And it was bonkers.
We arrived at this festival.
I think we got there about midday, and we didn't get into the festival site and start putting our tent up and stuff till three.
So it was a three hour process of of getting through, you know, tickets and security and getting in.
There was a woman going, don't push through the bog.
Oh, god.
It was awful.
We had, like, one of those trolley things.
There was just, like, a graveyard of the troll of trolleys that had been lost to the bog.
No.
It was bad.
It was so bad.
And and we were all just being absolutely pissed on.

We also talk about gym etiquette.
Can you actually make friends in the gym?
There's also a bit of chat on the PMDD side of things, which is worth another pod, I think, and a bit more on the Raynaud side of things.

In the room.
对。
Yeah.
You alright?
I'm okay.
I'm sorry that I had I'm gonna full be honest to the listener.
I just had a a prerecording cry.
I'm just very overwhelmed by the amount that's going on with work at the moment.
But then I think also, I had a week well, first of all, I don't know about you, but I find this period really really difficult.
I know a lot of people love September because it's like fresh start, back to school vibes.
I've always found I have that in January.
I quite like January for that reason.
But I really really struggle with September.
I remember being like really low last September as well.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I find it so hard because I'm such a summer person.
Like, I love the sun and my mood is very dependent on the weather.
And I I just I have this horrid feeling of, like, heaviness when you know you're moving out and it's almost like you've done your last bits of fun, end of the summer holidays.
I still feel like in that mindset.
In fact, I kinda preferred it when we used to go to school.
Because then at least, you know, you've got a new haircut you can sort of show everyone or
对。
Yeah.
There is something, isn't there?
I think that I don't think you ever lose, like, exam dread month and Yeah.
You know, that and the end of August feels really, really tough with the back to school because yes.
好的。
Okay.
So there was something that you'd look forward to.
You go and see your friends and stuff, but the dread of it, the dread of shining your shoes and sharpening your pencils and getting everything ready and oh, yeah.
It's it's really, really hard.
I I really I totally get that.
And I am not particularly a summer person.
I've always sort of dreaded it and I don't like the heat.
And I would say I am more of an autumnal person, but I have that exact same feeling Mhmm.
Exact same feeling of just going, oh, fuck.
Here we go.
You know, yesterday, were talking about Halloween.
I was like, oh, god.
不要。
No.
I don't want it.
I don't want it.
Just No.
I I feel exactly the same.
I'm trying really hard and I keep thinking of all the things that I do enjoy about this time of year and being like, okay, there's gonna be crunchy leaves and rugby matches and Guinness in pubs and roasts.
And I keep thinking about all the things that I'm trying to kind of look forward to, but I'm really struggling.
I think the only thing that's actually keeping me going is genuinely Dublin.
Like, having having something to just get really stuck into is is helpful.
对。
Mhmm.
But yeah, everything feels a little bit relentless.
And I I will also start by saying that I feel like, and I know this is a feeling that I need to like get rid of because it was always gonna be the case.
But I just feel like I've let myself down and maybe I've let everybody down a little bit because I just feel so rubbish.
I've had I've had like a week where I I have I I mean, I ran yesterday but I had like a good week where I didn't run right smack bang in the peak middle of marathon training.
And I know that happens all the time for people with, like, injury and but I had basically a couple of days where I wasn't feeling a 100% and I just thought, I don't think it's a good idea to.
And then I went to this festival And there was no way, like, I couldn't have run there.
And so, yeah, I think it was like six days or something where I didn't do any exercise at all.
Why is that letting anyone down?
That's not letting anyone down.
I think I feel like I really want to take it seriously and do it.
And I know we keep saying, like, that it's just a, you know, that it was never gonna be ideal circumstances and we were just gonna go for it and do our best.
But I still can't help but just feel like there's this little voice in the back of my mind that's got a bit of a goal.
And and now I I sort of feel like I I guess I also just feel a bit of that lack of sense of discipline and a bit of loss of like, where do I go now?
Because you know when you sort of want to do things perfectly and then you don't, and so then you just want to throw the whole rule book out kind of Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I've sort of got a bit of that.
Like, I'm trying to pick back up, but because I'm following my watch and my watch now sees that I haven't run for a week, it's obviously going, oh, okay.
Hold your horses on what you were gonna do, and it's paired back all my runs and made them much shorter and more gentle, which I appreciate is probably a good strategy.
But also I'm looking at it and going, what are you doing?
Because that's not enough time.
Like, that's not if I don't do that run this week, then that's not enough time.
对。
Yeah.
So now I feel a little bit out on a limb and like I'm making up as I'm going along because I I can't do 16 k or whatever it's told me to do this week.
I have to crack back on and do longer distances Yeah.
Because I'm gonna run out of time.
But I just don't I don't know what I should be doing kind of thing.
对。
Yeah.
But I think I would say after that, after your confession.
That's tough listening to it and mulled it over.
You say three Hail Marys, and you remember that in doing this podcast, we're trying our utmost not to be inspiring but to be relatable.
Right?
Because so and losing a week of your training plan is, I think, and I feel like I would have a chorus of women behind me, infinitely relatable.
It happens to everyone.
Because think about when we're all training for stuff.
We train either through the summer holidays or we're training over Christmas.
A week will fall off without even thinking about it, won't it?
对。
Yeah.
And that is not your fault.
It's absolutely not your fault.
We've also we've been give we've given ourselves training plans that are actually quite short.
So, you know, there's there's not a huge amount to play with.
不是。
No.
That's why I'm worried.
Don't worry about it.
You've done it before.
You can do it again.
And you're in a fitter place than you were the last time that we did it.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, you are.
Hugely so.
So Yeah.
Don't think you have anything to worry about.
I think I would I really would suggest though, if you're worried about the training plan that you're looking at right now, do send it on to one of the lovely running coaches that we have and just get them to tweak it a bit so it fits more what you'd like to do.
对。
Yeah.
Well, the problem is is that I liked this to start with but now I'm not liking it so much is that I can't see further than two weeks ahead.
对。
Yeah.
It's not great.
It's a good
And so, Now we're getting to the crunch time.
It's actually not great because I have no idea what this plan thinks my longest long run's gonna be.
I have no idea, like, whether I can afford to do a drop down, for example, this week because, like, it just when's it gonna make me do my longest long ones?
Is it just gonna cut into my taper?
Is it gonna, like, what's the plan?
Because it doesn't seem to have any sense of urgency of, like, when I need to be getting these done.
对。
Yeah.
So I've kind of been not following it for the last couple of weeks anyway, and I've been doing the easies and the tempos and stuff that it's been setting me.
对。
Yeah.
But then I've been running longer than the long runs have actually been because I just have been feeling a bit uneasy about how short they still seem to be with only, like, a couple of months to go.
Because I'm just worried that maybe it doesn't know what a taper is and it's gonna be like just expecting me to do my 30 kilometers or whatever, like, a week before or something.
Because it's like, how can I still be how can I be dropping down when the most I've done so far is 22 or whatever?
对。
Yeah.
And then the awful thing about not having that flexibility or being able to see that far ahead is you can't sort of yeah.
You can't tweak.
You can't think to yourself, actually, I'd much rather, for my own peace of mind, I'd much rather go over 20 miles for my longest run, or Yeah.
I'd I'd rather have two twenty milers as my longest runs, or I'd rather not go above 18, or any of those, and you can't you can't predict what it's gonna
对。
Yeah.
I honestly, yeah, go and speak to Laura or Tina or or anyone, I think, if you can just take all of that and just give you your last few weeks and just say that actually this is realistic.
对。
Yeah.
And these you know, and then you can talk through your goals with them.
对。
Yeah.
And and say, actually, you know, here's my a goal if I'd have had a sixteen week lead up.
This is my b.
This is my c.
对。
Yeah.
What can we do in this time frame?
I, you know, I think the very worst that could possibly happen, honestly, is that you'll finish it.
I think the very worst thing that could happen is that you'll finish it in not your a gold time.
对。
Yeah.
And your a goal was from a few months back.
I don't know what your a goal is because you've not said it to me.
But I think the very worst is that you won't get that.
I think you can expect now to complete this marathon.
I personally think that you can expect to complete this marathon quicker than your last.
I think so too.
I think unless I have another setback, unless something happens like, you know, I get ill or injured or something, then I do think if I just crack on now and don't panic, then I definitely can can expect to finish it.
And bearing in mind your level of fitness, which is which is just hugely improved since then, bearing in mind you're in incredible half marathon time, and bearing in mind your consistency.
Your consistency is amazing.
Like you're worried now about a week out, But I mean, you know, go back a couple of years and, you know
对。
Yeah.
确实。
That's true.
Running once a week was a, you know, that that might have happened, mightn't it?
对。
Yeah.
That is very true.
Like, actually, I oh my god.
I'm pretty sure that I've done a half before basically just doing the long runs on the weekends because I couldn't be asked to do any of the ones in between.
I think I think you're right.
I think I have become a little bit it's like, it's a weird, it's a blessing and a curse, isn't it?
It's like a weird thing where you start to like you start to see how brilliant running really is when it all clicks into place.
对。
Yeah.
But then you get so scared about doing anything that's gonna jeopardize that because you finally reach that point where you're like, okay, like, sometimes it feels nice now.
And also, I feel like I can do things and not be out of action all day.
You know, you start it starts to kind of click into place some of that stuff with the fitness that, like, I wouldn't have dreamt of a few years ago.
And I was just felt like I was trudging through custard to try and get to that kind of point.
对。
Yeah.
But now that you're there, it's like, but if I miss this single run or if I don't go as quickly as I thought or if I get ill or then it is it just, am I back to square one kinda thing?
对。
Yeah.
And you're not at all.
You're back to square seven, aren't you?
It's kind of
对。
Yeah.
Because you've done so much work.
You've done so much work.
And, yeah, I honestly think you could you could run it uncomfortably in a couple of weeks and you'd be quicker than you did London.
Comfortably, you'd you'd run it, you know, okay.
But I think, you know, with a with a little bit more of a zhuzh, you could run it slightly more comfortably.
对。
Yeah.
And that's what we wanted.
That was always the a goal.
This is a trip that is about love and joy and fun and Guinness.
Not Yes, about coming home on the you know, having been pictured on the podium or something.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
好的。
Okay.
是的。
And yeah.
And actually, genuinely, I'm looking forward to cracking back on with the training now.
Like, I I thought that I wanted to have a break and to and actually, I just felt a little bit, this makes me feel a bit worried about myself as I'm saying it out loud.
I felt anxious having a break from it all.
And I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I don't know whether that means I've become a bit obsessive or whether that means, no, that's okay.
You just are enjoying it.
对。
Yeah.
Maybe it's a bit of both.
我是说
I mean
对。
Yeah.
I I understand that feeling.
I've had that feeling quite often.
是的。
Yeah.
You know, and we've both done it.
You know, we obsess over our plans or whatever, and then you look at things that are coming up in the diary and you go, oh god, what I can't run on Thursday.
So I'm gonna have to do it Friday, and I'm gonna have to try and fit it in with this and that and da da da.
And then, yeah.
And if you're forced through whatever reason to not be able to do the movement that you wanted to do, yeah, I think it can make And it's it's not just anxiety, is it?
Because it's a little spiral because obviously the running is the thing that's a bit of a brain reset as well.
And so personally speaking, if I miss a couple of days of running, which I'm doing more and more often because I'm only doing three days a week running, that if I miss two days in a row, I am an absolute monster on the second day.
对。
Right.
Me too.
And I don't know how to it's actually like a self esteem thing that starts to get me.
I don't feel like I'm too irritable.
I think I feel like I'm just a bit of a piece of shit if I've not gone for a run for a couple of days.
And that I do think is something that we need to we need to manage, don't we?
Because everything else about this strategy of running three times a week is working really well for you.
Like, you've stayed injury free.
You've managed to do really, really well with all of the goals that you've set for yourself in that time.
It feels like you're being a little bit gentler on your body.
But how can we manage those feelings that come with the you're so used to running being your outlet because
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
It's really bad.
And I did find, like, towards the second week of holiday, like I said to you on the last pod, like, it's been hard because of no gym.
And so I'm kind of at peace with the three runs a week thing because of the injury, because of whatever.
I especially like it.
Actually, weirdly, the bit that was complaining about with Laura's training plan, I was I was worried about the much longer midweek runs, but that it obviously, much easier to cope with when you're not doing four runs a week.
So Yeah.
Actually doing seven miles on a Wednesday is kind of fine.
But I think yeah.
I think I found it really hard on holiday to not have the other the the gym outlet.
So I was doing, you know, doing a couple of press ups on the floor of the bedroom.
It's just not it just doesn't cut it in the same way as going to the gym.
So I've been to the gym.
We got back Thursday night, and we're recording.
Was Wednesday.
I've been to the gym three times since then because I love it so much.
And each time I've gone there, felt like hugging the building and giving a little kiss.
对。
Yeah.
I feel that too.
I've really I haven't been for, like, a week or two, and I've really missed it.
There is something about the gym as well that for me, as a person who works from home, all of this can get quite lonely sometimes and you can sort of slightly feel a lack of structure, a lack of accountability, a lack of like, this sort of feeling that you're, it's heavy, I think, when you're solely responsible for your routine and what you're gonna get done that day.
And there is something about going to a gym class or even just going and lifting some weights in the gym that makes me feel like, I guess, a little dose of being part of the real world again.
对。
Yeah.
Somebody else decides, okay, for this next hour, you're just gonna be doing this HIIT class or doing this.
And it's it's so nice.
It's really nice.
对。
Yeah.
I had to think went in this morning and I was just looking at people as I went in and there were, you know, it's quite it's a big gym, the pure gym I go to.
And there's a number of, obviously, familiar faces.
I've been going there for two years.
So familiar faces, no one that I would say hello to.
Right?
But in my head, I'm like, oh yeah, there's the there's the lovelies or there's there's like an there's an older lady who goes who always wears capri pants and a matching top.
She always looks fabulous.
Mhmm.
And she's always there early doors.
I think she goes there five days a week.
And so she's really on it and she reads her she reads the news while she's like on a treadmill or something.
I think she's absolutely brilliant and I always see her.
So I saw her and I just and I as I walked in I thought, maybe I've got to a point where I can kind of could I could I acknowledge?
Could I say hello?
I haven't But quite got there there and there were a number of other people as well that I was like, oh, I recognize you and I recognize you and I recognize you.
And I don't say hello to anyone, but there is that feeling of familiarity and a sudden feeling as I walked in this morning of, if that's how I feel about other people, they might think it about me.
They might.
They might go ask you that woman.
And do you know what?
Even further than that, I sometimes wonder whether people know what it is that is is my thing based on what I'm doing at the gym.
Like, do you ever think, oh, people must go, there's that runner.
因为,
Because,
对。
yeah.
I do because of all the leg exercises.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
Like, there's this guy, and I know he's a runner because and I'm making huge stereotypes here.
But, like, looking at him and his build and stuff, I would hazard a guess that he's an ultra runner.
好。
Okay.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Like, he's a bit of a spindly boy, but also, like, clearly, like, super muscle y.
对。
Yeah.
And especially in the legs and stuff.
And he wears a precision fuel and hydration cap.
Ah, yes.
There you go.
And he is always doing, like, Bulgarian split squats.
没错。
Yes.
And all sorts of, like, single leg exercises Yeah.
Core exercises.
Like, whenever I look at him, I'm like, I know what you're doing, and I know that we're here for the same things.
And it's also nearly got to a point with me as well where I just want to be like, what are you training for?
What are you up to?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
And I think you're right.
I think we should.
I think we should all be a bit more like, my my friend Rob recently, he got someone in the gym in the gym who'd obviously been doing this with him for a while, asked him out for a coffee and he was like, oh my god.
She obviously fancies me and doesn't realize that I'm gay.
And then she, on the coffee, was like, oh my god.
Here's this guy that I'm dating or whatever.
And he was like, okay.
I didn't I didn't pull the wool over her eyes.
But just the fact that he was like, so she obviously just decided to like ask me for a coffee because we go to the same gym at the same time.
Like, how how cool is that?
Like, how bold And is I think we should all do that more.
对。
Yeah.
I don't know how to.
Just Neither do I.
It did it did make me feel I just I just felt happy.
I mean, felt really happy going back, which I would never have said even a year ago.
But I felt really happy going back.
I felt happy in the knowledge that because I I often walk around I walk around Bath.
I this is my actually, is a bit of a secret.
I have this thing where I'm absolutely convinced that no one recognizes me ever.
Like walking to school, I don't think any of the school moms recognize me.
Going to work, I didn't think anyone recognized me.
I just don't think that anyone and Bath is tiny.
So I think I have a very unrecognizable face.
No.
Can I just say immediately wrong?
Walking through where you live with you is like, you're gonna be stopped every five minutes.
There is a bit like that.
Not not because of weird fame, but only because of neighbors.
但是……
But the
对。
Yeah.
But there is something I don't know what it is.
I don't know why I have this innate belief that people don't know who I am.
But I I do think it's something to do with being like, actually at heart, a very shy person.
And so when I walk around, I'm a bit heads down.
And I think the shyness can be, as shy people will know, occasionally taken as being, like, rude or cold or offish.
And so I think that means that's why you don't get the waves and the hellos and the smiles from people because basically you're not offering them in the first place because you're just like, oh, no one knows who I am.
I'm just going to shuffle through the school playground or I'm going to shuffle into the gym or I'm going to and today was just one of those days where I just thought, no.
But a couple of these people do know who I am.
I have been coming for two years.
They want me do recognize me.
对。
Yeah.
他们
They
definitely do.
Well, so tell me, you've been basically, that's my update.
I'm I did I did have a lovely lovely weekend.
I feel like I was also a bit negative to you about it.
I was like, but it it was amazing.
I'll tell you about that and then I really really wanna hear about
好。
Yeah.
Go on.
Your Tell me running and and what you've been up to.
But me and Doug went to Lost Village Festival, which was so much fun.
So where is this?
It's in Lincoln, which that wasn't so fun.
It was quite a trek.
And then it also I mean, if you're not based in The UK, then maybe you don't know what just happened.
But we all sort of experienced a bit of a collective trauma this weekend where it's all been so gorgeous and lovely.
And we've had about seven heat waves over the summer and it's been there have been some ups and downs.
Obviously, there have been some things where it's been really hot and we've been struggling to sleep and but in general, it has been really nice.
And I think I basically just, like, completely forgotten, like, what it's like to have to wear a coat or bring an umbrella or even bring a jumper anywhere because it's been a bit like living in living in the South Of France where you can just I
saw that about socks.
I'm like, what?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Think about that.
对。
Yeah.
It's it's been it's been Birkenstocks and t shirts all summer.
确实。
It has.
And I don't think any of us have had to think at all about, like, wrapping up or anything.
And then suddenly, this weekend, I was looking I was going to this festival.
I've been looking as well at all the, like, festivals that people have been at all summer and been like, oh god.
对。
Yeah.
It looks glorious.
It's just been so lovely.
Like, what a joy to be able to to camp and not have to worry about rain.
Then I saw the weather forecast and was like, oh.
And it was getting closer and closer and I thought, oh, maybe I do maybe I am starting to actually believe that it might be like that now.
Because for a while I was in full denial.
I was like, no.
Keep saying the weather's gonna break and it doesn't.
对。
Yeah.
And then we just had thunderstorms, didn't we, from like Thurs Thursday was hideous.
Friday was alright, but then it rained a bit in the afternoon, I think.
Saturday was like, just rained all day.
And Sunday was nice until the evening when it also just went full thunderstorms again.
And it was bonkers.
We arrived at this festival and we waited for two I think we got there about midday, and we didn't get into the festival site and start putting our tent up and stuff till three.
So it was a three hour process of of getting through, you know, tickets and security and getting in and queuing and stuff.
And there was a woman going, don't push through the bog.
Oh god.
It was awful.
We had like one of those trolley things that was just like a graveyard of the trolleys that had been lost to the bog.
No.
It was bad.
It was so bad.
And and we were all just being absolutely pissed on.
Like so so so soggy to a point that I felt really smug about my lovely Lululemon coat that I was like, oh, this is gonna be Was
that the see through one?
不是。
No.
Oh, no.
That one was quite cool.
Doug bought me that from Amazon and that was the best that was the most protective protective thing thing that that I I had.
是的。
Had.
Not Not to slag off Lululemon, but it turns out, if you stand outside in one of their coats for more than about an hour in the pissing rain, you will soak entirely through to the bone.
Nothing.
It was just like wearing a pillowcase by the end.
It was just doing absolutely nothing.
But I don't think I'm even slagging it off because I think there were a lot of people in much more, like, I don't know, hardcore, like, sort of proper crag hopper or North Face.
And even then, they were all like, they're they're they're done.
It's Rain gets sat in rain.
对。
Yeah.
So, yeah, that was awful.
And then we got in, and then the sun came out as we kind of arrived and put our tent up and got ready and went into the festival and it was so lovely and we got a drink and it's such a cool festival.
It's kind of mainly like dance music, but kind of disco and house.
Like, it's quite fun.
And and everybody's very silly and whimsical.
Like, there's a big emphasis on kind of dressing up and and stuff there and it's great.
And all the stages are sort of sets.
They've designed them really cleverly.
So they it it's really cool.
对。
Yeah.
And so we just spent a few hours just wandering around and getting familiar with it.
And it was there's all these kind of, you know, a telephone booth and you pick up the phone and there's someone talking to you on the other end.
And, like, they've got a betting shop with a woman who's entirely in character and you can place bets on things.
And there's like a pawn shop where you can swap weird stuff and they'll give you a weird thing back.
It's all really, like, cool and whimsical and weird and you can cut So we were loving that.
But then just as we kind of let our guards down and we didn't have the coats with us anymore because we thought we'd survived it Yeah.
It just suddenly started pelting again just as we were going back to the tent.
And then lightning and thunder happened.
And lightning struck our campsite and all the festoon lights went out.
No.
So that was really terrifying.
And Yeah.
People were, like, running and screaming.
And it was a bit like, oh my gosh.
And in the end, we kind of waited it out.
And I think the festival, obviously also realized that they kind of need to take it a bit more seriously and not just be like, oh, well, just a bit of weather.
So then they put a thing in place and it meant that on Sunday when we had another thunderstorm, they actually they paused festival.
Like, we were in the middle of watching a DJ set, and then it was like, the festival is paused due due to lightning strikes.
We were like Shit.
Oh my god.
The other issue with that was I don't think they'd really worked out what to do or what to tell people, because it's in the woods.
So obviously, everybody knows you shouldn't really be near too near trees.
对。
Yeah.
They didn't say, like, so please go to back to your tent, or please go to an open area, or something.
So everybody just again was, like, running and screaming.
Oh god.
Oh god.
It was great fun.
And there were some real moments of, like, absolute joy and, like, lovely silliness, like, that after they canceled the festival because of the rain, it was only for about ten minutes.
We all went and and and one of the, like, disco DJs that was playing just played It's Raining Men, and then everyone was dancing in the rain and singing along.
And so there were some really lovely, like, moments, but it was quite brutal.
It just rained the whole time.
Everything was soaked.
对。
Yeah.
I feel like me and Doug are quite seasoned campers, and we'd, like, bin bagged everything.
We've got a really good tent.
We had, like, proper sensible shoes.
We're not, you know, not sort of silly or naive to the weather.
But even my big I've got, like, a big waterproof sort of rucksack that I bought for a sailing holiday.
So it's literally meant to withstand being in the sea.
是的。
Yeah.
And and it my pyjamas were, like, soaked through through the waterproof bag.
哦。
Oh.
So it was just it was really hard to, like, maintain a level of positivity all the time.
But we did our last
Did you cut it short or did you
没有。
No.
I was really proud of ourselves.
We cut it a little bit short in the during the, like, final like, it was Ezra Collective were headlining right at the end on the last night, and everyone was dancing and they were all playing their brass and and they kept being like, take this joy home with you.
And I did turn to Doug and I went, I haven't got any more joy.
And then I had this sort of moment where I just was like, I'm gonna cry and I can't just stand in the crowd and cry.
I was like, I think I just need to slightly call it and go back to the tent and have a have an earlier night tonight and get up and pack up and go in the morning.
So we cut it short by about an hour, but we didn't leave the festival or anything.
And I was really really proud of us because quite a lot of
people did.
是的。
Yeah.
Good for you.
Good for you.
对。
Yeah.
It was it was
because my god, was looking at at at pictures from sort of the aftermath of Reading and Leeds.
Oh my gosh.
It was honestly bon it was bonkers.
I do think as well, the whole time I was like, this does feel quite naive because I kept seeing stuff that was like, oh, it's been such a dry summer that we're not having fireworks.
It's been such a dry summer that we we don't need to you don't need to, you know, bring sensible shoes, but you don't need to worry about mud because it's not gonna I feel like we stupidly sort of lulled ourselves into a false false sense of security.
The mud was like up It was like going over the top of your shoes.
哦。
Oh.
真是……
It was
Oh, god.
Awful.
The bog consumed us completely.
Nasty.
哦。
Oh.
But it was great.
哦。
Oh.
We met some really lovely people.
That was mine and Doug's main mission was because we were going just the two of us.
We were like, oh, it'd be so nice to meet some people and like Yeah.
And and just, you know, have some silly fun chats.
And we did.
We we made some friends with this lovely gang who I went up to them on the first night because, you know, people have those big sort of totems and signs and stuff at festivals and like flags and things.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
They just had one that just said Katie Price with a picture of Katie Price, and I loved it.
You are a fan of Pricey,
aren't And I love the Pricey.
So I went up to them and we chatted to them, and then we ended up Doug and I bought walkie talkies in case we lost each other.
Good plan.
对。
Yeah.
And so we gave them one of them, and then we had each other on the walkie talkies for the rest of the weekend, which was so sweet.
So there were some really funny, silly moments of, like, of joy.
And actually, I will say for I know as as runners, we all love a bit of food.
The food was so good, and I ate
Was it?
So many carbs.
Oh, amazing.
Had cheese toasties.
I had ice creams.
I had chips.
I had all sorts because I did 40 to 50,000 steps every day for the whole place.
I am gonna say that I don't actually feel too bad about Yeah.
Taking that time off running because
That's a lot of exercise.
It was quite a lot.
对。
Yeah.
And then the dancing on top.
Right?
And then the dancing on top.
And I also, I felt quite smug because I felt like as somebody who has the knowledge of a of a, you know, ultra I've I've never done one, but I'm talking to one right now, to an ultra runner, and I'm surrounded by ultra runners all the time.
I brought Trek bars, banana bread, and dates that I just shoved some peanut butter into.
Oh, I was good
popping them the whole weekend, and I think it really was keeping me going.
对。
Yeah.
Oh And I also got electrolytes and all sorts of things that I wouldn't know anything about if I hadn't if I didn't do this job.
So
Oh, and if you hadn't done that, you would have been on the side of the road flapping around like a fish, wouldn't you?
Think so.
I think I really did save myself.
So I'm actually I'm not feeling too bad.
But I'm also I think I'm also partly not feeling too bad was because I didn't go too bonkers because Yeah.
I did kind of have at the back of my mind the whole time that I have to run a marathon and be a human being this week.
So Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So that was me.
And as a result, I've done no running apart from a little six k yesterday to get myself back in the swing.
And I'm about to go and do an interval session after this.
But tell me what has been going on with you?
Well, we've I mean, we covered the holiday stuff.
I mean, I tell you what has happened in the interim in the kind of the week that we've not spoken is that so I was I was still in Devon last time we spoke, and I was kind of I was happy with running.
It was fine.
And it was quite nice.
I did see something on Instagram recently where or was it Instagram?
It might have actually been it might have actually been printed matter.
Something that was just saying that just confirmed what I believe, which is if you're if you're within kind of unfamiliar terrain and elevation, then don't worry about the complicated bits of your training plan.
Like, do the distance.
Don't worry about doing the speedy bits and whatever.
好的。
Okay.
So I was really pleased to read that from someone that has much more kind of experience and worth than I do.
So that made me feel a bit better because I was really worried actually coming back.
So I was thinking about I mean, and this is, you know, speaking as someone that's trained for an ultra but not particularly well.
But, you know, a couple of like, the long runs that I did there, there were there was quite a bit of of walking and hiking involved because of the elevation.
And I realized that my head was going back to kind of couple of years ago thinking, well, I haven't actually done it then, have I, if I did walking in it?
Which is bonkers.
不是。
No.
That's not we're training for a different thing.
If I was training for an ultra, then I wouldn't think that.
对。
No.
But because we're training for a road marathon where my intention is to run the whole thing, that that's suddenly, I was back to square one again with the kind of, you know, how I viewed my training and myself.
But and and, I mean, the lack of gym didn't help because I didn't feel I didn't feel strong.
And lots of those runs felt really, really hard because of elevation, because of terrain, you know, whatever.
And then by about the time that I spoke to you, which is at the beginning of last week, I felt absolutely miserable.
The running wasn't going very well.
I didn't have anything in between, gym wise, really, to kind of perk me up.
And there was a day, I think it was like Tuesday, I just felt so low.
And I guess it's because I could see the end of the holiday.
对。
Yeah.
It felt like it had gone too quickly and there was, you know, there's a blessing and curse about going back to a place that we've been to before.
There's the familiarity of it so you feel like you can relax.
But as per our last conversation on the pod, I don't really know how to relax.
对。
Yeah.
Like, so I was zhuzhing people out the door every day.
Come on, let's do something.
Let's do something.
Let's do something.
And I'm really pleased we did because looking back on it, the holiday was filled with different kind of experiences and things.
I'm I'm and and everyone was happy, and everyone enjoyed what we did.
But but the familiarity also brings a kind of a sense of, you know, there's it's not as exciting as a brand new holiday.
And so I found that really hard.
And then my period came on Wednesday or Thursday.
And in a way, that was a relief because I looked back and I was like, ugh.
And there was a bit we were walking into town and I said to Dave, oh, I've got my period this morning.
And he was like, oh, okay.
And I said and I said, this is very throwaway.
Maybe I should I won't say the full sentence, but I was like, this is this explains why I felt so low on Monday.
And and he was like, oh, does that happen every time?
And then I thought, well, yeah, it does.
It does.
But I I don't know.
I I felt really weird about it because I suddenly I started kind of mapping, I don't know, I I started looking back in hindsight, which is never a good thing, but looking back at I haven't had that many periods this year.
So I think that's probably my fourth out of how many should I have had?
七次?
Seven?
八次?
Eight?
对。
Yeah.
So I wasn't expecting it.
I was like, it came kind of unexpectedly.
But it's definitely the sort of PMT stuff is definitely definitely worse than it's ever been throughout my kind of much more fertile life.
And the kind of the mood is so significantly decreased.
And unfortunately, because the period's unpredictable, I can't tell.
If my mood is to yeah.
I can't think to myself, oh, my mood is low because my period is due.
I just think that's my life.
You can't it's very difficult to see yourself out of it, isn't it, to have that top down view and think, oh, I'm just low for a for a short period of time.
It's probably hormonal.
When you're in it, you're in it and you can't see the the The
wooden you can't
是的。
see Yeah.
You can't see I I actually am I'm so with you at the moment.
I think ever since I had my coil replaced, I've been really struggling.
And I've sort of had periods back, but again, they're like really unpredictable.
So like, I had one maybe a month, maybe after I first had it fitted.
And then a month later, so like, this was a couple of weeks ago, I felt really low.
And I was like, oh, here we go.
This is because I'm getting periods again now.
And then it never happened and it never happened and it was awful.
It was like that feeling where it was like, oh, I felt like I needed this release but it just never happened.
对。
Yeah.
And then it happened when we were at the festival and I was like, oh, okay.
But I still yeah.
I I feel exactly the same.
I still don't know I don't know when they're coming.
I they don't quite make sense.
They're not quite, like they're definitely not twenty eight days apart.
And then it's hard to tell any period of lowness.
I'm like, is this me?
Or is this
对。
Yes.
没错。
Exactly.
Is it me?
Or is because of hormones?
是的。
Yeah.
And then sometimes it does.
And so it's like, okay.
And then other times it doesn't and it go and you think, oh, well then it obviously is just me.
对。
And Yeah.
It's really really hard to get your head around, isn't it?
当你
When you
can't Oh, I hate it do so much.
I hate it so much.
对。
Yeah.
And I I no, you can't.
You absolutely can't.
And I and I feel like it's it's, you know, it's that's come along with perimenopause and and everything, every delightful little addition that that gives me that that I I hate that feeling of, is this just me or is it something else?
And I think I think I can now look back over the last couple of years and think, do you know what?
I am different.
I am different to how I used to be.
I'm definitely different.
Like like mood wise, different.
Like, I feel like and I know this is gonna hark back to conversations that we've had about neurodiversity, but I feel like, and and I'm not I'm not outing myself.
I haven't been diagnosed.
I'm definitely not, you know.
Although although yesterday, because of a couple of home small disasters, I was like, Dave, you're not autistic.
You're ADHD.
I'm autistic.
Anyway, so that's the way we've decided we are in our family.
But I feel like that whatever I have been doing for all of my life up until about two years ago, I've stopped doing.
对。
Yeah.
Like, I feel like that masking thing has just gone.
对。
Yeah.
And just realizing how difficult life is to manage without a protective, oh, this is how I need to behave and this is what I need to do.
And my mood has gone in in the exact same way where I'm just I feel it feels uncontrollable around period of time.
So yeah.
So that was kind of
Is it worth talking to a GP about?
Maybe.
对。
Yeah.
You know they're just gonna send me away with antidepressants, don't you?
It's like Yeah.
Don't know.
I don't know whether this is necessarily the answers.
One of my friends went to the GP for, like is it PMDD?
Oh, yeah.
I don't know what they the acronym?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
And and they gave her antidepressants to take just during the the luteal period.
Oh, really?
But then I was always a little it it didn't I have to admit, it didn't really work for her.
She found coming on and off them, like, worse Yeah.
Than the than it was.
所以……
So
对。
Yeah.
I'm just kinda wonder
whether it could be a conversation, but
Maybe.
It can be a conversation.
I mean, I'm kind of loathed to there's like, I've been on antidepressants before when I was in my twenties, I think.
Twenties and no.
Just twenties.
Maybe thirties.
Can't remember.
Two or three times and varying degrees of success.
And I think the first time it really worked.
And then I grabbed for them too early the other times.
And then there was a very, you know, no marked difference.
And I And I think since then, with kind of all sorts of that would be an interesting conversation to have actually, perhaps.
Let's get Julia on to talk about antidepressants because I think there's a I would be very, very worried about taking them again because kind of research and stuff that's happened since.
Not I know that they are like a crucial medication for many many people, but there are but there are it's nuanced.
There are so many available and there can be so many different sorts of side effects and things like that.
And unless you also have a very good GP, I think Yeah.
And potentially some great talking therapy alongside it.
Oh, I don't know.
I don't know.
And I just it just feels like my GP practices it feels like the last few times I've been there, it feels like it's been stretched so thin.
对。
Yeah.
I don't I don't know what I'd get from it.
That said, pushing all of that aside for one moment, I have got some good medical news, which is that I had a phone call, while I was on holiday, from our hospital to say that I've got an appointment at rheumatology.
They they had a cancellation.
Is that to do with Raynaud's?
是的。
Yes.
Oh my gosh.
So that GP that I got a bit annoyed with because I thought I I felt like I was being dismissed, I have been put on a waiting list, and I have it tomorrow morning, that I'm going along to.
But then I I was worrying to Dave this morning, I think, going, I don't know what I'm going to say to them because it's not cold.
So it's
That's okay.
I think you you you know what it's what happens when it does get cold.
Like, talk me through it, your normal symptoms.
You get white, white fingers.
对。
Yeah.
I can talk about the normal Raynaud's symptoms.
What I can say is that it has got progressively and significantly worse over the past two years.
So two to three years.
I'd say the last two years, what makes it very obvious to me that it's got significantly worse is that I put bed socks on in about October and don't take them off.
And it was the week before the heat wave that I stopped wearing bed socks.
So it was still May where I was wearing bed socks.
So feet are definitely affected and differently from hands.
But so chill blades and stuff.
But I think the thing the reason why I went to talk about it was not just the Raynaud's, but because it was significantly worse in one hand than the other.
And I kept on looking online and I did go to chat GPT.
And I was like, what's going on here?
And they were they it was suggested to me that I should get my blood pressure taken in both arms to see if there was a difference.
She couldn't find a difference when I asked that.
But yeah, there was kind of so, yeah, it's both hands being different.
And then I started getting lumps in my left hand.
So she dismissed me as saying, I think that might be chilblains.
And I was like, it's not chilblains.
I know what chilblains are.
They're not itchy, but my hands actually, they got very very swollen.
And then I developed these lumps between the knuckles.
There are about four lumps
好的。
Okay.
I remember.
And now the only thing that remains they're fine now.
I see what you mean.
I guess if without it without you having the symptoms to show them.
Right?
To show them.
Oh, yeah.
To show them.
对。
Yeah.
What I do have and what makes me think it's worth it is I do have stiffness in my knuckles at the bottom the base of my fingers.
So I think that's it's some kind of arthritis y thing now.
And that's so and I was always told that I should like, everyone, so many people have got Raynaud's, and it's it's just a thing that we, mostly as women have to cope with quite a lot.
Mhmm.
And perimenopause can make it worse.
But if there's an underlying condition, it's just trying to figure out that underlying thing.
And I think also because it doesn't seem to be massively genetic.
Like, my mom has got cold hands, but not to this degree.
对。
Yeah.
So yeah.
It's just making sure that I I think it's all the times I used to crack my knuckles before playing the piano.
Do you reckon Yeah.
They do say that.
Remember they always used to say that that that you would get arthritis if you cracked your knuckles?
I don't know.
But then you have a lot of olive oil and healthy fats.
是的。
I do.
是的。
I do.
So you'd think that that I would have counted
eat my seeds and I yeah.
