Speaker 0

I have been a therapist now for a few years, and as most of you will know, this has been a progression from starting as a self employed yoga and mindfulness teacher in 2018 to where I am now as a psychotherapist.

Speaker 0

And that journey took me from working with groups of people to working as a life coach one to one, helping people with their inner world even more, to becoming a therapist because I wanted to help people deepen their journey, deepen their understanding of themselves to be able to heal and process their trauma.

Speaker 0

Because it was really helpful for me at a key pivotal time in my life when I really, really needed it.

Speaker 0

And I've noticed that the pattern with me is to help people in the ways that I've been helped.

Speaker 0

And this was very present for me from becoming a personal trainer in the year 2000.

Speaker 0

I went into fitness and personal training because again, I found something that had really connected me to me at that point.

Speaker 0

And whilst fitness for me did at a certain point become a very externalized focus and it became around how I looked.

Speaker 0

My intention for starting fitness was the joy.

Speaker 0

So when I was 19, I started working out because I had put on a bit of weight and I wanted to see if fitness would help that.

Speaker 0

But I actually found a real love for group exercise at that point.

Speaker 0

And it it gave me a sense of self that was different, Gave me a sense of self that was, I would say more true to who I am because I still work out today and I still really love it.

Speaker 0

But what I really noticed was how much it helped me and that's why I embarked on that version of my career.

Speaker 0

So every career evolution has involved me finding deeper layers of myself, realizing what helped me to get there, and then be able to pivot so that I can offer that to other people based around the wisdom that I had gained too.

Speaker 0

So my intention and purpose for therapy was always to give, to be able to give a safer space for people to go deeper into their own journey of healing.

Speaker 0

And what I really love about therapy is it is licensed, it's registered, it has governing bodies, there are guidelines, there are ethics.

Speaker 0

And for me, that's really important.

Speaker 0

I really value that framework and pride myself on being that person.

Speaker 0

But what I also noticed becoming a therapist was this real disconnect to the spirit of being human.

Speaker 0

And so let me explain that.

Speaker 0

I don't want to do any therapists or therapy a disservice when I'm saying this.

Speaker 0

But for me, especially with marketing, like we know that Instagram has gone through many changes in the last six years, and I've been there running a business through the whole the whole period of time.

Speaker 0

There is this real need to market yourself in a very succinct way, in a very focused way, in a very I can explain this easily way.

Speaker 0

And the basis or the meaning of psychotherapy is the treatment of mental conditions by verbal communication and interaction.

Speaker 0

So essentially talk therapy.

Speaker 0

Psychotherapy is therapy of the mind.

Speaker 0

And what I noticed was this is being taken in a very purified way and often not what happens really in sessions with a lot of therapists, but for sure when we are talking about therapy, it's very much kept to that boundary that we talk about the mind.

Speaker 0

We may talk about the nervous system because it's connected in.

Speaker 0

What often isn't talked about is the felt sense of being human, our spiritual self, our our true self.

Speaker 0

The person that we are underneath all that is weighing us down, whether that be current lifestyle, current life factors, the past, our experiences, our trauma, Buried beneath all of that is this true self.

Speaker 0

And for me, in session, I like to bring the spirit of being human in.

Speaker 0

I don't like to leave it outside.

Speaker 0

Well, I believe this is true of many therapists too.

Speaker 0

I don't think I'm unique in this.

Speaker 0

But it's often not spoken about.

Speaker 0

And what I found was that I couldn't speak about the the spiritual sense of being human easily.

Speaker 0

And I found just talking about psychotherapy or therapy quite binary.

Speaker 0

The the meaning of spiritual is relating or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

Speaker 0

And psychospiritual is of or pertaining to the relationship between spirituality and the mind.

Speaker 0

So when I'm talking about spirituality, I'm talking about the felt sense of being human, our energy, our essence.

Speaker 0

本真。

Essence.

Speaker 0

When we're born, we are born as energy.

Speaker 0

We don't have, cognitive function.

Speaker 0

That is the cognitive function that we have as an adult.

Speaker 0

We have understanding based around energy.

Speaker 0

The only form of communication that we have is crying, and the only form of information we have is when we feel something.

Speaker 0

So when we feel hungry, when we feel thirsty, when we need our nappy changing, when we wake up in the night.

Speaker 0

We are very energetic beings and that's all we're born with, this felt sense.

Speaker 0

And what often happens within that childhood experience when we're born is that there's a disruption to the felt sense of being taken care of.

Speaker 0

So we experience abandonment or rejection on many different levels, whether that's physical, mental, emotional, or all three.

Speaker 0

But we don't cognitively, as in we don't apply our mind to that information at that point.

Speaker 0

We take it as an imprint and we learn it over time.

Speaker 0

We get the felt sense of rejection, abandonment, not being cared for.

Speaker 0

So when we become adults, we don't necessarily focus on that felt sense of what happened when we were younger.

Speaker 0

The imprints perceptions that we have are just as important as the experiences and what we were told or not told.

Speaker 0

Spirituality of self has also been hijacked by the term spiritual to mean something external to us.

Speaker 0

And actually spirituality is about going within.

Speaker 0

And it's been hijacked, particularly on social media, to be a product of something.

Speaker 0

So when you think of spiritual, you might go towards yoga, mindfulness, meditation, certain religions.

Speaker 0

You might have an image of what somebody who is spiritual might look like.

Speaker 0

It's very much been branded as a product or a way of being that actually sits externally to you.

Speaker 0

But I know that yoga and mindfulness practices, they are predominantly there to help you to connect with you on a deeper level, but they change their format quite rapidly when social media kind of took it and made it an aesthetic thing that you needed.

Speaker 0

Something that you needed.

Speaker 0

Something you needed to have in your life.

Speaker 0

I still believe that yoga and mindfulness are truly amazing at being able to connect you to you.

Speaker 0

But the reality is it's being in an environment with lots of different people.

Speaker 0

And as a teacher, I would say things and it would land with some people, but it won't land with others because it's not bespoke.

Speaker 0

So if you're searching for purpose and spiritual meaning and you're going towards yoga and mindfulness because that's essentially what kind of marketing tells us to do, you might not be getting the full experience of being connected to yourself.

Speaker 0

And so one of the reasons that I'm talking more about spirituality within what I do and actually labeling what I do with the term spiritual is to introduce from the get go the concept of you are a spiritual being.

Speaker 0

We have a mind, and that mind is very logical, and that mind likes to fix problems.

Speaker 0

And this is one of the things that causes us issues is how the mind takes over and makes everything a problem that needs to be solved.

Speaker 0

The felt sense of being a human means we're actually very, very content with very little.

Speaker 0

All we really need is our basic needs to be met and to have love, belonging and community.

Speaker 0

And essentially, that is it from a survival perspective.

Speaker 0

When we look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs, baseline needs are food, shelter, water, rest.

Speaker 0

The next level up is financial security and job.

Speaker 0

The next level up is love and belonging.

Speaker 0

Above that sits self esteem and self actualization.

Speaker 0

His theory is that when we have met the bottom three layers of the pyramid, that we move into self esteem and self actualization.

Speaker 0

Self actualization being the best version of ourselves.

Speaker 0

But the best version of ourselves has been very misunderstood and has now become yet another product and commodity that is something that we're searching for and trying to attain rather than become.

Speaker 0

When we realize who we truly are, how little we truly need, and we start to let go of what we think allows us to fit in, what keeps us safe, When we find trust and faith in who we are at our core spiritual level, that's when everything starts to change.

Speaker 0

And we only get there through working with the mind and the body together to be able to redefine what we think of as safety, to heal our trauma, our experiences, our perceptions, to change our belief systems, to go within and remove everything that has been getting in the way of our self connection on the truest level.

Speaker 0

Essentially, this meeting of mind and spirituality is about you becoming your whole self.

Speaker 0

And I am not here to do a disservice to therapy because therapy is the core of what I do.

Speaker 0

Psychotherapy is the core of what I do, but I no longer want to leave spirituality at the door.

Speaker 0

And what this allows me to do is explain a lot about being human, the felt sense of being human, rather than, you know, the statistics around anxiety and how anxiety works and how the nervous system works.

Speaker 0

Every bit of nuance and context gets lost on social media.

Speaker 0

And that's why I love podcasts because I can add all of these layers in, and I'm really grateful that you like these layers coming in too.

Speaker 0

But the fact is we are multifaceted, multilayered humans.

Speaker 0

The thing that we all have in common is that we all have a spirit.

Speaker 0

We all have a soul.

Speaker 0

We all have a true self.

Speaker 0

That's what bonds us.

Speaker 0

That's what connects us.

Speaker 0

But we've lost sight of that.

Speaker 0

We're all trying to be this version of ourselves that society says is acceptable, is successful, and we're all aiming to be almost the same person, to have the same things.

Speaker 0

Whereas the reality is we're all very different.

Speaker 0

We all have our own uniqueness.

Speaker 0

We all have our own spirit.

Speaker 0

And let me give you some examples if you feel a bit skeptical about this whole spirit thing.

Speaker 0

But you you know, if you have any kind of animal, dog, cat, bird, whatever it may be, they all have a different personality, but they don't talk.

Speaker 0

They don't communicate in any other way than their level of communication.

Speaker 0

So, when I had a cat and I considered her to be my best friend, we'd never had a conversation.

Speaker 0

She'd never cognitively listened to my words.

Speaker 0

But we had an an unspoken bond.

Speaker 0

It was a heart connection.

Speaker 0

It was love.

Speaker 0

We cannot explain love in a logical scientific way.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

They've tried, but we can't.

Speaker 0

That's one of the biggest factors about self love.

Speaker 0

Self love is a felt thing.

Speaker 0

And self love, in my opinion, from working with so many people on this now and also my own journey, is giving us what we lacked in our past.

Speaker 0

It's giving us the love that we didn't have as children.

Speaker 0

It's giving us the secure foundation within that we didn't gain from the people around us at that age.

Speaker 0

But love is a a felt sense.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Love is a verb.

Speaker 0

Love is a doing word, and acts of love towards yourself are important.

Speaker 0

But it's still a felt sense.

Speaker 0

It's an unspoken, unfathomable thing that lives within us.

Speaker 0

And you know this because, you know, we feel love in the hot center of the chest.

Speaker 0

We have a heart energy space.

Speaker 0

We feel, you know, the anxiety and the gut.

Speaker 0

We have those feelings.

Speaker 0

We feel certain things that are very real.

Speaker 0

If you've ever had that sense of not being able to get your words out or feeling choked up, again, related to speaking your truth.

Speaker 0

And our body is, you know, just as intelligent as our mind.

Speaker 0

The two need to come together.

Speaker 0

But beneath all that, you are an incredible soul.

Speaker 0

You have an incredible soul.

Speaker 0

You are an incredible soul.

Speaker 0

And all of these things that surround that are getting in the way of you seeing it.

Speaker 0

And so that's why I wanna bring it in to conversations more.

Speaker 0

That's why I wanna talk about it more.

Speaker 0

And the way I see it now is if you look at the name psychospiritual therapist, spiritual is at the center of what I am called.

Speaker 0

Spiritual is at the center of what I of what I do because you are at the center of yourself.

Speaker 0

You are in the middle of all of that stuff that has surrounded you to protect you, to keep you safe, the stuff that hurt you.

Speaker 0

Underneath all of that, in the middle of all of that is this felt sense that is you, this spiritual soul self, what I call your true self.

Speaker 0

And that's what this journey is.

Speaker 0

It's finding that version of you and really growing to feel safe within that person, to to feel love for that person, to know that whatever dimmed that light was a false narrative, that it's absolutely okay to be you, to say yes, to say no, to have boundaries, to follow your true path as your true self.

Speaker 0

But the reality is the mind is there to protect us.

Speaker 0

The ego mind is there to protect.

Speaker 0

And that's what we're working with.

Speaker 0

That's what we're working with, that pattern between the mind and the body, to overcome.

Speaker 0

So it's all relative.

Speaker 0

Now that was a pretty big explanation about why I am so passionate about psychospirituality.

Speaker 0

So I'm going to re land on a few of those pointers just to kind of give clarity really.

Speaker 0

But psychotherapy is the treatment of mental conditions by verbal communication and interaction.

Speaker 0

Spiritual is relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

So if we combine those together, psychospiritual is of or pertaining to the relationship between spirituality and the mind.

Speaker 0

I want to be able to connect the dots around true spirituality and the truth of finding you.

Speaker 0

And we can't really find self love without learning to love all parts of ourself.

Speaker 0

But when we really get to that core true self and allow that person to become the biggest version of who we are, that's when we find self actualization.

Speaker 0

Self actualization is not a thing to be attained, to do, to find purpose in.

Speaker 0

It's just to learn how to be you and be content with yourself.

Speaker 0

And that's pretty much it for this first session.

Speaker 0

First session?

Speaker 0

First podcast episode of a new season.

Speaker 0

And in my usual style, it's a very kind of eclectic, big explanation.

Speaker 0

But I really enjoyed that.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

I love that for me.

Speaker 0

And I love that sense of being accepting of I'm not very succinct as a person.

Speaker 0

So this new way of sharing what I do really sits with who I am too.

Speaker 0

And I hope it sits with who you are.

Speaker 0

I hope that this podcast resonated for you.

Speaker 0

I hope that you felt this kind of understanding of, oh, yeah, I do.

Speaker 0

I I have a spiritual self.

Speaker 0

Like, I can see that in animals.

Speaker 0

Like, they all have a different spirit.

Speaker 0

They have a different vibe.

Speaker 0

They have a different energy and that we're no different.

Speaker 0

It's just about us all learning that we are all different, that we are all okay, that we are all enough and to find acceptance within that.

Speaker 0
