You get into summer and everyone gets excited to throw big bugs like a chubby Chernobyl or a royal flush.
And those certainly get the job done sometimes.
There's a couple of flies that most anglers, myself included, just overlook.
These bugs are on the menu for trout all through summer, but they rarely make it onto a hatch chart.
So today on Untangled, I'll share with you what those flies are, why you should think about using them, and why I think they get overlooked so much year after year.
This is untangled, fly fishing for everyone.
Everybody.
Welcome to it.
This is Untangled, and I am your host, Spencer Durant, back here at the VFC Institute for Advanced Angling Studies where we don't give degrees because the learning never stops.
And speaking of learning, I have opened a lot of the shows lately with my failures and my mistakes.
I've been learning quite a lot from those lately, thankfully.
And today's show is gonna be no different because it's time to talk about something that up until the last, oh, I'd say year, year and a half or so, I spent my entire fishing career until, like I said, the last year, year and a half, criminally underutilizing two bugs that are on the menu.
They're a big part of a trout's diet, especially in the summer, and that would be your ants and your beetles.
And I'm talking ant like the the little critter that ruined your picnics, not your aunt Karen.
I refuse to pronounce it aunt.
K?
I I didn't grow up with an estate in the vineyards and going down to play a spot of tennis with a Gerard down by the beach and no.
It's ant.
I'm gonna die on that hill.
Anyways, it feels kind of funny to admit that, yeah, up until recently, I didn't spend a lot of time with ants and beetles.
But I know I'm not the only one who never went that or who never really gave them a lot of thought.
And I'm I'm glad that I was able to, you know, learn about them and really start using them and and put that knowledge to the test the last little bit and then be able to come and share what I've learned with y'all.
But that's what we're gonna learn about today is when and where you're gonna find ants and beetles, why trout eat them, why they're part of the menu, how to fish them, and then, of course, we will end with the patterns that we recommend you use here from all of us at VFC.
So let's start out.
As I was doing a little bit of research and just getting some notes together for the show this week, I was reading some old stories about fly fishing with ants and beetles, and I came across one that Ernest Schwiebert wrote.
If you don't know who Ernest Schwiebert is, he is one of the pioneering fly fishing writers of the twentieth century who brought a lot of knowledge about aquatic insects into the mainstream.
Excuse me.
It wasn't always easy to read or easy to understand.
Some of his books are very dense, but he brought a lot of that knowledge out of the forefront.
He did a lot for it.
And in '19 when's the date on this?
1978, he wrote this little story all about ants.
So one thing that he wrote really stuck out to me, wanted to share it with you.
He said, quote, few anglers realize that ants are a major factor in the trout diet since most fly fishermen are more conscious of mayflies and other aquatic insects.
All fishermen have seen trout taking ants during the hot afternoons of spring and summer, most without realizing what the fish were doing as they sipped and bulged softly in the surface film.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I can attest to that.
That is true over the last little bit as I have learned more about ants and beetles.
That is a very true statement from Ernest.
And I'll go ahead and link his entire piece down in the show notes if you wanna read it.
But the big takeaway, I think, to take from that and then my experiences last little bit, and then, of course, the experiences of all the anglers who regularly fish ants and beetles is that they are a a much larger part of a fish's diet than most of us recognize.
Ants, especially beetles, they're not they're not going to be as abundant in in huge numbers as ants are, but they really do get a ton of attention from the fish when they land on the water because, you they're big, they they make this big juicy looking meal the same way that a hopper gets a lot of attention from fish.
Beetles are gonna get that too.
And another bit of information from another wonderful fly fishing writer and this time fly tire, Renee Harrop.
He's really famous.
He's from Idaho, really famous for his patterns that he developed out there on the Henry's Fork.
And he told a story once in another article about this old guy.
His name was Gash, which is a great old guy name.
And he he this Gash guy would always fish the railroad section of the Henry's Fork, is renowned for being one of the toughest pieces of trout water to fish anywhere on the planet.
And all that Gash would ever use when he would go fishing was this old deer hair beetle pattern.
And Renee Harrop wrote in his story, he said that this old guy, quote, thought that given a choice, trout would always select a beetle over anything else that might be available.
Though this theory has never been completely proven to my satisfaction, there is definitely something special in the way trout respond to beetles.
And like others who knew him, I credit Gash for creating greater awareness of this behavior.
I carry and fish more beetles since I met him along the river.
So getting hearing that from Renee Harrop and then the reminder from Ernest Schwiebert that, hey, these are important, but we know not everybody uses them.
Again, makes me feel a little bit better about the fact that I ignored them for so long in my fly fishing career.
But that really gives you that high level overview of the role that ants and beetles play in a fish's diet.
They do get eaten.
They do get taken quite frequently more than we realize, and I'll get to that in a minute.
But they're they're also not something that just be used out west or in the high mountain streams either.
And I I really think what what Schwiebert said about it all was true.
He said that, you know, we're just not aware of them in the way that we are aware of mayflies and caddis and midges.
They don't have that same beauty appeal of aquatic insects.
And the other thing that makes it tough to realize that fish are eating ants in particular beetles is a little bit easier, but ants in particular is that ants don't float really high on the surface.
They don't have those big upright wings or the big bushy tent like wings, and they're smaller and they're not really designed to float.
Aquatic insects are, ants are not.
So they don't sit as high in the water, and if you're not paying very close attention, it's not always immediately obvious that, oh, that fish is eating ants.
It just looks like they came up and took something off the surface, and you couldn't really tell what it was.
So it's not surprising that we overlook it.
We don't see it very often, and we just don't think about them because they're not as in your face as the mayflies and the caddis or the stoneflies that crawl all over your whatever else you're looking at.
And just in case you don't know what those other flies are, you know, mayflies, stoneflies, caterflies, midges that we've been talking about, we've got a whole bunch of information about all the aquatic insects, when they hatch, when to use them, flies we recommend, rigs, all that stuff.
All this is in our Field Guide.
It's this completely free little waterproof spiral bound book.
We designed it to fit inside just about any fishing pack.
And again, it's free and it's waterproof.
So you just grab it.
It goes right in your pack.
You've got all this information to reference right there on the river.
You don't have to try and download a podcast and listen to this right before you go to the river or whatever.
You could just, boom, pull the field guide out, and it's there.
Again, they're completely free.
We want you guys to have them.
You just need to pay shipping to get them to you.
So if you'd like a copy, there's a link down in the show notes, or there will be a QR code here on the screen as well if you're watching the video podcast.
So with all that in mind, we know trout are gonna eat ants of beetles.
When and where do we bust these flies out?
When do we start using them?
Well, they're definitely summertime flies, but they're gonna bleed over into early fall to basically from end of runoff ish to the first big freeze of the year.
It's a great time to be using ants and beetles.
And really, any hot windy day is gonna be especially great to fish these bugs in particular since they're terrestrial insects.
They don't live in the water.
They'll live near it, but they don't live in it the way that your caddyssey or mayflies do.
So the windy days blows a lot of them to the river.
They're not always the greatest flyers, so you get a big wind gust that might blow them out to the river.
They might fall in.
The beetles might be on the stream side vegetation, then they fall in as well.
And the later and later we get into the summer, the more and more ants and beetles you're going to see in the water.
Because as you get later and later into the summer, all the other vegetation starts to dry out, starts to die, but all the stuff closest to the river stays nice and lush and green, and that's where these bugs wanna hang out and eat their food.
So later and later you get in the summer, the more and more you're gonna look to fish with these bugs.
So that's really kind of the high level overview of when you want to fish them.
But with ants, you can also fish them if you run into any big mating swarm of flying ants.
And, yes, that is a thing, if you haven't seen it before.
I'd never run into too many of them.
I don't know if it's more common in some areas versus others.
I've also just never really paid a lot of attention to ants either up until, like, I I mentioned a little while ago.
So but from from what I've been told, what I've read and looked at, these flying swarms of mating ants will create enough of a frenzy if you get into them.
The fish will eat those over mayflies or caddis or whatever else happens to be on the water because they'll just go for the gains, which I think is really interesting that they'll they'll key in on them that way.
And I've never been into that big swarm of mating ants that all kinda end up in the water.
But if you have, definitely drop a comment.
Tell us about that experience.
I think that'll be cool to see.
And cool to experience too.
But I I remember I was reading I was either reading or talking to somebody.
I did I did fair amount of that prepping for the show this week.
And they were telling me about a time they were out on one of the big famous Freestones out here in the West, and they had all their aquatic insects.
They were ready to go, and they get down to the water, and they found a bunch of rainbows that were just snacking, just munching.
But they were ignoring every aquatic insect that threw at them.
And finally, they realized, oh, these flying little black things they see in there are ants.
So they had a vice with them, so they tried to tie up a couple of ants real quick.
Go back out there.
They caught a few, but they mostly just ignored the aquatic insects, and the only fish they caught came on the ants on that trip.
So it does happen.
Like I said, I'd love to experience that at some point.
So maybe my next big goal is go find an ant fall or whatever we wanna call it.
Instead of a spinner fall, it'll be an ant fall.
But yeah.
So it it's that's another time when you wanna just pay attention.
If you see a lot of ants, if you see the flying ants that are buzzing around, tie an ant on because there's a very good chance that there are some ending up in the water.
So again, to sum this all up, I would focus on fishing your ants and your beetles anytime after runoff until about that first frost of the season.
And then I would especially focus on fishing with an ant when you see fish rising, but you don't see any specific aquatic insects on the surface.
Because that's one of those really frustrating moments that you get into as an angler.
As you're out there, the fish are rising, you can clearly see them doing something under the surface, but they're not they're not giving you any clues that you don't see any bugs on the surface either.
对。
Yeah.
They they might be eating caddis pupa as they come up in their emergence.
We know fish love to snack on those, but there's also a really good chance that they're eating the ants too.
So if you don't see anything on the surface, throw some ants.
You you might end up surprising yourself.
Now with beetles, like I mentioned earlier, they are a lot more likely to get that response that grasshoppers or even cicadas do, honestly.
The the way that I fish beetles is very similar to how I fish cicadas.
And it's the same thing with a cicada hatch is it's pretty rare to get into, like, a a steady stream of cicadas just all over the river the way that you see a lot of mayflies or a lot of midges on the water surface.
But if the fish aren't doing very much, a beetle, if you throw it tight to the bank, you kinda twitch it a little bit to make it look like it's struggling, that's gonna get some fish to come over.
And at a bare minimum, they're gonna look at it, but there's a high likelihood they're just gonna eat it too because that's a big ticket meal.
It's the right time of year.
They're used to seeing them, and they will eat them more than you anticipate.
So that that's what's kinda fun about fishing them.
You think big foam bugs, the default for a lot of folks is grasshoppers, but beetles, they kinda get overlooked.
And then, again, location, I wanna stress this, really doesn't matter too much here either because you're gonna find ants and beetles active on trout streams, honestly, everywhere except maybe like the really high elevation stuff.
I'm sure there's ants up there.
I'm sure there's beetles up there.
I just don't I don't know.
I I don't know for sure like what the ant situation is at 11,000 feet.
But if you're up there at 11,000 feet and you're fishing a stream, I would also be very surprised if the cutthroat and the brook trout in that stream didn't wanna eat an ant or beetle.
So they're they're gonna work for you regardless if you live, yeah, here in the Rockies or if you're somewhere on the East Coast or in the Driftless, wherever you're fishing, ants and beetles are gonna be on the menu.
Now let's also dive into some actual how to on the fishing side of it.
I think that'll be a fun thing to get into next.
Let's start with the ants.
K?
If you are on the river, you see fish rising, you see them eating in a way that that looks like they're eating adults.
You see the head breaking the surface, you see a little bit more of a splash, but you don't see any insects on the water at that point.
Ants would be a great bet.
Beetles would also be a great bet because what's going on is the fish are showing you that, hey, they're looking up, they are willing to eat off the top, and we know trout love terrestrial insects.
They're a high value food item, and I think they really love them just because they know they can't escape.
Right?
They know that unlike mayflies or midges or caddis, which they have wings, they're designed to get off of the water.
When the trout go to eat them, there's a chance those fish could fly away at the last second.
Terrestrial insects are not designed to be on the water as they kind of freak out when they fall on there.
Like me, when I, you know, open the fridge and realize all my wing sauce is gone, I'm like, oh, no.
And I kinda have a little moment.
They're doing the same thing on the water.
Crap.
Crap.
I'm I'm wet.
So the fish know that.
I I swear they do.
They're like, oh, yeah.
That guy can't get away from me.
So they could just kinda take their time and cruise over to it and then freight train it if they want to.
So that's part of the appeal to fishing ants and beetles, really, is the fish know that they can't get away.
So if you do see again, you see some rises that look like the fish are eating adults, but you don't see any bugs on the surface, and maybe you throw a cast or two towards them with a parachute Adams or an elk or catus and they ignore that, go to an ant or a beetle because there's a very good chance.
Again, they're looking up.
They're telling you, hey, I'm more than happy to eat off the surface right now.
You just gotta find something that will actually get them to commit, and a lot of time, it's gonna be ants and beetles.
Now if you are in a situation where you see some fish rising and they're not quite breaking the surface, you you kinda see that telltale emerge or rise.
Like Ernest Schwiebert said earlier, you see that little bump and roll in the surface film?
Looks like they're they're eating.
You'd tell they're active, but they're not really breaking the surface.
That's a great time to tie on a sunken ant.
And, again, ants don't stay up and float forever like an aquatic insect will.
They're just not designed for that.
They're going to eventually sink and fall into the surface film, and they'll be kinda drowned a little bit.
And trout are gonna eat them with the same movement that they eat anything else that's stuck in the surface film.
So again, you're out there, you see fish clearly chowing down on something, but you don't see any bugs on the water?
是的
Yeah.
Throwing an ant on, a sunken ant, and you are gonna be in business there.
And the last thing not the last thing, second to last thing.
I got ahead of myself in my notes here.
I would also recommend when you're fishing your beetles, I mentioned this a minute ago, but make sure you utilize some kind of twitch when you're fishing those beetles.
Because again, your terrestrial insects, they're not designed to be on the water.
They fall in it.
They're like me.
You know, I'm ready for dinner.
My mother-in-law puts green beans in front of me or something ridiculous like that.
And, yeah, my mother-in-law is making me dinner right now because we're we're living with you in laws for a little bit while we move.
But anyways, not that everyone needed to know that, but there you go.
I'm in my in law's basement.
So you can really trust me.
I'm podcasting, and I'm in my in law's basement, not at the same time, but that that's just the the the combo that you expect out of a fly angler.
Right?
But, you know, they see where was I?
Oh, yeah.
They they fall into the water, and they freak out a little bit.
They're not supposed to be there.
They really wanna get away from it.
They really want to get out of the water, so they're gonna struggle.
They're not just gonna dead drift there perfectly still like a mayfly will.
They're gonna there's gonna be some movement.
So lifting your rod a little bit, wiggling the rod tip back and forth, moving the fly line just slightly enough that that beetle kinda makes a little bit of drag, little bit of wake.
You can see it just kinda wiggle.
That imitates what they really do when they fall in the water, and that can sometimes be the little bit of action you need to do to close a deal between a fish that's like, that looks good, but I don't know.
I'm kinda wary.
Like, alright.
You gave me there's bacon and butter on this plate, but I see green beans under that.
不行。
Nope.
You do that little twitch and they're gonna commit.
They're gonna eat it at that point.
It really is interesting how that can work out, just that little bit of movement.
And then the last thing as well before we get into the fly patterns.
With ants and with some other terrestrial insects too, I have found that color can actually play a bigger role than it does with a lot of our aquatic insects.
We talk about size being the most important, shape being next, and color being the least important.
But there's been multiple times over the last just couple of years even where I've been out fishing with buddies, and I'm fishing just my usual tan and black hoppers and whatnot.
And my buddies I I had one guy last year, he's fishing pink stuff.
And the fish were going nuts for it.
For whatever reason, they that that contrast of the pink on the water just set them off, and they loved it.
Same size of fly, same style, just pink instead of tan, and they were going nuts on it.
So I would definitely say, yeah, have a few different colors of ants, have a few different colors and shades of beetles.
Just try and have different options on hand because I have seen that actually matter when it comes to terrestrial insects.
And then we know there's a bunch of different colored ants out there.
You get a red, black, brown, wings, no wings, you know, big, small.
So having a having some kind of variety on hand is gonna help you if you run into fish that, you know, are actually keyed in on a very specific size or color of ant on the water.
So with all that said, hopefully, that's a pretty good primer to get you guys ready for ants and beetles.
You know, take it from me, they really do make a difference.
I fished beetles a lot more lately.
I fished ants a lot more lately, and it's just one of those things where I I I ask myself, why have I not been doing this?
They're very effective, especially, like I said, the the middle of the day when the fish are still active, but they're not really there's not a lot of bugs on the water because there's not a hatch going on middle of the day, They're they're a game changer.
They they really have been.
You know, one river by me, I used to live where we used to live, one of the guide secrets on that river, and it actually was a guide secret, because a lot of the other guys I knew who fished it didn't do this, but all the guides did.
They would just throw beetles almost exclusively even during the big yellow sally hatch because there were still just so many beetles up there.
So it really does work.
It is one of those things that will surprise you the more you do it.
You'll have some experiences like I did.
But with all that in mind, let's look at the fly patterns themselves that we actually recommend.
And we've got all of these fly patterns available.
If you're interested, they're in our three packs on our website.
I'll drop a link to those in the show notes as well.
And maybe maybe I'll even throw in a QR code.
We'll see if I remember when I'm editing the podcast.
But that way, just if you wanna grab a few, they're there for you.
They're, you know, cheap, easy.
You got three of them.
But let's start with the Amy's ant.
This is one of the great ant patterns that we have.
It's a little bit larger of an ant pattern, and it's designed to float pretty high.
And it's gonna work pretty well as the top fly in a dry dropper rig.
And it's it's got this double decker foam body with two different colors of foam, and then it's got some hackle on it to kinda simulate the the thoraxes and, like, the the more round parts of the ant.
And then it's got a little bit of dubbing on the bottom that gives us some contrast and some bugginess.
It's just a really good all around ant pattern.
And in fact, one of one of the guys in our VFC school group, he was telling us just a couple weeks ago that he actually fishes the Amy's ant all the time, even over the chubby Chernobyl because it just looks and feels so buggy on the water, and it's like his go to big dry fly.
So it's a good little pattern that is going to serve you well.
The next one I'd recommend is the Bionic Ant.
This is a completely foam fly with a little bit of hackle around the front and the back to, again, simulate legs and stuff.
But it's got a foam body that's divided into kinda even segments that make it look a little bit more realistic of an ant, I would say.
It's just got the right segmentation, right profile to mimic just about any ant that you run into.
Really simple fly.
They float fairly well, but again, tied to be a bit more realistic looking.
The next one I would recommend to have on hand is the sunken ant, which as its name implies, is designed to imitate ants that have sunk below the surface.
So the front of it's got this little bead on it, a little bit of UV resin over some thread, and then you've got some flash to imitate the legs, and then a dubbing back half to imitate the other parts of the round abdomen and thorax part of the ant itself.
And then last but not least, our beetle pattern we recommend is just the high vis beetle.
Simple.
It's not too big, not too small.
It's real good beetle size, but it's got a nice bright orange post on it over a black body so that you can see that on the water fairly easily.
And if you fish, like, a smaller dropper with this, you'd get away with that.
It it's kinda like a cicada where you can fish droppers on cicadas, but folks I know who fish cicadas, you're usually just fishing the single dry fly.
It's kinda where I go with the high vis beetle.
I just it's a single dry fly setup for me.
But those are you know, we keep it kinda simple, just have different sizes and colors within that.
But that that's a good collection to start you off as you experiment with these bugs for the rest of summer.
So hopefully, that list is helpful.
Hopefully, everything else we talked about is helpful.

But it is time to move on to the q and a portion of this week's episode because just like we do here every week at Untangled, we're gonna spend the last half of the show directly answering questions from listeners and viewers just like yourself.
So if you've got a fly fishing question that you would like answered, there's a link to send those into us down in the show notes, or you can find that right here on the screen if you're watching the video podcast.
Anthony from Wyoming has our first question, writes in and says, go fishing every chance I get.
Last year, I was consistently catching fish.
This year with water levels being way low, I'm struggling to catch anything but moss.
Any tips would help.
I can't wrap my head around it.
Anthony, this is a really good question.
And before I answer, I've got one question for you.
Have you adjusted your rigs at all or your approach at all from last year to this year?
And I ask that because I know there's a lot of comfort in you had success, so you show up whether it's a week, a month, or a year later, and you fish the same rig, you fish the same spot, you fish the same style, you you look to try and do everything the same so you can repeat that success.
I did that all the time when I was starting out fly fishing.
There's nothing wrong with it.
I I just know it.
There's there's something very comforting and very rewarding about being able to repeat success like that.
So you try to try to do that as much as you can.
And the issue with that is when conditions change, just like you noted, it doesn't always work.
What worked last year is not always going to work exactly a year later, especially when we're in a big drought like we are.
Water levels have have dropped so so much, so quickly in so many different places.
So the first thing that I would do, just addressing the issue directly, say you're catching a ton of moss.
So the first thing that I would do is I would adjust the depth of your rig because I assume you say you're catching moss, you're probably nymphing or fishing a dry dropper rig of some sort.
So if you are consistently hooking into moss, you're constantly snagging on the rocks, that's the dead giveaway that you are just fishing too deep.
So make sure you move that indicator close to your flies, trim your dropper tags a bit, go to a shorter dry dropper rig in general, maybe go with a lighter fly instead of a really heavy one.
If you're using split shot, maybe ditch a split shot.
Just tweak your rig continually until you're not snagging up on the bottom and getting moss on every single cast.
That's going to make a difference for you.
K?
The other part of this though is I've addressed this a a bit lately, but I'm gonna just touch on it directly here for you, is that fish chains positions during the year.
The water you find them in in February is not the water you're likely going to find them in come July.
They're they're just moving around.
They're looking for different things at different times of the year.
And even, you know, year to year, depending on water levels, they're not gonna be in the same spot they were last year, unless maybe you're fishing something like a tailwater or a spring creek where the water levels are consistently predictable.
Now there's a chance that, you know, yeah, you can go fish that same hole year after year and catch fish, but it's not always a guarantee.
Depending on water levels, things are going to change.
So this time of year, fish are really seeking out water that's cooler.
They don't wanna be in water that's too hot, so that's defined as anything 68 to 70 degrees in freedom units or warmer is gonna be too hot for a trout.
You generally want a fish in stuff that's 68 or cooler because that water's got enough oxygen that the fish feel happy.
They're they're right where they wanna be.
Everything's firing on all cylinders for them.
The warmer water gets, the less oxygen it actually has in it, and then that becomes harder for the fish to breathe.
They've gotta work harder to get the same amount of water flowing over their gills to get that oxygen out of it.
That's why we always, you know, recommend once water temps hit 68, quit fishing because there's just not enough oxygen in the water for the fish to recover from fights anymore, and it's not worth killing a whole bunch of fish just to catch them for a day.
If you're gonna go out and, you know, catch your limit to take home and eat, yeah, tip my cap till you go do it.
But as far as catch and release fishing goes, it's not worth doing once water temps get up an over 68.
So they're looking for that cooler water.
That's the why behind it.
In summer, there's gonna be enough food that they can find they they can have meals to about anywhere they're hanging out.
So they're really gonna be looking in the pools and runs unless the unless there's a hat that gets really big that pulls them out into the riffles.
And then pools and runs, just in case you don't know, pools are just the deepest, slowest moving bits of the river, and all that cool water is gonna be down there at the bottom.
So they'll hang out down there in those pools.
And then runs, they're deeper than a pool, but they're moving a little bit quicker.
They're not a shallow riffle, which is the shallowest bit of the river where the water's kind of moving with that classic disturbed look over the top of all the rocks and stuff.
The runs are kind of that in between water, and usually there's enough depth to those runs as well.
They can find that cool water, hang out there, and then, yeah, that current's bringing them quite a bit of food.
So that would be my first move.
If I were you, I would focus on making sure I'm fishing where the fish should be.
So I'm fishing at deeper cooler water this time of year, and then make sure that I'm not fishing too deep.
K?
Because even though the fish are hanging out in those pools and in those runs, you throw a nice big dry fly up on top.
Again, there's a lot of food this time of year.
There's a very high likelihood they'll come up from the bottom of the pool and eat that.
And then you can also, you know, go dry dropper at that point.
Just make sure you're not catching the bottom every single cast, every single drift because that's the dead giveaway that you're too deep.
And then probably the last thing to say here is some rivers just do get really mossy when it gets warm, and it warmed up a lot quicker this year than it did last year.
So might just be time to not fish that river for the rest of the year until things cool down.
Generally, the cooler water you find, the less moss you're gonna end up with, so it might be time to just go explore some of the high country.
You're in Wyoming, so you got a lot of good mountain fishing to do.
There's a lot of fun stuff further up there.
You can kinda leave the stuff down lower with the moss and then wait till fall.
That moss starts to die and and break off and you can have a good time.
So hopefully, that helps you.
Thanks a bunch for sending that question in.
Shelby from Utah has our next question, writes in and says, hi.
First off, I love the podcast.
It's helped me tremendously with my fly fishing journey, and I continue to learn so much.
When I first started fly fishing last summer, I only tied on dry flies.
It was straightforward and made sense to my beginner brain.
Once the winter hit, I knew I needed to figure out nymphing, but I couldn't ever get a handle on it until I went out with someone who knew and helped me get on my first fish with nymphs.
I've been having so much fun since then as I begin to understand the water column more and the life cycle of the bugs.
But fast forward to now, I find that I forgot what it's like to fish dries.
Do you relate to this?
Perhaps I'm just rusty with it, but how do you recommend getting back out there and building up confidence with dry fly fishing again?
Shelby,
Shelby, sorry.
I don't relate to it at all because if anything, I get rusty with my nymphs and streamers because I fish dry flies too much.
没有。
No.
I 100% get what you're saying.
I hope I didn't come off as arrogant.
It's just I I love dry flies so much that I will fish them to a fault.
And then, yeah, I have felt that way sometimes.
I'm like, oh, yeah.
This is what an infraig's like.
I I really do get what you're saying though.
And I I think I think there's something really worth addressing because you ask specifically, yeah, how do you get back up there?
How do you get back out there?
How do you build confidence up with dry fly fishing?
The only way to do that is to just go do it.
And I know you're like, k, that's really simple, Durant.
Thanks a bunch.
But that really is the best way to get out and get it done.
Now you can make it easy on yourself.
You could go up to the high country.
You could fish dry flies up there for a day because the fish are very eager.
They're gonna smash those flies.
You get a good drift.
You'll be rewarded.
And you could do that, you know, kinda ease back into the dry fly game up there and then go find a a river with bigger fish that are a little bit more wary of a dry fly at that point.
But I I I think this really does speak to a part of fly fishing that beginners especially are averse to, but I've also run into it a lot myself lately.
And that is you've gotta not be afraid to fail because you are going to get skunked.
You're going to have very tough days on the water, and that's just part of fly fishing.
And if you don't come to terms with that very early on, it could be a very tough thing to continue to want to do.
So don't be afraid of saying, k.
I'm gonna go fish drys again because I haven't done it.
And there's a chance I might get skunked because I haven't done it.
Maybe I'm rusty a little bit.
I don't know.
But go do it.
好。
K.
Don't be afraid of failing because, yeah, you could not fish dry, but you're gonna not catch fish that way either, right, if you just don't go fishing.
So might as well go and try.
And I know for beginners especially, you deal with so much failure at the beginning of the sport.
It's a miracle anybody keeps doing it.
But you deal with a lot of failure at the beginning of this sport where you get your butt kicked, you tangle everything on every cast, you lose all the flies, you feel like you're a burden to the buddy that took you out on the waters.
We've been there.
Right?
It's tough.
Go have a little bit more failure.
I know you've had a lot.
I I don't say to go a bit more is tough, but it really it really is it's just the best way to learn.
K?
Is these repeated examples of what not to do, and then it starts to click on how to actually do it.
Now all that being said, I'm kinda overemphasizing the failure part of it here because fly fishing is a lot like riding a bike.
It it will surprise you how quickly a lot of it comes back given that you don't just, like, fly fish once on the family trip to Yellowstone for a day and then don't do it for another year.
Yeah, you're probably gonna be pretty stinking rusty.
Depends on how much you retained.
Right?
How good your teacher was, how quick you picked it up, all of that stuff.
But, Shelby, you said that you are you are still fishing.
You're still nymphing.
You just haven't fished dry flies a bunch.
So it's not like you just fished dry flies and then quit fly fishing.
That's not what you're going back out there to to experience.
没错。
No.
You went from dry flies to nymphs and you you've learned the nymphing game.
You're figuring it out.
You're catching fish on nymphs.
Well, a lot of those skills actually do translate over to fishing with dry flies.
K?
Because you still have been learning how to cast for the last year.
And, yes, I know dry fly rigs cast are fully the nymph rigs, but that motion is still the same, understanding timing, understanding understanding how your rod works with different rigs and weights of flies on it, understanding how to get those flies where you want them to be.
That's all stuff you need to know how to do with a dry fly anyways.
So you're good there.
You're still learning how to read water.
You're learning where the fish are hanging out, which that's gonna make you an exceptionally better dry fly angler because you're not just peppering the water with dry flies anymore.
You're you're actively like, okay.
I know foam lines are gonna be a good place.
I know the seams are gonna be a good place.
And then while you've been nymphing, I can almost guarantee you've probably seen fish rising.
Correct?
So if you have, you also have been absorbing that information of what kind of water do they really like to rise in.
You're you're starting to that's starting to kinda crystallize itself for you.
You are going to have a much better idea of where to put your flies now than you did a year ago.
Maybe the only skill that you really haven't fine tuned, you've, you know, you've been nymphing a whole bunch, is the the hook set with dry flies because the timing's a little bit different depending on how the fish eats it.
If they're gonna come up and they're going to very slowly eat it, you've gotta wait till the fish goes down with your fly so you don't pull it out of its mouth.
If they're eating it very quickly, you've gotta be a little bit faster on the hookset, but the hookset motion itself is still the same.
A nice firm lift straight up with the line staying tight is really all you need.
So, again, yeah, you've been nymphing for a little bit, but I would say just don't be scared because you as we can see here, you've developed the skills you need to be a dry fly angler.
Now you just gotta go out and do it.
So I would have a lot less worry about it.
I would just go and do it, be okay with failing.
It's alright if you if you have a couple of tough days, but definitely go out.
Definitely do it again and see how much you love it now.
And maybe who knows?
Maybe Nim Fing does it for you.
Maybe that's what you really enjoy, and that's what you'll learn from your next dry fly trip.
But either way, I wish you success and I hope that answer helps you.
Thanks a bunch.
Dwayne from Virginia has our next question, writes in and says, my question is when primarily roll casting, does heavier line hurt or help?
For example, I recently purchased a 10 foot four weight and have not purchased four weight line yet.
Eager to try it out, I put a reel on with standard five weight floating line on it.
I'm primarily nymphing under an indicator.
It seemed to cast really well, especially when roll casting and trying to get max distance from said cast.
Now it makes me wonder, should I use a four weight line or perhaps a four and a half weight, or should I stick with the five weight?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated and also Diet Coke in the can for the win.
Dwayne, that damn right Diet Coke in the can for the win.
It just it hits different.
It's just it's like wings fresh out of the fryer versus wings that sat under the heat lamp for a minute.
You can just tell.
Right?
Just that that bite that that oh, it's just it's invigorating.
It's the nectar of life.
Maybe that's a little far, but it is invigorating.
So to your question, because it's not a food review podcast yet.
Generally speaking, fly rods are always gonna roll cast better with heavier fly lines because I want you to think about the mechanics for a minute.
Okay?
A roll cast utilizes the weight of your fly line, your leader, your indicator, your flies, any split shot that you've got on there, plus the way that your rod flexes under that load to transfer all of that energy in one single motion.
That's what the roll cast does.
It uses all of that weight, loads up the rod, transfers that energy, rolls that cast out there for you, and it gets it all done in one motion instead of building all of that up over the course of some overhead casts.
So if you increase the weight of the fly line in that equation, you're gonna increase how much your rod flexes, and that's gonna increase how far and quickly that rod is going to roll cast that line out there because you are accessing more of the blank.
You are accessing the stronger, heavier parts of the blank closer down to the butt section of the rod, so you are engaging more of the rod to throw and to roll cast that line out there for you when you fish a heavier line than the rod was designed for.
It's gonna make it flex more.
So you're going to get a bit more performance out of it that way.
And I know that even in some distance casting competitions, a lot of anglers will throw, like, a nine weight line on a five weight rod for that exact reason because all that extra weight makes the rod bend more, utilizes more of the blank, and then coaxes a little bit more power out of that rod.
You still get you still get that sensitivity of the light rod, but you're you're loading it up with more weights.
You're gonna get more power out of it.
Now the trade off here is that the line is not going to land on the water the same way because excuse me.
Four weight rods, even a 10 foot four weight, they're designed for, yes, nymphing.
They excel at that, but there's also gonna be that instance where, yeah, you might wanna fish dry flies with it.
So they're going to be designed to be a little bit softer.
They're going to have more of a forgiving tip to them.
They're going to be focused more on light presentations, a little bit smaller flies because four way line is designed for smaller flies than five weight line.
K?
We we remember back, I believe it was just last week, we had a discussion about this on the show as well.
So when you put a five weight line on a four weight rod, that rod does not have you're loading it up with more energy.
Right?
So that line's not gonna land on the water as softly because, again, you're loading that line up with more energy, that rod up with more energy because you're putting more weight into the equation.
So you lose some of the delicacy that you would get if you were using a four weight line.
And that might not matter for a lot of nymphing, but there will be instances where, especially in shallower water, if your line is hitting the water too hard, it's splashing and just really slapping the water, that's gonna spook some fish off.
So it does pay to to have the line that's matched to the rod because that's gonna give you the best possible presentation in terms of just laying those flies down softly without too much surface disturbance.
So that's the trade off that you've got to see if you're willing to make with nymphs.
And then, again, if you're gonna use that four weight for dry flies at all, a five white line on there would be great, but you do lose that delicacy and that soft presentation ability that you would have if you fished a four white line on there.
So hopefully, that makes some sense.
I know this stuff can always be a little confusing, but if you got any more follow-up on that, please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know.

So if you've got a LIVEREELLIFE moment you would like to share with us, there's a link to send that in down in the show notes or right here on the screen if you're watching the video podcast.
And this week's LIVERE A LIFE moment is from Nathan who writes in and says, I have been a fly angler as long as I could remember, probably since I was about 11 years old.
My dad got me my first fly rod and took me to a local creek to learn.
And before too long, we were chasing beautiful cutties on one of our local rivers in Southeast Idaho.
While I enjoyed a fishfield a river runs through at esque childhood with my dad, I've come to find in my adult years that I don't really have that much fly fishing knowledge of my own.
This last year, have turned to your YouTube channel and this podcast to gain my own foundational knowledge of fly fishing and have found it to be of tremendous help in in developing my own skills.
Starting this last spring and up to this point, I have now caught many fish throughout many of my local fisheries with the skills I have learned.
It has turned a childhood hobby into a newfound love and honestly addiction.
I wanted to share one instance with you.
Once the warm weather finally hit, I was itching more than ever to get out on the water and hook into some fish.
I'm married and have a one year old son.
On this particular weekend, my wife had asked that I attend to our son as she had important matters to attend to, I had no plans that she knew of.
I was yearning to fish so much that I packed up the truck, diapers and all, and headed for a local creek, the same creek where my dad taught me to fly fish.
I scrapped on the baby carrier, threw my boy in, and off we went.
My son and I proceeded to spend the afternoon in a crystal clear stream surrounded by desert mountains, just the two of us.
We had a great time catching small brookies on my new fly flinger rod using a dry dropper setup.
That day, my son learned how to say the word fishy and wouldn't let me release a single one back into the creek without giving it a kiss goodbye.
I encountered a few other anglers on the water and they all had a good laugh at the spectacle of me doing my best to accomplish a drag free drift while carrying around a toddler like Luke Skywalker backpacking Yoda around the swamps of Dagobah.
While it wasn't a day where I caught my personal best fish or the most fish I've ever caught in an outing, it was one of the most memorable days I've ever experienced while fly fishing, and what I feel is a great embodiment of a living real life.
I wish you guys the best of hatches and the tightest of lines this season.
Ethan,
And, Ethan, that's awesome.
I've I love it.
I love the Star Wars stuff at the end.
I love taking the kid with you.
That's fantastic.
That is what LIVEREELLIFE's all about.
That that that's what it is.
It's it's a lot of fun.
And congrats on you to taking the kid and exposing them already.
So that's that's how we get more of us.
Right?
不对。
No.
