Sync tip lines, articulated hooks, strip sets, meat whistles.

Speaker 0

The world of fly fishing streamers is full of this weird terminology, different techniques, and interesting theories, which is saying something considering we regularly talk about point flies, bounce rigs, and rod angles.

Speaker 0

But there's no denying streamer fishing is effective, especially for bigger fish.

Speaker 0

Getting started with it though can feel like you're learning a brand new sport.

Speaker 0

Now in some ways you are, but streamer fishing is a lot simpler than it appears.

Speaker 0

If you can catch fish on dry flies and nymphs, you've already got most of the skills you need.

Speaker 0

This week on Untangled, we'll walk through the basics of fishing with streamers so you'll feel comfortable with it the next time you're out on the water.

Speaker 0

This is untangled, fly fishing for everyone.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Hey, Welcome to it.

Speaker 0

This is Untangled, and I am your host, Spencer Grant.

Speaker 0

Excited to be here and chat about streamer fishing this week.

Speaker 0

I I love fishing with streamers, And I know I've got a bit of a reputation for being a dry fly enthusiast, and that's not without warrant.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

I talk about fishing dry flies all the time, but streamer fishing is equally as fun just in some different ways.

Speaker 0

I I really enjoy it.

Speaker 0

And I I do default to dry flies, but streamer fishing's my next favorite way to fly fish.

Speaker 0

It's just it's engaging in a different way, and I love the feeling of a big angry trout just t boning that streamer in the river.

Speaker 0

It's a fun, unique, engaging way to fish.

Speaker 0

So we're we're gonna get right into that.

Speaker 0

But before we cover that, I just wanna give a quick shout out and a thank you to everybody in the school group who left questions and comments about streamer fishing.

Speaker 0

When I decided that this episode of Untangled is going to be about streamers, I dropped a post in school and asked, give me your questions, give me your frustrations, what are your pain points with fish and streamers?

Speaker 0

And the response I got was incredible.

Speaker 0

Y'all knocked it out of the park and your responses really did shape the show today.

Speaker 0

So thank you all for that.

Speaker 0

And if you're not aware of what school is, best way to describe it is it's like Facebook, but it doesn't suck.

Speaker 0

No stupid politics, no dumb memes, just bunch of bunch of anglers chatting about fly fishing, sharing pictures, patterns.

Speaker 0

It's a great place to hang out and and keep the fire alive if you can't be on the water as much as you'd like to be.

Speaker 0

And, you know, speaking just for myself, I'm not on the water as much as I'd like to be, so I don't know if anybody really is.

Speaker 0

But I'll I'll drop a link.

Speaker 0

If you want to join school, there'll be a link in the show notes or right here on the screen if you're watching the video podcast.

Speaker 0

It's a fun place to go spend some time.

Speaker 0

And, again, big thank you to everybody in school who commented and helped shape this episode.

Speaker 0

I really appreciate it.

Speaker 0

So the first thing that we have got to discuss when we are fishing streamers, and this was one of the most frequently asked questions, was when should you fish a streamer, and then what type of water should you fish them in.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Fall is often considered the best time of year to fish streamers because you've got fish packing on the pounds for winter, and then a lot of trout species like your browns and your brook trout will spawn in the fall.

Speaker 0

So that means there's gonna be quite a few fish in the river who are aggressive.

Speaker 0

They're looking for a big meal, and they're a lot more willing this time of year to chase down a big streamer than they are other times of the year.

Speaker 0

So right now, fall is a great time to be out chucking streamers.

Speaker 0

In fact, Alex and I just went out with our good friend Ryan Kelly, green river fly fisher there on Instagram.

Speaker 0

We were just fishing with him a couple weeks ago and got into some pretty pretty good stretch of streamer fishing.

Speaker 0

It wasn't the best conditions for it, which we'll get into in in a minute here.

Speaker 0

But even with that working against us, we still caught some nice fish on streamers.

Speaker 0

It was a good time.

Speaker 0

But don't don't don't pigeonhole yourself into thinking that winter or pardon me, fall is the only time to fish streamers because most of winter is actually a sneaky good streamer season, especially if you live near a tailwater where the water is a pretty consistent temperature year round.

Speaker 0

Winter can be a great time to start plucking some of those fish.

Speaker 0

And then early spring can be good as well.

Speaker 0

But I've found the window is just that in my experience, in my fisheries, and this might not be the same for you, but with where I fish, the window for great streamer fishing in the spring is usually narrower than it is in the fall.

Speaker 0

So I don't focus on spring streamers as much as I do fall and winter.

Speaker 0

There is that little time of of spring runoff where it can be pretty effective.

Speaker 0

But that's that's kinda your general, you know, when.

Speaker 0

You you can also fish them anytime throughout the year when the water is a little bit off color, when it's a little bit high.

Speaker 0

But if it's a raging torrent, then all the fish are gonna be pushed pretty deep or they're gonna be in really tight pockets next to the bank.

Speaker 0

So streamer fishing might not be the most effective way to catch them then.

Speaker 0

But if the water is just a little high and a little off color, that can be great time to chuck streamers as well.

Speaker 0

And then any overcast day is also gonna be great for streamer fishing, especially if you get a nice overcast fall or winter day.

Speaker 0

Because early and late in the day when the light is low, and then that cloud cover when the cloud cover comes in too, all of all of that combines to make the fish feel a lot safer.

Speaker 0

And they're they're a lot they've they're a lot more comfortable to leave their structure, chase a streamer down, and try and eat it.

Speaker 0

Now trout, especially, are gonna expose themselves quite a lot when they chase a streamer down to eat it, so they wanna make sure they're protected from an overhead predator.

Speaker 0

It's kinda like when I'm trying to sneak a snack at night and I don't wanna share with my wife, I'm like, being real careful not to crinkle any wrappers or anything and and I don't go into the bedroom and eat it.

Speaker 0

I eat it out the kitchen like, oh, I'm sneaking this.

Speaker 0

The trout feel the same way.

Speaker 0

They they wanna know that they're safe and comfortable.

Speaker 0

And so those overcast days and then your low light situations early in the morning and late in the evening make the trout feel a lot safer about moving around.

Speaker 0

So the streamer fishing really tends to pick up quite a lot during those periods of time.

Speaker 0

If there's a really big bug hatch going on, you've got a lot of blue wings hatching or midges coming off or even trichos, then the fish generally, in in my experience, don't pay a ton of attention to those streamers at that point.

Speaker 0

They'll they'll snack on the bugs instead.

Speaker 0

But if it's just kind of a sporadic catch where you're seeing a few of them here and a few of them there and you're not really seeing heads up and risers eating those bugs or bugs aren't hatching at all because it's cold and it's windy, then that's gonna make your streamer fishing even better.

Speaker 0

If that's really the only big food source that's moving around at that point, the streamer fishing can be pretty stinking good.

Speaker 0

So just to recap all of that because I know that was a ton.

Speaker 0

I will fish streamers in fall and winter, when it's overcast, and then during high water.

Speaker 0

I won't fish streamers on bright sunny days, mid summer, or when a big hatch is coming off.

Speaker 0

I just like to keep it all within within those confines.

Speaker 0

And then something else before we move on to what type of water to fish them in, just real quick so that we're all clear.

Speaker 0

This is another question that we we got a bunch in school was, what exactly do streamers imitate?

Speaker 0

We understand that dry flies and nymphs are imitating aquatic insects, but then you pull out a, you know, a big four inch slump buster or meat whistle or whatever.

Speaker 0

What's that supposed to be?

Speaker 0

Well, streamers are meant to imitate bait fish, red side shiners, other minnows, kinda like that.

Speaker 0

Other trout, honestly, they'll they'll imitate a lot of them.

Speaker 0

They'll imitate leeches, crawdads, those bigger aquatic life forms that aren't insects, that are just cruising around, that's what your streamers are gonna imitate, those bigger ticket meal items that that your your tiny little bugs are never gonna pass for.

Speaker 0

So that the big stuff that the fish are gonna move for, that's what your streamer is tied up to imitate.

Speaker 0

Because as we know, all the trout get predatory and piscivorous, which means they'll eat other fish at some point.

Speaker 0

So they'll start snacking on little minnows.

Speaker 0

They'll cannibalize each other sometimes if they really have to.

Speaker 0

And then they love crawdads.

Speaker 0

They love leeches.

Speaker 0

So being able to imitate those, just giving you another tool in that toolbox to put flies in front of fish and make them look real.

Speaker 0

We'll make them look like something those fish are gonna go ahead and eat.

Speaker 0

So let's talk about what type of water that we need to fish these streamers in.

Speaker 0

Personally, I have the most luck in any water type except for riffles.

Speaker 0

So riffles are those shallow quick sections of a river where there's very little structure in riffles.

Speaker 0

The fish can't really hide in the riffles too much.

Speaker 0

And especially in fall and winter, the water's super low and super clear in the riffles.

Speaker 0

So finding the fish there in the winters and the falls, not the not the most common thing you're gonna see, especially all day like they will be in the summer sometimes.

Speaker 0

And this isn't to say that fish absolutely won't eat streamers and ripples, but if I'm tossing streamers during the fall, I'm targeting my runs, pools, any of the pockets of calm water near the banks, any of the seams, anything like that that I can find where it's it's just good fishy water, places where where fish are gonna hang out.

Speaker 0

Riffles are great fishy water, but not so much during fall and winter.

Speaker 0

All these other places that got just a bit more structure, a bit more cover for the fish to hang out and ambush whatever, you know, bait fish, leech, crawdad, whatever is swimming by them.

Speaker 0

So that is the type of water that I'm looking for.

Speaker 0

Really, it it's pretty similar to the type of water you'd wanna fish your nymph rigs through.

Speaker 0

That that's the kind of water you'd also want to stream or fish as well.

Speaker 0

Let's talk next about rigging upstreamers.

Speaker 0

This is another very common question that we got.

Speaker 0

I prefer to use a six weight rod for trout streamers.

Speaker 0

That's my favorite.

Speaker 0

That's my go to.

Speaker 0

Even the larger trout streamers are fine on a six weight.

Speaker 0

And then I also use a sink tip line.

Speaker 0

So a six weight with a sink tip line.

Speaker 0

That six weight rod and the six weight line, they're heavy enough that they'll handle those larger streamers just fine, but it can handle nymphing very well if you decide that you need to switch things up during the middle of the day or if you just, you know, a little bit of wind comes up, it's it's just gonna be a better rod for streamers than that five weight.

Speaker 0

Because you pick the rod that you need based on the size of flies that you're gonna throw.

Speaker 0

Five weights can throw a a pretty wide range of flies, do very well, but a six weight is really designed to handle heavier, bigger flies.

Speaker 0

So that's why I gravitate towards that for my streamer fishing.

Speaker 0

Now if you're consistently fishing a lot bigger streamers and you're checking for a lot bigger fish than most trout, if you're going after buy buy I can't talk.

Speaker 0

Podcast host that can't talk, that's embarrassing is all get out.

Speaker 0

Bass, I try to combine bass and pike together into one word there.

Speaker 0

If you're going after bass, pike, or carp, seven or an eight weight is a really good option at that point because you're throwing a little bit bigger bugs.

Speaker 0

And then they're bigger fish generally too, especially the carp can get really big.

Speaker 0

So having a stiffer heavier rod will help you land those fish more effectively.

Speaker 0

But for most trout flies that are in that size twelve to all the way down to about a two hook size, they're they're really it's really hard to beat how well a six weight will toss those.

Speaker 0

So that that's just my 2¢ on it.

Speaker 0

I do like a sync tip line because it helps get those streamers down quickly.

Speaker 0

And then the nice thing about it is that sync tip line since it's a longer piece of sinking line and it's on the tip of some floating line, it keeps that at a nice level depth for the entirety of the retrieve.

Speaker 0

So it's got a very natural presentation to those flies.

Speaker 0

If you're just trying to fish a really long leader off of a floating line just to get it to sink deep enough, you can get kind of a weird angle that the flies are being pulled up at that's not necessarily supernatural.

Speaker 0

And then it takes a lot longer for those flies to sink without the sink tip line.

Speaker 0

And if you're on a river, getting those flies to sink quickly is pretty stinking important because you're you usually don't have a huge long range of of water to fish.

Speaker 0

You've gotta get them down quick, get them to where the fish are, get in that strike zone just like we do with our nymphs, you want them down there pretty quickly.

Speaker 0

So that those are all the reasons that I go for that sink tip line.

Speaker 0

I use a line that's got a 15 foot sink tip and it sinks at about three inches per second.

Speaker 0

I found that's a pretty good all around sink tip line for the places I fish and the fish that I'm fishing to because it'll sink quickly enough in the deep spots.

Speaker 0

And then in the shallower stuff, I can just strip it a little bit faster if I need to and usually doesn't get hung up on the bottom too much.

Speaker 0

But that that's what I like to use.

Speaker 0

Now you don't absolutely need a sync tip line, especially if you're fishing smaller shallower water.

Speaker 0

A heavy streamer can work just fine in those instances, but it helps.

Speaker 0

It really does help a lot.

Speaker 0

It's worth spending the money on just buying a sync tip line.

Speaker 0

You don't have to spend a $120 on them or anything crazy like that, but a good sync tip line will help with your streamer fishing.

Speaker 0

And then as for a leader with our streamers, and I'll throw a graphic for this on the screen for those who are watching the video podcast so you can you can see this, but I don't use a tapered leader with my streamer rigs at all, and the best streamer anglers I know don't do that either.

Speaker 0

Because I've found that streamers just cast a lot better if I use about a four to five foot piece of 10 or 12 pound fluorocarbon.

Speaker 0

That chunk of lines long enough or strong enough, pardon me, that it it'll hold up to the abuse of getting bumped on all the rocks on the bottom, getting snagged or whatnot, but it also turns the flies over well.

Speaker 0

It's got enough mass to it that it'll turn that big fly over.

Speaker 0

Because if you if you try to use, like, a nine foot five x tapered leader on a big old size four slump buster, that fly, pardon me, it's got a lot of weight to it, but that tippet is so thin it's gonna zap so much of that energy out of the cast that it's really gonna pile up.

Speaker 0

It's not gonna straighten out.

Speaker 0

It's not gonna turn over very nice for you.

Speaker 0

You're gonna you're you're really gonna struggle to get that to present right.

Speaker 0

And then on top of that, you know, a fish hits it really hard and that five x leader is not super strong.

Speaker 0

It's really easy to snap that between the force of a fish hitting it and the current pulling on it, and then you pulling on it as well.

Speaker 0

So stepping up that 10 or 12 pound fluorocarbon is great.

Speaker 0

Again, I just I use like four to six feet worth of it.

Speaker 0

Just tie that on with a perfection loop to the end of my fly line or a nail knot, whatever you're using there.

Speaker 0

And then I just attach my streamers with a clinch knot.

Speaker 0

I don't really worry about loop knots on my streamers.

Speaker 0

I haven't found them to make a huge difference.

Speaker 0

I just use the clinch knot.

Speaker 0

It works well.

Speaker 0

I don't lose too many streamers to bad knots that way.

Speaker 0

So that's again, this is just what I found that works for me.

Speaker 0

So don't be afraid to play around with it and until it works better for you and your rivers, but this is what I do.

Speaker 0

So let's now move on to talking about how we cast these things and how we retrieve the streamers.

Speaker 0

And I think out of all the questions we got in school about this topic, these were probably the most common.

Speaker 0

How do I cast them and then how do I retrieve these streamers?

Speaker 0

So when you're casting, you've got the sync tip line, you've got a big streamer, there's a lot of weight involved.

Speaker 0

And with all that weight, because fly rods are very effective tools of transferring weight and turning it into energy and then shooting that line out there, you don't need to make a false cast.

Speaker 0

There's almost no reason to do that.

Speaker 0

If you're making a really long cast, you might need it, but most streamer casts also aren't that long, especially on rivers.

Speaker 0

So you really just need a single back cast and a single forward cast, and that'll get your flies out there if you're using the correct technique.

Speaker 0

Now what's that correct technique you ask?

Speaker 0

Well, let's let's get into that.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

A good way to make sure that you're you're not doing too many false casts is you don't wanna try and pick up and cast all of your line when the sink tip portion of your line is still deep underwater.

Speaker 0

That's just gonna create a lot of problems.

Speaker 0

You wanna get it up to the surface and ideally, you'll pull that sink tip portion of your line to within like a few feet of your tip top guide at the end of your rod.

Speaker 0

And then what you can do is you can strip all the way in, get that sink tip line almost all the way in, and then just make a quick little roll cast.

Speaker 0

And what this does is that gets your sink tip line on top of the water that gets lined out of the tip of your rod and it's again, clearly, it's on top of that water.

Speaker 0

It's not sinking.

Speaker 0

You're not fighting all of that tension to make your cast.

Speaker 0

Then all you have to do is make one back cast, one forward cast, and that line and that streamer, they're so heavy.

Speaker 0

They're just gonna kinda shoot out there.

Speaker 0

And then you can also go ahead and use a double haul to speed that line up a little bit and help it shoot further.

Speaker 0

But that's that's really it.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

It it really is that stinking simple.

Speaker 0

The reason you wanna make sure that you're not casting too many false casts with a streamers, a, they can be easy to tangle sometimes, then b, they're heavy and they move quickly, especially if you're double hauling.

Speaker 0

They're gonna be flying through the air.

Speaker 0

And if you're not careful, you're gonna beam yourself in the head with one of these streamers and it does not feel good.

Speaker 0

I've done that many times.

Speaker 0

Or even worse, you are going to make a cast that's not super great and your streamers gonna hit the tip of your rod and shatter it.

Speaker 0

And then if you're like me and you do that to your buddy Gene's rod, you have to hand in the rod while he's rowing the boat and say, Gene, I broke your rod.

Speaker 0

And then you feel like a jerk for the rest of the day because you broke his rod.

Speaker 0

Now, I did pay for his rod to get repaired, but still, it doesn't change the fact that I felt like a jerk for breaking his stinking rod.

Speaker 0

So that's the casting portion of it.

Speaker 0

As far as the retrieves go, the key here is just to not overthink it.

Speaker 0

And I know that's a lot easier said than done, but what I mean by this is I I saw a lot of folks asking very specific questions about retrieves where the question was like, what's the best retrieve pattern or retrieve style for such and such situation?

Speaker 0

And honestly, it depends on the day.

Speaker 0

It it really does.

Speaker 0

Some days, the fish want those streamers barely moving.

Speaker 0

They want them super deep and just twitching.

Speaker 0

Other days, they want them moving a little bit faster.

Speaker 0

They're not gonna commit and make that eat unless that streamer's really cooking through the water.

Speaker 0

So it's on you to figure out what that is.

Speaker 0

Now, personally, what I like to do is I start the day out with a relatively slow retrieve.

Speaker 0

I'll do a couple of quick short strips.

Speaker 0

I'll pause for a second, then I'll do one long strip.

Speaker 0

It's a little bit slower.

Speaker 0

Then I'll repeat that pattern.

Speaker 0

I'll retrieve my flies pretty consistently with that pattern until I start getting fish.

Speaker 0

And then once the fish eat, then I'll try to mimic that same retrieve until the action stops.

Speaker 0

And if if it stops and I go back to tweaking it a little bit, I'll speed things up.

Speaker 0

I'll go really really short and slow and then really fast and longer.

Speaker 0

You know, whatever it is.

Speaker 0

However, I want to change that retrieve speed up, I I will just continue tweaking it throughout the day until I catch fish, then I'll try and mimic that as much as I possibly can until I quit catching fish, and then I'll, you know, change things up again and again.

Speaker 0

And that's really the name of the game with streamer fishing is just figuring out how they want it, how deep they want it.

Speaker 0

Keep really just make sure you keep your streamer in the water.

Speaker 0

You keep playing with the speed, especially if you see a lot of fish following it, but maybe not committing to it.

Speaker 0

Just keep changing the speed.

Speaker 0

Keep moving it.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

Don't just don't don't hold it out of the water and think, keep moving it, keep playing around with it.

Speaker 0

You're gonna find that retrieval speed pretty quickly.

Speaker 0

And again, don't overthink it.

Speaker 0

You're just trying to make it move through the water like some kind of bait fish or something.

Speaker 0

You're also trying to trigger a predatory strike, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

Just play with it as much as you possibly can.

Speaker 0

Now when I'm wade fishing, I really like to toss my streamers up towards the opposite bank.

Speaker 0

I'll do that at a pretty sharp angle, and then I will strip quickly downstream through the run or the pool that I was targeting.

Speaker 0

And then I'll let my streamer swing a little bit at the end of the drift below me, and then I'll just go ahead and make another cast.

Speaker 0

It's a great way to cover quite a bit of water.

Speaker 0

It gets a lot of action to it.

Speaker 0

And then it's a very simple way to retrieve because you're just going pretty quick, especially if you're wade fishing a smaller river.

Speaker 0

If you come onto a big pool or whatever, that's when you can you can play things a little bit differently.

Speaker 0

You'll work with speed and the depth and whatnot, but the faster runs and whatnot, that's when you can that's when you just throw it up there at that sharper angle.

Speaker 0

Just pull it through the water, keep connected with that fly, and then let it swing a little bit.

Speaker 0

And just an example of this, back when I lived in Utah, there was this little stream that I used to fish.

Speaker 0

Loved it.

Speaker 0

And one day I just said, I'm gonna chuck streamers on it.

Speaker 0

I don't know why, but I just wanna go chuck a streamer on it.

Speaker 0

And it's not too wide.

Speaker 0

I mean, we're talking maybe fifteen fifteen, 20 feet wide at the most.

Speaker 0

So I would do exactly what I just described.

Speaker 0

I would throw my streamer to the opposite bank pretty at a pretty sharp angle, and then I just strip really quickly in all of that nice kinda slack water against the bank.

Speaker 0

And then once the streamer got into the current, I'd let it swing, I'd pull it up to me, and I just repeat that as I walked up the river.

Speaker 0

And I would, most of the time, I would toss it to that opposite bank, strip it once or twice, and a fish would be on like that.

Speaker 0

It would just come out and smack it because they're holding in that water between the main current and the bank.

Speaker 0

They're just hanging out.

Speaker 0

They'd see that.

Speaker 0

They'd come up and hit it.

Speaker 0

And was never anything crazy.

Speaker 0

Never never any special retrieval pattern.

Speaker 0

I wasn't counting my retrieves.

Speaker 0

I was just throwing it out there, moving it, and and just playing with that fly.

Speaker 0

So that is the hopefully, that drives the point home of just continue to to mess with it and continue to tweak that retrieve as much as you can throughout the day.

Speaker 0

好了。

Alright.

Speaker 0

We've also got to talk about setting the hook and then feeling bites.

Speaker 0

This is another question we got.

Speaker 0

But when that fish bites your streamer, you're gonna know.

Speaker 0

I I I promise.

Speaker 0

It's like when I show up to go fish somewhere, you're gonna know I'm there because all the Diet Coke's gonna be cleared out of every store within, like, a 10 mile radius.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

What it's really gonna feel like though is it's gonna feel like something is yanking the rod out of your hands Or at a at a bare minimum, it's gonna feel like there's something on the end of your line, something tugging on it.

Speaker 0

So when that happens, you don't want to do that traditional trout set where you hold your line tight and lift your rod firmly but quickly up into the air.

Speaker 0

That's just gonna rip your streamer out of a trout's mouth.

Speaker 0

What you wanna do instead is do this thing that's called a strip set.

Speaker 0

So when the fish bites, what you're gonna do is you're gonna strip really hard with your line hand.

Speaker 0

You're just gonna pull, pull, pull really hard, drive that hook point home.

Speaker 0

And then once you've made that couple of hard strips, you can use your rod to either side.

Speaker 0

Usually, bend it in the direction that you're stripping the line, and then do that at a side angle, and that's gonna help drive that hook point home.

Speaker 0

You're gonna feel it.

Speaker 0

You can bend the rod to the side a little bit, help drive that hook point home.

Speaker 0

And then once the fish is on, that's when you can lift the tip a little bit if you need to, but keeping that side pressure on them is a more effective way to fight the fish anyways.

Speaker 0

So that's that's strip set.

Speaker 0

It it is undoing the muscle memory of the hook sets with your nymphs and your dry flies.

Speaker 0

And I'd probably see this trip more people up than anything else.

Speaker 0

And it's hard to remember.

Speaker 0

I forget it sometimes.

Speaker 0

When me, Ryan, and Alex were out fishing streamers like I was mentioning earlier, I trout set on a couple of the bites that I got because it's just so ingrained.

Speaker 0

You have to remind yourself, k, no.

Speaker 0

Strip set.

Speaker 0

Strip set.

Speaker 0

So it takes a little bit of time, but that that's how you gotta do it.

Speaker 0

And then lastly, let's talk about size and colors.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

There's a million different streamer patterns out there and I know a lot of folks who swear by this one or by that one.

Speaker 0

And in all honesty, I've had a lot of luck with a lot of different streamer patterns over the years.

Speaker 0

So I think it's a lot more about how you fish it than really what pattern you're using.

Speaker 0

Because at the end of the day, you're using that streamer to mimic the the movement and the shape of something in the water, but you're also triggering a predatory strike.

Speaker 0

And a lot of times, you'll it'll surprise you.

Speaker 0

If you fish the streamers a lot, you'll end up catching a a fish where the streamer's bigger than the fish or, like, the same size as the fish.

Speaker 0

And you wonder, dude, what what convinced you that you could eat this?

Speaker 0

Why did you come and freight train it like that?

Speaker 0

So you'll see that often.

Speaker 0

So that's another reason why I'm not super sold on patterns mattering a ton.

Speaker 0

Now for things like Atlantic salmon or steelhead fishing or whatnot, the patterns definitely do matter, especially color and whatnot.

Speaker 0

But for a lot of your travel fishing, I I don't it's hard for me to sit here and tell you, oh, well, use these ones and don't use these ones.

Speaker 0

It really is just about finding finding ones you like, finding ones that the fish around you like as well.

Speaker 0

I tend to favor a lot of patterns that got a lot of marabou or rabbit on them along with a lot of weight, and then not not a ton of flash.

Speaker 0

I I like some, but not I don't like it overdone.

Speaker 0

I want a lot of movement in my streamers.

Speaker 0

That's what the fish where I am fishing, that's what they seem to like.

Speaker 0

They like a lot of movement, a lot of pulsating movement that you get with the rabbit and the marabou.

Speaker 0

But for you, it could be different.

Speaker 0

Your fish could like something a little bit more understated.

Speaker 0

They might like the clowzer minnow, for example, which it's funny.

Speaker 0

The Clouser's great.

Speaker 0

I've used it to catch some nice salmon, some nice dolivard up in Alaska.

Speaker 0

But then when I throw Clousers on the Green River in Utah, for example, they never really do too well for me there for whatever reason.

Speaker 0

Even though they're a great fly, I've just never had them produce a ton of fish for me in that river.

Speaker 0

So every fishery is gonna be different, and it's a lot it's a lot more of playing with the different patterns and just seeing what your fish like more so than it is, oh, I've gotta use the meat whistle or I've gotta use the Gonga, nothing else.

Speaker 0

It's it's what are the fish like?

Speaker 0

好的。

K.

Speaker 0

And then just fish that one.

Speaker 0

And then colors, I I do pay attention to the rule of if it's a bright day, you wanna fish bright flies.

Speaker 0

And if it's a dark day, you wanna fish dark flies.

Speaker 0

It's an old saying in fly fishing, and that really seems to work for me.

Speaker 0

But I also tend to just fish a lot of flies that are white and gold or white and brown.

Speaker 0

I like a lot of that white.

Speaker 0

I'll always have some black on hand, but I usually go to that white and gold or white and brown coloration first because I really like the way those colors contrast in the water.

Speaker 0

I think it stands out very well from everything else, especially in the low clear water of winter and fall.

Speaker 0

So that that's why I'll go that route.

Speaker 0

But again, your fish might like something else.

Speaker 0

So all about experimentation, just looking to see what you can find.

Speaker 0

And that was a lot of information.

Speaker 0

But hopefully, I answered a bunch of your streamer questions there.

Merrick from Alabama has got our first question this week writes in and says, hey, Spencer.

Speaker 0

I started fly fishing in April this year and picked out a starter kit online that has a basic nine foot five way rod and standard reel, fly line, etcetera that came with it.

Speaker 0

I'd love to upgrade some things for Christmas this year, but have no idea where to start.

Speaker 0

What would you say is more important to invest in as far as the essentials go?

Speaker 0

Rod, reel, fly line, etcetera.

Speaker 0

And where would you start learning and narrowing down what is best for you?

Speaker 0

Really love the show.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

It is a good question.

Speaker 0

Thanks for sending it on in.

Speaker 0

A lot of folks a lot of folks will tell you that you need to upgrade your fly line first off and that you should spend some money there and I I don't know that I really agree with that to be completely honest.

Speaker 0

I I we hear this a lot and I'm not saying that quality of fly line doesn't matter be because it does, but not so much the quality of the line that matters as it is the taper of the line.

Speaker 0

Rods that are a lot faster in action, so they bend less.

Speaker 0

They need a heavier, more aggressively tapered line to load them properly.

Speaker 0

And then your rods that are slower that bend more, they're gonna load better with more standard traditional tapers.

Speaker 0

So then you've also gotta factor in, are you throwing dry flies with that line?

Speaker 0

Are you tossing streamers with it?

Speaker 0

Heavy nymph rigs?

Speaker 0

Or do you want a line that's gonna do kinda everything for you?

Speaker 0

You know, personally, I think you could go with, like, the scientific anglers mastery MPX line.

Speaker 0

It's probably the nicest line that a lot of anglers will need and it's like $80, which it's not super cheap.

Speaker 0

I'm not you know, $80 is still $80 even in 2025, but it's also not the $120 of the amplitude lines or the $180 that they want for those magnitude lines that Scientific Anglers just released.

Speaker 0

It's you know, that that I I wouldn't spend more than like 80, maybe a $100 on them.

Speaker 0

And I'm really honestly of the opinion that you should upgrade your rod first before you upgrade your line because even on my high end thousand plus dollar rods that I own, I fish lines that are like 80 to $100 on them, which again, I'm not discounting how expensive fly lines are these days, but, you know, relative to everything else in the industry, those cheaper lines have performed just as well for me as the $120 lines.

Speaker 0

So it really is matching the taper to the rod that matters a ton more than it is just upgrading the line and thinking that's gonna do a lot for you on a subpar rod.

Speaker 0

Because the fly rod is the most important tool that you're gonna use out there on the water.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

It it controls where your line goes, which is where your flies go.

Speaker 0

So it plays a huge part in your accuracy.

Speaker 0

And then to a large degree, your fly rod also is going to control how your line lands on the water, which controls how your flies are presented.

Speaker 0

And then on top of that, your rod completely dictates what style of fishing you can do effectively during the day.

Speaker 0

If all you have is a seven and a half foot three weight, you're gonna have a really tough time throwing long nymph rigs and fishing them super deep because that rod is too short and light to handle a really big heavy rig and then those long mends that you need for that kind of fishing.

Speaker 0

So I I would upgrade to a medium fast five weight, nine foot five weight that's got enough backbone for small streamers, little bit larger nymph rigs, but it still has enough give in its action.

Speaker 0

It's still slow enough that it's gonna present dry flies very well on top of that.

Speaker 0

And just a couple weeks ago, actually, Alex and I, we were out fishing.

Speaker 0

We had our fly flinger rigged up with a dry dropper set up and we were throwing pretty long cast from what we were on our boat out on the river.

Speaker 0

But Alex also uses the fly flinger all the time on a lot smaller water and that's the rod that he caught a 24 inch brown on this year.

Speaker 0

So or no.

Speaker 0

It was last last year.

Speaker 0

So that medium fast nine foot five weight.

Speaker 0

So that that's what I would upgrade to.

Speaker 0

That's just where I would be.

Speaker 0

Definitely go check out the fly flinger if you're interested.

Speaker 0

But your fly rod is the most critical piece of gear.

Speaker 0

That's what I would upgrade first.

Speaker 0

And then if you wanna learn more, because you also mentioned learning more about rods, reels, and line and all of that stuff, there's a we've done a bunch of we've done a bunch of content on this.

Speaker 0

I I would recommend that you watch episodes two and seven of our beginner master class.

Speaker 0

And then episode one zero one of Untangled.

Speaker 0

I go into detail on all the gear there.

Speaker 0

And then we've also got a fly lines explained video.

Speaker 0

I will link all of these in the show notes and they're gonna answer and explain a lot of the why behind everything that I just told you.

Speaker 0

So hopefully that's helpful, but thanks so much for sending a question on in.

Speaker 0

Jared from Utah has got our next question.

Speaker 0

Writes in and says, I have been fishing a nearby smaller Freestone because the Provo River has been kicking my butt.

Speaker 0

I can consistently catch six to 10 inch fish in the pocket water and seams in this Freestone River.

Speaker 0

Moving upriver, there is a long smooth section that I can see tons of fish in, some of them decently sized for this small of a river.

Speaker 0

I cannot catch anything on this smooth section even using the same flies that were killing it in rougher sections.

Speaker 0

Is there a strategy change that I need to implement to get the ones in the smooth section?

Speaker 0

Jared, yeah, the provo's got a habit of kicking people's butts, taking their names, dignity, their will to live.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

It's not that bad, but it can be really frustrating sometimes.

Speaker 0

I cut my teeth there.

Speaker 0

I I understand what you're saying.

Speaker 0

I will tell you though that fishing at Morrigan turn you into a great angler because those are very pressured to fish.

Speaker 0

They're very particular fish.

Speaker 0

And if you can wrangle those, you're gonna be very surprised at just how well all the techniques you learn on a place like the Provo is gonna carry over to other fisheries too.

Speaker 0

So I I wouldn't give up on it because it is spending time there will make you a better angler.

Speaker 0

But what you're describing is a classic case of something that I I ran into all the time when I started out fly fishing.

Speaker 0

I'd be I'd be killing it.

Speaker 0

I'd be pulling fish out of every piece of water.

Speaker 0

I think I was the greatest thing on the river, and then I'd get to a pool or I'd get to this deep run and the action just stops and I feel like I don't know what I'm doing.

Speaker 0

I feel like Chris Farley in that SNL sketch where he was interviewing Paul McCartney.

Speaker 0

You remember you remember how you were in the Beatles?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That was cool.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's just he had no clue what he was doing.

Speaker 0

I felt this I feel the same way.

Speaker 0

But something that you mentioned here that I wanna key in on, you talk about even using the same flies that you were killing it with in rougher sections or sections where there's more current or movement on your flies.

Speaker 0

Now if you're fishing larger flies in pocket water, you're fishing them because you want a bigger dry fly to float a bigger nymph, sometimes those big flies can make such a splash in calmer water that they're gonna spook the fish.

Speaker 0

So at a bare minimum, I would try sizing down on the flies that you are using in pocket water.

Speaker 0

So if you're using a 14 in the pockets, go to a 16 or 18 of that same pattern.

Speaker 0

Just size them down a little bit and see what happens.

Speaker 0

Because that might be it.

Speaker 0

The fly might just be too big that it's making too much of a disturbance on that smooth glassy bit of the river and the fish are getting spooked by it.

Speaker 0

That does happen sometimes.

Speaker 0

The bigger problem though is probably your your overall presentation.

Speaker 0

And this is not a knock.

Speaker 0

Again, this is something that I learned the hard way.

Speaker 0

And and luckily, I I finally figured it out.

Speaker 0

Otherwise, I'd still be out there like, what what's going on?

Speaker 0

But think about it for a sec.

Speaker 0

When you're fishing pocket water, those rougher bits of the river you described, how long do fish really have to look at that fly and decide if it's real and then if they're gonna eat it?

Speaker 0

It probably not much not much time at all.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

It's a very quick, very brief moment that they work with.

Speaker 0

They've gotta make quick decisions.

Speaker 0

When the water slows down though, they've got a lot more time to look at your fly and see if it's the size, shape, and then even the color match to what's really hatching.

Speaker 0

There there'll also be a lot more prone to spook if you're standing too close to them, which you're standing close to the pockets, but there's so much turbulence that they don't they they you can get a little bit closer.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

On those long flat sections, it's so still they can see everything.

Speaker 0

It's so clear.

Speaker 0

Might not be able to get away with it at at that point.

Speaker 0

And then if your fly line hits the water too hard, that can spook the fish.

Speaker 0

And then if you land your fly line on a fish that's rising, that will spook the fish as well.

Speaker 0

So it's all these little things that you don't necessarily think about in pocket water because in pocket water, it's more about just make sure you get it in the pocket and it doesn't have drag.

Speaker 0

You don't have to worry so much about where you stand or how much line or how hard the line's hitting the water because there's enough disturbance that you can kinda get away with sloppier presentations in bucket water.

Speaker 0

You go to those smoother sections of the river, you've really gotta get that dialed in.

Speaker 0

And and remember, your job is put flies in front of fish and make them look real.

Speaker 0

So if you suddenly stop catching fish, and especially if the water type has changed like it has in your situation you described here, then the problem is almost certainly going to be a presentation issue because you've been putting that flies in front that fly in front of fish and they've been eating it so it'll look real.

Speaker 0

And unless something huge changes, why would they quit eating it?

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So that's why it comes back to the presentation.

Speaker 0

It doesn't look real anymore.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

Focus on getting a drag free drift, size down your tippet if you need to.

Speaker 0

Don't line the trout and land line on rising trout.

Speaker 0

Stay low so the fish don't see you.

Speaker 0

Make your cast count.

Speaker 0

And then if all of that stuff doesn't work, then you can start changing flies out.

Speaker 0

Then then you you can experiment with different patterns because I I will say there there's a I fish this river an awful lot like the one you're talking about, and there's this big beaver pond where the fish hold up in it.

Speaker 0

A lot of the big fish, but that pond's got a bit more current moving through it than a lot of beaver ponds do.

Speaker 0

The flies don't just sit there that they actually drift.

Speaker 0

But what I've found on that pond in particular, and it it it is.

Speaker 0

It's just a big beaver pond and then pocket water everywhere else on this river.

Speaker 0

But I've found that the fish there, they want smaller flies.

Speaker 0

I need to fish a longer leader so they don't spook from that.

Speaker 0

And they're especially keyed in on the mergers of whatever is hatching.

Speaker 0

So that that that's how I've cracked the code on that little bit of water.

Speaker 0

In the pocket water on the rest of the stream, the adult version of whatever's hatching paired with the nymph as the dropper below it usually produces great.

Speaker 0

But on those long slow sections of that little creek, I really I have to size down.

Speaker 0

I've gotta switch to the merger and that most often pays off for me.

Speaker 0

So maybe give that a try as well.

Speaker 0

Hopefully, that answers your question.

Speaker 0

Thanks so much for sending it in.

Speaker 0

Kim from Colorado's got our next question.

Speaker 0

Writes in and says, every once in a while, I'll hook a good fish and it will take off upstream and go towards the far bank.

Speaker 0

I always keep my rod tip up to keep tension, but the bigger fish that do this make it extremely hard to keep within netting distance.

Speaker 0

What should I be doing to make the this easier or more effective so I can land these fish?

Speaker 0

Should I try to keep the fish I hook downstream of me?

Speaker 0

And if I hook them in a different circumstance, what should I do?

Speaker 0

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Speaker 0

You guys are rock stars and I really appreciate all the hard work you put into showing all of us what fly fishing is and what it can be.

Speaker 0

Cam, thank you for the kind words.

Speaker 0

And first thing you've gotta do, pack up, leave Colorado, you gotta go to Montana, you gotta catch a wild Montana trout.

Speaker 0

You gotta learn the ways of wild Montana trout up there in Big Sky Country because I hear that if you can catch some wild Montana trout, the rest of the trout will just bow down to your greatness, especially all those stocked fish in Colorado.

Speaker 0

I'm kidding, obviously.

Speaker 0

This is a really good question.

Speaker 0

And Alex and I just filmed some content about fighting fish and how to how to do this.

Speaker 0

So it's it's pretty fresh in my mind here.

Speaker 0

So what you wanna do when you're fighting fish, number one, is you've gotta keep tension on the line.

Speaker 0

So you you got that nailed down.

Speaker 0

You talked about that in your description here.

Speaker 0

But if you don't keep tension on the line, if tension slips for even a minute, even with barbed hooks, it's very easy for that hook to slide right out of the fish's mouth and boom, you don't have a fish on anymore and it's frustrating, it's discouraging, it's disappointing, it's all the bad adjectives we wanna throw at it.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

So tension has to happen.

Speaker 0

Now the next thing to think about is when you're fighting fish on a fly rod, you're not really fighting the fish so much as you are guiding the fish towards you by using pressure.

Speaker 0

So what I mean by that is when you hook into a fish on conventional fishing gear, you've got a really stiff rod and usually pretty pretty tough line.

Speaker 0

You can just kinda pull the fish where you need them to go.

Speaker 0

They'll they'll throw it sometimes, but you can usually yank on those fish a lot more than you do on a fly rod.

Speaker 0

That's because on a fly rod, you've got usually lighter lines, smaller hooks.

Speaker 0

You you've gotta let the fish fight itself a little bit.

Speaker 0

So you wanna think more of I'm trying to guide the fish where I want it and a lot less of I'm trying to fight the fish and force it here.

Speaker 0

We're just out, like I mentioned, just not too long ago fishing and looked into a decent fish on a dry fly and it swam right towards the boat.

Speaker 0

So I strip line and I kept tension on it as best I could.

Speaker 0

And then I got under the boat and it just kinda sat there.

Speaker 0

It wouldn't come out from under the boat.

Speaker 0

It didn't wanna move at all.

Speaker 0

And so I really had to get creative with those rod angles, but I knew if I pulled on it too much, I was going to probably break the line at that point.

Speaker 0

So what I really had to do is I just had to figure out, okay, how do I get pressure to get it to move again?

Speaker 0

And then once the fish started moving, then I used the the rod to apply side pressure to get that fish to come to me.

And if you don't know what I'm talking about with side pressure, when the fish is running, if you keep that rod tip straight high in the air like you described, you're only really using the tip of the rod to fight the fish.

Speaker 0

And that's not the most effective way to use your fly rod because the strongest part of your fly rod is the butt section of the rod.

Speaker 0

So to engage that butt section and to use the lifting and pulling power that's in the lower portion of the rod, what you do is you turn the rod to the side.

Speaker 0

So you're still keeping tension on the fish, on the fly, and everything, but you move that rod to the side that engages all of the rod.

Speaker 0

You got lifting and pulling power.

Speaker 0

You can really help that fish move and guide it to where you want it to be.

Speaker 0

So that's what I mean by side pressure.

Speaker 0

And then last but not least, don't let the fish get downstream of you on a fly rod.

Speaker 0

That's just a recipe for losing them.

Speaker 0

It happens all the time when they get downstream of me and it's really frustrating.

Speaker 0

They'll they'll just make a run and sometimes they do.

Speaker 0

They just get downstream of you and there's nothing you can do.

Speaker 0

When they do make those downstream runs, I like to try and move.

Speaker 0

I'll I'll run down the river, run down the bank, whatever I have to do, and try and get that fish back upstream of me.

Speaker 0

But I generally want those fish upstream of me because that's when I have the most control over them, and I'm pulling at the right angle to where my fly is being driven into their mouth instead of pulling it out of their mouth, which is what happens when you're fighting them from when they're downstream of you.

Speaker 0

So hopefully, those little tips will help you out, Cam.

Speaker 0

And thank you to everybody who sent in their questions this week because it is now time to wrap up our q and a portion and go into the live real life moment of this week's show.

Speaker 0

Every week here at Untangled, we end the show by sharing a story and a picture from someone out there in the VFC audience who is living real life, spending time on the water, learning, fishing, just having a great time.

Speaker 0

We love to see what y'all are up to, to hear about it.

Speaker 0

It's just it's what makes the world go round here at VFC.

Speaker 0

And this week's LIVEREELLIFE moment is from Kenny who writes in and says, a few days after Christmas twenty twenty three, I was up fishing a river in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Speaker 0

At this point, I had only been fly fishing for about six months and still consider myself new to the sport.

Speaker 0

This river is known for getting a lot of activity and the fish can be very picky, but are also known for getting very big.

Speaker 0

Me and my buddy came to the section of the river where everything slowed way down and ran over a deep gravel bed with very few features.

Speaker 0

On the far side of the river, there is one big rock that created a beautiful pocket, and I just knew there was fish sitting in the soft water.

Speaker 0

I slowly made my way across the river fishing the gravel bed, not expecting much.

Speaker 0

I finally got across and was standing between belly button and chest deep and threw a few casts on the scene created by the rock and nothing.

Speaker 0

I was fishing a Pat's rubber legs with a small black midge pattern behind it and came to the realization that I wasn't sinking enough.

Speaker 0

I had no idea how to add split shot to my rig and was too lazy to tie on a heavier stone fly.

Speaker 0

All of a sudden, I got the idea to cast it further above the rock and throw a huge upstream mend to pull the indicator upstream and allow the flies to catch up to the indicator and sink deeper.

Speaker 0

Sure enough, the first time I do this, the indicator slams down and I set the hook on this beautiful brown trout.

Speaker 0

Me and my buddy took much longer to net this fish than I like to admit, but we eventually got it landed and got a rough measurement of somewhere just over 20 inches and then safely released the fish.

Speaker 0

I'd have been fly fishing for over a year and a half and although it's not a lot of time, I've caught a decent amount of memorable fish, but can safely say this one tops them all and likely will for a long time.

Speaker 0

Kenny, that is awesome.

Speaker 0

Way to problem solve your way out on the river, man.

Speaker 0
