我女儿快半岁了，不过别担心。

My daughter is almost 0.5 old, but don't worry.

她不是什么神童，已经会甩飞钓竿了。

She's not some sort of prodigy who's already casting a fly rod.

不是的。

No.

她跟她爸一样倔，但幸好跟她妈一样可爱，一样讨人喜欢。

She's as stubborn as her dad, but thankfully as adorable as her mom and just as sweet.

我知道她18岁，还太小，不会真正记得在水边的时光，也远远不到能让她自己拿飞钓竿的时候。

And I know at 18, she's way too young to really remember some time on the water and she's certainly nowhere near being let loose with a fly rod.

但自从当了爸爸，我学到的一件事就是，和你孩子分享你热爱的东西是多么有趣。

But if there's one thing I've learned since becoming a dad, it's how much fun it is to share things you love with your kid.

所以今年夏天早些时候，我把女儿装上车，出发去了我当年的老地方，就是我学会飞钓的那条小溪。

So earlier this summer, I loaded my daughter into the truck and we set off for my old stomping grounds, the same creek where I learned to fly fish.

我女儿可能不会记得这一天，但我知道我永远不会忘记。

My daughter might not remember this day, but I know I'll never forget it.

这个夏天有点怪。

This summer was a weird one.

首先，落基山脉这边的干旱打乱了昆虫羽化的时间表，至少在我常钓鱼的那些地方是这样。

For starters, the drought here in the Rockies has messed up the hatch schedule, at least in the places that I fish.

虫子要么提前出现，要么干脆就没怎么露面。

Bugs were either early or didn't really show up at all.

鱼看起来比往年这个时候更蔫儿，这也说得通。

The fish seem more bedraggled than normal at this time of year, which makes sense.

水少了，能躲开钓鱼人的地方也少了，它们可能被钓上来的次数比平时多。

With less water and fewer places to hide from anglers, they've all probably been caught more than normal.

这个夏天也挺特别的，因为我、我妻子和女儿在怀俄明州以外待的时间比平时长多了。

It was also a weird summer because my wife, daughter, and I spent much more time than usual away from Wyoming.

我们夏天通常会去西部其他地方探亲，但这次我们在犹他州待了挺久，等着怀俄明那边的新家完工。

We normally spend a bit of time visiting our family elsewhere in the West during summer, but we've had an extended visit back in Utah while we wait for our new home back in Wyoming to be finished.

所以七月的某个下午，我开着车在犹他州的15号州际公路上，往南朝VFC总部走，看着那些我从小玩到大的山。

Which is why on a random afternoon in July, I found myself on I 15 in Utah heading south towards VFC HQ staring at the mountains that I grew up playing in.

我突然意识到，我已经快十年没在我以前常去的地方钓鱼了。

It struck me that I hadn't fished my old stomping grounds in close to a decade.

几年前，一场大火烧毁了我们小时候徒步、打猎、钓鱼和露营的山谷。

A few years ago, a massive fire ripped through the mountain valleys we would hike, hunt, fish, and camp in as kids.

那场火把沿途的一切都烧光了，结果连续两年发生严重的山体滑坡和雪崩，导致我们以前进山的那条峡谷公路完全封闭了。

The fire burned everything in its path and that resulted in back to back years of landslides and avalanches so severe that the entire canyon road we used to access the mountains was closed.

林务局没有给出重新开放的时间表，理由是当地持续的地质活动以及缺乏修复预算。

The Forest Service gave no timetable for the roads reopening, citing ongoing seismic activity in the area and a lack of budget to fix it.

一大片土地突然无法进入，随之而来的，是我许多童年钓鱼的美好回忆。

A vast swath of land was suddenly closed and with it, many of my favorite childhood fishing memories.

说实话，我早就忘了那条峡谷已经封闭，也忘了那条我学会飞钓的小溪已经进不去了。

I'd honestly forgotten about the canyon's closure and the lack of access to the creek I learned to fly fish on.

那条小溪在我小时候非常棒，现在应该也还是很不错。

That creek was spectacular in my youth and probably would still be great today.

但将近十年没法进去，我也就没怎么想过还能回去钓鱼。

But after almost a decade of not being able to access it, hadn't given much thought to ever getting back there to fish.

然后我在15号州际公路上，盯着那些山，那条小溪肯定正蜿蜒流向谷底，这时我想起了一个关于道路重新开放的报道。

Then while I was on I 15 staring at the mountains where the creek was surely winding its way down to the valley floor, I remembered a story I'd read about the road reopening.

根据新闻报道，这条路本应在今年阵亡将士纪念日活动前修好并开放。

According to the news report, the road was supposed to be fixed and opened this year in time for Memorial Day activities.

经过十年的废弃，我们终于又能进入我们的公共土地了。

After a decade of disuse, we supposedly finally had access to our public lands once again.

我一到VFC总部，就告诉其他队员，在开始工作之前我需要查点东西。

As soon as I made it to VFC HQ, I told the rest of the crew that I needed to look something up before we could start working.

我浏览了一下新闻，找到了那篇报道，确认了小溪现在确实可以进入了。

I browsed for the news story, found it, and verified that, yes, the creek was now accessible.

更棒的是，这条小溪海拔大约9000英尺。

Better yet, the creek's up at roughly 9,000 feet in elevation.

而山谷里，整个夏天几乎每天都接近或超过100华氏度。

Down in the valleys, was close to or over a 100 degrees every day for what felt like the entire summer.

我抓住一切机会去高地，逃离那令人窒息的热浪。

I took any excuse possible to make it up to the high country and escape the oppressive heat.

带着这个好消息，我回去继续工作，但心里已经盘算好了一个计划。

With that good news in my pocket, I got back to work, but not without hatching a plan first.

那天晚上回到家，我跟老婆说了我们的打算。

That night when I got home, I told my wife what we were going to do.

她立马就同意了，还上亚马逊买了我们需要的装备。

She agreed immediately and hopped on Amazon to buy the supplies we'd need.

几天后，一个全新的背包式婴儿背带就到了。

A few days later, a brand new backpack style baby carrier showed up.

对我们女儿露丝来说，它看起来有点小，而且在我婆婆的厨房里试穿时，她也不太乐意。

It looked a bit small for our daughter Ruth and she wasn't exactly enthused when we tried it on in my mother in law's kitchen.

但我告诉她，接下来会有她喜欢的事情，然后我们就都上了卡车。

But I told her she would love what was coming and then we all piled into the truck.

现在回想起来，我可能不该把这次小旅行安排在她平时午睡的时间，尤其是她本来睡眠就不太好，但我当时太兴奋了，没顾上这些细节。

In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have planned our little trip for the middle of her normal nap time, especially since she's got a bad relationship with sleep to begin with, but I was really too excited to think through little details like that.

This canyon is notorious for its winding narrow roads, blind corners, and obscenely steep grades.

It's honestly a miracle.

I drove that canyon as often as I did as a teenager and didn't get any trouble.

但这也是西部最漂亮的峡谷之一，高耸的石灰岩峭壁，大片松树和白杨林，还有一条小溪沿着路大部分路程流淌。

But it's also one of the prettiest canyons in all of the West with towering limestone cliffs, vast groves of pine and aspen, and a little stream running by the road for most of the journey.

小溪从山上倾泻而下，从一个水潭跳到另一个水潭。

The creek throws itself down the mountain bouncing from pocket to pocket.

这里没有空间进行正规的飞钓。

There's not room for proper fly casts.

这种地方钓鱼是近距离的，鱼不大，但漂亮得不像话。

It's the sort of place where the fishing is upfront and close, where the fish aren't huge but they're prettier than they have any right to be.

The road, the scenery, and the creek were all just like I remembered right down to the parking area at the trailhead.

我们看到了新的雪崩滑道、滑坡，还有小溪改道的地方，但这很正常，因为自然界总是在变化。

We saw the fresh avalanche shoots, the landslides, and the places where the creek had changed its course, but that's to be expected since the natural world is always changing.

What I didn't expect was just how much the creek had changed along the path I picked for us that day.

我想带我的妻子和女儿来这里，给他们看看我在这世上最喜欢的地方之一。

I wanted to take my wife and daughter up here to show them one of my favorite places in the world.

有一段小溪沿着马道流淌，在几个地方会开阔成大片草地。

A stretch of the creek that flows along a horse trail, which breaks into wide open meadows in a few places.

那里有瀑布、野覆盆子，还有一眼泉水，水是我喝过的最好喝、最凉的。

There's waterfalls, wild raspberries, and a spring full of the best tasting, coldest water I've ever had.

这是我小时候钓鱼最多的那段小溪，也是我逃学、逃礼拜或者逃避任何该做的事时，会来的地方。

This is the section of creek I fished the most as a kid and the section that I'd come visit when I was skipping school or church or anything else that I was supposed to be doing.

这段河最棒的地方之一就是那些河狸塘，那里溪水变深，鱼长得大，而且特别难钓。

One of the best parts of this stretch of the river is the beaver ponds where the creek got deep, the fish grew large, and they got really tough to catch.

我年轻时在这里没钓到多少鱼，一直想带着更多经验回来再钓一次。

I never caught a ton of them here in my youth and I've always wanted to come back and fish here with the benefit of more experience.

现在我带着妻子和女儿来了，说实话，我从来没想过自己会说出这句话。

Now I was here with my wife and daughter in tow, a sentence I honestly never thought I'd say.

那些海狸池塘已经不见了。

The beaver ponds were gone.

它们被山体滑坡和洪水冲毁了，溪流比记忆中更深地切进了河岸。

They'd been blown out by landslides and floods and the stream flowed deeper down its banks than I remembered.

再往上走，溪流已经向西改道了至少20英尺。

Further up, the stream had moved its course at least 20 feet to the west.

一条新路沿着溪流一直延伸到泉水边，我们在那里停下脚步，我把女儿从婴儿背带里放了下来。

A new trail had been cut to follow it up to the spring where we finally stopped hiking and I dropped my daughter from the baby carrier.

She was less than happy about being strapped in.

她立刻开始在草地上玩起来，而我则开始组装我的飞钓竿。

She set about immediately playing in the grass while I rigged up my fly rod.

The stream is maybe 10 feet wide here and I missed the first few fish that struck the Elkhair Cattus.

Finally, I hooked and landed a nice wild cutthroat, which never used to be in this stream when I was a kid.

以前这里全是虹鳟鱼。

It was all rainbows back in the day.

我把鱼放在凉水里，我妻子把女儿带过来。

I held the fish in the cool water while my wife brought my daughter close.

她对鱼不太感兴趣，反而更喜欢在水里玩水。

She wasn't all that interested in the fish, preferring instead to splash in the water.

鱼游走了，我决定是时候让女儿真正见识一下飞钓是怎么回事了。

The fish swam off and I decided it was time to really show my daughter what all this fly fishing stuff was about.

于是我把她放回婴儿背带里，她可不喜欢这个决定，然后我出发往下游走，去我们徒步上来时看到的那些深潭之一。

So I put her back in the baby carrier, a decision that she was not a fan of, and set off back downstream to one of the deeper pools I'd seen on our hike up.

鱼在潭尾聚集，晒着太阳。

Fish were stacked at the tail sunning themselves.

我悄悄爬到潭后面，尽量压低身子，即使背上背着孩子。

I crept up behind the pool trying to stay low even with a baby on my back.

我妻子在岸边看着，我和露丝进入了抛投范围。

My wife watched from shore while Ruth and I got into casting range.

我一开钓，Ruth就安静下来，好像还挺专注的。

Once I started casting, Ruth settled down and seemed to be paying attention.

第一次抛竿就钓到一条鱼，但它把钩吐掉了。

I hooked a fish on the first drift, but it spat the hook.

第二次抛竿，我钓上来一条胖乎乎的小彩虹鳟。

On the next drift, I hooked and landed a fat little rainbow.

我跪在河里，尽量保持平衡，别让我们俩都栽进水里。

I knelt in the river, try not to lose my balance and send us both into the drink.

这次Ruth伸手去抓鱼，我妻子就过来帮我一起给她看鱼。

Ruth reached and grabbed for the fish this time, so my wife came over and helped me show her the fish.

我们一直教Ruth要轻轻摸家里的狗，这次对鱼也重复了同样的指令。

We've tried to teach Ruth to pet our dogs gently and we repeated the same instructions with the fish.

她不太喜欢鱼黏糊糊的，一碰就叫，但鱼游走的时候她笑了。

She didn't really love how slimy it was squawking as soon as she touched it, but she laughed when the fish swam away.

接下来的半小时，我们在水潭里钓鱼，Ruth完全忘了自己又累又饿又热，还该睡午觉了。

For the next half hour, we fished the pools and Ruth forgot that she was tired, hungry, hot, and ready for a nap.

我希望这是她第一次跟我去钓鱼，以后还会有很多次，我真的希望是这样。

I like to think that this is the first of many times I'll take her fishing and I hope that's true.

我希望她会喜欢钓鱼，或者至少够爱我，等她长大一点愿意去试试。

I hope she loves it or at least loves me enough to try it out when she's old enough.

我知道她可能不会记得这一天。

I know she probably won't remember this day.

唉。

Shoot.

我们一离开河边，开始往回走的时候，她又开始哭了，因为又热又累。

As soon as we left the river and started the hike back to the truck, she went back to crying because she was hot and tired.

但就那半个小时，她看起来和我一样开心，这可能是当爸爸以来最开心的时刻了。

But for a half hour, it seemed like she was having as much fun as I was, and that might just be the highlight of being a dad so far.

第一次带孩子去水边，我觉得没有比这更好的了。

For a first time on the water with my kid, I don't think I could have asked for anything better.

She's really curious about stuff, and so it's been really fun to almost rediscover the world through her eyes.

And, of course, you know, I had to get her out fishing.

And this wasn't the first time she'd been out on the water.

我们从新生儿重症监护室回到家，然后回到怀俄明州时，她大概两个半月到三个月大。

When we got home from the NICU with her and then we got back to Wyoming, She was maybe 2.5, three months old.

I I can't really remember.

But all I remember is we...

It was a Sunday afternoon, and I took Ruth so my wife could have a nap and, you know, relax for a minute.

我们开车到山里兜风，在一个小屋前停了下来。

We went for a long drive up in the mountains, and we stopped at this lodge.

我们买了些派，然后把车停在我喜欢钓鱼的一条小溪边。

We got some pie, and then we parked by one of the creeks that I love to fish up there.

她喝完奶，心情特别好，外面天气也特别美。

And she gave her her bottle, and she was feeling all nice and happy, and it was so beautiful out.

我就说，咱们去走走吧。

I said, let's take a walk.

于是我就把她抱出来。

So I just take her out.

我抱着她，沿着小溪往上走。

I'm holding her in my arms, and we just start walking up the creek.

我一边走一边看河里的情况，还有岸边。

I'm waiting in the river and on the banks.

我想看看鱼在干什么。

I wanna see what the fish were doing.

我转过一个弯，看到有三四个一起钓鱼的人，他们都挤在一个地方。

And I come around the corner, and there's three or four dudes that were fishing together, and they were all in this one spot.

我转过弯，看到他们，他们也看到了我。

And I come around the corner, see them, and they see me.

我抱着这个小宝宝，就朝他们挥手打招呼。

And I'm holding this little baby, and I'm just waving like, hey.

钓鱼怎么样？

How's the fishing?

那场面挺有意思的。

It was kind of a funny moment.

这不是她第一次来河边，但确实是我们第一次真正一起钓鱼。

So it wasn't the first time she'd been out on the river, but it was the first time that we'd really been fishing together.

我特别兴奋。

And I'm excited.

我特别期待看看会发生什么，也想看看他会多喜欢这件事。

I'm excited to see what happens and and see how much he's gonna love it.

肯定会很有意思。

And it's gonna be interesting.

Hopefully, I'll have some tips on how to take kids fishing, because I know that's something we get asked about a lot.

所以希望我能有一些真实的经历可以和大家分享，就是她真的在钓鱼，而不是只是摸摸鳟鱼、玩玩水，享受那种我知道她肯定会有的小孩子式的乐趣。

So hopefully, I'll have some actual experiences to share with y'all where she's doing the fishing and not just touching and touching the trout and splashing the water and having having the kid kind of fun that I know she's gonna have.

但有件事我一直想记住，而且最近我和几个比我大的哥们儿聊过，他们大多数孩子都长大了，而且他们都是玩飞钓的，我的那些哥们儿。

But one thing I've been trying to remember, and I've had this chat with a few of my buddies recently who are older than me, most of their kids are grown, and they're all fly guys, my buddies.

他们一致的意见就是，你不能强迫孩子去喜欢。

And the universal consensus from them has been you can't force it on them.

你当然应该带他们去看，也应该跟他们说，嘿，我带你去看看这到底是什么，我希望你试试。

You you definitely should show it to them, and you definitely should say, hey, I'm gonna take you and show you what this is all about, and I want you to try this.

但不要强迫，因为那样孩子反而会开始反感。

But don't force it on them because that's when kids will really start to sort of resent things.

而且我知道，我小时候可能就是这样。

And I I know that was probably true for me as a kid.

It's true for me now as I'm just a man child.

Let's be honest.

I'm not a grown up.

And I I can already tell you, I'm gonna have to really, really toe that line because I love it so much.

I wanna just...

我想带她去见识所有这一切，希望她能爱上它。

I wanna take her and show her all of it, and I want her to love it.

我就想出去，你懂的，爸爸和孩子一起钓鱼，玩得开心。

And I just wanna be out, you know, dad and kid fishing and having a blast.

我特别想做那些事。

I wanna do all that.

但我知道，对我来说，不强迫她去做会很难。

But I know it's gonna be tough for me to not force it on her.

所以，希望我能记住这一点。

So, hopefully, it's something I can remember.

但如果你也遇到类似的情况，孩子慢慢到了可以带他们去体验这些事的年纪，尽量别太强迫他们。

But, you know, if you're in this similar boat where you've got some kids who are, you know, starting to come up to that point where you can show them these things, try not to force it on them too much.

I think my buddies are a 100% right about that.

And they've got kids who fish, and it's...

我觉得很大程度上是因为他们没有强迫孩子。

I think a lot of that's because they didn't force it on them.

So trying to remember that.

最后还想聊的一点是，我们经常提到LIVEREELLIFE。

And then the last thing that just talk about too is, you know, we talk a lot about LIVEREELLIFE.

那是我们的座右铭，或者说我们在VFC的口号，但这不只是我们放在网站和社交媒体上的漂亮话。

That's our motto or, you know, our our slogan here at VFC, but it's not just something fancy that we put on the website and on social media.

不是的。

No.

我们真的相信，去水边钓鱼、创造独一无二的回忆，这个理念很重要。

It's we we believe that that concept of going out on the water and making memories that you can't have anywhere else.

因为无论你是在河里、湖上、船上还是海里，用飞钓竿体验到的经历，是其他任何方式都无法给你的。

Because you're you're gonna have experiences fly fishing, whether it's in a river, on a lake, in a boat, the ocean, whatever it is, you're gonna have experiences with a fly rod that you won't have any other way.

You are interacting with the natural world in a way that the world's almost unaware of your presence, and they're...

它们就像你不在场一样自然地活动。

It's just acting as it would if you weren't there.

And that's a really special thing to get to take part in and to observe.

And these experiences and these memories, you think about the places that fly fishing takes you and how few people actually see those places.

It's really unique and really wonderful what fly fishing will do for you in those regards.

那些回忆、那些时刻、那些经历，就是LIVEREELLIFE的全部意义。

And those memories and those moments and those experiences, that's what LIVEREELLIFE is all about.

这也是VFC存在的全部原因，因为我们从小就有过这些经历。

That's the whole reason the VFC exists because we've had those experiences growing up.

if we're really gonna get down to brass tacks on it.

But the opportunities to live real life, that's that's what this stuff's all about.

而且我相信，现在有了女儿，这一切会变得越来越有趣、越来越特别，我真的很期待。

And I'm sure it's just gonna get more and more interesting and fun and special for me with my daughter now, and I'm really excited.

我很期待那一天的到来。

Looking forward to that.

但这些时刻和经历的价值，正是VFC的核心所在。

But the the value of these moments and these experiences, that's what VFC is about.

这也是我所追求的。

That's what I'm about.

You know, it's it's what I want to do and and to help everybody else do as well.

So that's just something to remember is that these these moments, cherish them because the amount of people who actually get these experiences is not a whole ton.

Like, I had no clue what it was.

So it feels normal and a part of everyday life to us, and then for so many people, it's not.
