And I went into that race not not wondering if I could, but telling myself, like, you will do this.
You will start running.
It's gonna be really hard, but you will be able to to hang on to that pace.
And you you just need to keep your mind there instead of start the race.
It feels hard and that and and keep that as a sign that you're not gonna be able to do it.
You have to completely flip that around.
Hey.
Welcome back to the next episode of the trail running women podcast.
Super fun episode for you guys today.
I'm chatting with Elizabeth Halloran, and she's out of Canmore, Alberta, a pretty successful trail runner.
Well, a very successful trail runner.
But one of the things we're talking about today is her mindset and her training to a sub three marathon.
So, that's road, but it's super transferable.
We talk about the connection between that and the trail running that she was doing and the actual difference in her training to get to a sub three and that it was mostly mindset.
So we really get into that and I just think it is such a powerful tool that I think we know the importance of, but sometimes we don't get to dissect it enough and it was really fun.
She is super well spoken about how this changed for her and then it wasn't like it took a few years.
So she has a lot of really great stories, super fun, and she's also a coach herself.
You can check her out on Instagram at runningtherockies and I will link to that in the show notes as well.
Speaking of coaching, if you are looking for that, we have a couple spots open in our group coaching where it's pretty fun if you are not ready for one on one and you wanna chat with other people and see how their training is going and ask questions.
And then we have some zoom calls and we get to know each other and it's been a lot of fun.
So shoot me a note on Instagram if you'd like more info on that is probably the best way.
So at trailrunningwomenpod.
And huge thanks to everybody who has guest suggestions and all that good stuff.
And I am recording this to come out right after orcas or the week after.
Depends if I get my post race recap done actually post race or if I'm too mushy in the old brain to do it.
So, yeah, I imagine that I've had some fun conversations with people during the race and after the race, and I'm gonna preemptively say thank you for your conversations.
They were lovely.
But I don't wanna just not acknowledge.
So there we go.
Now, hopefully it happens.
And hopefully I didn't freeze to death because it is cold.
What else can I say?
I think that's it for now.
Huge thanks to Liz for coming on the show and that's it.
Here we go.
Just about to go down a rabbit hole of chitchat with our next guest, which usually means that it is gonna be an awesome episode.
So I have spent some time looking over your website and your accomplishments, and you have done some absolutely amazing things, both road and trail.
So I'm super excited to get into it.
Welcome to the show, Liz.
Thank you so much for having me.
I'm so pumped to chat.
是的。
Yeah.
So we were just chatting that you were recommended through your husband's cousin, if I got that right.
对。
Yeah.
A runner I actually coach, and she just finished her first 100 miler, and she's an awesome human being in general.
So I imagine that the family connection will be great too.
没错。
Totally.
That's so awesome.
是的。
Yeah.
We I've actually only been able to met to meet Jen once.
We met at Squamish fifty the other year, so small world, Totally.
但是
But
对。
Yeah.
So, I mean, let's get get started with a brief intro on where you're living now, and I don't believe you're actually from there, but we'll get into all those details and what you do, and then we'll start with how you got into running.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Totally.
So I live in Canmore.
Been here for a few years.
I was living in Banff, which is, like, twenty minutes down the road, and was there for maybe eight years, but either way, based out of the Canadian Rockies.
I grew up in Ontario, so Brampton, just outside Toronto.
And then when I was in university, I started coming out to West just in the summer.
I had a summer job working at the Columbia Icefield doing tour guide stuff, and I just loved the lifestyle, like trail running, hiking, everything fun like that in the summer.
And so when I finished school, I came out here to do one more summer, and then I never left.
And now I'm pretty pretty hooked here.
It it's such a funny common story of people from Eastern Canada, particularly other people that end up coming, and they're like,
oh, now I'm here permanently.
没错。
Totally.
And I feel like you either it's, yeah, Alberta or BC.
I did a few winters living in Whistler as well, and I I feel like that would be my my backup.
I I love West Coast so so much.
But, yeah, pretty situated in in Kenmore here now.
I work from home.
I'm a an IT project manager, so it's kinda cool.
I work for a company that does a lot of, like, tourism and hospitality, but I get to work on IT projects for them and get to travel some pretty cool places.
And, yeah, that's what has kinda kept me in in Kenmore, and no plans of leaving anytime soon.
So when you first came to Whistler, is that the first place you came from Easter?
Was that to Banff first?
不是。
No.
I came to the Banff area first in the summers, and then when I was down university, I didn't really wanna get, like, a a full time grown up job just yet.
So did a few winters working for the mountain, actually, in Whistler, and I would kind of hang out head out there for the winter and then come back to the Canadian Rockies in the summer and eventually just wanted to settle down in one place.
And I felt like I had kind of more roots here.
And, yeah, now I just feel totally intertwined.
It's really hard to imagine leaving.
Totally.
Okay.
So I'm just looking at your results again, and I think we need to dive into this and then it will kind of intertwine with what I wanted to talk about anyways, which was how you found the trails.
But you have had a huge running background starting way back in 2006 with a lot of half marathons, 10 k's, and marathons back in Toronto before you I imagine before you came out, and then some in Alberta.
So tell us about your relationship with running and how you started racing roads when you were younger.
没错。
Totally.
是的。
Yeah.
I I kinda got into road racing, like, casually my last year of high school and then a little bit through university.
Got super into, like, going to the gym and working out and things like that, and then found racing, and I just loved it so much.
And even while I was in in school and life was pretty hectic, I feel like signing up for races was my, like, treat to myself, and I just couldn't get enough of it.
So I did, yeah, a crazy amount of racing, probably more than I would recommend to anyone or myself today, but it really, I just loved signing up for for any event.
And so kinda did it on and off while I was in school, but I also didn't really have, you know, like, the best lifestyle.
I didn't have much of a routine, so I really would just kinda sign up for for road races.
I loved the challenge of just getting them done.
Probably wasn't training all that properly, but really enjoyed it.
And then, you know, in Ontario, there's I I hadn't really been exposed to trail running, so road was obviously super easy.
I think that's a pretty common common experience for people, but coming out West, I always continued like, everywhere I lived, it's sort of how I would get to know a place and start start to feel settled is just get out from my regular running routes.
I spent a few summers working at the Columbia Icefield and, on days off, started to go and try to tackle a lot of the longer backcountry routes.
Usually stuff like Rockwall Trail or Skylar, these are some classic Rockies routes.
A lot of people, like, if you go in backcountry camp, you need to do it in two, three, four, even five days, but I found it really hard to get enough time off work to be able to do all the different routes, and I started reading about people just, like, day running them or basically through hiking, and I just thought that was such a cool way to see if I could do more of these trails that I wanted, but within a shorter amount of time.
Also, like, I just never thought that you could run these routes.
But once I I started doing that, like, I was completely hooked on trail running.
I think the first one I kinda tackled was the Skyline Trail in Jasper.
I had been booked, I think, with my partner at the time.
We were supposed to camp there for a few nights.
There ended up being a fire.
We had to cancel our reservation, and it was sort of either I wasn't gonna be able to get to do that trail again because I couldn't get a campsite the rest of the summer or I had to decide to run it in a day, and it was kinda like super scary experience heading out there doing it solo, but it was such a rush.
And I think from there, I thought, okay.
If I've done that route, which was 45 k, I might as well sign up for one of these 50 k ultras.
I think the first one I signed up for was Mount Robson fifty k.
It's just outside of Jasper.
It, like, destroyed me, but I loved it so much that I think I'd probably sign up for two more in the months that followed, and then it just was a bit of a runaway train from there.
是的。
Yeah.
Totally.
If I look like it went from that 50 k to Squamish fifty fifty, Finless and Arm 100 k, which we both run 100 mile hours.
So, yes, it got carried away for sure.
But yes, usually at the same time, and this is what I'm super interested about.
And I'll give you some context.
I'm like, looking through your website, and it's interesting when I get a guest that's close by because we have comparable races so I can figure out not in a competitive way at all.
Like, oh, how do we relate as runners?
Because sometimes I interview people that I'm like, well, I have no idea how you ever could accomplish that so fast like it blows my mind.
And then other people are like, I can see where you're coming from.
And so if I look at the same races we've done that are like 100 ks or longer, I'm like, yeah, we're on the same page here.
And then we get to your road running, which has gone absolutely bananas.
And I am like, how does someone start running 50 milers?
But on the side, your road paces get so fast.
So those same years that you start running the 50 k's, the 50 miler, and not crazy times yet, but you're starting to get your, like, three thirty something marathons and your sub one forty half marathons.
Was that something that you did on purpose or did you just did the aerobic base get so much better that you could do these road runs faster?
I think at first, like, I think there was a lot of low hanging fruit with my aerobic base.
And I think, like, I've always run a lot, but I just didn't know what I was doing in training at all.
And so I think I just needed a few tweaks to really, like, go back and learn the basics.
And I actually started so my first coach that I worked with was Mike Lebel, which is I I learned of him from, I think, trying to run and then not doing so great at Family Sin Arm.
But he really helped me.
Like, I was doing a ton of running, but I wasn't doing it strategically.
I was probably running way too fast, maybe doing way too much, not really, like, focusing on the right areas.
So he really brought some basic aerobic base building, don't go too hard, be a little bit more strategic with your speed workouts.
And I feel like the combination of him bringing that structure in and then me actually learning how my training was actually contributing to a result rather than just getting out and doing it, that's where things started to kinda pick up and take off.
And as I learned more and more, then I started to be able to apply some of those principles myself and be a lot like, I became a lot more aggressive with my goals, but I think Mike definitely, like, got that train running for me, which I'll always be super grateful for him for.
Yeah, Mike is the race director of Finland's arm, and we've talked about that race over here, I've run a lot of them.
And he's amazing.
And I didn't realize I actually interviewed him about that race because it's so technical and gnarly and crazy.
是的
Yeah.
He's like, oh, yeah.
I've also run a sub three marathon.
I'm like, what?
Like, he's annoyed.
没错。
Totally.
So Yeah.
And I think Go ahead.
Like, I I love I love trail and road.
I think it's it's so funny too.
I think in certain mountain towns, like, people are very divided, maybe which community they fall into, and you either really like one or or the other.
And, you know, I know a lot of people hate on the road a little bit, but I really, really love both.
They they almost feel like totally different sports to me, yet I do think that they complement each other so much, which is really interesting.
I think that they are different sports too.
And I think Yeah.
You can see that in runners that like, yeah, there's one that just suits their personalities more than the other and maybe not personalities, not right because I don't want to play into that divide, but sure their natural skill set like for me the longer the better because it comes out to like some toughness versus like I'm not going to be a fast Roadrunner.
Mean, I can get better, but I'm not ever going to be competitive.
And then some people are other way the other way around.
And I think that's because they are the same but different kind of what you said.
But I mean, it's so good for you Just turn around and work on turnover, and then go back to your 100 ks 100 mile goal.
Think
totally
teaches you so much about your body and not getting that like, almost lazy trail pace that we can get into in the summer?
是的。
Yeah.
And I think it helps me keep from getting, like, burnt out on on it as well because it feels really different.
Like, doing a marathon build feels so, so different than training for, like, a 50 mile or a 100 k or a 100 miler.
And I'm just not up for both all the time.
So if I'm really not feeling like doing a lot of speed work or I'm wanting to spend more time outside, you know, I can lean more towards the longer stuff.
But if I'm kind of, like, time crunched or really feeling like I wanna push myself and, like, test my limits, then I can lean into some of my role goals.
And I really just like being able to bounce between the two because you don't you don't get bored of it.
It just feels like totally different.
对。
Yeah.
And I love that because if we look again at your results, it kind of shows that like, you can do it all, but you can't do it all at once.
So you can see
the shifts of like, oh, you did a you did 100 miler and 100 ks and squamish 5,050 all kind of in the same time period.
And then it looks like probably was like, I'm going to work on some road because that's what I think is exciting.
And so we get to 2019.
And yes, there's still some really long stuff in there.
But then you start running sub forty minute 10 ks, which is insane.
And I feel like that was around the time like 02/2021 where your marathon time suddenly went down to like three zero nine and then eventually to sub three.
So let's talk a bit about that.
And like was there a time in that really long trail running section of life where you decided to go after a sub three marathon?
有。
Yeah.
And it's oh, I'm so glad you asked me this because I think what honestly put the idea in my head, I have two sources of inspiration.
One is my really good friend, Alex.
I remember her just saying, like, she I think she ran a three zero five or something.
She's like, man, the next marathon, like, sub three or bust.
I just remember thinking, like, that'd be such a hardcore time, but I also remember listening to one of these episodes with you, and I think it was Tori, and I remember Tori just saying, like, I just wanna do a sub three.
Like, I just think a time with a two in front of it is so universally hardcore.
And I kind of just, I remember hearing both of those women just talk about this being such an amazing goal and it stuck with me.
And I think I had, you know, for so long tried to qualify for Boston.
I think I needed three thirty at the time, and it really did take me a long time to reach that milestone.
And then I think through just better training, maintaining my aerobic base, just being a little bit smarter, I was able to cut down to three twenty and then fairly comfortably to more like three ten, three fifteen, And that three hour goal just felt like really, really scary, and it it genuinely I I was like, I I don't think I believed for a long time that I could actually do it, but that made me want it really, really bad.
对。
Yes.
And so that's funny that you mentioned that about Tory because she just ran a three zero two
because That's amazing.
是的。
Yeah.
She's going for it right now too.
And, yeah, she called it the great equalizer because the man who won't even sub three is unbelievable.
So totally.
And once you get that in your mind, but it's so fast.
So you also have to have this confidence and coming from like, I think mine is like three thirteen right now or something that it's like the first step is to say, okay, I can take those thirteen minutes off.
对。
Yeah.
And I'm still in a place where I don't totally believe that.
So I would have to like just throw myself in and and start.
So was there any mental block for you around getting that low or, like, talk us through the the training I
think, like, if I look back, you know, I've the first time I'd say I really went for and trained specifically to try to go under three hours was in 2021.
And I think for that first time, I kinda did the workouts.
I could do some of the the shorter stuff at pace.
The longer stuff, not quite not quite.
And I I think I knew it would be, like, quite a stretch goal to go and nail it on the first time, but I still sort of had this hope that I would do it.
And I I went for it at Boston, which is a tough course.
Still don't wanna believe that.
And I I kinda just went for it.
I maybe held on for the first half, and then I I really just couldn't hold it.
And I I didn't totally blow up, but I slowed down quite a bit.
And I I think I ran three fourteen.
And I was disappointed for sure, but I also was like, okay.
I'm one step further.
Like, I think I can do this.
But I really thought that I'm I would maybe hit that mark in the next race, maybe the one after.
And that's really not what happened.
And I would say it's kinda between that first attempt and when I finally did it that, like, I had to learn how to reframe every time I did fail at reaching that goal, and when I finally did that, it's like everything clicked.
So, you know, I would I got better at doing long run workouts.
I got closer to my paces or I would hit paces, but I still never you know, there'd be a workout like four times five k or two times 10 k, and I can hit the pace for the workout, but it just still felt so hard that I really, in my head, was like, there's no way I can actually do this.
And I would set out on race day.
I would set out at pace, and it it didn't feel easy.
And I would really get in my head during the race, and I would freak out, and I would I would usually blow up or I would just kinda choke is the best way to summarize it.
And I think I just thought every time would be different.
You know, I I ran CIM.
I think I did three zero nine.
I I had an attempt at BMO one year, another three zero nine.
And then I think I went back to Boston 2024.
My training went much better, and I was like, this is the best training.
Like, I can tell that I've I've really improved my fitness.
The mistake I made is I still really just think that I thought I would show up on race day, and the pace would feel easy, and I would just do it.
And I absolutely blew up in Boston.
I think I ended up running like three twenty eight, and I was so, so upset.
And I really wanna speak to this because, yeah, you can look at my results and it's great that I've done the times that I have now, but I really wanna share that I failed so many times before.
And every time I failed, I used it as like, oh, this is another, it's another, like, piece of proof that I I I can't go sub three.
Like, I am not capable of it.
And after after I kinda blew up at Boston, I was I just got so frustrated that I kinda used that anger to to do a bit of a shift in my mind.
And I my training had gone so well.
I signed up for another marathon three weeks later, which is not generally what I would recommend.
Woah.
But I know that I had ended up running the race so much slower than what I had trained at that I kind of just felt in my gut, I'm like, I'm not as tired as if I fully raced this.
And if I can turn around and leverage this fitness and really just go for it, I'm gonna do it.
And I went into that race not not wondering if I could, but telling myself, like, you will do this.
You will start running.
It's gonna be really hard, but you will be able to to hang on to that pace, and you you just need to keep your mind there instead of start the race, it feels hard, and that and and take that as a sign that you're not gonna be able to do it.
You have to completely flip that around.
And, yeah, I ended up doing the Toronto marathon a few weeks later.
I also didn't tell anyone that I was doing this race, basically, aside from my husband, who's my fiance at the time.
And I think I needed to take some of that external pressure off and really just focus on myself.
And for whatever reason, it was just one of those days that totally clicked and I ran two fifty six.
And it just, like, it made me look back and be like, you you had this the whole time.
Like, you really just had to fully mentally commit and accept that this is gonna be hard, but you can do it.
是的。
Yeah.
And which is so impressive and so cool.
And before we get in, I have questions on the the training and how it changed for you, but this is such a universal question because it also it's gonna happen for our listeners, whether they are back of the pack, mid pack, or front of the pack where the fitness is there and the mindset is the difference.
So what were the tools you use in the race that people can take on their next trail race that when it did feel hard because it's supposed to?
How did you deal with this time when you were successful?
Yeah, it's a good question.
I think I so something that I really carried with me into that race is instead, I think for so long I'd been visualizing what it would look like or what it would feel like for me to succeed at this goal.
And I always visualized, you know, crossing the finish line.
Like, felt so comfortable.
I felt happy.
And instead, during the race, I visualized it's gonna feel so hard and it's gonna hurt, but you're gonna be you're gonna be ready for that and you're gonna push through that.
Like, I I really focused on mentally preparing for how I was going to stick with the discomfort rather than not being prepared for it at all.
And I know that sounds like a little bit woo woo because it sounds like a bit of a magic trick, but just that simple shift told my mind that like, you need to be it's not a sign that you're not capable of this goal, just because it feels hard.
You should expect for it to feel difficult, and so that when it did feel tough, it wasn't a sign that, oh, you've gone out too hard, you're redlining, your training isn't there to support you.
I was expecting it, and I just used that as momentum.
The further I got into that race as well, I felt like I was more focused on, Look what you've already done in this first hour, hour and a half, two hours.
And it just that margin or that that window where something could go wrong got smaller and smaller, and I feel like I just used it as momentum and got more and more confident as the race went on.
是的。
Yeah.
That's so awesome.
And it does sound a bit woo woo, but also not because we talk about that all the time.
Actually, there's a book Endure by Alex Hutchinson that we've I've referenced, like, for years where he talks about, like, that This is hard feeling is a warning sign that you don't have to listen to.
So if you can flip that switch to be like, okay, great.
Like, that's, it's hard, but like, that's, that's it.
That's where that ends.
And then you don't have to slow down to accommodate that feeling.
是的。
Yeah.
And I also, I think I looked back at I often find like some of the training runs I do leading into race day, like you almost feel worse in some of those than you actually do during the race.
Even if you don't hit your paces, I really look back at some of the runs I've done where, like, earlier in in the workout, it feels completely unsustainable.
But when you look back, you actually did nail the workout.
You did hit your paces even though at the start you thought you couldn't, and so I really try to draw on that in the race now as well.
That if you can do that during like, you've had this feeling before where maybe it feels a little bit too hard or maybe you're going a bit too aggressive or you're worrying if you can hang on, but you did it then.
And so if you can do it in your workouts, you can do it in the race.
You just have to to learn how to interpret that feedback as something different rather than, like, you know, a flashing warning sign.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
And that if you could do it and it was hard in the training, trust the taper and that it might be a game changer when you are actually in a race environment.
没错。
Totally.
So after Toronto, it's like, okay, sweet.
I've done the road marathon.
Let's get back to the trails for some squamish 50 mile.
Actually, you know what?
Before we get into that, you talked about how this training for Boston was like your best training.
Was there anything that you actually change?
Like how many kilometers miles, whatever you want to speak in?
Were you running per week?
And was there like a change to the structure?
Or were you just maybe the fitness also just takes more than sixteen weeks and your practice before it was all kind of coming together?
I didn't change the structure too much.
I didn't have the volume too much.
I'm like, I'm not a crazy high volume runner.
I might be if I like invested my time a little bit differently, but I I more is not necessarily more for me.
And so like, I definitely didn't lean too hard into high mileage.
I think leading up to Boston that year, training felt like it was going well because I could just more consistently hit a lot closer to my marathon paces.
And I think I found the right amount of intensity.
I think other blocks, I went way too aggressive on some of the paces, and it was sorta like, okay, I take like three hour pace, you're trying to do like four fifteen a kilometer.
I think I would like, if I was, you know, four sixteen per kilometer, it was immediate, oh, I failed.
I'm going too slow.
Like, I'm not hitting the paces.
对。
Right.

I think going into that Boston build, I was a bit more relaxed with the range.
We live at altitude here too.
I it feels good to hit your paces, but when you're, like, at 1,400 meters, you're not going to hit it the exact same you're at, like, at at sea level.
It's very, very hilly here as well.
Like, it's very hard to find somewhere to do, like, a 20 mile dead flat run.
You're gonna encounter some hills.
You're gonna encounter some crazy headwinds.
And I think I had been really dead set before on if you do not hit the exact pace, you're not gonna get the training effect even though I know in my head that's not true.
I think I just relaxed a little bit and ins you know, instead of you have to hit four fifteen, four fifteen to four twenty five is great.
As I got closer to the race, I would wanna be a little bit closer, but I just I think I actually dialed it back a little bit and gave myself some space and almost, like, broadened the range of what a successful workout looked like, if that makes sense.
It makes total sense.
And I think I've had the same thing and that I have, like, an amount per week that I'll run where suddenly I can't hit tempo pace anymore.
And that's like the sweet spot.
And that I was getting to the the same point where I'm like, oh, I can't keep this pace.
And then you feel like you failed versus, okay, like maybe I need to switch this to effort for a little bit and sort of ignore the pace and actually finish the tempo session.
And it's gonna turn the dial on fitness and just like trust that maybe it's not gonna look perfect numbers wise every day.
没错。
Exactly.
对。
Yeah.
The same idea.
I just, yeah, taking some of the stress off because also a lot of people have a lot going on in life.
And if you've had a big day with work or you haven't been able to eat perfectly that day, like, it's not always gonna be perfect, and we have to let go of
that, which runners probably have a hard time doing.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think, like, if you can learn to just, like, lean into those cues a little bit more and adjust your training based on how all that stuff is going, you're not constantly, like, you're not holding yourself to the super, super high standard all the time.
And then when it is time to absolutely, like, nail a workout or a long run, you're ready to do that because you're not burnt out from, like, chasing perfection every single time, if that makes sense.
钱。
Dollars.
Totally.
是的。
Yeah.
And one thing I think is cool is, like, so that's 2,024.
And then you go back to CIM.
Which is that that's late in the year, right?
Like November?
Yeah, like early December.
Okay, and then run February.
So another PB and squamish 50 mile ten twenty seven, which also I believe is a 50 mile PB, particularly on that challenging course.
And then continue into the year after where squamish 50 mile you take off like forty five minutes and run a nine forty eight, which is a huge leap in your trail performance.
Was there something that changed their mental mentally or physically?
Or do you think your marathon speed really transferred well into that race?
I don't think that I got I think it's more mental rather than necessarily the speed itself.
Like, for sure, some incremental gains, and I love that.
Like, it felt so good to to have that, you know, sub three marathon goal off my back because it's really that thing that I was like, I don't know if I can do this.
And when I finally did it, it shifted from this thing that I had to prove that I can do to like a more fun, curious thing that I can chase now.
And I think, yeah, that applies to the marathon, but I kind of feel like I just felt like this weight lifted in general for me having to prove myself.
And in doing that, it made me more willing to set a goal that I might not reach and not feel like I was a failure if I didn't do it.
I think that's the biggest thing I learned from trying to go sub three is that I failed so many times, but I was actually getting closer to reaching that goal every time.
It didn't matter that I failed.
Like, it was a step in that direction.
And so now if I set another goal and I mess it up, like, it doesn't mean I got worse.
It means I tried something.
And whether or not I made it closer on paper or not, I am closer to achieving it.
And so I think with Squamish, the year, I guess 2024, like, I was happy with my my time, the ten twenty something, but my goal going into that day had been ten hours.
And I wanted to go back and, like, get them.
And I wasn't afraid to say, like, I'm gonna be disappointed if I don't reach it, but I'm willing to go for it.
And I also wanted to try to be more competitive.
I wanted to try to get on the podium in Squamish.
And I know, I think before I wouldn't have felt comfortable saying that because it's a really competitive race,
但是
but
I was excited and not afraid to fail.
And I think that held me accountable, you know, on race day in Squamish.
Like, I I went a little bit harder from the get go than I would have other years.
I still I think I race smart.
I didn't show up and blow up kind of thing, but I was just more tuned into just go for it.
And if you don't do it, that's okay.
But you're gonna have made progress on what you did last year.
是的。
Yeah.
I think letting go and at this point, I don't know if this plays into your thought process at all.
Like your coach in the community and there's sometimes an outside pressure of like, well, I'm a coach, I should do well, and I should accomplish my goals and show that like, I can practice what I preach.
But I think it's more inspiring to say, I have this goal, I'm gonna give it a go.
And if I realize eight hours into a race where you're like brain a little bit mush, that it's not gonna be perfect, that you can still finish strong.
And I think like I saw in one of your blogs having an a b and c goal, which I always promote so much because I think it's easy to get into a race and think it's not exactly what you thought it would be.
And then to just death march it in and that it's way more inspiring and show so much more character and knowledge to actually be able to to finish it strong however you end up.
So I don't even know if there's a question with that, just that I thought that was impressive.
Well, thank you.
And it's I just think the people I look up to or I find, like, I really relate to a lot is, like, it's so awesome when someone sets an ambitious goal and they just nail it on the first try or, you know, that's what happens a lot of the time.
Like, good for them.
That's so amazing.
But I really like just find I connect with people who you get to see how they respond when things don't go perfectly and how they react in failure.
And that's when I learn the most from someone else.
And, you know, I had a great race at Squamish last summer, but in between that, I went and ran Gorge Waterfalls fifty k.
And again, my goal there was like, I wanna race a bit more aggressively.
And I I kinda way overcorrected and went super, super hard.
There's, a a pretty big climb that at the start of that race, and I went way too hard up it.
I absolutely blew up and, like, I had a pretty rough race.
And it wasn't a bad time or anything, but it was I was almost embarrassed because I'm like, oh, I'm I really I overdid it.
That was a little bit too much.
But I think having that experience helped me find the right effort to head out in Squamish.
Totally.
而且我
And I And
so yeah.
I mean, it wasn't like a perfect linear progression, but you just gotta go for it sometimes.
You do.
Especially now, like, 50 k's, 50 miles are so fast in the women's field.
没错。
And Yeah.
You if you were like, I wanna be a contender, you kinda have to see like, how hard can I hit this and get through it?
You gotta you're gonna you might screw it up.
And that's probably not like good coaching advice.
But I think if you wanna be competitive, like, gonna have to just throw your hat in the ring and see what you got at some point.
没错。
Exactly.
And sometimes that's not gonna work, I think we all just need to be comfortable being like, yeah, I went for it and didn't work today.
And that's okay.
And it's not something to be embarrassed about or look at as a failure.
Like, I really think it's just, alright.
I learned something.
I have more information for the next time I attempt something like this, and and that's all it is.
没错。
Totally.
And I think for the regular runner, or it can be like, oh, I DNF'd and to not take that to be the end of the world because you probably did learn something from it.
And sometimes it appears like 100 k's, 100 miles are easy and they're not.
And they're they're really hard and any number of things can go wrong.
So like, yeah, every quotations failure is a learning experience.
One question just on the logistics.
When you're training for a 100 k versus a road marathon, because we get this question all the time.
And so I want to ask your coaching mind.
What's like the minimum amount you've running you can do for a 100 k?
What is your difference for a weekly mileage average for a road marathon versus 100 k 100 miler?
I think, like, I use I usually sign up for pretty mountainous 100 k's with lots of vert.
So I would actually say my total mileage, like my peak weeks, don't actually look that different, but my overall volume is way higher.
Like, I for a 100 k, I won't do much over a 100 k week.
Maybe I'll do, like and I maybe will only do, like, one or two weeks at a 100 k.
I really just try to spend a lot of time in that, like, 70 to 80 kilometer range for a longer period, but I'm also doing a lot of elevation.
And so I really try to have my peak week be at least a 100 k and, you know, around the total of what I'm gonna do in terms of vert and the race.
Like, the last 100 k I trained for was CCC in 2023.
And, yeah, I think I think I'm maybe at two weeks at a 100 k, but I had both of those weeks were pretty close to, like, 6,000 meters of climbing and descent.
I just don't really like running that much more than that, if I'm being honest.
I just I start to kinda resent it.
I don't I like the long runs, but I am not one of those people who wants to go do, like, 40 plus k for that many long runs in a row.
But I really do like, what works well for me is supplementing with cycling cycling or other cross training because I actually like to do it.
It's a great way to get in volume.
My body responds well to it.
I I don't really do too much of that that, like, cross training when I'm road running.
But I would just say, yeah, the the distance totals are pretty similar, but, like, the actual time, I almost I I pretty much do twice as much training for a 100 k when you look at the, like, the hours in a week.
是的。
Yeah.
I love that.
And I I actually did a solo cast just this morning leading into orcas about training because I have a 100 miler in a couple weeks time here.
And my yeah.
The number one thing somebody asked about volume, and I'm like, the biggest thing I wanna watch out for before being like physically too fatigued going into a 100 miler is if I start to not feel like going for a run and I have to then run a 100 miles, we got a problem.
So I love that you mentioned that, like, part of it is the mental side of, like, you gotta be stoked the whole time.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think it's so funny.
I was listening to the episode with you and Jenny.
I can't remember when, but in the last several weeks, you were doing a bunch of coaching cues and so many of the answers were like, it depends.
But I think that is the answer.
The same answer for the same athlete is gonna be different depending on what's going on, even for that one person.
And it's very different person to person.
I think it depends how competitive you are, for sure.
Like, I'm sure there's more pressure as a pro athlete, but I still think the number one thing, at least for me, and what I try to pass along to athletes like coaches, like, you it should be enjoyable most of the time.
Like, we all have to slog through those long runs that just suck.
Like, the weather sucks.
You're tired.
You're just not into it.
But that should be kind of an outlier and it like, you should not be forcing yourself to do way more than you want.
Otherwise, you're just gonna get to the start line and, like, you're gonna hate it.
There's obviously minimums to be able to get to race day safely, but I really try to step back and and not overdo it.
是的。
Yeah.
Otherwise, reevaluate your why and Yeah.
Why you're doing this race.
But I think if you can get, like, right to the verge before taper, and then taper is gonna allow you to get excited again.
Anyways, that's a rabbit hole.
But, yes, I agree.
是的。
Yeah.
Jenny's the best, and we were laughing because literally every question is like, well, it depends.
So, I mean, how old are you?
37.
37.
Okay.
So so many good fast years coming up, and you have Boston Marathon coming up again next year.
What are your goals for that if you are able to say them out loud for us?
That's a good question.
I would love to be able to go sub three at Boston, and I realized that's maybe not a a PR at this point, but, you know, I just did, I ran New York marathon in November and I ran two fifty nine, which was good, but I I kinda wanted more.
And so I ended up signing up for CIM right after.
And I PR'd there.
I did two fifty four, which was awesome, but I'm kind of now feeling I'm not as excited about trading as I was probably three or four months ago.
I'm still really excited to do the race, but I'm I'm kind of accepting.
I'm not sure if this is one where I wanna go all in, but I do think it'd be really cool if I could still get under that three hours because Boston's the race where I wanted to do that the first time, and I tried twice and I still haven't done it, and so I think that'd be a cool loop to close.
And I still think it's gonna be hard.
Like, I I need to keep up with a pretty rigorous training block here.
But, you know, when I was training for marathons in the fall, my new goal was sub two fifty and I was nine minutes off and close to five minutes off.
And I still wanna come back to that goal at some point, but I kinda think I need a bit of a break before digging myself into that hole.
And again, it's like chasing the sub three thing might take me five years to get under two fifty, but I'm like up for it.
I just maybe not right now.
是的。
Yeah.
I totally get that.
And it's just nice to take breaks and and do the trail.
So other than Broken Arrow 50 k, do you have anything else lined up for next year?
I actually don't.
That's Which is weird to say.
对。
Yeah.
I think, like, I used to sign you know, it's it's so funny.
I'm sure you see this as a as a coach too.
Like, it gets to be November and December, and everyone's buzzing and, like, you know, I'm almost having to tell people not to sign up for too much stuff.
Like, they're everybody's so excited about their next year calendar.
And I I really find the last few years, I'll sign up for stuff if other people are doing it.
I like to kinda be along for the ride, but I I really I'm nowhere near done racing, but I feel like I've ticked off so many of my bucket list, like races or goals that I want I need to have, like, a community or a crew to convince me to sign up for something now.
And I actually only signed up for Broken Arrow because our friend Andy got into Western States, and we're gonna go down and support him.
And I've always been curious about that race, so I figured now's the time, but I probably wouldn't sign up for that if if he wasn't racing the next weekend.
So it's another example of me just waiting to see what everyone else is doing before I sign up.
You know what's funny, though, is I can totally relate to that because when I was pregnant one year, I signed up for some stuff.
And then my friends were all randomly eight of them having babies in the same year.
Amazing.
Yes.
And we so some of the social side came away and it was like, oh, I didn't realize that this had become primarily social for me and not as much about And, yeah, just like kind of making that adjustment.
And then I took a break because I had a baby And then it became purely about racing and I trained through the winter for a winter 100 miler and didn't care if I did the runs by myself because I was craving it so bad.
So it like shifted and then it shifted again.
And it's like really cool to kind of see how it goes, but always be a part of your life.
是的。
Yeah.
I think just it does shift.
And I think that's the biggest takeaway is being able to step back and like, just acknowledge where you're at and kinda lean into that for the time being.
And then when it changes again, lean into that.
And I, like, that's what kinda makes me happy these days.
Like, same thing.
At the end of the year, I used to, like, go crazy.
I'd probably do 10 races a year.
And that's what brought me so much joy.
And I feel like if I tried to do that now, fall apart.
And I find kinda like two or three years pretty good.
是的。
Yeah.
And maybe that'll change again.
But and I also don't wanna worry about being tired.
Like I want to be able to do with friends and not be like, oh, but I gotta have energy for this upcoming coming race like or I have I'm like I'm recovering from this race so I shouldn't overdo it.
Like it's kind of nice to just be like, you know what?
If I don't feel perfect, it doesn't matter.
I don't have a reason to feel perfect right now.
And like that was stressing me out more than I thought.
没错。
Exactly.
And I think, you know, years ago, I, didn't, was usually way less responsibility and I just wanted to go run around all day and all evening.
And like, that's what I did.
And I still love that, but now there's other areas where I feel like I genuinely just wanna invest my time.
Like, we own a home.
I wanna take care of that.
I'm, like, spending more time with my husband or I'm maybe leaning into my, like, day job a little bit more and I'm coaching people now and I I wanna make time for that stuff, and so it does your energy, like, kinda gotta take time away from something else, and I feel like I have some bandwidth to give up with running.
I'm still gonna pretty much never take, like, time fully off from running, but I'm happier doing a little bit less or racing a little bit less often, but getting to do more other stuff.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think that's awesome.
And it's good to just, like, I don't know, let yourself come and go.
But my last question, this has become so much more of just like a really cool conversation with another coach instead of an interview, but I'm sorry.
It's just how it went and it No.
I love it.
Because I'm so impressed by your running and just the ability to go back and forth like so extreme from fast, really long to fast road marathons, I think is one of the most interesting things in the sport.
But okay.
So you have a 50 k in Boston Marathon coming up.
What about overall long goals, bucket list races, and, like, will you go back to doing a 100 miles?
Oh, that's a great question.
I think yes.
I definitely think I would do a 100 miles again.
I think I could see that being, like, something I come back to in five or ten years when maybe I wanna invest a bit more.
It's just a lot of training, and I kinda like not doing so much.
But, yes, one day, I'm trying to think what my some of my bucket list races would be.
I'd love to go back and do CCC again.
That was just one of the the coolest experiences out there.
Qualifying would be tough.
But I actually this might be a really lame answer, but I feel like I chased a lot of my bucket list races for a long time and that right now, I kinda feel like I've checked them all, and I'm sure something new is gonna come up.
But I don't I don't think there's a single one in my mind that I'm like, I gotta get that one on the list.
I think I just wanna keep running for life, keep getting faster where I can, but I I don't think I have that pie in the sky right now.
That's so fun, though, because that's nice.
You can just let daydreams happen and see what comes to you.
I always think that's, like, Yeah.
Such a fun
Being able to genuinely say that feels kinda weird, but I I do think that's how I actually feel.
是的。
Yeah.
That's awesome.
And I feel like like you just never know when things will come up.
So yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I'll come up with something else.
You for sure.
Don't know yet.
好的。
Okay.
Last few questions.
But before we do that, I know you're a coach.
If you wanna plug your business, your website, where can people find you?
不错。
Cool.
Oh, yeah.
So my Instagram is runningtherockies and then my website, which does have my coaching details, but it's it's also a blog.
I love writing.
You're good writer.
是的。
Yeah.
I've I got, like, Thank 200 raise
you.
It's so cool.
We've done so many of the the same things, which is awesome.
我的网站和博客是 coachhollerin.com。
But my website or blog is coachhollerin.com.
And, yeah, that's where you can find me.
好的。
Okay.
Awesome.
And I'll link to all of that in the show notes.
好的。
Okay.
Few last questions.
If you could tell me your favorite post race meal, what would it be?
I think
Hard one.
This is an unpopular opinion, but I think it's Indian food.
That is the most unique answer that we've had and such an interesting craving.
I love it.
I know.
It's my husband kinda got me onto that, and one of the years we were finishing Squamish, we were staying at our friend's house.
They'd race too.
We were trying to decide on food, and I was like, Indian food.
And everyone else was like, hard no.
But, I mean, if you can do it, that's awesome.
对。
Yep.
I can see that.
I crave Thai sometimes, so kinda the same Yes.
The salt.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
盐。
The salt.
And if you could describe trail running in three words, what would they be?
哦,
Oh,
