0

他是一位作家,也是一位藏书爱好者。

He was a writer and a bit of a book collector.

Speaker 0

他四年后去世时,将他的藏书留给了罗伯特·科顿,而科顿的图书馆正是今天许多古英语和早期中古英语文献的来源。

When he died four years later, he left his books to Robert Cotton, whose library was the source of so many Old English and early Middle English books that survive today.

Speaker 0

早在几年前的16世纪末,卡姆登就撰写了一部关于不列颠群岛的调查著作《不列颠尼亚》,这部作品对研究伊丽莎白时代晚期的历史学家而言至关重要。

Well, a few years earlier in the late fifteen hundreds, Camden had composed a survey of the British Isles called Britannia, and it's an important work for historians of the late Elizabethan period.

Speaker 0

这本书探讨了不列颠群岛的历史、地理和文化。

The book discussed the history, the topography, and the culture of the British Isles.

Speaker 0

卡姆登甚至学习了古英语和威尔士语,以便从古手稿中收集关键信息。

Camden even learned old English and Welsh so he could compile essential information from old manuscripts.

Speaker 0

他的书是用拉丁文写成的,但几年后,在17世纪初,部分内容被翻译成英文出版。

His book was written in Latin, but several years later in the early sixteen hundreds, excerpts were published in English.

Speaker 0

这些译文之所以引人注目,是因为它们揭示了当时英语状态的某些重要特征。

And they're interesting because they reveal something very important about the state of English at the time.

Speaker 0

这些段落揭示了英语使用者对自己语言的自豪与自信。

The passages reveal the pride and confidence that English speakers had acquired in their own language.

Speaker 0

英语曾被视为一种平民语言,不如拉丁语和希腊语等古典语言,也不如法语——自诺曼征服以来,法语一直是英格兰权力与财富的语言。

English had once been perceived as a peasant language, inferior to classical languages like Latin and Greek, and also inferior to French, which was the language of power and wealth in England going back to the Norman conquest.

Speaker 0

但卡姆登揭示了这种观念已经发生了变化。

But Camden reveals how that perception had changed.

Speaker 0

他认为,这种语言已经发展到足以像其他任何语言一样表达思想、情感和细微的含义。

He felt that the language had evolved to the point where it could express ideas and emotions and shades of meaning as well as any of those other languages.

Speaker 0

在一段特别的文字中,卡姆登表达了他对英语的自豪,并批评了英格兰人对其他语言的痴迷。

In one particular passage, Camden expressed his pride in English and criticized the English obsession with other languages.

Speaker 0

他写道:‘请原谅我,若我因深爱而认为我们的英语与拉丁语一样流畅,与西班牙语一样礼貌,与法语一样优雅,与意大利语一样深情——正如一些崇尚意大利风格的人所承认的那样。’

He wrote, quote, pardon me and think me not overbalanced with affection if I think that our English tongue is as fluent as the Latin, as courteous as the Spanish, as court like as the French, and as amorous as the Italian as some Italianated amorous have confessed.

Speaker 0

没有任何事情比我们自己过度推崇、赞美和研究外语,更损害我们语言的尊严了。’

Neither hath anything detracted more from the dignity of our tongue than our own affection of foreign tongues by admiring, praising, and studying them above measure, end quote.

Speaker 0

尽管卡姆登和其他英语使用者已对自己的语言产生了自豪感,但语言的书写和拼写方式仍令人感到些许沮丧。

While Camden and other English speakers had gained a sense of pride in their own language, the way the language was written down and spelled was still a source of some frustration.

Speaker 0

传统上,没有标准的拼写方式。

Traditionally, there were no standard spellings.

Speaker 0

人们只是按照发音来拼写单词。

People just spelled words like they sounded.

Speaker 0

卡姆登还对英语的这一特点做了一个有趣的注释。

And Camden also included an interesting note about that aspect of English.

Speaker 0

他首先提到了一位名叫约翰·普赖斯爵士的威尔士作家,此人生活在约一个世纪前的16世纪初。

He began by making reference to the comments of a Welsh writer named sir John Price, who had lived a century earlier in the early 15 hundreds.

Speaker 0

普赖斯当时写过一段话,指出英语拼写的不规则性。

Price had written a passage at the time that noted how irregular English spelling was.

Speaker 0

而近一个世纪后写作的卡姆登,对普赖斯的评论提出了异议。

Well, Camden, writing nearly a century later, took exception to Price's remarks.

Speaker 0

他认为,到世纪末,英语拼写——有些人称之为正字法——已经变得更加规范和标准化。

He felt that English spelling, what some people call the orthography of the language, had become more regular and standardized by the end of the century.

Speaker 0

卡姆登写道:‘这种发音的多样性导致了拼写上的一些差异。’

Camden wrote, quote, this variety of pronunciation hath brought in some diversity of orthography.

Speaker 0

因此,约翰·普赖斯爵士为了贬低我们的语言、抬高威尔士语,声称他用英语说出的一句话,由四位优秀的秘书记录下来,结果他们各自写下的拼写在许多字母上都彼此不同。

And hereupon, sir John Price, to the derogation of our tongue and glory of his Welsh, reported that a sentence spoken by him in English and penned out of his mouth by four good secretaries was so set down by them that they all differed one from the other in many letters.

Speaker 0

而同样地,由多位威尔士人用他们的语言书写时,却连一个字母都没有差异。

Whereas so many Welsh writing the same likewise in their tongue varied not in one letter at all.

Speaker 0

好吧,我并不想贬低普赖斯的功劳,但确实有人观察到,当十位英国人书写同一句话时,他们之间唯一的差异也只是在某些词末尾多写或少写了一次那个不发音的 e,结尾引号。

Well, I will not derogate from the good night's credit, yet it hath been seen where 10 English writing the same sentence have also concurred that among them all there have been no other difference than the adding or omitting once or twice of our silent e at the end of some words, end quote.

Speaker 0

这是一段值得注意的记载,因为它揭示了十五世纪期间发生的一项重要发展。

Now that's a notable passage because it reveals an important development that had taken place over the course of the 15 hundreds.

Speaker 0

在那个世纪,英语拼写开始变得规范和标准化。

During that century, English spelling had started to become regular and standardized.

Speaker 0

当然,它还没有完全固定下来。

Of course, it wasn't completely fixed yet.

Speaker 0

正如卡姆登所指出的,人们仍然倾向于在许多词尾加上一个不发音的 e。

As Camden noted, people still had a tendency to add a silent e to many words.

Speaker 0

这是古英语词尾变化消失后遗留下来的影响。

That was a lingering effect of the loss of old English inflections.

Speaker 0

但在前一个世纪里,已经取得了大量进展。

But a lot of progress had been made over the course of the prior century.

Speaker 0

这一过程始于15世纪末,当时英国政府开始标准化拼写和政府文件。

It began when the English government started to standardize spellings and government documents in the late fourteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

随后,印刷术进一步推动了这一进程。

And then the printing press moved the process along even further.

Speaker 0

到了16世纪初,字典和拼写书籍开始出版,它们传达了一种观念:单词有正确的拼写方式。

And by the early sixteen hundreds, dictionaries and spelling books were starting to be published, and they conveyed the idea that there was a correct way to spell words.

Speaker 0

它们还提供了一个来源,人们可以从中查找正确的拼写。

And they provided a source that a person could turn to if they needed to find that correct spelling.

Speaker 0

但这一切都存在一个主要问题。

But there was one major problem with all of this.

Speaker 0

英语拼写在标准化的过程中,语言的发音却正在迅速变化和演变,这给我们留下了今天所面临的问题。

English spelling was still being standardized at a time when the pronunciation of the language was rapidly changing and evolving, and that left us with the problem we have today.

Speaker 0

英语拼写通常反映的是15世纪中期单词的发音。

English spelling generally reflects the way words were pronounced in the mid fifteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

到了十五世纪末,一些作家已经开始注意到拼写正逐渐与发音脱节。

By the late fifteen hundreds, some writers were already observing how spelling was starting to become divorced from pronunciation.

Speaker 0

正如我们在之前的节目中所见,几位英国作家在十五世纪后期试图通过推荐一种严格的语音拼写系统来解决这一问题。

As we saw in prior episodes, several English writers tried to address this problem in the latter part of the fifteen hundreds by recommending a strictly phonetic spelling system.

Speaker 0

他们希望单词的拼写能完全按照其发音来书写。

They wanted words to be spelled exactly like they were pronounced.

Speaker 0

他们中的大多数人甚至提出了自己的语音字母表。

Most of them even proposed their own phonetic alphabets.

Speaker 0

他们的想法是,每个音素都对应一个特定的字母。

The idea was that each sound would have its own letter.

Speaker 0

这正是我们现有字母表的主要问题。

That's the main problem with our existing alphabet.

Speaker 0

英语中的音素数量远多于字母数量,因此我们的字母常常需要承担双重或三重功能。

There are far more sounds in English than there are letters, so our letters often have to do double or triple duty.

Speaker 0

但这些早期的拼写改革者希望用特定的字母来表示每一个音素。

But these early spelling reformers wanted to represent each sound with a specific letter.

Speaker 0

当然,严格音标拼写法的问题在于,人们在不同地区甚至同一地区内的发音方式各不相同。

Of course, the problem with a strictly phonetic approach is that people pronounce words differently in different regions and sometimes within the same region.

Speaker 0

而且发音会随时间变化,因此很难让人们就音标拼写达成一致。

And pronunciations change over time, so it's hard to get people to agree on phonetic spellings.

Speaker 0

即使你能达成一致,这些拼写方式也必须随着语言的变化不断修订和更新。

And even if you can agree, those spellings have to be constantly revised and updated as the language changes.

Speaker 0

否则,一段时间后,这套系统就不再具有音标性了。

Otherwise, the system stops being phonetic after a while.

Speaker 0

音标拼写还需要你创造新字母来表示英语中的所有特定发音,而要说服人们采用新的拼写系统非常困难。

Phonetic spelling also requires you to invent new letters to represent all of the specific sounds in English, and convincing people to adopt a new spelling system is hard.

Speaker 0

一旦人们习惯了某种拼写方式,就会觉得它看起来才是对的。

Once people become accustomed to a particular spelling, it just looks right to them.

Speaker 0

他们不喜欢改变它。

They don't like to change it.

Speaker 0

因此,所有提出的音标书写系统都难以被印刷商和大众接受。

So none of the phonetic writing systems that were proposed stood a chance with printers and the general public.

Speaker 0

但这些提议对语言历史学家来说很重要,因为它们揭示了当时语言的发音方式。

But those proposals are important to language historians because they reveal a great deal about the way the language was pronounced at the time.

Speaker 0

由于这些提议大多包含音标字母,并且还包含了一些段落来说明字母的使用方法,因此它们对历史语言学家而言是宝贵的资料。

Since most of those proposals contained a phonetic alphabet and also contained passages to illustrate how the alphabet worked, they're a gold mine for historical linguists.

Speaker 0

它们为我们提供了关于16世纪末和17世纪初单词发音方式的最佳证据之一。

They provide some of the best evidence we have about the way words were pronounced in the late fifteen hundreds and early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

早期倡导音标拼写的人之一是约翰·哈特。

One of the early advocates of phonetic spelling was John Hart.

Speaker 0

他在16世纪下半叶写作,他的评论非常重要,因为他详细探讨了当时单词的发音方式。

He wrote in the second half of the 15, and his comments are important because he wrote extensively about the way words were pronounced at the time.

Speaker 0

我们在第159集和第160集中研究过他的著作。

We looked at his works in episode one fifty nine and one sixty.

Speaker 0

其他学者很快追随哈特的脚步,提出了类似的拼写系统。

Other scholars soon followed in Hart's footsteps and proposed similar spelling systems.

Speaker 0

但几年后,一位名叫理查德·穆尔卡斯特的英国校长提出了一套我们今天基本仍在使用的拼写系统。

But a few years later, an English headmaster named Richard Mulcaster proposed a system that we largely use today.

Speaker 0

穆卡斯特是伦敦圣保罗学校的校长,他认识到纯粹的语音拼写系统并不实用。

Mulcaster was the headmaster of Saint Paul's School in London, and he recognized that a purely phonetic spelling system wasn't practical.

Speaker 0

它不可能为每一种英语方言都设计不同的拼写方式。

It couldn't have different spellings for each dialect of English.

Speaker 0

你需要一种一致的方法,兼顾单词的发音方式和人们习惯的拼写方式。

You needed to have a consistent approach that took into account both the way words were pronounced and the way people were accustomed to spelling them.

Speaker 0

这种平衡的方法为我们今天所使用的模式提供了基础。

That balanced approach provided the model we use today.

Speaker 0

我们曾在第163期节目中探讨过穆卡斯特的想法和建议。

We looked at Mulcaster's ideas and proposals back in episode one sixty three.

Speaker 0

后来,穆卡斯特最终从圣保罗学校的校长职位上退休了。

Well, Mulcaster eventually retired as headmaster of Saint Paul's School.

Speaker 0

在1607年,一位名叫亚历山大·吉尔的新校长接替了他的位置。

And in sixteen o seven, he was succeeded by a new headmaster named Alexander Gill.

Speaker 0

吉尔同样对英语的发音和书写方式感兴趣。

And Gill was also interested in the way English was spoken and written.

Speaker 0

顺便提一下,吉尔在这一时期的学生中有一位名叫约翰·弥尔顿的人,他后来撰写了《失乐园》。

As an aside, one of Gill's students during this period was John Milton, who later went on to write Paradise Lost.

Speaker 0

在我们讲述英语历史的当前节点——1619年,吉尔出版了一本关于英语语音和拼写的重要的书,名为《Logonomia Anglica》。

Well, at the current point in our overall story of English in the year 1619, Gill published an important book on English phonetics and spelling called Logonomia Anglica.

Speaker 0

正如这个书名所示,这本书是用拉丁文写的,但这并不罕见。

As that name indicates, it was written in Latin, but that wasn't unusual.

Speaker 0

在16和17世纪,许多研究英语的学者都用拉丁文写作,因为拉丁文仍被视为学术语言。

A lot of scholars in the fifteen hundreds and sixteen hundreds who wrote about English did so in Latin because Latin was still considered to be the language of scholarship.

Speaker 0

但这并没有削弱吉尔对英语的整体看法。

But that didn't detract from Gill's overall view of English.

Speaker 0

就像我前面提到的威廉·卡姆登一样,吉尔对英语评价极高。

Like William Camden, I mentioned earlier, Gill had a very high opinion of English.

Speaker 0

他写道,没有任何一种语言比英语更优雅、更得体,更能表达每一个微妙的思想。

He wrote that no other language was more graceful, elegant, or apt for the expression of every subtle thought than English.

Speaker 0

和许多在他之前的英国学者一样,吉尔希望推行一种更贴近语音的拼写系统。

Like many English scholars who had preceded him, Gill wanted a more phonetic spelling system.

Speaker 0

而这本1619年出版的著作阐述了他的观点。

And this particular book published in 1619 set forth his ideas.

Speaker 0

当然,他的大部分观点并未被接受。

Of course, most of his ideas failed to gain acceptance.

Speaker 0

但和之前的约翰·哈特一样,他主要因对当时语言的详细描述而被铭记。

But like John Hart before him, he's largely remembered because of his detailed description of the language at the time.

Speaker 0

但吉尔并不是这个时期唯一一位详细描述语言的作家。

But Gill wasn't the only writer of this period to provide a detailed description of the language.

Speaker 0

就在吉尔撰写其英语拼写著作的同时,伦敦另一位作家罗伯特·罗宾逊出版了一本名为《发音艺术》的书。

Around the same time that Gill was composing his work on English spelling, another writer in London named Robert Robinson produced a book called the art of pronunciation.

Speaker 0

罗宾逊创造了自己的音标字母系统。

Robinson created his own phonetic alphabet.

Speaker 0

尽管关于他的记载寥寥无几,但他的著作也为当时发音提供了重要见解。

And even though relatively little is known about him, his book also provides some important insight about pronunciation at the time.

Speaker 0

这些作家的作品为我们提供了关于英语在那个时代的关键信息——当时英语正传播到遥远的土地,而这些地区也开始出现新的方言变体。

The works of these various writers provide essential information about English at a time when English was reaching distant lands and new varieties were beginning to emerge in those regions.

Speaker 0

因此,借助这些作家的著作以及现代语言学家收集的其他线索和证据,我将尝试呈现17世纪初英语的发音面貌。

So with the help of those writers and other clues and evidence compiled by modern linguists, I'm going to try to present a view of what English sounded like in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

我将通过分析单词的拼写方式来实现这一点,因为这两者密切相关。

And I'm going to do that by looking at the way words are spelled since those two factors are closely related.

Speaker 0

请注意,我说的是我将呈现一种关于当时英语发音的见解。

And notice that I said I'm going to present a view of how English was pronounced at the time.

Speaker 0

那些对17世纪发音了解远超我的人,也无法就细节达成一致,因此我绝不会声称自己能提供这一话题的唯一权威观点。

People who know far more about seventeenth century pronunciations than I will ever know can't agree on the details, So I would never claim to present the one definitive view of this topic.

Speaker 0

但尽管存在一些分歧,仍有许多被广泛接受的原则,我将在本集中重点探讨这些内容。

But despite the occasional disagreements, there are many generally accepted principles that I'll try to focus on in this episode.

Speaker 0

当然,17世纪初的英语口语存在大量差异,就像今天一样。

Of course, there would have been a lot of variation in the way English was spoken in the early sixteen hundreds, just as there is today.

Speaker 0

但我将重点关注伦敦及其周边地区所使用的语言形式,因为当时大多数作家关注的正是这种形式。

But I'm going to focus on the form of the language that was spoken in and around London, because that's what most of the writers of the period were concerned about.

Speaker 0

他们认为这是当时语言的标准形式,事实上,它演变成了今天世界上大部分地区所使用的标准英语。

They considered it to be the standard form of the language at the time, and in fact, it evolved into the standard form of English spoken in most parts of the world today.

Speaker 0

由于本集我的方法是探讨拼写与发音之间的联系,让我们从字母a开始说起。

Now since my approach in this episode is to examine the connection between spelling and pronunciation, let's begin at the beginning with letter a.

Speaker 0

关于字母a,首先要记住的是,它最初在拉丁语中代表‘ah’的发音,英语最初也是这样使用这个字母的。

The first thing to keep in mind about letter a is that it originally represented the ah sound in Latin, and that was the way the letter was originally used in English as well.

Speaker 0

事实上,当我们遇到字母a时,通常意味着过去某个时候它发的是‘ah’音。

In fact, when we encounter that letter a, it usually means there was an ah sound involved at some point in the past.

Speaker 0

在像‘father’这样的词中,这个字母仍然表示那个音,但它在现代英语中不再是字母a的主要发音。

The letter still represents that sound in a word like father, but it's not the primary sound of the letter in modern English.

Speaker 0

如今,字母a通常代表其他发音。

Today, the letter a usually represents other sounds.

Speaker 0

当你还是孩子学习拼写时,可能被教过字母a有两种不同的发音。

As a child learning to spell, you may have been taught that the letter a has two distinct sounds.

Speaker 0

一种是所谓的短a音,出现在‘hat’、‘back’、‘sad’和‘apple’这类词中,这就是a的发音。

There's the so called short a sound found in words like hat, back, sad, and apple, that's the a sound.

Speaker 0

另一种是所谓的长a音,出现在‘cake’、‘tape’、‘face’和‘name’这类词中。

And then there's also the so called long a sound found in words like cake, tape, face, and name.

Speaker 0

那就是a的发音。

That's the a sound.

Speaker 0

你可能还学过,拼写通过在单词末尾添加不发音的e来区分这两种发音。

And you also may have been taught that the spelling distinguishes those two sounds by adding a silent e to the end of a word if it has the long sound.

Speaker 0

这就是hat没有不发音的e,而hate有不发音的e的区别。

So that's the difference between hat without the silent e and hate with the silent e.

Speaker 0

这个不发音的e只是为了表明a应该如何发音。

That silent e is only there to indicate how the a is supposed to be pronounced.

Speaker 0

所有这些都对,但当然,它被极度简化了。

Now all of that is true, but, of course, it's incredibly simplified.

Speaker 0

字母a也可以用来表示其他发音,我们稍后会看到。

The letter a can also be used to represent other sounds as we'll see.

Speaker 0

但让我们保持简单,只关注短a和长a的发音。

But let's keep things simple and just focus on the sounds of short a and long a.

Speaker 0

这个短a音,a,自古英语以来就一直存在。

That short a sound, a, has been around since old English.

Speaker 0

事实上,我举的那些例子词,比如hat、back、sad和apple,在古英语中就已经存在了。

In fact, all of those words I used as examples like hat, back, sad, and apple were around in Old English.

Speaker 0

那时候,它们的发音几乎和我们今天发音的方式一样。

And back then, they would have been pronounced essentially the same way we pronounce them today.

Speaker 0

古英语甚至有一个专门表示这个音的字母,叫做ash。

Old English even had a specific letter for that sound, which was the letter called ash.

Speaker 0

它看起来像是a和e挤在一起。

It looked like an a and an e pushed together.

Speaker 0

这个字母的创造是因为a音与通常由字母a表示的音略有不同。

That letter was created because the a sound was a little different from the sound usually represented by letter a.

Speaker 0

因此,盎格鲁-撒克逊人显然觉得他们需要一个独立的字母来表示这个音,而这个音在拉丁语中并不常见。

So the Anglo Saxons apparently felt they needed a separate letter for that sound, which wasn't really common in Latin.

Speaker 0

但在诺曼征服之后,受过法语训练的抄写员们认为ash字母没有必要,于是它逐渐消失了。

But after the Norman conquest, the French trained scribes didn't see a need for the letter ash, so it gradually disappeared.

Speaker 0

在中古英语时期,它被字母a取代,这种拼写方式一直沿用至今。

During the Middle English period, it was replaced with letter a, and that spelling persists to this day.

Speaker 0

总的来说,这看起来相当直接。

Now, all in all, that seems pretty straightforward.

Speaker 0

但这里有一个复杂的因素。

But there's one complicating factor here.

Speaker 0

我说过,我们今天发音这些词的方式和古英语时期基本相同,但这并不意味着几个世纪以来发音没有变化。

I said that we pronounce those words the same way they were pronounced in old English, but that doesn't mean the pronunciation hasn't changed over the centuries.

Speaker 0

事实上,自诺曼征服以来,这些词中的元音在原始的ah音和附近的ah音之间来回波动。

In fact, since the time of the Norman conquest, the vowel sound in those words has fluctuated between the original ah sound and the nearby ah sound.

Speaker 0

当我所说的‘附近’,意思是当我们从ah音转向ah音时,舌头只是稍微降低和放平了一点。

And when I say nearby, I mean that the tongue is lowered and flattened just a little bit as we go from ah to ah.

Speaker 0

诺曼征服后不久,英语使用者似乎将这个元音降低为ah音,并持续了几个世纪。

Now shortly after the Norman conquest, it appears that English speakers dropped that vowel sound down to ah for a few centuries.

Speaker 0

因此,hat、back和sad变成了hot、back和sad。

So hat, back, and sad became hot, back, and sad.

Speaker 0

但在16世纪末,这个音又回到了ah音,从而恢复了原始发音,形成了今天我们听到的hat、back和sad等词的常见发音。

But then in the late 15 hundreds, the sound moved back to ah again, thereby returning to the original pronunciation and giving us the common pronunciation that we hear today in words like hat, back, and sad.

Speaker 0

在十七世纪初,这个音仍在回归其原始发音。

That sound was still returning to its original sound in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

因此,在我们讲述英语整体演变的这个阶段,你可能会听到两种发音:年长且受过良好教育的人说 hot、bach 和 sod,而年轻且教育程度较低的人则说 hat、back 和 sad。

So at the current point in our overall story of English, you would have probably heard both pronunciations with the older and more educated speakers saying hot, bach, and sod, and younger and less educated speakers saying hat, back, and sad.

Speaker 0

但字母 a 被用于这两种发音——a 和 ah 音,因此拼写从未真正改变过。

But the letter a was used for both sounds, the a and the ah sounds, so the spelling never really changed.

Speaker 0

因此,我们在这里看到字母 a 如何从其原始的 ah 音扩展到也代表 ah 音,这种用法被保留为我们所谓的短 a 音。

So here, we see how the letter a expanded from its original ah sound to also represent the ah sound in English, and that use is preserved as our so called short a sound.

Speaker 0

顺便提一下,我应该指出,ah 和 ah 音之间的这种波动在十七世纪初之后仍在继续,尤其是在接下来的世纪里,英格兰南部的说话者将这个音再次降为 ah,应用于一大类单词。

As an aside, I should note that this fluctuation between ah and ah continued after the early sixteen hundreds, most notably in the following century when speakers in Southern England moved the sound back down to ah in a whole class of words.

Speaker 0

这一类单词包括 class 本身,它逐渐被发音为 class。

That class included the word class itself, which came to be pronounced as class.

Speaker 0

当这个 a 元音出现在某些辅音前,比如 s 音、f 音和 th 音时,该音再次降低为 ah,从而形成了今天与英格兰南部相关的发音。

When that a vowel sound appeared before certain consonant sounds like the s sound and the f sound and the t h sound, the the sound once again lowered to ah, thereby giving us the pronunciations associated with Southern England today.

Speaker 0

这包括 class、bath、lost、dance、path 等单词。

That includes words like class, bath, lost, dance, path, and so on.

Speaker 0

但同样,这是后来在英格兰南部发生并传播到澳大利亚和新西兰等地的演变。

But again, that was a later development that took place in Southern England and then spread to places like Australia and New Zealand.

Speaker 0

所以在我们故事的这个阶段——17世纪初,说话者还没有做出这种区分。

So at the current point in our story in the early sixteen hundreds, speakers didn't make that distinction yet.

Speaker 0

他们不会区分fat和fast,或者bat和bath。

They didn't contrast fat and fast or bat and bath.

Speaker 0

他们会用相同的元音发音所有这些词,就像今天的北美或英格兰北部人那样。

They would have pronounced all of those with the same vowel just like someone from North America or Northern England does today.

Speaker 0

但同样,无论你说class还是class,拼写都是一样的,因为自诺曼征服以来,字母a就被用来表示英语中的这两种发音。

But again, whether you say class or class, it's spelled the same way because the letter a has been used to represent both sounds in English since the Norman conquest.

Speaker 0

所以这就是字母a的所谓短音。

So that's the so called short sound of letter a.

Speaker 0

但长a音呢?

But what about the long a sound?

Speaker 0

它是我们听到像cake、tape和face这些词中的a音。

It's the a sound we hear in words like cake, tape, and face.

Speaker 0

如果字母a的原始发音是‘啊’,那为什么我们用它来拼写所有这些带有a音的单词呢?

If the original sound of letter a was ah, why do we use it to spell all of those words with the a sound?

Speaker 0

好吧,这里的答案是元音大推移。

Well, here, the answer is the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

在这些词中,字母a所代表的音有着不同的历史,因为它的原始发音比我们刚才提到的短a音要长一些。

In those words, the sound represented by letter a has a different history because the sound was originally pronounced longer than the short a sound that we just looked at.

Speaker 0

所以人们说话时会把这个音拖得稍长一点,这就使它成为一个独立的音。

So it was held slightly longer when people spoke, and that made it a distinct sound.

Speaker 0

在现代英语中,元音的长短没有过去那么重要了,但仍然在一定程度上存在。

Vowel length isn't as important in modern English as it once was, but it still exists to a certain extent.

Speaker 0

无论如何,那些原本发音较长的元音都在15世纪开始的所谓元音大推移现象中发生了变化。

Anyway, the vowel sounds that were pronounced longer all shifted around as part of the phenomenon called the great vowel shift that began in the fourteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

它被称为元音大推移,因为它影响了英语中一整系列的元音,这些元音彼此之间相互移动,就像玩音乐椅游戏一样。

It's called the great vowel shift because it affected an entire series of vowel sounds in English, which all moved around in relation to each other, kind of like a game of musical chairs.

Speaker 0

我在第141到143集讨论过元音大推移,可以去听听那些集数,了解这些变化的详细内容。

I discussed the great vowel shift back in episodes one forty one through one forty three, so check out those episodes for a detailed discussion about those changes.

Speaker 0

但对于字母a而言,元音大推移改变了我们在英语中使用该字母的方式,因为拼写方式已经固定,而元音发音却继续发生变化。

But for purposes of letter a, the great vowel shift changed the way we use the letter in English because spellings were locked in place while the vowel sound continued to shift around.

Speaker 0

记住,字母a的原始发音是‘啊’。

Remember that the original sound of letter a was ah.

Speaker 0

在这种情况下,是那个音的长音版本。

In this case, the longer version of that sound.

Speaker 0

因此,字母a最初被用于那些含有该发音的单词。

So the letter a was originally applied to words that had that sound.

Speaker 0

在英语的早期阶段,像name、make和hate这样的词都发‘啊’音。

And in earlier periods of English, words like name, make, and hate all had that ah sound.

Speaker 0

所以人们说的是‘nom’、‘mock’和‘hot’。

So people said nom, mock, and hot.

Speaker 0

由于它们原本发‘啊’音,因此拼写时使用了字母a。

Since they originally had that ah sound, they were spelled with an a.

Speaker 0

但随后,作为元音大推移的一部分,这些发音开始发生变化。

But then the sound began to change as part of the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

事实上,这些词中的发音并不仅仅改变了一次。

In fact, in those words, the sound didn't just change once.

Speaker 0

在几个世纪的时间里,它经历了多次变化。

It changed several times over the course of a couple of centuries.

Speaker 0

发音从ah变成了ah到to再到a。

The sound went from ah to ah to to to a.

Speaker 0

所以现代单词make最初是mock,然后变成mac,再变成mech,接着变成make,最后还是make。

So the modern word make started as mock, and then became mac, and then became mech, and then became make, and then became make.

Speaker 0

再次强调,mock、mac、mech、mech、make。

Again, mock, mac, mech, mech, make.

Speaker 0

这一演变过程从16世纪初持续到18世纪。

That evolution extended from the early 15 hundreds through the seventeen hundreds.

Speaker 0

由于这种长期的元音变化,今天我们用字母a来表示name、make、hate、cake、flame、take、haste、save等词中的这个a音。

And as a result of that long term vowel change, we use the letter a today to represent that a sound in words like name, make, hate, cake, flame, take, haste, save, and so on.

Speaker 0

请注意,所有这些词都是a后面跟着一个辅音,再加一个不发音的e,用来表明a发长音。

And notice that all of those words have an a followed by a consonant, and then a silent e to indicate that the letter a is pronounced as a long a.

Speaker 0

现代英语中大多数遵循这一模式的单词都有这样的历史。

Most of the words in modern English that follow that pattern have that history.

Speaker 0

那么,在我们整个英语发展历程的早期17世纪初,这些词的发音是什么样的呢?

So what was the sound of those words at the current point in our overall story of English in the early sixteen hundreds?

Speaker 0

当时,我们正处于大元音 Shift 的中间阶段,因此发音正在变化。

Well, at that time, we were somewhere in the middle of the great battle shift, so the sound was changing.

Speaker 0

各种拼写改革者留下的发音描述也表明他们对这一音存在一些不确定性。

And the surviving descriptions of the sound by the various spelling reformers indicate some uncertainty about the sound as well.

Speaker 0

这个音可能在ah和e之间来回波动。

The sound was probably fluctuating between ah and and e.

Speaker 0

因此,对于‘bake the cake’这个短语,你可能会听到一些年长且受过教育的说话者用旧式发音说成‘back the cack’或‘back the keck’。

So for the phrase bake the cake, you would have heard some older and educated speakers say back the cack or back the keck in the older way.

Speaker 0

但你也会听到一些人说‘bake the cake’,这正是我们现代发音的前身。

But you would have also heard some people saying, bake the cake, which was a precursor of our modern pronunciation.

Speaker 0

事实上,亚历山大·吉尔在1619年写道,他注意到伦敦周围有一些人,他称之为‘mopsies’,这些人已经使用这种新发音,尽管他并不喜欢。

And in fact, Alexander Gill, writing in 1619, acknowledged that there were people around London who he called mopsies that used that newer pronunciation even though he didn't like it.

Speaker 0

他有点守旧,更喜欢旧式的发音。

He was a bit old fashioned and preferred the older pronunciations.

Speaker 0

这就是短音a和长音a,以及它们在17世纪初可能的发音方式。

So that's the short a and long a sounds, and how they were probably being pronounced in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

到目前为止,我们已经看到字母a在英语中如何从原本的ah音扩展,涵盖了如ah和a这样的其他音。

And so far, we've seen how the letter a was extended in English from its original ah sound to encompass additional sounds like ah and a.

Speaker 0

而这些新音实际上被认为是现代英语中字母a的标准发音。

And those newer sounds are in fact considered to be the standard sounds of the letter in modern English.

Speaker 0

现在,在我们继续讨论字母a之前,还有一组单词拼写中包含a,它们具有我们刚刚讨论过的长音a,但这些单词的拼写方式略有不同。

Now before we move on from letter a, we have another group of words that are spelled with an a and which have the same long a sound that we just examined, but these words are spelled a little differently.

Speaker 0

这些单词拼写中使用的是y或i。

These words are spelled with a y or a I.

Speaker 0

在过去,i和y在一定程度上可以互换,因此y和i实际上是同一种拼写的两种变体。

At one time, i's and y's were somewhat interchangeable, so a y and a I are really just two variations of the same spelling.

Speaker 0

这一组单词包括day、way、made、m a I d、pain、p a I n、nail、bait等。

This group of words includes words like day, way, made, m a I d, pain, p a I n, nail, bait, and so on.

Speaker 0

那么,为什么这些词要用 y 或 i 来拼写,而不是用 a 加一个不发音的 e 呢?

So why are these words spelled with a y or a I instead of a and a silent e at the end.

Speaker 0

事实上,有时候这两种拼法都存在。

In fact, sometimes we have both.

Speaker 0

我们有 made(m a I d),指替你打扫房子的人,还有 made(m a d e),作为 make 的过去式。

We have made, m a I d, like someone who cleans your house, and made, m a d e, as in the past tense of make.

Speaker 0

我们有 pain(p a I n),指疼痛的东西,还有 pain(p a n e),指窗玻璃。

And we have pain, p a I n, as in something that hurts, and pain, p a n e, as in a windowpane.

Speaker 0

这两组词拼写不同的原因是,它们过去曾经发音不同。

The reason why these two groups of words are spelled differently is because they were once pronounced differently.

Speaker 0

它们并不像今天这样押韵。

They didn't rhyme like they do today.

Speaker 0

记住,我们不能被现代发音所误导,因为发音会随着时间改变。

Remember that we can't be deceived by modern pronunciations because pronunciations have changed over time.

Speaker 0

在中古英语时期,a I 或 a y 的拼写方式被发展出来,用来表示一个听起来类似于 I 的元音。

The a I or a y spelling developed in Middle English to represent a vowel that sounded something like I.

Speaker 0

所以在中古英语时期,单词 'day' 的发音更接近 'die',因此逐渐拼写为 d a y。

So in the Middle English period, the word day was pronounced more like die, and it came to be spelled d a y.

Speaker 0

有趣的是,这种原始发音又重新出现在某些现代英语方言中。

Interestingly, that original sound has worked its way back around and has reappeared in these words in some modern dialects of English.

Speaker 0

你可以在澳大利亚口音中听到这种发音,比如 'day' 常被读作 'die',在问候语 'good day' 中,这种浓重口音下会说成 'good eye'。

You can hear that pronunciation in a broad Australian accent where day is often pronounced as die, like in the greeting good day, which is rendered in that broad accent as good eye.

Speaker 0

所以,这就是以 y 或 i 拼写的这一组词的原始发音。

So that was the original sound in this group of words spelled with a y or a I.

Speaker 0

但同样地,这些词中的元音发音随着时间发生了变化。

But, again, the vowel sound in those words changed over time.

Speaker 0

它从 /aɪ/ 变成了 /eɪ/,再变成了 /e/。

It went from I to to to a a.

Speaker 0

因此,对于 'day' 这个词,它的演变过程大致是:die → de → day → day。

So for the word day, the evolution was something like die, de, day, day.

Speaker 0

这些变化持续了几个世纪,在此过程中,这一组词的元音发音与我们刚才提到的、如今以不发音 e 结尾的词的元音发音合并了。

The changes took place over a couple of centuries, and along the way, the vowel sound in that group of words merged with the vowel sound in the words we looked at a moment ago, the ones that are spelled today with a silent e.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么这两组词今天拥有相同的元音发音。

And that's why both groups of words have the same vowel sound today.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么我们能让 Maine(缅因州,拼写为 m a I n)和 Maine(拼写为 m a n e)押韵的原因。

It's why we can rhyme Maine, m a I n, and Maine, m a n e.

Speaker 0

这些词的元音发音何时合并的问题尚有争议,但很可能是在16世纪和17世纪逐渐发生的。

The point at which the vowel sounds in those words merged is a matter of some debate, but it probably happened gradually in the fifteen hundreds and sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

因此,这种合并很可能发生在我们整个英语演变故事的当前阶段,也就是17世纪初。

So the merger was probably happening around the current point in our overall story of English in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

如果你在17世纪初漫步伦敦街头,你可能会听到一些保守的说话者仍然把 day 发音为 die,但你也会听到人们使用新的发音,比如 de 和 day。

If you were walking the streets of London in the early sixteen hundreds, you would have probably heard some conservative speakers still pronouncing the word day as die, but you would have also heard people using the newer pronunciations like de and day.

Speaker 0

同样,那些拼写为 I 或 y 的词中的元音有着自己独特的演变历史,过去几个世纪里发生了很大变化。

Again, the vowel sound in those words spelled with a I or a y has its own unique history, and it's changed a lot over the past few centuries.

Speaker 0

在继续之前,再简单提一点。

One other quick note before we move on.

Speaker 0

我们还用字母 a 与 w 或 u 组合来表示英语中的另一个音,即 ah 音。

We also use the letter a in combination with the letter w or u to indicate another sound in English, the ah sound.

Speaker 0

我们用字母 u 来拼写像 cause、taught、haunt、author 和 August 这样的词。

We use a u to spell words like cause, taught, haunt, author, and August.

Speaker 0

我们用字母 w 来拼写像 law、thaw、raw、dawn 和 hawk 这样的词。

And we use a w to spell words like law, thaw, raw, dawn, and hawk.

Speaker 0

你可能记得,在之前的节目中提到过,过去 u 和 w 在某种程度上是可以互换的。

You might remember from earlier episodes that the letters u and w were somewhat interchangeable in the past.

Speaker 0

所以 u 和 w 其实只是同一种拼写方式的不同变体。

So a u and a w are really just variations of the same spelling.

Speaker 0

那么 u 和 w 到底是怎么回事呢?

So what's the deal with a u and a w?

Speaker 0

同样,这是英语中曾经有一个特定的元音音,但却没有对应的字母来表示它的情况。

Well, again, this is a case where English had a specific vowel sound, but didn't have a letter to represent that sound.

Speaker 0

因此,抄写员不得不想办法表示这个音,而后来这个音本身也发生了变化。

So scribes had to come up with a way to represent the sound, and then the sound changed.

Speaker 0

最初,这个音是 ow。

Originally, the sound was ow.

Speaker 0

这个 ow 音实际上是由两个不同音组合而成的,语言学家称之为双元音。

That ow sound is actually a combination of two different sounds, so it's what linguists call a diphthong.

Speaker 0

它大致从 ah 音开始,以 u 音结束。

It sort of begins with the ah sound and ends with the u sound.

Speaker 0

由于这两个音通常分别用 a 和 u 表示,抄写员就将这两个字母组合起来表示这个音。

And since those two sounds were usually spelled with a and u, scribes just combine those two letters to represent that sound.

Speaker 0

今天,语言学家在用音标拼写这个音时,仍然使用同样的组合。

And linguists use that same combination today when they want to spell that sound phonetically.

Speaker 0

但最初,这个音确实是 ow。

But again, that original sound was ow.

Speaker 0

我前面提到的那些词之所以用 u 或 w 拼写,是因为它们原本带有 owl 音。

And words like those I mentioned earlier are spelled with a u or a w because they originally had that owl sound.

Speaker 0

所以人们说 cows 而不是 cause,说 tout 而不是 tot。

So people said cows instead of cause and tout instead of tot.

Speaker 0

根据十五世纪末到十六世纪初大多数拼写改革者的说法,当时这些词仍然保留着 owl 音。

According to most of the spelling reformers who were writing in the late fifteen hundreds and early sixteen hundreds, those words still had that owl sound at the time.

Speaker 0

尽管罗伯特·罗宾逊在1617年首次指出这个元音发音已经开始发生变化。

Though Robert Robinson writing in 1617 was the first to indicate that the vowel sound was starting to change.

Speaker 0

在17世纪和18世纪期间,这个发音逐渐从‘owl’转变为‘all’,从而形成了今天大多数单词所使用的标准发音。

It gradually shifted from owl to all over the course of the sixteen hundreds and seventeen hundreds, which gave us the standard pronunciation used in most of those words today.

Speaker 0

所以,再次强调,在我们故事当前的时间点——17世纪初,大多数人仍然说‘cows’和‘tout’。

So, again, at the current point in our overall story in the early sixteen hundreds, most people still said cows and tout.

Speaker 0

但如果你当时在场,你可能会遇到一些人已经开始说‘cause’和‘tot’,而这些最终演变成了‘cause’和‘tot’。

But if you were around at the time, you would have probably encountered a few people who were starting to say cause and tot, which eventually became cause and tot.

Speaker 0

这就是u和w的简要历史。

So that's the quick history of a u and a w.

Speaker 0

关于字母a及其在近几个世纪中的各种用法,我们已经讲了很多,但还远未结束。

Now that's a lot of information about letter a and the various ways in which it's been used over the recent centuries, but we're not entirely done with that letter yet.

Speaker 0

我们之后还会在e a和o a这样的拼写中再次遇到它,但这些内容最好等到我们讨论其他元音字母时再详细说明。

We're going to encounter it again in spellings like e a and o a, but those are better addressed when we get to those other vowel letters.

Speaker 0

那么,让我们继续下一个字母,当然就是b。

So let's move on to the next letter, which of course is b.

Speaker 0

B 是一个辅音字母,幸运的是,这个字母的历史要简单得多。

B is a consonant letter, and fortunately, the history of this letter is much more straightforward.

Speaker 0

字母 b 所代表的发音几个世纪以来一直相当稳定,几乎没有变化,但我们确实有一些单词中的 b 是不发音的,比如 doubt 和 debt。

The sound represented by letter b has been pretty consistent over the centuries and hasn't really changed, but we do have a few silent b's in words like doubt and debt.

Speaker 0

正如我们在第 153 集中所看到的,这些字母在英语中从来就没有被发音过。

As we saw back in episode one fifty three, those letters were really never pronounced in English.

Speaker 0

它们被添加进来是因为这些词的拉丁语词根中含有 b,因为在拉丁语中它们原本是发 b 音的。

They were added because the Latin roots of those words had a b in them because they were pronounced with a b sound in Latin.

Speaker 0

但在这些词传入英语之前,b 的发音就已经消失了。

But that b sound had disappeared before those words made their way to English.

Speaker 0

所以它们最初拼写时并没有 b,而且一旦 b 被加上后,没有任何证据表明有人曾读出过这个 b 音。

So they were originally spelled without a b, and there's no indication that anyone pronounced those b's once they were added in.

Speaker 0

我们还有一些源自古英语的单词末尾有不发音的 b,比如 dumb、lamb、climb、comb 和 womb,以及一些从法语借来的词,比如 tomb、bomb 和 succumb。

We also have silent b's at the end of some words from old English, like dumb, lamb, climb, comb, and womb, as well as some words borrowed from French, like tomb, bomb, and succumb.

Speaker 0

这些 b 的存在是因为,这些词的原形或早期形式中,词尾或某处确实曾经存在过 b 的发音。

Those b's are there because, again, there was once a b sound at the end of those words or in some part of the earlier version of those words.

Speaker 0

在这些情况下,b 在中世纪时曾被发音,但证据表明,到17世纪初时,它们都已变为无声。

And in those cases, the b's were once pronounced in the Middle Ages, but the evidence suggests that they were all silent by the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

15和16世纪进行拼写改革的人,在为这些词提供语音描述时,并未在词尾加上b。

The spelling reformers who included phonetic descriptions of those words in the 15 and 16 didn't include a b at the end.

Speaker 0

我们还有莎士比亚的证据,他将这些词与其他从未以b音结尾的词押韵。

We also have evidence from Shakespeare who rhymed those words with other words that never had a b sound at the end.

Speaker 0

例如,他将‘climb’与‘time’和‘crime’押韵。

So for example, he rhymed at the word climb with the words time and crime.

Speaker 0

所有这些证据表明,如果你在17世纪初漫步于伦敦,你不会听到这些词词尾的b音。

All of that evidence suggests that you would not have heard a b sound at the end of those words if you were walking around London in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

到那时,它们已经消失了。

They were gone by then.

Speaker 0

这就是字母b的情况。

So that's letter b.

Speaker 0

那字母c呢?

What about letter c?

Speaker 0

关于这个字母,主要要注意的是,它在英语中有两种常见的发音,即所谓的硬音和软音。

Well, the main comment to make about that letter is that it has two common pronunciations in English, the so called hard and soft sounds of letter c.

Speaker 0

硬音是类似于字母k的/k/音,而软音则是我们与字母s关联的音。

The hard sound is the k sound that we associate with letter k, and the soft sound is the sound that we associate with letter s.

Speaker 0

硬音/k/是字母c的原始发音,可以追溯到拉丁语,当它出现在元音a、o和u前时,我们仍然沿用这种发音。

The hard k sound is the original sound of the letter c going back to Latin, and we still use the letter in that way when it appears before the vowels a, o, and u.

Speaker 0

例如,在cat、cot、cold、cut和cute这样的单词中。

For example, in words like cat, cot, cold, cut, and cute.

Speaker 0

当字母c出现在元音e和i前时,通常发软音。

And the letter usually has the soft sound when it appears before the vowel letters e and I.

Speaker 0

例如,在civil、city、cemetery和central这样的单词中。

For example, in words like civil, city, cemetery, and central.

Speaker 0

当然,也有例外情况,但这是普遍规则。

Of course, there are exceptions, but that's the general rule.

Speaker 0

字母c的这两种不同发音是在中世纪出现的。

Those two distinct sounds of the letter emerged in the Middle Ages.

Speaker 0

我之前几集中解释过这个过程,特别是第五集,那里对这一发展有很好的讨论。

I explained that process in earlier episodes, specifically episode five, which has a good discussion about that development.

Speaker 0

但这里的主要观点是,到16世纪时,这种用法已经根深蒂固,而英语拼写也正是在那时开始固定下来的。

But the main point here is that it was firmly entrenched by the fifteen hundreds when English spelling started to become fixed.

Speaker 0

当时的英国印刷商和作家遵循了传统做法,也就是法国的做法——在这些词中保留字母c,而不是用k或s替代。

English printers and writers followed the traditional practice, which was really the French practice of maintaining the letter c in those words rather than substituting a k or an s.

Speaker 0

这是因为人们认为读者可以根据其后的元音轻松判断c的发音。

And that was because it was thought that readers could easily determine how to pronounce the c based on the vowel sound that followed it.

Speaker 0

因此,当英语拼写标准化时,这些c就被保留了下来。

So when English spelling was standardized, those c's were preserved.

Speaker 0

到了17世纪初,这些c的发音几乎和今天一样。

And in the early sixteen hundreds, those c's would have been pronounced pretty much the same as today.

Speaker 0

但像ocean、social、facial和precious这些词中的字母c呢?

But what about the letter c in words like ocean, and social, and facial, and precious?

Speaker 0

在这些词中,c发的音通常用sh来拼写。

In those words, it has a sound, which we would usually spell with s h.

Speaker 0

那么,为什么这些词要用字母 c 拼写呢?

So why are those words spelled with a c?

Speaker 0

嗯,你大概能猜到答案。

Well, you can probably guess the answer.

Speaker 0

同样,这些词中的发音随着时间发生了变化。

Again, the sound changed in those words over time.

Speaker 0

在我提到的所有词中——ocean、social、facial 和 precious——c 都出现在 e 或 i 前面,所以我们预期它发 s 的音。

In all of those words I mentioned, ocean, social, facial, and precious, the c appears before an e or an I, so we would expect the s sound.

Speaker 0

在十五世纪中期,英语拼写逐渐规范化时,这些词确实就是发这个音的。

Well, that was the sound used in those words in the mid fifteen hundreds when English spelling was becoming regular.

Speaker 0

所以当时人们会说 ocean,而不是 ocean;说 social,而不是 social;说 precious,而不是 precious。

So people would have said ocean instead of ocean, and social instead of social, and precious instead of precious.

Speaker 0

这就是这些词之所以这样拼写的原因。

That's why those words are spelled that way.

Speaker 0

这一点也得到了大多数拼写改革者,比如十五世纪中期的约翰·哈特的证实。

And that's confirmed by most of the spelling reformers, like John Hart in the mid 15 hundreds.

Speaker 0

但这些词的现代发音是在稍后一段时间才开始出现的。

But the modern sound in those words started to appear a short time later.

Speaker 0

到了16世纪末和17世纪初,现代发音开始浮现。

By the late 15 hundreds and early sixteen hundreds, the modern pronunciation was starting to emerge.

Speaker 0

在第172集中,我讨论了这一变化,并引用了莎士比亚的作品作为例子,表明他很可能同时使用了这两种发音。

In episode one seventy two, I discussed that development and gave examples from Shakespeare, which showed that he probably used both pronunciations.

Speaker 0

再次强调,当时这种发音正处于过渡阶段。

Again, it was a sound in transition at the time.

Speaker 0

这就是字母c的情况。

So that's letter c.

Speaker 0

我们现在可以进入字母d了,但我对d没什么好说的。

We can now move on to letter d, but I don't have much to say about d.

Speaker 0

d是一个辅音字母,它在历史上变化不大。

D is a consonant letter, and it hasn't changed very much over time.

Speaker 0

所以我不打算在这里花时间讨论它。

So I'm not going to spend any time on it here.

展开剩余字幕(还有 327 条)
Speaker 0

这就带我们来到了另一个元音字母——字母e。

And that brings us to another vowel letter, the letter e.

Speaker 0

正如我们所知,元音字母很棘手,因为它们代表多个发音,而且这些发音在历史上发生过多次变化。

As we know, vowel letters are tricky because they represent multiple sounds, and the sounds have a history of shifting around.

Speaker 0

让我们先指出,字母e的原始发音可以追溯到拉丁语,是/a/音。

Let's begin by noting that the original sound of letter e going all the way back to Latin was a.

Speaker 0

在大多数其他欧洲语言中,这个发音至今仍然常见,而且在近几个世纪从其他语言借入的单词中,我们仍然保留着这个发音。

That's still the common sound of the letter in most other European languages, and we still have it in words borrowed from other languages in recent centuries.

Speaker 0

我们在像cafe、fiance、resume、ballet、buffet、beret、gourmet、anime等词的末尾能听到这种传统的e发音。

We hear that traditional sound of e at the end of words like cafe, fiance, resume, ballet, buffet, beret, gourmet, anime, and others.

Speaker 0

但当然,在英语内部,我们把这个字母与其它发音联系在一起。

But, of course, within English, we associate that letter with other sounds.

Speaker 0

就像字母a一样,字母e也代表两种常见的发音,分别被称为短音和长音。

Just like letter a, letter e also represents two common sounds that are referred to as its short and long sounds.

Speaker 0

字母e的短音体现在pet、web、bed和mess这些词中。

The short sound of letter e is as in pet, web, bed, and mess.

Speaker 0

字母e单独出现在辅音前时,通常发这个音,这种短音自英语在中世纪早期采用拉丁字母以来就相当稳定。

The letter e by itself before a consonant usually represents that sound, and that short sound has been pretty stable since English adopted the Latin alphabet in the early Middle Ages.

Speaker 0

所以关于所谓的短e音,我其实没什么更多可说的了。

So I don't really have anything else to say about the so called short e sound.

Speaker 0

但长e音就复杂一些,因为众所周知,所有的长元音都受到了大元音 Shift 的影响。

But the long e sound is a bit more complicated because, as we know, all of the long vowel sounds were affected by the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

如今,字母e的长音是/e/,比如bee、tree、feet、cheese、beef、weed、needle等词。

Today, the long sound of letter e is e, as in bee, tree, feet, cheese, beef, weed, needle, and so on.

Speaker 0

记住元音字母长音的一个简单技巧是:它和字母本身的名称相同,因为我们用长音作为字母的名称。

A simple trick to remember the long sound of a vowel letter is that it's the same as the name of the letter because we use the long sound as the name of the letter.

Speaker 0

所以字母a的长音是/a/,字母e的长音是/e/。

So the long sound of letter a is a, and the long sound of letter e is e.

Speaker 0

正如你可能已经注意到的,今天我们通常通过双写字母e来标记这个长e音。

As you may have noticed, we usually mark that long e sound today by doubling the letter e.

Speaker 0

过去,书写者也曾在词尾使用不发音的e来标记长音,就像我们对字母a所做的那样,但书写者和印刷商更倾向于双写e,这最终成为英语中更标准的拼写方式。

At one time, writers also used the silent e at the end of a word to mark the long sound, just like we do with letter a, but writers and printers preferred to double the e, and that became the more standard spelling in English.

Speaker 0

正如我们前面所见,字母e的原始发音更接近a。

Now as we saw earlier, the original sound of letter e was more like a.

Speaker 0

因此,我们今天拼写为双e的大多数单词,过去都发那个原始的a音。

So most of the words that we have today that are spelled with a double e once had that original a sound.

Speaker 0

所以'tree'原本是'tray','cheese'原本是'chase','weed'原本是'weighed'。

So tree was originally tray, and cheese was originally chase, and weed was originally weighed.

Speaker 0

但随后的元音大推移改变了这些词的发音方式。

But then the great vowel shift changed the way those words were pronounced.

Speaker 0

在15世纪和16世纪,人们在发音时开始略微抬高舌头的前部。

And in the fourteen hundreds and fifteen hundreds, people started to raise the front of their tongues a bit when they pronounce those words.

Speaker 0

在这个过程中,发音从a上移变成了e。

And in the process, the sound shifted from a up to e.

Speaker 0

于是'tray'变成了'tree','chase'变成了'cheese',以此类推。

So became tree, and became cheese, and so on.

Speaker 0

这是一个非常简单的改变,到16世纪末时基本已经完成。

It was a very simple change, and it was mostly in place by the end of the fifteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

所以在英语发展的整个故事中,到目前这个阶段,那个变化已经发生,这些双e单词的发音几乎和今天一样。

So at the current point in our overall story of English, that change had already occurred, and those double e words were pronounced pretty much the same as today.

Speaker 0

在此过程中,字母e的发音被扩展为我们现在所称的长e音。

And along the way, the sound of letter e was extended to this e sound, the sound that we call the long e sound today.

Speaker 0

我之前说过,抄写员和印刷商通常用双e来表示这个长e音,但法国抄写员使用的另一种方法是在e前或e后加上i,从而形成ei或ie的字母组合来表示这个音。

Now I said that scribes and printers usually represented that long e sound by doubling the e's, I but another technique used by French scribes was to place an I before the e or after the e, thereby producing the e I or I e letter combination for that sound.

Speaker 0

这种拼写方式常被保留在从法语借来的单词中,有时甚至也被应用于本土英语单词。

That spelling was often retained in words that were taken from French and was sometimes even applied to native English words.

Speaker 0

我们在grieve、chief、brief、field、receive、ceiling等词中可以看到这种替代拼写。

And we see that alternate spelling in words like grieve, chief, brief, field, receive, ceiling, and so on.

Speaker 0

但同样,这些词的语音历史本质上和tree、bee、feet等词相同。

But again, most of those words have essentially the same phonetic history as words like tree and bee and feet.

Speaker 0

它们经历了相同的元音变化。

They experienced the same vowel shift.

Speaker 0

只是用稍有不同的拼写来表示相同的发音。

They just use a slightly different spelling to represent the same sound.

Speaker 0

现在我们需要为这个带有e音的单词谜题再添加一块拼图。

Now we need to add one more piece to this puzzle of words with the e sound.

Speaker 0

我们已经讨论了像tree和feet这样的双e单词,也讨论了像chief和receive这样的ie和ei单词。

We've covered the double e words like tree and feet, and we've covered the I e and e I words like chief and receive.

Speaker 0

这些单词的元音历史本质上是相同的。

Again, those words have essentially the same vowel history.

Speaker 0

它们只是用不同的拼写方式来表示同一个音。

They just employ different spellings for the same sound.

Speaker 0

但现在我们必须加入那些拼写为ea的单词,比如please、speak、clean、heat、leap、seat等等。

But now we have to add in words spelled with e a, like please, speak, clean, heat, leap, seat, and so on.

Speaker 0

同样,这一组单词今天发的e音与其他单词相同。

Again, this group of words have the same e sound as those other words today.

Speaker 0

那么,ea只是同一个音的另一种拼写方式吗?

So was e a just another alternate spelling for the same sound?

Speaker 0

不,并不是。

Well, no.

Speaker 0

ea 这个拼写曾经用于表示不同的发音,但后来这个发音发生了变化,与之前那些单词中的 e 音合并了。

The e a spelling was once used for a different sound, but again, the sound shifted and merged with the e sound in those other words.

Speaker 0

由于这些 ea 单词的拼写早已固定,它们在历史发展中保留了这种拼写形式。

And since the spelling of these e a words was already locked in place, they've retained that spelling over time.

Speaker 0

同样,拼写往往能告诉我们一个单词的语音历史。

Again, spellings often tell us the phonetic history of a word.

Speaker 0

ea 这个拼写最初是用来表示那个音的。

The e a spelling was originally used for the sound.

Speaker 0

那就是我们在 pet 和 set 这类词中听到的音,但在这里,它的发音更长。

That's the same sound we hear in words like pet and set, but in this case, it was pronounced longer.

Speaker 0

所以,它是一个长音,而不是短音。

So it was the long sound instead of a short sound.

Speaker 0

对于这个较长的 e 音,抄写员们似乎觉得需要用一种不同的方式来表示它。

And for this longer e sound, scribes apparently felt the need to represent it in a different way.

Speaker 0

于是他们将 e 和 a 组合起来,创造了 ea 这个拼写。

So they combined e and a and came up with the e a spelling.

Speaker 0

从语音上讲,这个音的发音介于字母e和a的传统发音之间,也就是在a和ah之间。

Phonetically speaking, this sound is pronounced somewhere between the traditional sound of letter e and letter a, so somewhere between a and ah.

Speaker 0

鉴于这是一个介于两者之间的音,用e和a组合来表示这个音是合理的。

Given that this was an in between sound, it made sense to combine e and a to represent that sound.

Speaker 0

因此,像feast这样的词曾经发音为thest,这种发音在相关的单词festival中仍然可以听到。

So a word like feast was once pronounced as thest, a sound still heard in the related word festival.

Speaker 0

像reed这样的词曾经发音为red,这种发音在该词的过去式中仍然存在,比如我昨天读了这本书(I read the book yesterday)。

And a word like reed was once pronounced red, a sound still heard in the past tense form of the word, as in I read the book yesterday.

Speaker 0

而leave这个词曾经发音为lev,这种发音在它的过去式left中仍然可以听到。

And the word leave was once pronounced as lev, a sound still heard in the past tense form left.

Speaker 0

但同样,随着时间的推移,大多数带有这个音和ea拼写的词在大元音推移中经历了元音变化。

But again, over time, most of the words with that sound and that e a spelling experienced a vowel shift under the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

这个音最初升高为a,后来又进一步升高为e。

The sound was initially raised to a and then later raised again to e.

Speaker 0

因此,像feast这样的词从fest变为fest,再变为feast。

So a word like feast went from fest to fest to feast.

Speaker 0

我应该指出,这种元音变化并没有发生在所有拼写为 e a 的单词中。

Now I should note that this vowel change did not occur in all of these words spelled with the e a.

Speaker 0

在一些单词中,音质实际上从未真正改变过。

In some of them, the quality of the sound never really changed.

Speaker 0

它只是变得稍微短了一些。

It just became a little shorter.

Speaker 0

因此,我们在像 head、death、bread、sweat、spread、weather、measure、ready 等词中发现了这种古老的 e a 拼写形式。

And that's why we find that old e a spelling in words like head, death, death, bread, sweat, spread, weather, measure, ready, and so on.

Speaker 0

这些词保留了原始的发音。

Those words retain an original pronunciation.

Speaker 0

它们只是使用了稍微短一点的版本。

They just use a slightly shorter version of it.

Speaker 0

而在其他单词中,随着元音的演变,有些词的发音卡在了原始音和现代 e 音之间的中间位置。

And as the sound shifted in the other words, some of them got stuck in the middle between the original sound and the modern e sound.

Speaker 0

请记住,这个音变经历了两个独立的步骤。

Remember the sound shifted in two separate steps.

Speaker 0

它从一个音变成了另一个音,然后再演变为 e 音。

It went from to and then from to e.

Speaker 0

不过,有少数几个词停留在了中间阶段,这些词包括 great、steak(拼写为 s t e a k)和 break(拼写为 b r e a k)。

Well, a few of those words got stuck in the middle with the sound, and those words are great, steak, s t e a k, and break, b r e a k.

Speaker 0

但真正卡在中间阶段的词和名字其实很少。

But there are really only a few words and names that got stuck in that in between stage.

Speaker 0

大多数拼写为 e a 的词都演变成了今天我们使用的 e 音,比如 clean、seat、speak 等词。

Most of the words spelled with e a moved on to the e pronunciation that we use today in words like clean, seat, speak, and so on.

Speaker 0

那么,在我们整个故事的当前阶段——也就是17世纪初,这个元音在这些词中的状态是怎样的呢?

So what was the status of this vowel in those words at the current point in our overall story in the early sixteen hundreds?

Speaker 0

根据现存的描述来看,这个音正处于演变过程的中间阶段。

Well, from the surviving descriptions, it appears that the sound was midway through its evolution.

Speaker 0

它已经从原来的音变成了中间音,但还没完全变成 e 音。

It had gone from to but hadn't quite reached e yet.

Speaker 0

所以当时人们说的是 feast,而不是 feast;说的是 speck,而不是 speak。

So people were saying instead of feast and speck instead of speak.

Speaker 0

但亚历山大·吉尔给了我们更多相关信息。

But Alexander Gill gives us a little more information.

Speaker 0

记住,他是在我们故事的这个阶段,即1619年写作的,他说伦敦东部的人们用像我们今天一样的e音来发音这些词。

Remember that he was writing at the current point in our story in the year 1619, and he said that people who lived to the East Of London pronounced those words with an e sound like we do today.

Speaker 0

他说,那里的人们说的是一种他称为东部方言的口音。

He said that the people there spoke what he called the eastern dialect.

Speaker 0

根据他的描述,他们的发音非常先进,反映了语言的发展方向。

And based on his descriptions, they had a very advanced pronunciation that reflected where the language was headed.

Speaker 0

因此,他们像我们今天一样说feast和speak,而伦敦大多数人的说法仍然是feast和spake。

So they said feast and speak like we do today, whereas most of the people in London still said feast and spake.

Speaker 0

但关键在于,我们今天使用的ea拼写最初代表的是一种音,这个音作为大元音 Shift 的一部分发生了变化,最终与我们今天在许多其他单词中发现的e音合并了。

But the bottom line here is that the e a spelling that we use today originally represented a sound that changed as part of the great vowel shift, and it ultimately merged with the e sound that we find in so many other words.

Speaker 0

所以关于字母e,我们就讲到这里。

So that's enough about letter e.

Speaker 0

让我们继续下一个字母,f。

Let's move on to the next letter, f.

Speaker 0

关于字母f,我其实没什么好说的。

I don't really have much to say about f.

Speaker 0

自从拼写固定以来,f所代表的发音在英语中一直相当稳定,因此对今天的说话者来说并没有带来太多困难。

The sound it represents has been pretty stable in English since spellings became fixed, so it doesn't create many challenges for speakers today.

Speaker 0

我唯一要提到的是,我们还有用ph来表示f音的替代拼写,这种拼写几乎总是出现在源自希腊语的借词中。

My only note is that we also have the alternate p h spelling for the f sound, and that spelling is almost always found in loan words from Greek.

Speaker 0

古希腊语中有一种音,它在许多希腊词中演变成了f音,而希腊字母表中用phi这个字母来表示这个音。

Ancient Greek had a sound which evolved into the f sound in many Greek words, and the Greek alphabet had the letter phi to represent that sound.

Speaker 0

ph这个拼写是为了在这些借词中表示希腊字母phi。

The p h spelling is an attempt to represent that Greek letter phi in those loan words.

Speaker 0

因此,我们可以把它看作另一种词源拼写,其中拼写反映了某种早已消失或发生变化的古代发音。

So we can think of it as another type of etymology spelling where the spelling reflects some ancient sound that has long since disappeared or changed in some way.

Speaker 0

这就带我们来到了字母g。

And that takes us to letter g.

Speaker 0

与字母c类似,它也有所谓的硬音和软音。

Much like letter c, it also has a so called hard and soft sound.

Speaker 0

硬音发音是/g/,这是自罗马时代以来该字母的传统发音。

The hard pronunciation is g, and that's the traditional sound of the letter going all the way back to the Romans.

Speaker 0

当字母表传入英格兰时,盎格鲁-撒克逊人将字母g用于古英语中的相同发音。

When the alphabet was brought to England, the Anglo Saxons applied the letter g to the same sound in old English.

Speaker 0

我们在像game(游戏)、go(去)、goose(鹅)和good(好)这样的词中听到这种原始的硬音。

We hear that original hard sound in words like game, go, goose, and good.

Speaker 0

但随着法语在西欧从拉丁语演变而来,某些词中的发音开始发生变化。

But then as French evolved out of Latin in Western Europe, the sound started to change in some words.

Speaker 0

当g出现在e或i之前时,发音发生了变化,产生了所谓的软音。

When a g appeared before letters e or I, the sound changed and produced the so called soft sound of the letter.

Speaker 0

那就是/j/的发音。

That's the j sound.

Speaker 0

这是因为e和i所代表的发音是舌尖前部抬起发出的,而g音被略微向前拉向硬腭区域,从而形成了/j/音。

That happened because the sounds represented by e and I are pronounced with the front of the tongue raised, and the g sound was sort of pulled forward to the palate region, thereby creating that j sound.

Speaker 0

因此,当g出现在e和i之前时,它就变成了软g。

So the letter g became a soft g when it appeared before e and I.

Speaker 0

我们在单词如germ、gentle、giant、gender等中听到这个音。

We hear that sound in words like germ, gentle, giant, gender, and so on.

Speaker 0

正如你所知,g的软音实际上就是我们与字母j关联的同一个音。

Now as you know, the soft sound of g is actually the same sound we associate with letter j.

Speaker 0

它们都有/j/这个音。

They both have the j sound.

Speaker 0

那么,为什么我们要用两个不同的字母来表示这个音呢?

So why do we represent that sound with two different letters?

Speaker 0

正如我们稍后会看到的,这个音在拉丁语中并不存在,因此拉丁语没有对应的字母。

Well, as we'll see a little bit later, that sound didn't exist in Latin, so Latin didn't have a letter for it.

Speaker 0

这个音在古英语中也很罕见,所以古英语也没有专门的字母来表示它。

And the sound was rare in old English, so old English didn't have a specific letter for it either.

Speaker 0

这个音实际上是在法语中从其他音演变而来的。

The sound actually evolved out of other sounds in French.

Speaker 0

软g是法语中产生这一音的一种情况,而今天大多数使用软g的单词都是法语借词。

The soft g was one case where the sound emerged in French, and most words that use that soft g today are French loan words.

Speaker 0

另一个这种音在法语中出现的情况与字母I有关。

The other instance where the sound emerged in French was in relation to the letter I.

Speaker 0

我会稍后讨论这一发展过程,但这就是字母j的来源。

So I'll deal with that development a little later, but that's where the letter j came from.

Speaker 0

因此,今天我们用两个不同的字母来表示这个音,是因为这个音是通过两种不同的语音变化产生的。

So today, we have two different letters for the sound because the sound came about as a result of two different sound changes.

Speaker 0

而今天我们用来表示这个音的字母反映了这一历史。

And the letters we use today for that sound reflect that history.

Speaker 0

由于软g实际上是法语发展出来的,然后传入英语,因此当我们遇到gentle或gender这类词中的软g时,通常可以推断这个词源自法语。

Since the soft g was really a French development that passed to English, when we encounter those soft g's in words like gentle or gender, we can generally assume that the word came from French.

Speaker 0

而当我们遇到在e或i前的硬g时,通常可以推断这个词并非来自法语。

And when we encounter a hard g before e or I, we can generally assume that that word didn't come from French.

Speaker 0

像get、gear、give和girl这样的词,都是在法语影响传入之前就已存在于英语中的词。

So words like get, gear, give, and girl are words that were already in English before the French influence arrived.

Speaker 0

因此,它们保留了原本的硬g发音。

So they have retained their original hard g's.

Speaker 0

像 gecko 和 geyser 这样的词是后来从其他语言借入的词汇。

And words like gecko and geyser are more recent loan words from other languages.

Speaker 0

所以法语中的软 g 也不适用于这些词。

So the French soft g doesn't apply to those words either.

Speaker 0

现在,法语中的软 g 发展并没有影响到每一个词。

Now the soft g development in French didn't affect every word.

Speaker 0

即使在法语中,也有一些词在 e 或 i 前仍保留了硬 g 的发音。

Even in French, there were a few words that retained a hard g sound before e or I.

Speaker 0

在这些情况下,法语书写者必须找到一种方法,明确表明 g 仍保留其原始发音。

And in those cases, the French scribes had to figure out a way to make it clear that the g retained its original sound.

Speaker 0

于是他们创造了一种新的拼写方式。

So they came up with a new spelling.

Speaker 0

他们在 g 后面加上 u,作为表示硬 g 音的另一种方式,这种 gu 拼写逐渐成为在原本不明确时标记传统发音的常见方法。

They added a u after the g as an alternate way of indicating a hard g sound, and that g u spelling became a common way to indicate that traditional sound where it might not otherwise be clear.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么单词 guest(gu-e-s-t)要用 gu 而不是简单的 g 来拼写的原因。

That's why the word guest, g u e s t, is spelled with g u rather than a simple g.

Speaker 0

Gest 可能会让人误以为发音是 jest,因此使用 gu 拼写是为了明确 g 是硬音。

G e s t might imply that the pronunciation was jest, So the g u spelling was used to make it clear that the g was a hard g.

Speaker 0

我们还在 guide、guild、guitar 和 guilty 等词中,以及 disguise 这个词的中间部分,遇到这种 gu 拼写。

We also encounter that g u spelling in words like guide, guild, guitar, and guilty, as well as in the middle of the word disguise.

Speaker 0

这种法语拼写有时也被扩展到其他 g 音出现在其他元音字母前的词中,比如 guard 和 guarantee。

That French spelling was sometimes extended to other words where the g sound appeared before the other vowel letters, like guard and guarantee.

Speaker 0

在荷兰语中,抄写员采用了一种不同的方式来表示硬 g 音。

In Dutch, scribes had a different way of indicating the hard g sound.

Speaker 0

他们会在 g 后面加上 h,从而形成 gh 拼写。

They would add an h after the g, and the result was a g h spelling.

Speaker 0

这种拼写方式也通过少数几个词进入了英语,具体包括 ghost、ghastly、aghast 和 gherkin。

That spelling also made its way to English in a few words, specifically ghost, ghastly, aghast, and gherkin.

Speaker 0

这些词使用这种荷兰拼写的原因与印刷机的历史有关。

The reason why this Dutch spelling is used in those words is because of the history of the printing press.

Speaker 0

荷兰人比英国人更早开始使用印刷机。

The Dutch began using the printing press before the English did.

Speaker 0

事实上,第一台英文印刷机是从荷兰引进的,一些荷兰助手和排字工人也随之一同前来。

In fact, the first English printing press was brought over from The Netherlands, and some of the Dutch assistants and typesetters came with it.

Speaker 0

这使得一些荷兰拼写惯例得以进入英语。

And that allows some of those Dutch spelling conventions to pass into English.

Speaker 0

意大利语也使用相同的gh字母组合来表示硬g音。

Italian also used the same g h letter combination to represent the hard g sound.

Speaker 0

这种意大利拼写方式出现在ghetto这样的词中,以及spaghetti的中间部分。

That Italian spelling is found in words like ghetto and in the middle of spaghetti.

Speaker 0

所以,总结来说,英语中有许多不同的方式来表示g音,而具体的拼写往往揭示了这个词的历史,包括它的来源。

So the bottom line here is that we have a lot of different ways of representing the g sound in English, and the particular spelling often tells us about the history of the word, including where it came from.

Speaker 0

因此,表示g音的方式有很多。

So that's a lot of different ways of representing the g sound.

Speaker 0

但有时,单词中的g是完全不发音的。

But sometimes, we have a g in words that isn't pronounced at all.

Speaker 0

特别是在gnaw和gnat这类词开头的g,这种情况尤为常见。

That's especially true for the g at the front of words like gnaw and gnat.

Speaker 0

在这些词中,g 曾经发音为 ganao 或 gnat。

In those words, the g was once pronounced as ganao or gnat.

Speaker 0

这些都是古英语词汇。

Those are Old English words.

古英语中有些词开头就有这个音,就像许多以 k n 开头的词(如 knife、knee 和 knot)中保留了原始发音一样。

Old English had that initial sound in some words, just like it had the original sound preserved in so many words that begin with k n, like knife and knee and knot.

Speaker 0

在15世纪初,这种发音似乎仍在保守的受过教育的口语中残留,因此被保留在这些词的永久拼写中。

Those pronunciations were apparently still lingering in conservative educated speech in the early fifteen hundreds, enough that it was retained in the permanent spelling of those words.

Speaker 0

但到了我们故事中的16世纪初,这些以 g n 拼写的词中的 g 音已经消失了。

But by the current point in our story in the early sixteen hundreds, the g sound in those words spelled with g n was gone.

Speaker 0

16世纪初的拼写改革者没有提供任何证据表明这些词开头的 g 音当时仍在发音。

The spelling reformers of the early sixteen hundreds provide no evidence that the g sound at the front of those words was still being pronounced at the time.

Speaker 0

刚才我提到了 ghost 和 ghetto 等词中的 g h 拼写,并指出当 g h 组合用于表示硬 g 音时,它代表的是从英语之外借来的拼写方式。

Now a moment ago, I mentioned the g h spelling in words like ghost and ghetto, and I noted that when the g h combination is used to represent the hard g sound, it represents a spelling that was borrowed from outside of English.

Speaker 0

但我们也有很多词中的 g h 拼写根本不发音。

But we also have a lot of words where the g h spelling doesn't represent any sound at all.

Speaker 0

这些词中的gh是不发音的。

The g h in those words is silent.

Speaker 0

像light、night、high、thought、though和eight这样的词就是这种情况。

That's the case in words like light, night, high, thought, though, and ate, e I g h t.

Speaker 0

这种不发音的gh与ghost和ghetto中的gh有着完全不同的历史。

Now this silent g h has a completely different history from the g h in ghost and ghetto.

Speaker 0

事实上,这种不发音的gh是英语本土的。

And in fact, this silent g h is native to English.

Speaker 0

这种特定的gh拼写在中古英语时期出现,用来表示当时英语中仍常见的发音。

This particular g h spelling emerged in Middle English to represent the sound, which was still common in English at the time.

Speaker 0

这种发音自古英语时期甚至更早就已经存在。

It had been around since old English and really before that.

Speaker 0

因此,night这个词原本发音更像……,though这个词原本发音更像……。

So the word night was originally pronounced more like, the word though was originally pronounced more like.

Speaker 0

至少在15世纪,这种发音仍在一定程度上被使用,这就是为什么它至今仍保留在许多单词的标准拼写中。

That sound was still being pronounced at least to a certain extent in the fifteen hundreds, which is why it remains in the standard spelling of so many words today.

Speaker 0

但当然,这个音在近代早期逐渐消失了,尽管在苏格兰和一些其他地方方言中仍有所保留。

But, of course, that sound gradually disappeared in the early modern era, though it survives to an extent in Scotland and a few other regional dialects.

Speaker 0

那么问题来了,这个音是什么时候消失的?在我们整个故事的当前阶段——即17世纪初——它是否还存在?

The question then is when did that sound disappear, and was it still around at the current point in our overall story in the early sixteen hundreds?

Speaker 0

答案是,它在一些人的口语中仍有所残留,尽管到那时大部分已经消失了。

Well, the answer is that it still lingered in some people's speech, although it was mostly gone by that point.

Speaker 0

大多数早期的拼写改革者仍在他们的音标字母中用特定字母标记这个音。

Most of the early spelling reformers still marked the sound with a specific letter in their phonetic alphabet.

Speaker 0

在16世纪末,拼写改革者埃德蒙·库特写道,这个音‘几乎不发音’,他还指出,有些人发这个音,有些人则不发。

At the very end of the fifteen hundreds, a spelling reformer named Edmund Coote wrote that the sound was, quote, little sounded, and he also noted that some people pronounced it and some people didn't.

Speaker 0

即使在我们故事的当前阶段——1619年——我们也发现了相互矛盾的证据。

Even at the current point in our overall story in 1619, we find conflicting evidence.

Speaker 0

亚历山大·吉尔在他的音标拼写中包含了这个音,但同时期的罗伯特·罗宾逊却完全未表示这个音。

Alexander Gill included the sound in his phonetic spellings, but Robert Robinson, writing around the same time, didn't represent the sound at all.

Speaker 0

正如我们所见,吉尔在音标拼写上倾向于保守,反映的是一种更传统、更受教育的发音方式。

As we've seen, Gil tended to be a bit conservative in his phonetic spellings, reflecting a more traditional and educated form of speech.

Speaker 0

而罗宾逊则更倾向于现代,反映了当时正在兴起并最终成为标准发音的语音。

Whereas Robinson tended to be a bit more modern, reflecting the speech that was emerging at the time and would go on to become the standard pronunciations.

Speaker 0

吉尔实际上是最后几位仍标记该发音的作家之一。

Gill is actually one of the last writers to indicate that the sound was still being pronounced.

Speaker 0

从那以后,如果再提及这个发音,它就会被称为旧式发音。

After that point, if it's mentioned at all, it's referred to as the old pronunciation.

Speaker 0

所以,如果你在1619年的伦敦街头行走,你会听到大多数人像今天一样发音‘though’这个词。

So if you were walking around London in 1619, you would have heard most people saying the word though like we do today.

Speaker 0

但偶尔,你也会听到一些年长者和受过更好教育的人仍然这样发音,他们是我们在标准英语中所知的最后一批这样发音的人。

But occasionally, you would have heard some older and some more educated speakers still saying, but they were some of the last speakers to pronounce it that way in what we would call standard English.

Speaker 0

这就是今天拼写中‘gh’不发音的由来。

So that's the story behind the g h spelling that's silent today.

Speaker 0

但那‘gh’拼写发/f/音的情况又如何呢?

But what about the g h spelling that's pronounced as an f sound?

Speaker 0

之前我们看到,像‘phone’和‘philosophy’这样的词中,用‘ph’来表示这个音,这种拼写源自希腊语,通常用于希腊语借词。

Earlier, we saw that the p h spelling is used for that sound in words like phone and philosophy, and that's a spelling that came from Greek and is generally used in Greek loan words.

Speaker 0

但像 laugh、cough 和 enough 这样以 gh 结尾的单词呢?

But what about the g h spelling at the end of words like laugh and cough and enough?

Speaker 0

在那里,gh 的拼写代表 f 的发音。

There, the g h spelling represents the f sound.

Speaker 0

那这里发生了什么?

So what's going on there?

Speaker 0

嗯,这同样是中古英语中用来表示该音的 gh。

Well, again, this is the same g h that was used to represent the sound in Middle English.

Speaker 0

但当这个音出现在词尾时,有时会变成 f 音,一种 f 音,而这一变化在17世纪初仍在进行中。

But where that sound occurred at the end of a word, it sometimes became an f sound, a f sound, and that change was still underway in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

所以在中古英语中,像 laugh 这样的词会被发音为 这个词,以及大多数在词尾出现 f 音的词,都带有一个双唇圆唇的元音。

So in Middle English, a word like laugh would have been pronounced This word and most other words where the f sound emerged at the end had a vowel sound that was pronounced with rounded lips.

Speaker 0

当用圆唇发音元音时,下唇往往会更靠近上齿。

Well, when rounding the lips to make the vowel sound, it tends to bring the lower lip closer to the top teeth.

Speaker 0

在这种环境下,它非常接近 f 音。

And in that environment, it's very close to an f sound.

Speaker 0

当人们不再发音这个圆唇元音后的音时,有些人似乎选择用f音来替代,因为在这个环境中f音很容易发出。

And as people stopped pronouncing the sound after that rounded vowel, some people apparently chose to substitute an f sound in its place, which could be easily produced in that environment.

Speaker 0

所以它从...演变成了...。同样,在17世纪初,有些人会发这个f音,而有些人则不会。

So it evolved from to Now, again, in the early sixteen hundreds, some people would have pronounced that f sound and some wouldn't.

Speaker 0

来自那些拼写改革者的现存证据证实,当时f音的发音是不稳定的。

And the surviving evidence from those spelling reformers confirms that the pronunciation of the f sound was variable at the time.

Speaker 0

大多数拼写改革者指出,单词laugh仍然按传统方式发音为...,但托马斯·史密斯爵士在1568年的著作中记录了laugh的另一种发音。

Most of the spelling reformers indicate that the word laugh was still pronounced in the traditional way as, But sir Thomas Smith, writing in 1568, recorded laugh as an alternate pronunciation.

Speaker 0

所以我们知道,到那时这种发音已经出现了。

So we know it was around by then.

Speaker 0

莎士比亚的诗歌和戏剧证实了词尾的f音,因为他将laugh与其他以f音结尾的词押韵。

Shakespeare's poems and plays confirm the f sound at the end because he rhymed the word laugh with other words that ended in f.

Speaker 0

因此,他也使用了这种新兴的f音发音。

So he also had the emerging f pronunciation.

Speaker 0

亚历山大·吉尔在我们整个故事的这个时间点——1619年——仍使用了传统的发音方式。

Alexander Gill, writing at the current point in our overall story in 1619, used the older traditional pronunciation.

Speaker 0

但他表示,带有f音的laugh也能听到,并且他特别指出这是来自英格兰北部说话者的发音。

But he said that laugh with the f sound could also be heard, and he specifically attributed it to speakers from the North Of England.

Speaker 0

到了1630年代,f发音似乎已成为这个词的正常发音。

By the sixteen thirties, it appears that the f pronunciation was the normal pronunciation of the word.

Speaker 0

单词enough似乎比laugh更早获得了f音,因为吉尔和罗宾逊都在同一时期记录到,enough的结尾发音为f音。

The word enough apparently had acquired its f sound a little before laugh did, because Gil and Robinson, both writing around the same time, record that enough was pronounced with an f sound at the end.

Speaker 0

所以,尽管吉尔没有在laugh中使用f音,但他确实在enough中使用了。

So even though Gil didn't use the f for laugh, he did use it for enough.

Speaker 0

但他承认enough的发音存在差异。

But he acknowledged that the pronunciation of enough varied.

Speaker 0

他说有些人仍使用旧的发音方式。

He said that some people used the older pronunciation.

Speaker 0

再次强调,这里的主要观点是,现代发音在17世纪初已经开始出现,但尚未普及。

Again, the main point here is that the modern pronunciations were emerging in the early sixteen hundreds, but they were not universal yet.

Speaker 0

在探讨了gh拼写之后,我想现在是时候从字母g转向字母h了,也就是字母表中的下一个字母。

So having explored the g h spelling, I suppose it's a good time to move on from letter g to letter h, the next letter in the alphabet.

Speaker 0

字母 h 代表一种非常轻柔、发音微弱的声音。

The letter h represents a very soft and lightly pronounced sound.

Speaker 0

它只是在另一个音之前的一丝气息或呼气。

It's little more than a slight breath or aspiration before another sound.

Speaker 0

由于这种声音非常轻,它在历史发展中容易消失,尤其是在词首位置。

And since it is such a light sound, it's had a tendency to disappear over time, especially at the front of words.

Speaker 0

这种音在古英语中很常见,我们至今仍保留许多以字母 h 开头的古英语单词,比如 hand(手)、hair(头发)、head(头)、house(房子)、high(高)、hot(热)和 hound(猎犬)。

The sound was common in Old English, and we still have many Old English words that begin with letter h, like hand, hair, head, house, high, hot, and hound.

Speaker 0

如果不是诺曼征服,字母 h 在英语中的历史可能会简单而直接。

And were it not for the Norman Conquest, the history of letter h in English would probably be simple and straightforward.

Speaker 0

但正如我们所见,征服对英语拼写造成了巨大混乱,法语的拼写和发音渗透进英语,使情况变得复杂。

But, of course, as we've seen, the conquest wreaked havoc on English spelling as French spellings and pronunciations infiltrated English and tended to complicate things.

Speaker 0

就字母 h 而言,主要问题是,在晚期拉丁语和早期法语中,这个词首的 h 音已经变为无声。

With respect to letter h, the main problem is that the sound of the letter had become silent at the front of words in late Latin and early French.

Speaker 0

因此,随着大量法语借词涌入英语,我们获得了许多词首 h 不发音的单词,其中一些至今仍保留这种无声 h,比如 honor(荣誉)、honest(诚实)、hour(小时)、h o u r 和 heir(继承人)、h e I r。

So as all of the French loan words poured into English, we acquired a lot of words with a silent h at the front, some of which have retained that silent h, like honor, honest, hour, h o u r, and heir, h e I r.

Speaker 0

因此,在中古英语时期,随着大量带有无声h的法语词涌入,英语中形成了两类词:一类是本土词,其词首的h是发音的;另一类是法语词,其词首的h不发音。

So in Middle English, as all of those French words with their silent h's poured in, it left English with a group of native words where the initial h was pronounced and a group of French words where it wasn't.

Speaker 0

当时一些抄写员在拼写这些法语词时,会直接省略h,因为h并不发音。

Now when some scribes spelled those French words, they would just omit the h since it wasn't pronounced.

Speaker 0

但正如我们所见,中古英语晚期出现了一种趋势,即强调单词的原始拼写,以反映其词源和原始发音,甚至到了在英语中从未发音的拉丁字母也强行添加的地步。

But as we've seen, there was an effort in late Middle English to emphasize the original spelling of words to reflect their etymology and original pronunciations, even to the point of inserting letters used in Latin that were never pronounced in English.

Speaker 0

结果,大多数这些法语词最终都恢复了原本词首的h拼写,尽管h仍然是无声的。

And as a result, most of those French words came to be spelled with their original h's at the front, even though the h was silent.

Speaker 0

随着印刷术的推广,识字率不断提高,人们在许多词的词首都见到了h,但他们不确定是否应该发音。

As literacy spread with the printing press, people encountered those h's at the front of many words, and they weren't sure if they were supposed to pronounce them or not.

Speaker 0

他们并不一定知道这些词的来源,因此无法判断h是否应该沉默。

They didn't necessarily know where the word came from, so they couldn't tell if the h was silent.

Speaker 0

这造成了大量混淆:有些人会在本应无声的法语词中发音h,却在本应发音的英语本土词中省略了h。

That created a lot of confusion where some people pronounced the h in French words where it was supposed to be silent, and they didn't pronounce the h in native English words where it was supposed to be pronounced.

Speaker 0

这基本上就是我们整个故事当前阶段——17世纪初——的情况。

That was basically the state of things at the current point in our overall story in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

所以有些人会说 'house',有些人则会说 'ouse'。

So some people would have said house, and some people would have said house.

Speaker 0

有些人会说 'honor',有些人则会说 'onor'。

Some people would have said honor, and some people would have said honor.

Speaker 0

有些人会说 'herb',有些人则会说 'erb'。

And some people would have said herb, and some people would have said herb.

Speaker 0

几十年前,约翰·哈特在大多数情况下将 'honor' 一词拼写为不带 h 的形式,反映了该词源自法语、h 不发音的传统读法。

Several decades earlier, John Hart had transcribed the word honor without an h on most occasions, reflecting the traditional French pronunciation of the word with a silent h.

Speaker 0

但有几次,他不小心加上了 h。

But on a couple of occasions, he slipped and included the h.

Speaker 0

由此可见,即使是他也难免出现不一致的情况。

So apparently, even he was prone to variation.

Speaker 0

在我们故事的这个时间点,即1619年,亚历山大·吉尔强烈反对将 'honor' 和 'honest' 这类词拼写为带 h 的形式,因为 h 从来都不发音。

At the current point in our story in 1619, Alexander Gill wrote that he strongly objected to writing words like honor and honest with an h because the h was never pronounced.

Speaker 0

有趣的是,在同一段文字中,他不仅举了 'honor' 和 'honest' 的例子。

Interestingly, in that same passage, he didn't just give the examples of honor and honest.

Speaker 0

他还提到了单词 'over',说它根本不应该拼写成带 h 的形式。

He also included the word over, which he said shouldn't ever be spelled with an h either.

Speaker 0

这看起来可能有点奇怪,因为这是一个地道的英语单词,而我们今天并不用 h 来拼写它。

Now that may seem like an odd inclusion because it's a native English word, and we don't spell it with an h today.

Speaker 0

但在当时,有些人确实会用 h 来拼写它,因为他们认为它属于那些法语词,h 已经从拼写中被省略了。

But at the time, some people did spell it with an h because they thought it was one of those French words where the h had been dropped from the spelling.

Speaker 0

由于作家们偶尔会用 h 来拼写它,一些人就开始把它读作 'hover'。

Since writers occasionally spelled it with an h, some people started pronouncing it as hover.

Speaker 0

语言学家称之为过度矫正,即人们过度纠正,改变了本来不该改变的东西。

Linguists call that a hyper correction, where people basically overcorrect and change something that shouldn't have been changed.

Speaker 0

所以在17世纪初,存在一种复杂的混合状态:h 有时发音,有时不发音。

So in the early sixteen hundreds, there was a complicated mix where the h was sometimes pronounced and sometimes it wasn't.

Speaker 0

有时甚至会给原本没有 h 的单词加上 h。

And sometimes an h was even added to words that never had one.

Speaker 0

但随着时间推移,拼写开始引导发音。

But as time passed, the spellings started to guide the pronunciation.

Speaker 0

由于作家和印刷商在大多数这些法语借词中加入了h,人们在看到这些词的书写形式时总是遇到带h的拼写。

Since writers and printers had inserted the h in most of those French loan words, people always encountered those words with an h when they saw them written down.

Speaker 0

因此,在大多数情况下,人们认为正确的发音应该包含h音。

So in most cases, people assumed that the correct pronunciation was with the h.

Speaker 0

于是,几个世纪以来,人们越来越普遍地在拼写中有h的单词开头发出h音。

So it became increasingly common over the centuries for people to pronounce the h at the front of words that were spelled with an h.

Speaker 0

像habit、host、hotel、hospital、history、hero和horrible这样的法语词,都因为拼写中有h而获得了开头的h音,尽管在法语中这些h原本是不发音的。

French words like habit, host, hotel, hospital, history, hero, and horrible, all acquired an h sound at the front because that's the way they were spelled, even though the h's had been silent in French.

Speaker 0

实际上只有少数几个例外,比如honor、honest、hour(拼写为h-o-u-r)、air(拼写为h-e-i-r),以及美式英语中的herb。

There were really only a handful of exceptions, honor, honest, hour, h o u r, and air, h e I r, and herb in American English.

Speaker 0

但在英式英语中,herb这个词和其他大多数法语词一样,也增加了开头的h音,从而变成了herb。

But in British English, the word herb followed along with most of those other French words and also picked up an initial h sound, thereby becoming herb.

Speaker 0

我应该指出,15世纪和16世纪的一些人倾向于从不发任何单词开头的h音,无论这些词源自何处。

I should note that some people in the fifteen hundreds and sixteen hundreds had a tendency to never pronounce the h sound at the front of words, regardless of where they came from.

Speaker 0

他们只是假设所有开头的h都是不发音的,即使是像house这样的本族词,也变成了ouse,hello变成了ello。

They just assumed that all initial h's were silent, even in native words like house, which became house, and hello, which became ello.

Speaker 0

这种发音尤其与伦敦工人阶级和下层阶级的说话者相关,最终变得高度污名化。

That type of pronunciation was especially associated with working class and lower class speakers in London, and it eventually became highly stigmatized.

Speaker 0

当然,英国比北美更加注重阶级差异,因此在英国这种发音带有阶级含义,而在北美则没有。

Of course, England was much more class conscious than North America, so it had class connotations in England that it didn't have in North America.

Speaker 0

因此,在18世纪和19世纪的英国,人们大力推动人们重新发h音。

As a result, there was a concerted effort in England in the eighteen hundreds and nineteen hundreds to get people to pronounce their h's again.

Speaker 0

我们将在未来的节目中探讨这一努力,但当然,这些不发h音的方言在英国部分地区仍然存在。

We'll look at that effort in a future episode, but, of course, those h list dialects still persist in parts of England.

Speaker 0

现在,让我们通过快速回顾字母I和J来结束本集,因为它们实际上是相互关联的。

Now let's wrap up this episode by taking a quick look at letters I and j because they are actually related to each other.

Speaker 0

当然,字母I是另一个元音字母,和我们之前考察过的其他元音字母一样,它也有所谓的短音和长音。

Of course, the letter I is another vowel letter, and like the other vowel letters we've examined, it has so called short and long sounds.

Speaker 0

短音是I,出现在bit、hid、slip和digit等词中。

The short sound is I, the sound heard in words like bit, hid, slip, and digit.

Speaker 0

这是字母的传统短音,在英语历史中几乎没有发生太大变化。

That's the traditional short sound of the letter, and it hasn't really changed much over the history of English.

Speaker 0

现在,I的长音随着时间发生了变化,因为所有的长元音都随着大元音 Shift 发生了变化。

Now the long sound of I has changed over time because, like all of the long vowel sounds, it was changed as part of the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

如今,这个长音是 I,比如在 ice、fine、wide、dime 等词中。

Today, that long sound is I, as in ice, fine, wide, dime, and so on.

Speaker 0

同样,这是在大元音 Shift 期间出现的音。

Again, that's the sound that emerged during the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

但字母 I 原来的长音实际上是 e。

But the original long sound of letter I was actually e.

Speaker 0

在大多数其他欧洲语言中,这仍然是字母的发音。

That's still the sound of the letter in most other European languages.

Speaker 0

当然,在大元音 Shift 之后的几个世纪里,许多从其他语言借来的词中保留了这种发音。

And of course, we have that pronunciation in a lot of words that have been borrowed from other languages in recent centuries after the great vowel shift.

Speaker 0

这些较新的外来词包括 elite、police、piano、pizza 等。

Some of those newer loan words include elite, police, piano, pizza, and so on.

Speaker 0

同样,这是字母 I 原来的发音。

Again, that's the original sound of letter I.

Speaker 0

在英语中,这个音从e转变为I,但中间经历了一个类似于a的阶段。

Within English, this sound shifted from e to I, but there was an intermediate stage where it was something like a.

Speaker 0

所以它经历了从e到a再到I的变化。

So it went from e to a to I.

Speaker 0

对于像'time'这样的词,其演变过程可能是:team → time → time。

For a word like time, the evolution would have been team, time, time.

Speaker 0

在我们故事当前的时间点——17世纪初,这个元音很可能正处于a这个中间阶段。

At the current point in our overall story in the early sixteen hundreds, the vowel sound was probably at that middle stage as a.

Speaker 0

因此,如果你当时走在伦敦街头,可能会听到大多数人把'time'、'ice'、'wine'读成那样。

So if you were walking around London, you would have probably heard most people say time, ice, wine.

Speaker 0

但你或许也会听到少数人使用现代的发音,如'time'、'ice'和'wine'。

But you might have heard a few people using the modern pronunciations as time, ice, and wine.

Speaker 0

在当时,这种发音被视为非标准,但到了17和18世纪,它逐渐成为主流。

That would have been considered nonstandard at the time, but it gradually became the norm over the course of the sixteen hundreds and seventeen hundreds.

Speaker 0

这样一来,我们就谈到了字母j。

So that leaves us with the letter j.

Speaker 0

正如我刚才提到的,它与字母I密切相关。

And as I noted a moment ago, it's closely related to letter I.

Speaker 0

事实上,它其实就是字母I的一种变体。

In fact, it's really just a variation of letter I.

Speaker 0

它基本上就是I,只是在底部加了一点装饰或小尾巴。

It's basically I with a little flourish or a little tail at the bottom.

Speaker 0

但在我们讲述的英语发展当前阶段,它还不存在。

And at the current point in our overall story of English, it didn't exist yet.

Speaker 0

在1619年,作为独立字母表示/j/音的字母J还不存在,但它即将首次作为独立字母出现。

Letter j as a distinct letter for the j sound didn't exist in 1619, but it was about to make its first appearance as its own letter.

Speaker 0

在亚历山大·吉尔撰写关于拼写改革和英语发音的著作大约十年后,字母J开始被用作独立字母,我将在后续节目中详细讨论这一发展。

About a decade after Alexander Gill wrote his book on spelling reform and English pronunciation, the letter j started to be used as a distinct letter, and I'll deal with that development in an upcoming episode.

Speaker 0

但如果字母J还不存在,人们当时是如何拼写/j/音的呢?

But if letter j didn't exist yet, how did people spell the j sound?

Speaker 0

实际上有三种不同的拼写方式,因为这个音在英语中有三个不同的来源,每个来源都由不同的拼写形式表示。

Well, there were actually three different ways because the sound has three different sources in English, and each source is represented by a different spelling.

Speaker 0

首先,这个音在拉丁语中并不存在。

First of all, the sound didn't exist in Latin.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么拉丁字母表没有专门表示这个音的字母。

That's why the Latin alphabet didn't have a specific letter for the sound.

Speaker 0

这个音在古英语中也很罕见,但有时会出现在词尾,比如‘edge’和‘bridge’这样的词。

The sound was also rare in Old English, but it did sometimes appear at the end of a word, like the words edge and bridge.

Speaker 0

由于拉丁语中没有表示这个音的字母,古英语的抄写员不得不发明一种方式来表示这个音。

Since there was no Latin letter for the sound, old English scribes had to invent a way to represent the sound.

Speaker 0

他们通常使用字母g的某种形式,有时是双g,有时是c和g的组合,有时还会创造其他变体。

They usually used some form of letter g, sometimes a double g, sometimes a c g letter combination, and sometimes they came up with other variations.

Speaker 0

这种不确定性在中古英语中演变为dg的拼写,成为我们现代英语中如edge、bridge、ledge等词里dg e拼写的前身。

That uncertainty evolved into a d g spelling in Middle English, which was the precursor of our modern d g e spelling in words like edge, bridge, ledge, and so on.

Speaker 0

所有这些演变都源于试图为少数英语单词的词尾找到一种表示该音的方法。

Again, all of that evolved out of an attempt to find a way to represent that sound at the end of a handful of English words.

Speaker 0

但请记住,在古英语中,这个音几乎只出现在这种语境中。

But remember that the sound didn't really appear outside of that context in old English.

Speaker 0

当时这种音很少见。

It was rare at the time.

Speaker 0

但诺曼征服之后,法语词汇开始大量涌入英语,其中不少词确实含有这个音,因为这个音在早期法语中已经出现。

But after the Norman conquest, French words started to pour into English, and quite a few of those words did have that sound because that sound had emerged in early French.

Speaker 0

它通过两种独立且无关的语音变化而出现。

And it emerged through two separate and unrelated sound changes.

Speaker 0

我们已经讨论过其中一种,就是像gentle和giant这样的词中软化的g音。

We've already looked at one of those, which is the soft g sound in words like gentle and giant.

Speaker 0

正如我们所见,法语中的硬g音在某些词中软化成了j音。

As we saw, the hard g sound was softened in French and became a j sound in certain words.

Speaker 0

因此,在这些词中,字母g被用来表示这个j音,这种拼写方式也传入了英语。

So in those words, the letter g was used to represent that j sound and that spelling passed into English.

Speaker 0

但这并不是早期法语中这个音出现的唯一情况。

But that wasn't the only time that the sound emerged in early French.

显然,早期的法语使用者非常喜欢这个音,因为它还在另一组词中出现了。

Apparently, those early French speakers really liked that sound because it also emerged in another set of words.

Speaker 0

这就让我们回到了字母 I,因为正是这个字母的发音产生了另一种 j 音,而我们的字母 j 正是源于此。

And that brings us back to letter I because it was the sound of that letter that produced this other j sound, and that's really where our letter j comes from.

Speaker 0

正如我在之前的节目中提到的,在拉丁语中,字母 I 的元音在出现在另一个元音前时往往会有所变化。

As I've noted in prior episodes, in Latin, the vowel sound of letter I tended to change a bit when it appeared before another vowel.

Speaker 0

具体来说,它往往会变成 y 音,也就是 y。

Specifically, it tended to become a y sound, y.

Speaker 0

这种变化是自然发生的,今天我们英语中在像 Olivia 或 Lydia 这样的名字末尾也会这样做,有时会读作 Olivia 或 Lydia。

This happens naturally, and we do the same thing today in English at the end of a name like Olivia or Lydia, which is sometimes pronounced as Olivia or Lydia.

Speaker 0

同样,这个小小的 y 音会在字母 I 和另一个元音之间自然融合,这在晚期拉丁语和早期法语的许多单词中都发生了。

Again, that little y sound naturally merges between letter I and another vowel, and that's what happened in a lot of words in late Latin and early French.

Speaker 0

但随后,在某些单词中,这个音继续演变。

But then the sound continued to evolve in some words.

Speaker 0

事实上,这个音在西欧各地演变成了不同的发音。

In fact, the sound evolved into different sounds throughout Western Europe.

Speaker 0

但在法语中,它逐渐在许多单词中变成了 j 音。

But in French, it gradually became a j sound in many words.

Speaker 0

在之前的节目中,我谈到了尤利乌斯这个名字,比如尤利乌斯·凯撒。

In prior episodes, I talked about the name Julius, as in Julius Caesar.

Speaker 0

你可能注意到,这个名字在拉丁语中常写作 I u l I u s,这是因为这是该名字的原始拼写,反映了其原本的发音 Iulius。

You may have noticed that the name is often written with an I in Latin as I u l I u s, and that's because that was the original spelling of the name, which reflects its original pronunciation as Iulius.

Speaker 0

但后来它演变为带有 y 音的 Julius,而在法语中,它进一步演变为带有 j 音的 Julius。

But then it became Julius with a y sound, and then in French, it continued to evolve into Julius with the j sound.

Speaker 0

这种变化发生在许多进入英语的单词中,比如 Jupiter、January、jelly、joke、juggle、just、justice、jury 等等。

And that happened in a lot of words that passed into English, like Jupiter, January, jelly, joke, juggle, just, justice, jury, and so on.

Speaker 0

但在中古英语时期,直到我们故事当前时间点——17世纪初,这些单词仍然一直用 I 拼写。

But those words were still spelled with an I throughout the Middle English period and all the way up to the current point in our story in the early sixteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

但正如我之前提到的,字母 I 对中世纪抄写员来说是个问题,因为在当时使用的方正字体中,它在单词中间容易被忽略。

But as I've noted before, the letter I was a problem for medieval scribes because in the blocky script that was used at the time, it tended to get lost in the middle of a word.

Speaker 0

因此,抄写员们寻找各种方法让这个字母更醒目。

So scribes look for ways to make it stand out.

Speaker 0

有时,他们会在这个字母上方加一个小点,这种做法最终成为小写字母 i 的通用规范。

Sometimes, they would put a little dot above it, a technique which eventually became common for the lowercase version of the letter.

Speaker 0

有时,他们会给字母加一个小小的装饰或底部的尾笔,使其在基线以下更加突出。

And sometimes, they would give the letter a little flourish or tail at the bottom to make it stand out below the line.

Speaker 0

在14世纪和15世纪,西欧部分地区的一些抄写员开始使用带小装饰或尾笔的I来区分字母的两种不同发音。

Well, in the fourteen hundreds and fifteen hundreds, scribes in parts of Western Europe started using the I with the little flourish or tail to distinguish the two different sounds of the letter.

Speaker 0

元音发音使用传统的直线型字母,而辅音发音则使用带底部小装饰的版本。

The vowel sound was represented with the traditional straight version of the letter, and the consonant sound was represented with the version with the little flourish at the bottom.

Speaker 0

这种技巧显然最早出现在14世纪的西班牙。

This technique was apparently first used in Spain in the fourteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

在西班牙,这个音演变成了h音或类似h的音。

In Spain, that sound had evolved into an h sound or a sound.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么英文中看起来像Jesus的名字,在西班牙语中实际发音为Jesus,但拼写却用了j,尽管发音不同。

That's why the name that looks like Jesus in English is actually pronounced as Jesus in Spanish, but it's also spelled with a j despite the difference in pronunciation.

Speaker 0

与此同时,在欧洲的日耳曼地区,同样的带小装饰的I被用于表示最初由字母I演变而来的y音。

Meanwhile, in the Germanic parts of Europe, the same I with the little flourish was applied to the y sound that initially merged from letter I.

Speaker 0

这就是为什么英文中看起来像Jan的名字,在那些地区发音为Jan,但拼写却用了j。

That's why the name that looks like Jan in English is pronounced as Jan in those regions and is also spelled with a j.

Speaker 0

法国抄写员也采用了这种用花体I来表示法语中由字母I演变出的音的方法。

French scribes also picked up the idea of using that fancy version of letter I to represent the sound that had emerged from the letter in French.

Speaker 0

到了16世纪末,英语拼写改革者约翰·哈特建议英语也采用同样的做法。

And by the late fifteen hundreds, the English spelling reformer John Hart was recommending that English take the same approach.

Speaker 0

但当时没有任何证据表明有人采纳了他的建议。

But there's no evidence that anyone took him up on the suggestion at the time.

Speaker 0

正如我在讲述1619年英语整体发展历程时所指出的,当时英格兰的作家和印刷商仍在用字母I来表示所有这些法语借词中的/j/音。

As I noted at the current point in our overall story of English in 1619, writers and printers in England were still using letter I to represent the j sound in all of those French loan words.

Speaker 0

然而,再过十年左右,这种带小尾饰的花体I开始在英语中专门用于这些词中的/j/音。

However, in another decade or so, the fancy I with the little flourish started to be applied exclusively to that sound in those words in English.

Speaker 0

这种花体I逐渐被认定为一个独立且独特的字母。

And that fancy I gradually came to be recognized as a separate and distinct letter.

Speaker 0

但这花费了很长时间。

However, it took a long time.

Speaker 0

直到18世纪后期,像just、jury和judicial这样的词,在许多英语词典中仍被列在字母I下,即使它们如今是用我们称为J的字母拼写的。

Well into the seventeen hundreds, words like just and jury and judicial were still being listed under letter I in many English dictionaries, even when they were spelled with that letter we call j today.

Speaker 0

看着列在I下面的单词,发现有些以I开头,有些以j开头,却全都混在一起,这看起来很奇怪。

It's strange to look at the words listed under I and see that some of them begin with an I and some of them begin with a j, all listed together.

Speaker 0

但同样地,人们仍然认为它们只是同一个字母的两种不同写法。

But again, people still thought of them as two different ways of writing the same letter.

Speaker 0

到了十九世纪,将那些用花体I拼写的、发j音的单词分离开来才变得普遍。

In the eighteen hundreds, it finally became common to separate the words with the j sound that were spelled with the fancy I.

Speaker 0

这些单词开始被单独列在使用传统直体I的单词之后。

They started to be placed separately after the words that used the traditional straight form of letter I.

Speaker 0

正是在这些单词被从词典和拼写指南中分离开来的时候,人们才接受了j作为一个独立的字母,j最终进入了字母表。

And it was really at that point when those words were separated in the dictionaries and spelling guides that people accepted the letter j as a distinct letter, and j finally made its way into the alphabet.

Speaker 0

因此,总结来说,这些发展让我们有了三种不同的方式来表示英语中的j音。

So in summary, those developments left us with three different ways to represent the j sound in English.

Speaker 0

一种是在单词末尾使用dg e,比如edge、ledge和bridge。

There is d g e at the end of words, like edge, ledge, and bridge.

Speaker 0

还有一种是软g,主要用于表示源自法语借词中的这个音。

And there's the soft g used to represent the sound mainly found in French loan words.

Speaker 0

最后,还有字母 j,它本质上只是一个在底部带有个装饰的花体 I,主要用于法语借词中,表示在法语某些情况下由字母 I 演变而来的音。

And finally, there's letter j, which is ultimately just a fancy I with a flourish at the bottom, and is mainly used in French loan words to represent a sound that evolved out of letter I in certain situations in French.

Speaker 0

当然,我们也会在来自其他语言的借词中使用字母 j,比如西班牙语和德语,以反映这些地区演变出的特定发音,或字母在这些地区所对应的音。

And, of course, we also use letter j in loan words from other languages, like Spanish and German to reflect the specific sound that evolved in those regions or the sound that the letter was applied to in those regions.

Speaker 0

所以我希望以上内容都能讲清楚了,我觉得这一集就说到这里吧。

So I hope all that makes sense, and I think that's enough for this episode.

Speaker 0

下次,我们将继续探讨字母表以及它如何反映英语中较古老的发音。

Next time, we'll continue our look at the alphabet and the way it reflects older pronunciations in English.

Speaker 0

我们还会继续追踪英语在17世纪初传播到世界各地时的发音变化。

We'll also continue to keep track of the sound of English in the early sixteen hundreds as it was spreading around the world.

Speaker 0

由于这是本系列的第二部分,下一期的发布日期应该会在未来一个月内,而不是像最近那样要等两个月。

And since it will be the second part of this series, the release date for that episode should be within the next month rather than the two month wait, which has been the case recently.
