What's keeping you from having consistent repeatable success out on the water?
From fishing with that same sort of confidence you see guides approach it with or anglers who've been fishing for decades.
Is it really just time and honing a bunch of technical skills like casting or fly selection?
Well, that stuff helps, but the best anglers I know, the ones I say I wanna be like when I grow up aren't necessarily the best casters and none of them can tell you the Latin name of every single bug on the water.
What they all have in common is really simple.
They're incredible at watching the water and using what they see to inform how they tackle any given situation.
More than anything, this is the skill that separates the good from the great anglers.
So today on Untangled, I'll walk you through why this is so important and how mastering the art of watching and waiting will make you a noticeably more successful angler.

But I am gonna set the stage for this show today with a little story.
About a month ago, I was out fishing with Alex and then my good friend Ryan McCullough.
I've mentioned him on this on the show quite a bit.
And Alex and Ryan, they finally got to meet each other.
We finally all got to fish together.
It was a fantastic time.
Had an absolute blast with them.
And the first day that we were out fishing, we set up we've had this nice long run that had enough room for the three of us, and it stretched kinda between these two pools.
So we take our rods down to the bank, but none of us rigged up yet.
We just found where we wanted to fish, got down to the river, and we were expecting to see maybe some blue winged olives, maybe some caddis, maybe PMDs.
With the weather this winter, it's been kinda weird with the hatches, but we were expecting some sort of mayfly and then maybe a caddis hatch coming off as well.
But the weather is just a little bit too warm for the blue winged olives to pop, and it was just really too bright and sunny for a really thick mayfly hatch when we were out on the water.
There were a few midges buzzing too when we we got down there, but nothing in really huge numbers.
And then the other thing we noticed was that there weren't any fish rising, which was kinda weird because this river is known for fish that rise, like, twenty four seven.
It feels like.
And then the water was just slightly off color.
So we had all this information, all this this stuff we were looking at that told me, you know, different ways that I could tackle the river.
And this is a river where midges are always a a really big part of the fish's diet more so than in other rivers.
Midges are always important, but some places they are that's that's it.
That's just what the fish love is midges, and this is one of those rivers.
So after watching the water for like ten minutes and seeing more of what I've already described, I just decided I was gonna set up a dry dropper rig with a midge nymph on the bottom and then put a small mayfly on top because I thought there should still be some mayflies out and about even if there's not a lot.
And then it had been a little stormy earlier in the week, so I would I was making an assumption.
We weren't there so I don't know.
I I couldn't tell for sure, but I was making an assumption that, yeah, there's probably been a few mayflies out about the fish will recognize it.
So that's why I put that on.
And then Alex, he actually put up a similar rig, and then he went a little little ways downstream to start working the water.
And Ryan didn't rig anything up at all.
He is a dry fly purist through and through.
And so he just kept watching the water and waiting for something to happen, waiting to see some consistent rises.
We did see a few splashy rises close to the bank, then one out behind a boulder in the middle of the river, but there's no consistency to them.
There wasn't a lot of bugs on top of the water, so we weren't a 100% sure what they ate.
It just wasn't the kind of situation where you think, oh, I'm gonna bust out my dry flies.
So he's sitting there waiting for something to happen.
Alex and I fish hard for about an hour, and we really didn't have much to show for it at that point.
And again, Ryan didn't fish because he didn't see any risers, so we all go back to the same part of the bank where we set up shop To begin, we grab some snacks and we just kept watching the water.
Just kept looking around, trying to see what was going on because we we tried a few things so far.
They hadn't panned out and it it was kinda back to the drawing board for us at that point.
So after our snacks, I grabbed another nice ice cold Diet Coke, and Ryan and I decided we're gonna walk upstream.
The road's right above the river right there.
So we wanted to walk upstream, see if we could spot any rising fish, any bugs, any sign that there were actually fish in the river because we were at the point where we were starting to doubt their existence.
And Alex said, you know, I'll stay in this spot.
I'll keep fishing it.
It's good water.
There's gotta be something here.
So we left, and Ryan and I have been gone, like, five minutes.
And we we hear Alex yell.
And it was the yell of, guys, this is a fish.
I need like, I I'm gonna need a hand with it.
So we turn around, and we're up on the road above the river.
So we got a good view, and he was tight to something, and then it jumped, and it was huge.
Even from that far away, I was like, oh my gosh.
That's a big fish.
So we hightail it back.
I grab the net.
I help him get it wrangled in.
Turns out to be this, like, 21 inch rainbow, just thick, fat, just sloppy big fish.
And Alex had caught it on a royal flush, which is a larger terrestrial style fly because he'd seen some bugs on the water finally, and he knew they were stoneflies.
And once he saw that, he's like, oh, royal flush.
Boom.
This looks it's the same size.
It's the same shape.
It's gonna work perfect.
He matched it.
啪!
Boom.
Caught the fish that way.
And, you know, you might not know what a stonefly is, and you might not know some of the other flies that we've talked about so far today.
So if that's the case, we've actually got this field guide.
It's completely free.
It's got everything you need to know about all these different bug species in them, when they're coming off, flies that we recommend for them, a bunch of other stuff, a bunch of other information that's good to have.
It's a completely waterproof.
It's actual physical field guide.
It's spiral bound, so it's sized to fit just right there in your fishing pack.
We've got all this information in there, and it's completely free.
We just have you pay the shipping to get it to you.
We just want you to have all this information so that when when you're in a situation like this, you see a bug, you don't know what it is, boom, pull out the field guide, you can figure it out real quick.
你可以去 vfc.media/fieldguide 获取这份手册。
So you can go get that at vfc.media/fieldguide.
再次提醒,网址是 vfc.media/fieldguide,节目简介里也有链接。
Again, that's a vfc.media/fieldguide, or there's a link down in the show notes as well.
But that that's a very helpful way to to figure out what these flies are if you're not super familiar with them.
So Alex catches that big rainbow.
We start looking high and low for more stoneflies because he'd seen a couple.
And what do you know?
There were a few out finally because it had warmed up enough that the stoneflies were out.
They're doing their thing.
They're having a good time.
And that is when we actually finally saw what Ryan especially had been waiting for, which was consistently rising fish.
Maybe 30 feet up the bank from us, tucked right when I say right next to the bank, they're within like inches of the bank.
In the shadows, there were two fish rising just munching as these stoneflies were trying to crawl the bank, dry their wings, and fly away.
And I looked at Ryan, and Ryan looked at me, and he's like, no, you fish first.
So I was like, I'm not gonna argue with you on that.
So I threw a cast up there.
It was kind of a weird drift.
I had to get a different angle on it.
So I think the third or fourth cast that I threw through there, I I hooked a fish.
Pretty decent brown, nothing crazy, but a a really solid fish and it came up and it just confidently sipped that stonefly.
It was just so much fun to watch him just chomp on it.
But I caught it, let it go, we got a picture of it, and then it was Ryan's turn.
And he didn't just start fishing immediately like I did, because he sat, he watched, he waited for a minute for another rise, wanted to see where to cast.
And as he's looking upstream where I caught mine and where the two had been rising, this fish rises literally five feet from him just to his left.
So he reels in a little bit of line, and he throws a cast, like, 10 feet in front of him and just high sticks this drift right into where this fish rose.
And then the fish rises and eats it five feet from him, and he puts this 18 inch brown in the net.
One of the most ridiculous cast I have honestly ever seen.
It it was just it was ridiculous.
So I tell these stories because you show up to the river, and if you're not paying attention, you're you're not paying attention to the water, and you're not letting the water dictate what you do, you're not letting it guide all of your choices, and you try to force things to happen based on what you wanna fish, chances are you're gonna get skunked.
K?
Because if if we'd shown up and we'd insisted on fishing mayflies on this river, even though they weren't hatching, and we just pounded the water relentlessly with mayflies until, you know, the fish either ate it or didn't, there's a really good chance we would have been skunked that day because we would have been so laser focused on the mayflies that I don't know that we would have even noticed the stoneflies that started hatching later.
K?
So instead of taking that approach where you go and you think, oh, I know what's gonna happen, and you you try and make things happen the way you want, instead we showed up, we didn't see very much going on at all, and we went with our gut instincts.
And you'll you'll develop that the more and more you fish.
You'll get a lot better at instincts as you've got more experiences to draw on.
But when that first plan didn't pan out, even though we thought it was good, we felt confident about it, then we just went back to what we know works, which is watching, waiting, and then reacting to what the river is gonna do.
And so often, I'll tell you, I hear from beginners all the time about how they're they're having a tough time on the water, and the conversation usually goes, you know, I went out, I tried everything in my box, and the fish didn't like any of it.
And my first reaction to that is, hey, I've been there.
I have been there, and I understand it, and it is not fun, and I am sorry because it sucks.
But the the next reaction is, well, why did you try everything?
Was there any sort of method to why you used the flies in the presentations that you did?
And I'm not saying that you have to be overtly analytical about every single situation, but it's a fisher rising to eat mayflies and you throw a streamer instead, then you get upset about the fish not eating the streamer, that that one's on you that's not on the fish.
对。
Yeah.
The fish are almost always telling you something about what they're eating, where they're hiding, what kind of presentation they want.
And if you just go to the river, try your usual setup, it doesn't work, and then default to just cycling through your box after that and try and throw the whole box at the river, then, yeah, you really are gonna struggle.
You are going to have you you are gonna have those days where you throw the whole box at them and nothing sticks.
There has to be some sort of reason, some sort of method to why you're doing what you're doing if you want those things to end up working consistently for you and in a repeatable way.
And I mentioned that right at the very beginning of the show that you want that consistent repeatable success.
There's gotta be a reason for what you're doing.
Let let me give you some examples to clarify this for you.
Let's say you get to the river.
It's early morning.
It's summer, and you know that because it's summer, the caddis are going.
PMDs也在飞。
PMDs are going as well.
Maybe even some drakes.
Those are two mayfly species.
But when you get to the water, you don't see a single caddisapp.
You don't see any mayflies.
All you see are a few midges buzzing, and there's no fish rising.
K.
With the absence of fish rising, no bugs other than midges being terribly active.
What I draw from that based on my experiences is that the fish are hanging out down deeper, and they're waiting for the next bitch big hatch.
Pardon me.
They're waiting for the next big hatch so they can move into those feeding lanes and the riffles and runs in the shallower water.
Now because it's summer, there is a pretty decent chance that a fish or two are gonna react to a caddis drifting in front of them or a PMD or drake because they're used to seeing those flies.
They're hungry.
They they really might just see it drift up on the surface, come up, and eat it anyways at that point.
So I will go ahead and use one of those as the top fly in a dry dropper rig, but I'm much more focused on getting my nymph down deep to where I suspect the fish are actually hanging out before the hatch really starts.
K?
So I'll go through with that dry dropper rig, and if I fish that well, if I fish that dry dropper rig effectively and I don't catch anything, then that tells me I'm either wrong about where the fish are hanging out or I'm wrong about what fly they wanted to eat that day.
Now 90% of the time, I'm wrong about where the fish are.
I am so bad at walking up the river and spooking fish out of places where I didn't think they would be because it's like, oh, well, they're not gonna be there today.
They've they've all been in this kind of water, and then they're in a different kind of water.
对。
Yes.
You wanna look for patterns like that that that's gonna be beneficial for you.
Because if you notice that you're catching a lot of fish in the seams that are, like, two feet deep, you wanna fish every single one of those.
But if you get to a seam that's only a foot and a half deep or so and you think, oh, there's no fish in there, and then you spook a giant out of there, you're gonna feel like I do when you're stomping up the river like Bigfoot coming home late.
That's how I feel sometimes, man.
Like, I'm so overstuffed with wings and Diet Coke, I can't balance, and I'm just stomping up the river, and I'm not taking time to, you know, try and be thorough with where I where I'm fishing.
So that's why I say, you know, like 90% of the time, I'm wrong about where the fish are.
So they're either usually deeper than where I've been getting my nymphs or they're holding in shallower water, and they're already eating the nymphs of the adults.
Even though we don't see those adult caddis and PMDs and drakes out yet, they're eating the nymphs that are starting to emerge.
K?
So in that situation, my next move would be to target slightly different types of water until I find out where the fish are.
And I'm in all of this, what I'm doing is I'm taking what the river and the fish are telling me, and then I'm adapting my approach to match it.
I'm not trying to force what I wanna do onto them.
I'm letting them tell me what to do.
Now what I would have done fifteen years ago, it's a brand longer than fifteen years ago.
I I can't do math.
What I would have done as a brand new angler when I started out is would have pulled up to a run on that summer same summer morning.
I would have fished an Elkhart Cattus over the same piece of water for hours, insisting that the fish are gonna eat it eventually, and I would try and try and try to get the fish to bend to my will instead of going the other way around saying, okay, this is the game the fish wanna play today?
Alright.
I'm a meet you and I'm gonna beat you at your own game, you stinking dadgum trout.
And that all happened because I never stopped to actually watch, wait, and see what was going on.
Another hypothetical.

Let's say you get to the river in the afternoon.
The caddis are going nuts and the fish are rising, but they're not rising very consistently.
Instead of just tying on that elk or caddis because there's caddis going and there's fish rising, instead of tying that elk or caddis on, you should stop and watch for a minute because what are the fish actually rising on?
Are they eating the adult caddis as they're skittering away from the water and and leaving the river to go mate?
Are the caddis buzzing high above the water, going down to touch it real quick, and then flying back up like they're laying eggs?
好。
K.
And are the fish grabbing them as they briefly touch the water?
Or more importantly, are there any bugs hatching that maybe you didn't see because you're focused on the caddis and is that what the trout are actually eating off the top of the surface?
Again, young, first time I started doing this Spencer, I would just see caddis in the air.
I'd see fish rising and assume it's a caddis hatch and the fish are hungry.
And very often that's true.
Very often it's gonna serve you well.
There's a reason we tell you to see what's going on in, on, and around the water.
But sometimes, this happened to me quite recently.
I get out on the water in this huge hatch.
The fish weren't really interested in the caddis adults at all.
All the rises I saw were sporadic.
They were splashy, kinda like the fish were trying to smack emergers or egg laying caddis coming back to the water.
There weren't consistent rhythmic rises.
Nothing that told me, okay, cast here to these fish.
What it tells me when I see stuff like that is the fish are likely eating the emerging caddis pupa where they're not in the surface film yet, but they're on their way up to it.
So a fly like a weightless pheasant tail or a half baked caddis, it's a fantastic little pattern to fish right off of Elk Ear caddis or any other adult caddis fly, and then get into that top third of the water column where the fish are probably hanging out where they're actually looking.
And once I learned to make these kinds of connections, once I learned how to make these observations and actually think about why I was rigging up the way that I do, where my flies were going to go, and how that fit into what I already saw the fish doing or not doing, that's really when I went from feeling like I just got lucky a lot out on the water to feeling like I actually had some confidence and maybe knew a little bit about what we were doing out there.
And I I talk about this all the time at VFC, all of us do, and that is understanding the why behind things.
It is not enough if you wanna be successful as a fly angler.
It is not enough to just understand the mechanics and and the the actual motions that you need to do to catch fish.
You have to understand why you're doing things that way.
And when you step back from the river, when you watch and you wait and you're willing to take a minute and not fish, and you observe, you learn so much about what's going on.
I can't tell you how much Alex and I have learned in the last three or four years since we've started making all these videos and filming and being out on the water, just by being the one behind the camera and looking at these fish through the camera lens and not fishing, just following it all with the lens, We've learned so much.
It's blown our minds some of the things that we've observed about how the the bugs actually move and sit on the water, how the fish actually react to them, especially the refusals that we get.
You know, we'll see some close-up shots of fish refusing flies for reasons we can't figure out.
K?
Because it looks like a perfect drift on the camera, but there still was something about that the fish didn't like.
All of that, again, kind of unique situation where we're filming things, but still just that very basic motion of just stopping, watching, and waiting has taught us so much over the years, and I guarantee it's gonna teach you a lot about how the fish are acting because when you take the time to observe it, you're you're going to see some of that why.
You're gonna understand a little bit more of why you're doing this.

So if you really wanna make some big strides as an angler this year, you really wanna improve, you really wanna improve your catch rate on the water, then the most important skill you can develop is learning to watch, to wait, and then to do what the water and the fish are telling you to do.
And that is gonna help you out a ton.
I guarantee it.

I'd love to continue the conversation about this, but this really is the most valuable fly fishing skill that I think anglers can and should develop.
So hopefully that helped out.

But until next time folks, it is time to wrap this up and get on with our day.
So I will see and talk to y'all later, but until then, get out on the water, enjoy yourselves, and live real life.
