Hello my name is mrtomfroese and these are my thoughts on illustration.
Welcome to episode 77.
Now just as a reminder, the end of these monologue episodes, I give you a clear exercise to help you turn my thoughts on illustration into action.
So stick around all the way to the end and be sure to have your sketchbook and pencil ready.
Before we get into today's episode, I need to let you know about the future of this podcast.
This is especially important information for paid supporters on Patreon and Spotify.
This June, as I do every year, I will put the mic down so I can free up a bit of time for enjoying the summer.
The difference is that this time, I'm putting down the mic for good.
After four years of doing this podcast and struggling with doubt about whether I should keep doing it, I've finally decided that it's time to let it go.
This has been a very hard decision, years in the making, but I now know it's absolutely necessary.
As the New Year approached last winter, I started doing some more serious thinking about all the things that I'm doing, how I'm spending my time, and how to focus more and do fewer things and go deeper into those things, all in the hopes that I would start seeing more meaningful gains in return for it.
I talk about this in episode 66, the one big shift I'm making in 2026.
And I touched on it in episode 68 as well, where I explored the question, are your side projects sabotaging your goals?
The long and short of it is that as much as I enjoy the podcast in certain ways, it's overall just not giving back what I'm putting into it.
This is not to say I don't want to give back to the illustration community, that I don't want to offer up helpful tips and experiences, or it might give you some of my experience for you and for your benefit, but it's just the reality of the situation for me.
So what's going to happen with the podcast and to me?
First, I'll keep the podcast up for now.
At some point in the future, I hope to release all episodes, those that are currently support or paid like this, to the public.
Patreon
The Patreon will still continue, but, of course, not to support the podcast.
It will primarily run as my venue for the monthly Draw With Me's.
These have always been a pleasure and are easy enough for me to manage and to keep going.
As for me, I'll be continuing to build classes and courses both for Skillshare and as self hosted ones as well.
Currently, I'm in the midst of my first test run of a cohort based course called Know Your Art.
This will become the flagship of my line of courses that I will begin making more widely available in the near future.
Any content that I produce for social media will be more strategically aligned with my classes.
In marketing speak, this is called lead generation.
This does not mean the content will be obviously marketing.
It's just that I'll be being more intentional about why I'm giving away free content in the first place.
At the end of the day, it has to keep the lights on.
In all likelihood, I'll return to posting videos on YouTube.
They'll be topic based, but more directly tied into my courses.
Viewers will get something from the video with no strings attached.
It will hopefully be worth their time, but hopefully some of these viewers will want to go deeper and find they can do that through my classes or through other paid products.
You'll start seeing these changes in July in one way or another.
I hope to launch my first public version of Know Your Art in the fall of twenty twenty six.
I also have a new Skillshare class planned for the end of June twenty twenty six called stylization for illustrators, how to draw less realistically.
I think this one will resonate with a lot of folks out there trying to figure out their style.
So that's where things are headed for me.
I'd like to thank all who have supported me and this podcast in one way or another for your kind comments, by sharing, even just by subscribing and listening.
But especially, thank you to those who've gone the extra mile to support me as a paid listener.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

好的。
Okay.
Let's get on with the show.
Today, I wanna talk about substance.
It's something I think about a lot as an illustrator, but it's hard to put down in words because, honestly, it might not be something I can teach.
It's something more like a question I want you to think about, and I think it's an important one.
So what is substance?
There's a lot to it, but it comes down to this.
Substance is the sense of personal meaning that comes through in your work, not just in one illustration, but across your work as a whole.
It's the feeling that there's someone behind the work working something out, that you're doing something more than just making pictures.
In my cohort course, Know Your Art, which is something I'm in the process of building right now, I talk about four pillars that make up a strong body of work.
Purpose, point of view, craft, and substance.
I talk about this in episode 72, which is called four portfolio mistakes of struggling illustrators.
So if you wanna hear more about that, that's maybe a good place to start.
But just for context, I need to recall the pillar called point of view.
So point of view is about how you filter every illustration project through your own lens, both in terms of concept and execution.
How you think about what you're illustrating about, and how you give that shape through style and composition.
So substance is related to point of view, but it's not the same thing.
You can have a strong point of view, an original take, a unique visual approach, and still have work that feels somehow like it doesn't go very deep.
You can say that point of view is more directly about the work, while substance is about what and who is behind that work.
It might also be helpful to say what the opposite of substance is, which is superficiality.
If if substance is digging deep, superficiality is, of course, just scratching the surface.
To be clear, to be superficial doesn't mean the work is bad.
It really depends on what's needed.
Sometimes shallow work is exactly what's needed, and on that note, illustration is a commercial art, so so much of what we're making is more superficial than not.
In this space, we can't always be trying to figure out the deepest questions of our existence.
Much of the time, we just need to keep things light hearted and fun.
But I think having a range of depth in our work makes us more versatile as illustrators.
We don't always need to be serious, but when we need to go deep, we can.
When I think about this range, I think about the work of Paul Rand.
If you've been listening to this podcast for any length of time, you know he's one of my biggest influences.
But if you look at his work, it's really easy to find, you see this range that I'm talking about.
He can make a super playful picture book for kids and a serious editorial illustration depicting the tragedy of war, all in the same style.
There's something I find in all his work that gives me the sense that he's drawing from something deeper, some kind of pursuit.
He's chasing something, or there's some core set of ideals he's working from, and he's aware of them.
Like I've been saying, it's hard to pin down what this is, but there's some some kind of quality here that I'm talking about.
Even if it's not perfect, it's still worth talking about for me.
Now, unlike many aspects of our art which we develop and build up over time, I don't think substance is like that.
It's a bit more backwards, actually.
It's something that already exists in you.
It existed in you before you ever heard about illustration.
There was probably a moment in your life where you saw some art or illustration, and it moved you so much that you decided you wanted to do that too.
You didn't set out to stumble on this initial spark moment.
It just happened.
It's sort of like striking oil.
You're just digging around in the garden until suddenly there's black gold bubbling out of the ground.
There are these deep wells, and that's what you end up drawing from.
You're just lucky enough to find one by accident at first, but then you start noticing where the wells are and what the substance even is in the first place.
So for your work, to have substance based on You just heard a free preview of this Thoughts on Illustration monologue episode.
