The Fly Casting Mistakes That Make Wind Worse | Tip of the Week #19

Nothing makes a great day go immediately down the toilet the way that wind can. If the wind's at your back, it's not a HUGE problem — you probably get a bit more distance on your cast! But if the wind's blowing right in your face, you suddenly feel like the most incompetent fly caster to ever pick up a rod. Or at least, I usually do. And that's because I so often forget some of the key fundamentals for making good fly casts in the wind. So today on Untangled, we'll go through those important skills to keep in mind when the wind starts blowing. That way, you're not sitting on the bank, frustrated that you can't cast, when your buddy ties into a near 30-inch trout. Speaker 0

Nothing makes a great day go immediately down the toilet the way the wind can.

Speaker 0

If the wind's at your back, it's not a huge problem.

Speaker 0

You probably get a bit more distance on your cast.

Speaker 0

But if the wind's blowing right in your face, you probably start to feel like the most incompetent fly caster to ever pick up a rod, or at least I know that's how I usually feel.

Speaker 0

And that's because I really often forget some of the key fundamentals for making good fly casts in the wind.

Speaker 0

So today on Untangled, we'll go through those important skills to keep in mind when the wind starts blowing.

Speaker 0

That way, you're not sitting on the bank frustrated that you can't cast while your buddy is tying into trout that are pushing 30 inches.

Speaker 0

Not that I'm speaking from personal experience at all.

Speaker 0

This is untangled, fly fishing for everyone.

Speaker 0

由 Ventures Fly Co. 呈现。

It really means a ton to us that y'all appreciate the the content that we're doing and that it's actually helpful.

Speaker 0

It's nice to know that, you know, the time spent behind the mic is actually helping somebody else.

Speaker 0

I I really...

Speaker 0

It means a lot to hear that from you guys.

Speaker 0

We've had a lot of folks reaching out lately and just expressing their appreciation for VFC.

Speaker 0

So I just wanted to express my appreciation for you guys as well.

Speaker 0

You are the reason that this show exists and that we're able to do this and that I I get to call this work.

Speaker 0

It feels unfair that that's what it is.

Speaker 0

But just a big thank you, seriously, from the bottom of my heart to everybody.

Speaker 0

And I'm gonna start out this tip of the week with a little story for y'all.

Speaker 0

And as some of you may know, if you follow VFC over on school, which it's this free online group that we run.

Speaker 0

It's like Facebook, but it doesn't suck.

Speaker 0

It's just all fishing all the time.

Speaker 0

There's a link to join it in the show notes if you wanna go hang out again.

Speaker 0

It's completely free.

Speaker 0

But Alex and I just got back from a trip to Canada not too long ago, and we posted some pictures and some stories from the trip there in the school group.

Speaker 0

And specifically, we shared some stories about the lake trout and the pike that we caught on the fly rod, and that was the whole goal of doing that trip was to go chase those two fish on flies.

Speaker 0

但我……

But I...

Speaker 0

We fished, what, six days, I think?

Speaker 0

And three of the six days that we fished were really windy.

Speaker 0

Not just like, oh, this is a little breeze, like, I'm going to fall over.

Speaker 0

Me, who has a very low center of gravity, thanks to my love of wings and Mountain Dew and Diet Coke, is going to get blown over because the wind is going so so hard.

Speaker 0

It was that windy a couple of those days.

Speaker 0

And one day in particular just got awful.

Speaker 0

We were up at this one lake.

Speaker 0

We'd actually hiked into it.

Speaker 0

We'd started the day on this really big lake, and there were white caps on the lake, and our guide was like, alright.

Speaker 0

We're we're gonna hike up this river to another lake.

Speaker 0

We might be a little sheltered from the wind, and there's a really good chance that there's gonna be some big lake trout cruising the shore up there, and you guys can get get into them, but you'll have to be casting into the wind with the direction that the wind was blowing that day.

Speaker 0

And we said, yeah, we're we're game.

Speaker 0

We wanna go catch a big fish.

Speaker 0

We'll the wind.

Speaker 0

And, you know, we set off and didn't really think anything of it.

Speaker 0

But this was, I think, day five or six in a row of being out fishing eight, nine hours a day.

Speaker 0

And, you know, I used to do that a lot, and I don't know how I did because I was so tired by the end of this day.

Speaker 0

I was having a blast, but I was I was ready for, a half day or something.

Speaker 0

I needed a little siesta to just recharge.

Speaker 0

My my back was hurting real bad.

Speaker 0

You know, that's a, you know, joke about being overweight a little bit.

Speaker 0

然后……

And...

Speaker 0

But that...

Speaker 0

It really does.

Speaker 0

It It really drove home for me like, oh, dude, you gotta lose weight because my back was just killing me from standing ups and and casting and, you know, waiting.

Speaker 0

You're using your back muscles a ton.

Speaker 0

So I...

Speaker 0

My back's killing me.

Speaker 0

I'm tired, and then the wind really just had me flustered.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

And that's that's what I'm really wanna drive home here.

Speaker 0

And, you know, I'm sure feeling flustered in the wind happens to other folks too, but, you know, sometimes I'll be out on the water, I'll make a few really bad casts in a row, And then it's like, I either try to overcorrect my mistakes and I just...

Speaker 0

I I cast incorrectly, or I just...

Speaker 0

I can't pinpoint exactly what the problem is.

Speaker 0

I'm out there and my cast is falling apart, but I really can't I can't diagnose it.

Speaker 0

I can't fix it, and I can't get to...

Speaker 0

Get back to putting flies in front of fish and then making those flies look real.

Speaker 0

That that does happen.

Speaker 0

I wouldn't say on a fairly consistent basis, but especially, you know, if it's the end of a long day or the end of a long trip, start to get tired, and I really do kinda...

Speaker 0

You know, the fundamentals start to fall apart for me a little bit sometimes, and that's exactly what happened this day on the lake.

Speaker 0

And to be completely honest, right, so the the wind was all...

Speaker 0

It was right on the edge of almost too windy to fish in.

Speaker 0

Some of the gusts were cracking 40 miles an hour, and eventually, there is a point where it's just too windy to fly fish.

Speaker 0

我……

I...

Speaker 0

Some folks will say that there's not.

Speaker 0

Some folks are adamant about that, but I think, really, there is a point you get to where it is just too windy.

Speaker 0

It's just not feasible anymore.

Speaker 0

We were right on the edge of it not being feasible anymore.

Speaker 0

And I am throwing, as this wind's blowing in my face, I'm throwing some of the worst casts of the whole trip.

Speaker 0

I'm snagging on the bushes behind me.

Speaker 0

I'm slapping the water.

Speaker 0

My cast is falling apart.

Speaker 0

I've got tailing loops everywhere.

Speaker 0

Just nothing's going wrong, but I couldn't figure out what part of my cast was breaking down.

Speaker 0

And it was really frustrating because I felt like I was doing everything I'd been doing the rest of the trip, and I'd handled the wind okay to that point.

Speaker 0

But I just couldn't pinpoint what the issue was.

Speaker 0

So I get really frustrated, and I stomped back to the shore.

Speaker 0

I sit down.

Speaker 0

I just try to clear my head for a sec so that I can approach it with a, you know, fresh mind and think, okay, what am I doing wrong?

Speaker 0

Where where is my cast falling apart?

Speaker 0

Let's fix it and and move on and catch some fish.

Speaker 0

And while I'm sitting down trying to gather myself, I see Alex on the opposite shore of the lake across the river from me, and he's tossing these gorgeous cats right in the wind.

Speaker 0

He looks like he should be an Instagram model.

Speaker 0

He's doing such a great job of it.

Speaker 0

And then he hooks into this lake trout that was almost 30 inches long and gorgeous and colored up and beautiful.

Speaker 0

And I got really jealous and frustrated because I'm like, that should have been me.

Speaker 0

I should have been catching that fish.

Speaker 0

And to be completely honest, you know, I got up, I started trying to cast again, and I really couldn't dial it in.

Speaker 0

And I I could not figure out what my issue with casting was until later.

Speaker 0

We were back at the lodge that night.

Speaker 0

I was able to think things through without the distraction of some big fish that I just couldn't reach.

Speaker 0

I I could approach it with a clear head.

Speaker 0

And what I really realized, was making these three mistakes.

Speaker 0

These are the three tips I'm gonna share with you about how to cast into the wind, and then I am gonna end with one recommendation that I think all of us should take to heart if we really want to level up as fly casters.

Speaker 0

So the first tip, and this was my big issue that day, but tip number one is don't force the rod.

Speaker 0

If you watch casting videos of great casters on YouTube, one thing that they've all got in common, because everybody's got a different take on when should you break your wrist, and how much of your forearm should you use and how much of your shoulder and how much of your body should move.

Speaker 0

Everybody's got a slightly different casting cadence.

Speaker 0

Everybody's gonna come at it just a little bit differently than everybody else.

Speaker 0

Just the nature of of fly fishing.

Speaker 0

There's no one perfect way to do it all.

Speaker 0

But the one thing that all the great casters have in common is they don't look like they're working too hard to make the cast happen.

Speaker 0

Their cast looks effortless.

Speaker 0

And that's not because they're Superman or anything like that.

Speaker 0

It's not because they had all, you know, big plate of wings and Diet Coke before, and they're just jazzed up and ready to go.

Speaker 0

They just understand the physics and the mechanics of fly casting.

Speaker 0

And then when they have an issue with the cast, when they mess the timing up or whatever, they're not getting flustered about it.

Speaker 0

They're not letting it eat at them.

Speaker 0

Or if they do, at least they're not filming it.

Speaker 0

It's it's not on video.

Speaker 0

So you see, you get that sort of assumption that, oh, well, they never make mistakes.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

They they do.

Speaker 0

But I I think a lot of these great casters, especially the ones that I've fished with personally, I've watched them make mistakes, but they don't let it fluster them to the point that I let it fluster me sometimes.

Speaker 0

So the thing to remember is that fly rods are designed to cast heavy lines and relatively heavy flies, especially when you start fishing rods like seven, eight, nine, ten weights.

Speaker 0

That's what they're built to do.

Speaker 0

So all that weight that's in the line and in the fly is going to load the rod, and it's gonna help create those tight loops that are gonna cut through the wind.

Speaker 0

And by far, the biggest issue that I had on that really windy day in Canada was that I kept trying to force the rod.

Speaker 0

I was I was casting it like I was trying to throw a 90 mile an hour fastball.

Speaker 0

And when you do that, you end up creating these really big wide open loops that catch the wind and they collapse quickly.

Speaker 0

And then all that line's gonna blow right back in your face when that happens.

Speaker 0

So fly casting, even when you're tossing big seven or eight inch long streamers on eight weights or 10 weights, and that was the majority of the fishing that we did up in Canada, you shouldn't...

Speaker 0

It shouldn't be something that wears you out.

Speaker 0

It shouldn't be something that you get back to the lodge, you gotta ice your shoulder afterwards.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

It should be a simple, relatively smooth, relatively easy motion to pull off.

Speaker 0

So if you find that you are just really flinging that rod back and forth and you're just absolutely wailing on it, like you're trying to win one of those contests, few of...

Speaker 0

How few hits with a hammer can you take to drive this nail into the stump.

Speaker 0

That's a sign that you need to stop.

Speaker 0

You need to go back to the basics of fly casting.

Speaker 0

And the basics of fly casting would be this.

Speaker 0

Your rod tip should move from about 45 degrees in front of you to about 45 degrees behind you, and that tip should travel in a relatively straight line.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

That doesn't mean your rod has to be straight up or down or parallel to your head or anything like that.

Speaker 0

Because when it's windy, holding the rod out to the side and doing kind of a sidearm casting motion can actually help cut through the wind a little bit better than holding the rod straight up and casting directly overhead sometimes.

Speaker 0

But the rod tip, even at, you know, whatever angle you hold that rod at, that rod tip is still making that straight line between two points 45 degrees in front of you and behind you.

Speaker 0

And the rod is gonna do all that work of moving the line.

Speaker 0

You just need to do the work of moving the rod.

Speaker 0

Now you gotta get your timing right, but you just need to do the work of moving the rod.

Speaker 0

And then a double haul, that is going to be key to getting your cast to work in the wind.

Speaker 0

So you've gotta time your haul so that it's gonna add that line speed and help tighten loops up so that they cut through the wind better.

Speaker 0

And for those who don't know, a double hull is just a casting technique that we use with bigger flies and bigger setups where on the forward cast and on the back cast, you pull a little bit right on the cast.

Speaker 0

And what that does is that pull down with your free hand that has the line in it, that generates more line speed, tightens your loops up, and, again, cuts through the wind.

Speaker 0

It's really simple to get the hang of, and there's a lot of great videos on YouTube about how to do a double haul.

Speaker 0

You can go look at those.

Speaker 0

A little bit of practice and you'll get the hang of it pretty quick.

Speaker 0

Because once you once you do one or two double hauls, the timing's really easy to continue because it just feels...

Speaker 0

You'll feel it in the rod instantly.

Speaker 0

It's a really simple tactic to pick up because there's immediate feedback on whether you did it right or wrong.

Speaker 0

So that's what a double haul is.

Speaker 0

So those are the casting mechanics, and that's tip number one.

Speaker 0

Don't force the rod.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

If you are really just wailing on it, that's a sign that you're gonna be having some some casting issues.

Speaker 0

Tip number two, don't drop the rod...

Speaker 0

The tip of your fly rod.

Speaker 0

And this dovetails with what we're talking about with good casting mechanics because a lot of us will be out there, and I'm sure you've had this issue.

Speaker 0

I know I have this all the time, where you'll throw some really good false casts.

Speaker 0

And then on your last cast where you're ready to to push that or to shoot your line and get it out there, you you tend to push that rod really hard.

Speaker 0

You're like, oh, I'm gonna put a little extra juice on this last cast.

Speaker 0

And when you do that, sometimes what you'll see happen is that you're gonna drive the point of that rod way past that 45 degree angle in front of you.

Speaker 0

And what that does is it collapses the loop, opens that loop all the way up, and then lets the wind catch it and throw that fly line everywhere.

Speaker 0

And by far, this was my biggest issue on that really windy day that I was having because I would...

Speaker 0

I'd throw a couple of decent false casts, and then the last one, I'd like, oh, I gotta get this all the way out there and have to push that rod tip down hard, almost be hitting the water with it.

Speaker 0

And it would collapse my loops immediately.

Speaker 0

All that fly line would just drop in a giant pile, and then I'd have to strip it all in, start all over.

Speaker 0

And it was just extremely frustrating, but that's because I was dropping that tip on the final cast way too much.

Speaker 0

So your final casting stroke needs to stop just like your false cast.

Speaker 0

You only wanna drop your rod tip after the fly line is rolled out, landed on the water.

Speaker 0

Then drop your rod tip and start manipulating or stripping the line in however you need to.

Speaker 0

But don't drop that rod tip on that last cast.

Speaker 0

Again, that was my biggest issue.

Speaker 0

Once I had time to sit and think about it, I realized, yeah, that's what I was doing.

Speaker 0

That's where it was all falling apart.

Speaker 0

And then tip number three is keep your thumb on top of the grip of the fly rod.

Speaker 0

And I'll be completely honest.

Speaker 0

我……

I...

Speaker 0

For a long time, I never thought that how you held the fly rod mattered, and we would get questions every now and then from folks, you know, wanting to know, oh, what's the proper way to hold the fly rod?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, well, you just hold it.

Speaker 0

就是……

It's just...

Speaker 0

You you just grab it.

Speaker 0

And there might be some validity to that where, yeah, you just hold it, but as I have progressed and grown as an angler, I have started to come into situations where I realized, yeah, my casting...

Speaker 0

And I'm I'm like an average caster at best.

Speaker 0

I understand the mechanics of it.

Speaker 0

I I understand how to explain it, but I don't always put it all together very well out on the water, which is which is frustrating.

Speaker 0

But, you know, it's one of the many things we love about fly fishing.

Speaker 0

There's always something to improve on, always something you can do better.

Speaker 0

And for me, top of the list is casting.

Speaker 0

That's what I really wanna improve the most.

Speaker 0

But as I've tried to improve my castings a lot over the last few years, I've noticed how much the grip really does matter.

Speaker 0

Some really fine dry fly work, found it can help if I put my pointer finger on top of the rod to really direct where I want that to go.

Speaker 0

But for bigger streamers and especially in the wind when you're trying to deal with that, keeping your thumb up on top of the grip, that actually helped me a ton.

Speaker 0

Because as you move between your casting strokes, your thumb should be pointing straight up the blank.

Speaker 0

And if your thumb's pointing straight up the blank, then that means your fly rod should stay pretty straight.

Speaker 0

And if your fly rod's staying pretty straight, then your line should stay pretty straight too.

Speaker 0

And if your thumb starts to twist off to one side or the other on the grip, that could be an indication that your rod isn't really moving in a straight line.

Speaker 0

So your fly line's not moving in a straight line, so then your cast could potentially be falling apart as a result of that.

Speaker 0

And then keeping the thumb on top of the cork is also...

Speaker 0

Especially, again, when it's windy, it's a good reminder for me about how we really need abrupt stops on each end of the casting stroke, especially in the wind.

Speaker 0

That rod really needs to stop pretty firmly when it's really windy because you need a a good solid energy transfer.

Speaker 0

And this abrupt stop is...

Speaker 0

It's really doing the equivalent of what we think pushing and casting hard does when I talk about tip number two.

Speaker 0

Because that abrupt stop, it adds a bit of power, a bit of speed to your line.

Speaker 0

Keeping your thumb on top, it's a really good reminder for me that your final forward cast should feel more like you're you're punching or fist bumping someone.

Speaker 0

I I don't really know why it works for me other than just, oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

When my thumb's on top, I remember that final cast should be, boom.

Speaker 0

Nice, abrupt stop.

Speaker 0

It's a really good reminder for me there.

Speaker 0

So those are your big three tips.

Speaker 0

K?

Speaker 0

Keep your thumb on top of the rod.

Speaker 0

Don't drop the tip, and don't force the rod.

Speaker 0

And this will apply to other casting situations, but especially in the wind, these are those little fundamentals that you gotta stay on top of or things will start to kinda collapse in on themselves.

Speaker 0

And then before we get to my final recommendation, the last little tip to leave y'all with, I do just wanna reiterate that the best way to accomplish good casts when it's windy is with tight loops and line that's moving quickly.

Speaker 0

So again, you really need to understand the double haul, learn how to pull that off because it will be your best friend in those windy conditions.

Speaker 0

It is an indispensable tool when the wind is really blowing, so don't forget that.

Speaker 0

Then the last recommendation, you know, I've mentioned a few minutes ago how at best I'm an average caster, and that's definitely not ever gonna shy away from that.

Speaker 0

But one thing that this trip in Canada taught me, and one thing that I am going to commit to do more of as as we go on from from here is that I need to actually go practice my casting at a park.

Speaker 0

I really need to spend the time doing that because the worst time for me to try and dial in my casting is when I'm on the water and there's big fish in front of me, and I've traveled all this way to get there, and I've got a limited window to do it, and there's all this pressure, and I start to overthink things.

Speaker 0

就是……

It it just...

Speaker 0

All that pressure makes me fold like a a politician who just got offered a bribe.

Speaker 0

All the values and morals go out the window.

Speaker 0

Y'all do whatever you want, mister big company for ten thousand dollars.

Speaker 0

It really gets to me sometimes.

Speaker 0

所以……

And so...

Speaker 0

And it did to me that day with Alex when the wind was blowing in our face.

Speaker 0

So if you're struggling with casting big flies, casting in the wind, or just casting in general, go to a park and practice where there is no pressure.

Speaker 0

There's no fish to catch.

Speaker 0

So all you're doing is working on the casting.

Speaker 0

There's nothing else to distract you.

Speaker 0

It's it's a really good place to do it.

Speaker 0

And I remember I taught my best friend Lander how to fly fish.

Speaker 0

I've talked with...

Speaker 0

I've talked about Lander a lot on the show.

Speaker 0

Known him since I was five years old.

Speaker 0

And the first time I taught him to Fly Cast, we went to a park by his house and spent forty five minutes to an hour in the park working on casting, and he picked it up really quick with no pressure.

Speaker 0

And then we got to the river and he saw the fish rising, and he started to have some issues because of the pressure.

Speaker 0

So I...

Speaker 0

I've seen this work and seen this actually bear fruit.

Speaker 0

So, you know, and if you can, set your phone up to record your casts so you can watch and see, oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm bringing the rod tip way too low on that cast, or My rod's not moving enough or the timing's off.

Speaker 0

You can really diagnose your casting.

Speaker 0

You don't need someone else there to do it.

Speaker 0

You you can just record yourself and see where things are falling apart.

Speaker 0

I really think this is the best way to improve your casting without the pressure of performing while the fish are hanging out right there.

Speaker 0

And then as far as, you know, how should you go about practicing your casting, I don't put a fly on.

Speaker 0

Some people will put yarn on the end of their leader so they can really see where things are landing.

Speaker 0

It's a great idea.

Speaker 0

You just tie a little piece of yarn to the end of your leader.

Speaker 0

And then to set up some targets, little pie plates, dinner plates, hoops, whatever you want your target to be.

Speaker 0

It doesn't matter.

Speaker 0

Just pick something.

Speaker 0

You'll measure them out at different distances and try your best to land your flies where they need to be.

Speaker 0

So I hope that's helpful.

Speaker 0

I hope this is something y'all can take and and apply and really start to improve on because I know, like I said, casting is my weak point.

Speaker 0

That's where I really need to get the best, and I'm certainly been working on all of this stuff that I just shared with y'all today.
