Speaker 2

What do you make of the big story today about it turns out we hardly eat any peas anymore?

Speaker 2

I'm absolutely shattered by it, I am.

Speaker 0

Oh, well, I don't wanna pee on that story, but I certainly do eat a lot of peas.

Speaker 0

My my daughter and I, we have big bags of frozen peas and sweet corn.

Speaker 0

So it's combination.

Speaker 0

It's not necessarily peas by the self, but frozen peas and sweet corn.

Speaker 0

And we have them...

Speaker 0

You know, it's always if we're having something that isn't the healthiest meal, it's like, let's have a bowl of peas and sweet corn alongside a big, you know Yeah.

Speaker 0

Proper fuller.

Speaker 0

I love peas.

Speaker 0

对。

Okay.

Speaker 0

They're one of the best green

Speaker 2

And you're bulk them in anything as well.

Speaker 0

Well, the thing is I...

Speaker 0

When I was a kid, I didn't like green veg, but the one green veg I would eat was peas.

Speaker 0

They're sort of...

Speaker 0

They don't...

Speaker 0

They're not...

Speaker 0

Now I love my broccoli and my spinach and all that, but I know you're a child.

Speaker 0

Broccoli and spinach, but peas?

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

Peas, they're the they're the peas' niche.

Speaker 2

Sorry.

Speaker 2

The, I mean, it's rich it's rich territory for pawners.

Speaker 2

I mean, David's got the best one so far, and that's not an invitation.

Speaker 0

I wish I'd write stuff like

Speaker 2

knew you'd like that.

Speaker 2

Any any other business, or shall we shall I've

Speaker 0

a I've had a really busy morning because I've just launched a very big new initiative that unfortunately due to compliance reasons because I am not actually allowed to mention on this show but I did it on five live breakfast this morning and it's absolutely everywhere and it's a really big new thing maybe people take a look at my social media or something because I can't say what it is.

Speaker 2

Does it contribute to the MartinLewis Retirement Fund?

Speaker 0

Absolutely not.

Speaker 0

In fact, it's actually the opposite.

Speaker 0

It's the opposite.

Speaker 0

£175,000.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So there we go.

Speaker 0

行。

Alright.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

你看。

Look.

Speaker 2

I'll I'll look forward to finding out more about that.

Speaker 2

Inheritance tax has been in the news this week, but explain what's been announced.

Speaker 0

Well, what's been announced is effectively the conservative policy would be that if you give your house to your main descendants, will be totally tax free and it won't come in your inheritance tax allowance and also upping the generalized limits too.

Speaker 0

So it's probably useful because I think that all sounds very good and I don't want to get engaged in the debate of whether it's good or not.

Speaker 0

You know, it all depends how you want to shift the money around, but I think inheritance tax is perhaps one of the most fundamentally misunderstood taxes out there.

Speaker 0

It applies depending on the stats to about five to 6% of estates.

Speaker 0

You could argue you might double that because many people, as I'm going to talk about in a moment, when you leave it to your spouse, it's inheritance tax free.

Speaker 0

So it's only on the second death.

Speaker 0

So you could argue that maybe 12% of estates up to 12% are actually eligible for it.

Speaker 0

And once pensions come into it, that's going to increase, you know, so probably a few more percent as well.

Speaker 0

But it is fundamentally hated as a tax.

Speaker 0

Either I suspect a combination because people don't understand it and think they'll pay it when they won't or because people have the idea what happens if I do get the money and I'll feel it's, you know, it's double taxation.

Speaker 0

And people hate double taxation, although it's absolutely all over the place.

Speaker 0

Double taxation.

Speaker 0

Whenever you go buy something in the shop, VAT, you've already paid tax on that income.

Speaker 0

You pay VAT on it...

Speaker 0

On on top of it as well.

Speaker 0

So it is a really interesting one psychologically.

Speaker 0

People hate it, the death tax.

Speaker 0

They just hate the idea of it.

Speaker 0

Of course, the reason it's there is both to raise money for the exchequer, but to stop perpetuated inherited wealth going on generation after generation.

Speaker 2

It's interesting.

Speaker 2

You get...

Speaker 2

It's the most where the avoidance of it.

Speaker 2

And I mean, that's not to imply this is illegal, the the

Speaker 0

Avoidance is legal.

Speaker 0

Evasion isn't.

Speaker 2

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 2

But the avoidance of it is sort of out in plain sight.

Speaker 2

I mean, you know, there are some of the supplements have special editions, you know, I.

Speaker 2

呃

E.

Speaker 2

How to avoid inheritance tax special.

Speaker 0

I mean, the two if I were to sum up how to avoid inheritance tax in two easy tips, spend it or give it away.

Speaker 0

If you're going to be paying inheritance tax, you want to spend it or give it away before you go.

Speaker 0

You do that.

Speaker 0

There is no inheritance tax.

Speaker 0

But let's go through.

Speaker 0

These are my five need to knows about inheritance tax.

Speaker 0

There's a lot more I's to dot and T's to cross but this is your big picture.

Speaker 0

Rule number one, anything and everything you leave to your spouse is exempt.

Speaker 0

Spouse means you must be married to them or civil partners, not cohabiting.

Speaker 0

So if you do that, even if you are Bruce Wayne and you leave £2,000,000,000 to your spouse, not a penny of inheritance taxes payable on that.

Speaker 0

First thing to remember.

Speaker 0

Second thing is the nil rate band, basically your tax free allowance is £325,000.

Speaker 0

So if your total assets, your estates, your house, everything that you own is less than £325,000, doesn't matter who you leave it to.

Speaker 0

There is no inheritance tax to be paid.

Speaker 0

Next rule, there is another allowance for your primary property.

Speaker 0

You get another allowance of up to a £175,000 just for your primary property as long as you're leaving it to direct descendants.

Speaker 0

So that step, adopted children, your own children, obviously, step adopted grandchildren, they count in that sort of lineal descent.

Speaker 0

If you leave it to them, you get another £175,000 if you're leaving them your property.

Speaker 0

So let's now take that and call it...

Speaker 0

Well, it isn't exactly if you don't have kids or lineal descent, it isn't.

Speaker 0

But many people have £500,000 including their property they can leave tax free.

Speaker 0

Let me get to the big one and the one that I think people don't realize.

Speaker 0

I think people know if you leave it to your spouse, you're fine.

Speaker 0

But what they don't know is that your spouse also gets your unused allowance.

Speaker 0

So if I were to leave or I...

Speaker 0

让……

Let...

Speaker 0

Well, that's...

Speaker 0

We've done this before.

Speaker 0

Shall we get married again?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

Let's get married again.

Speaker 0

Adrian, we're married.

Speaker 0

So we're married.

Speaker 0

We're married.

Speaker 0

We happen to have purely technically, and it's...

Speaker 0

Everything's joint because in a loving relationship like ours, why wouldn't it be?

Speaker 0

We have exactly a million pounds of assets between us because that's going to help me explain my son.

Speaker 0

I die first and you're going to be really gutted.

Speaker 0

你……

You...

Speaker 0

我会……

I'd...

Speaker 0

She could go with her away probably, I suspect.

Speaker 2

There'll be compensations, but we took out, you know, and not just financial.

Speaker 2

But anyway.

Speaker 2

Sounds cruel.

Speaker 0

Cruel.

Speaker 0

No more mastermind.

Speaker 0

So I die.

Speaker 0

I leave everything to you.

Speaker 0

You then leave everything to our imaginary children.

Speaker 0

How gorgeous that be?

Speaker 0

I mean, just very, very beautiful boys and girls that we have.

Speaker 0

So you then leave everything to them, including the house.

Speaker 0

Because you're leaving it to direct descendants, that's the 500,000.

Speaker 0

But you get my unused allowance.

Speaker 0

We've got a million pounds.

Speaker 0

You're leaving them a million pounds including the property.

Speaker 0

There's no inheritance tax to pay because between us, we get a million pounds.

Speaker 0

Now imagine the same scenario.

Speaker 0

It gets really complicated to work out, so I'm not gonna do the numbers exactly.

Speaker 0

I leave everything to you.

Speaker 0

We're not married, but we've been living together as a couple.

Speaker 0

I've just used up my £500,000 leaving it to you.

Speaker 0

Now some of that tax will be taken out of the estate, so the estate might reduce to say 900,000, not doing exact numbers.

Speaker 0

You then leave 900,000 to the kids.

Speaker 0

Well, you've only got 500,000 allowance.

Speaker 0

There's 400,000 roughly, roughly, roughly that's taxable at 40%, you know, so that's a $160 of tax.

Speaker 0

That's the impact of marriage or civil partnership compared to just cohabiting.

Speaker 0

And so that is a really, really big impact.

Speaker 0

Final rule number five is where I started.

Speaker 0

Give stuff away.

Speaker 0

Gives out of sustainable income.

Speaker 0

Any gifts out of...

Speaker 0

If you can...

Speaker 0

Out of your income, not your wealth, not your money in the bank, the income you got coming in.

Speaker 0

If you can sustainably prove that you can give somebody a gift, you want to give someone a thousand pounds a month.

Speaker 0

If you've got the money and can prove it can give it to them and you're doing it regularly, that is not in an inheritance tax because inheritance tax about gifts out of wealth.

Speaker 0

Anything you give and you live seven years afterwards is not inheritance taxable as long as it's a genuine gift.

Speaker 0

And even if you die a few years before, then the the inheritance tax is lower.

Speaker 0

You can give £3,000 exempt from inheritance tax each year as gifts.

Speaker 0

You can give £250 per person separate to the £3,000.

Speaker 0

Can't give it to same people to individuals as gifts each year, and then there are special exemptions for wedding depending on your relationship.

Speaker 0

So start with spend it below the threshold or give it away.

Speaker 0

They're the best ways to do it.

Speaker 0

But as you can see, for many married couples who've got a property and children, it's only above £1,000,000 you're looking in inheritance tax.

Speaker 0

For single people who've got a property and children, it's above 500,000.

Speaker 0

For those who don't have children and who are single, it's 325,000.

Speaker 2

Shall we move on to the big topic?

Speaker 2

确实。

Indeed.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

So And this would be, free cash.

Speaker 0

Free cash.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

So I wanted to do something on this because effectively what sparked at the moment is we've been having a bit of a war going on in the bank account market for giving you free cash to switch bank accounts.

Speaker 0

And I thought that I would expand that and talk about other types of free cash, specifically cashback credit cards and debit cards.

Speaker 0

When you spend on them, you get paid on them.

Speaker 0

And there's also a little cashback app for...

Speaker 0

If you have mobile phone bills, is quite good as well.

Speaker 0

But if we start with the three bank switches, now you've got loads of questions on this, haven't you?

Speaker 0

But I think probably it's worth just me running through the best buys to start with.

Speaker 0

One pulled last night, which is a bit of a shame.

Speaker 0

So the new one out this week is Barclays Bank account that is paying you £300 for free if you switch to it.

Speaker 0

That's a £150 at the start, then £30 a month for five months.

Speaker 0

Now interestingly, when it launched, its term said the money must be received via fax from an employer.

Speaker 0

那个……

That...

Speaker 0

What that means is it's saying you've got to pay in £2,000 a month.

Speaker 0

So it's a salary of about £29,000 going in, but it must be received via backs from an employer.

Speaker 0

Now I got back to them when I saw this and said, look.

Speaker 0

I like the offer.

Speaker 0

It's a great offer.

Speaker 0

£300.

Speaker 0

But what about the self employed?

Speaker 0

What about people on pensions?

Speaker 0

What about people who've got some benefit in income that tops them up?

Speaker 0

They got back saying, oh, we we don't mean to exclude them.

Speaker 0

And I'm like, well, you do.

Speaker 0

Your terms do.

Speaker 0

And they said, well, just tell...

Speaker 0

And I'm like, no.

Speaker 0

You gotta change your terms.

Speaker 0

They have now on...

Speaker 0

Tuesday it was.

Speaker 0

They changed the terms at 04:00.

Speaker 0

So now that does apply to most income you have.

Speaker 0

You can get Barclays at three hundred quid.

Speaker 0

That's its main perk.

Speaker 0

Next, you've got HSBC.

Speaker 0

And remember, you have to be new to these banks effectively.

Speaker 0

They've all got slightly different eligibility rules to switch them.

Speaker 0

That's giving you £220 for free.

Speaker 0

If you join it, you're new there.

Speaker 0

Then my top all rounder pick, first direct.

Speaker 0

It's giving you £210 for free at the moment if you switch to it.

Speaker 0

It's also number one rated for service in all the polls I do.

Speaker 0

Over 90% rated great.

Speaker 0

It's got a 7% regular saver.

Speaker 0

It's got a 0% overdraft up to £250 and it's got a top debit card for spending overseas.

Speaker 0

Another sort of bigger package, Lloyd's is giving £200 for free plus you get a choice of rewards like Disney plus for a year or magazine subscriptions or six free cinema tickets and then you got NatWest is giving £200 for free, Nationwide is giving £175 for free.

Speaker 0

So you can see that we have a plethora, a huge pot of different bank accounts willing to pay you at the moment and one of the things to remember at the moment is of course Christmas is coming.

Speaker 0

So if you switch right now just to run through the dates that you would get it, Barclays, if you did everything as quickly as you need to do and you've to check the eligibility, could have that by the November 27, HSBC by the December 17, First Direct by the November 22, Club Lloyd's by the October 29.

Speaker 0

You could have all that free cash in time for Christmas.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

So bank switching, the practicals.

Speaker 2

Doctor Beauty says for switching current account, is it mandatory to close the old one?

Speaker 2

My salary is linked to my current account.

Speaker 2

Do I need to inform my employer if I switch account?

Speaker 0

Well, let's do those two separately.

Speaker 0

Your old account will be closed.

Speaker 0

The only circumstances it tends not to be closed is if you have any form of overdraft because that can't be switched over, and then you can talk to the old bank about not closing it.

Speaker 0

They may.

Speaker 0

You could always ask them to keep it open, but the general process is when you are switching, you go through what's called the seven day switching service.

Speaker 0

Now it's actually seven working days.

Speaker 0

So in your head, think it's gonna take ten days to switch across.

Speaker 0

When you do that, they will close your old bank account for you.

Speaker 0

They will move over your direct debit.

Speaker 0

They will move over your standing orders.

Speaker 0

They will automatically forward any payments made to the old account will go to your new account.

Speaker 0

So if people are paying you, they should arrive and I hear very, very few problems.

Speaker 0

And if I'm hearing few problems, that means that your problems generally aren't happening.

Speaker 0

The only thing that is not automatically moved for you are recurring payments.

Speaker 0

That's where you give the long number on your debit card when you pay for something common with Netflix and, you know, Amazon Prime and subscription services.

Speaker 0

What will happen?

Speaker 0

Well, if you don't manually switch that over, then that company will get in touch with you and say, debit card is no longer working.

Speaker 0

You just put your new debit card in.

Speaker 0

So it isn't a biggie.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

Pete, is there a risk the mortgage won't get paid?

Speaker 2

What happens if it does?

Speaker 2

My credit file will be toast.

Speaker 0

I I I wouldn't think so.

Speaker 0

You would just pay it from the new bank account.

Speaker 0

Old payments have moved across for you.

Speaker 0

Your old balance is also moved across for you and you switch and one day it's your old account and then it's your new account.

Speaker 0

The money's in your account.

Speaker 0

You pay your mortgage.

Speaker 0

Your direct debit should be switched for you but I mean look, a couple of tips.

Speaker 0

This all, I get 87% I think it is people tell me it's easy and hassle free and most of the rest say it was a little bit tricky somewhere.

Speaker 0

I get very very few reports of problems about payments but what I would always do I would always look when my bank accounts are switched over.

Speaker 0

The first thing I'd do is check.

Speaker 0

I'd go to my employer and say, is my new bank account deal while the payment be auto forwarded.

Speaker 0

That's your most important money coming in.

Speaker 0

Just do that one manually.

Speaker 0

And if you're paying your mortgage, I would go into your direct debits once it's set up on the new account, which should be as soon as it's opened.

Speaker 0

I go into the page that list direct debits in standing order, and I would just check all the important ones are still in there and are being paid, and the payment dates are what you want, and it should be absolutely fine.

Speaker 0

But, I mean, that's belt and braces.

Speaker 0

Generally, it's all fine anyway.

Speaker 2

Andy, if I have a current account, a multiple savings account with one bank, what happens if the new bank wants to close my old current account?

Speaker 2

How do I move money around my savings account with that bank, or do I have to move those as well?

Speaker 0

So, generally, savings accounts aren't linked to your current account, but there are some savings accounts that say that you must have a current account with us in order to move the money through.

Speaker 0

What you would generate in those circumstances, I would probably suggest that you just go and open up it's...

Speaker 0

Once your account has been moved across, you go and open up its most basic current account and just have that as the place that the payments can be made into.

Speaker 0

You'd always double check, but most savings accounts are independent, but there are a few that aren't.

Speaker 0

So check whether that they they should usually be independent, but I know there are some that aren't.

Speaker 2

Romeo.

Speaker 0

Well, wherefore art that Romeo?

Speaker 2

He's heard that a few times.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

It's new.

Speaker 0

我……

I...

Speaker 0

That's just me.

Speaker 0

什么

What

Speaker 2

will happen to the investments within my stocks and shares account if I switch?

Speaker 2

Does that mean payments from the stocks and

Speaker 0

Well, I I don't know.

Speaker 0

I'm sort of thinking this is the same question as before that someone has stocks and shares in the same place that they have their current account and they think they're linked.

Speaker 0

I mean, I am not aware of any of those.

Speaker 0

It may be that you have to provide a new bank account detail in order for them to to take the money account, but most stocks and shares transactions are completely separate to your current account.

Speaker 0

你看。

Look.

Speaker 0

The the truth of all this is banks want you to think that the current account is the center of all your financial products, and they do that because the biggest measure of banking profitability is cross sell ratio.

Speaker 0

How many different products we can sell you?

Speaker 0

And the absolute best way if you are a bank to cross sell customers other products is for you to be the person that they have their main day to day current account with, which is why I've just gone through a list of how much they are willing to pay you Mhmm.

Speaker 0

To buy your current account custom because because they want they want to sell you other things.

Speaker 0

And that is the sort of the the the shimmering gray mist they want to have over these things.

Speaker 0

In the vast majority of cases, your credit cards, your stocks and shares, your insurance products, even if they're with the same bank are not linked to your current account.

Speaker 0

You are not obliged to have your current account.

Speaker 0

The only main exemption is certain regular savings accounts where you can put up to $203,100 quid a month and you get 7% interest, which are which are linked and you can only open if you have the current account.

Speaker 0

In those circumstances, you may well have the account closed down if you move your current account.

Speaker 0

But generally, this isn't an issue.

Speaker 0

But banks, of course, they would never say it.

Speaker 0

But there is this, as I say, a shimmering of pageness of them wanting you to think it because then, of course, they can cross sell you other items and other products.

Speaker 2

If we're going with the questions, there's some bigger offers being advertised.

Speaker 0

Yeah, there are big

Speaker 2

offers.

Speaker 2

They available to everyone?

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

So you're quite right.

Speaker 0

So these are higher earner only offers.

Speaker 0

So you usually need, again, like the normal bank account switching, you'll need to switch a couple of direct debits across.

Speaker 0

You'll need to use their current account service.

Speaker 0

You've also got Barclays is the top payer there.

Speaker 0

For that you need a minimum £75,000 salary.

Speaker 0

It'll give you £600 and free Apple TV and possibly a £500 0% overdraft.

Speaker 0

If you earn over a $100 HSBC is paying you £500 for free.

Speaker 0

It also gives you free worldwide family travel insurance.

Speaker 0

These are all fee free accounts by the way.

Speaker 0

All accounts I've mentioned are fee free.

Speaker 0

Worldwide family travel insurance and digital GP access so you can have a GP you can talk to anytime for free.

Speaker 0

NatWest Premier Rewards is also £500 free.

Speaker 0

That's a minimum £100,000 salary and potential £7 a month cashback.

Speaker 0

Lloyd's premier is £200 for free.

Speaker 0

Free digital GP access, Disney plus top overseas debit card, 1% cashback.

Speaker 0

So if you're earning over $75, these are fee...

Speaker 0

These aren't the packaged accounts where you pay.

Speaker 0

These are premier accounts where they're limiting the number of customers and they do pay substantially more and you know £600 was...

Speaker 0

Let's talk in real money, £600 if we earn over $75.

Speaker 0

Just to say, most bank accounts you can gemmy the minimum pay in if they have one.

Speaker 0

I mean Club Lloyd's has a minimum pay and Barclays has one you can't gemmy.

Speaker 0

What I mean by that is let's say they say you've got to pay in 2,000 a month and you were...

Speaker 0

Your take home is £1,800 a month.

Speaker 0

You can pay your 1,800 in, take out 200, and pay it back in.

Speaker 0

And now you've paid in £2,000 in the months.

Speaker 0

That would work with some.

Speaker 0

It doesn't work with Barclays.

Speaker 0

Most of the others I mentioned before actually just want you to pay in a grand or so or something similar in the first month.

Speaker 0

You don't have to pay in each month.

Speaker 0

But with these high earner accounts, they're actually looking really to see that you are earning that.

Speaker 0

So if you have variable income, you're earning over that in the year, you'll be fine.

Speaker 0

But if you were on $6,050,000 pounds and you think I'll take it out and pay it back in, they're much tighter on spotting that

Speaker 0

With the with the higher owner account.

Speaker 0

So I I wouldn't do it unless you're properly at that income level.

Speaker 2

David, are there any switches that you can do with a joint account?

Speaker 2

If there is, does the, you know, can't have an XXX account in the last XXX applied to both people or just the main applicant?

Speaker 0

That's a very interesting question.

Speaker 0

So let me answer the first bit first.

Speaker 0

Barclays Bank account, no to joint accounts.

Speaker 0

HSBC, no to joint accounts.

Speaker 0

First Direct,

First Direct, yes to switching joint accounts.

Speaker 0

Club Lloyd's,

Club Lloyd's, yes to switching joint accounts.

Speaker 0

NatWest, yes to switching joint accounts.

Speaker 0

So, yes, you can switch joint accounts, and you'll get the bonus.

Speaker 0

Now let's go into it in a in a little bit more detail.

Speaker 0

It's fascinating question.

Speaker 0

Santander, Club Lloyds, and NatWest say if either of you has had the switching bonus before, you can't get the switching bonus on a joint account.

Speaker 0

For Nationwide, if one of you has had the switching bonus before, you can get the switching bonus on a joint account.

Speaker 0

But if you have had the switching bonus on a joint account before, you can't get the switching bonus on a joint account.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Chris?

Chris?

Speaker 0

I I I managed to get through all this.

Speaker 2

Chris,

Chris, bank is can it be done on a joint account, Mr.

Speaker 2

And Mrs.

Speaker 2

And a single current account, Mrs.

Speaker 2

And gain the rewards on offer?

Speaker 0

Sometimes yes, sometimes no is the question.

Speaker 0

It depends on the bank.

Speaker 0

And I will be honest with you, I haven't got that detail to hand of whether you would be allowed a double bonus.

Speaker 0

Possibly, my guess is from the the terms and conditions I did have to hand maybe with Nationwide.

Speaker 0

Sometimes they allow it, sometimes they don't.

Speaker 0

So you are obviously better, by the way.

Speaker 0

You have a joint account.

Speaker 0

You're better to...

Speaker 0

You might keep your joint account where it is and switch your single accounts because then you're getting paid both of you.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

If you got two Barclays at the moment in total, that's £600.

Speaker 0

或者……

Or...

Speaker 0

And if you're both higher earners, that's £1,200.

Speaker 2

Andy m, can you really go around all the bank switching offers once?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

Only once?

Speaker 2

All the TNC says can't have had a switching bonus before.

Speaker 0

They do, and they are...

Speaker 0

The rules have been tightened up in recent years.

Speaker 0

So the the serial switch is out there, and there are many of them.

Speaker 0

We've talked about it before.

Speaker 0

People who earn thousands of pounds switching bank accounts.

Speaker 0

That's why interestingly, I didn't mention it when I was going through it, but HSBC is the most interesting offer for me because HSBC is quite rare.

Speaker 0

I'll just read you the terms because HSBC and First Direct are sister banks.

Speaker 0

They're part of the same company.

Speaker 0

So the first direct switching terms are you must be a new customer who has never had a first direct product or opened an HSBC bank account since January 2018.

Speaker 0

But the HSBC terms are you can do this even if you've had switch cash from HSBC or First Direct as long as it was before 2023 and you're no longer a customer.

Speaker 0

So there's quite a big difference between the eligibility criteria because HSBC is much rarer at giving it out.

Speaker 0

With the others out there, Barclays said you can't have received a previous switch bonus from it or have held an open current account on the October 1, which is when it launched this offer.

Speaker 0

And Club Lloyd says you can't have received a previous switch bonus from Lloyd's Halifax or Bank of Scotland since the 01/01/2023.

Speaker 0

So what I suggest people do is if you're doing what I call the burner account system.

Speaker 0

So the burner account system is you go and open a bank account somewhere like Monza or Starling or somewhere that you're not really gonna use.

Speaker 0

You keep your main account.

Speaker 0

You then use that as your starter because they don't pay incentives and you use that as your switcher account to move to a new switcher.

Speaker 0

So you move to one of those that pays you.

Speaker 0

You got to fulfill the minimum direct debits and the minimum income criteria and and you do that.

Speaker 0

You do it to get the switch bonus and then you move again and again and again.

Speaker 0

And you do those and then once you're done, you close them down and then you cross your fingers that in three years time or four years time, you may be eligible again.

Speaker 0

I need to give you a warning.

Speaker 0

Switching one bank account will have a minor short term impact on your credit reference files.

Speaker 0

It's really minor, but I wouldn't do it in a month or two before I'm about to get a mortgage.

Speaker 0

If you're repeatedly switching, that can have a hit.

Speaker 0

So that's mainly for people who don't need to make a big application in the next year or two if they're doing that.

Speaker 2

Marty of Shinfield says, Adrian and Martin, I've just rung NatWest, and they're paying me £300 to stay.

Speaker 2

Result.

Speaker 0

Marvelous.

Speaker 0

Go try that.

Speaker 0

I'd love to hear more of those.

Speaker 2

The Celebrity Traitors.

Speaker 2

Is that something you'd consider doing?

Speaker 0

Well, I've been asked to do both of them, if I'm honest with you.

Speaker 0

I was asked to do the first one and I wasn't watching Traitors at the time, so I said no.

Speaker 0

And then I...

Speaker 0

With my daughter who's 13 and absolutely loves Traitors, I got into it.

Speaker 0

And then they asked me to do the second one.

Speaker 0

And we actually, we got into conversations because like things like, I said, look, if I'm doing it, I don't know whether you shut off, but I need to speak to my daughter every day.

Speaker 0

I'm not going anywhere where I can't talk to my little girl because, you know, she's daddy's girl.

Speaker 0

She wouldn't say that.

Speaker 0

I would say that it's me who needs to talk to her and my wife, obviously, as well.

Speaker 0

Then, unfortunately, their filming time was when my live ITV shows were on.

Speaker 0

So I was committed to do the live ITV shows, it's my show.

Speaker 0

So I have to do it, and I enjoy doing it.

Speaker 0

And so I couldn't do it.

Speaker 0

So, if there's a third one, I would consider it, certainly.

Speaker 0

But I'm...

Speaker 0

One would like...

Speaker 0

Quite like to watch all of this one to see exactly what it is like.

Speaker 0

I've heard it was...

Speaker 0

They were filming for a lot of hours for this one.

Speaker 0

And it was quite hard.

Speaker 2

Interesting.

Speaker 2

Just do the tell us.

Speaker 2

Tell us about the tell us.

Speaker 0

Well, sticking with the same theme as we've been talking about, what I wanted to know very simply is what's the best freebie you've ever legitimately got, and what's the story behind how you got it?

Speaker 0

And there are some quite moving ones and some really interesting ones here.

Speaker 0

Why don't you start?

Speaker 2

Philip, when I worked for Woolworths, my store was top of the company for mystery shops.

Speaker 2

I got no recognition for this.

Speaker 2

So when a director visited my store on some PR exercise, I challenged him on this.

Speaker 2

Brave.

Speaker 2

The result was that my area manager got a dressing down for failing to reward me.

Speaker 2

I secured a £50 ahead night out for my team.

Speaker 2

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 2

Was back in the nineties.

Speaker 2

And I got the company Jaguar and and a fuel card for a week.

Speaker 0

So You've misreading that bit.

Speaker 0

Well, there's...

Speaker 0

It We we can we can paraphrase.

Speaker 2

We can go.

Speaker 2

The number plate is 1...

Speaker 2

是1 Foxtrot Whiskey Whiskey,1FWW。

Was 1 foxtrot whiskey whiskey, 1FWW.

Speaker 2

So the W and the w stood for work for Woolies, and the f will leave that to you I mean,

Speaker 0

I stood.

Speaker 0

So it's I Yeah.

Speaker 0

Something work for Woolies.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Brilliant.

Speaker 2

And he got the fuel card as well.

Speaker 2

So the car was delivered to the store.

Speaker 2

The local traffic warden said park it out front all day, and he wouldn't ticket it.

Speaker 2

I dropped the staff at home throughout the day throughout the day at the end of their shifts, then booked the week off work and racked up over 1,500 miles in a week.

Speaker 2

不错。

Nicely

Speaker 0

done.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

I'll do I'll do a short one now.

Speaker 0

Michelle, my best freebies is a Coleman cow gravy pourer.

Speaker 0

To this day, I don't know how I got it.

Speaker 0

It just got delivered.

Speaker 0

It comes out every now and then, probably when you're having gravy, I think.

Speaker 2

But it's just something...

Speaker 2

It's just something that pours well.

Speaker 2

A lot of things designed for pouring don't pour.

Speaker 2

我有……

I've...

Speaker 2

I I treasure some old

Speaker 0

big stuff.

Speaker 0

We a a water jug that is almost like a game if we have people and they try pour and the water.

Speaker 0

Can you pour it without any spill?

Speaker 0

It's impossible.

Speaker 0

It's impossible.

Speaker 0

我……

I...

Speaker 0

But Lara likes it.

Speaker 0

So it it goes out and...

Speaker 0

Stays.

Speaker 0

It stays.

Speaker 2

And it's it's it's poor functionality.

Speaker 2

You can't you can't leave it alone.

Speaker 2

这个……

This one...

Speaker 0

But that's...

Speaker 0

But the thing about the the the freebie and the...

Speaker 0

I think I think that would just make you love it more.

Speaker 0

就是……

It's...

Speaker 0

You know, whenever...

Speaker 0

If I have a certain places I go for lunch and you have a loyalty card, and if you get to eight, you get a free one.

Speaker 0

And it...

Speaker 0

The the free one just tastes better.

Speaker 0

Just just just like, this is great.

Speaker 0

This is my free one.

Speaker 0

And, yes, I'm all very, very well aware of the psychology of it and how it would...

Speaker 0

The loyalty retention bonus, but I'll be going there anyway.

Speaker 0

So it it works.

Speaker 0

Harry, I got

Speaker 2

two free concert tickets to my favorite singer in 2018.

Speaker 0

How I got them,

Speaker 2

I just happened to tweet that I wish I could go to a concert, and some lovely lady offered them to me for free.

Speaker 2

I was there three days later.

Speaker 2

Doesn't...

Speaker 2

He's very unspecific about the favorite singer.

Speaker 0

Well, I know.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 2

Maybe it's...

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

Somebody naff

Speaker 0

or something.

Speaker 0

Could Iglesiasi.

Speaker 2

Well, there's nothing wrong with him.

Speaker 0

对。

No.

Speaker 0

Nothing.

Speaker 0

I'm just picking someone that they didn't wanna say.

Speaker 0

Tracy, as a kinship carer, it's tough.

Speaker 0

I was raising four children on my own.

Speaker 0

Two were my daughters.

Speaker 0

Two and two were my kinship grandchildren.

Speaker 0

Money was and is tight.

Speaker 0

Timsons, the key cutters, offered up free holidays to foster carers at caravan holiday parks.

Speaker 0

They then decided to open it up to kinship carers as well.

Speaker 0

We were lucky enough to win one of the holidays.

Speaker 0

It was amazing.

Speaker 0

A whole week, all paid for, the passes, the static, all five of us actually got to have a holiday together and it was amazing.

Speaker 0

As kinship carers, we don't get paid as foster carers do.

Speaker 0

A lot of us are grandparents with limited funds or earning capacity.

Speaker 0

It really was the most amazing thing to win for my whole family.

Speaker 0

Big thank you to Timpsons.

Speaker 0

Oh, I like that.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Well done, Timpsons.

Speaker 2

Henrik, I once got a large Domino's Tandoori hot pizza free because the delivery driver was five minutes late.

Speaker 2

Still warm.

Speaker 2

Enjoyed it even more.

Speaker 2

Small wins.

Speaker 0

Julie, I was really broke when I was recovering from cancer.

Speaker 0

No wages.

Speaker 0

I went into a coffee shop with my daughter, which I really couldn't afford, and they gave us our drinks for free.

Speaker 0

Such a small thing, but I could have wept.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

马克。

Mark.

Speaker 2

Mark did the sound for the European cocktail championship Yay.

Speaker 2

And got given the biggest bottle of special edition Bacardi you've ever seen.

Speaker 2

It was, like, three times the size of a standard bottle.

Speaker 2

Also, he used to do the Ken Dodd shows at the London Philomonic Hall.

Speaker 2

Ken was like the Duracell battery of comedians.

Speaker 2

He just go on for hours.

Speaker 2

So the show started at 07:30.

Speaker 2

Still going at 10:30.

Speaker 2

Theater manager told him to wind up.

Speaker 2

So this night, he took it as a personal challenge.

Speaker 2

Theater manager said he'd charge Ken £1,000 an hour.

Speaker 2

So Ken kept on performing till half three in the morning.

Speaker 2

Then the next night brought every one of the crew a good bottle of whiskey.

Speaker 0

That sounds right, Ken.

Speaker 0

I was trying to think of my favorite freebie.

Speaker 0

I've told a story about a free pool table, an $8 pool table I got for free before, so I won't labor on that.

Speaker 0

But basically

Speaker 2

You're going...

Speaker 2

Just give give me an abbreviated version of

Speaker 0

I wanted a pool table.

Speaker 0

And a mate of mine said, someone lives near him has got a...

Speaker 0

Is giving away a pool table.

Speaker 0

And thought, well, I don't want...

Speaker 0

He said, no.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

I think it's a really good pool table.

Speaker 0

So I called up and the guy said, come around, have a look.

Speaker 0

And I went around, have a look.

Speaker 0

And it was a proper full, you know, hugely heavy American pool table, $8 table.

Speaker 0

And I said, why are giving it away?

Speaker 0

He said, because it's gonna cost me a grand to get it moved because it's so heavy.

Speaker 0

If you're willing to pay to have it taken out of here, you can have it.

Speaker 0

So I did.

Speaker 0

I got it rebased.

Speaker 0

It was absolutely beautiful.

Speaker 0

It was a really fantastic table.

Speaker 0

It cost me about a thousand pounds.

Speaker 2

I I know somebody who got a full size snooker table for exactly the same reasons.

Speaker 2

Big, heavy things.

Speaker 2

Incredible.

Speaker 0

You can't...

Speaker 0

You you need...

Speaker 0

It's industrial job to move it, so you have to pay people to move it.

Speaker 0

But I was gonna say probably my favorite freebie.

Speaker 0

I'm a massive athletics fan.

Speaker 0

I was a...

Speaker 0

Before I got into stats on financial products, it was stats and athletics when I was a kid.

Speaker 0

Could name all of them.

Speaker 0

No coincidence, Jeanette Quach is my co presenter on my ITV show.

Speaker 0

So I love it.

Speaker 0

And then I got talking to UK athletics and I got in with them and they talked about, we want someone to sort of...

Speaker 0

The thing to understand about athletics, most people are volunteers, a few people are professional.

Speaker 0

And we were talking about it, they said, we'd like to come and do anything for us.

Speaker 0

And we said that they wanted someone who'd be there for the stadium, who people who don't go to the athletics that often would recognize and could talk to them about why athletics is so good inside Putler.

Speaker 0

So I did the World Athletics Championships in 2017, Right?

Speaker 0

And there was Ewan Thomas was the professional stadium presenter and I was the volunteer, which is how athletics works.

Speaker 0

And I'd go around with a microphone on my head saying, look, the high jump bar is still another foot over me standing with a microphone.

Speaker 0

And for that, I got...

Speaker 0

And I would have gone to the event anyway.

Speaker 0

I got a free ticket every night inside the track and field whenever I was...

Speaker 0

I only did about five minute long things a night.

Speaker 0

The rest of it, I sat next to the high jump bar watching the high jump two meters from the the finish track for the 100 meters.

Speaker 0

Now you...

Speaker 0

You've done lots of sports broadcasting.

Speaker 0

I've not.

Speaker 0

It was the best freebie I've ever had in my life.

Speaker 0

我……

I...

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I had to do five minutes, which I enjoyed anyway.

Speaker 0

Broadcasting, amazing.

Speaker 0

That was mine.

Speaker 2

That's a beautiful thing.

Speaker 2

Do you know mine was?

Speaker 2

I went to the British Comedy Awards once.

Speaker 2

Found it very stressful.

Speaker 2

It went on forever.

Speaker 2

And there was a goodie bag, which you pressed into our hands as we left.

Speaker 2

I was so ready to go home.

Speaker 2

I was starving because there was next to no food.

Speaker 2

It's about 01:00 in the morning.

Speaker 2

And I looked in the goodie bag, and there was a giant pork pie.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

And I just Wouldn't have worked for me.

Speaker 2

对。

No.

Speaker 2

It wouldn't have worked for you, but just try try and imagine something similar.

Speaker 2

And I just ate it like a...

Speaker 2

Like an apple in the back of a cab, and it was it was just it was just the job.

Speaker 2

That was the best freebie ever.

Speaker 0

Probably my best perk, not quite a freebie ever Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Was I really...

Speaker 0

Can't believe I'm telling you this, but it's Lara's favorite story.

Speaker 0

确实。

Quite.

Speaker 0

I really...

Speaker 0

I'd really needed the loo once, and we were at a tube station.

Speaker 0

And I asked the guy, is there a toilet I can use?

Speaker 0

He says, there's no toilets here, mate.

Speaker 0

He says, but Martin, you've helped me a lot.

Speaker 0

There's a staff one.

Speaker 0

And they let me use the staff loo.

Speaker 0

And at that moment, that's very similar to your pork pie.

Speaker 0

I mean, yours was input, mine was output, but it was really, really what I needed.

Speaker 0

The right thing.

Speaker 0

The right moment.

Speaker 0

Two more of these because I've got...

Speaker 0

They've got low.

Speaker 0

But let...

Speaker 0

There's a dotted line at the end.

Speaker 0

Let's get to those.

Speaker 0

Mike got an LG American style fridge freezer by agreeing to review it after I'd had it six weeks.

Speaker 0

Absolutely free of charge.

Speaker 0

I like the fact you got the freebie.

Speaker 0

I always worry about those review type things because I think it makes you review it not necessarily in an unbiased way.

Speaker 2

Cecilia went to Harvey Nick's for tapas and wine, and why not?

Speaker 2

Three out of the eight dishes were unavailable.

Speaker 2

Disappointing.

Speaker 2

Enjoyed our wine and other dishes when it came to pay.

Speaker 2

The server announced the food is complimentary.

Speaker 2

We couldn't possibly charge you when our normal selection wasn't available.

Speaker 2

Fab service.

Speaker 0

And let's finish with Nilani.

Speaker 0

Years ago, I'd had some difficult news and was in a dark place.

Speaker 0

I walked into Starbucks and bought a coffee and sat there drinking it.

Speaker 0

I was visibly upset, and I was gathering my thoughts.

Speaker 0

When I was leaving, I saw some takeaway mugs on sale, so I bought one.

Speaker 0

The gentleman behind the bar asked me to pick up a normal mug behind me that was just for sale, not on sale.

Speaker 0

I didn't know why he was asking, but I did it anyway and handed it to him.

Speaker 0

He just packed it up and said, it's for you.

Speaker 0

Never charged me for it.

Speaker 0

I still have the mug.

Speaker 0

And I actually find it's quite moving.

Speaker 0

And whenever I use it, it reminds me of the kindness a stranger showed me on a dark day.

Speaker 0

No words, no questions.

Speaker 0

Just a gift to put a smile on my face.

Speaker 2

真好。

Sweet.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

Amazing.

Speaker 2

What shall we

Speaker 0

Do you know what?

Speaker 0

Because it's more important.

Speaker 0

I wanna do cashback cards, but we might do those after.

Speaker 0

I think we should probably go to Mastermind now if the guys will play the theme tune.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

I always find myself open.

Speaker 2

They lose the theme tune, which means we can't do it, but they let me down every week.

Speaker 0

I think you should be more bullish, Adrian.

Speaker 0

Welcome to Money Mastermind.

Speaker 0

You've got 23 right and 44 wrong in this three option multiple choice quiz, which means, hurrah, you are back to BRC.

Speaker 0

Better than random chance.

Speaker 0

Someone did write to me about you the other day on social and they called you Adrian n b r c, Giles.

Speaker 0

I'll settle for that.

Speaker 0

So anyway, Adrian has been worried this week about the news on the triple lock.

Speaker 0

Why does Burnham want my biscuits?

Speaker 0

As you may have realized, Adrian has confused a major public policy debate with his Bikky Tim protections from the other presenters in the five Live office.

Speaker 0

His lock one is a bike delock wrapped around it.

Speaker 0

Matt Shawnee tries to get in every week.

Speaker 0

没门。

No chance.

Speaker 0

He's defeated every time.

Speaker 0

Naga can get through that lock in seconds with a safety pin and her suspiciously bendy fingers, but she fail...

Speaker 0

Falls foul of lock two, Adrian's combination lock.

Speaker 0

Nikki Campbell can crack that quicker than Alan Turing on a tea break, but even big boy Campbell backs off when he sees lock three, guarded by a crocodile called Gary who hasn't blinked since 2019.

Speaker 0

Unbreakable.

Speaker 0

Or is it?

Speaker 2

Nice He's got in.

Speaker 0

Nice hobnob, Adrian.

Speaker 2

You nicked my hobnob.

Speaker 0

对。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

I've actually got a packet here.

Speaker 0

买的。

Bought them.

Speaker 0

I bought them pressed just for the print then.

Speaker 0

Anyway, so I've...

Speaker 0

You never...

Speaker 0

It's just like the first rule of broadcasting.

Speaker 0

Never even remember.

Speaker 0

Did you?

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

I sort of did, and I just thought I'm gonna run with it anyway, and I'm now doing it.

Speaker 0

So when the change to the state pension triple lock comes in as is proposed to happen in 2030, What is the most likely result of this scenario?

Speaker 0

You might need to write this down.

Speaker 0

Year one.

Speaker 0

CPI inflation is 3%.

Speaker 0

Average earnings rise 2%.

Speaker 0

Year two, CPI inflation is 4%, average earnings rise 6%.

Speaker 0

Clearly in year one, it will rise 3% because the highest of the figures is 3%.

Speaker 0

It's had an average earnings at 2%.

Speaker 0

It's higher than 2.5%, which is the third lock.

Speaker 0

How much would it rise in year two?

Speaker 0

A,4%,B,5%,C,6%。

A, 4%, b, 5%, c, 6%.

Speaker 0

In year two, remember, inflation was 4% and average earnings rise 6%.

Speaker 0

So it's risen 3% in year one Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And average earnings was 2% in year one.

Speaker 0

In the second year, inflation is 4% and average earnings rise 6%.

Speaker 0

Under the new system...

Speaker 0

Well, do you know under the old system, under the current system, what it would rise?

Speaker 2

I can't I can't say I I can't say

Speaker 0

I do.

Speaker 0

Well, just because I really want people to understand this, I will explain the current system now.

Speaker 0

The current triple lock says, the state pension rises each April with the highest of 2.5%, so that's the floor effectively, or CPI inflation or average earnings.

Speaker 0

So that's the current triple lock.

Speaker 0

So what would the situation be in the current triple lock?

Speaker 2

It would be the same.

Speaker 2

It would be three...

Speaker 2

It'd be 3%.

Speaker 0

In year one, and what in year

Speaker 2

two?

Speaker 2

It would be CPX percent.

Speaker 0

对。

Correct.

Speaker 0

所以它

So it

Speaker 2

would Average go earnings.

Speaker 0

Average earnings.

Speaker 0

So it would go to 9% compounded.

Speaker 0

I'm not...

Speaker 0

You know, we're not gonna do the...

Speaker 0

Go for What?

Speaker 2

Over two?

Speaker 0

Over two years.

Speaker 0

It was 3% in year one, 6% in year two, total over the two years, 9% plus compounded.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Now what I'm asking you is under the new system, you've got in that second year, you've got inflation is 4% and average earning 6%.

Speaker 0

How much would it go up?

Speaker 0

A,几年。

A, for years.

Speaker 0

Oh, no.
