I'm allowed to say, because I've been given permission, this was the funniest bit.
Helen could not stop farting.
It was just I think after the the first time, she went, oh, really sorry about that.
And I was I think we're just gonna have to, like, not say sorry
for Lincoln.
This is just going to happen.
However, I sort of managed to kind of contain myself, and I don't know how, but I did.
Turned around at twenty five k.
I ran back, and I had to text her when I was on the train on the way back.
And I said, I just need to let you know that that whole downhill through the Denbigh's Wine Estate, that was all fart power.
All fart.
It's speed boost.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
With every step as well, it's like, like, the way back in, just going
It makes me think of, you know, on Mario Kart where you get the little toadstool, but you have to, like, press to use it.
So it's like Yes.
As you go along.
That is it.
That's yeah.
That's exactly it.

你好。
Hello.
I think we need to just launch straight in because everyone is gonna be so excited to hear.
Oh, god.
Are you are you an ultra runner now?
An ultra marathoner.
I am an ultra marathoner.
I've done it.
I've actually
Oh done my god.
I'm so proud of you.
Dave, insert firework effects.
He won't do it because it'll cost.
But yeah, we haven't
got the budget for firework effects.
We have no budget for that.
Yeah, I am.
我有。
I am.
I don't feel like one.
Don't feel different.
It's not like, you know, the first time you have sex or anything.
I don't I haven't
I was literally thinking that.
I was thinking turning 30 or losing your virginity.
Where I was like, oh, and How do how do you feel?
是的。
Yeah.
Normal, same.
是的。
Yeah.
Lots of peep I've I've seen quite a few neighbors and friends this morning just as I was going on my kind of I went on a little walk this morning to just ease off a bit.
But I don't think anyone could see it in my face, you know?
对。
Yeah.
Maybe we
need to have
some sort of like, I don't know, identifying I was gonna say a badge, but maybe that all sounds a little bit fascist.
But I I feel like you need something to show that you are an ultra marathoner.
Should've won
the medal.
Should've won the medal.
But the maybe maybe I get a tattoo.
I don't know.
You could, like all those people
who get Iron Man ones and things and Could do, couldn't I?
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
哦,
Oh,
好的。
okay.
So first question, how are you feeling today?
So for the listener, this is Yeah.
Twenty four hours I mean, less than twenty four hours after you finished.
明白。
Mhmm.
So we are hot off the trails.
We are hot off the trails.
I am absolutely knackered.
And I was just I was listening to myself talk earlier, and it it's not quite as bad.
Like, I remember when I did, there was a marathon I did when you didn't do it and we did a pod the day after and you were asking me and I was like, speaking like this when I
是的。
Yeah.
And didn't we look And there is something to do with your, like your chest and your
是的。
Yeah.
There's something, isn't there?
对。
Yeah.
So I can really I to me, my voice sounds a bit coldy.
So I can really
just sound sort of a bit French.
That's fine.
You do oh, brilliant.
So as long as I don't sound like a six year old South Londoner, which is what I always assume I do.
I always think I sound a bit like that.
I know.
That's the impression you always do of yourself.
But I think actually, you're you're too harsh.
You're not as as awful dodgers as you think.
Shit.
Or maybe Fagan now.
Maybe it's
Fagan now.
对。
Yes.
Oh, shit.
Oh, no.
Oh, that's a terrible fall from grace.
Oh, I didn't even get to Nancy.
算了。
Oh, well.
总之。
Anyway.
是的。
Yeah.
不是。
No.
So I feel, yeah, I feel a bit kind of raw on the inside Mhmm.
And on the outside, very, very raw.
Just, yeah.
My my my standing desk has been taken down for the purposes of Dungeons and Dragons yesterday.
And this is all too much information.
The boys, the geek boys were all playing, and my standing desk had to be taken down.
So I haven't been standing up this morning.
And every time I sit down, it takes me about five years to get back up again.
是的。
Mhmm.
So I'm finding that quite tough.
That's probably no bad I think your body could probably do with it.
对。
Yeah.
I feel so.
Feel Leave it
in the dungeon for now.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So I feel, yeah, a bit a bit kind of creaky legged and and I think the worst thing is that I like, within about I mean, I'm skipping way ahead.
But within about, like, I don't know, three or four miles of it, like Helen would probably be able to tell you, but I rolled my ankle to such a comic degree.
Like a real like a big spaghetti roll of my entire body.
Didn't fall down, but just a big, big roll.
And then I must have kind of I must have done it to such an extent that I then rolled it again and again and again and again and again and again.
Oh, So I can't I rolled my ankle, yeah, I don't know, seven, eight times.
And I just kept on thinking about it.
It was fine to run on, but as I was running, was like, that is gonna come back to bite me on the arse.
是的。
Yeah.
So it does that does feel quite delicate.
Like, you know, like, when you do, like, foot rolls, that kind of can feel it.
I've clearly pulled and slightly Like, over extended or whatever.
Over extended.
是的
Yeah.
I've bruised and damaged that a little bit.
But yeah, other than that, fine.
Back okay?
Back is okay.
Hey, that's a win.
What a comeback.
I know.
I do like we need to acknowledge this.
It's like the, you know, when this is so like TikTok generation of me and people like, the glow up needs to be studied.
I feel like that about your last few months that like, you've gone from we need to take a moment to acknowledge that you've gone from genuinely not being able to run to doing an ultra marathon.
Probably not recommended.
Don't try this at home.
But also, wow, hats off.
Oh my god.
In Japan.
但是,
But,
you know, what are the things I've done that are different?
And the things that I've done that are different is I've kept my strength training roughly the same, but I've reduced my running.
是的。
Yeah.
That's the lesson for us all a bit.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
I've reduced it.
And and well, maybe I shouldn't say this on the Women's Running Podcast.
I haven't followed a training plan.
对。
Mhmm.
I mean, I sort of did.
I sort of did.
Because it scared the shit out of me about ten weeks ago.
Was like, I need really need to increase my distance.
But yeah, it really helped.
And it really helped me not feel massively nervous about things.
对。
Yeah.
And it's weird.
So shall I take you through it?
Please.
Let's go.
Do you wanna take us take us through like the whole weekend a little bit?
Like, what was your Saturday like?
Well, that was it was all really nice because the weather was the weather was beautiful though hot, and so we were all a bit worried and stuff.
But I I was staying in a delightful one star travel lodge in Dorking, which I turned up about sort of half five or something.
And and Helen Thorne was already there, which was really nice.
And then we were going out for dinner.
So all of that was like really nice.
So we're meeting up with Sophie Power and going to going to have like a pub meal just down the Nice.
Within like five minutes walking distance.
And like the travel lodge also, it was right next to a Tesco Express, which for some reason, it was so funny.
We came we went and had like chicken and chips and it was perfect.
It was absolutely perfect.
And there was a kind of a look around the table of, should we have pudding?
And I was like, do you know what?
I just want to buy chocolate and sit in my bed and eat chocolate rather than have pudding here, which is exactly what I did.
So we went to Tesco Express afterwards and bought myself.
I bought myself, you know, the double deckers that come in, like, two little mini bars but in one packet?
是的。
Yeah.
And I said to Helen, I'll buy this.
I'm like, I'll only have the one.
Bollocks.
不行。
No.
It's impossible to not have both.
Are they called, like is that is it a mini decker?
A mini
It's something like that.
Has a funny little name.
Yeah.
It's got a weird thing, isn't it?
And so I I got that.
But we we'd first of all, we'd piss ourselves laughing because the why was that so funny?
I think adrenaline.
I think there's something about nerves and stuff.
But we were standing outside this Tesco Express, it had an automatic door which opened so incredibly slowly.
It just went subjective.
So we were like, what the fuck is that?
Like it kinda misses overall in the door.
So, yeah.
没错。
So, yeah.
We had a really nice meal and lots of kind of pep talks from Sophie who was like, an ultra is easier than a marathon.
An ultra is easier than a marathon.
And me and Helen just giving each other side eyes going, is it though?
Is it though?
Seems longer.
Don't know why that is.
So And
perhaps harder.
所以
So
and then we'd me and Helen had a bit of a chat about like what we do and stuff and how we and and it was it was really nice because then the following morning, so cut to the chase.
Following morning, we were then picked up.
It was so random, the running industry.
We were picked up outside the travel lodge by Kelly from Nixie Body.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, it feels like just like a whole, like, reunion of women It was amazing.
We love.
Yeah, was.
And women who are like, I love that this kind of like gang is forming.
You know?
Was lovely.
She picked us up.
She gave me some pants.
I was wearing her pants anyway.
And oh my God.
Oh my God.
They were great.
I did I talked about this, I think.
I think I might have talked about it on Instagram, but I was like, like both me and Helen had agreed that we'd gone from the seventies bikini pants to the full brief.
是的。
Yeah.
Like it and both of us loving it.
对。
Yeah.
And I was like, I really hope that I don't actually look like a 52 year old.
In my head, I'm thinking nineteen fifties pin up.
没错。
Yeah.
That's how I feel when I wear those pants too.
Then I look in there and I'm like, oh, okay.
不行。
No.
对。
Yeah.
Just No.
对。
Yeah.
Bridget Jones.
对。
Yeah.
Reign that bat in and Yeah.
是的
Yeah.
特别大
Just massive
跳
jump.
I do find that really interesting because I I like maybe I need to try some of the Nicksy big ones.
对
Mhmm.
Because I find that big pants often, weirdly, I have more opportunity for chafe than if I do a thong.
天啊
God.
And a thong.
Well, keeps the cheeks apart.
对。
Yes.
Now see, I And that's what I need.
I cannot compare and contrast.
Nixie
Nixie does do a thong, and I don't know if you have that.
But can't compare and contrast because anytime I try on a thong, it makes me so desperately upset that I go straight back to normal pants.
So I'm not I know you're a thong gal.
I'm not just need something to part the Red Sea.
是的。
Yeah.
That sounds horrible.
I've got nothing in the back here.
So I just what I want is something that, as these pants do, comes up up to almost at the exact same level as your leggings.
And it just keeps everything, yeah, just there.
So we we would yeah.
We were picked up by Kelly, driven five minutes up the road.
And this was this was the beauty of it, I think.
没有。
No.
I mean, there were so many beautiful moments, but what I loved was it was so accessible, like, from a logistic point of view.
Like, it took it took me two hours door to door to get to the hotel from Bath even though it was Surrey.
It took That's not bad.
Did you go past Stonehenge?
没有。
No.
Oh, no.
A train.
Oh, okay.
没有。
No.
Sorry.
Train.
So didn't go past Stonehenge.
Could have gone past Stonehenge.
是的。
Yeah.
I was gonna say that's my favorite bit of going to Surrey.
Yeah.
That is Bit that's bit of Henge on the way.
Slowing down like everyone else and having a Yeah.
So so that was that was really, really simple.
And then then, yeah, this place is like five minutes away.
So Denby's wine vineyard thing is, yeah, five minutes away.
So we we then drove there, which is really easy.
And it was just like you said, we got out and it was just suddenly there were just like loads of people there that we knew.
And that there was this kind of really weird thing where I was talking to Kelly and Leanne from Monkey Socks was there And all three of us were talking.
Turned out, Leanne did not know Kelly and Kelly did not know Leanne.
I like my god.
什么?
What?
You guys are at the National Running Show.
Everyone knows both of you.
Surely.
How come you and your socks and your pants
have been on the the running underwear industry.
没错。
Exactly.
Oh my So it felt really lovely to be able to introduce them and just go like, guys.
But both small businesses who are like women led or co led who, yeah, that are genuine, like, massive favorites of ours.
That's so funny that they I mean, watch this space for like a Monkey Socks, Nixie
合
co
for a co lab.
Co lab.
Could be a co
lab coming.
So that was really nice.
But then, God, the Pod Squaders.
It was absolutely full of Pod Squaders.
So you could do it, there was a 10 k, a 25 k and a 50 k.
And spoiler, Leanne from Monkey Socks won the 10 k.
She was first.
Oh my god.
I know.
Okay.
But all told, there was about, I think there was just over 300 women.
So it was such an achieve like like even if you've got crowd anxiety, which I definitely do, and I can I definitely didn't enjoy the beginning because I don't enjoy the beginning of Park Rum?
Right?
Just so Yeah.
But you you I don't
enjoy the beginning of, like, my own like, runs on my own.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
There's that thing where everything in you is being like, no, don't.
Maybe don't.
Maybe just go back.
Maybe maybe finish off that other half of the double decker instead.
Don't bother.
是的
Yeah.
But you had you had an army.
You had people.
对。
Yeah.
And I was there with Helen and we we'd had I was able to have a poo.
They had you could go into the toilets in Denby's wine estate.
So they're proper proper normal.
They had like porta loos, but proper loos as well.
Oh, good.
And like along the route, I'm skipping ahead, no, I won't skip ahead.
I'll hold back.
But anyway, so nice toilets.
I was able to have a poo.
Felt all lovely, brilliant.
对。
Mhmm.
Got everything sorted.
Helen was amazing because she was, oh my god, she's the person you need by your side when you're doing a big race because I turned up, one of the requirements was to have a collapsible cup as well as kind of soft water bottles.
对。
Yes.
没错。
Yes.
Like my gunk pot that we
Like your gunk pot.
是的。
Yes.
And my collapsible cup arrived at 6PM on Saturday in Bath when I was in Surrey.
没有。
No.
是的
Yeah.
And but I'd I wasn't that bothered because I I'd taken a third, squishy water bottle and I thought I'll just use that instead.
Also, I knew that you could buy them there.
So I was going to buy one there, but they only took cash.
And then Helen came up behind me like my fairy godmother with five pounds and bought my little collapsible cup for me Aw.
Which was amazing because you don't really want to put Coke into a water bottle particularly.
是的
Yeah.
Good point.
So you have the little cup for squash and for Coke and stuff like that.
And for a big glug when you got to a checkpoint, you don't wanna be sort of, you know, getting tiny little sips that you want to like really whang back 200 mils of Coke really quick.
That's such a good idea.
That's great.
I love that.
Love that.
The sort of, yeah, reusable situation.
Really, really.
好的。
Okay.
It was cutlass.
So it was, yeah, it was brilliant.
So yeah, it was really lovely.
And then without a huge amount of ceremony, I think there there was a a bunch of walkers, Lisa Jackson heading up a kind of bunch of walkers that were leaving at eight in the morning.
And we were all all the runners were going at nine.
So all like ten, twenty five, and 50 were all going together at nine.
And and me and Helen had a very quick chat where I said, what do we do?
What do we do if you wanna go off or if I wanna go off and what do we do about this, that, the other?
And we both sort of said, let's, you know, let's just see how it goes.
Take it as it comes kinda thing.
Cool.
It was just like, I would say, it was just like that the first 25 k of that.
So the first half of it was genuinely the best running I think I've ever had.
It was so so beautiful.
The the like, Sophie was absolutely right.
It was the the landscape and everything around there is gorgeous.
Absolutely gorgeous.
And she'd been very careful to plot it.
Well, you're running on the North Downs Way for much of it or if not all of it.
And a lot of that is through wooded areas.
So even though it was getting up to 28 by the time it finished, you had quite a lot under undercover.
Oh, that's When you when you were out in the open, when there were fields and things, you know, the hills just sort of fell away and very kind of Southwest looking landscape Mhmm.
I thought, actually.
So it felt familiar even though it was the other side of the country.
Just super super beautiful.
Really beautiful.
Like beautiful woods to run through, beautiful scenery, really really gorgeous.
And and the everyone that's run it will know also what the the kind of there were various bits of joy.
One of the bits of joy were the checkpoints of which there were absolutely tons.
And you wanted them to be tons because there was, I think there was seven on the 50 ks because you had like a turnaround one.
They were all incredible.
And they've been manned by, I think mostly by kind of different branches of Pheonix Running.
And so everyone kept on going about I think it was the Bedfordshire one that everyone was like, oh my god.
Wait wait till you get to the Bedfordshire one.
And the thing about the Bedfordshire one, and all the other all of them were amazing.
All of them were amazing.
But Bedfordshire one, it was sliced watermelon.
Oh.
Oh, so good.
That's Doug's dream hangover snack.
It was just incredible.
Because I think watermelon isn't it like a natural electrolyte anyway?
But anyway, it was There we go.
I had about four slices of watermelon.
And then there was this bit, and I was saying to Sophie afterwards, there was a ripple effect.
So there was about six or seven of us at this checkpoint.
And someone just turned around to another one and said, are those Marmite sandwiches?
And then someone else said, are those Marmite sandwiches?
And then me and Helen were like, are those Marmite sandwiches?
And we're like, oh my God.
So that turned out to be the elite snack of the race was
Watermelon Marmite sandwiches.
是的。
Yeah.
Oh, that's That literally sounds like the most perfect combination.
Salt.
盐。
Salt.
Bitter sugar.
对。
Yeah.
Water, you know, liquidy thing.
Amazing.
And then all these checkpoints, they have big jugs of Coke, lemon squash, orange squash, and water.
So you could then just fill up on what you needed, and just beautiful people just saying, can I do this?
Can I do that?
Can I open that?
Can I Like at one point, I think at the midway point, I was like, I can't open my electrolytes?
There was a nice woman there who tore the top off and poured it in for me.
So it was all it was all really lovely.
I misstepped.
On the way back, I completely misstepped at one point.
So there was one checkpoint where I said, I just need to fill up one bottle.
And that was the that ended up being my hardest segment of the race because I then had one and a half, so I had, like, 750 mil.
I was probably I mean, it's not a very long distance between checkpoints, but it might have been, you know, 10 k or something.
But I'd run out within Yeah.
Like five.
Because we I worked out at the end of it.
I was saying to Dave last night, I think that I drank equivalent of six liters in all of that time.
And I had, right up until the time I got home, I had three very small, tiny, hot wheezes.
There was nothing coming out of me.
I do feel you.
I did some wheezes that I could really smell this weekend.
Just little thick, like
that could have been Syrup.
Gel formed.
没错。
Yes.
Exactly.
Yeah.
But yeah, all the way there to the 25 turnaround, it was me and Helen.
And it was absolutely joyful.
It was so lovely and I couldn't have done it without her.
And we just, we walked up the hills, we talked along the straight bits and you can it's so funny looking back at connect, you know, when you get all the charts and things.
Yeah.
So that first half is quite because there is some elevation.
There was some Sophie said, oh, just think of it as my flat run.
And we're like, yeah, alright, Sophie.
Okay.
Woman who's run the length of Ireland, not sure we're gonna
be taking your advice.
没错。
Exactly.
Enjoy that.
So we were like, okay.
There were there were long stretches of flat, but there were also some long, some some some climb y bits.
But we just literally took it in our stride and we just we talked and talked and talked.
I remember at some point telling her the shoe size of my second cousin once removed and thinking, God, it's really odd what you end up talking about when you're with each other for
Really scraping the barrel.
是的。
Yeah.
Oh, I love that.
Shout out to Helen Thorne.
What a lovely, lovely woman who Oh, she was amazing.
I think has become such a natural friend of the pod, friend the friend of women's running, and friend of you and me.
没错。
Absolutely.
Like, she just is, like, such a genuinely lovely woman who stands for all of the same things that we do and who loves running and who loves having a laugh.
Oh god.
That's it.
And if you ever need a good running companion, then a professional comedian should be the top of your list.
Right?
She's good shout.
She has all the fun and she's and she's so funny and it was just so lovely and like it felt like everything I'd forgot she had and everything she'd forgot I had.
So that that felt that was really kind of helpful, really helpful.
Sisterhood.
It was.
Oh, that's so beautiful.
I loved it so much.
So we got So we knew that we were coming.
I started feeling and she knew this as well because I could she could tell I was feeling a bit weird about it.
So we knew that there weren't a huge amount of people running Mhmm.
The 50 k.
So there was a bit where we were kind of I don't know.
I think it was eight k away from the turnaround point.
And we saw the first 50 k come back.
Okay.
Because it's it's a it's an out and back.
And I immediately had a wobble.
This is so weird, isn't it?
I immediately had a wobble and I was like, oh, oh, they're starting to come they're starting to come back.
And we started talking about that and I was like, I don't wanna come in last.
I just don't wanna come in last.
And I could feel myself pick up the pace a bit Yeah.
Because I was just like, I don't want to come in last.
It was and I know it's supposed to be about the time, and I was enjoying myself, but I was still also being very Esther and being a bit self flagellating about it, and just going, can't be last.
I can't be last.
And I don't know when I'm ever gonna shrug that bit of my personality off.
Even with a walk group.
Even with a walk group, it didn't calm your
不是。
No.
Because the walk group was quite small, and I just thought, I don't want to be I don't want to be the last of the runners.
Okay.
So that was my thing.
So then and then they started trickling through, and I started beginning to count them a bit.
And then and so we were talking about that and and then we'd be in the middle of a conversation and I'd say to Helen, oh, I think that might have been like the sixth.
You know, so I could she would have been noticed that I was a bit funny about it and I was being a bit funny about it.
Anyway, so we and all the while, I mean, scenery out of like, I don't know, Turner paintings.
I mean, was just incredible.
Yeah.
So we were having a good time.
And I was being really good with fueling as well.
So I was having the, you know, the Marmite sandwiches and the watermelon, but I was still also, oh, Precision Hydration chews all the fucking way.
And new flavor, watermelon alert.
Oh my god.
Watermelon flavored Precision I Hydration
saw that on your Instagram story and I really need to get back onto the Precision Hydration chews.
I think the thing that threw me about them was I kind of realized that I wasn't actually using them properly because I think you need to have both the chews Yes, you in order to get your 30 grams of carb.
I didn't know that.
I was having one and then being like, these just aren't doing it for me.
I keep hitting the wall.
It's because I was only having 15 grams of carbohydrate every There we go.
Half an hour, forty minutes instead of thirty.
So I was like, why is it that the gel has just put so much more spring in my step?
So, yeah.
There we go.
Word to the wise, if you also only eat one of the chews, you need to have both.
But I do really wanna get back it back back on on board with
them because And when I do like long flat runs, I alternate between gel and chew because the gel lasts longer with me, so it will last me a mile of running.
Whereas a chew, I'm wanging it back after a couple of minutes kind of thing.
But I look forward to it more.
So Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
So I kinda do that.
Anyway, so, yeah, I was doing I was doing the chews, so I had quite a few of those, at least five packets of chews, I think, maybe even six.
So I was doing really well.
Anyway, so we got to the the kind of turnaround point, and I'd I'd kind of gone ahead a bit, because there were bits where she was stopping, Helen was stopping, and I think she was not stopping.
She was walking.
And I think she was slightly on the struggle bus at that point.
And she said to me, so we stopped at the turnaround point where there was lovely toilets, lots of food, lots of help and, you know, all that kind of thing.
And she just said, I'm just I'm just finding it a bit hard.
对。
Mhmm.
And she said, I I think you should go ahead.
And I was like, I had all the conflicting emotions because I thought I've had a really, really, really good first half and most of that is because I've been with Helen.
是的。
Yeah.
But at the same time, I know that I've got this kind of weird, innate feeling in me, is I don't want this to take too long whatever too long is.
And I kind of I just wanna get and I don't know, itchy feet.
I just wanted to go go go go go go go go go.
对。
Mhmm.
I made the decision to sort of take her at her word and I just went off.
So first half was with Helen, second half was with Shox headphones.
What did you listen to?
Shit audiobook.
不是。
No.
不是。
No.
Because what if I name the author?
不行。
No.
I won't name the author.
Just a very fluffy audiobook.
Okay.
Fine.
What you need.
Which is fine.
对。
Yeah.
I I couldn't give the monkeys about what was going on.
And I saw very few people on the way back because on the way out, you are with the tens, the '20 fives, and the fifties.
是的。
Yeah.
And on the way back, it's just the fifties and, you know, there would have been less than a 100 of us doing it and, you know, we'd already passed quite a few.
So it was just like and then then there were the walkers.
So, yeah, it was it was a very empty, thin, like lots of time where I couldn't see someone in front or anyone behind.
Nice or weird?
I would quite that, I think.
是的
Yeah.
对
Yeah.
不错
Nice.
I think there was little bits in the woods.
There was a little woody bit, which is a bit windy, and when Helen and I were coming in the other direction, we'd got slightly lost.
But that little bit on my own was a bit like, creepy.
好
Mhmm.
But then other than that, it was fine.
And it yeah.
So the the second half was infinitely more hard than the first half.
I think it was slightly faster because I had no one to talk to.
I was gonna say that's always the trade off, isn't it?
It's like Mhmm.
It's so lovely running and chatting, but it does obviously slow you down a little bit because you've got to focus on chatting.
是的。
Yeah.
But I completely get you that with that weird balance of the two.
I quite a few of my bath half training sessions I did with Lex because she was training for Brighton at the same time.
对。
Yeah.
But we had a bit of a funny thing where my training plan was really savage all the way through.
Whereas hers started hers was a proper situation where it started gently and then it got progressively more savage.
So we kind of had a weird crossover where for the first couple of months of the year, my runs are really long and she was joining me for the for, like, the last half or the first half, and then it kinda went the other way around.
And I still can't tell you which I prefer because on one hand, it got it was so much it it was nice to just sort of send it and go quickly and just get it done.
是的。
Yeah.
But God, you don't
even notice the time on your feet when you're chatting to somebody.
对。
Yeah.
And so it's How
was it?
可能
It's probably
nice to have a game of two halves.
You get to experience a little bit of both where you get to get your itchy feet out, get your zoomies out, but you also got to while away the hours doing what all of that stuff is all about really.
对。
Yeah.
I do.
I I think actually it ended up being the perfect the perfect way round as well.
对。
Mhmm.
Because I think if if we'd have switched it so that we were talking on the way back, I I'm not sure there'd be an enormous amount of running.
Because it was so hard.
Obviously, it got later in the day.
The sun had fully risen.
It was very, very hot.
是的。
Yeah.
And lots of us were struggling.
And it's really when I look at Garmin Connect where they show you the graph of run, walk, it's much more spaced out in the in the second half.
Like, in the first half, I've got like big stretches of running, short stretches of walking, and there's quite and that sort of not regular because it's all dependent on where the hills were.
But in the second half, it's like, run walk, run walk, run walk.
是的。
Yeah.
And bit, so I was just like, in my head, was like, right, just run.
I was fartlecking.
I was like, run to that tree, walk for a bit, run to that.
So I was doing quite a lot of that.
So it was really, really hard.
I felt like I had to massively dig deep on the way back.
But I'm kind of really pleased that I did because otherwise I wouldn't have felt like it was a race.
Like, it was too it was too easy.
It was too nice, the first half.
是的。
Yeah.
And somehow, I needed to have something that was, like, punishing, which
I it kinda get what you mean.
It's nice to feel like you've left it all out there.
是的。
And Yeah.
Also my side worked.
对。
Yeah.
I think that sounds like a really it does actually genuinely sound like a really nice balance, and I'm proud of you for also because I know sometimes you almost find it a little easier to do the punish yourself, challenge yourself, fasty bits.
Proud of you that you also took at least half of the time to take in your surroundings, have a chat, enjoy it, so it didn't just feel like another training run where you've got your head down and you're and you're going for it, but that it felt like an experience and worth it that you were there in the beautiful scenery with other lovely women and Yeah.
Think Yeah.
That sounds And you know, like as we ran, every time we met people coming in the other direction, it was like we and they would say, well done.
Aw.
You know, and and if you passed someone, if you overtook someone, there was a well done, keep going.
You know, we all said it no matter where you were or or which bit of the race you were doing.
And that was just really, really lovely.
It was just really lovely.
It was so it felt so supportive.
Like, all of it felt so supportive.
And, oh my god.
是的。
Yeah.
The final bit the final bit was, like, really, really hard because Yeah.
Because my watch had clicked over into 30 miles 50 k sometime before the end.
对。
And Yeah.
And it'd be 32 in a bit, didn't it?
Looking at you.
32 in
a bit.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
And there was a bit where you're you there's a lovely bit where you enter into the vineyard and you know that's the last little bit.
So you're like, right, brilliant.
But my GPX didn't quite match the course directions with on the little sort of signage.
And so there was a horrible moment where you you I could see the finish, and I had to run past it and run around another circle and come down.
And it was like, oh my god.
Stop doing this to me.
是的。
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And I forgot to say.
But anyway, I did that, so it's fine.
But I'm allowed to say, because I've been given permission by Helen, that this was the funniest bit.
So we were on the way out within about I think we'd probably got past the 10 k stage, maybe the 15 k stage or something.
But either way, when it got to the kind of, oh, we're getting into the chunky Mars now, Helen could not stop farting.
It was just just a constant she got I think after the the first time, she went, oh, really sorry about that.
And I was like, I think we're just gonna have to, like, not say sorry
for things like
this is just going to happen.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
But slightly worrying because you're like, I'm now on 32 miles.
I don't know what's going to occur.
对。
Yeah.
You know?
And with every step as well, it's like, like, the way back in, just going, oh god.
It makes me think of, you know, on Mario Kart where you get the little toadstool, but you have to, like, press to use it.
So it's like Yes.
As you go along.
That is it.
That's yeah.
That's exactly it.
Didn't feel like a speed boost, but yeah, it was absolutely that.
Fair play.
There's something about the heat as well, like, this morning.
Cause you've done 30 miles.
I think it's fair to I mean, I'm incredibly impressed by your sphincter that you if you don't mind me saying, if you manage to not shit while doing those farts because this morning, on my run, it was only seven k, and I I had to focus the first two kilometers because I knew it was only two kilometers to the first public loop.
Literally within the first few 100 meters, was like, oops.
I'm going to shit my pants.
I should have thought about that before I left, but oh, well, let's go for it.
没有。
No.
It was only two k until the first public glue, but then it had a big sign saying, unfortunately, closed due to vandalism.
知道。
Know.
What did you do?
I had a horrible moment and I text Doug, and then he actually said, no risk, no reward.
And it spurred me on and I carried on and somehow I survived.
And I I and then it it did that slightly weird thing where you think, what's actually happened there?
Where you don't need it by the end of the run and you think
When it's gone back up.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
But it did it did rear its ugly head later Oh.
没错。
Oh, yeah.
Sorry.
God, this is a trigger warning for this section of the pod.
哦。
Oh.
Well, so you really did get to know Helen on another level.
You became fart friends by the end.
Fart friends.
对。
Yes.
Which is another level.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
So that felt really nice.
是的。
Yeah.
It was just but the whole thing was just wonderful.
It was just so lovely.
I finished what was unlike Trail Escape that I did as well, which I think was had been slightly bigger, When I finished this one, I finished on my own.
So I felt I was celebrated, like, uniquely on my own and, you know, was given a medal, was given a goody bag filled with everything that you need.
Everything.
There was like a there was a protein milkshake, chocolate protein milkshake.
So immediately Neck
that immediately.
对。
Yeah.
There was, like, there was a big stand filled with, like, you know, squash and snacks, but also glasses of champagne.
