The Worst Fly Fishing Trip Ever | Fly Fishing Stories #7

Speaker 0

I don't think you could start a fishing trip out any better than the way this one began.

Speaker 0

We had a fancy yurt at the mouth of the canyon all to ourselves, a river full of big brown trout, and decent weather in the forecast.

Speaker 0

I was more excited and optimistic about this trip than almost any recent memory, but not just because it looked like we'd have good fishing.

Speaker 0

It'd be the first time in five years that I got to fish with my good friend Ryan McCullough, and Alex, my business partner here at VFC, was coming along with us too.

Speaker 0

We had steaks in the cooler, plenty of diet coke, and more flies between the three of us than we'd ever be able to lose in the trees.

Speaker 0

As the old saying goes though, no plan survives first contact with the enemy.

Speaker 0

And in our case, we didn't even know that we had an enemy or just how far south things were about to go.

Speaker 0

I've been friends with Ryan McCullough for more than a decade now, and we've had the opportunity to fish and explore all over the Western US.

Speaker 0

Ryan is a missionary for his church and spent most of the last five years in Wales before moving back to America.

Speaker 0

Once he was stateside for a while, we quickly put together a trip to go fish one of our favorite rivers.

Speaker 0

Alex, my good friend and business partner here at VFC, didn't wanna miss out on the fun.

Speaker 0

He's heard all of my stories about fishing with Ryan over the years, so he loaded up and headed out with us.

Speaker 0

To make things easier so we didn't have to haul camping gear across three states, we found a yurt at the mouth of a canyon that also had a grill and a complete kitchen, so we could stay on the river and cook meals late in the day and instead of making the long haul into town every night or cooking over a campfire.

Speaker 0

Plus, none of us were about to complain that we got to sleep on real beds instead of in a tent either.

Speaker 0

Ryan beat us there and walked down to the river to watch the fish in the last few hours of daylight.

Speaker 0

He didn't even take a fly rod with him.

Speaker 0

He told me he just wanted to see what the river was like now.

Speaker 0

This was his first trip to it in almost five years and you could see the stress and worry melt off him the second he heard the sound of water rolling over the rocks.

Speaker 0

When Alex and I rolled in after dark, Ryan told us he'd watched a few fish eat midges off the top, but there wasn't a huge hatch.

Speaker 0

When I asked him why he didn't try to catch any, he said he didn't need to.

Speaker 0

All he needed was to know the fish were there.

Speaker 0

Now, I was surprised to hear the hatch wasn't great and that there weren't too many fish eating off the top either Because this river is known for its brown trout that look up almost as eagerly as a high mountain cutthroat.

Speaker 0

The slightest bit of worry crept in, but I pushed the thought away.

Speaker 0

The river could be tough, but the fish always cooperated in some manner.

Speaker 0

Somewhere, there'd be fish rising.

Speaker 0

We'd just have to find them.

Speaker 0

There was one other wild card though, the flows.

Speaker 0

This river is a tailwater and unfortunately, that part of the country isn't free from the drought hitting most of the Rocky Mountains.

Speaker 0

The flows were well below normal for this time of year, which meant they're holding water back in the lake for irrigation season.

Speaker 0

With the weather warming up and the fields on the way to the river all planted, I knew it was just a matter of time before the flows jumped.

Speaker 0

That would do one of two things.

Speaker 0

The extra water would give the fish room to move around and access better feeding lies, and it would push a lot of the fish towards the banks making them a bit easier to find.

Speaker 0

Plus a big rush of water can stir up a lot of scuds, sow bugs, worms, and even crawdads, all of which are great food items for big hungry trout.

Speaker 0

Or all that cold water from the bottom of the lake would tank the river temps, shutting off the hatches for a while and putting the fish in a bit of a bad mood.

Speaker 0

Every river is different in how its trout react to sudden jumps and flows, and fishing right on the increase is always a gamble.

Speaker 0

But fishing itself is a gamble anyway, so it wasn't enough of a concern to reschedule the trip over.

Speaker 0

Still, as we settled in for a night in beds in the yurt, I was a bit worried that we might wake up to a river that wouldn't want to cooperate.

Speaker 0

Instead of the drizzle we expected, we woke up to a cloudless sky, soaring temps, and almost no wind.

Speaker 0

The river didn't look any higher and a quick check of the flow data online confirmed it was at the same level as last night.

Speaker 0

So we high tailed it upriver to the best stretches of water and quickly found room on a long run between two large pools.

Speaker 0

I rigged up a mayfly dry dropper rig and Alex put together something similar.

Speaker 0

The fish weren't rising and the bugs weren't terribly active yet, but things looked promising.

Speaker 0

Ryan didn't even rig his rod up.

Speaker 0

He sat on the bank waiting.

Speaker 0

He is a dry fly purist in the best possible way.

Speaker 0

He's really only interested in catching fish on dries, and he's perfectly happy to sit back and wait until the fish are rising, the bugs are active, or there's at least a good chance of a dry fly take.

Speaker 0

He often doesn't simply drift a fly over likely water just to say he's trying.

Speaker 0

It's a unique way to approach fly fishing, and while he doesn't have a single nymph in any of his fly boxes, he never looks down on anyone who uses them either.

Speaker 0

I reckon it takes a certain kind of conviction to only fish one way, but unlike a lot of us, Ryan knows exactly what he wants and he's willing to wait for it.

Speaker 0

There's probably a lesson in there somewhere.

Speaker 0

Nothing happened for a few hours until Ryan and I decided to walk upstream and look at the next pool to see if the fish were moving around.

Speaker 0

Alex opted to stay behind and fish the part of the run I'd been in.

Speaker 0

We hadn't been gone for more than five minutes when we heard a holler.

Speaker 0

Ryan and I turned to look downstream at Alex who was hooked up to a fish that jumped clean out of the water.

Speaker 0

Whatever it was, the fish looked enormous even from a distance.

Speaker 0

We hightailed it back to Alex and helped him net a rainbow that went almost 22 inches long.

Speaker 0

The fish had eaten a royal flush, a size twelve fly that looks an awful lot like a lot of bugs and in this case, probably imitated the stoneflies that were suddenly out and crawling on the rocks.

Speaker 0

They hadn't been there when Ryan and I had left five minutes ago.

Speaker 0

Now they were everywhere, even falling into the water.

Speaker 0

That's when we heard the telltale plunk of a big trout sipping something from calm water.

Speaker 0

We all looked upstream at the left bank where the rings of a rise were dissipating beneath a cottonwood that leaned precariously over the water.

Speaker 0

A beat later, the fish rose again eating a stonefly in a single gulp.

Speaker 0

Ryan and I looked at each other and he told me to take the first cast.

Speaker 0

I didn't need any more convincing, so I tied on a stonefly pattern that Ryan had given me almost ten years ago and made a tentative cast.

Speaker 0

My first cast landed too far to the right and my next cast was too short.

Speaker 0

The fish was still eating though and I couldn't believe there were enough stoneflies on the water for action this consistent.

Speaker 0

Finally, my next cast landed on target.

Speaker 0

The fish slurped, I set the hook, and we all let out a huge holler as I fought an almost 20 inch brown to the net.

Speaker 0

Ryan was up next because that wasn't the only fish rising in that pocket of water on the bank.

Speaker 0

Another fish was eating even tighter to a tangle of roots and branches.

Speaker 0

A few casts with the same fly I'd used didn't yield anything though, so Ryan paused to take a look at the water.

Speaker 0

Then as if on cue, not even five feet from Ryan's left leg, a fish rose.

Speaker 0

Ryan didn't miss a beat.

Speaker 0

He stripped in line, lifted his rod, and tossed a stone fly about seven feet upstream.

Speaker 0

It drifted a couple feet down, then the brown rose again and smashed that fly like it had just asked its sister to the prom.

Speaker 0

None of us could really believe that another almost 20 inch brown was eating with such reckless abandon, especially on a river like this where the trout are known to be so picky that it's common to need eight x tippet, size 26 flies, and 15 foot leaders to have a chance at landing one.

Speaker 0

With each of us on the board and the stoneflies out in force, we reckon the things were just starting to warm up.

Speaker 0

What we didn't expect is what happened next.

Speaker 0

The river shut off.

Speaker 0

Like the fish gods pressed a button and sucked all the fish right out of the water.

Speaker 0

The stoneflies were still crawling everywhere.

Speaker 0

A few mayflies buzzed and I even saw a caddis.

Speaker 0

We covered as much water as we could, but the river was a bit crowded and no one else was having much luck either.

Speaker 0

For the rest of the day, none of us even got a bite.

Speaker 0

Things were so dead that I eventually quit casting and just sat on the bank watching the river.

Speaker 0

I hoped that evening would bring out a hatch, so I waited in position at a likely run while the sun slowly slunk its way behind the canyon walls.

Speaker 0

Even with the low light and dropping temps, the bugs didn't do much and the fish didn't either.

Speaker 0

A few random rises were all we got.

Speaker 0

That night, while we grilled steaks, I checked the river flows.

Speaker 0

I had a sneaking suspicion something had happened and sure enough, they jumped almost as soon as Ryan let his fish go.

Speaker 0

Hoping that a night of stable flows would put the fish in a better mood, we hit the hay.

Speaker 0

The next morning, it was more of the same.

Speaker 0

Stone flies out, mayflies buzzing, more caddies than the day before, but the water was slightly off color, high, and despite our best efforts, the fish refused to do anything.

Speaker 0

Worms, scuds, midges, mop flies, eggs, anything we could think of, any rig imaginable, we tried it all.

Speaker 0

Ryan even tied on a dropper.

Speaker 0

All we had to show for it was a brief hookup Alex got with another rainbow, but it spat the hook before he could get it in the net.

Speaker 0

That afternoon followed the same script as the day before.

Speaker 0

We picked a stretch of river that's good dry fly water, a nice run that dumps into a pool a few 100 yards long.

Speaker 0

If the fish were going to rise and the bugs are going to hatch, this is where it would happen.

Speaker 0

So we waited.

Speaker 0

I took another break from fishing because it was starting to feel like I was casting a ghost.

Speaker 0

Even Alex who never takes a break to just sit and watch the water was defeated and discouraged.

Speaker 0

He joined Ryan and I on the bank while we stared dumbfounded at the water trying to will a hatch into existence.

Speaker 0

Just like the night before, nothing happened.

Speaker 0

The fish didn't rise, the bugs didn't hatch, and we ended the trip with three fish caught between us.

Speaker 0

By far the worst fishing trip I've ever been on, even those trips to Pyramid Lake years ago when I got skunked.

Speaker 0

At least on those trips, my buddies put fish in the net.

Speaker 0

When we left the next morning, I was sad that the river hadn't shown its best self.

Speaker 0

I felt a bit cheated, especially since this was a monumental trip.

Speaker 0

Ryan and Alex got to meet.

Speaker 0

I got to fish with two of my favorite people, but we couldn't have come up with a worst trip if we tried.

Speaker 0

It's one thing to get skunked from the start, but to see such a great stonefly hatch, catch fish on those bugs, and then get the middle fin.

Speaker 0

Well, that really stings.

Speaker 0

Even now, three months after the trip, I almost didn't wanna tell this story.

Speaker 0

But there's always something to learn from the river even on the worst days, and this trip was no different.

Speaker 0

Hey, everybody.

Speaker 0

Welcome to it.

Speaker 0

这里是《Untangled》。

This is Untangled.

Speaker 0

I'm your host, Spencer Durant, and I hope you all enjoyed that little story.

Speaker 0

A little little different than I've done usually here on the show, but it it's just there's a lot to learn from that story even though there weren't hardly any fish caught.

Speaker 0

And I I wasn't trying to be too dramatic.

Speaker 0

It is kinda painful to talk about it because it's a long drive away.

Speaker 0

I even flew to get there this time because it was quicker than driving for me.

Speaker 0

And I was with my buddies, and you just you want something good to happen when you plan a trip like that and you're with your buddies.

Speaker 0

And then for it to just not pan out that way, it felt, I mean, I took it personal.

Speaker 0

I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 0

I I got beef with that river now.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

It it just it's tough.

Speaker 0

And, really, I think the big takeaway more than anything is here is that flows matter.

Speaker 0

And we just did I think it was last week or maybe the week before, we just did a show about how to read river flows for better fishing.

Speaker 0

So if you don't know what river flows are or anything like that, it's just when the river increases, when there's more water in it, that sudden jump in flows can, like I talked about in the story, can really impact the way the fish behave.

Speaker 0

And sometimes it's for the better, sometimes it kinda jumpstarts things and really gets the fish into a good mood, and then other times like this one, they just really were mad that that had happened and they didn't want to cooperate, and it felt like they were just pouting like a toddler the whole time.

Speaker 0

So it's always a gamble, and that's why it's important to check flows.

Speaker 0

It's why you hear a lot of folks always like, well, what are the flows at?

Speaker 0

Because that does give you a lot of good information on how the fishing should be.

Speaker 0

Now there's no guarantee, right, because sometimes the fishes don't cooperate.

Speaker 0

And that's the other part that maybe for beginners is a little tough because you'll go out and you're gonna do all the right things, and the fish just don't cooperate.

Speaker 0

And especially as a beginner, that's really challenging because you don't have the years of positive reinforcement of knowing that, oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

It was tough today, but it's gonna be great next time or whatever.

Speaker 0

You don't have that built up.

Speaker 0

You just have a string of really bad trips.

Speaker 0

And so you've really gotta find it in yourself to push through and to keep going and to keep trying and keep fishing because it can be really easy when those days are that tough to just say, yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

I'm not doing it.

Speaker 0

This is too much work.

Speaker 0

It's just no.

Speaker 0

I'm not doing it.

Speaker 0

So I get it.

Speaker 0

I understand how frustrating that can be, but sometimes there really isn't anything you could do.

Speaker 0

Sometimes the fish just don't cooperate at all.

Speaker 0

And sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate either.

Speaker 0

I mean, there's that that aspect of it too where, you know, some of that's out of your control.

Speaker 0

We'd hoped the weather was supposed to be overcast and drizzly one day, which is perfect for blue winged olive mayflies.

Speaker 0

That's that's what we're really hoping for was to get into that kind of a hatch and just didn't materialize at all because it was bright and sunny the whole time.

Speaker 0

So the mayflies just weren't out there.

Speaker 0

The fish weren't on them as much.

Speaker 0

So there's just there's so much that goes into having a good day on the water that any one little thing can really throw that it can funk up the shway.

Speaker 0

It can really throw it off kilter.

Speaker 0

And, really, the the salvaging point from this was being out there with Ryan and Alex, being with your good buddies.

Speaker 0

That really does make those trips a lot more bearable when you're out there with folks that you enjoy being with.

Speaker 0

And so, you know, find the good fishing buddies and take good care of them because they're gonna take care of you, and you'll take care of them when these bad days happen like this.

Speaker 0

So it's always good to have folks in your corner to share those those times with because as much as the fishing sucked, Ryan and I got to sit next to the Trout River with our fly rods and talk and catch up after not seeing each other for five years.

Speaker 0

So that was fantastic.

Speaker 0

And then on top of that, Ryan and I both have these same taste in vintage fly rods.

Speaker 0

We collect a lot of vintage rods.

Speaker 0

So I brought a few, and he brought a few, and we got to have a casting session with our vintage rods together.

Speaker 0

So that was really fun.

Speaker 0

So there was a lot to it.

Speaker 0

We had good food.

Speaker 0

We slept in the nice yard.

Speaker 0

We got a bed.

Speaker 0

I mean, there's a lot to just look at and say, hey.

Speaker 0

This was good because that that river especially, there's some of the biggest spiders I've ever seen in my life.

Speaker 0

Love that canyon.

Speaker 0

And there's more scorpions and rattlesnakes up there than you would expect.

Speaker 0

So camping's always kind of a roll of the dice, I feel like.

Speaker 0

So it was nice to to not worry about, you know, dumping a a scorpion out of my shoes in the morning, get up to go to breakfast.

Speaker 0

So, yes, it was a tough trip, but you're gonna have those tough trips.

Speaker 0

You're gonna have those tough days that make it really difficult to want to go out and do much of anything, but that that's just part of fishing.

Speaker 0

And it will it reveals a lot about the folks you fish with that how they react to those days.

Speaker 0

It's very common to just get mad and angry about it, but, you know, definitely not take it out on each other.

Speaker 0

But it's it reminds me of that John Garroch quote.

Speaker 0

He said creeps and idiots can't conceal themselves long on fishing trips.

Speaker 0

It's a 100% true.

Speaker 0

You go out and you have a tough day like this, you're gonna see what your buddies are made of what you're made of too.

Speaker 0

You you're gonna you might even end up surprising yourself with with how you react in these situations.
