So you're in the market for a new fly rod, whether you're a beginner or you've been doing this fly fishing thing for a while.

Let's talk about fly rod action.

And I I promise this is a much simpler concept than you might think.

You don't need to have your eyes glaze over.

You don't need to get that same thousand yard stare that you got in math class, and they started pulling out quadratic equations and, you know, I they made me think.

Yeah.

Because I I remember asking point blank when we got quadratic equations or expressions or whatever the freak they are.

I remember asking my math teacher point blank, when am I ever gonna use this crap?

And he rattled off a list of, oh, well, you know, this is very important for and I tuned him out.

I've never once run into a quadratic expression outside of academia.

And thankfully, fly rod action is a lot more useful, has real life applications to it unlike math class.

So the point is, don't don't worry.

It is a little bit more Well, not a little bit.

It is a lot easier to understand than all of that junk.

Because once you understand what fly rod action means, you'll understand a bit more on on how that affects the way the rod behaves on the water.

And all of that is key to picking the right fly rod for whatever job you're trying to do that day.

And, you know, part of the reason I've got so many fly rods, and I I own way too many.

But the flip side of that is I love having certain rods that excel at certain situations.

Yeah.

For example, there's three different four weights I own that I love to fish with.

One of them is really short.

It's a six foot four weight.

So it's really good for small water where I don't need to reach far to high stick.

I don't need to throw cast past maybe 25, 30 feet if I'm really pushing it with that rod.

It's just a great rod for those instances, especially because shorter rods are very accurate.

But the trade off that you have is the shorter you go with the rod, the the less control you have over the line, the less power you have.

So you can't cast very far very accurately.

But within a certain distance, they can be deadly with how accurate they are.

So I've got that little six foot four weight.

It's a lot of fun to fish in the small small small water.

Then I've got another four weight that's seven foot eleven inches, so it's almost two feet longer than the six footer.

And with that rod, you know, I could reach more pockets with it.

I can high stick.

I can mend a little bit more effectively with it because I've got more rod to lift and move fly line.

But the big difference is I can cast further with more accuracy than with that six footer.

So if I'm gonna be throwing cast out to 40 feet or maybe even 50, if I'm really pushing it with that rod, This seven foot eleven four weight's got the backbone to do that.

It's it's a little bit quicker of a rod, and we'll get into that in just a minute.

We'll we'll define that in just a minute, but it it's a little bit quicker of a rod so I can handle even a smaller dry dropper setup on that seven foot eleven four weight.

You you know, some rods are just too soft or too slow, which again, define that here in just a sec that they really aren't great for doing much more than dry fly work, but this one man, it hits that sweet spot.

I can do a little bit of both.

And then finally, the last one that I really love fishing with, I've got an eight and a half foot four weight.

That's my go to if I'm gonna fish dry flies on larger rivers because it's got the length I need.

It's almost like a nine footer.

And you may not understand, again, slow action, bending all the way down to the cork, what does that all mean?

That's not the goal.

What I wanted to do was illustrate how certain rods excel at certain situations.

So we've got one rod that does great on small water, another rod that does great on medium water, another rod that does great on bigger water, and they all have trade offs.

The rod that's awesome on small water, it's super accurate, but you can't cast very far with it.

The rod that's really good, that eight and a half foot four weight, that's really good on bigger water.

It's awesome, but it doesn't do great in the wind because it's such a slow action rod.

So the more you learn about rod action, rod behavior, rod design, the more you can start to see, k.

You can collect as many as you want, but you can also get rods that fit a very specific purpose.

Do I need this many rods to do that?

No.

Because there's a lot of rods that will do all these things that I've mentioned.

They'll fish the small water great and the big water well.

不过，拥有一件非常专业的工具来完成特定任务，确实挺有意思的。

But there is something fun about having a very specialized tool to to pull that off.

这有点像做木工，我也稍微接触过一点。

It's it's kinda like if you do any woodworking, which I've I've done, I I dabble a little bit.

I've made some cribs and jewelry boxes and stuff.

我做的那个婴儿床，需要在床板背面开一些槽，做成那种企口板的样子。

And the one crib I made, I needed to cut out some grooves to do, like, a tongue and groove style paneling on the back of the crib.

And there's a couple different ways to do that.

You could cut it with a router.

It's usually gonna be the most effective way to do it, but I did it with a dado stack on a table saw because that's all I had.

I didn't have a router table at the time.

So it's kinda like that where with fly rods, you you can do things a couple there's multiple tools you have to do things a few different ways.

Right?

But you pick the one that you enjoy to use the most.

And I don't know that I necessarily love the table saw the most.

I I really love the router plane, the hand plane that I've got, but this is not a woodworking show.

So I will stop right there because I could go way down that rabbit hole as well.

But it's that same concept where you can pick different rods to do different things.

And that's what I was trying to illustrate with all of that at the beginning.

So now I've given you a taste for that.

Let's go ahead and actually define rod action.

We'll talk about what rods are made from as well, and then we're gonna tie that into, alright, how do they behave on the river?

What does this mean for me?

So fly rod action.

简单来说，调性指的就是抛竿时鱼竿弯曲的程度。

Simply, all this refers to is how much the rod bends while it's casting.

所以快调竿只在竿尖部分弯曲。

So fast action rods only bend in the tip section.

也就是说，抛竿时大约前三分之一的竿身会明显弯曲。

So about the top third of the rod is going to bend deeply during the cast.

中快调竿的弯曲范围是从竿尖一直延伸到竿身的一半位置。

Medium fast rods, they bend from about the tip down to halfway down the length of that rod.

而慢调竿则是从竿尖一直弯到握把处的软木部分。

And then slow action rods, bend from the tip all the way down to the cork.

这样理解对我来说最直观。

That's the easiest way to visualize it for me.

不过你也可以换个角度想，比如想象你在做抛竿动作。

But another way that you could envision it is, say, imagine you're casting stroke.

You're casting forward and then backwards.

The rod's bending during each part of that casting stroke.

Fast action rods bend back to the baseline, so they bend back to straight up and down much quicker than slow action rods do.

That's just another way to visualize this concept of rod action that we're talking about.

Now fly rod action can be fairly dependent on what type of material it's built from.

Most fly rods today are made from graphite.

Graphite does tend to be a stiffer material.

That said, there are some beautiful slow action graphite rods out there.

I have a few in my collection.

You were we played around with some slower action graphite rods here at VFC, and I'll talk about that more in a minute.

But the slower action graphite tends to be the exception more so than the rule.

Most graphite rods are medium to fast action.

That that's where graphite really sits, and it does a great job in that market.

Fiberglass is another popular popular material, and it's usually pretty slow.

Some of the new fiberglass comp compositions they've come up with, they might call them fast glass.

You might have heard or seen them described that way.

They might be a little bit closer to a medium rod than they are to slow, but these rods still bend a ton.

Fiberglass has a ton of flex to it.

And I personally prefer medium and slower action rods.

It's just what I've always liked.

I learned on rods that were like that, so that's just what I'm comfortable with.

But even with that, I don't really like fiberglass too much because I feel like it's so bendy.

It's so wobbly.

It's almost like casting a noodle.

I I just don't feel like I've got a lot of control over my line with fiberglass rods, and I have fished quite a few of the modern rods, some of the retro glass rods.

我知道肯定有人强烈反对我的观点，他们会说玻璃竿特别棒，控线能力很强，对此我并不怀疑他们。

And I know folks out there who will vehemently disagree with me on this and tell me that glass is amazing and you have tons of line control, and I don't doubt them.

I think it fits their casting style and casting stroke very well.

只是它跟我合不来罢了。

It just does not mesh with me.

玻璃竿确实不是我的最爱，不太合我的口味。

Glass just isn't my favorite, not my cup of tea.

I'm not trying to talk anybody out of it.

Just explaining why it's not something that I really ever talk about a lot and won't really spend a lot of time today talking about either because I just don't like it very much.

Now the least common material to get a fly rod made out of is gonna be bamboo.

在玻璃纤维出现之前，飞钓竿一直都是用这种材料做的。

And this is what fly rods were built from until fiberglass came onto the scene.

后来玻璃纤维流行起来，火了好几十年，直到石墨材料进入市场并迅速占据主导地位。

And then fiberglass was there for it was big for about twenty, years until graphite really kinda blew onto the market and took over.

Bamboo is really, really slow action, but I like it a lot because it tends to be more stable.

So I feel like I've got more line control with it, and that's something I'll dive into in detail here in just a sec.

But some fly rods, some bamboo rods can be described as fast or crisp, but that's really relative to bamboo itself.

It's just a very slow material.

There there's no getting around it.

If you ever have the opportunity to cast a bamboo rod, I definitely think you should.

Bamboo is not for everybody.

I've got a couple of good fishing buddies who just don't like it at all, and that's fine.

But I do think everyone should cast it at least once just to see.

I think it's a very unique experience, a very interesting experience to cast a bamboo rod, and who knows?

You might fall in love with it.

But I I love them.

I think they're ton of fun to fish with.

So that's rod action.

It's how much the rod bends during the cast, and we know what materials rods are built from, and we know that graphite tends to be faster, fiberglass is slower, and bamboo is the slowest.

So what does all that mean?

Why do we care?

Why is rod action and rod material to a lesser degree?

Why is that prevalent when we're talking about fly rods?

What what is the point?

Well, all of those things, the action, the material, and then its intended use case, they all change the way the rod behaves on the water and then the best use case for that rod.

快调竿能抛出非常紧凑的线环。

Fast action rods will cast a very tight loop.

它们能让鱼线在空中快速移动。

They make the line move very quickly through the air.

高线速和紧凑的线环，当我们提到高线速时，意思就是鱼线运动得非常快。

High line speeds and tight loops, when we talk about generating a high line speed, that means your line's moving very quickly.

When we have a tight loop, so when you're casting your fly line in the air, you'll notice it makes a loop, and the loop opens up and extends completely straight on the front cast and on the back cast.

That's your loop.

And the faster your line's moving and the tighter that loop is, generally speaking, that means you are able to cast at longer distances with a higher degree of accuracy.

Now that's not always true.

That's why I said generally speaking, there are some slower rods that can generate loops that are relatively as tight as as graphite, just not having the same kind of line speed, and they can still have quite a bit of accuracy out to to great distance.

But generally speaking, your faster rods are gonna make those tight loops with high line speed, and that's a hallmark of being able to cast much further and then with a high degree of accuracy.

They really do aid in getting your fly line where you want it to be when the wind's blowing in your face.

Now the trade off with that, that all sounds pretty good.

Well, the trade off with that is that the tip section can be a little too stiff sometimes in fast action rods, so it's not going to have the same shock absorption for smaller tippet.

也就是说，如果你需要换细线，比如用六号子线搭配二十号干蝇来诱鱼咬钩，那根竿的竿稍可能因为太快太硬而派不上用场。

So that means if you need to size down and fish six x with a size twenty dry fly to get these fish to eat, that rod's tip might be so fast and stiff.

And we talked about stiff versus slow earlier or soft, stiff versus soft.

Softer rods, slower rods with softer tips, they absorb a lot of that energy, so it's not just your tippet and your leader absorbing it, it's also the rod absorbing it as well.

Some of the fast rods, their tips are a little too stiff to do that.

So your lighter tippet performance will suffer.

You're also gonna lose feel in faster rods.

And what that means is it's gonna be harder to feel when you need to move between casting strokes with a faster action rod because you don't get as much feedback.

The rod is stiff.

It's not as soft.

它通过软木手柄传递给你的感觉没那么多，就这样。

It's not giving you as much feedback through the cork handle saying, okay.

鱼竿现在没有受力。

The rod is unloaded.

The line is completely straightened out behind you on the back cast.

It is now time to move forward to the front cast.

So it can be easy with a faster rod to move your casting stroke a little too soon or a little too late.

Now fast rods forgive those timing mistakes a little bit more.

They really will just kind of whip the line out there for lack of a better phrase.

So even if your timing is not exactly perfect, the faster rods are a little bit more forgiving of that just by the nature of they recover so quickly to that straight position that even if you miss the timing a little bit, they'll still usually send your fly line out there.

But the problem is it's not gonna build the habits of feeling and responding to the rod in your hands, and that's not gonna build the good foundational mechanics of proper fly casting.

Now a slow action rod, like I mentioned earlier, it can generate some pretty decent line speeds, but the real calling card for a slow action rod is how well these types of rods transfer energy through your longer leaders and your lighter tippets.

So your slow action rods are great for fishing smaller dry flies at traditional trout fish fishing distances of, like, 20 to ish feet.

Those are your downsides of slow action rods.

Now medium action rod's right in between the two.

It makes loops that are tighter, generates pretty good line speed, but it's got enough feel that you will be able to feel a good and a bad cast.

It can handle heavier nymph rigs.

These medium fast rods aren't gonna they're not gonna cut the wind the way a fast rod does, and it's not gonna handle a dry fly with that same beautiful delicacy that you get out of a slow action rod.

But for the vast majority of trout fishing, these medium rods really hit the Goldilocks zone of giving you the best of both worlds.

You got enough lion speed that you can handle wind reasonably, but you've got enough feel and delicacy.

You can also handle those smaller flies.

So with all of that in mind, I think it's pretty easy to see why we recommend the medium rod, medium fast, medium action, whatever you wanna call it.

And most anglers in general, but especially beginners.

If you're not if you're not feeling and getting feedback from your rod, you are not able to understand the good and the bad of the fly cast, and then you're gonna have a hard time building those foundational habits.

And that's really going to mess with you later on.

And speaking from experience, I didn't pay I just didn't pay attention when I first started learning a fly cast.

And there was a good two or three year stretch where I had to unlearn everything I'd learned about fly casting and relearn it because my mechanics were just horrible and I could never it it was it was like a guessing game of, oh, is this cast gonna work?

I don't know.

I'm just trying my best.

所以别让自己陷在那种状态里太久。

And you don't wanna be in that situation for longer than you have to be.

That's a phase you go through as an angler as you learn and grow.

You don't necessarily wanna be stuck in that phase all the time.

But once I did and I was able to build those foundational casting mechanics, that's when I'm now able to say, alright.

It it allows me to diagnose what I did wrong and then fix it.

So you don't wanna miss out on that opportunity.
